In one of the most competitive construction markets in the country, one contractor has separated itself from many of its competitors by way of diversification.

TCH Directional Drilling of Friendswood, Texas, has seen improbable growth over the last

decade under the leadership of Colby Ellis, a second-generation contractor who saw potential in the directional drilling business.

When Ellis joined his father Scott’s company straight out of high school in 2004, TCH was primarily involved in telecommu-

nications cable and innerduct installation for AT&T and at NASA facilities around Houston.

TCH Directional Drilling Leans On Vermeer for Projects DRILLING from page 1

But his vision for the company extended beyond telecom projects.

“I always had the desire to be in the pipeline business,” Ellis said, which led him to the decision to purchase the company’s first mid-size directional drill in 2008. “I saw so much potential for growth if we were able to diversify away from just cable work.”

Houston, after all, was the epicenter of the pipeline industry in Texas, and horizontal directional drilling was becoming the preferred method of laying pipe in congested metro areas. It was widely accepted that in those areas open trenching was too risky and time consuming.

Game Changer While Ellis learned and worked to build TCH’s directional drilling business, he was confronted with a challenge on the equipment side of the enterprise.

“We were getting jobs around the state,” Ellis said, “but working with a different dealer for service and parts, depending on where we were, was problematic for us. There was no consistency on parts and service availability, and it was difficult to build relationships as we dealt with a different dealer in each part of the state.”

By 2010, the company had several drills, but did not feel it had the “partner” it needed in an equipment supplier.

In 2010, at about the time Ellis assumed more control of the business from his father, the decision was made to buy a Vermeer D24x40 drill, followed closely by the purchase of a D20x22, also from Vermeer. Both drills were built for congested urban job sites like those confronted by TCH in Houston, and were appropriate for small-diameter pipe work, but also for the cable jobs that still made up a large part of its business.

TCH’s business is made up of approximately 40 percent pipeline work and 40 percent commercial projects, like the Amazon distribution center job it recently completed in the Houston suburb of Richmond.

“That was huge for us,” Ellis commented.

“Vermeer has 13 branches to draw parts and service from. We work all over the state and

there is always a Vermeer branch nearby.”

As the months and years went by, Ellis grew more confident in the Vermeer product and the dealer’s service.

“The functionality of Vermeer’s different size rigs is so similar that very little retraining is needed,” Ellis said of the product line.

“And their service is amazing. If we need

them on a Sunday morning, or whenever, they are there.”

Having found the equipment teammate it was looking for, TCH stepped up to mid-size Vermeer drills with the purchase of a D100x120 in 2012 and its first D100x140 the following year. see DRILLING page 10

TxDOT Praises Contractors for Emergency Response

The snowstorms and cold weather that gripped Texas in February was not easy for the state, but the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), along with contractors and subcontractors, worked overtime to keep the roads safe and protect motorists.

Ryan LaFontaine, part of the TxDOT media relations team, described the situation that faced the Lone Star State and how it impacted road and bridge construction projects.

“Parts of Texas saw record snowfall the week of February 15 as some areas got five to eight inches of snow,” he said. “Even parts of the Gulf Coast saw snow. Several parts of Texas saw their coldest temperatures in more than 30 years. Due to power outages, some TxDOT locations operated on backup generators. Work was temporarily halted on many construction projects across the state. ” LaFontaine noted that the delays would not seriously impact project benchmarks and delivery schedules.

“Our construction schedules include allowances for weather impacts, so there should be no significant effects on the project schedules,” he said.

The agency appreciated the help provide by general contractors and subcontractors in this emergency situation.

“Contractors assisted TxDOT throughout this winter weather event,” said LaFontaine.

“Their efforts have helped in numerous ways and it underscores the great working relationships TxDOT has with our contractors.”

Kal Kincaid, president of the Associated General Contractors of Texas and president of Gulf Coast Construction Company, stressed the gravity of the unexpected and unusual cold weather.

“The February winter storm was historic in nature as it produced weather advisories for all 254 Texas counties,” he said. “Most Texas communities lack the resources to deal with large snow accumulations, ice and sustained periods of sub-freezing tempera-

tures. These conditions caused extreme hazards on our roads, highways and bridges.

The Texas Department of Transportation, as it routinely does in extreme weather events, reached out to the Texas highway contractors for help.”

Nor did TxDOT have to wait long for a positive response from the general contracting community.

“Highway contractors and their crews quickly answered the call,” said Kincaid.

