In an effort to ease traffic woes and enhance safety, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is making improvements to the U.S. 17 corridor in Pender and New Hanover counties. The $490 million project involves building a bypass around the town of Hampstead in Pender County. “U.S.17 business struggles to handle the increased volume of traffic that has been added over the last several years due to the growth in the area,” Brad Haste, NCDOT resident engineer, told Construction Equipment Guide. “Hampstead has become an extension of Wilmington and Scotts Hill, with major development along the U.S. 17 corridor. The department works to manage the increased traffic movements from residential and commercial development, but there are limits to engineering solutions once traffic volumes hit certain levels.” According to Haste, changes to the U.S. 17 corridor in Pender and New Hanover counties will have a major impact. “With steady growth in this area, the U.S. 17 Hampstead Bypass project will provide an alternate route for motorists to access Military Cutoff Road, N.C. 140 and N.C. 210, which will result in less traffic traveling through the U.S. 17 business corridor in Hampstead. This should result in improved traffic flow and reduced conflicts.” see HAMPSTEAD page 56

Robotic Muscle
Automation, AI Taking Infrastructure Sector By Storm This Year Jobsite robotics technology is a hot topic this year in construction, but especially in transportation construction. The concept of automated construction may still seem futuristic to many, while others have signaled their willingness to dip their toes into the robotics pool. It’s time, say technology developers, who believe that the job of building roads and bridges can and will become more efficient in terms of cost, labor and technology.

Mississippi DOT Reports On More Than $700M in Projects The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is reporting significant progress on a slate of major highway projects across southern Mississippi, with more than $700 million in active work advancing on interstate widening, bridge replacements, safety improvements and corridor upgrades. According to MDOT Commissioner Charles Busby, crews continue making substantial progress on several of the region’s largest transportation investments, including the widening of Interstate 10 between Diamondhead and Gulfport and the reconstruction of State Route 57 in Jackson County.
SR 57 Widening Ahead of Schedule Among the largest projects under way is the $212.6 million widening and realignment of approximately 9 mi. of State Route 57 from Interstate 10 to Vancleave in Jackson County. According to MDOT, the project is currently ahead of schedule. Traffic has shifted onto newly constructed southbound lanes between I-10 and north of Humphrey Road while crews build the future northbound lanes. All 13 bridges included in the contract have been completed. Construction crews continue major earthmoving operations north of Jim Ramsey Road where the new highway alignment is taking shape. Stone base installation and paving operations also continue throughout the corridor. W.G. Yates and Sons Construction Company of Jackson is the prime contractor.

