Snowbasin Resort Planning Major Construction Upgrades Snowbasin Resort recently announced significant enhancements and upgrades to the resort and guest experience, starting with the construction of new lifts and a parking expansion for the upcoming season; and ultimately, the introduction of overnight accommodations, including a hotel and village master plan.

Projects planned during the next several years include: Chairlifts Middle Bowl Triple will be replaced in 2021 with a high-speed six-person lift.

Littlecat Express will be upgraded by late 2024 to a multi-use lift with upload and download capabilities to serve both skiers and foot passengers. New lifts are expected to be constructed in the new Ridgeline Beginner Area, adjacent to the existing beginner area served by Littlecat Express.

Ridgeline Terrain, Snowmaking Expanded beginner terrain is planned near the resort base area that will provide multiple options for the beginner skier.

Village Master Plan In coordination with renowned resort developers East-West Partners, new developments near Earl’s Lodge will include restaurants, shops, lodging and other programming near the base area.

Hotel Addition of a 300 room all-inclusive hotel

A new Ridgeline chairlift, beginner terrain, parking and hotel are planned for completion by December 2024. Construction of the resort village is planned to commence by 2025, with additional retail, residential and resort amenities to be added over the span of many years. East West Partners, North America’s most experienced mountain resort developer, and international planning firm Ecosign are engaged with Snowbasin in planning and coordination of development activities.

Parking A total of 435 spaces will be added through expansion in the Maples and Canyon Rim Parking areas in 2021 with additional parking planned for Canyon Rim in the future.

UDOT Wins Quality of Life/Community Development Award The Utah Department of Transportation earned an AASHTO Regional award for its work on I-15 Lehi Main to SR 92.

The projects for the competition are divided into three sizes: small (projects costing up to $25 million); medium (projects that cost between $26 million to $200 million); and large (more than $200 million).

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) recently announced the Top 12 finalists in the 2021 America’s Transportation Awards competition.

Work on I-15 — known as the Technology Corridor — Lehi Main to SR 92, has earned the Utah of Department of Transportation the selection of Quality of Life/Community Development in the competition. This project falls under the category of “large” projects in the competition as the job eclipsed more than $200 million in construction costs.

Sponsored by AASHTO, AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the competition evaluates projects in three categories: Quality of Life/Community Development; Best Use of Technology & Innovation; and Operations Excellence.

“While the last 18 months have brought so much uncertainty, one thing that has remained the same is the commitment from state DOTs to deliver a safe and efficient multimodal transportation system for our communities,” AASHTO Executive Director Jim Tymon said in a statement. “This competition recognizes just a few examples that highlight the ways in which state DOTs are improving quality of life and economic vitality of our communities, saving time and money through new innovations and technologies, and making better use of assets already in place.

Project’s Need Rapid growth in Lehi led to traffic congestion along the I15 corridor, impacting drivers and surrounding communities. To address this and to prepare the area for continued growth, the UDOT, with the help of contractor crews, completed a $415 million project that reconfigured I-15 and made multimodal improvements. Through extensive concept analysis and stakeholder collaboration with the business community, transit agency, local municipality and area planning authorities, the team developed an active transportation network with shared-use paths parallel to the frontage roads and safer crossings at S.R. 92, Triumph Boulevard and 2100 North. The trail network includes multiple structures to keep bicyclists and pedestrians separated and safely away from vehicle traffic. Now all drivers and non-motorized commuters experience a safer, more connected transportation system that better serves the community.

Mitchell Shaw, UDOT’s communications manager, said, “The biggest challenge was to keep traffic moving while another main north/south corridor in the area, U.S.-89, has been simultaneously under construction.”

“The Tech Corridor project was much more than just a transportation project for motor vehicles,” said Lehi City Community Development Director Kim Struthers. “Along with it, we now have a great looped bike and pedestrian path on each side of the freeway. This will allow easier commuting to our employment center by alternate modes of transportation. It will also serve recreational users, and allows bikers, walkers and joggers to tie into the extensive surrounding network of trails including the Murdock Canal Trail, Jordan River Parkway Trail and the Southern Rail Trail. A key component to the looped trail system are the grade separated crossings at the I-15 at the SR 92 interchange, Triumph Boulevard and State Street that allow people to get across the freeway and major arterial roads in a much safer and comfortable way.”

Jacobsen Construction Hosts Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson makes remarks at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Jacobsen Construction’s new headquarters.

Prominent state and local government leaders joined with Jacobsen Construction Company employees to cut the ribbon on the general contractor’s new headquarters in Salt Lake City’s International Center.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, Salt County Mayor Jenny Wilson and Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall all shared remarks at the Sept. 3 celebration, describing how the contemporary new headquarters symbolizes the construction industry’s success in powering Utah’s nation-leading recovery from the COVID-19 economic crisis.

Jacobsen President and CEO Gary Ellis also spoke to employees and special guests gathered for the outdoor occasion, describing the company’s recently completed modern workplace at 5181 W. Amelia Earhart Dr. He called the building an investment in Jacobsen’s people, its future and its community.

“Jacobsen’s new headquarters is a tangible, powerful way for the company to chart its own path ahead and innovate and invest in its people and the community as never before,” Ellis said.

Jacobsen, a nearly $1 billion company with $2.1 billion of work in its pipeline, has a deep and far-reaching impact on Utah’s economic strength, due to the construction trade’s enormous impacts on supply chains, small business subcontractors, and community growth and development. With most of Jacobsen’s headquarters constructed during 2020, the building’s progress also served as a hopeful sign that the construction industry

could help Utah’s resilient economy come roaring back to life amid the many pressing challenges of the pandemic.
