Aconstruction project began earlier this year in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains to expand a critical roadway and replace an aging bridge to help lessen traffic congestion in a much-traveled part of the state.
Wright Brothers Construction Co., based in Charleston, Tenn., was awarded the contract to replace the Watauga River Bridge on N.C. Highway 105 by the state’s Department of Transportation (NCDOT) in November 2021. see WATAUGA page 28

The DOT has expanded its Every Day Counts (EDC) program from innovative infrastructure projects to tackling climate and safety. Seven projects were added to the list of 52 the department has supported in the decade-old federal initiative program.
The goal of the Obama-era DOT program Every Day Counts was to nudge states in using innovative strategies to update their transportation systems.
Every other year, the program comes out with a new list of projects it will support. The agency has expanded the program to include multiple transportation modes.

Repairs BeginAfter 21 Tornadoes SweepAcross Louisiana
After 21 tornadoes touched down in Louisiana over the course of 24 hours on Dec. 14, residents across this weather-battered state, who have contended with a litany of severe storms over the last few years, from major hurricanes to twisters, woke up the next morning to an eerily familiar scene.
WWNO Radio in New Orleans reported homes had shifted off their foundations, and roofs had blown away. People’s belongings were scattered across the street, downed power lines cut off roads, and linemen queued up to begin repairs, yet again.
The storms killed three people and injured dozens of other as a strong cold front carried a line of tornadoes, hail and heavy rain eastnortheast across the state. Near Shreveport, in Caddo Parish, a tornado took the lives of a mother and child. Farther south, another storm caused a fatality in the St. Charles Parish town of Killoma, west of New Orleans.
Crews Get to Work to Repair New Iberia’s Damage
In the south-central Louisiana town of New Iberia, crews were brought in to pick up and remove debris from damaged areas, after an EF-2 tornado, with top winds of 135 mph, touched down there. In addition, power company crews were seen removing and replacing downed power lines, according to KLFY-TV in nearby Lafayette.
With a width of no more than 300 yds., the twister was on the ground for 10 minutes just before 11 a.m. Dec. 14, and traveled about 4.4 mi., the National Weather Service confirmed Dec. 16.
Fortunately, no deaths were reported in New Iberia, but Gov. John Bel Edwards, on a tour of the city Dec. 15, reported 16 injuries, one of which was serious, in Iberia Parish. In addition, the storms caused major structural harm throughout the area.
The multi-story medical arts building at Iberia Medical Center (IMC) took a direct hit from the tornado and suffered considerable damage, noted the Daily Iberian, the city’s news source.
“I will tell you we can be very thankful here in Iberia Parish that there was no loss of life,” Edwards said.
The governor flew in on a U.S. Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk Pilot helicopter from which he said he could see where the tornado started outside of Iberia Parish.
“The first thing we saw coming in from Baton Rouge [as] we were flying over some cane fields [was] tremendous debris, and you could follow [the path] of the debris right to the medical arts building,” he explained.
Despite the damage, the hospital was able to remain open and treat current and new patients.
“We had structural engineers look at the medical office building and they determined it is structurally sound,” said IMC CEO Dionne Victor. “We are [also] looking at other issues like fire safety. The hospital has had some damage, but nothing that has stopped us from being fully open.”
Lisa Landry, director of marketing of IMC, added that IMC’s north and main campuses had power, water pressure and were
fully functional 24 hours after the storm’s rampage.
In addition to the hospital, KLYF-TV reported major damage to a dentist’s office and the SouthportApartments in New Iberia took a heavy blow from the tornado. The apartment complex’s stairs had their railings ripped away and the roof was completely torn off.
Around town, several brick walls also collapsed.
Residents in an afflicted mobile home park in the Southport subdivision experienced their homes being lifted off the ground and thrown from their brick foundations.
Contractors Hope to Soon Begin Rebuild Efforts
Luis Cruz, a New Iberia contractor, told KLFY-TV that he did not know what he would face when he got the call for help at a home along Estate Drive.
“I really didn’t expect it to be that bad, [but] a whole roof is basically gone.”
He and his crew spent the entire day after the twisters struck cleaning up debris and placing tarps on the home’s roof in preparation for its reconstruction.
Cruz explained that they made good progress and hope to return when the family gets the green light from their insurance company for the rebuild to begin.
With more than 3,400 homes and businesses without power in the immediate aftermath of the tornado, CLECO Power spokesperson Fran Phoenix told the Lafayette TV station that crews worked nonstop to get customers’electricity restored.
By 5 p.m. on Dec. 15, she said, less than 400 customers were still without power.
New Orleans Suburbs Slammed by Large Twister
To the east, the Crescent City stayed under a tornado warning for much of the afternoon of Dec. 14, although the city itself ended up being spared from the storm’s wrath.
Instead, an EF-2 tornado moved through the New Orleans’ suburbs, south of the Mississippi River, before crossing the waterway and slamming into Arabi, a community that borders the city’s Lower Ninth Ward.
In Gretna, the storm ripped away a part of the roof of Joe Glorioso’s 114-year-old house on 9th Street, exposing the inside of his home to the pouring rain. By late the next morning, he had already cleared much of the house of furniture, piled outside on the curb. The home’s ceiling in one now-vacant room sagged with water.
“I’m in shock,” Glorioso told WWNO. “It’ll hit me, but it’s stuff we get through.”
Gretna Mayor Belinda Constant said about 30 structures in the city were destroyed, with hundreds more damaged by the powerful twister. Most of the destruction, she explained, was in the area between Fourth and Sixth streets on Gretna’s riverside.
Next door, in the city of Harvey, another New Orleans suburb,Alisha Lanier spent the morning raking up debris outside her home along with a contracting crew. She was there when the tornado hit.
“The barometric pressure dropped, and see REPAIRS page 20

NCDOTAccelerates TimelineforBuilding Hampstead Bypass
After a series of delays to the overall project, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has announced that construction of the second part of the Hampstead Bypass on U.S. Highway 17 near the southeast coast will now begin sooner than originally planned.
According to the state agency, the portion of the roadway from N.C. Highway 140, on the northeastern edge of Wilmington, to N.C. 210 in the town of Hampstead, is slated tobeginworkinthesummerof2025,ratherthantheoriginal start time in the fall of 2026.The corridor runs between New Hanover and Pender counties.
Recently, NCDOT and the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO) agreed to adjust this and several other projects in the draft 2024-2033 State Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP).
Construction on the first part of the 13-mi.-long Hampstead Bypass began in March, which will extend from N.C. 210 to north of Hampstead. Once both sections are complete, the bypass is expected to improve safety and relieve congestion in the area. It has a total estimated project cost of $429 million.
The often-controversial Hampstead Bypass is seen by NCDOT as the primary solution to ease the traffic that streams south on U.S. 17 toward Wilmington. Rapid growth in eastern Pender and northeastern New Hanover counties has added even more pressure to the coast-hugging national highway, which runs from Punta Gorda in southwest Florida to west of Washington, D.C.
Even with rapid growth in the last 10 years and more homes and schools on the way, U.S. 17 is still the only commercial road and travel route through the Hampstead area. More than 43,000 vehicles a day travel on the highway throughthecommunity, accordingtothelatesttrafficcounts.
It has not gone unnoticed by state transportation officials that Hampstead’s population grew by almost 72 percent between 2010 and 2020, and now has just over 7,000 residents.
Earlier improvements to the U.S. 17 corridor included a separate project from south of Washington Acres Road through Hampstead to Vista Lane. In the summer of 2018, a new alignment connection — now known as the Safe Passage Way — was built between Dan Owen Drive and Factory Road, according to NCDOT.
Three Other Wilmington Road Projects Adjusted
NCDOTandWMPOalsochangedtheproposedtimelines of other future projects in the Wilmington area:
ï An upgrade to the intersections of U.S. 76/Oleander Drive at Greenville Loop Road and Greenville Avenue has been accelerated with construction planned to begin in 2029.
ï Work to improve Front Street will start with acquisition of right of way in 2025 and construction in 2027.
ïAwideningofU.S.421/CarolinaBeachRoadfromN.C. 132/South College Road to Sanders Road, along with the construction of flyovers at U.S. 421 and N.C. 132, has been moved forward to 2027.
The state’s Board of Transportation likely will adopt the 2024-33 STIPin spring 2023, NCDOT said.

