Work is progressing on a major U.S. 34 repair project in Big Thompson Canyon north of Denver. Flooding in 2013 caused heavy damage to the highway that winds its way through Big Thompson Canyon, providing major access between Loveland and Estes Park. U.S. 34 is considered an important highway for residents and tourists. “The majority of the traffic on this highway is residential commuters and tourists,” said Jared Fiel, communications manager of Colorado Department of Transportation District 4. “This highway serves Rocky Mountain National Park and tourism traffic is highest during the summer months.” The length of highway needing repair is about 25 mi. (40 km). However the current construction phase is within a 3-mi. (4.8 km) stretch just east of Drake, Colo. “The current construction package under way is the first of at least four construction packages,” Fiel said. He said it would take about three years to complete all the construction phases.
