WW Clyde, Ralph L. Wadsworth Complete Bangerter Job The Joint Venture of WW Clyde and Ralph L. Wadsworth (RLW), working in conjunction with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), has completed construction of major infrastructure projects in Taylorsville, South Jordan and Riverton.

Crews have reconstructed three new freeway-style interchanges at 6200 South in Taylorsville/West Jordan, 10400 South in South Jordan and 12600 South in Riverton. The projects included removing all stoplights and separating Bangerter Highway from the local cross streets, which in turn will improve traffic flow and safety for drivers in western Salt Lake County.

“We think these Bangerter Interchange reconstructions are literally the hardest projects [UDOT] undertakes,” said Jeff Mikell, senior projet mananger of WW Clyde. He helped oversee the $221 million job along with Clint Wiscombe of Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction, who serves as construction manager of the WW/RLW Joint-Venture team.

Mikell also was on the $240-million Bangerter Four Interchanges project that wrapped up near the end of 2018, so he’s well-versed on how difficult it is to transform traditional intersections into full-on highway interchanges.

“Bangerter Three is as much work as Bangerter Four, with a similar size and schedule, but it’s proven to be more complex and costly,” Mikell added. “But we have a lot of synergy with our team and [UDOT Project Director] Marwan [Farah] on the UDOT side. Been there, done that.”

This portion of construction is part of the overall Bangerter Highway reconstruction project in which officials allocated $805 million in an effort to make Bangerter Highway more like a freeway by eliminating stoplights.

Construction Progressing On BYU’s New Music Building Construction crews are making considerable progress on the new music building at Brigham Young University, which was approved in February 2020.

Currently under construction by Big D Construction (with HKS Architects as the architecture firm), the new digs are expected to open by November 2022, according to University Communications.

The 170,000 sq.-ft. building will be located in the southwest corner of the parking lot east of the J. Reuben Clark Law School and will feature a number of upgrades to the facilities the School of Music currently has in the Harris Fine Arts Center.

The new music building will increase the amount of square-footage the school works with and will fix a number of problems that current music students currently face, such as the lack of a concert hall and a choral room — currently students practice and perform in an auditorium — and rooms that are not fit well acoustically to the point of being a “safety issue.”

“We actually have a situation, where because the sonic volume gets so high in the orchestra and band rooms, that students are required to wear earplugs,” said Ed Adams, dean of the BYU College of Fine Arts and Communications, adding that the School of Music director compared the situation to “giving painters gloves and sunglasses to do what they do.”

“We are humbled and thrilled with the board’s support of the College of Fine Arts and Communications,” said Adams. “The Church has a long history of supporting music and the arts, and this new building will expand upon the university’s commitment to producing inspiring and uplifting art.”

BYU Approves New Art Building The Brigham Young University board of trustees has approved plans to construct a new Arts Building for the College of Fine Arts and Communications. It will be built where the Harris Fine Arts Center (HFAC) is currently located.

Demolition of the HFAC is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2023 following the completion of the new Music Building.

Construction of the new Arts Building will commence immediately after the demolition. The project is expected to be completed toward the end of 2025. Big D Construction has been selected as the general contractor for the project, with HKS Architects as the architecture firm.

The college will temporarily occupy the former Provo High School located on University Avenue while the new Arts Building is being constructed.

The HFAC was dedicated in 1965 and currently houses four of the college’s six academic units. The School of Music also uses the building and will move into the new Music Building upon its completion at the end of 2022.

The new Arts Building will house offices for the college, as well as for the departments of Art, Design and Theater & Media Arts (TMA). It also will host academic spaces, galleries, performance spaces, media viewing rooms, a cinema and a production studio.

The other current occupants of the HFAC, the School of Music, will move to the new Music Building, which is currently being constructed.

“The arts and music programs are beacons of excellence for the university,” said Shane Reese, BYU academic vice president.