Three of four pedestrian bridges have been installed and Intelligent Transportation Systems work, including traffic cameras and dynamic message signs, remains under way. Huey P. Stockstill LLC of Picayune is performing the work. The project is scheduled for completion in 2027. I-59 Safety Improvements Continue On Interstate 59, a $66.7 million safety improvement project continues in Forrest and Jones counties between the Lamar County line and Moselle. Nearly all paving operations have been completed. Contractors soon will apply highfriction surface treatments to ramps at the U.S. 49 interchange, requiring short-duration ramp closures. Bridge rehabilitation also remains part of the contract, with repairs planned on eight bridges. Work includes replacing bridge joints and bearing pads to extend the service life of the structures while minimizing traffic impacts. Dunn Roadbuilders of Laurel is expected to complete the project this fall.
SR 67 Superstreet Construction Advances In Harrison County, contractors continue work on a $68 million safety improvement project along State Route 67 between U.S. 49 and Interstate 10. The project will convert the corridor into a Superstreet featuring more than 40 Restricted Crossing U-Turn intersections designed to MDOT photo On Interstate 59, a $66.7 million safety improvement project continues in Forrest improve traffic flow and reduce crashes. Current work includes extending a box and Jones counties between the Lamar County line and Moselle.
U.S. 49 Widening Progresses Another major Harrison County project is widening U.S. 49 from four to six lanes between O’Neal Road and north of School Road. According to MDOT, earthwork and stone base placement continue on the northbound side while widening on the southbound side is nearly complete. Crews soon will begin paving the northbound lanes. The project also includes construction of a continuous flow intersection at State Route 53. Necaise Brothers of Gulfport was awarded the $44.9 million contract, with completion expected in 2027.
Welcome Center to Address Truck Parking Needs Construction also is scheduled to begin this summer on a new Jackson County Welcome Center along Interstate 10. The $35.2 million facility will replace the existing welcome center and significantly expand truck parking capacity by adding 62 truck parking spaces and five bus spaces. The project also includes upgraded drainage systems, water infrastructure and accessibility improvements. T.L. Wallace of Columbia is the contractor. Completion is anticipated in summer 2028.
Other Projects Near Completion Several other transportation projects are approaching completion across southern Mississippi, including: the $17 million reconstruction of the Diamondhead I-10 interchange featuring widened ramps, three roundabouts and a multiuse path; the $21.9 million replacement of the U.S. 11 bridge over Hobolochitto Creek in Pearl River County, where traffic has already shifted onto the new bridge; a $14.5 million pedestrian safety project along U.S. 49 in Harrison County; completion of the $16.9 million State Route 63 bridge preservation project over the Escatawpa River in Jackson County; and a $12 million project installing contraflow ramp gates and emergency signage along Interstate 59 and U.S. 84. MDOT also reported continued progress on numerous resurfacing, cable barrier, traffic signal and Intelligent Transportation Systems projects throughout the Southern Transportation District, with several scheduled for completion during summer and fall 2026. Hitachi Outlines LANDCROS Vision, Yanmar Partnership
D
Simon Wilson, chief operations officer of Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas, conveys a lot of information during the meetings in the company’s complete shift to the LANDCROS name in the next nine months.
LANDCROS introduced its wheeled excavators to the North American market during this event and was extremely well received by the dealers.
Strickland MFG touted its attachments and showcased a LANDCROS-painted excavator bucket on the show floor.
Exciting new compact products are coming to dealers’ locations soon, including this Zaxis 35U–7, which was unveiled in the theater area during presentations.
uring its 2026 dealer meeting, Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas shared its ambitious vision of the future as the company prepares to become LANDCROS in April 2027. The transition represents an expanded vision focused on delivering innovative solutions and global partnerships to evaluate expanding machine segments that help customers address their most pressing challenges across construction, mining, quarrying and infrastructure industries, the company said. Takehito Yamaoka, president and representative director of Yanmar Holdings Co. Ltd., and Masafumi Senzaki, president and executive officer of Hitachi Construction Machinery Co. Ltd., announced that the two companies signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) on July 23, 2026, to begin exploring potential collaboration in the compact equipment business. The global construction machinery industry is undergoing significant transformation, and companies are being called upon to address various challenges, such as diversifying customer needs, accelerating technological innovation and intensifying global competition. In the compact equipment sector specifically, achieving sustainable growth and enhanced competitiveness is expected to require new approaches that transcend traditional frameworks, such as collaboration between full-line manufacturers and companies specializing in compact equipment. Both companies share a commitment to the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship, heritage rooted in a shared dedication to high technological prowess, durability and quality. according to the companies. Building upon this foundation, both companies will now explore potential areas of collaboration in the compact construction equipment business. By leveraging the strengths of Yanmar Compact Equipment, a business unit of Yanmar specializing in compact equipment, alongside the global business infrastructure of Hitachi Construction Machinery in the construction and mining machinery sectors, the companies aim to enhance product competitiveness and deliver greater value to customers. This process is intended to be carried out while maintaining and respecting the uniqueness of each company’s brand identity. Both companies also will continue to maintain their independent dealer networks. With a top priority on enhancing value for customers and dealers, both companies will discuss a broad range of collaboration possibilities to contribute to the further development and sustainable growth of the compact equipment business. To solve this, Strobel Manufacturing engineered a powerful tandem system: the Strobel HD 20 Heavy Duty Box Scraper and Dual Earth Packer combination. This system cuts, fills, levels and packs massive swaths of terrain in a single, efficient pass, delivering a drastically lower cost per banked cubic yard, according to Strobel.
One-Pass Tandem Solution Traditional earthmoving workflows require an array of single-purpose machines: one to cut the dirt, another to level it and a heavy roller to compact it. This creates major operational bottlenecks and drives up labor costs. The Strobel integrated scraper-packer tandem eliminates these extra steps completely. By hooking the 20-ft. heavy-duty box scraper directly ahead of the heavy-duty Dual Earth Packers, contractors combine land leveling and high-density compaction into one streamlined operation. Contractors instantly save time, conserve fuel and drastically reduce the number of operators
needed on site, according to Strobel.
Built Strobel Strong When managing large-scale commercial site preparation, feedlot development or agricultural land improvement, structural integrity is non-negotiable. As the widest model in its class, the massive HD 20 is engineered specifically to withstand punishing industrial conditions. Reinforced Structure: Features reinforced, solid-welded sidewalls that prevent flexing and handle high-volume material loads without structural fatigue. Frame Integrity: A continuous tongue is welded entirely through the frame directly to the heavy back plate, optimizing pulling power and stabilizing the unit under maximum stress. Folding tongue and axles allows for transport without wide load permits. Superior Longevity: Built with antirotational, fully greaseable pivot points and replaceable high-strength cutting blades to minimize maintenance downtime. Ultimate Weapon for Haul Road Maintenance Potholes, ruts and wash boarding on heavy construction haul roads cause immediate, costly damage to haul truck suspensions, tires
and cycle times. The HD 20 and Dual Packer combination serves as a maintenance solution for high-traffic haul roads. The massive 20-ft. wide cutting blade effortlessly shaves off high spots, drops material into deep ruts and crowns the road for proper drainage, the company said. Immediately behind the blade, the Strobel Earth Packer seals the surface. Armed with hardened Stoodite teeth arranged in a high-density configuration — providing 30 percent more hard-surfaced teeth than a standard chevron pattern — the packers deliver exceptional, deep compaction while self-cleaning on every single revolution. The result is a well-compacted, tightly sealed haul road that maximizes haul truck speeds and minimizes equipment wear, according to Strobel. High Agility, Permit-Free Transport Despite its massive working footprint, the Strobel system is uniquely engineered for jobsite transitions. Moving a traditional 20-ft. wide piece of equipment normally demands expensive wide-load permits, escort vehicles and routing restrictions. Strobel bypasses this regulatory bottleneck entirely with an intelligent, transport-friendly
design, the company said. The HD 20 features a specialized fold-in tongue alongside folding axles. This allows the entire configuration to fold down into a compact profile, enabling legal road transport between job sites without wide-load permits. On the job, this same axle and tongue geometry grants operators increased agility, allowing for tight, nimble turns in confined spaces that traditional scrapers simply cannot match, according to Strobel. Strobel also offers this set-up with a HD 12 Scraper and Single Packer. This setup delivers maximum dual-action earthmoving efficiency in tight spaces, sharp turns and restricted construction sites where massive self-propelled equipment cannot navigate, added the company.
Lower Capital Investment, Better Bottom Line Investing in self-propelled scrapers and dedicated motor graders requires immense capital expenditure and steep ongoing maintenance costs. The pull-type Strobel HD 20 and Dual Packer system optimizes contractors’ existing tractor fleet, turning a high-horsepower tractor into a highproduction mass grading and compaction machine, according to Strobel.

Global Bin Builders Dismantles Grain Bin With New Equipment Katherine Petrik
CEG SENIOR EDITOR
Taking down an 850,000-bushel grain bin is not a job for brute force alone. For Global Bin Builders, an Iowa-based contractor specializing in grain storage construction and repair, dismantling large steel storage bins is a carefully engineered process that relies on experience, planning and the right equipment. The company recently completed the dismantling of an aging grain storage bin at a poultry feed mill in Rose Hill, N.C., where crews used a Terex TRT 80US rough-terrain crane to remove the structure one section at a time rather than simply pulling it over. “We’re basically taking it down piece by piece,” said Jim Rothers, vice president of Global Bin Builders. “There are elevators, conveyors, and other material handling equipment around it the customer wants to protect. You can never be certain when you are pulling something over.” The bin, which measured approximately 186 ft. in diameter and held an estimated 850,000 bushels of corn, had reached the end of its service life after years of operation. “Everything has a lifespan,” Rothers said. “Some things that cost more have a longer lifespan and some less expensive designs have a shorter lifespan. This particular design had reached that point.” The facility has replaced the aging steel structure with five slip-formed concrete storage silos, each capable of holding roughly 400,000 bushels. Together, the new structures provide modern storage capacity designed for decades of service. Specialized Niche Although Global Bin Builders, led by Stephanie Voxland, president and Rothers’ wife, is known today for constructing and repairing grain bins across the United States,

