Jacobsen Construction: Best General Contractor in State Jacobsen Construction Company is getting used to collecting hardware.

The Utah-based business recently earned a prestigious award recognizing it as the top general contractor in the state.

Jacobsen won Utah’s Best of State 2020 award in the category of General Contractor, making it six of the past seven years that the company has secured a Best of State honor.

“This prestigious honor is a show of recognition that there is absolutely something special happening at Jacobsen,” said former Jacobsen President and CEO Doug Welling. “We are transforming Salt Lake City’s downtown and skyline, building vital health care facilities, sustaining Utah as a recreation destination and shaping the higher education experience in Utah. DESRI Acquires Solar Project In continuation of its fifth transaction with Community Energy, D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI) has acquired the Hunter solar project of 100 MW capacity in Utah from a Pennsylvania-headquartered renewable energy project developer.

Further, this Hunter solar project has a longterm power purchase agreement (PPA) with PacifiCorp and it will provide data center operations of Facebook with the renewable energy certificates from this new solar power.

Commenting on the acquisition, Bryan Martin, executive chairman of DESRI, said that “DESRI is very pleased to close its fifth transaction with Community Energy. We are very excited to be able to work with Community Energy, Facebook and PacifiCorp to expand our solar presence in Utah.”

The financing for this Hunter solar project was provided by a syndicate of lenders led

by HSBC as coordinating lead arranger and CIBC as joint lead arranger, while Wells Fargo provided a commitment for tax equity financing.

Swinerton Renewable Energy, an EPC and SOLV services provider for solar photovoltaic (PV) plants and energy storage facilities in North America, will construct the project and provide operations and maintenance (O&M) services following its commercial operations date (COD).

While talking about the project ownership, Emily Burks, executive vice president and general counsel of Community Energy, said that “Community Energy is inspired by the partnership and leadership of DESRI, Facebook, PacifiCorp and Emery County in making the 100 MW Hunter project a reality.

“This project illustrates the strong commitment that DESRI, Facebook and PacifiCorp have to bring cost-effective, renewable energy to the Utah grid. The Hunter project takes us all one step closer to bringing America towards a carbon-free energy future,” Burks added.

On the opportunities the project will offer, George Hershman, president of Swinerton Renewable Energy, commented that “construction on Hunter Solar provides an employment opportunity for hundreds of workers during a period marked by downturn and layoffs in many other industries.

Solar projects like Hunter are helping keep Americans working safely and the economy moving forward.”

This project has already moved into the construction phase and is expected to employ more than 300 people during construction. The project also is expected to create significant tax revenue to Emery County over the project life. 

Kraemer North America Builds UVU Pedestrian Bridge Construction of the new Interstate 15 pedestrian bridge that will connect Utah Valley University with the UTA FrontRunner Orem Central Station is underway, with the approximate completion date set for December 2020.

Crews will deliver a haunched steel plate girder with hydronically heated, cast-in place deck bridge.

Earlier this summer, crews delivered the first set of steel beams for the UVA pedestrian bridge. Segments were also placed over College Drive.

“This bridge is a symbol of UVU’s commitment to sustainability, clean air, and reducing traffic,” said Astrid S. Tuminez, president of Utah Valley University. “We are grateful to the Utah Department of Transportation and the Utah Transit Authority for their vision, resources, and support of this project.”

The bridge will include a 15-ft. wide, partially enclosed walkway with heating elements in the floor for snow removal. There will be ample room for cyclists and pedestrians. High-capacity elevators and stairs will be provided at each end of the bridge for accessibility compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. “This is the longest pedestrian bridge that we are aware of

in the state of Utah, with it being almost 1,100 feet in length, as well as being nearly 2 million tons of steel when you add the roof to it,” said Geoff Dupaix, the senior communications manager for UDOT Region 3. “That is the equivalent of about four to five freight engines put together, so that’s a lot of steel.”

The new pedestrian bridge will have elevators at each end to accommodate ADA, scooters and bicycles crossing the bridge from the campus to the Utah Transit Authority Intermodal Center. Along each stairway will be a bike wheel path for people to walk bikes up and down.

Transportation-building partnerships between government entities are rare. The partners are hopeful the model can be used in future state transportation projects. UTA contributed $4 million to the project, UVU contributed $6 million, and UDOT contributed $20.7 million. The city of Orem and the Mountainland Association of Governments were also instrumental in driving early concepts of the project.

The majority of the work will not affect local traffic or UVU operations. However, I-15 will close briefly at night when construction crews place bridge beams and set concrete. UDOT will give two-week advance notices before the closures. 