“We supplied approximately 500 pieces of equipment and crews that, in most cases, worked around the clock to help TxDOT clear ice and snow from our highways and bridges. We have a strong working relationship with TxDOT and remain grateful that we can assistant anytime when called to ensure that our roads and bridges remain open and safe for the traveling public during bad weather. We remain focused on helping deliver a safe and efficient system 365 days of the year.”

“He had to climb into a motor grader to help clear ice and snow from Texas roads when one of his equipment operators encountered a situation that prevented him from answering the call,” said Gary Scharrer, Associated General Contractors of Texas.

TCH’s partnership with Vermeer goes beyond equipment, though, according to Ellis. Mark Foulon, a regional manager of Vermeer Texas-Louisiana, has become a valuable asset to TCH. “We can call Mark whenever,” Ellis said.

“What makes him so valuable though is that he knows all aspects of the business. He started in the parts department at Vermeer and that really helps him on the sales end. He really knows the equipment and makes a point of understanding our needs.”

Growth Spurt By 2015, TCH employed about 75 people and was positioned for growth after huge investments in both people and machines.

“I have always strived for steady, sustainable growth,” Ellis said, “but we really began to hit on all cylinders in 2015. It was the diversification that put us in that position.”

He was quick to point out though, that “from the equipment standpoint, I’m most invested in pipeline work.”

New Digs The five-year growth spurt that began in 2015 resulted in the company outgrowing both its offices and its yard.

“For a while we added trailers for additional office space, but we eventually outgrew those too,” Ellis said.

Its new space in Friendswood, on the south side of Houston, more resembles offices of an engineering firm than a drilling contractor.

“Our new facility is all about operations,”

Lone Star State Construction Projects Austin markings.

U.S. 79: I-35 to East of FM 1460 TxDOT's Austin district is proposing improvements to the U.S. 79 Project, from I-35 to east of FM 1460 (A.W. Grimes) in the city of Round Rock, Williamson County, Texas.

The purpose of the project is to improve safety and mobility and accommodate future population growth and land use development in the area. The proposed project includes the following improvements: • Widening the existing U.S. 79 roadway to add a third travel lane in each direction; • Installing a raised median for safety; • Constructing an underpass at the intersection of U.S. 79 and Mays Street, an overpass at the intersection of U.S. 79 and FM 1460 and altering the U.S. 79/I-35 intersection; • Modifying driveways and access points to improve safety and traffic flow; • Installing shared-use paths on both sides of U.S. 79 to provide improved pedestrian and bicycle accommodations.

SH 21: CR 130 to Paint Creek Road TxDOT is developing preliminary plans to expand SH 21 from County Road (CR) 130 to Paint Creek Road in Bastrop County, Texas. SH 21 in eastern Bastrop County functions as both a local thoroughfare and commuter highway. Along the project limits, the existing highway is an undivided highway with alternate passing lanes and includes areas where the roadway is reduced to two lanes southbound and one lane northbound. The preliminary plans would expand the roadway from a four-lane undivided to a fourlane divided. Bastrop County’s rapid growth has increased the need for accommodating projected traffic volumes, improving safety and reducing congestion.

Proposed improvements include: • Widening the roadway to create a four-lane divided roadway (two lanes in each direction); • Separating travel lanes by adding a median with crossovers at regular intervals; • Designing the roadway to include 12-ft. lanes, 10-ft. outside shoulders and a 4-ft. inside shoulder; • Constructing two new twin bridges over U.S. 290 along a new alignment.

Irving Interchange The $301 million Irving Interchange project will include the reconstruction of interchanges at SH 183, SH 114, Loop 12 and Spur 482. Loop 12 will be reconstructed and widened from six to eight lanes for a length of 1.2 mi. that begins on the south end of Union Bower Road to the north of Texas Plaza Drive. The project will also include the widening of SH 114 from Loop 12 to SH 183 and Spur 482 with direct connectors. Spur 482 will be reconstructed from west of Century Center Boulevard to the interchange and will tie into SH 183 with direct connectors.

This is a Texas Clear Lanes project.

The overall length of the project is about 9.6 mi. including bridges and direct connectors.

Current construction avtivities include: • Several bridges over Loop 12, SH 183 and Spur 482 are currently under construction; • Detour pavement and excavation/embankment construction is ongoing along Loop 12; • Retaining wall construction continues along SH 114 and Spur 482; • Installation of drainage structures – inlets, manholes, pipes and culverts continues along Loop 12, Spur 482 and SH 183; • Roadway subgrade activity continues along SPUR 482 under SH 114; • Installation of temporary ITS (Intelligent Traffic Systems) throughout the project is ongoing; • City of Irving waterline and waste waterline work continues on northbound Loop 12 as well as westbound Spur 482.

