Rubble Master Showcases RM 120X Impact Mobile Crusher Rubble Master showcased the latest RM 120X mobile impact crusher to Texas contractors and aggregate producers during its Demo Day June 10 and 11.

Over the course of two days, Rubble Master welcomed more than 100 visitors to see the brand-new RM 120X mobile impact crusher firsthand.

According to Jackson McAdam, managing director of Rubble Master Americas Corp, “This was a great opportunity to show local contractors our full product offering and support capabilities in the Texas market. We are immensely proud of our new North American headquarters in Ennis, Texas, offering sales, service and rental to Texas clients. Within 12 months we have grown from a relatively small team to a 15 strong support team.”

Besides the new flagship crusher, attendees also could see the RM HS5000M 5-ft. by 12-ft. scalping screen and the RM MTS2412S 80-ft. tracked conveyor.

Despite all odds and travel restrictions, Gerald Hanisch, owner and president of Rubble Master, made it to the event to talk to clients about the latest innovations.

“The Demo Days have proven that the Texas market needs a new offering,” said Hanisch.

Trophy Tractor to Open Newest Facility in Burleson Trophy Tractor recently broke ground on what will be a 28,000-sq.-ft. facility on 13 acres in Burleson, Texas.

Demand for Trophy’s huge rental fleet of earthmoving and mining equipment has grown exponentially over the past few years resulting in the need for the upgraded facility, according to Jeff Miller, the company’s president.

Tarrant Construction Services of Fort Worth will act as general contractor of the project.

Trophy opened in 2010 after the successful asset purchase of Miller’s former employer. Trophy has been selling and renting used equipment since then from its current yard in Grand Prairie.

Miller said his company maintains a fleet of approximately 200 machines at a value of $25 million to $30 million.

The new building will have a total of eight service bays, each with 22-ft. by 22-ft. access doors, a 5,000-sq.-ft. office and a parts storage building. “The goal,” according to Miller, “is to be able to handle an even larger inventory of equipment and do so more efficiently, resulting in even less downtime for our customers.”

The facility’s climate controlled shop area is designed to attract top service talent, Miller said.

“Mechanics want to work in 70 degree temperatures, not 105,” he said, adding that he knows of only one other climate controlled shop in the DFW area.

departments also will add one person each, along with a rental coordinator and additional office staff.

The land and buildings represent a $6 million investment for Trophy.

Miller attributes his company’s growth to its’ willingness to stand behind the equipment it rents and sells. “We have built a reputation over the years and buyers know we’ll make it right when necessary. As our motto states, ‘Dependability, Truth, Integrity. PERIOD.’” Trophy’s fleet consists of 95 percent Cat equipment, along

with one of the largest Klein water equipment fleets in the country. The vast majority of the fleet is less than threeyears-old.

Miller is bullish on the future of construction in Texas and said “we are going to be here for the long run.”

Nadine Mireles: Skanska Sometimes it’s the littlest of things that make the biggest impact.

Such was the case when a giant in the construction industry gave away T-shirts to students at a San Antonio trade school in 2010.

Nadine Mireles was a 15year-old freshman at Construction Careers Academy (CCA) when Skanska made a presentation to her class and gave each student a T-shirt with the company logo.

“I knew right then that I wanted to work for Skanska. I honestly believe that shirt is the reason I’m at Skanska now,” said Mireles, who is the assistant project manager in charge of special projects for the company.

Of course, Mireles would not have the shirt had she not opted to attend a trade school specializing in her field of choice.

“I recommend the trade school route for anyone who wants to enter the industry,” Mireles said. “My first few years at Texas A&M felt like review from my trade school classes. I was ahead of the game.”

After Construction Careers Academy and A&M, where she earned her degree in Construction Science, Mireles interned at Skanska before landing a full-time job.

“From the get-go, especially after meeting the people, I knew this company must have done something right,” she said. “As an intern, I became aware of their core values. I learned that they take care of their people, and just as importantly, their customers. I learned how technologically advanced they are as a company. They are true innovators, and I wanted to be a part of it.”

“One challenge was being so young when I started,” she said. “I was a 20-yearold trying to manage men that had done this forever. I questioned myself a little. What could I possibly add or teach?

I learned how important advanced research was and that allowed me to know what I was doing on the project.”

Mireles is primarily responsible for small scale Skanska projects at the San Antonio regional office. Institutional renovations like the one made necessary at St. Phillip’s College following the ice storm of 2021 are typically assigned to her. She also manages many of Skanska’s inhouse projects.

Still in her 20s, we asked Mireles where she wanted to be in the industry in five years.

“I’m going to park it here at Skanska,” she replied. “This is my dream job. This is something that I love. I’ve never had a day when I wake up and do not want to go to work.”

To other women thinking Nadine Mireles that construction might give Skanska them a similar sense of pride and satisfaction, Mireles offers, “Do it. There are so many more women making it in the industry today.

Get out there. Try it out. Go to a trade school. If I can be successful at it, so can you. Do not be afraid. I’m a living testament that you can do it. And if you are older, this is your time. Go for it.”

Twelve years after a T-shirt ignited a young girl’s interest in a company and a career, she is still exhilarated by the industry.

“Every day is like a highlight film,” she said.

Women as Influencers Women have been instrumental in her career journey, Mireles said, dating all the way back to her days

at CCA. “The people teaching me in high school were women,” Mireles stated. “They were estimators prior to being educators, so they knew the business. From the very beginning, I knew that women could be an important part of the construction industry.”

Today, Mireles is giving back through the Architecture, Construction and Engineering (ACE) mentoring program at Skanska.