Upstate South Carolina Is Latest Site for NED Expansion
By Eric Olson CEG CONTRIBUTING EDITOR
National Equipment Dealers (NED), a heavy construction sales, full-service and rental company with branches in five Southern states, has recently expanded by opening a new location in the Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C., market.
The new facility, at 169 New Hope Drive in Wellford, between the two larger Upstate South Carolina cities, is conveniently situated off Interstate 85 just north of its intersection with U.S. Highway 29.
It becomes the fourth NED branch in the Palmetto State, joining those in Columbia, Charleston and Conway-Myrtle Beach, the latter of which came online in 2021 when NED bought the Richardson Service location there.
“If a company is looking to expand, as we did here in Wellford, we can go with a green system, which is essentially what we have here as this building was constructed especially for us,” said Richie Ambrose, NED’s South Carolina manager. “However, when possible, NED likes to partner with other companies that are already in the business. That gains people for us, which is more important than anything, as well as the locations themselves. In the Upstate, we were not capable of doing that, leading us to go with a new startup.”
Along with four other dealerships in North Carolina, the company now has expanded NED Carolinas to eight locations. The distributor also sells its many well-known lines of construction machinery and attachments in Texas, Georgia and Florida.
“We are the distributor for Hyundai construction products, Bell Trucks, both its articulated and track models, and Manitou machines, which are skid steers, compact track loaders and telehandlers,” Ambrose said. “We are also the dealers for Yanmar in this location as well as XCMG construction machines, the Dynapac compaction paving lines and those made by Sakai.”
The Wellford branch carries several other diverse lines like Lamtrac mulching products; Prinoth, a forestry mulching manufacturer; and Barko, makers of forestry handlers, according to Ambrose.
“So, we have a tremendous amount of capability that is spread throughout the Carolinas, specifically in South Carolina,” he added.
NED’s Roots in Region Go Back Years
Ambrose said the company’s decision to open the Wellford branch came after it had kept a presence in the Greenville-Spartanburg area for more than 25 years — back to its lineage with MAY Heavy Equipment.
“Although we have had resident technicians in the area, [this location] makes it more convenient for customers as far as parts and service availability,” he said. “The customers up
here have been great for us, and this is another way for us to continue to grow that base.”
NED’s new Wellford facility is approximately 12,000 sq. ft. in size, and features six service bays, including one for shipping and receiving parts.
Ambrose added that the parts space encompasses about 1,200 to 1,500 sq. ft., not including the outside areas where NED can keep ground engaging tools.
If the branch does not have a needed part in stock, he said, the store can easily get it from one of the other NED Carolinas locations.
“We share our equipment lines with nearly every other NED branch between the five states in which we operate,” Ambrose said. “That allows us to have more parts availability. In addition, many of the manufacturers we represent are based out of Atlanta, which is not too far from here. These factors, even amidst today’s difficulties in getting supplies, allow us to fully realize our parts availability for customers.”
To clean construction machines that come into the Wellford branch’s service bays, NED has installed a selfcontained wash-basin system that re-circulates water, he said, making the process environmentally conscious. It does so by separating the oil and dirt from the water, allowing proper disposal of the pollutants.
“There are settlement tanks inside the system that disperses the water through filters before it is reused,” he added. “It will introduce a little extra water to the process because you tend to lose some due to evaporation. The dirt settles out and the cannons shoot it back into the wash pan. After that, the soil is dumped into a hopper before we get rid of it safely.”
In late September, Ambrose counted 12 employees at NED’s new Upstate South Carolina branch, including three outside and three inside service technicians, with the rest made up of sales, parts and administrative personnel.
“NED, as a company, is known for its service more than anything — what I like to describe as our ‘effort’— and this facility is going to help us support that attitude,” he said.

OleMissDonationWillFurtherConstructionofNewBuilding
A longtime and generous supporter of the University of Mississippi in Oxford has stepped forward with a $200,000 gift commitment for the college’s new Patterson School of Accountancy building, the college announced Nov. 13.
“The Gertrude C. Ford Foundation is proud to support the nationally acclaimed Patterson School ofAccountancy,” said John C. Lewis, vice president of the foundation. “We are grateful to have an opportunity to help continue the strong legacy of this outstanding program.”
The Patterson School on the Ole Miss campus is ranked No. 8 in the nation, according to the college’s news service, and No. 1 among Southeastern Conference universities, marking the 10th consecutive year of top 10 rankings for the school.
The university’s growth in student enrollment is driving plans for the new academic home, projected to cost more than $70 million. To honor the gift, the Gertrude C. Ford Career Center will be part of the four-story facility featuring 100,000 sq. ft. of tiered auditoriums and classrooms, study areas, conference rooms, administrative and faculty office suites, and outdoor balconies and terraces.
New Accountancy Building Comes at ‘Critical Time’
Morris Stocks, an Ole Miss professor, and the Don Jones Chair of Accountancy, requested the support from the Ford Foundation.
“We have had a great relationship with Dr. Stocks over the years, so when he came to us, we wanted to help,” explained Stephen Sims, the foundation’s president. “We feel that the
Patterson School, one of the top schools, is very well known and respected.”
Stocks said it has been his privilege to work with the foundation for many years, adding that its board members “have directed long-term and generous philanthropy to the University of Mississippi, placing the Ford Foundation as one of the most significant benefactors in the university’s history.”
“This new facility comes at a critical time in the growth of the school. We believe that this magnificent, new structure, placed in one of the premier locations on campus, will help move us toward our goal of becoming the top accounting program in the country,” he continued.
When Sims reflects on his hopes for the long-range impact of the foundation’s gift, he points to the preparation offered students.
“We hope the Patterson School will turn out well-rounded, knowledgeable graduates with expertise,” he said. “All accounting is important in our society. We want these students to be well trained.”
Foundation’s Support Has Been Huge at Ole Miss
The Ford Foundation’s support will go toward Now & Ever: The Campaign for Ole Miss, a fundraising initiative to secure $1.5 billion in private gifts to strengthen the university for future generations, the school said. The foundation has provided more than $67.8 million to Mississippi’s Oxford and Medical Center campuses. The Ole Miss Student Union was recently renamed for Ford to honor that support.
This past summer, its $2.5 million gift to the Campaign for Children’s of Mississippi pushed the effort over its $100 million goal to $101.5 million. The philanthropic drive helped pay for a multi-story expansion of the state’s only children’s hospital that doubled the square footage devoted to pediatric care at the Medical Center in Jackson.
The foundation also committed $25 million to the Jim and Thomas Duff Center for Science and Technology Innovation, a STEM academic building under construction in the university’s Science District.
In addition, a major artery running through the Science District between University Avenue and All-American Drive, will be renamed Ford Way to honor the foundation’s donations to Ole Miss.
Besides being the location for the STEM building, it will include an area honoring Nobel Prize-winning author William Faulkner, an Ole Miss graduate, and the activities he performed in that part of campus. This pathway will bring together both science and Faulkner’s literary works in a way that honors their connection to the liberal arts.
The Ford Foundation contributed $25 million for the 88,000-sq.-ft. Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts, opened in 2022, and gifts to several other university initiatives, such as the Gertrude C. Ford Ballroom in The Inn at Ole Miss, the Daniel W. Jones, M.D. Chair For Faculty Support on the Oxford campus, the Suzan Thames Chair of Pediatrics at the MIND Center research clinic on the Medical Center campus, and land for Gertrude C. Ford Boulevard, providing a new north-south thoroughfare for the ever-growing Oxford-University of Mississippi community.
BlueRidgeParkwayBridgeBeingBuiltNearAsheville,N.C.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced Nov. 21 that construction on the first half of the new Blue Ridge Parkway bridge crossing over Interstate 26 near Asheville got under way with the first pier of the span erected in late October.
The Asheville Citizen Times reported that groundbreaking for the structure, near the French Broad River bridge in the mountainous western part of the state — between exits 33 and 37 on I-26 — began late last year when a footer was anchored 17 ft. into the ground.
The new bridge is being built as part of an I-26 widening project that started construction in 2019. NCDOT is looking to expand approximately 22 mi. of freeway in both Buncombe and Henderson counties from U.S. 25/Greenville Highway to the I-40 and I-240 interchange near Asheville.
The first half of the bridge, which will stretch to the edge of the current I-26 highway but not over it, is expected to be complete sometime between January and March, according to an estimate by Luke Middleton, a NCDOT resident engineer
Construction on the second half of the bridge cannot begin until the opposite side of the I-26 widening project is complete under
the bridge, he told the Citizen Times, as NCDOT will flip traffic to the other lane, ensuring bridge construction never takes place over freeway traffic. That switch would probably occur sometime between February and April, and Middleton made an educated guess that the bridge structure could be finished as early as the late summer of 2023.
At its tallest point, Middleton estimated that the bridge would be between 105- to 115-ft. tall. When complete, it will have two wider Blue Ridge Parkway lanes and a sidewalk and will not include a barrier between traffic and the sidewalk. Additionally, it will be stronger than the old bridge, but he told the Asheville newspaper that he could not give an estimated lifespan for it.
The widening project will not include an exit from I-26 onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, according to NCDOT.
Bridge Segments Trucked From N.C. Coast
VSL International, a Swiss infrastructure engineering firm building the bridge’s structure, began work on the site last June but will not see the work through to full completion, Middleton noted. Rather, another subcontractor will lay down a latex-modified con-
crete road, which he said is typical for bridges, and will diamond grind it to make driving smooth.
Manufacturing rebar and concrete sections of the bridge began in April 2021 at an off-site location across the state in Wilmington. Over the course of the work, those sections have been delivered to the side of the road in Asheville, before being lifted by a crane to a sand pit closer to the pier. Depending on the piece, it may then need to be flipped upright before it can be slotted into the correct spot on the pier or bridge, according to NCDOT.
To support the construction, temporary towers have been erected alongside the first pier, which will help support the bridge as it continues to expand outwards toward the road and the other pier.
Counterweights will keep the structure stable and balanced, Middleton noted. Their use will be essential when the segment lifter, a large machine that runs on a rail across the top of the bridge carrying and securing new sections of the span, is fully operational in December.
To reach the top of the roadway bridge, crews are using either a lift from the crane or a stairway made of scaffolding.
NCDOT to Keep Natural Area Safe
Environmental sensitivity played a major part in planning and building the bridge, according to David Uchiyama, a communications officer with the state transportation agency. He said NCDOT was working closely with the National Park Service (NPS), which maintains the Parkway, to design the bridge.
As part of the effort, NPS required NCDOT to restore as much of the natural environment as possible after the bridge is finished, he said.
“We’re talking down to the foot,” added Uchiyama.
As for the old bridge, which Middleton said is not in bad condition but is blocking the expansion project, no plans have yet been made for how to take it down. Whichever demolition process is chosen, it will not include explosives, he told the Asheville news source.
The only time either of the two roads may be closed during the entire construction is for the demolition of the old bridge, Middleton said, and even then, it would likely be a closure of only one direction and would happen at night.

