Sundt Construction Inc. earned a prestigious award for its work on the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Interstate 80 (I-80) Westbound highway improvement project.

The project was recognized as the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Utah Chapter’s Highway Project of the Year.

The University of Utah, along with the Ken Garff family, officially cut the ribbon on the $80 million Ken Garff Red Zone at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Under a clear blue sky and bright sunshine, the event served as the official unveiling of the stadium expansion that encloses the south end of Rice-Eccles Stadium, provides brand-new premium seating experiences, team locker room and game-day amenities, while increasing the seating capacity to 51,444.

University of Utah Interim President Michael L. Good, incoming President Taylor Randall, Athletics Director Mark Harlan and Head Football Coach Kyle Whittingham participated in the ceremonial ribbon cutting alongside members of the Ken Garff family. Also in attendance were members of the Rice and Eccles families.

“Today is an historic day, not only for the athletics department and our student-athletes, but certainly for this university,” Harlan said. “This is an amazing project. It seems like a short twoand-a-half years ago when we went through the approval process, and now we are here. They say when you build it, they will come. But they have already been coming to Rice-Eccles Stadium. We have been sold out for every game since 2010. This allows 4,500 more people to join the party.”

Kathi Garff spoke on behalf of the Garff family, and was joined on the stage by sons John and Matt.

“The Ken Garff Red Zone will not only benefit our football program, but it will benefit more than 500 student-athletes who are annually a part of the greater university athletics family," Kathi Garff said. "My husband Bob had a dream that the Ken Garff Red Zone could attract and unite the finest faculty, build and retain the most gifted athletes, and attract and develop the greatest students. He also had a dream that the Ken Garff Red Zone could be a gathering place to encourage the faculty, the business community, families and students to be able to enjoy these facilities year-round.”

The Garff family’s $21.5 million donation served as the lead gift for the project and stands as the largest single donation in Utah Athletics history.

“I want to share my congratulations and express my gratitude to Kathi and the entire Garff family for this incredible new facility,” Good said. "I know the Ken Garff Red Zone will advance our entire university."

The expansion is a game-changing addition for the University of Utah, the athletics department and the Utah football program to improve both the student-athlete and fan experience. The improvements include major enhancements to the game-day environment for fans as well as new locker rooms, sports medicine facilities and other

football operations spaces that will also boost recruiting efforts.

“I want to thank Mark Harlan and his team, and the team at Layton Construction," Randall said. "They put up this place in a pandemic. Think about the supply-chain issues, the cost issues we've had, and the need to preserve people's health. Thank you to all of them. What you are staring at with this new facility is $41 million in donations.

The addition of both premium and non-premium seating includes suite, loge box, ledge, club and premium terrace seating, and an increased number of bench seats.

An expert team of planners, designers and contractors including Populous, VCBO Architecture and Layton Construction completed final touches on the project, which hosted its first game when the Utes took on Weber State to open the 2021 football season on Sept. 2.

“This is a place of community, a place where, when the Utes are up by 75, you'd still want to be there and you wouldn't want to go home early," Randall added. "And this is that place.

This is a true differentiator for our football program.” 

National transportation officials recently approved more than 550 mil. of bike routes in Utah to the United States Bicycle Routes System (USBRS). These newly designated routes enhance safety and ease for biking in Utah.

The routes, approved by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), now boost Utah’s total USBRS to around 960 mi. of streets, highways and trails for rider use throughout the state. Newly designated bicycle routes 77, 677, 877, 79 and 679 now connect riders from Idaho to Arizona in this developing national network of bicycle routes.

“These routes allow commuters, bicycle tourists and leisure cyclists a unique way to travel safely across Utah’s beautiful and diverse landscape,” UDOT Active Transportation Manager Heidi Goedhart said. “As more and more Utahns take advantage of active transportation, we expect to see less traffic congestion, greater economic development, and healthier citizens–three wins for communities everywhere.”

Adventure Cycling, a national cyclist advocacy group, partnered with UDOT and Move Utah to develop this north/south, state-to-state route over the last four years.

During that time, the group looked for routes that provided riders the most safety and protection, local points of interest, accommodations and bike friendly shops, among others.

Developing the route also required coordination with multiple groups. For example, UDOT coordinated with, and got permissions from, the Departments of Transportation in both Idaho and Arizona regarding state line tie-in locations.

Similarly, whenever a route was not on a state road, the group acquired approval and letters of support from local jurisdictions.

There are several benefits that come from the USBRS designation. For example, with this designation, new signs will be installed to direct bicyclists to a preferred route through a city, county, or state. Additionally, the designated routes ensure that a rider’s experience and safety is considered.

