Upper Blackfoot Mining Complex (UMBC) officials are reflecting on work already completed as part of the $47.2 million effort. The project’s main goal is to remove roughly 1 million cu. yds. of tailings and mine waste to protect human health and the environment by minimizing direct contact with contaminants. “The people of Montana support cleaning up these legacy mining operations and look forward to the recreational opportunities these sites often provide, from trails through town to fishing in the high country,” said Shellie Haaland, Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) construction manager, Upper Blackfoot Mining Complex. “It took a lot of work securing a settlement, a commitment from state and federal agencies to make this project a priority, and a focus on what is in the best interest of Montana, its people and environment.” Mining of the Mike Horse Mine began in 1898 and expanded into a larger operation in 1919. In 1938, the Mike Horse Mining and Milling Company leased the mine and built a 150 ton-per-day flotation mill. In 1941, the Mike Horse Dam was built across Beartrap Creek to contain flotation mill tailings. In the mid-1970s, heavy rains caused a

partial failure of the dam and high creek waters eroded contaminated tailings into Beartrap Creek and the Upper Blackfoot. The state superfund facility, located roughly 15 mi. east of Lincoln, has been a concern for years. Seeps from tailings — the materials cre-

Okla. Freight Plan Receives Federal Approval Freight movement is vitally important to Oklahoma’s and the nation’s economy. More than 800 million tons of freight with an estimated value of $1.3 billion are transported in Oklahoma annually by truck, rail and waterway. Freight movement is expected to increase in the coming years, something the Oklahoma Department of Transportation is better positioned to accommodate due to recent federal approval of the Oklahoma Freight

the state that will help develop partnerships and target economic growth across all modes of transportation. Nearly 58 percent of all freight in Oklahoma is transported by truck and 41 percent by rail. “With an expected growth of 45 percent in trucking over the next 30 years, it’s important to examine our transportation corridors, take advantage of the funding available and improve our system to lend infrastructure supsee FREIGHT page 32