“Since I’m on the younger side, I frequently work with the younger age group, since it is easy to relate to them,” she said. “Most of my mentees are young

“It takes a lot of courage and guts to start a new construction enterprise today,” Closner said. “I really respect the guys that are going out on their own.”

Closner remembered the early discussions he had with Fouts that ultimately lead to a working relationship.

“We met at an industry event,” said Closner. “He was working for another contractor at the time. He talked about his experience working for several paving companies and said he wanted to go on his own.

Ritchie Bros. to Host Largest Auction for Barrilleaux Inc. From Aug. 10 to 11, Ritchie Bros. will conduct its largest-ever, single-owner auction for Barrilleaux Inc., an oilfield pipeline construction company based in Texas (and one location in New Mexico). Transportation Commission Approves Largest Ever Funds With help from federal COVID-19 relief funding, the Texas Transportation Commission has approved $89 million in transit funding. It’s the largest amount of funding at one time for transit agencies across the state. This funding supports equitable, reliable transit services that are an essential part of life for many people across Texas.

These funds support rural and urban transit services in more than 96 percent of the state’s land area, serving 41 percent of the state’s population.

TxDOT Names Hendrickson Deputy Executive Director The Texas Department of Transportation recently announced the selection of Brandye Hendrickson as the department’s new deputy executive director. She is filling the position vacated by Marc Williams, who became TxDOT executive director on June 1. Hendrickson, who has extensive transportation experience on the state and national levels, is currently deputy director of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

She begins her new role at TxDOT July 19.

Hendrickson served much of her career in various roles within the Indiana Department of Transportation, including leading the agency as commissioner in a CEO capacity from 2015 to 2017. She successfully championed efforts to streamline and improve the delivery of transportation projects, fostered collaboration and promoted innovation.

As deputy director of AASHTO, Hendrickson most recently worked on critical legislative initiatives that included COVID relief funding for state DOTs and key legislative efforts for transportation funding. She led development efforts for AASHTO’s Strategic Plan and increased focus for the organization’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

“We are thrilled to have Brandye join the TxDOT family in this important role,” said Williams. “Her demonstrated experience in the areas of operations, policy, people and project funding are going to help us take TxDOT to a new level

Bruce Bugg Jr., chairman of the Texas Transportation Commission.

“There are many conversations in Washington around the need for continued road and bridge investment and related infrastructure improvements. Whole Drilling Solutions Mike Phinnemore is not new to the drilling business in North Texas, but his latest venture is. Whole Drilling Solutions LLC was formed recently with the intent of offering alternative drilling and stabilization techniques to the DFW metroplex.

Phinnemore’s company offers auger cast piling, used primarily when installing piles in soft material. The process allows for a variety of bored piles through differing soil

conditions and in a various diameters.

Concrete is pumped through the auger as it is withdrawn from the ground, eliminating the need for shoring.

Phinnemore said the process is preferred for schools and other light duty structures. It requires a concrete pump like the Putzmeister TK60 supplied by Closner.

For the drilling pro and his fledgling company, he said they need the unmatched support and training that Closner offers.

“Closner handles all of our operator training,” he said. “We’ve worked with them since 2015 at Russo [his former company].

Whole Drilling Solutions chose Closner and the Putzmeister TK60 concrete/shotcrete pump for one of its first jobs, concrete piers for the new Weatherford Department of Safety building.

‘It Feels Good’ There is more to filling the needs of promising new contractors than finding a way to get them the equipment they need and training them on the machines’ operation.

“There is always a sense of urgency,” said Closner.

Fouts has experienced his share of emergencies.

“A lot of our work is for TxDOT and has to be performed at night when traffic is light,” he said. “We can be assessed a penalty of up to $10,000 an hour if we are not off the roads at the agreed upon time. A penalty

like that made for one of the worst days of my life when FoutsCo was in its infancy.

“That’s why we have to lean on our equipment partner so hard,” he continued. “If I need Closner at 2 a.m. in order to get off the highway on schedule, they are there.”

For J.B. Closner, the former center for the University of Alabama football team, urgency in the construction world reminds him of the two minute drill in the closing seconds of a football game.

“It feels good,” said Closner. “It is satisfying when someone is in a bind and you can help them. Whether it is getting them the equipment, or getting the equipment back up and running. That to me is the fulfilling side of what we do. Everyone wins.”  CEG

Yoder & Frey has added another industry “big hitter” to its team as the company announced that David Hames comes on board as the Texas territory manager, as well as other bordering states.

Hames brings a great deal of experience to the company, having worked as a specialist in the OEM sector, as well as being an auctioneer of 20 years standing, running state auctions, liquidation sales and car auctions.

Hames has spent his entire life in the heavy machinery sector. With his family in ranching and farming, Hames has been around machinery and equipment from an early age. He also spent time working as a mechanic on Cat equipment during his college years.

During the last 11 years, Hames ran his own Kubota dealership, Bar-H Equipment Services, in Dalhart, Texas, which he built from the ground up, and then rebuilt following a devastating fire. Hames also ran his own contracting business in the utility and site work sector. For the rest of his professional life, Hames worked directly with OEMs, with a spell at RDO Equipment selling John Deere, plus managing two Case dealerships, providing him with a wellrounded machinery background, working across the entire industry.

When Hames sold his Kubota dealership and was considering his next move in the industry, it was at that point that he was recruited to join Yoder & Frey.

“I’ve known of Yoder & Frey for more than 30 years, by visiting the Kissimmee winter sales and, of course, by reputation in the market place,” Hames said. “With a solid reputation, with good character and being a name one could trust, when I was
