Industry Gathers at UAPA’s Latest Conference, Expo

The Dixie Regional Transportation Expo returned to the Dixie Convention Center in St. George following a pandemic-induced move to a virtual space last year. This year’s expo highlighted future projects along the Interstate 15 corridor through Washington County, as well as local projects spread across St. George, Washington City and other municipalities.

A general theme behind all of the ongoing and future roadwork is the need to provide adequate transportation infrastructure that can handle the region’s increasing traffic demands.

he Utah Asphalt Paving Association (UAPA) held it’s Conference and Expo from Feb. 1 to Feb. 2, 2022, at the Mountain America Expo Center in Sandy, Utah.

The conference and expo welcomed more than 925 attendees from all parts of Utah, Wyoming and Idaho. This is considered the “Premiere Asphalt Event in Utah” and provides the latest information and technology to those involved in the industry. see ASPHALT page 4

Utah Asphalt Paving Association Focuses On Five Key

The conference featured five key topics: • Asphalt Basics • Pavement Preservation • Construction & Engineering • Safety, Aggregates, & Asphalt Production • Industry, Innovation, & Design These five topics were broken down into 28 sessions over the two-day period.

The conference is always well received and some of the feedback that Keri Dumont of UAPA received from attendees included comments by Ben Henderson, director of Duchesne County Road Department.

“I have been involved with Utah Asphalt Pavement Association for ten years,” Dumont said. “I have seen the association grow to what it has become today. I started by going to the first conference and everyone since, I have learned a lot by attending throughout the years. Frankly, I have to give credit where credit is due, it has been a big part of the reason I am where I am today, as the Director of the Duchesne County Road Department.”

Nathan Longhurst, of Cate Equipment said, “It was great to get back together with everyone in person. The supply chain issues continue to be a challenge in the equipment business, but it’s nice to be reminded how fortunate we are to be in business with the great folks in this area.”

The conference closed out with a meeting for Women of Asphalt-Utah. The meeting brought together women across different fields in the asphalt industry, including engineers, paving foreman, business owners, heavy equipment operators, office staff and everything in between.

“Women of Asphalt is a national coalition which supports women in all aspects of the asphalt industry through mentoring, education and advocacy and by encouraging women to seek careers in the asphalt industry,” a statement read on its Facebook page.

UAPA awarded four scholarships to the following: Abdullah Al Mamun, Jerry Street, Kevin Biel and Sarah

Deppe. The event also raised nearly $5,960 from raffle ticket sales for the scholarship fund.

“I-15 is going to see some major renovation in the next couple of years,” said Kevin Kitchen, a spokesman for UDOT’s Region 4. “By that, I mean additional capacity.”

UDOT plans to add a third lane to the roadway in either direction between mile markers 6 and 8 (the Dixie Drive interchange and St. George Boulevard interchange) in St. George and again between mile markers 10 and 13 (the Green Springs interchange and Washington Parkway interchange) in Washington City.

St. George Regional Airport

UDOT plans to engage in road preservation work between Veyo and Central on state Route 18. The work is planned for the summer or fall of 2022.

St. George Regional Airport The St. George Regional Airport is currently rolling out its master plan with an outlook for the next 20 to 30 years. The master plan calls for improvements to the airport terminal and facility overall and identifies various funding avenues that can be used to accomplish those goals.

As with the rest of the projects featured at the transportation expo, improvements to the airport are needed to keep up with the area’s growth, as well as increasing use. 2021 saw a record year for outbound flights at 130,000.

As for future and returning flight destinations, airport manager Richard Stehmeier said flights on American Airlines to DallasFort Worth will return March 27.

“I’ll be going to San Antonio to meet with airlines next week to look at Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, all those other destinations,” Stehmeier said.

While the pandemic is not as grave a con-

cern for the airline industry as it was last year, the big challenge the airlines face now is a shortage of pilots, Stehmeier said.

Around 30% of airline pilots overall took early retirement in the early days of the pandemic, and replacing them hasn’t been easy, he said.

Ivins: Old Highway 91 “The big project coming up this year is the Old Highway 91 project,” said Chuck Gillette, Ivins public works director and city engineer.

Work involves widening and resurfacing a part of the road between 200 East and Kwavasa Drive, as well as intersection improvements along that stretch of road.

This will include the installation for roundabouts at the 400 West and Kwavasa Drive intersections.

In addition to the roadway improvements, a new shared-use trail will run from 200 East to the Ivins Reservoir. 
