DPR Construction is striving hard to complete the Trammell Crow Company (TCC) and MSD Capital’s 35-Story Class A Office Tower in downtown Austin, known by its address, 601 W. 2nd Street.

The 814,081-sq.-ft. Class A building is 590 ft. tall and upon completion, will be Austin’s largest and tallest office tower. Substantial construction is expected to be complete by May 2022.

Work began in January 2019.

“The project represents the largest vertical high-rise concrete structure that DPR has ever built including its largest

self-perform concrete project to date,” said Jacob Skrobarczyk, DPR’s virtual design & construction (VDC) lead.

Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects and STG Design served as the architects for the project. The tower, situated on a 1.26acre site, features an iconic curved facade that gracefully emulates a sail.

One key hurdle has been preventing water intrusion from the adjacent lake and creek all while working in busy downtown Austin. The team’s solution – constructing a massive six-level, 70feet-deep diaphragm wall – was a complex endeavor itself.

Women in Construction: Skanska’s Monica Martinez No two journeys are the same. Different starting points; different destinations. And almost certainly, different obstacles along the way.

For Monica Martinez, her journey in the construction world started in Mexico. It has led her to a promising career at Skanska, but her final destination is most certainly yet to be determined.

While Martinez said she is now “living her dream,” getting to this point has not always been easy.

“I don’t want people to think that it is not challenging,” Martinez said of assimilating in the world of construction.

“Being a Hispanic woman in the construction world is a challenge. The majority of the workforce is male, but I believe that being a woman in this industry is actually beneficial.”

As an assistant project manager of Skanska, Martinez is going through her pregnancy journey while working on a construction project and she encourages other women planning to start a family to continue to work in construction.

“My project team and our San Antonio office have been very supportive throughout my pregnancy. It is an exciting time and sometimes it can be overwhelming but Skanska has the resources to guide me through every step and to plan my parental leave and return-to-work".

“There are a lot of benefits of women pursuit a career in construction. You are always on the move – always looking for solutions…always challenging yourself. Walking next to a building and knowing that you were a part of its construction process is so fulfilling. People are living and working in buildings that you’ve constructed. That’s an amazing feeling.”

The trek from childhood in Mexico to a promising career with Skanska in San Antonio had the potential to be fraught with challenges – both figuratively and literally, but the young Assistant Project Manager viewed it as a pathway toward an eventual goal.

Martinez was always around construction in her early years. Her dad is a builder and her siblings have careers in Civil Engineering, Architecture and design and she never dreamed of being anything but being a Construction Manager and Architect in the commercial sector. She also is working on starting to build a house on the side as investment. After starting her degree in Architecture from Universidad de Monterrey and wanting to leave home to continue her education in Architecture and Construction Science and Management in the United States, Martinez landed an internship at Skanska in 2017.

The following year she was brought on full time and has been “living that dream,” ever since.

Finding a Niche “As an Assistant Project Manager,” Martinez said “every day is different. I’m responsible for many financial aspects of a job. Contract management, supervision of Project Engineers and Interns, change order negotiation, project status and financial reports, material procurement tracking, document control, cost management and meetings, lots of meetings.

“Women are good at assessing the risk to reward ratio as well as possessing good time management in most cases,” she said.

But one aspect of her job is likely to be a major focus going forward. see MARTINEZ page 20

TxDOT Reaches Decision On Houston Infrastructure Project

Officials of the Texas Department of Transportation recently announced the approval of a preferred alternative for a crucial project to improve safety and mobility along one of the state’s most congested roadways, as described in the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project.

The NHHIP will include roadway improvements to add four managed express (MaX) lanes on I-45 from Downtown Houston to Beltway 8 North, reroute I-45 to be parallel with I-10 on the north side of Downtown Houston and parallel to US 59/I-69 on the east side of Downtown Houston, realign sections of I-10 and I-69 in the Downtown area to eliminate the current roadway reverse curves that limit capacity, and depress I-69 between I-10 and Spur 527 south of Downtown to improve safety by eliminating unsafe weaving. 

Student Creates VR Simpson Strong-Tie, University of Texas Simulator to Help Partner to Test, Supply New Technology Protect Workers Pavement Reinforcement...

Simpson Strong-Tie, a leader in engineered structural connectors and building solutions, announced the development and launch of a category of pavement reinforcement technologies designed to improve the sustainability, longevity and resiliency of asphalt-paved road surfaces in North America.