Big D Construction (with HKS Architects as the architecture firm) is serving as the general contractor on BYU’s new Music Building, which is expected to be completed by November 2023.

“We look forward to these two new beautiful buildings, which will accentuate the amazing talents of our students, faculty and staff who work in that college.”

The building will house a large collaborative hub for Department of Design students as well as multiple art and design galleries.

There also will be a combination lobby and student gathering space. A six-station lacta-

tion room will accommodate students and their families as well as patrons.

“The new building will create proximity and more opportunities for collaboration and student mentoring,” said Adams. “Our faculty and staff are now spread over five floors and are located at the far ends of the Harris Fine Arts Center from each other.”

WW Clyde Crews Execute Upgrades at Bridal Veil Falls

During construction the Provo River Parkway Trail was closed.

WW Clyde, working with the Central Utah Water Conservancy District (CUWCD), is upgrading a diversion facility at Bridal Veil Falls that allows the collection of water from the mountains above.

The water collected from this area is essential in delivering high-quality, reliable water to residents in Utah County.

In an effort to improve the flow to the Bridal Veil Falls pond, which is directly adjacent to the Provo River Parkway Trail, CUWCD is moving the existing diversion point from the lower plunge pool to allow water to flow freely down the falls to the pond at the base of the falls. From there, the water will be piped under the Provo River and pumped into the Olmsted Flowline through an existing pipeline.

The work provided by WW Clyde consists of furnishing and installing a pump station, including a concrete vault with submersible pumps, a concrete electrical room, a new power supply from across Hwy 189, a precast vault with irrigation meters, approximately 500 ft. of 20-in. and 12-in. pipes, a Provo River crossing with pump out box, conduits and irrigation lines in trenches, a concrete intake box with screen, re-vegetating and restoring surfaces and other work.

WW Clyde recently completed the Central Utah Water Conservancy District (CUWCD) Bridal Veil Falls project, which will be responsible for delivering high-quality, reliable water to residents in Utah County.

On May 2, the CUWCD announced the existing diversion structure has been completed and moved to allow water to flow freely down the falls and into Bridal Veil pond. From there, the water can now be piped through the new pump station and pipeline under the Provo River, into CUWCD’s water system and to homes and businesses across Utah.

through the Salt Lake Valley.

Each interchange included the demolition of existing facilities and construction of drainage, utilities, MSE walls, piling, bridge, asphalt and concrete pavement, signals, lighting and other appurtenances.

The 7000 South interchange also included removal and replacement of a pedestrian bridge over Bangerter Highway.

The significant challenge of this project is the highly accelerated construction schedule.

“These three new interchanges will help people get home from work, take their kids to school or run to the store or the doctor’s office more quickly and safely,” UDOT Executive Director Carlos Braceras said. “Their completion puts us one step closer to realizing our vision of converting Bangerter Highway into a freeway.”

UDOT has now completed 10 interchanges along Bangerter Highway, and in 2021, the Utah legislature allocated more than $600 million toward completing the remaining improvements. Construction is slated to begin next at 4700 South in Taylorsville/West Valley City, 9800 South in South Jordan, 13400 South in Riverton and 2700 West in Riverton/Bluffdale.

Additionally, UDOT plans to begin work on 4100 South in West Valley City to California Avenue in Salt Lake City in 2028. When those are complete and all stoplights are removed from Bangerter Highway, the time it takes to drive from I-15 in Draper to the Salt Lake City International Airport will be reduced by up to 20 minutes, according to UDOT traffic engineers.

“We are experiencing tremendous population growth in our great state, and making Bangerter Highway more like a freeway will reduce traffic delays and improve safety for drivers in western Salt Lake valley for years to come,” Braceras said.

“We’ve assigned a substantial amount of transportation funds to address the rapid growth and traffic we’re seeing in the Salt Lake Valley now and well into the future,” said Senator Wayne Harper. “Completing these three interchanges puts us over the halfway mark to convert Bangerter Highway to a full freeway, and we’re eager to start the next phase.”