the company began much differently. Rothers originally operated a millwright business repairing conveyors and material handling equipment at grain facilities. As more customers called asking for grain bin work, he shifted the company’s focus. “The phone just kept ringing,” he said. “I followed where the demand was.” That decision transformed the business. “I worked with four people then,” Rothers said. “Now we work with about 100 people.” Today, erecting new grain bins remains the company’s primary business, but repair work has grown significantly, particularly after severe storms damaged grain storage facilities across the Midwest. The company also has developed proprietary repair methods that allow damaged bins to be restored without complete disassembly. “We’ve developed repairing a bin without taking it completely down and rebuilding it,”
Rothers said. “It’s often about a 50 percent savings.” The technique, which the company calls “repair in the air,” allows crews to replace roofs and repair structural components while leaving much of the original bin standing. Global Bin Builders has completed projects from Connecticut to Oregon, although 70 percent of its work remains concentrated in Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas. Careful Demolition At the North Carolina project, the dismantling sequence began at the top of the structure. Crews first removed roof sections using grinders, impact tools, and the crane before moving to the supporting rafters. Torch cutting was scheduled to begin as demolition progressed, with the sidewalls removed after the roof structure had been dismantled. The controlled process minimizes the risk

of damaging nearby infrastructure while allowing steel components to be safely lowered to the ground. “It’s safer,” Rothers said. “There’s equipment around it that they don’t want damaged.”
Crane Fits Job To complete the dismantling, Global Bin Builders rented a Terex TRT 80US model series rough-terrain crane from Sound Heavy Machinery out of Wilmington, N.C. Rated at 80 tons, the crane features a fivesection, full-power boom that extends to 138 ft. and a 35-ft. jib that can be positioned at 0-, 20- or 40-degree offsets to provide additional reach over the grain bin. The four-wheeldrive, four-wheel-steer crane rides on a single-carrier chassis and uses four hydraulic outriggers to provide a stable lifting platform while crews removed roof sections and structural components. see TEREX page 66

CEG SENIOR EDITOR
ames River Equipment has strengthened its commitment to contractors and equipment owners in western North Carolina with the opening of a new Mills River facility designed to provide expanded service capabilities, increased parts availability and room for future growth. The John Deere Construction and Forestry dealer relocated from its previous facility off Smoky Park Highway in the Enka-Candler area to the new location in mid-July 2026. The move represents a significant investment in the company’s future and its ability to better serve customers throughout the region, according to Dan Metcalf, general manager of James River Equipment’s Mills River location. James River Equipment has served the Asheville market since 2010 when it acquired the existing John Deere dealership that had operated in the area since 1974. “We had outgrown the old facility,” Metcalf told Construction Equipment Guide. “We did not own the facility or the property, so this gives us the opportunity to invest in a location where we can modify it, grow it and continue expanding as our customers’ needs grow.” James River Equipment operates more than 50 locations throughout North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland, representing John Deere Construction and Forestry equipment along with other product lines.

the business, including operations, vendor relationships and dealership management. “They are learning all the different facets of the business. Mark is bringing them up through the ranks and preparing them to continue the legacy.” Facility Built for Growth The new Mills River facility sits on 16.5 acres and includes more than 36,000 sq. ft. of building space, including offices, customer areas, parts storage and service operations. The new building consists of approximately 22,000 sq. ft. of shop space; a 5,000-sq.-ft. parts warehouse inside the main building; and a 10,000-sq.-ft. auxiliary
warehouse. “We are able to stock more parts and create more first-fill opportunities for our customers across all the product lines we represent,” Metcalf said. “We are at the point where customers come in and get what they need the same day 95 percent of the time.” The expanded service area measures 120 ft. wide by 180 ft. long and includes 10-ton cranes that allow technicians to lift larger components and service larger machines. The facility also provides 7 ft. more crane hook height. “We can get bigger machines in, we can lift more and we can work on more equipment at one time,” Metcalf said. see JRE page 40
Industry Experience Spans 100 Years The Mills River expansion comes as James River Equipment celebrates a century of serving customers in the equipment industry in 2026. The company was founded in 1926 by I.R. Romer in Holly, Colo. What began as a small dealership grew into a multistate equipment organization built on customer relationships, product support and long-term partnerships. Today, James River Equipment remains family owned and operated, with multiple generations of the Romer family involved in the business. “The Romer family has learned a lot over the last 100 years,” Metcalf said. “It started with Mark Romer’s grandfather, I.R. Romer, and the company has continued to grow through each generation.” The company’s next generation of leadership continues to learn all aspects of dealership operations. Metcalf noted that Mark Romer’s children are involved in different areas of (L-R) are parts specialists Dylan Eggers, Lance Massie, Curtis Holst and Barry Jernigan.

3D-Printed Bridge Points Way to Greener Construction By Stephanie Martinovich SPECIAL TO CEG
Concrete is the most widely used building material on Earth, and producing it is one of the largest single sources of carbon emissions. One promising way to reduce its environmental footprint is to 3D-print concrete, laying it down bead by bead like a giant icing-piping robot. This process eliminates the labor-intensive formwork of pouring it into molds, and places the material only where a structure needs it. But many of the most efficient designs created by computers are impossible for today’s printers to build. Engineers use a technique called topology optimization to find the strongest structure that uses the least amount of material. But those mathematically ideal designs, with their intricate, spiderweb shapes, don’t account for the physical limitations of large-scale concrete printers with their thick nozzles, limited turning and need to print in one continuous motion. Now a team of MIT researchers has developed a way to close that gap. Their framework, described in a new article in Additive Manufacturing, bakes a printer’s real fabrication limits directly into the optimization, so the design that comes out is one a machine can build and print with little or no manual redesign. They demonstrated it by designing, printing, and loadtesting a 2.3-meter concrete bridge and found that today’s printing hardware, not the concrete itself, limits how light a structure can be. “We were finding a lot of cracks you can fall through when it comes to translating these super-optimal designs into manufacturable designs,” said co-first author Hajin Kim-Tackowiak PhD ‘26, a postdoc in MIT’s Department