“Experiencing Utah by bicycle is a rewarding way to slow down, get off the highway and explore the state’s scenic beauty,” said Vicki Varela, managing director of the Utah Office of Tourism. “These routes demonstrate the commitment of our state and local communities to build something better for both Utah residents and Utah visitors. “ As part of Utah’s new route system, there are 105 mi. of continuous safe and separated cycling trails located along the urbanized Wasatch Front. The route also takes riders along beautiful rivers, parkways and vistas. Not only do these designations help bring bicycle tourism to Utah, but the benefits are also seen locally by assisting in building out and planning other active transportation facilities.

Contractor Utilizes Laser-Guided 2D System On Excavator According to Ryan Goodfellow, owner and operator of Rock Structures Utility & Excavating in Ogden, Utah, one of the disadvantages to being a “small guy” in the construction business is the additional manpower it takes to get jobs dug to grade, as he said in his recent video for the ConExpoCon/AGG Tech Talk “2D Basement Set Up and Dig.” That’s one reason he uses laser-guided, 2D grade control systems on his excavator.

During his Tech Talk, Goodfellow showed how to set up a basement dig, enter equipment configuration and start digging a basement in a subdivision development in less than 13 minutes.

“I have two machines set up like this,” Goodfellow explains. “Return on investment, for us, is about three months on a 2D system.

“Sometimes the 2D systems are perfect for the smaller guys who don’t have the time to model stuff out,” Goodfellow said while demonstrating how to use a Trimble Earthworks 2D system to dig and grade a basement. “This way, you don’t have to have a laborer down there checking grade for you.

You can have that laborer go and do something else.”

New Rural Project Aims to Tap Into Geothermal Energy MILFORD, Utah (AP) Just outside Milford, a town of approximately 1,400 people in southwest Utah, researchers behind a major energy project are hoping to tap into a limitless supply of clean, reliable power.

The energy exists thousands of feet below us, where the natural heat from the Earth’s core can be used to create electricity.

Researchers at the Utah-based FORGE lab are working on technology to create geothermal reservoirs almost anywhere in the world, according to reports.

Geothermal power already exists, but currently makes up just 0.4 percent of energy production in the United States. So far it’s largely been limited to select areas around naturally-occurring hot springs, such as the Roosevelt Hot Springs in Beaver County.

FORGE lab researchers have recently completed one of two major wells they’ll use to develop the tools to build “enhanced geothermal systems,” or EGS — human-made versions of natural geothermal reservoirs which pump water through cracks underground, heat it and use the steam to power turbines or to heat buildings.

If successful, the project and others like it could lead to “a 40-fold increase over present geothermal power generating capacity,” according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Researchers at the Utah-based FORGE lab are working on technology to create geothermal reservoirs almost anywhere in the world, according to reports.

“The world is looking at Milford,” said Joseph Moore, a geologist and lead researcher at FORGE. “We’re working with groups around the world who are watching this because this is a first. A lot of people are very interested.”

Moore said the project is not designed to

generate electricity per se, but to develop the tools to create geothermal energy in a reliable, cost-effective way.

At a time when the effects of climate change have become increasingly pronounced and electric utilities are facing pressure to move towards renewable energy,

geothermal offers great promise as a reliable source, he said. There are little to no emissions. Unlike solar and wind, power can be created at any time. The groundwater used also can be recycled continuously.

But no one has managed to create EGS at a commercial scale.

Some of the primary barriers have been upfront cost and the technical challenge of creating cracks in the rock underground.

There also have been concerns that the process of creating those fissures can lead to earthquakes. Moore said small, mostly imperceptible ones have occurred at the Milford location, but researchers closely monitor any seismic activity and are getting better at identifying areas that are low-risk.

“We’re learning how to manage and mitigate risks and be more and more careful,” he said. “There’s an opportunity here to develop these tools where we can do it anywhere and that’s important. We see this as an important potential energy source in the future.”

The project is funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy, which provided about $220 million for research through 2024. Moore said he expects the funding to be renewed so they can continue to work past that date. 

Officials Award Millions of Dollars for Recreation Projects The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) recently announced the most significant grant funding to date from the Utah Outdoor Recreation Grant.

The office will award $7.6 million in matching grants to 99 outdoor recreation infrastructure projects across Utah, totaling $54.4 million in project value — a 7:1 investment of state dollars. The Utah Outdoor Recreation Grant receives funding from the state transient room tax, and, in 2021, the Utah Legislature supplemented the grant fund with an additional $4 million in one-time funding.

“We were excited to see so many people enjoying the great outdoors this past year.

The sheer numbers of people on trails and in the campgrounds in 2020 were mind-blowing,” said Pitt Grewe, director of the Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation.

“Communities are seeing the need to renovate decades-old trails or build new ones after seeing the demand increasing from both their residents and tourists. We’re happy to award these matching funds to enable cities, towns, counties, and nonprofits across Utah to invest in the outdoor recreation projects for which their residents are asking. The grants will enable communities to build a wide range of projects from trails and fishing piers to archery ranges for the enjoyment of both locals and visitors.”