In partnership with the University of Texas at Arlington, Simpson StrongTie is developing a series of road tests at the Advanced Pavement Research Center to demonstrate the value of using pavement reinforcement grids in conjunction with the repaving of America’s roadways.

More than 173,000 mi. of U.S. highways and major roads and an additional 45,000 bridges are currently in poor condition. The $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act includes $550 billion in new funding for roads, bridges, water resources, and climate change mitigation and specifically provides $110 billion to repair the nation’s aging highways, bridges and roads.

As Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funds are deployed to help bring American roadways into the 21st century, additional roadbed technologies are likely to be introduced, including high adhesion surfaces, sound proofing, sensors for self-driving vehicles and systems for improved safety in extreme weather conditions.

“Whatever type of asphalt is installed, it will remain at the mercy of weather and the constant wear and tear of traffic loads unless it’s also reinforced to avoid cracking, crazing and deformation,” said Simpson Strong-Tie market segment manager Corey Clark.

A Texas A&M doctoral candidate has created a virtual reality simulator designed to help construction workers stay safe on the job.

Construction science PhD student Nam Kim said more than 100 workers are killed in road work zones every year, but research has found that workers who have already experienced a workplace accident or injury are more sensitive to the hazards surrounding them.

Often times, the alarm beeps and rings on construction vehicles are functional when these workers suffer an accident on the job, Kim said.

“We found that our sensory organs and neuroactivities in our brains are designed so that if there are warning alarms that are constantly ringing around them, they stop paying attention and just focus on their task,” Kim said. “That’s one of the phenomenon that cause workers’ inattentive behavior at hazardous work places.”

That’s why Kim’s simulator has a worker perform a simple road cleaning task around moving construction vehicles so they can experience the consequences of their unsafe behaviors.

“During that time, many construction vehicles continuously move around the worker,” Kim said. “Using eye-tracking sensors, we measure how they respond to the approaching vehicles. If they continuously ignore the approaching construction vehicles, we trigger the accident and make them experience it.”

Kim said the goal is to understand more about how this virtual experience and the warning alarms affects the worker’s sensory responses. That’s why Kim and his team also measured the brain activity of those who used the simulator.

“After experiencing our VR environment, workers’ sensory response to warning alarms significantly increased,” Kim said. “It means that experiencing this VR safety training model influenced their sensory response to warning alarms.”

Kim said a large construction company in Houston used his simulator on 35 of its workers and it was so satisfied with the results that management wants to use it for all their employees. He also says further research now is being funded by the National Science Foundation with a $750,000 grant.

The virtual safety training Kim designed also is primed for the pandemic world.

“To be honest, I didn’t design this safety training for this pandemic period,” Kim said. “However, I found that usually the conventional safety training, all workers gathered in a classroom to take the class from the instructor. But with this VR safety training, we don’t need to do that. That will prevent an infection from spreading by many people gathering.”

Kim’s presentation of this research also earned first place at the university’s Three Minute Thesis competition in November, beating out nine other finalists.

Kim worked in the construction industry before enrolling at Texas A&M and joining the construction sciences department. He said seeing workers become disabled as the result of tragic accidents on the job motivated his research on construction safety. 

“The wall is socketed 10 feet below the mat foundation and encompasses the entire perimeter of the building serving as the below grade foundation wall,” she added. “Its construction allowed crews to avoid water intrusion issues during the below grade work.”

Several Firms Will Be Busy Rebuilding Highways in Spring Limits: From Loop 281 to Fisher Road.

Anticipated completion date: March 2023 This project consists of widening a twolane road to four lanes with a center turn lane. This includes drainage structures, flexible base, curb and gutter, sidewalks, hot mix and pavement markings. Contractor will be extending culverts and constructing detours.

A number of general contractors will be starting projects this spring or will continue with improvements to several highway projects throughout Texas.

Project consists of widening for a Super 2, including subgrade work, surface treatment, base and surface hot mix asphalt, widening structures, bridge rail, MBGF, signage and permanent striping.

Cherokee County FM 22 Safety Widening and Bridge Replacement Project Contractor: Stateline Construction LLC Cost: $5.5 million Limits: From CR 1512 west of Gallatin, east to SH 110 Anticipated completion date: Summer 2022 The contractor is scheduled to continue corrective work and construction on the bridge at Little Turnpike Creek. The bridge will be closed during construction. The project will widen the existing roadway, replace three bridges and incorporate safety upgrades.

