The new price tag on the facility, slated to meet LEED Gold standards, is up by about $700 million from the original estimate of $2.9 billion, which comes with some serious economic impacts and no local tax monies.

“The new Economic Impact Study is really impressive,” Volmer said. “This is a $3.6 billion project; the economic impact will be $5.5 billion through 2024 to 2025.

“We were the only large-sized hub airport with savings,” Volmer said. “We had almost 50 percent of the total project in savings.”

Other funding will come from the sale of bonds, passenger and rental facility charges, and federal grant money.”

Huntsman Announces Major Gifts for Expansion Plans Huntsman Cancer Foundation (HCF) recently announced that several individuals and business organizations have committed a total of $40 million to support a proposed major building expansion of Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah (U of U). The announcement of these historic gifts was made by Peter Huntsman, HCF chairman and CEO, at HCF’s annual gala held Sept. 20 at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City.

The lead donors to the project include Spencer and Kristen Kirk in honor of Kathryn F. Kirk, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints Humanitarian Aid Fund and doTERRA International.

“This expansion was my father’s vision and something he worked on prior to his death. He was always looking forward to plan what was needed next to help people with cancer,” said Huntsman. “Our family is honored to continue to carry his and my mother’s vision forward to ease the suffering caused by cancer. We are

immensely grateful and humbled by the generous support of the donors who have helped realize my father’s dream to eradicate cancer from the face of the earth.”

The funding will support a proposal to significantly expand the Cancer Hospital at HCI, part of the University of Utah Health system.

The proposed addition would

extend from the north end of HCI’s existing buildings on the campus of the U of U in Salt Lake City. The expansion will be called, The Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women’s Cancers at Huntsman Cancer Institute, and add an additional 100,000 sq. ft. to HCI’s cancer campus, including up to 50

additional inpatient rooms and workspace for oncology specialists. The new proposed structure would also expand the number of procedure, consultation and outpatient exam rooms and would increase the size of the HCI’s Linda B. and Robert B. Wiggins Wellness and Integrative Health Center.

“This expansion reflects HCI’s

continuing commitment to serve cancer patients and to provide access to the compassionate, stateof-the-art care of our comprehensive cancer center,” said HCI’s CEO, Mary Beckerle, PhD. “Growth of our facilities is critical to allow us to reach the patients and families in need of our services. We are extremely fortunate to have the passionate support of so many generous donors for our lifesaving work.”

The plan for the remaining project funds of the estimated $80 million project will be finalized in the coming months. The next step is a review of the proposal by appropriate approval bodies, including the U of U Board of Trustees, the Utah State Legislature and key U of U building oversight committees.

The proposed project timeline estimates construction would begin in December 2019, with an opening planned for fall 2022.

Promotes Innovation in Construction Material Prices, Steel Tariffs Up Construction Cost

Leaders from multiple local governments; the building and design industry; community organizations; appraisers; realtors; and utilities came together to explore how to accelerate the proliferation of net zero energy buildings during Utah’s first ever Net Zero Energy Summit.

This groundbreaking event was headlined by Sam Rashkin, construction industry author and chief architect of the U.S. Dept. of Energy. In addition, government leaders including Laura Nelson, Utah Governor’s Energy Advisor; Park City Mayor Andy Beerman; Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski; Summit County Council Chair Kim Carson; and Moab City Mayor Emily Niehaus are all participating in the event.

“With Utah’s rising population, buildings are set to surpass transportation as our main source of emissions along the Wasatch Front,” said Nelson. “Utah’s first Net Zero Energy Summit is key in exploring opportunities to bring innovative building solutions to market that can continue to provide both economic and environmental outcomes in our thriving state.”

Net zero energy buildings generate as much energy as they utilize, making them a vital component for communities committed to lowering emissions, including Salt Lake City, Park City, Summit County and Moab City, which have each set-forth ambitious carbon reduction goals. The Summit included a “Mayor’s Panel” featuring leaders from

local government discussing how net zero building can help them achieve their ambitious goals, and strategies to make net zero building more commonplace.

Net zero buildings have been around in Utah for several years; yet, they remain the exception in building practices.

This summit offered strategies for the building industry to utilize net zero building practices, and explored opportunities for community, industry and government leaders to increase net zero adoption across the state.

“We’re honored to have so many thought-leaders in the construction industry come to share case studies, innovative strategies, and cost-saving techniques,” said Tiffany Ivins, a leader in Utah’s Net-Zero Consortium “Net zero is an important movement to create better buildings that demand less energy, reduce air emissions, and improve health for humans and our environment.”