She was safe, but a massive steel beam had impaled the roof of her house. Once she could get it out, she was confident she could get back up on her feet.
Keith Eccles had just finished repairing his Gretna home after Hurricane Ida dealt it a blow last year. An artist and art teacher at West Jefferson High School, the shed of his home had blown down the block, and the tornado ripped away his roof too.
He was thankful that neighbors had stepped in to help him move his paintings from his house to his studio next door after the worst of the storm passed, and that his family came out of the severe weather alive.
For the residents of Arabi in St. Bernard Parish, this is the second time in less than a year that a tornado has devastated the tiny community, WWNO reported.

He sheltered from the storm in the hallway, huddling with his family and pet dog. Their roof suffered damage, but he said everyone is in good spirits.
“We’re resilient people — we’ll be back,” he said.
State, Local Governments Will Pay to Rebuild
Despite all the tornado destruction across Louisiana, Gov. Edwards warned that the damage in the state was likely not bad enough for the state to qualify for funding from Washington, but he wanted taxpayers toknowlocalgovernmentsandthestatewill pick up the costs for repairs.
“At this point, we don’t think we will meet the requirements for assistance from the federal government,” he said during his tour of New Iberia. “We don’t have $8.2 billion worth of damage across the state or enough damage in [Iberia Parish]. So, this will be on the state and on the local government and I want to make sure people are aware of that.”

DOTAdds Seven More Projects ‘Every Day Counts’List
PROGRAM from page 1
In announcing the seven new projects in early December, the DOT said the program will focus more intently on traffic safety and emissions reduction. The expansion in types of projects reflects the national push for transportation infrastructure improvements as a result of the bi-partisan IIJA, according to the DOT.
The FHWA had in the past worked with state transportation agencies to zero-in on appropriate innovations. Collaborating with agencies such as the FTA and the FRA, the DOT was able to grow the program beyond just infrastructure.
“All the innovations in the past were chosen just with state transportation highway departments in mind,” said Stephanie Pollack, the acting administrator of the FHWA. “This set was chosen with a broader set of modes.”
Improvements to nighttime safety, a push for rural and tribal workforce development are among the latest innovations. So is an initiative to integrate greenhouse gas assessments into transportation planning.
Though its name is Every Day Counts, the program isn’t just about speeding up transportation innovation, according to Bloomberg News.
“It’s not just faster,” said Pollack in announcing this latest round of innovations. “The seven innovations were chosen to not just focus on faster project delivery, but the three big buckets — safety, sustainability and then equity and inclusion.”
The FHWA sits down with local governments and their transportation departments and stakeholders to choose each new set of projects. Previous rounds of the Every Day Counts program included technology to accelerate bridge construction and digital ticketing, according to Bloomberg.
The program’s shift to embrace other transportation modes comes as concerns about U.S. car dependence continue to grow.
EDC’s new project devoted to nighttime safety, for example, is designed to boost visibility for all users, including cyclists, pedestrians and transit riders.
Many of the projects are designed to help make the nation’s transit systems safer, greener and more equitable.
“We’re really excited about making this tool that’s been proven in the highway context available in all the different modes of transportation,” Pollack said.
This year’s innovations being promoted by the FHWA and the FTA will improve project delivery across highway, rail and transit agencies at the state and local level.
“Americans get the best value out of innovations in transportation when they are broadly shared among communities so that good ideas spread across the country,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “With today’s announcement, these innovations will be more rapidly deployed to save lives, protect taxpayer dollars, reduce carbon emissions and ensure more families, workers and businesses benefit.”
Showcasing Innovation
This latest round of the DOT’s Every Day Counts innovative projects:
•
Nighttime Visibility for Safety
Since the nighttime crash fatality rate is three times that of the daytime, enhancing visibility along corridors, intersections and pedestrian crossings helps reduce fatalities. This initiative promotes traffic control devices and properly
designed lighting to improve safety for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists and people who use public transportation and passenger rail services.
• Next-Generation Traffic Incident Management
More than six million crashes a year in the United States put responders and other vulnerable road users at risk. NextGeneration Traffic Incident Management programs promote emerging technologies such as emergency vehicle lighting and queue warning solutions. These and other tools can advance safety and operations to help keep crash responders safe and mitigate traffic impacts after a crash, according to the DOT.
• Integrating Greenhouse Gas Assessment and Reduction Targets in Transportation Planning
This initiative provides resources to help agencies, regardless of transportation mode, quantify greenhouse gases and set goals to decrease motor vehicle, construction and lifecycle emissions through planning and project development.
• Enhancing Performance with Internally Cured Concrete (EPIC)
Cracking in concrete is a limiting factor in achieving longterm concrete performance. Internal curing mitigates shrinkage cracking and has the potential to substantially extend the service life of concrete bridge decks, benefitting travel by motor vehicle and public transit, as well as enhancing the

performance of pavements and repairs.
• Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for Sustainable Project Delivery
Construction materials such as concrete and asphalt have environmental impacts during their life cycle, whether the transportation facility supports passenger vehicles, transit vehicles, or railroad cars. EPDs, which document those impacts, help states support procurement decisions and quantify embodied carbon reductions using life cycle assessments for sustainable pavements.
• Rethinking Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) in Design-Build
Many design-build contracts do not adequately provide opportunities for disadvantaged businesses. New practices are available to support the effective integration of program requirements to help small, disadvantaged businesses compete for design-build contracts for highway and transit projects.
• Strategic Workforce Development
The demand for highway workers is growing under the new investment of the IIJA, and emerging technologies require new skills. This innovation is being implemented by 32 states, with six of those states having institutionalized Strategic Workforce Development as the way to promote