U.S. 84 Widening Contractor: Madden Contracting Company LLC Cost: $7.9 million Limits: From 0.43 mi. east of SH 110 in Rusk, northeast to the Rusk County line in Reklaw Anticipated completion date: Summer 2022 The contractor is scheduled to begin base repairs and continue widening cross structures and driveway upgrades. The contractor also plans to begin widening the travel lanes.

The project will widen and resurface the roadway, along with adding safety upgrades.

SH 204 Super-2 Widening Project Contractor: Madden Contracting Company LLC Cost: $13.7 million Limits: From U.S. 79 in Jacksonville southeast to SH 110 Anticipated completion date: Summer 2022

Henderson County

Many construction companies will be out on Texas highways performing upgrades in various counties throughout the state.

The contractor is scheduled to place rock rip rap and fill drop-offs along pavement edges. Lane closures will be in place during construction. The project adds passing lanes and incorporates safety upgrades.

Helmcamp Cost: $6.0 million Limits: Houston County Line east to U.S. 69 in Alto Anticipated completion date: Fall 2022 The contractor is scheduled to continue road work construction on driveway upgrades and structure extensions. Lane closures are anticipated during construction.

The project will consist of pavement resurfacing.

Gregg County FM 2206/Harrison Road Contractor: East Texas Bridge Inc. Cost: $15.16 million

SH 198 Bridge Project Contractor: Copasa Inc. Cost: $30.4 million Limits: At the Clear Creek Bridge, 1 mi. north of FM 3054 to 0.1 mi. north of CR 2830 Anticipated completion date: Fall 2023 The contractor is scheduled to work on the new northbound bridge and roadway elements. The project consists of the construction of replacing bridges, approaches, grading, structures, asphalt concrete pavement (ACP) base, ACP surface, retaining walls, curb & gutter, MBGF and pavement markings.

Smith County FM 2493 Widening Project Contractor: Highway 19 Construction LLC Cost: $14.5 million Limits: From FM 2813 in Gresham south to FM 346 in Flint Anticipated completion date: Spring 2022 The contractor is scheduled for punch list items. The project will widen FM 2493 from two lanes to a four-lane divided roadway with a flush median.

The work includes bridge rehabilitation, highway paving, road widening, striping, extending culverts and much more.

SH 19 Super Two Widening & Overlay Contractor: Big Creek Construction LTD. Cost: $12.1 million Limits: SH 243 (Canton) S 13 mi. to Henderson County line Anticipated completion date: December 2023 Crews will be performing roadway widening operations on the southbound side and extending drainage structures on the northbound side. Traffic control will consist of a southbound shoulder closure and will be managed by flaggers as needed. The project consists of Super 2 work including grading, base repair, treated subgrade, flex base, OCST, PFC surface, structures, signs and pavement markings. 

Finding solutions for those challenges was crucial to meeting benchmarks.

“A VDC-enabled workforce, from our SPW teams to project engineers to superintendents, has incorporated a high level of building information modeling into virtually every aspect of the project,” said Wilson.

“This includes detailed modeling to coordinate and construct the exterior curtainwall to the skilled, best-in-class SPW concrete team using VDC and 4-D scheduling to plan and execute what is arguably the most complex and single biggest self-perform concrete project we had undertaken.”

Employing a diaphragm wall to de-risk the site was another unique solution DPR brought to the table, which differentiated this project from neighboring projects that encountered similar water intrusion issues using more traditional approaches.

“We drew on our national resources and expertise from other regions to successfully complete the wall,” said Wilson, who stressed the team effort aspect of the construction.

“Building a high-performing team from the start that is focused on meeting the owner’s expectations for schedule, quality and cost has been a fundamental solution on this project,” she said. “That has included leveraging DPR’s SPW concrete crews and self-perform teams that successfully delivered other local Austin projects, including Third and Shoal and the Marriott Austin projects.”

Mark Fowler, TCC’s senior vice president, appreciated the team approach.

The project represents the largest vertical high-rise concrete structure that DPR has ever built including its largest self-perform concrete project to date.

“It’s been a pleasure really just working with DPR and their attitude day-to-day – it’s all about the team and the people,” he said.

“To take a project and not put it out to the market, and just sole source it to a company, the biggest project you’ve ever done, it says a lot about their ability and the comfort level that I have with them.”

Project Planning Planning for the construction began one year before crews arrived on-site. The tower was topped out last July, with the crown structure cantilevering 93 ft. above the roof.