The Utah Outdoor Recreation Grant supports significant infrastructure projects built in Utah communities in multi-year stages. A recent project example is the third phase of the Pahvant Mountain Bike Trail System in Sevier County, which was awarded $333,070. It will add 14 miles of single-track for a total of 47 miles of purpose-built moun-

tain bike trails in the Richfield area.

Jimmy Seear, the co-founder of CSS Composites, said the company is establishing its composite manufacturing facility in Richfield and is excited about the rapidly expanding trail system in Sevier County.

“Watching a town like Richfield invest in cycling infrastructure attracts manufacturing jobs to the community while offering endless trails to enjoy. Richfield City and Sevier County are doing a great job in establishing outdoor activities and trail systems to make it a fantastic community for both work and play,” said Seear.

Twenty-three of Utah’s 29 counties received project funding. Some examples of the funded projects are a river recreation project on the Logan River, a climbing anchor replacement project in Maple Canyon in Sanpete County, and an archery range on Antelope Island. Grewe added, “We remain committed to helping rural Utah. This year’s grant cycle saw a significant investment from the program, as the

Utah Outdoor Recreation Grant advisory committee awarded 70% of the grant funding to rural counties.”

The Zion Forever Project was awarded $500,000 for the second phase of the East Zion Mountain Bike Trail System in Kane county. The project creates a world-class recreational experience on the eastern gateway of the fourth most visited park in the National Park System. This project adds 24.5 miles to a 10-mile loop, built in the first phase of the project, connecting riders to a new East Zion Visitor center. The total cost of the project will be just over $2.1 million.

Mark Preiss, Zion Forever Project director, said, “The East Zion Initiative is a legacy project that is made possible through the kind of public, private collaboration expressed through this grant program.”

Since 2015, the Utah Outdoor Recreation Grant has awarded over $23.8 million to over 300 projects for building or restoring outdoor recreation infrastructure across Utah. It awards up to $150,000 for building

new trails and other types of recreation infrastructure and up to $500,000 in the Regional Asset Tier category. In addition to funding new recreation infrastructure, the Office of Outdoor Recreation grants fund projects to rehabilitate existing infrastructure and projects to create permanent infrastructure to support nature-based STEM learning or outdoor recreation skill building for K-12 youth.

“The easy access to outdoor recreation opportunities significantly contributes to Utah’s quality of life, Utah’s economy, and the ability to attract and retain high-quality employees and jobs in the state,” said Dan Hemmert, GOED’s executive director. “The continued investment provided by the Office of Outdoor Recreation’s grant programs in outdoor recreation infrastructure will have lasting effects on the health and strength of its residents, businesses, and the economy.”

Big-D Construction, ajc architects Build Education Center Crews from Big D Construction and ajc architects recently completed a new technical education facility that is now open as part of Salt Lake Community College. The new Westpointe Workforce Training & Education Center (WWTEC) will train students for business and industrial careers. The WWTEC, which aims to address a technical skills deficit in Utah’s STEM fields, is located in the industrial Northwest Quadrant, an area of the capital city that has been heretofore underserved in the area of higher education.

SRG’s partners on the $43 million project — of which $33 million went to construction alone — included architect of record ajc architects and general contractor Big-D Construction, both of which are located in Salt Lake City.

Under one roof, the WWTEC will feature classrooms for instruction in specialized technical areas such as welding, plastics, diesel technology and CDL truck driving instruction.

SRG Partnership, which is based in Portland and Seattle, designed the 121,000-sq.-ft. building as a “flexible” modern space for education. Learning features include laboratories

and “shop spaces” that are meant to mimic real-world work environments that students might one day encounter in the field.

SRG said that replicating real-world environments at the school will also give some of the students a leg up when it comes to applying for jobs in their fields, according to a statement.

“With 46 percent of SLCC’s students taking career and technical education courses, the Westpointe Workforce Education and Training Center is making a huge impact to close the gap for the need of skilled workers for Utah’s economic development and ensure long-term vitality of the community,” the statement noted.

The building’s interiors feature high ceilings, a marriage between indoor and outdoor space and ample natural daylight for interior spaces. Furthermore, social areas have been specifically set aside to promote interactions between students and between students and staff. A solar roof also aims to neutralize the building’s carbon foot-

print entirely.

SRG said that the site of the WWTEC has a fault line running through it, as well as a below-ground high-pressure gas line — both of which had to be considered as the construction went along.

“This limited the area of building footprint available and led to the elongated form” of the building, the statement said. “The magnitude of its scale and volume at over 600 [feet] long was a challenge. The design team was sensitive to addressing the human scale by breaking up the mass through form and materials.”

Furthermore, the designer ensured that learning spaces themselves would face away from busy I-215 nearby.

“This allowed for the academic areas and entrances to be [at] pedestrian scale while the machine and industrial scale of the building was parallel to the freeway,” the statement said.

“The building placement also provided an opportunity for SLCC branding and advertising on the east facade facing the freeway to help draw attention and interest.” 