The construction industry had 422,000 job openings in September, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors’analysis of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS).
JOLTS defines a job opening as any unfilled position for which an employer is actively recruiting. Industry job openings increased by 36,000 in September and were up 74,000 from a year ago.
Construction workers quit their jobs at a lower rate than they were laid off or discharged for the first time since February 2021.
“Given healthy Construction Backlog Indicator levels and elevated Construction Confidence Index readings, it is not

surprising that the number of available, unfilled construction jobs openings increased in September,” said ABC Chief EconomistAnirban Basu. “The No. 1 challenge for contractors continues to be securing sufficient numbers of skilled, motivated construction workers.
“Job openings across all industries increased in September, which means that the Federal Reserve won’t pivot away from its hawkish stance on inflation anytime soon,” said Basu.
“Rather, interest rates are likely to continue to rise as the Fed battles inflation. Firms focusing on infrastructure projects may continue to remain busy even if the economy ends upinadeeprecessionnextyear, duetoacombinationofcurrent backlog and the expectation of major public infrastructure spending.”

Program Focuses On Speed, Safety, Sustainability, Equity
careeropportunitiesintransportation.Acontinued focus on taking this nationwide will help stakeholders across the country improve their ability to identify, train, and place highway construction workers.
Innovative approaches will be informed by the DOT’s Memorandum of Understanding with the DOL to foster a diverse and skilled workforce to support infrastructure projects.
The focus will expand to rural and tribal communities to increase career opportunities.
“Many of the innovations announced as part of this forward-thinking program will help make the nation’s transit systems safer, greener and more equitable,” said Nuria Fernandez, the FTAadministrator. “We look forward to promoting the findings from these initiatives, from reducing greenhouse gas emissions to leveling the playing field for small businesses to compete for designbuild contracts, throughout the transit industry.”
History of Success
Every two years since 2011 FHWA has worked with state transportation depart-
ments, local governments, tribes, private industry and other stakeholders to identify a new set of innovations to champion that merit accelerated deployment.
The first six rounds of EDC have yielded severalinnovativeprojectdeliverytechnologies, including prefabricated bridge systems, design-build contracting, project bundling, e-construction (paperless contracting) and safety initiatives.
The program’s success is based largely on statesselectinginnovationstheywanttopursue.
The model identifies and rapidly deploys underutilized innovations to shorten the project delivery process, enhance roadway safety, reduce traffic congestion and integrate automation.
Proven innovations promoted through EDC facilitate efficiency at the state and local levels, saving time, money and resources, said the National Operations Center for Excellence (NOCOE).
After selecting EDC innovations, transportation leaders from across the country gather at regional summits to discuss and identifyopportunities.Itistherethatinnovationsthatbestfittheneedsoftheirrespective state transportation programs are imple-
mented.
Following the summits, states finalize their selection of innovations, establish performance goals and begin implementation.
NOCOEsaidtheEDCprogramhasmade a significant positive impact in accelerating the deployment of innovations and in building a culture of innovation within the transportation community.
“Since the inception of EDC, each state has used 19 or more of the 52 innovations promoted through Every Day Counts, and some states have adopted more than 40,” said the organization.
Many of these innovations have become mainstream practices across the country.
Accelerated Innovation Demonstration and StateTransportation Innovation Council Incentive programs administered by FHWA provide additional funding and resources to helpacceleratetheadoptionandstandardization of innovative technologies.
Previous innovations include Accelerated Bridge Construction, Road Diets, and Safe Transportation for Every Pedestrian (STEP).
The bridge construction program involved a suite of technologies that allow for accelerated construction of bridges, significantly reducing traffic delays and road
closures and often reducing project costs.
Since October 2010, transportation agencies have designed or constructed more than 2,500 replacement bridges using these technologies.
RoadDietsareinnovativeroadwayreconfigurations that can help improve safety on mixed-use streets by reducing vehicle speeds, calming traffic and freeing space for alternative modes of travel.
The plan typically converts an existing four-lane, undivided roadway segment to two through lanes and a center, two-way left-turn lane. Road diets can reduce collisions, increase mobility and access and improve a community’s quality of life.
The STEP program is the application of cost-effective countermeasures with known safety benefits to reduce pedestrian fatalities at crossing locations. With pedestrian fatalities a continued concern nationwide, this innovation is helping communities improve pedestrian safety and making crosswalks and pedestrians more visible to drivers.
“By advancing 21st-century solutions, the transportation community is making every day count, to ensure our roads and bridges are built better, faster and smarter and operated at peak efficiency,” said NOCOE.

Wright Brothers Works On $95M Watauga Bridge Project
It is the first step in a $95 million effort to widen 5.5 mi. of N.C. 105 and turn it into a divided four-lane highway from the small community of Foscoe north to the picturesque college town of Boone.
The first phase to build a longer, wider bridge over the mountain stream began in March when the contracting company began its clearing operations, which included removing a steep bank of vegetation, dirt and rock next to the structure.
The current 263-ft.-long Watauga River Bridge will be replaced in the final two phases to create a curved span 300 ft. in length and widened more than 100 ft. from the present span’s 35-ft.-width to match the expansion of N.C. 105. The highway’s two travel lanes will be widened to four with an added lane dedicated for turning west onto Broadstone Road and another for drivers to head east on Old Tweetsie Road.
Tanya Ball, project manager of Wright Brothers, explained that the $20.2 million bridge work at the intersection of N.C. 105 and Broadstone Road is a massive amount of work contained in a small footprint of less than a halfmile.
“Within the project there are several scopes of work: grading, drainage pipe, signals, walls and the bridge structure itself,” she said. “It will give better and safer access to the Boone and Foscoe communities because it is estimated that more than 20,000 vehicles travel through that area every day. With this large expansion, all the existing roadways and intersecting roads will be brought up to current NCDOT standards with better sight lines and wider shoulders.”
This short highway through the mountains, stretching just 17.7 mi. from Boone south to the community of Linville, is a critical route in what is known as North Carolina’s “High Country.”
In its announcement of the project last year, NCDOT noted its concern for the safety and mobility of motorists using N.C. 105, first opened in 1956. Additionally, the state
agency said the almost 67-year-old Watauga River Bridge has reached the end of its service life and needs a replacement.
The structure is slated to be open for traffic sometime in 2024.
Spectacular Sights Attract
Lots of Road Traffic
Heavy trucks rumbling up and over steep grades along the highway’s two lanes are part of the reason for the need to expand N.C. 105, but tourists traveling by car account for most of the traffic on the highway.
The reason so many people use the highway is simple: The terrain and the vistas in this part of the Tarheel State’s Blue Ridge Mountains are among the most visually stunning in the eastern United States.
The area includes both the highest peak and the deepest river valley east of the Mississippi River. Visitors stream to visit Mount Mitchell, with an elevation of 6,684 ft., and the spectacular Linville Gorge, with depths up to 3,000 ft. in places, during most months of the year.
The High Country also is noted for its cool spring and summer breezes, and the dazzling colors of the mountain forests in fall.
So it is that the region’s very popularity demands a constant vigil by NCDOT to make sure roads like N.C. 105 continue to be in top form.

