Link-Belt Excavator Excels on Rice-Eccles Demo Job

Layton Construction, based in Sandy, began its demolition on Monday, Aug. 24, at The University of Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium. The project was pushed up three months after the 2020 Pac-12 football season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After months of excavating, pouring of deep foundations and placement of shoring walls, the first steel will begin to be erected in October.

Layton Construction Project Manager Jared Adamson said the demolition of the 40-year-old

building should take about five weeks to compete. It was originally scheduled to be taken down after the 2020 football season, but those plans were pushed up more than three months due to the cancelation of the Pac-12 2020 football season because of the coronavirus pan-

demic.

“We have a high-reach excavator that has a ‘muncher’ on it,” Adamson said in an interview.

“Rather than imploding the building, it is much safer and it allows us to have smaller pieces of concrete to haul away. We have two

excavators with the munchers on them, and they’ll work from the west to east.”

The material will be hauled offsite to be recycled and reused, according to Adamson. see UTAH page 6

Morgan Asphalt employed some nontraditional methods — such as a hammer hoe to chip away rock and a telebelt to assist in getting materials to areas where traditional equipment was unable to reach — in an effort to counter the difficulties that arose from both winter conditions and the steep and rocky terrain.

Olympic Park Construction Still Remains on Schedule The gradual expansion of the Utah Olympic Park’s facilities in Kimball Junction is aimed at offering year-round training opportunities for local athletes.

Phase one of the project was completed last year and fundraising for phase two is well underway. The UOP has seen regular yearround use by elite athletes from around the world and members of the public since the conclusion of the 2002 Winter Olympics.

The facilities slowly grew over the years from the original ski jumps, water ramps,

Novva to Build $1B Hyperscale Campus in West Jordan A new company has launched with a plan to develop a $1 billion hyperscale campus in Utah.

Novva has already begun building one data center on its planned 10-acre campus in West Jordan.

The privately held company said the project will be the state’s largest purposebuilt multi-tenant campus for enterprise clients. Headed by CEO Wes Swenson, Wes Swenson the company is funded by CIM Group, a Novva REIT owner, operator, lender and developer. Since it was founded in 1994, it has worked on a portfolio of approximately $60 billion in infrastructure projects, including data centers.

A total of $1 billion will be invested over the next several years into the campus with hopes it can attract customers from competitors in Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and Oregon.

The construction is taking place over four phases and will total more than 1.5 million sq. ft. of data center space when finished, should all phases be completed.

The data center will be available for client deployments in early 2021.

“The facilities are imaginatively engineered, purpose-designed and built, and of such scale that it will accommodate 250KW clients to 30MW clients,” said Swenson.

Swenson is the former CEO of C7 Data Centers, which was acquired by Databank in 2017. “We believe Utah is a hidden gem for one of the largest wholesale co-location campuses in the United States,” he said.

“Some of its attributes include low-cost power, low disaster risk, low latency, dense long haul fiber, high altitude cold desert, central western U.S. location, an expanding international airport and no sales tax on equipment purchases.”

Novva’s data centers will allow for bespoke suites, optional turn-key, as well as secure multi-tenant services. The company also has designed and engineered the facilities to operate without water yearround, with a cooling system designed in collaboration with BASX Solutions.

The facilities also allow for short-cycle demand builds, carrier-neutral, flexible power designs in N, N+1, and 2N, and a downward flow hot air containment system. 

About eight months ago, construction started on this project that will add 5,000 seats to the stadium’s capacity (45,807 increased to 51.444). The Ken Garff Performance Center at Rice-Eccles Stadium will also house both team locker rooms, officials’ locker rooms, sports medicine facilities and many other spaces dedicated to game-day personnel at field level, plus a large field club.

Aside from amenities, the new construction also will include luxury suites, loge box, ledge and club seating and a number of bleacher seats will increase in the south end zone.

The new Ken Garff Performance Zone at Rice-Eccles Stadium is scheduled to open in 2021.

the major remodeling of the former Rice-Eccles Stadium. The field was lowered at that time by nine ft. and more seats were added on the sidelines and in the south end zone.

The new building was named in recognition of a $1 million grant made by local businessman Spence Clark. The funds were used to build new locker rooms, a stadium club room and a band room, as well as the structure for the south end zone seating.

The Spence Clark Football center was the only portion of the previous stadium kept intact when the it underwent a major expansion and renovation in 1998 in preparation for hositng the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics.

After that, the facility was known as Rice-Eccles Stadium.

In April 2019 the Garff family generously pledged $17.5 million toward the $80 million project that will transform the home of Utah football and provide a world-class student-athlete experience.

Mines Closures Set to Begin The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining Abandoned Mine Reclamation Program (AMRP) has five upcoming abandoned mine closure projects scheduled to begin in late summer/early fall of 2020. Closures are designed to protect features of historic significance and animal habitat, while protecting the public from injuries or death.

Abandoned mines are hazardous because they are no longer maintained, lack ventilation and may collapse. All of the work is performed with approval from landowners and in coordination with land management agencies. Below is a summary of several of these projects.

The Willard Peak Project proposes to safeguard approximately 50 abandoned hardrock mine openings on the west face of the Wellsville and Wasatch mountain ranges in Box Elder, Weber and Davis counties. All the openings are located on private land and lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service. The project will secure abandoned mine openings using earthen backfills, steel grates, concrete block walls, and polyurethane foam plugs.

The Buckmaster-OIG Project is located in Emery County, north of I-70 and east of the East Reef of the San Rafael Swell in

Buckmaster Draw. The project will close approximately 40 abandoned uranium mine openings within a portion of the San Rafael River mining district. All the mines in the project are located on lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and have been identified as high priority hazards to public safety by a directive from the U.S. Office of Inspector General (OIG). A second phase is planned to address the remaining abandoned mines in the district.

Closure methods include earthen backfills, steel grates and concrete block walls.

The White Canyon and Deer Flat Project proposes to safeguard 83 abandoned uranium mine openings and 30 vent holes in San Juan County. All the openings are located on public lands administered by the BLM and State Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA). Access to the mines will be on existing routes designated in the BLM Monticello Travel Management Plan, however, some work areas will require temporary use of old mine roads, which are not designated routes. Closure methods include earthen backfills, steel grates, polyurethane foam plugs, and concrete block walls.