of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE). “Those cracks were like chasms.” Designing for What Can Be Built To pin down the constraints, the team worked with the people who run the large-scale printing machines at Autodesk’s facility in Boston. “They pointed at some of our sharp angles, and they went, ‘I don’t feel safe printing something like that,’” Kim-Tackowiak said. Those conversations surfaced three key limitations: how thick each printed bead must be, how sharply the nozzle can turn and
the need to print in a single continuous line. The researchers translated each constraint directly into the mathematical rules of their framework. Existing 3D-printed structures are typically produced with older methods that optimize the shape first, and then require “a massive amount of post-processing,” taking days to run, Kim-Tackowiak said. By contrast, the team’s framework generated fully printable designs in about two minutes on a laptop. When the team needed to slightly reduce the bridge’s size on the day of printing, they simply reran the optimization and had an updated design five to 10 minutes later.
“Reaching that speed at all is recent,” said co-first author Zane Schemmer, a PhD student in CEE. The math the method relies on, mixed-integer optimization, was long considered too hard to use. “You go back five, 10 years ago, the solver we used, even three years ago, could not solve these problems,” he said. “This field has been avoided, because everyone thinks that’s not an avenue we can go down. But with new algorithms and resources, it’s becoming a way we can start to frame problems.” Bridge Reveals Real Limitation To validate the framework,
the researchers went back to Autodesk’s facility to print a 2.3-meter-long concrete bridge. “The bridge took about 30 minutes to make and was built from off-the-shelf mortar,” said senior author Josephine Carstensen, the Gilbert W. Winslow (1937) Career Development Professor in Civil Engineering. In testing, the roughly 900-lb. structure held more than 2,000 lbs. spread across it with virtually no measurable bending, closely matching the team’s simulations. But the test also revealed the study’s biggest surprise. see BRIDGE page 26

MIT Researchers Design, Load Test 3D Concrete Bridge BRIDGE from page 25
“What we found was our result was super over-engineered,” Kim-Tackowiak said. “From zero to 200,000 pounds, your design is entirely driven by these ‘can I build it or not’ constraints. And then, after 200,000 pounds, you can start to think about the physics.” In other words, the limits of current printing technology, not the strength of concrete, were dictating how efficient the structure could be. Roadmap for Better Printers Because the framework finds the mathematically best possible design, the researchers could measure exactly how much each hardware limitation costs in material. “With mixed-integer optimization, we can find the global optimum, the best solution there is, as opposed to just a good solution,” Carstensen said. “Because we know we’re finding the best solution out there, we can also quantify: If we had a machine that could do other things, what would that mean for how much material we’re using?” “The single biggest lever was the width of the printed bead. The bridge used a 4 centimeter bead. The analysis showed a machine that was able to lay a 1 cm bead could cut material MIT Researchers photo use by as much as 76 percent During testing, the roughly 900-lb. bridge held more than 2,000 lbs. while staying “well within of concrete blocks spread across its top without measurably bending, safety margins,” Carstensen closely matching the team’s simulations. said. The result surprised her. “I thought the continuous path would be the problem, the one that had the highest effect,” she said. “But it wasn’t. It was the bead width.” The result is a roadmap for printer-makers showing Hajin Kim-Tackowiak that modest hardware MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering improvements could unlock large gains in efficiency and cut concrete’s carbon MIT Researchers photo it: Concrete is weak when pulled, concrete structure, is proving its own A close-up of the bridge shows the stacked layers, or beads, footprint. and the lift put parts of the bridge challenge.” Part of what made the of extruded concrete, laid down in a single continuous path The work was funded by the National in tension they were never meant bridge possible is that every with no molds. Easi-Pour and Topcon have integrated technologies to create a paving system for sidewalks, gutters and curbs.
As automation continues to transform the construction industry, manufacturers are developing new technologies that help contractors improve efficiency, accuracy and productivity on the job site. Responding to increased demand for stringless paving solutions, Easi-Pour and Topcon Positioning Systems have integrated their technologies to deliver a more automated concrete paving solution for curb, gutter, sidewalk and barrier work. The integration combines Easi-Pour’s iSlip Control System with Topcon’s 3D machine control technology to create a fully automated, stringless paving system designed to reduce material waste, accelerate project timelines and improve surface smoothness and consistency, according to Easi-Pour and Topcon. Contractors using the system report measurable gains in production efficiency while maintaining high-quality paving standards. “The Topcon system works with the advanced iSlip Control Systems,” said Curtis Bales, sales manager of EasiPour. “It is designed to better automate machine control and increase machine capabilities to enable accurate, stringless concrete paving for curbs, gutter, sidewalks and barriers.” Topcon’s 3D machine control technologies, including Local Positioning Systems (LPS) and exclusive Millimeter GPS system for curbers, eliminate the need for traditional stringline by guiding Easi-Pour curbers with millimeter-level accuracy. The technology allows contractors to load digital project models directly into the machine control system, reducing setup time while improving paving precision. According to Daniel Peters, senior manager of Concrete Paving Products of Topcon Positioning Group, the relationship between the companies has played a critical role in the success of the integration. “The cooperation, integrity and trust between Easi-Pour
RING POWER www.ringpower.com
and Topcon has been paramount,” Peters said. “The system is successful because of the collaboration between the manufacturer, Topcon, and the dealer network supporting the contractor in the field.” Peters added that dealer support is a key component of successful implementation. “Easi-Pour, Topcon and the dealer work directly with the paving contractor to ensure the machine is ready, all systems are functioning properly, and crews have the confidence and training necessary to perform at a high level,” Peters said. RDO Equipment Co. serves as a major authorized dealer for Topcon Positioning Systems, providing sales, service and support for machine control, laser and surveying technologies used throughout the construction industry. The integrated Topcon system is currently available on the Easi-Pour 880 TRP curb machine and the Easi-Pour 1000, a heavy-duty four-track slipform concrete paver designed for high-production curb, gutter, sidewalk and barrier applications. “This is all about quality and time savings compared to traditional methods,” Bales said. “Contractors using the integrated system can expect a technology game-changer for concrete paving operations.” By eliminating labor-intensive survey staking and reducing reliance on stringline, contractors can expect faster project startup, increased production rates and improved overall jobsite efficiency, according to Easi-Pour and Topcon. As adoption of automated paving technology continues to expand, the collaboration between Easi-Pour, Topcon and supporting dealers is helping contractors transition to more efficient and precise paving operations while meeting increasing demands for productivity and quality across the industry.