Sustainability in the construction industry is being advancedbythepublicandprivatesectors.Governmentsare adoptingmoreclean-airregulationsatlocalandregionallevels and companies are adopting sustainability policies and asking partners to help them meet their targets.
Consequently, many manufacturers have already developed–orareintheprocessofdeveloping–electric-powered constructionequipmenttomeetincreasingemissionsregulations, provide efficiency improvements, and lower operating costs. All electric, electric/hydraulic, and battery-operated versions rival their diesel and gas counterparts in performance, notedJoelHoneyman, vicepresidentofglobalinnovation at Bobcat.
Changing Industry
“People say electric machines are not going to perform as well as a diesel machine,” Honeyman said. “That is simply not true. In many cases they can outperform them.
“Manypeoplearesousedtowhattheyhaveandareafraid of new technology. Some companies have been running diesel- and gas-powered equipment for 40, 50 years. Hydraulics have been on equipment for 80 years. Adjusting to an electric-powered machine is quite a paradigm shift.”
Future
“We see electric-powered technologies and their applications spilling into our industry,” said Honeyman. “Look at whatishappeningintheautoindustry.Teslahasreallydriven thebatteryelectricconceptandanentireindustryisshifting.”
Green construction technology is only getting better and smarter with new machine and equipment applications and opportunities, he added.
Among the many advantages of electrification, said Honeyman, are“noiseandvibrationreduction, instantaneous power and software features that are otherwise unavailable with a diesel engine and hydraulics.”
Matt Sagaser, director of innovation accelerated at Bobcat’s Acceleration Center, added that “the software features allow us to advance and accelerate the technology. We are doing it in a way that is more efficient and cost-effective, and beyond expectations from a power perspective. Overall, our electric innovations allow us to offer customers an experience they may not have previously imagined.
“Wecouldhaveveryeasilyremovedthedieselengineand replaced it with a battery. Instead, our innovation team, whichleadsthisproject, wantedtoseewhatotheradvantages we could achieve if we made it all electric and removed the hydraulics as well. That opened up a lot of possibilities.”
Honeyman and Sagaser will hold an Education Session –“Electrifying the Future: Get Plugged In” – at ConExpoCon/AGG 2023. They will examine the advantages of electric construction equipment beyond just being “green.”They also will discuss what an all-electric platform allows construction equipment manufacturers to do.

Blasting, Excavation Present Challenges for Contractor
WATAUGA from page 28
Bridge Site’s Terrain Presents Challenges
Before Wright Brothers started its work on the Watauga River Bridge project, Ball said she and the other engineers in the company at once realized the worksite’s terrain, so close to N.C. 105, would be the project’s biggest challenge.
“The existing topography had 60-ft.- to more than 80-ft.tall cut slopes hanging over the existing shoulders of the highway,” Ball said. “This requires us to flag the traffic as a stop-and-go operation while we excavate the upper sections of each cut. This has extended the timeline of the excavation but is the only way to keep the traveling public safe during construction.”
Another problem arose when Wright Brothers began to remove the hillside rock on the east side of the highway.
“The project was designed to have pre-split rock slopes at all the mountain cuts,” she said. “When our crews pioneered into the cut slopes, we realized the rock did not go to the top of the mountains. The dirt and soft rock above the pre-split caused design issues. The rock can be presplit at a steeper slope than the dirt or soft rock. This has resulted in additional design and right-ofway purchasing by NCDOT.”
The transportation agency is mitigating the future slide potential by installing soil nail walls with rock mesh or shotcrete facing in the areas of incompetent rock or dirt, she added.
“We also are proposing a boulder scape finish to the wall on Broadstone Road,” said Ball. “This finish blends well into the natural landscape of the surrounding mountains.”
So far, Wright Brothers has excavated the northern cut to an elevation that gives access to the slope stabilization crew and began excavation on the southern cut.
“Our subcontractor will install the slope protection from the top down to the excavated bench, then we will excavate that area more with the slope protection following each phase,” she said. “We intend to move the crews around to the three main cuts so this work will be continuous until we reach road grade. This work likely will take up to a year to complete.”
The cuts must be fully excavated, she added, before work can start on building the new Watauga River Bridge.
Two-Phased Bridge Replacement
Just feet from the junction of Broadstone Road and N.C. 105, Wright Brothers will not only perform the bridge replacement — both its demolition and reconstruction — but the roadway grading at the site as well.
The contractor will take down the bridge, built in 1955, based upon the structure’s original blueprints given to them by NCDOT.
“We are fortunate to be supplied with these plans for our demo planning,” Ball noted. “It is remarkable to see the hand drafted plans and the skill that was involved. The demo will occur at the beginning of the third year of the project in 2024.”
NCDOT designed the curved bridge to be erected with one interior bent.
The first phase will build the larger structure east of the current bridge and be wide enough to move the existing traffic onto it, Ball explained. Next, Wright Brothers will tear
down the old bridge and extend the width of the new structure in Phase Two. This approach keeps drivers moving across the Watauga River throughout the timeframe of the project.
She noted that each phase of the bridge construction will take one year to complete.
So far in 2022, Wright Brothers has employed about 20 people at the bridge site, in addition to the various subcontractor crews. During the bridge building and paving work in 2023 and 2024, Ball expects a total crew size of 35 folks.
She added that her company “is blessed” to have a team of North Carolina-based major scope subcontractors on hand, including Statesville’s Maymead for the asphalt paving; Ameritech Slope Constructors in Asheville for the wall and slope stabilization; Hamptonville’s Foothills Construction Services for the erosion and grassing; and MB Haynes, anAsheville electrical company, handling the signal work.
The beautiful Watauga River, from its headwaters only a
focused their attention on moving tons of earth and rock in 2022. Later, when the bridge construction begins, the company’s subcontractors will tackle other specialized tasks to get the job done.
“The project has approximately 150,000 cubic yards of unclassified excavation,” according to Ball. “We estimated nearly all of that would have to be mass blasted, [requiring] around 8,000 bore holes.”
When the bridge replacement gets going next year, she added, plans call for more than 1,200 ft. of storm drainage pipe; 8,700 tons of asphalt; 2,000 ft. of curb and gutter; 1.4 million lbs. of structural steel girders; 300,000 lbs. of reinforcing rebar; 815 ft. of 14-in. steel piles; and 1,400 cu. yds. of concrete.
Of course, all those materials and their use at the Watauga River Bridge crossing will mean Wright Brothers needs to bring in a variety of equipment and tools of all sizes, among them cranes, excavators and rock-drilling machines.
Ball said her company has utilized several Caterpillar machines on the project so far in 2022, including a D5N dozer, a D6T dozer, a 905H wheel loader and a 323F medium-sized excavator. In addition, it has a Link-Belt TCC-750 crane on site, as well as a Broce RC350 Broom and a Terex Reedrill model 345 drill.
Stowers Machinery, an eastern Tennessee equipment dealer with locations in Chattanooga, Crossville, East Knoxville, Sevierville, the TriCities and West Knoxville, is the provider for most of Wright Brothers’ fleet.
“Our structural steel girder erection also will require renting cranes of a large scale,” Ball explained.
When that time comes, Wright Brothers will turn to Crane & Rigging Corp., headquartered in Yadkinville, N.C., she said. The company also has High Country branches nearby in Blowing Rock and Asheville.
“We also rent various short-term equipment for the day-to-day operations, such as a water truck, pump or trailer,” Ball added.
Experienced Contractor
Wright Brothers has been performing largescale, heavy civil construction projects since 1961, when two brothers, James and Robert Wright, decided to borrow their father’s bulldozer and work together helping their neighbors dig out ponds.
few miles south of the bridge at Sugar Mountain, is an environmentally sensitive waterway throughout its 78-mi. path into eastern Tennessee. As such, Ball explained that Wright Brothers “is dedicated to conducting our construction activities in a non-invasive” manner.
“This project has plans and procedures set in place to minimize the impact and protect endangered species such as the Eastern Hellbender [the largest salamander species in North America],” she said. “The NCDOT also designed a biofiltration conveyance system that we are looking forward to building at the bridge site.”
Moving Tons of Material Requires Top Equipment
As might be imagined, Wright Construction’s crews have

