Big Creek Construction, Texas Materials Finish U.S. 290 Jobs Big Creek Construction and Texas Materials recently wrapped up two construction projects along U.S. 290 in Lee and Midland counties.

The jobs — part of the overall U.S. 290 East Widening Project — were more than two years in the making when county officials recently celebrated the completion of these projects.

Big Creek Construction installed a grassy median with a cable barrier that now separates the new eastbound lanes

from the westbound lanes along an 8-mi. stretch of U.S. 290 in Lee County. Inside and outside shoulders were also added.

TxDOT funded the $28.3 million project.

Lee County officials joined the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in September to celebrate the completion of the U.S. 290 East widening project that divided a section of the 4-lane highway between the Bastrop/Lee County line to Giddings.

“With thousands more vehicles expected to travel on the

highway each day, we recognized the need to modernize the roadway,” TxDOT Austin District Engineer Tucker Ferguson said. “The completion of this project not only benefits local traffic, but those traveling from Austin to Houston and back.”

Niece Equipment Hosts Groundbreaking for New Facility Despite continuing supply side challenges, Niece Equipment plans to double the size of its fleet of water trucks over the next three years, while adding a major rental and sales facility in the DFW market.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 29 at the site of Niece’s planned new branch office on busy Loop 820 on the north side of Fort Worth.

“The whole state of Texas is hot,” Company President Al Niece said, “but I’ve always wanted to be in DFW just because of the volume of business there.”

The manufacturer, known best for its water and fuel trucks, has corporate offices and a manufacturing plant in Buda, outside of Austin, and a second plant in Fort Scott, Kan. Niece said he started the permit and building process in Fort Worth before the pandemic, but COVID19 and building supply related delays pushed the groundbreaking to September.

Niece maintains a huge rental inventory, because as he said, “when a contractor wants a water truck, they want it now, the same day in most cases.”

Niece also said his company has the largest articulated water truck fleet in Texas, and it’s all about meeting the urgent contractor demands.

Unlike dirt moving equipment which contractors tend to own, Niece said it is very common for those same companies to rent their water supply fleet. “We have customers that have been renting for four or five years continuously,” he said, adding that he’ll upgrade the customer’s truck multiple times during the rental period.

“After 40 years in the industry, we know the water truck business very well,” Niece said. “And we take it very seriously.”

Contractors Begin U.S. 87 Bridge Project in Lubbock TxDOT is set to begin work on a project that will improve safety and mobility along U.S. 87 in southern Lubbock County.

The $21.6 million project will reconstruct the U.S. 87/FM 41 intersection by building a new U.S. 87 bridge, entrance and exit ramps, turn-arounds and adding safety lighting, according to Seve Sisneros, TxDOT’s Brownfield area engineer.

Work on the project began on Oct. 11, with project contractor Allen Butler Construction, of Lubbock, setting barricades and making preparations to begin work to build the frontage road/entrance and exit ramps.

The project’s completion date is scheduled in October 2024.

“U.S. 87 is a major corridor for commerce and travel — connecting the South Plains to the Permian Basin,” Sisneros said. “TxDOT is committed to keep traffic flowing, but U.S. 87 and FM 41 motorists can expect various lane closures, long-term closures, traffic shifts and detours throughout the duration of

the project. Our goal is to make sure we get the work done in the safest and most efficient way possible.

“Drivers should expect to see traffic changes fairly quickly once construction begins, particularly on FM 41. East and westbound FM 41 traffic will not have access to US 87,” Sisneros said. “All FM 41 traffic will be detoured around the work zone. Both U.S. 87 traffic, needing to access FM 41 and FM 41 traffic wanting to connect with U.S. 87, will be detoured at FM 1585 and FM 211 to make those connections.”

The FM 41 detours are expected to be in place until mid-summer 2022.

Additionally, all lanes of traffic on northand southbound U.S. 87, through the active construction zone, will be reduced to 60 mph, Sisneros added.

Drivers are asked to use caution through the work zone, since crews will be working in close proximity to traffic and should keep the following tips in mind. 

One of San Antonio’s busiest corridors is getting a multimillion dollar improvement to help keep pedestrians safe.

In September, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) gave a press conference on the Northwest side with the steps being taken to protect people walking or biking to bus stops on Bandera Road.

This is a $3.6 million dollar investment improving 23 bus stops with new bus pads. The project also includes more sidewalks, hand rails and ramps to help people with mobility issues get around.

The improvements will run from Loop 410 north to Braun Road.

The improvements underway are aimed at protecting thousands of people who aren’t behind the wheel.

TxDOT, VIA and elected officials with the cities of San Antonio and Leon Valley recently made the announcement.

“We are up to 11.3 average daily deaths on our roads in 2021. A big proponent is bike and pedestrian, speeding, distracted driving, and driving while under the influence," said Laura Ryan, commissioner of the Texas Transportation Commission. “One in five deaths on our Texas roadways are pedestrians, which is why TxDOT says projects like this are so important.”

Nearly 300 Customers Attend Vermeer Texas-Louisiana, Bobcat of Lubbock Annual Tailgate

A

pparently folks in Lubbock are ready to get back to post-COVID normal. At least that’s the impression that was left by the nearly 300 customers that showed up as guests of Vermeer Texas-Louisiana and Bobcat of Lubbock at the companies’ annual “tailgate” event held on Oct. 8, the day before home team Texas Tech would take on TCU. It was a diverse group of customers that converged on the co-branded facility at 3415 Slaton Rd. in Lubbock. From landscapers to pipeline companies, from ranchers to municipalities, the group was representitive of the varied industries served by Vermeer and Bobcat in West Texas.

Compact machinery was on display from Bobcat; skid steers, excavators, tractors and even the company’s newest offering — zero turn mowers. On the Vermeer side, chippers, horizontal directional drills and trenchers were the main attraction.

Construction Progressing at Tesla’s Massive Gigafactory To state that Gigafactory Texas is large would be a massive understatement. Built using what appears to be a new building strategy from the company, Giga Texas does not seem to be getting constructed in stages like Giga Nevada, Gigafactory Shanghai, and Giga Berlin. This makes a lot of difference when someone does a drive-by of the Giga Texas site in Austin.

With Giga Texas’ exterior walls and windows now being laid, it is becoming even easier to comprehend just how massive the facility really is. Elon Musk has stated that Giga Texas would be “almost a mile long” when completed, and he also noted that the facility would be roughly seven stories tall with every floor being “double in size.” This should make Gigafactory Texas one of the world’s largest vehicle factories by sheer footprint.

Estimates point to Gigafactory Texas being a 4 to 5 million-sq.-ft. facility when it’s completed. For perspective, the Fremont Factory, which currently produces the Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y, covers about 510,000 sq. ft. of space. 

Central area steel work and footings are approximately 95 percent complete.