Felling Launches Its Biggest ‘Trailer for a Cause’ Auction
Felling Trailers Inc. will hold its 14th annual Trailer for a Cause online auction Sept. 24-30, 2026, with proceeds benefiting Henry’s Heroes, a Central Minnesotabased nonprofit that supports families navigating the emotional and financial challenges of a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) journey. This year’s auction features the company’s largest capacity Trailer for a Cause to date: a custom FT-12 Pan drop deck trailer. Felling Trailers’ goal is to raise awareness of the valuable work Henry’s Heroes does for the families and community members it serves throughout Central Minnesota and beyond. The FT-12 Pan features an overall deck length of 22 ft. and a payload capacity of 11,100 lbs. The Pan trailer was painted charcoal metallic gray with a custom “Henry’s Heroes” purple stripe and white pinstriping on the sides, and it bears the Henry’s Heroes emblem. “Over the past several years, we kept hearing the same request from auction participants: They wanted to see a bigger, more versatile trailer up for bid,” said Pat Jennissen, Felling Trailers vice president of sales and marketing. “This year, we listened. We moved up from our FT-3, with its 1,800-lb. capacity, to the FT-12 Pan, which offers an impressive 11,100 lb. capacity. It’s our hope that this change will generate even more excitement and participation and ultimately result in a higher winning bid for Henry’s Heroes.” A collection of suppliers joined Felling Trailers in sponsoring the 2026 trailer construction: PPG, Peterson Mfg., Ram, Dexter, Demco, Taskmaster, Fastenal and Ratner Steel. Their contributions cover everything from lighting systems to tires to the steel the trailer is constructed from. The complete

winning bid will go directly to Henry’s Heroes so it can continue to help more families going through the NICU journey and the struggles that come with it. The Trailer for a Cause build was completed in early June, just in time for Henry’s Heroes’ 4th Annual Walk, where it was on display with information about the upcoming auction. The Henry’s Heroes’ Walk brought together more than 750 participants, volunteers and NICU families, who joined to support families experiencing a NICU stay. For organizers, one of the most meaningful parts of the day is seeing the recipient families connect with one another, share their stories and realize they are not alone in the journey. Beyond financial assistance, the Henry’s Heroes team provides care packages, quilts, gift cards and meals for NICU families and staff throughout the year. With the support of the community, Henry’s Heroes has assisted

78 NICU families since 2023. “Henry’s Heroes was founded after Henry’s 87-day NICU journey, and every year we are reminded of the incredible power of community,” according to the Henry’s Heroes board. “What began as a way to give back has grown into a network of support for families facing one of life’s most unexpected challenges. Every donation, volunteer, sponsor and participant helps
ensure that no NICU family feels alone. This year we raised over $74,000, and we are so excited to see what the future holds for this nonprofit.” Winners must arrange pickup at Felling Trailers’ manufacturing facility in Sauk Centre or coordinate delivery (freight charges additional). Industrial Truck Beds Rebrands as Hilltip Premium Truck Industrial Truck Beds, the Indiana-based manufacturer of premium truck beds acquired by Hilltip in 2022, has rebranded as Hilltip Premium Truck Beds. The change reflects the company’s expanding truck bed offerings, as well as its alignment with the Hilltip portfolio of snowplows, spreaders, de-icing sprayers, sweepers and other road maintenance equipment manufactured in the same Fort Wayne facility. Hilltip Premium Truck Beds designs and manufactures hooklift and interchangeable beds, as well as dump beds, flat beds, and custom-built or private-label solutions. These products are engineered to outlast the commercial chassis, while providing optimal load capacity, stability and versatility. “We’re proud to build on strong legacy of Industrial Truck Beds and further strengthen our commitment to North American manufacturing,” said Craig Sandmann, managing director for Hilltip North America. “This new chapter reflects who we’ve become — a team dedicated to producing premium custom truck bed solutions that help people work smarter and more efficiently. Despite the name change, customers can expect us to continue delivering the quality and reliability they’ve expected from this line of truck beds since 1986.” Headquartered in Pietarsaari, Finland, Hilltip is a manufacturer of road maintenance equipment in Europe. With equipment designed and built in an area that averages at least six months of snowfall every year, Hilltip is known for its extreme durability and advanced technologies. Following the acquisition of Industrial Metal Products (Industrial Truck Beds) in 2022, Hilltip has a manufacturing, sales and service location in Fort Wayne, Ind., to better cater to the North American market. Summit Scales 1229 Crane Platform Into Heavy-Duty Territory Summit Truck Bodies introduced its 1229 hydraulic crane and advanced safety electronics (ASE) Phase 5 control system at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2026, expanding the company’s next-generation crane platform into heavy-duty applications. The fully integrated solution delivers 12,000-lb. lifting capacity with 29-ft. reach while weighing 205 lbs. less than previous 12,000-lb. models. The weight reduction directly translates into increased payload capacity, allowing operators to carry additional tools, parts and fluids without exceeding chassis limits. Increased payload capacity offers a critical advantage for heavy equipment dealers, utility operators, mining service providers, oil and gas field service providers and construction equipment repair operations. Engineered for 8 Series bodies and larger on 26,000 GVWR chassis and above, the 1229 brings the structural innovations, continuous rotation capability and fully proportional controls recently introduced with Summit’s 829 crane to operators who need higher lifting capacity for engines, transmissions, counterweights and heavy components. Picking, Stowing The 1229 employs a fully proportional
control valve that enables seamless movement of all functions simultaneously. Combined with continuous rotation capability, the system delivers picking, positioning and stowing speeds up to three times faster than traditional crane systems, according to Summit. The speed advantage translates to measurable productivity gains for fleet operators. Service technicians complete more calls per day, and equipment downtime decreases when repairs can be executed faster. Weight-to-Strength Advantage The 1229 achieves its 205-lb. weight reduction through the same engineering approaches that defined the 829: stronger and lighter boom profiles paired with a redesigned rotate assembly. The crane features a revised hexagonal boom profile with a flat bottom that reduces section height while maintaining selfcentering alignment. The boom profile enables an elevation range from negative 10 degrees to 77.5 degrees positive. A fully enclosed worm and gear rotate assembly provides better protection and reduced maintenance compared to open-face designs. The double-row slewing bearing delivers an 80,000 ft.-lb. rating, 37.5 percent stronger than previous standard models,
while weighing 30 percent less at 180 lbs. compared to 255 lbs. Additional structural improvements include a relocated winch positioned behind the main boom pivot and lowered on an angled mounting bracket to reduce overall crane height to 38.5 in. when stowed. A redesigned modular anti-two-block system requires zero adjustment and features bolt-on components for easier replacement. Total Cost of Ownership The 1229 is fully compatible with Summit’s advanced ASE Phase 5 from launch, with all features from the 829 carrying over to the higher-capacity crane. The intelligent control system dramatically lowers total cost of ownership by slashing life cycle maintenance costs through predictive diagnostics and realtime system monitoring. The ASE Phase 5 control system features an updated touchscreen interface with realtime diagnostics for all monitored systems. A dedicated maintenance menu tracks service intervals and monitors component lifespans, enabling predictive maintenance scheduling that prevents breakdowns before they occur, according to Summit. The system supports integration with fleet management platforms, providing operators
with comprehensive data to optimize truck use and minimize unexpected downtime. The wireless remote includes a fullcolor display with customizable interface options and integrated vehicle alarm for theft deterrence. The system operates and monitors the engine, PTO, outriggers, lights and all crane functions from three control points: the main panel in the rear compartment, cab control panel and wireless remote. Auto-deploy, auto-retract and auto-stow functions through the wireless remote, along with customizable hot keys for frequently used tasks, further streamline operations and reduce the time technicians spend on crane setup and breakdown between service calls.
Coordinated Production Rollout The 1229 enters production in Q2 2026 as part of Summit’s coordinated rollout alongside the 829 crane and broader Phase 5 system expansion across the company’s hydraulic crane lineup. The simultaneous launch demonstrates Summit’s manufacturing capabilities and vertical integration, with all cranes sharing the same advanced control architecture built factorydirect. Quality Equipment & Parts Opens Second Florida Location in Belleview
Q
uality Equipment & Parts Inc. celebrated the grand opening of its new Belleview, Fla., branch July 24, 2026, welcoming customers, manufacturer representatives and industry guests to tour the facility and mark the company’s expansion into north central Florida. The event featured a catered lunch and provided attendees an opportunity to meet company personnel and representatives from several equipment manufacturers. The Belleview location, at 7722 SE 126th Place, is the company’s second branch and represents the culmination of approximately five years of planning. The expansion was driven by continued growth throughout north central Florida and is intended to strengthen the company’s sales, rentals, parts and service support in the Ocala-Belleview market. The new branch is a full-line dealership for DEVELON, Yanmar, ASV, Bandit, CMI, Jarraff, Shearex and Denis Cimaf equipment, as well as a variety of forestry and construction attachments. Michael Bower, a seven-year company veteran, serves as general manager and oversees the branch’s daily operations. A key component of the new location is its emphasis on field service, allowing technicians to respond more quickly to customers throughout the region. The facility also supports the company’s broader strategy. “The Belleview branch is part of our continued effort to support customers better after the sale,” said Rylee McKenzie, second-generation owner of Quality Equipment & Parts. “We want to be more than a place that sells equipment. Our model is built around equipment sales, rentals, parts, service, forestry support and long-term customer relationships.” For more information, visit qepusa.com. The dealership also added a 4,000-sq.-ft. service area connected to the auxiliary warehouse. Equipped with a 5-ton crane, the space is dedicated to undercarriage repairs, cylinder work and heavy welding. Expanding Service Support The larger facility has allowed James River Equipment to increase staffing and expand its ability to support customers. “We have 45 employees out of this location and have more than quadrupled our business since we started covering the Asheville area.” The dealership added additional sales personnel, technicians, parts employees and administrative staff to support the increased demand. James River Equipment currently has eight outside service technicians operating fully equipped service trucks with cranes, tooling and repair equipment to handle field repairs. “If we run into something in the field that we cannot do there, we now have the capacity to bring it into this facility and complete the repair,” Metcalf said. The location also operates lube trucks that provide preventive maintenance services for customers. “Our guys go out, perform the service, remove the waste oil and bring everything back so we can properly handle it,” Metcalf said. The dealership also works proactively with customers through customer service advocates who inspect machines, measure undercarriage wear and help identify potential maintenance needs before failures occur. “We like to call it planned downtime,” Metcalf said. “We want to catch things before there is a breakdown. We work with customers to help keep their machines running and productive.” Investing in Customers, Training Customers who have visited the new facility