Worth SH 26 Colleyville The SH 26 Phase II reconstruction project in Colleyville from John McCain Road to Brown Trail began in 2016. The 4-mi.

TxDOT project will widen the roadway to three lanes in each direction and includes raised curb medians to enhance safety. The $38 million project reached substantial completion in November 2020.

The SH 26 Phase I reconstruction in Colleyville from Brumlow Avenue/Pool Road to John McCain Road reached final completion in early 2016. The $11.4 million SH 26 Phase I project widened the roadway to three lanes in each direction with raised curb medians and left-turn bays.

The SH 26 project from Interstate 820 to Brown Trail in North Richland Hills and Hurst is in development and is currently unfunded.

I-35W I-35W is a north-south corridor through Fort Worth, Haslet and Burleson. At its apex in downtown Fort Worth, it carries more than 165,000 vehicles per day. A major national trade corridor, the interstate has daily truck volumes averaging 11 percent. Multiple expansion projects are either planned or underway to improve safety and mobility along 26 mi. of I-35W in Tarrant County.

TxDOT has environmentally cleared I-35W from I-30 to Eagle Parkway to ultimately widen the corridor up to eight mainlanes plus up to six TEXpress Lanes for future traffic volumes.

Construction began in September 2020 on the secondphase of I-35W from U.S. 81/287 to Eagle Parkway. The public-private project will rebuild 6.7 mi. of I-35W and add four TEXpress Lanes, auxiliary lanes and some frontage roads. Anticipated substantial completion is late 2023.

SH 199 Project TxDOT is developing a 17-mi. section of the State Highway 199 corridor in Tarrant County from Western Center Boulevard to White Settlement Road. The corridor will be addressed through the construction of four projects within the 17-mi. section. The total construction cost for the corridor is approximately $580 million.

Currently, one project is complete, one project is under construction and the other two projects are under development.

Houston FM 523 from SH 332 to FM 1495 The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is proposing to reconstruct and widen FM 523 from SH 332 to FM 1495 in Brazoria County, Texas. The proposed project is expected to improve traffic congestion, roadway deficiencies and safety, as well as accommodate the truck traffic accessing the Port of Freeport and industrial facilities in the surrounding area.

Currently, FM 523 consists of two 11-ft.-wide travel lanes with a continuous 14-ft. left-turn lane with variable shoulder widths. The existing right-of-way varies between 120 to 200 ft. wide, with the widest areas occurring at the end of the project (FM 1495).

Proposed improvements include • Widening FM 523 from a two-lane to a four-lane roadway; • Four 12-ft.-wide travel lanes, a continuous 16-ft.-wide turn lane and 10-ft.-wide shoulders • Addition of a 12-ft. turn lane to FM 1495.

FM 646 from I-45 to Bayshore Boulevard The scope of this study is 6.5 mi. of Farm-to-Market (FM) 646 from Interstate Highway (IH) 45 to Bayshore Boulevard in Dickinson. The FM 646 project received environmental clearance in May 2011. The approved project included widening FM 646 from two to four lanes, constructing a raised median, sidewalks and curb-and-gutter drainage from I-45 to Bayshore Boulevard, a total distance of approximately 9 mi. This project is in Galveston County, Texas Proposed improvements include: • Add one travel lane in each direction; • Increase the shoulder width from a varying 7 to 10 ft. to a uniform 12 ft.; • Construct a 16-ft. raised center median; • Construct an overpass at the Union Pacific railroad, with the current at-grade crossing remaining to maintain access to adjacent properties; • Convert the existing open ditch to curb-and-gutter (in some sections).

San Antonio FM 471 from SH 211 to Old FM 471 The Texas Department of Transportation is proposing improvements to FM 471, from SH 211 to Old FM 471, in Bexar, and Medina County, Texas.

The proposed project would expand the existing FM 471 (Culebra Road) from SH 211 to Old FM 471 from a two-lane undivided roadway to a four-lane divided roadway with turn lanes and raised medians, a total distance of approximately 3 mi. The proposed improvements would include drainage improvements, bicycle and pedestrian accommodations and an overpass at SH 211 over FM 471, to connect existing SH 211 north of FM 471 to the proposed SH 211 extension south of FM 471 (project managed

by Bexar County). The proposed FM 471 typical section would consist of four 11- and 12-ft. travel lanes (two in each direction), a 16-ft. median, 5-ft.-wide dedicated bike lanes, and 6-ft-wide sidewalks within a right-of-way (ROW) of 120 ft. on FM 471. The purpose of the proposed project is to improve mobility, reduce traffic delays and improve safety conditions along the corridor. 

