Phase I of SLC Airport’s $3.6B Expansion Nears Completion

Construction on Phase 1 of the new $3.6B Salt Lake City Airport has made significant progress in the past few months. Concrete pours, paving and steel erection have been highlights. Ground was broken for the new facilities in July 2014.

According to the airport’s website, prior to the aboveground work, underground stone columns were installed to provide seismic stability and steel piles were installed to support the weight of the building.

In May, scaffolding came down on The New SLC plaza, featuring a 45-ft. tall window curtain wall. Paving began at the arrivals terminal and concrete pours for the east pedestrian bridge were completed.

June saw steel erection completed for the Terminal building’s expansion; the beginning of concrete pours for the sidewalks; and concrete being poured for the pedestrian walkway from the parking garage to the Gateway.

In July, crews poured the final section of the elevated roadway. This road is expected to ease congestion and will be used for dropping off passengers. Crews also began dismantling tower cranes over the complex’s parking garage. see AIRPORT page 6

$163M I-15 Layton to Riverdale Express Lane Project Begins

Work on the largest design-bid-build project ever let by the state of Utah has begun. When complete, the $163 million project will add 10 mi. of express lanes between the Layton Parkway interchange in Layton and the I-84 interchange in Riverdale, just outside of Ogden.

“This will complete about 86 miles of express lanes also known in other places as HOV or carpool lanes,” said Vic Saunders, spokesman for region one of the Utah Department of Transportation. “It will be the longest stretch of continuous HOV anywhere in the United States.”

Savage to Design, Build, Operate Rail ABC Names Big-D to Facility for ExxonMobil-SABIC Project 2019 Top-Performing Savage has been selected by ExxonMobil and SABIC to design, build and operate a rail facility to be constructed in San Patricio County, Texas.

Savage has been selected by ExxonMobil and SABIC to design, build and operate a rail facility that will serve their recently announced joint venture — Gulf Coast Growth Ventures (GCGV) — to be constructed in San Patricio County Texas. The rail facility will be located adjacent to the GCGV facility and will handle railcars transporting polyethylene, a plastic polymer used in the production of many commercial and consumer products.

“We’re excited to partner with GCGV on rail infrastructure and operations to support what will be a world-class petrochemical facility,” said Brad Crist, Savage’s Energy and Chemical Sector President. “Our nearly two decades of handling plastics and working with major industry producers, coupled with our extensive rail experience, enable us to design this rail facility from an operator’s perspective to ensure it functions safely, efficiently and reliably without impact on the surrounding environment.”

The rail facility is expected to be completed in 2021, in anticipation of GCGV’s planned startup by 2022. Savage will provide multiple services at the site including rail switching and indexing, railcar washing and loading, railcar repairs and facility maintenance. Construction and operation of the rail facility will comprise part of the thousands of highpaying jobs and billions in economic output that will be created by the GCGV project.