have responded positively to the investment, according to Metcalf. “Our longtime customers are very impressed. They are congratulating us and saying how amazing the facility looks. They love the size of the shop and appreciate the investment we are making to support them.” Metcalf said the dealership views its relationship with customers as a long-term partnership. “We look at this as a partnership. It is not one side or the other. We work together from the sale or rental of equipment to parts and repairs.” James River Equipment also continues to invest in technician training. The company has three in-house trainers dedicated to helping technicians stay current through John Deere programs, manufacturer education and hands-on instruction. “We take training seriously,” Metcalf said. “Our technicians are constantly learning the latest technology so we can repair machines correctly the first time.” The dealership also has expanded its product offerings with Wirtgen Group equipment, including Wirtgen milling machines, Vögele pavers and Hamm rollers, as well as paving, crushing and screening solutions. “These products have been a great addition to our mainline John Deere construction equipment,” Metcalf said. With the new Mills River facility, James River Equipment is positioned to continue supporting contractors throughout western North Carolina for years to come. “We want customers to know we are here to be their partner for the long haul,” Metcalf said. “This investment shows our commitment to them and to this market.” For more information, visit jamesriverequipment.com. Kleemann Crusher Safety System Earns ISSA Recognition The International Social Security Association (ISSA) honored a safetyrelevant solution for the Kleemann impact crusher MOBIREX MR 100 NEO/NEOe with its Lock & Turn Quick Access system.
Kleemann accepts the honors.
This system reduces the work risk to operators and facilitates access to the crushing chamber. The Safety Award of the ISSA Section on Machine and System Safety honors developments that make a demonstrable contribution to improving occupational safety. Evaluation criteria include unique features, the risk reduction achieved and ergonomic aspects. The standard Lock & Turn Quick Access system in the MOBIREX MR 100 NEO makes it possible to open and close the crusher unit housing at the push of a button – and only after the rotor has come to a complete standstill, according to Kleemann. This defuses a central hazard point in the operation of impact crushers: access to the crushing chamber during or immediately after machine operation. Previously, opening the crusher housing required the manually loosening multiple bolted connections, mostly in hard-to-reach areas. This resulted in a higher workload and greater risks for the operators. These steps are now eliminated with Lock & Turn Quick Access, and any material bridging can be cleared in the shortest possible time. Tool-free opening of
the crusher is a further positive feature that guarantees fast service and maintenance. “Our ‘Lock & Turn Quick Access’ allows our customers to open the crusher quickly at the push of a button,” said Laurin Winter, product management for mobile impact crushers at Kleemann. “This takes a mere 30 seconds. The operator thus has a full view of the crushing chamber quickly and without any manual intervention. A blow bar replacement, for example, is extremely convenient but also simplifies workflows. Since the housing can be
opened within approximately 30 seconds, visual inspections and maintenance work can be carried out faster. This facilitates the early detection of wear.” With this award, according to Kleemann, the ISSA recognizes a safety engineering advancement that responds to a central risk in the operation of crushing plants. The combination of safety, simplified handling, and the ability to perform regular inspections without high effort convinced the jury. (All photos courtesy of Kleemann.)
The standard Lock & Turn Quick Access system in the MOBIREX MR 100 NEO makes it possible to open and close the crusher unit housing at the push of a button.

