Initial Phase of $155M Mountain View Corridor Under Way

While no specific timetable has been given by the Utah Department of Transportation for the overall project, planners anticipate the work to be fully completed by 2030.

A project to construct new lanes and bridges along a 2-mi. (3.2 km) northern stretch of Utah’s Mountain View Corridor on state Route 85 from 5400 South north to 4100 South in Salt Lake and Utah counties is progressing. Work on this segment began earlier this year and is expected to continue through 2017.

Cost for improvements is set at $155 million and is state funded.

The section of roadway connects with a now open SR 85 stretch from 16000 South in Utah County, north to 5400 South in Salt Lake County. The north-south roadway is west of Interstate 15.

Also, utilities are being relocated from 2700 South to SR 201.

In addition, funding has been

allocated for improvements on a section of SR 85 from 4100 South north to SR 201.

For now, the focus is on adding two outside lanes along a 2-mi. section of SR 85 from 5400 South to 4100 South. That will result in two lanes in each direction separated by a wide median.

The project includes construction 14 roadway bridges and seven trail bridges.

In addition, the intersection of 4100 South to 5600 West will be constructed as part of this segment of construction.

Crews Will Build 14 Bridges for Rails, Roads Along MVC

A project to construct new lanes and bridges along a 2-mi. (3.2 km) northern stretch of Utah’s Mountain View Corridor is under way.

piles for the future bridges and working on utilities,” said Agustin Avalos, spokesman of Utah Department of Transportation, District 2. “Crews began earthwork in March.”

Avalos said the project area is fairly flat, but will have many embankments for bridges.

Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction Co. of Draper, Utah, and Staker Parson Companies of

Ogden, Utah, are contractor partners for the project. Mike MacArthur is project manager and Bryce Jaynes is construction manager.

Major subcontractors include Cache Valley Electric of Salt Lake City; Michael Baker International of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Terracon of Olathe, Kan. Between 40 and 100 workers

are on the job each day. Some work night shifts, but the majority of work is done during the day.

Approximately 1.3 million cu. yds. (993,921 cu m) of dirt will be moved as part of the project. Most of the material is being moved from an area of the project that had extra dirt to an area that needed it.

the delays will be minimal compared to other projects that are constructed where road currently exists,” Avalos said. “Depending on the work, there could be delays on the smaller cross streets.”

Positive Impacts Expected Project planners expect the added lanes and bridges will help alleviate congestion, while boost-

Wheeler Machinery Supplies MVC Contractors With the Right Equipment Wheeler Machinery Company is playing an important role in building the Mountain View Corridor, which will connect I-15, I-215, I-80 and SR201.

Phase I of the UDOT project involves moving more than 750 million tons (680 million t) of material. Dirt needed to be hauled from one location to another and other material required crushing, screening and recycling.

Contractors Staker and Parson Company of Ogden, Utah, and Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction Co. of Draper, Utah, needed the right equipment for the job. They knew Wheeler would help them with that project and the challenges presented.

A major challenge was the balance between time and the multi-phase construction. In order to keep up with the desired time frame, crushing and screening equipment was used to take the material onsite and turn it into a usable base for the construction.

By using the existing material and processing it through the crushing and screening plants — which eliminates the need for large dirt and rock piles as well as the need for large trucks hauling in material — the project has been able to create a road system capable of meeting the current traffic demands, but is able to be continually expanded with little to no interruption of work or traffic.

After speaking with Wheeler sales representatives Dusty DeMille (earthmoving) and Bob Wakeland, (crushing sales operations) it was determined that

the best way to save time and money was to crush and recycle material on site rather than hauling it away for recycling.

This project called for a Diester screening plant, capable of producing 3 in. (7.6 cm) A1a material from the material loaded into the feeder.

Wheeler also leased two Cat 980 loaders and skid steer loaders to be used for the project. The 980 Cat loaders were chosen because they were able to move the largest amount of material with the least amount of trips.

All crushing and Caterpillar equipment has a dedicated product support representative that would address any issues and coordinate maintenance requests should they arise.

Additionally, if a rental machine requires maintenance, Wheeler is able to pull another similar machine from its rental fleet to replace the down machine until it is up and running again.

Wheeler’s Cat equipment also comes with ProductLink, which monitors the machine and alerts the team of analysts if there is an issue. By sending reports to analysis, ProductLink allows Wheeler to contact the customer via phone, email or text if there is an issue, and can prevent a major breakdown before it happens.

will take traffic off an already congested I-15 by giving west Salt Lake County residents another north-south freeway option to reach their destinations.

Initial construction includes two lanes in each direction with signalized intersections. Biking and walking trails are included.

Future construction will build out the remainder of the corridor by converting intersections to interchanges and adding inside lanes to achieve a fully functional freeway. Mountain View Corridor (SR 85) will eventually be a 35-mi. (56.3 km) freeway from I-80 in Salt Lake County to SR 73 in Utah County.

The Utah Department of Transportation maintains the entire Mountain View Corridor, which runs from Salt Lake City south to the Lehi area.

Freeway Built in Three Phases Plans call for three phases of construction.

When finished, the freeway will have five lanes in each direction including a highoccupancy toll lane.

Some sections also will include two-lane frontage roads on both sides of the freeway.

Phase 1 includes construction of outside lanes or two one-way frontage roads for each section of the entire length of the Mountain View Corridor and preserves space in the middle of the highway to build overpasses.

Actual freeway construction begins in Phase 2. The freeway lanes will be built where the frontage roads were constructed.

In Phase 3, crews will widen the freeway from two lanes in each direction to five lanes in each direction.

While no specific timetable has been given by the Utah Department of Transportation for the overall project, planners anticipate the work to be fully completed by 2030.

UDOT Uses High-Pressure Water Jets for Bridge Demolition The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is utilizing an innovative system of high-pressure water jets to refurbish bridge decks on the I-215 project. This is one of the first times UDOT has used this hydro demolition process to reconstruct a bridge deck, and the first in the Salt Lake Valley.

Hydro demolition will allow crews to be more precise while refurbishing the bridge, which saves time and money.

“While we are reconstructing I215 with all-new concrete pavement, we also want to preserve what we have where possible,” said Oanh Le Spradlin, UDOT project manager. “Utilizing an innovative tool like hydro demolition helps us accomplish that on several bridges without spending the money on a complete rebuild.”

Hydro demolition is being used to remove the top few inches of the pavement on two I-215 bridges (3500 South and 3800 South), leaving much of the pavement and the reinforcing steel intact. Other demolition methods potentially

could cause structural damage and require more extensive repairs, extending the schedule and increasing costs. Using hydro demolition to remove and replace the concrete bridge decks will extend the life of the bridges by 15 years.

During construction, all four lanes of traffic will remain open in each direction during the morning and evening commutes. Most work, along with the necessary

lane restrictions, is scheduled at night to reduce delays for the more than 100,000 cars per day traveling this section of I-215.

Crews are making significant progress on the I-215 reconstruction – UDOT’s largest project of 2016: • New asphalt has been placed in the westbound lanes of I-215 from 300 East to Redwood Road.

• Some concrete paving is already done in the freeway median from 4700 South to 3500 South.

• The reconstructed ramp from southbound I-215 to eastbound S.R. 201 is now open.

In addition, the ramp from northbound I-215 to westbound SR 201, along with the ramp from eastbound 4700 South to northbound I-215, are now closed through late August for reconstruction. Work on the I-215 project is scheduled for completion in fall 2017.