Quarry Boosts Contractor’s Production With Loader Tech Since 2017, Central Texas Stone and Aggregate LLC has been on a mission to increase its production of rock and aggregate to support construction jobs throughout central and southern Texas under the guidance of General Manager Cole Bland.

Bland recalls that just three years ago, approximately 70 percent of the quarry materials were used by the family-owned construction business, Joe Bland Construction L.P. “The other 30 percent was sold to other construction companies. I believed we were missing out on a huge opportunity to increase our material capacity and build our customer base,” he said.

Bland set out to double the quarry production from its current 600,000 tons and introduce operational efficiencies with help from modern equipment and advanced technology.

Material Demand Central Texas Stone and Aggregate quarry crews relied on one wheel loader to load customer trucks and another loader to feed the crusher. The quarry was operating much the same as it had since the 1990s — one shift, 200 to 250 tons an hour, producing about 600,000 tons annually.

In 2018, under Bland’s expansion plan, the company needed a second wheel loader to keep up with demand. Bland called the president of Venture Drilling Supply, Colt McCarthy, about ways to increase productivity.

McCarthy recommended a Doosan DL550-5 wheel loader with a 7.5-cu. yd. bucket capacity. The DL550-5 is a workhorse with impressive power, tipping capacity and breakout force. It’s uniquely well suited to material handling in quarries such as Central Texas Stone and Aggregate.

Venture Drilling Supply also was able to customize the DL550-5 loader by pairing it with a larger bucket and counterweights.

That adjustment allowed the quarry crew to fill trucks with 20-plus tons of gravel in just two passes.

Increased sales of materials placed more stress on wheel loader operators to load trucks with speed and accuracy.

Payload Precision In 2019, Central Texas Stone and Aggregate averaged about 190 trucks per day. On its busiest days, there were 50 to 60 trucks and trailers waiting in line for materials — and the pressure on the wheel loader operator is huge.

“Not all haul capacities are the same,” Bland said. “Typically, wheel loader operators visually estimate the total based on scoop counts. But not all trucks and trailers are the same size.”

The DL550-5 is uniquely well suited to material handling in quarries such as Central Texas Stone and Aggregate.

Two similar-looking trucks could have different capacities because of different addons and trimming. One could be 18 tons and the other 16 tons while trailers can range from 21 to 24 tons.

“If the truck is sold by the load, drivers might not be too picky if weight is a little more or less than, say, 23 tons,” Bland said.

“But some drivers are paid by weight. So when a truck is under- or overloaded, the driver has to return to the pit to adjust the load appropriately. When there are 50 to 60 trucks in line, chaos quickly ensues.”

Looking to improve accuracy and reduce the chance of over/under weights, Bland once again called McCarthy, to talk about a technology that he had seen at a recent aggregates conference.

Specifically, he wanted to know more about the Trimble LOADRITE L3180 SmartScale for wheel loaders.

The Trimble LOADRITE L3180 SmartScale is offered as an option by Doosan through its dealers such as McCarthy’s Venture Drilling.

The L3180 SmartScale is an onboard weighing system designed to optimize loadout, track productivity and prevent overloading. It measures load weight lifted by the wheel loader bucket using multi-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors, transducers, Wi-Fi and GPS. The sensors and hydraulic pressure transducers are installed on the loader’s lifting arm mechanism of the

bucket and send information to the LOADRITE indicator in the cab, which converts the data to a digital weight reading. The operator has instant evidence that his estimates are close.

In the cab, the operator can see production metrics using a 5.7-inch color touch screen.

email to drivers. The system is able to deliver precise data — even in rough terrain — technique and machine movement using proprietary weighing techniques.

“It took a day or so to install and calibrate the SmartScale on the Doosan loader and we were ready to go,” Bland said. “Our lead loader operator loves the system. It’s given him greater confidence that he’s loading trucks with accuracy and speed — regardless of truck bed size or material.”

Scaled to Efficiency Since implementing the SmartScale, the team at Central Texas Stone and Aggregate has cut over/under loads from 8 in 100 to fewer than 1 in 100.

Bland said he’s seeing many benefits from

the technology.