In an effort to ease traffic woes and enhance safety, the North Carolina Department of Transportation is making improvements to the U.S. 17 corridor in Pender and New Hanover counties.

Heavy equipment being used during construction includes lattice cranes, excavators, bulldozers, off-road dump trucks, rollers, backhoes, skid steers and concrete pump trucks.
The Hampstead Bypass is being built in two segments. R-3300A extends from N.C. 140 (formerly known as the U.S. 17 Wilmington Bypass) to N.C. 210. Work on this portion began in September 2025. So far, several reinforced concrete box culverts have been completed, along with some of the drainage ditches and drainage pipes. “Clearing and grubbing is 50 percent complete,” said Haste. “The contractor has placed about 500,000 cubic yards of borrow and has begun working on a couple of bridges. At this early stage of the project, there are many tasks remaining that are vital to completing this project on time.” Haste said completion of clearing and grubbing on the mainline and finishing the bridges around the N.C. 140 interchange will be among the project milestones. The other segment, R-3300B, extends from N.C. 210 to north of Hampstead. The contractor is currently placing borrow, constructing bridges and working on grading and paving in the area of the U.S. 17 interchange. Construction on this segment is expected to be completed in late 2027. Haste noted that constructing a bypass around the town of Hampstead in Pender County requires significant planning. “Building a bypass in urban areas presents challenges with traffic management. This includes making sure that motorists stay informed regarding changes to the traffic pattern as the project progresses through the construction phases. S.T. Wooten, headquartered in Wilson, N.C., serves as general contractor for R-3300A. Conti Civil LLC, with offices in Edison, N.J., and Raleigh, N.C., is overseeing work on R-3300B. Heavy equipment being used during construction includes lattice cranes, excavators, bulldozers, off-road dump trucks, rollers, backhoes, skid steers and concrete pump trucks. Concrete, steel, asphalt, stone and dirt are among the chief materials required to complete the work. Not surprisingly, crews are constantly keeping an eye on the forecast. “Dry weather means it may be difficult to get soil compaction, which means the contractor has to manage optimal moisture and dust control with more water trucks,” said Haste. “Establishing vegetation to prevent erosion becomes challenging when rain is limited, or when you get one inch of rain in 30 minutes on bare soil. “Being near the coast, we get volatile weather like afternoon thunderstorms, tropical storms and hurricanes. It makes erosion control management difficult for contractors. I think all states have different challenges with weather when it comes to construction, but most contractors have adapted to get the work done.” The full project is slated for completion in 2030. Although much work remains, Haste said drivers will benefit in the long run from the ongoing closures and delays. “This project will provide motorists the ability to bypass Hampstead and Wilmington via I-140, which means those traveling in Hampstead and Wilmington should see less congestion. It’s good to be part of something that will have a long-lasting positive impact on so many people.” CEG

Contractors Investing More Into Robotics, AI Technology ROBOTICS from page 1
From drones to remote-controlled machines, the infrastructure sector is an open road when it comes to robotics, AI and all things automated. The construction labor shortage is not going away, and construction workers the industry does count on are aging. That’s a big part of technology developers’ rapid drive to introduce fresh technology such as automation and remote operation to contractors. “For some, our long-term objective may still sound like science fiction,” said Stefan Klumpp, CTO of HAMM AG, a Wirtgen Group company. “Eventually, aided by our developments, road construction of the future will become even more cost-effective, more efficient and better.” What Does the Future Hold for Road Builders? Robotics usage has risen sharply over the past year, said Audrey Lynch, director of research for construction intelligence company BuiltWorlds. The company recently released is 2026 list of the top robotics companies in around the world. It found that this year’s list shows the growing use of robotics “on and off the job site, including significant advancements in spatial AI.” “We’ve seen jobsite robotics usage rise sharply since 2025,” said Lynch, adding that those piloting robotics rose three-fold. She believes that signals a growing awareness and willingness to test the technology. On the job site, robotics systems focused on layout, installation and finishing, inspection and monitoring and drilling were most sought-after. Material transport, earthmoving and excavation and demolition made the list in the category of automated machinery and related solutions Off site, 3D printing and additive manufacturing as well as prefabricated component manufacturing came in on BuildWorks Top 50 list. It’s no surprise that among the robotics companies spotlighted on this year’s list was a clear increase in the incorporation of AI, according to Lynch. “Advancements in spatial AI are increasing the applications of robotics throughout the global environment,” Lynch said. From jobsite robotics companies to autonomous equipment providers, the transition of robotics from potential tools to applicable technologies is represented. And though the BuildWorks list is a global one, several North American companies are developing technology for