Wirtgen W 100 Fi Spearheads New Machine Generation
At the beginning of this year Wirtgen celebrated the market launch of its completely redesigned generation of compact milling machines. Technologies from the F-series large milling machines have now been integrated in the W 100 Fi, W 120 Fi and W 130 Fi compact milling machines.
Wirtgen also will be showing another innovation at bauma 2022 — for the first time, compact class machines can be fitted with a comfort cabin. This not only increases the safety of machine operators, but also the comfort of their workplace, according to the manufacturer.
Cold Milling Machine With Environmentally Friendly Engine Technology
The front loaders with working widths of 3.3, 3.9 and 4.2 ft. feature the latest and currently most environmentally friendly engine technology compliant with EU Stage 5 / U.S. Tier IVFinal exhaust emission standards. The diesel engine delivers a rated output of 355 hp. (265 kW).
Wirtgen and John Deere have precisely tuned the torque characteristic of the engine to meet the specific needs of the cold milling process. The engine already delivers sufficient torque at engine speeds as low as 1,200 rpm, achieves maximum torque at 1,500 rpm and offers a very wide working speed range of 1,200 to 2,100 rpm. As a result, the machines use significantly less fuel, even when delivering the highest productivity and milling at the maximum depth of 13 in.
Mill Assist, WPT
Also onboard are the digital assistance systems Mill Assist, Wirtgen Performance Tracker (WPT) and the Level Pro Active leveling system, which have already delivered customer benefit in the F-series large milling machines. Now, customers can look forward to the benefits of high milling performance, maximum efficiency and clear documentation in the compact milling machine class.
Mill Assist for Increased Milling Efficiency
In automatic mode, Mill Assist selects the operating strategy with the most favorable balance between milling performance and operating costs. This increases milling performance while simultaneously reducing not only diesel fuel, water and pick consumption, but also CO₂ emissions.
Mill Assist automatically controls the engine speed and simultaneously provides a wide range of usable milling drum speeds for an enormous spectrum of applications. The low-speed range enables significant reductions in fuel consumption and minimizes pick wear. The upper speed range enables the achievement of an optimal milling pattern, even in the case of higher area performance rates.
The operator can additionally select one of three operating strategies for each milling job: “ECO”, “performance-optimized” or “milling pattern quality”. This makes it possible, for example, to pre-define the required milling pattern quality incrementally from coarse to very fine at the press of a button.
Wide Range of Applications, Maximum Flexibility
Compact dimensions and optimized machine weight for easy transportation predestine these machines for a multitude of different construction site scenarios. Whether on highways, main roads, parking lots or inner-city streets — these high-performance machines are ideal for a broad spectrum of applications.
Due to their outstanding productivity, they are ideal for surface layer rehabilitation and complete pavement removal on construction sites of all sizes. Due to the ability to quickly change the FCS milling drums with different pick spacings and working widths, the compact milling machines from Wirtgen also can be rapidly reconfigured on-site to adapt to changing applications.
Precise Leveling With LEVEL PRO ACTIVE
Already proven in the F-series large milling machines, the LEVELPROACTIVE leveling system has now been made available for the compact class milling machines. Developed by Wirtgen especially for cold milling machines, the leveling system features informative operating panels and is intuitive and easy to use.
All connected sensors and measured values are clearly displayed on the operating panel to make the work processes as efficient as possible. The system is fully integrated in the control system of the cold milling machine and, as essential machine functions are directly interconnected, provides a high level of automation.
The system also offers many automatic and additional functions that make the operator’s job easier, for instance, automatic lifting for driving over manhole covers.
Cockpit Also Available With Enclosed Cabin
The newly developed operator’s cabin is characterized by ergonomically designed control elements with high-quality haptics and maximum ease of operation. In addition to the slender wasp waist of the machine, up to five on-board cameras provide an ideal view of all important working areas.
The new 5-in. control screen in the multifunctional armrest displays all machine-relevant information. The access ladder to the cabin at the rear of the machine is fitted with an automatic height adjustment system. This assures that the machine operator can easily and safely access the platform in all working situations.
At bauma 2022, Wirtgen is showing another innovation in the compact milling machine class — a completely enclosed comfort cabin. It protects the operator against typical problems such as noise and dust on the construction site and provides ideal working conditions in all kinds of weather.

Road construction companies are equipped for the future with Vögele’s latest-generation SUPER 1900-5(i) and SUPER 2100-5(i) road pavers and AB 500 and AB 600 extending screeds.
Highway Class pavers are perfectly at home whether on highways or handling other demanding large-scale projects. The SUPER 1900-5(i) manages pave widths between 8.2 and 37.8 ft; the SUPER 2100-5(i) up to 46 ft.
Both Dash 5 pavers are convincing products featuring a flexible, modular system which takes particular account of economy and sustainability as well as of ease of use and process automation.
More Convenience, Safety for Users
Vögele has made user requirements a key focus of development, resulting in further optimization of the ErgoPlus operating concept which, with its touchscreen and smartphone shelf, delivers even greater convenience for digital road construction.
The new Paver Access Control (PAC) function enables Dash 5-generation pavers to be equipped for work on
the job site more quickly, more conveniently and more safely. The control unit positioned on the screed allows all the initial steps — such as switching on lights, starting the diesel engine, booting up the machine control system, putting up the hardtop and locking it in position, as well as lowering the screed — to be performed safely and conveniently from ground level.
This promotes safety and saves time, as the paver operator cannot forget to lock the hardtop in position and can start heating the screed as soon as he has arrived on the paver operator's platform.
The combination of PAC and Light Package Plus provides additional convenience and safety. The integrated lighting provides even illumination of the whole working area.As the lighting is permanently integrated in the hardtop design, it is not necessary to transport separate lights to the job site and fit them there.
Into Future With Automation
The automation of processes has been intensified in the SUPER 19005(i) and SUPER 2100-5(i) road pavers using assistance and control systems.
Process automation not only prevents paving errors, it considerably increases efficiency as well as paving quality. Examples of this are AutoSet Plus, already tried and tested in the market, as well as two new Niveltronic Plus functions, Assist and Edge Control.
TheAutoSet Plus feature of the Dash 5 generation simplifies handling even further and new functions have been added.
Niveltronic Plus Assist helps the paver operator pave the road accurately in predefined cross-sectional profiles. Paving parameters can be entered on the display and the progress of construction monitored accordingly.
Edge Control now also makes it possible to control screed width, as well as to steer along a tensioned wire. The physical reference is detected with the aid of a sonic sensor for this purpose. Measurement of screed width in the hydraulic cylinders delivers a precise position signal for what in future will be fully automatic screed width control on

Bobcat Launches Its Newest Lineup of Nine Light Compaction Machines
The full range of Bobcat light compaction products includes rammers, forward plates compactors, reversible plates compactors and trench rollers. The light compaction line can be used in a variety of settings and is designed to meet compaction requirements on nearly all job sites.
To meet the compaction demands of numerous industries and jobsite requirements, Bobcat has launched nine light compaction machines in North America.
“By adding light compaction machines to our current product offering, customers have a greater array of equipment options to help them accomplish more,” said Mike Ballweber, president, Bobcat Company NorthAmerica. “We know our customers work hard each and every day, and these machines give them even more versatility to do their best work.”
Solution for Every Compaction Job Site
The full range of Bobcat light compaction products includes rammers, forward plates compactors, reversible plates compactors and trench rollers. The light compaction line can be used in a variety of settings and is designed to meet compaction requirements on nearly all job sites.
The Bobcat light compaction lineup includes:
• Bobcat rammers (models R60P and R68P) are high-performance machines that are user-friendly and engineered to last. Highly efficient in confined work areas, Bobcat rammers reach places other equipment can’t. Directing all compaction power onto any target surface while maintaining optimal balance, Bobcat rammers are agile, precise and built to last.
• Three Bobcat forward plate compactors (models FP10.33, FP15.40, and FP15.50) are equipped with industryleading forward movement capabilities for great compaction results and less operator fatigue. While working with Bobcat’s forward plate compactors, operators will get quality performance with low fuel consumption.