As a leader of Utah’s Great Basin Collaborative, David Griffin, added: “Since 40 percent of the local air emissions in our valley come from ‘area sources’, which includes energy consumption in our built environment, what we build and how we build matters. Air quality is a personal issue for me and my asthmatic son. I’m excited to learn from leaders across Utah to raise the bar on building performance.”

LOGAN, Utah (AP) The estimated cost for a new wastewater treatment plant in northern Utah has increased by $25 million over the last two years, and officials said it’s because of climbing construction costs and President Donald Trump’s steel tariffs.

The Logan Herald Journal reported officials are planning to borrow more money and ask for a loan extension so they don’t have to further increase water rates for people in seven Cache County cities that will use the new system.

Mark Nielsen, an engineer overseeing the project, said the estimated price tag’s increase from $106 million to $131 million happened for two key reasons: The booming economy means contractors are charging higher rates, and the tariffs have increased the price of steel.

The area needs to replace its current facility because it doesn’t meet regulations.

The project comes with any number of challenges, not the least of which is working within 15 ft. of an operating airport.

“With airports, you have to phase the construction,” McClellan said. “You have to work around operations and airlines.

Some of the hardest of all is making sure the vendors are happy, the tenants and airlines stay happy and they can keep flying. Working on an active airfield, there is so much security and so much safety.

on an airfield you have other parts of safety you have to work and live with.”

The existing airport sees 340 flights daily, with roughly a quarter of those coming by the work site, McClellan said. “So, we can’t do it all in one shot. We have to do it in parts and pieces. The airlines trump anything we do and we build with them in mind.”

The water table on the site is close to the surface, requiring crews to install dewatering wells 60 ft. below. The water is pumped into tanks, filtered and then released into the storm drain.

Workers also installed about 2,080 stone columns.

“Here, there is a lot of alluvial sands, so we have to do soil improvement,” McClellan said.

“We have to densify the soil. You

have a big probe that goes into the earth 40 feet and is basically injecting gravel into the ground, compacting the earth.”

Equipment on site for the north concourse includes: 40-yd. articulated all-terrain haul trucks; an assortment of rollers, excavators and rubber tire loaders; a guillotine concrete breaker; and numerous cranes, including a Grove 6250 hydraulic, truck mounted crane; a Link-Belt 248 200-ton lattice boom crane; a Liebherr LR 1200SX luffer with 200 ft. of total stick; a Liebherr LR 1300SX luffer with 200 ft. total stick.

Meanwhile, on the original portion of the project, iron workers — an average of 100 on site daily — installed 20,400 tons of structural steel for the south concourse, the terminal gateway and the IAB

connector, which connects the new terminal to the existing terminal connector, said Fred Groome, senior general superintendent of Holder Big D Joint Venture (HDJV).

“We started with Liebherr LR 1200s and brought out the LR 1600 when we started the terminal sequence. We did the concourse in 27 weeks and the terminal in about 36 weeks. Seven tons of the 20,400 tons was in the concourse; the balance was in the terminal gateway and IAB connecter. The steel erection is near completion. We’re still doing deck and detail and we are in progress of installing our skin.”

Other statistics for the terminal and north concourse include: • 761,000 sq. ft. of metal panels, curtain wall (glass) and glazing; • more than 158 mi. of mechanical plumbing and fire protection piping; • more than 1600 mi. of fiber strands; and • more than 6 mi. of baggage conveyors.

“The most important part of what we do when we build next to an existing facility is zero impact to existing operations,” Groome said.

“We’re focused on building on time and maintaining a budget, but we also have to keep existing operations going with no impact. It’s most interesting and most complex.

“When you look at airport construction, there is just so much technology involved — WiFi-distributed antennas, security, baggage equipment, technology in the baggage standing devices. All of the public comes through here, so you have to have a higher level of finish. I like that the architecture is based on that. We can see the airfield and feel a part of it; but the higher-level finishes and open spaces and a lot of art that gets integrated, that is pretty special, as well.

“Thirty or forty years ago, it wasn’t as important to feel a part of the airfield. It’s a wonderful experience. On top of that, with all the glass, you also see the beautiful views of the mountains.”

The Utah Department of Transportation recently engaged in a 17-hour effort to create 1,600 ft. worth of floodwater barriers from re-purposed concrete highway dividers near the towns of Elk Ridge and Woodland Hills.

Wildfires in those two areas this summer made the topography more susceptible to flooding, which is why the municipalities called on the Utah DOT for help, said Shane Marshall, the agency’s deputy director.

“These guys doing the work out here are from this area; these are their neighbors,” he said. “They want to help as much as they possibly can. These are used barriers we did not have any real use for — so we brought them over here and got to put them to good use.”