The transportation infrastructure sector is ripe for the robotics technology industry. Many contractors are ready to take the plunge and invest in automated equipment, AI technology and robotics systems.
the transportation construction sector: Cyphra Autonomy builds autonomous robotic haulers that move materials across construction sites without training or setup time from field crews. According to BuildWorks, the startup rents its robots directly to contractors. Workers stay focused on skilled tasks instead of material movement. Gecko Robotics combines wall-climbing inspection robots with its AI platform for continuous visibility into the structural health of critical infrastructure. Power plants, industrial facilities and bridges have been inspected using robotic data collection to track surface corrosion and degradation. Toggle Robotics pre-assembles rebar cages off site with industrial robots, AI and a proprietary software platform. Delivering the cages to job sites, the solution has been deployed on transit infrastructure, bridge decks and renewable energy projects across the United States. Other companies are rapidly changing their corporate models to develop robotic infrastructure streamlining technology. According toThe Robot Report, construction management software provider Procore has acquired DroneDeploy, a robotics and visual intelligence platform developer. Designed for the built world, DroneDeploy’s system has been used on more than three million job sites across more than 180 countries. Ajei Gopal, Procore president and CEO, said the goal is to cross-sell the two products. “For the longer term, adding DroneDeploy’s technology into the Procore platform will enable us to accelerate our AI strategy,” Gopal added.
The two companies said the combination of their technologies will enable users to see, understand and act within Procore. In July, startup TerraFirma announced funding acquisitions to expand its robotics engineering, manufacturing, operations and construction teams. The company also is continuing to develop a line of semi-autonomous heavy equipment, according to The Robot Report. Public Works Entities Adopt Cutting Edge Technology State and local governments are seeing the benefits of automation, AI and robotics technology for federal compliance requirements. U.S. cities are leveraging robots to evaluate sidewalk conditions to improve communities’ physical accessibilities and meet ADA standards. Daxbot uses autonomous robots equipped with sensors to collect data such as sidewalk level changes. In an article for Government Technology, Julia Edinger reported that these robots have been deployed in cities across the United States. “These assessments by the robots help us identify all the deficiencies as it relates to the accessibility standards,” said Errick Thompson of Burleson, Texas. The city did not replace the human element of the work, Thompson emphasized in speaking with Government Technology. Hands-on training was provided for staff to do these same assessments to support the verification process and other evaluation needs, reported Edinger. Daxbot’s robots can weigh the different
types of sidewalk defects differently so government users can prioritize investments. Caltrans is using robotics technology to mitigate the need for human inspectors to enter risky confined spaces. The Sacremento Bee reported that “Spot,” a headless, robotic dog produced by Boston Dynamics, is being sent into these spaces based on need. “It’s not a tool that we use every day, but when you need it, you really need it,” said Aaron Chamberlin, a field systems coordinator of Caltrans. The robots are equipped with sensors that quickly gather information that would take human maintenance workers longer to safely obtain. Chamberlin said that Caltrans invested in several Spots as part of a broader effort to use robotic technologies to improve safety for workers. The agency also sought to more effectively maintain and repair the state’s infrastructure. Equipment Manufacturers at the Ready Heavy machinery manufacturers have seen the writing on the wall. Wirtgen Group reported that HAMM AG is developing selfdriving compaction machines. The company said trials currently under way within the limits of a test track “are just one component” of the future-orientated “autonomous rollers” project. Studies and trials at HAMM have demonstrated that such machines allow compaction quality and efficiency to be noticeably increased. Systems for navigation, speed control, spacers, lane assistants, parking and steering aids are increasingly establishing themselves, said Wirtgen. “These assistance systems form the basis of the self-driving trucks and cars that are being developed by industry pioneers” and are being track-tested. “Rollers for asphalt and soil compaction will be among the first vehicles in which such systems will widely establish themselves,” said Klumpp. Klumpp said that’s because they are closer to cars than many other types of machine. Meanwhile, Caterpillar this year announced it has teamed with Nvidia to advance the integration of AI and automation into its construction machinery lines. Semiconductor maker Nvidia is working with Cat to pilot an AI assistive system in the machinery manufacturer’s mid-size mini-excavator. Cat AI Assistant was built on a fleet of AI agents and can answer operator questions, allow access to resources, offer safety tips and schedule services. see ROBOTICS page 68

Terex TRT 80US Helps Global Bin Builders Work Efficiently TEREX from page 20
The combination of boom length, jib configuration and lifting capacity allowed operators to safely lower steel sections from the top of the approximately 186-ft.-diameter structure without disturbing surrounding conveyors, elevators, or other equipment. Rothers said he discovered the crane while searching for equipment available near the project site and rented it with the possibility of purchasing it after the job. “It’s really working well for us.” Built in Italy, the crane appealed to Rothers because of its rugged construction and straightforward operation. “It’s stout,” he said. “It doesn’t get pushed around by the wind so much.” Rather than choosing a crane loaded with electronic features, Rothers said he values reliability and simplicity.
“I like simple. There are cranes you can spend a lot more money on with more bells and whistles, but there is also a lot more to maintain.” For the type of work Global Bin Builders performs, he believes uncomplicated equipment is often the better investment. “I want to turn the key and go to work. If I step away for 15 minutes, I want my number two guy to be able to get in the crane and run it without having to figure out a complicated computer system.” He acknowledged that sophisticated crane technology has its place, particularly on congested urban job sites where advanced load monitoring systems and automated safety features are required. “If you’re in lower Manhattan, that’s a different situation,” he said. “Those cranes have a place.”
For grain storage projects, however, he said the TRT 80US crane’s conventional load charts and straightforward controls are exactly what his crews need. “I’m just going to put my outriggers all the way out and go to work,” Rothers said. “I don’t need to spend another $100,000 on features we aren’t going to use.” After consistently exceeding job site expectations, the crane proved its value, leading Rothers to purchase it from Sound Heavy Equipment.
Nationwide Reputation Despite working in a specialized segment of the construction industry, Global Bin Builders has steadily expanded through referrals and relationship building. Rothers credits the company’s growth
to hiring a dedicated salesperson who attends industry conferences, meets with insurance adjusters, and maintains customer relationships. “It’s a small industry. Word of mouth goes a long way.” That reputation has helped the company build and repair grain storage facilities throughout the country while tackling increasingly complex projects, including replacing roofs on 100-ft.-diameter grain bins without dismantling the entire structure. Whether erecting new storage facilities, restoring storm-damaged bins or carefully dismantling aging structures like the one in Rose Hill, Rothers said the company’s focus remains the same: completing challenging work safely, efficiently and with equipment that matches the job. The four-wheel-drive, four-wheel-steer crane rides on a single-carrier chassis and uses four hydraulic outriggers to provide a stable lifting platform while crews removed roof sections and structural components.

Construction Equipment Is Becoming More Autonomous ROBOTICS from page 62
Cat said one of the biggest benefits of integrating AI tech into these machines is the data that the systems collect and send back out. “Our customers don’t live in front of a laptop day in and day out; they live in the dirt,” said Brandon Hootman, vice president of data and AI of Caterpillar. “The ability to get the insights and take the action that they need while they’re doing the work is very important to them,” he told TechCrunch. Caterpillar also is piloting digital twins of construction sites using Nvidia’s Omniverse library of simulation resources. Hootman said Caterpillar’s machines send roughly 2,000 messages back to the company every second. This data will help them build these simulations. Cat already has autonomous vehicles in the mining sector and Hootman said pilot programs are a great next step to bringing more automation to the portfolio. A tech-enabled construction company focused on robotic earthworks and site operations, the company builds and uses robotics and software in the field.
Co-founder Noah Schochet said TerraFirma is building the robotic infrastructure stack by combining AI, remote command and retrofitted machinery. This heavy machinery includes excavators, dozers, loaders, rollers and skid steers converted into robots that no longer require an operator in the cab. “Instead, skilled operators orchestrate entire fleets from screens, using the same intuition and judgment they’ve built over years,” said the Robot Report. That intuition and judgment are now extended across multiple machines at once for a system that claims to make each operator up to 300 percent more effective. It is designed to accelerate project execution, reduce costs and create jobs that are safer and higher paying than traditional equipment operation in the process. “It is not about trying to fully automate construction equipment,” Noah McGuinness, CTO, told the Robot Report. “Driving real change requires building a whole ecosystem of technology that is directly informed by rapid iteration and lessons from the field,” he added.