ASVUnveilsYanmar-PoweredRT-50FeaturingMorePower
ASV Holdings Inc., a manufacturer of allpurpose and all-season compact track loaders and skid steers, introduces a new generation of the company’s RT-50 Posi-Track loader, now powered by a Yanmar engine.
The new machine boasts 53.8 hp, up a full 8 percent from the previous model. The repowered RT-50 also offers improved serviceability, allowing owners to have the Yanmar engine serviced at ASV dealers.
In addition to these benefits, the new RT50 features new comfort, visibility and performance features, elevating the RT-50 as one of the top compact track loaders in both performance and comfort in its class, according to the manufacturer.
The Yanmar-powered RT-50 provides construction-grade performance in a small package, and is ideally suited for work in tight spaces, such as for rental, landscaping, construction, snow clearing and more.
“We often hear from customers that our RT-50 is the perfect blend of performance and mobility. Now, with the additional horsepower and new convenience features, that performance factor is dialed to eleven,” said Buck Storlie, ASV Holdings Inc. product manager. “And that’s before even mentioning the world-renowned reliability of the new Yanmar engine.”
Power, Productivity
The repowered RT-50 features a more powerful new 53.8-hp Tier IV, 3-cylinder turbo charged Yanmar engine. The machine has a high tractive effort and exceptional pushing and digging power due to ASV’s Posi-Power system.
The compact track loader allows contractors to be more productive, with high performance due in part to a nimble 58.5-in. width, a 9.1-ft. lift height, a 1,400-lbs. rated operating capacity and a 7.1 mph top speed.
The RT-50’s industry standard quick attach fits a wide variety of attachments. New to the machine is an optional hydraulic quick attach that allows operators to change attachments from the comfort of the cab. The loader’s compact size allows it to be conveniently towed behind a 1/2-ton pickup truck, a fact that makes its performance capabilities even more impressive, the manufacturer said.
Variable auxiliary hydraulic flow comes standard, and the machine can operate efficiently at a high auxiliary circuit flow rate, powered by 13.3-gpm of pump capacity and 3,000 psi of system pressure.
ASV eliminates labor-intensive belt servicing through the use of a direct drive pump. This, along with the machine’s large line sizes and hydraulic coolers, transfers more flow and pressure directly to the attachment to help prevent power loss.
The RT-50 is tested to operate at full load
100 percent of the time in ambient temperatures from -40 F up to 118 F. This product is a highly efficient cooling system that allows operators to get more out of their machine.
Serviceability, Reliability
The RT-50’s Yanmar engine can be serviced at ASV dealers. The ability to maintain the engine through ASV’s network of dealers gives customers more convenient options when engine maintenance is required on a Yanmar engine already renowned for its longevity.
ASV designed the RT-50 so operators can spend less time servicing it and more time getting work done. Its rear-tilting hood offers easy access to maintenance points, including filters, oil and fuel tank reservoirs, hydraulic and water separator drains and the battery.
The compact track loader is built with a
heavy-duty frame, drive table and axles. The RT-50 features new wiring harness routing for additional durability. The drive hose routing and chassis sealing are designed for reduced rubbing, creating fewer line breaks and boosting hose longevity. Metal-face seals on the front and back ensure the drive hubs do not require maintenance for the life of the machine. An optional bumper or bumper and limb riser can be added for additional hood protection in tough applications, such as rental or brush cutting.
ASV backs up its promise of reliability with a 2-year, 2,000-hour warranty. The warranty includes a no-derailment guarantee and covers the tracks for the entire warranty period.
Comfort, Ease of Operation
The repowered RT-50 brings brand new
comfort features to its compact cab. A single-sided lap bar makes entry and exit easier and provides operators with more hip room. Partially adjustable armrests and a tall cab improves comfort for operators of different sizes. The pressurized cab option also provides a cleaner in-cab environment.
Optional all-weather cabs include heat and air conditioning. ASV also offers additional comfort features, including a cup holder, phone mount and DC outlet.
A new 4.3-in. color display and standard hydraulic joystick controls puts full command of the machine at the operator’s fingertips. Plus, a new drive transmission allows for more precise power and fine-tuned operation.
The machine also includes visibility improvements over its predecessor. A new frameless front door includes floor-to-ceiling glass area, allowing operators to better see their work and attachments. The cab’s large side and rear windows provide additional lines of sight. This is further improved by the bright rear LED light and adjustable front pedestal lighting. An optional backup camera is available to replace the standard rearview mirror for additional convenience and visibility.
Posi-Track Benefits
ASV designs its Posi-Track and skid-steer loaders independently to provide customers with the highest performance from each machine. The RT-50’s dedicated frame results in a 14.4-in, ground clearance, higher than any walk-behind or stand-on loader, as well as many larger machines. The unit can travel over rocks, logs, stumps and other obstacles with less risk of getting hung up, according to the manufacturer.
ASV’s Posi-Track system features a flexible track and an open-rail and internal positive drive-sprocket undercarriage, allowing for greater traction, longer wear life and faster, more convenient undercarriage cleaning. Posi-Track loaders also have a high number of ground contact points, spreading the machine’s weight evenly. As a result, the RT-50 features an industry-low 3.0 psi ground pressure, reducing the risk of damage to turf.
Optional smooth turf tracks make the machine even more desirable for use on sensitive turf by minimizing risk of damage. The low ground pressure leads to better flotation and traction on steep, slippery and wet ground. It also enhances control and pushing capabilities. The wide, flexible track maintains more contact with the ground than other designs, helping to virtually eliminate the risk of track derailment.

