Industry Pioneer Earns ‘OutstandingService’ Honor

Ralph L. Wadsworth grew up on a farm in Idaho where he was taught to work hard and not expect anything to be given to him. A gifted boxer, Wadsworth earned a scholarship to the University of Idaho, where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering. He soon discovered how much he really knew.

“I started a civil engineering company,” Wadsworth said.

Construction Crews Wrap Up UDOT’s Top Priority Project Applied Research Associates Inc. (ARA) was part of a team of designers and contractors who recently completed a large, high-priority design/build project on Utah’s Tech Corridor on I-15. The project is located south of Salt Lake City for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT).

The project was ranked as UDOT’s number one priority project for 2018 when construction began due to the very high growth of truck and auto traffic in this area. The $430 million project to widen I-15 in Utah County was designed to improve traffic congestion between Lehi’s Main Street and S.R. 92, known as the Timpanogas Highway.

ARA conducted all of the pavement designs as well as provided technical assistance on several major obstacles that arose during construction. ARA’s contributions involved at least a dozen different designs such as the main line, ramps, cross streets, frontage roads and adjacent highways.

As each company learns from and builds on each other’s strengths, a process of “iron sharpening iron” is taking place on this project. Self-perform crews including concrete, earth work, equipment setting and pipe setting are all a mixture of PCL and Sundt craft professionals, with each side bringing their own unique skills and best practices.

PCL’s expertise will be especially valuable as the team shifts its focus to other important scopes, including a 40-ft.-deep, 7ft.-diameter tunnel that will run nearly 1-mi. long underneath the site. This will be built using micro-tunneling, a trenchless construction method, and will serve as a main artery for incoming wastewater to be processed at the facility.

“PCL has proven experience in tunnel construction,” said Waldron. “No doubt it will be challenging, but I know the team here has the combined ability to get the job done.

So far, I’m really impressed with what we’ve been able to accomplish together — and I think our client is as well.” 

Ralph L. Wadsworth Credits Sons for Business Success WADSWORTH from page 1

While tongue-in-cheek, perhaps, Wadsworth attributes his success to his sons, folks in the industry know it has everything to do with hard work, dedication and ingenuity. That’s why, in January, his peers honored that ethic with the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Utah Eric W. Ryberg award. The award was established in 1960 in honor of Ryberg, the third president of the AGC of Utah. It is presented annually at the AGC’s annual convention to “one person whose outstanding service to the general contracting industry of Utah is exemplary.”

In accepting the award via ZOOM from his home in Scottsdale, Ariz., Wadsworth said, “I really appreciate this award and I am humbled by it. I’d like to accept this award on behalf of all the people who helped me earn it.”

With the help of three of his sons, Guy, Con and Tod, Wadsworth started his construction company in 1975. In doing so, he noted, his sons “turned a weekly allowance into a billable return” as they embarked on their first bridge project, a box culvert in Sandy, Utah.