After starting her degree in Architecture from Universidad de Monterrey and wanting to leave home to continue her education in Architecture and Construction Science and Management in the United States., Martinez landed an internship at Skanska in 2017.

Martinez is an FAA certified drone pilot and is using that skill to train other drone pilots at Skanska. That competency has proven to be a valuable asset to Skanska, who Martinez said has been very supportive of her interest in cutting edge construction solutions.

“I’ve been a huge advocate for technology since I’ve been at Skanska,” she said, “and I really believe the sky is the limit for technology in construction.

“Skanska is constantly looking for emerging technologies to be used across multiple departments, and we have an internal network within the company where I can communicate with other Skanska folks to exchange ideas on different technology uses,” she added.

has been trained and certified in infrared technology and she has gained knowledge and experience in 360-degree cameras, laser scanning, BIM coordination (“Building Information Modeling”), virtual, augmented and mixed reality, and other applications in order to gather up-to-date information through data collection to improve processes and the company operational strategy.

Women in Construction A conversation with Martinez revealed two passions. She is clearly passionate about her career and construction in general, but she may be even more zealous about the future of women in her chosen profession.

“There is a need for women in construction,” she emphasized. “We need to have more women among our leaders and Skanska is working on taking measures to increase the number of women in construc-

tion by offering resources and encourage them to look beyond challenges.”

Ever since joining Skanska, Martinez has noticed an exponential growth in women joining construction. All of the Skanska’s San Antonio projects has at least one woman working on their project teams, which used to be rare in the industry.

She offered some advice for young women that may be putting aside their interest in construction in favor of more traditional career tracks.

“Don’t worry about what other people want for you,” she said. “Fulfill yourself as a person and the rest will work out. Attach yourself to the right people. Sponsors are very important. I’ve had several at Skanska, some of whom ended up nominating me for positions in leadership. We need leaders to invite other women to the industry, and them bringing more to the table.”  CEG

Houston’s $1B Fix Zachry Construction, Traylor Brothers Inc. to Correct Tollway Bridge

After an independent review, Harris County officials are adding nearly $300 million more to the Ship Channel Bridge along the Sam Houston Tollway, including $50 million to demolish what had been built as part of a “faulty design.”

Nearly two years after work on a massive new bridge stopped due to public-safety concerns, crews are at it again, and this time it’s going to cost much more.

The Ship Channel Bridge along the Sam Houston Tollway will cost Harris County nearly $300 million more, including $50 million to demolish what had been built as part of a “faulty design,” according to county officials. The changes also will add three years to the project’s original timeline.

What happened? According to Robert Treviño, executive director of Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA), the county hired an engineering consultant to conduct an independent review of the previous Engineer of Record design of the main span portion of the bridge.

“This review identified significant concern for overstressed concrete,” Trevino said. “Any risk to public safety posed by the original design is unacceptable.”

With that in mind, the new design will be composed of a

welded steel substructure with the road built on top of it, a much more common industrywide approach as opposed to the original pre-cast concrete substructure. Standard equipment will be used in the construction of the cable-stayed bridge with the plan also calling for the demolition of some parts of the incomplete 514-ft.-tall bridge tow-

ers purposed to carry the weight of the span, as well as the rebuilding of these towers with additional steel reinforcement.

“We had to make a decision to go with function over form,” Treviño said during a review of the new plan with the Houston Chronicle.

Work by the original contractors: San Antonio-based Zachry Construction and Traylor Brothers Inc., a national bridge firm with headquarters in Evansville, Ind., will be completed in early 2028.

The increased price tag makes this job the county’s costliest single public works project.

The project’s $1.3-billion price tag — $300 million more than the original projection — makes it the county’s costliest single public works project.

As for project funding, the HCTRA relies on charges from users of the toll road system. If toll collections return to normal as expected, then HCTRA will have the capability of paying the extra costs, many of which will not come due until 2025 or 2026, Treviño explained.

The Harris County Commissioners court unanimously approved the new design and project redo.

Commissioner Adria Garcia said he didn’t want to be “turning over in my grave, knowing that we didn’t do something to address safety.”

Meanwhile, Commissioner Tom Ramsey credited toll officials for addressing and then redesigning the bridge. “These changes are huge,” he said.

“The sooner we can get this done, the safer it will be for the public,” concluded Commissioner Jack Cagle.  CEG