“On a busy day, having trucks returning to the pile to adjust loads is costly in both time and customer satisfaction,” he said.

“Without the SmartScale, it could potentially cost me hundreds of dollars a day in time and fuel. With this new system, our customers are much happier with the efficiency that we can get them loaded and on the road to their jobs.”

The L3180 has also provided some checks and balances to the quarry operations. Bland said that one day recently, his crew was getting fluctuating weights on its truck scale compared to the SmartScale weights.

“When we checked the truck scale versus the weight shown on the SmartScale, we confirmed there was an issue with the truck scale,” Bland said. “After more investigation, we found a hydraulic leak.”

The Central Texas Stone and Aggregate quarry continues to grow, adding another 250-plus acres in 2019. The total quarry is more than 500 acres. In 2019, the quarry produced 1.3 million tons operating at 350 tons per hour.

“Higher production and technology have helped us expand our customer base and be more competitive, which was exactly the goal we were hoping to achieve,” Bland said. “I strongly believe that quarry owners would benefit greatly by utilizing the SmartScale for loading trucks. It gives loader operators confidence, minimizes customer turnaround time and drives productivity.”

French Firm Agrees to Buy ASCO, Case Launch ReNew Three Texas Solar Projects Centers in Dallas-Fort Worth France’s oil and gas supermajor, Total, is buying four large-scale solar power projects plus battery storage assets in Texas, with which it plans to meet the electricity demand of all its industrial sites in the United States, including the Port Arthur refining and petrochemicals platform and La Porte and Carville petrochemical sites.

The French oil major, which has been boosting its renewable electricity portfolio and has been signing lots of power purchase agreements [PPAs] for green energy in recent months, is buying the four solar projects for a total of 2.2 gigawatts [GW] plus 600 MW of battery storage assets from SunChase Power and private energy investment firm MAP RE/ES. All projects, each with co-located battery energy storage systems [BESS], are in industrial areas near Houston with high electricity demand and are expected to come online between 2023 and 2024, Total said in a statement.

The oil major will commit to a 1-GW corporate PPA sourced from this solar power and energy storage portfolio to cover all the electricity consumption of its operated industrial sites in the United States, including those

in Port Arthur, La Porte and Carville, Texas.

“With this latest acquisition, Total is now developing close to 4 GW of renewable power capacity in the U.S., thus contributing to our objective to reach close to 35 GW of renewable generation capacity by 2025,” Total’s Chairman and Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanné said in a statement.

At the end of 2020, Total’s gross power generation capacity worldwide was approximately 12 GW, including nearly 7 GW of renewable energy.

Total was the second-largest corporate buyer of clean energy globally in 2020, after Amazon, research by BloombergNEF [BNEF] showed in January. Total signed 3 GW of PPAs last year.

Total has acquired the largest renewable energy portfolio among European oil supermajors since Big Oil started announcing last year net-zero targets and pledging significantly increased investments in renewables, according to Bloomberg data. Since announcing its new strategy and net-zero goals in September 2020, Total has bought as much as 8.8 GW of renewable electricity capacity, either operational or in construction or development phases. 

BigShots Golf Begins Its Construction of Bryan Facility BigShots Golf, ClubCorp’s tech-driven entertainment and culinary experience offering fun for all ages and skill levels, puts its brand growth into overdrive in 2021 beginning with the start of construction at its Bryan, Texas, location. And BigShots Golf franchisee O’Reilly Hospitality Management is slated to open its Fort Worth, Texas, location this spring.

BigShots Golf features game bays where novice players, families and children can play interactive games such as Knockout and Pinball. In addition, avid golfers can play full rounds on virtual golf courses from all over the world, with Doppler radar technology providing data on swing, speed and distance to give a more authentic golfing experience.

In addition to golfing bays, BigShots Golf

will include a private event space, an outdoor patio with fire pits, yard games, mini golf and kids’ activity areas. A key element of the brand is its next-level dining. Each venue will feature a full scratch kitchen serving bold and unexpected menu items, such as the PB & Jam Burger, plus sports bars that offer signature cocktails and local craft beers.

The company is teaming with local investors to bring its brand of “eatertainment” to each community. In Bryan, it partnered with local residents Jim and Allyson Butler to help bring the 40,000-sq.-ft. entertainment venue to the city's new Travis Bryan Midtown Park, just minutes away from Texas A&M University.

BigShots Golf Aggieland is just the beginning, as the company continues to plan future locations and partnerships across the nation.