John Deere Unveils G-Tier Compact Wheel Loader Models
John Deere is building upon its lineup of compact equipment by expanding its performance tiering strategy with three new models of compact wheel loaders.
The new G-tier models, including the new 184 G-tier, and the 204 G-tier and 304 G-tier machines, were designed to include proven capabilities and are ideal for customers in need of a dependable machine to complete everyday tasks, according to the manufacturer.
The G-tier compact wheel loader models also are practically equipped, providing proven capabilities with the reliability and ruggedness customers expect from John Deere machines.
“As we learned from launching our performance tiering strategy on our utility loader line-up last year, customer’s needs are unique and they require personalized solutions to meet their diverse set of tasks,” said Luke Gribble, solutions marketing manager, JohnDeereConstructionandForestryDivision.
“That’s why we chose to expand our performance tiering strategy with the introduction of the G-tier compact wheel loader models. These machines are not only rugged, but they boast simple and intuitive machine controls that are a great fit for operators of all experience levels, while also offering options that promote operator comfort and productivity.”
The 184, 204 and 304 G-tier compact wheel loaders provide solutions for customers in applications such as landscaping, agriculture, snow removal, site development and rental without sacrificing the world-class John Deere quality, the manufacturer said.
The G-tier models offer optimal performance with lower maintenance costs. With convenience and productivity top of mind, these easy-to-operate models come standard with limited slip differential, which automatically engages if one wheel loses traction, providing enhanced safety for the operator and the machine. The optional ride-control reduces spillage from the bucket when traveling over rough terrain, reducing job site clean-up, and improving ride quality for the operator and also can be set to engage and disengage at certain speeds.
Featured on all G-tier models, the forward-thinking cab design is offered in both a canopy or enclosed cab configuration, giving operators flexibility when working in a variety of different geographies. Built with operator visibility in mind, the redesigned enclosed cab features a frameless, fully glass door, floor-to-ceiling front windshield and remounted machine display, providing a clear line of sight to machine surroundings. The right-side full glass window also swings out 180 degrees to further enhance overall visibility for the operator.
Additional features include an adjustable steering column, slip-resistant steps and an optional LED lighting package. The spacious cab includes amenities such as improved air conditioning systems and ergonomic low-effort controls (when compared to John Deere L Series compact wheel loaders) to keep operators comfortable during a long shift.
All G-tier models offer enhanced serviceability features such as ground-level service and increased capacity fuel tanks to help simplify daily maintenance, keeping machines up and running on the job. This allows operators to spend more time completing the tasks at hand, rather than performing on-site repairs or maintenance. The strategically placed cooling package minimizes contamination from debris build-up, optimizing efficiency and reducing cleanout time (when compared to John Deere L Series compact wheel loaders).
The smaller G-tier models, including the
184 G-tier and 204 G-tier, were designed to provide customers with a rugged, compact design helping the operator maneuver within the tightest areas while maintaining complete control of the machine. With a canopy height of 8 in. and 5 ft. 10 in. in width, these machines are nimble enough to fit through smaller barn door openings or other smaller areas, making them an ideal solution for job sites of all sizes.
The new 0.9- cu. yd. bucket is optimally sized that pairs with the 184 G-tier and 204 G-tier and can be attached to either a QuikTatch or hook-style coupler.
The largest of the three new models, the 304 G-tier, delivers productivity enhancements while also retaining many of its previous features that result in higher productivity (when compared to John Deere L Series compact wheel loaders), especially in applications such as site development, roadbuilding, and snow removal.
In response to customer feedback, the
travel speed of the 304 G-tier has increased to 18.6 mph from 12 mph, seen on the 304L model. This enhancement allows the machine to accomplish tasks and move around job sites in less time. The design of the 304 G-tier offers improved operator visibility (when compared to John Deere L Series compact wheel loaders) and overall machine stability with the increased machine size, which is now measured at 8 ft. 8 in. tall with cab and 6 ft. 5 in. wide. This compact wheel loader model also comes equipped with an optional attachment assist package, including proportional mini-joystick 3rd function control with detent, combined creep control & throttle lock, and integrated electrical attachment controls (3Pin).
The John Deere 184, 204, and 304 G-tier compact wheel loaders are now available for purchase in the United States and Canada.

HitachiZX50U-5NMini-ExcavatorOffersFull-SizeFeatures
Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas Inc. (HCMA) announced the arrival of the ZX50U-5N excavator, a compact machine with full-size features.
With its reduced tail-swing design, the compact, yet powerful, 10,560-lb. (4,790-kg) ZX50U-5N is perfect for working in congested areas. An independent swing boom and 360-degree rotation let you set up and work almost anywhere. Plus, virtually unlimited visibility and precise control make it a great tool for excavating around existing utilities.
This excavator is a smart choice for trenching, excavating, loading trucks and other tasks in wide-open spaces, according to the manufacturer.
The ZX50U-5N offers plenty of height and reach to get up and over truck sideboards with a maximum reach of 19 ft. 7 in. (5.96 m). It also provides a maximum dig depth of 11 ft. 7 in. (3.53 m).Abackfill blade allows the excavator to fill or grade while an optional all-hydraulic blade angles 25 degrees left or right, for even more efficient grading and backfilling.
Compact excavators are commonly used as tool carriers with a wide range of attachments increasing job site versatility. A standard quick-coupler-equipped, boommounted auxiliary line makes attachment hookup on the ZX50U-5N a snap.An auxiliary function lever (AFL) is available with an analog switch, trigger switch and horn for running attachments such as a breaker or an attachment with swing.
The ZX50U-5N allows the engine speed to be matched to the job with power/economy work modes, which are usually only available on larger excavator models.
The ZX50U-5N allows the engine speed to be matched to the job with power/economy work modes, which are usually only available on larger excavator models. The power mode provides higher engine speeds for most general digging work, while the economy mode reduces engine speed for lighter digging jobs. This results in lower noise and decreased fuel consumption.
The excavator also uses the Hitachi Triple H (HHH)
hydraulic system, which enables combined operations by adjusting the optimal flow rate for all actuators. This gives the operator the freedom to provide simultaneous control inputs with no impact on machine performance.
A Tier IV Final compliant, direct-injected Yanmar engine produces 36.3 net hp (27.1 kW) while remaining fuel efficient and impressively quiet. The engine provides a high torque level for more pull-through power.
The ZX50U-5N offers plenty of height and reach to get up and over truck sideboards with a maximum reach of 19 ft. 7 in. (5.96 m). It also provides a maximum dig depth of 11 ft. 7 in. (3.53 m).
Designed for Comfort
Just because the ZX50U-5N can squeeze into a tight space doesn’t mean the operator should. A spacious operator station has a wide entryway. Swing boom and foldable travel pedals are positioned where they are easy to operate yet allow plenty of foot room.
Ergonomic short-throw hydraulic pilot control levers provide smooth, predictable low-effort fingertip operation to reduce operator fatigue. To suit operator preference and increase productivity, control patterns can be quickly switched from backhoe- to excavator-style controls with a control-pattern selector located in a compartment beneath the seat.
An enhanced 3.5-in. LCD monitor keeps the operator informed of vital information while allowing fingertip control of several functions, including auto-shutdown and power/economy modes.
Comfort inside the spacious cab has been maximized with an automatic, high velocity, bi-level climate-control system with automotive-style adjustable louvers to help keep the glass clear.
Durability Built In
The ZX50U-5N is built to the same durability standards as larger Hitachi excavators. Oil-impregnated HN bushings are used on the boom, arm and bucket joints for increased durability. Heavy-duty X-frames provide a rock-solid base that resists material and dirt buildup. A single-pin swing post increases the structural integrity of the digging components.
The rubber tracks on the ZX50U-5N feature a unique steel core that resists cracking. Large-diameter drive sprockets and track idlers further increase undercarriage durability.
A V-shaped cylinder guard provides added protection to the boom cylinder. To prevent damage to the upper structure, a D-section frame skirt improves upward impact resistance by 20 percent over previous models, according to the manufacturer.
Maintenance Made Easy
Compact machines can be more challenging to maintain, but not with the ZX50U-5N. A hinged door provides wide-open access to the side-by-side oil cooler and radiator core for easier cleanout. Routine checks, such as engine oil level, are quickly accomplished from ground level. A hydraulic fluid sight gauge and see-through coolant reservoir allow the operator to check at a glance.
Adjusting proper track tension only requires a grease gun and a wrench. A large fuel tank, 500- and 2,000-hour engine and hydraulic oil service, and 500-hour greasing intervals enable these excavators to work long hours between scheduled service intervals.
The operator station tilts forward 50 degrees, simplifying access to the swing motor, hydraulic control valve, engine starter motor and alternator.
To reduce the cost of repair, the traditional curved glass used in the cab has been exchanged with more easily obtainable flat glass.

Kobelco Increases Performance With Next-Gen SK45SRX-7
Kobelco Construction Machinery USA recently introduced the new SK45SRX-7 mini-excavator model for North America.
The next-generation SK45SRX-7 delivers increased performance and productivity from the previous model and follows the Kobelco Performance X Design concept for enhanced design and operator comfort. This reinforces the Kobelco continued commitment to design the smaller machines with the same quality, feel and comfort as the larger excavator models, the manufacturer said.
The new SK45SRX-7 weighs in at 10,030 lbs. with canopy and 10,300 lbs. with cab and has a 37 hp Yanmar Tier IV final diesel engine.
Max digging height with the standard arm is 18 ft. 10 in., max reach at ground level is 18 ft. 8 in., max dig depth is 11 ft. 3 in. and working width is 6 ft. 5 in.
Performance is key to mini-excavator operators, particularly when project deadlines are tight. The all-new SK45SRX-7 benefits from improved hydraulic performance when compared to the previous 6E series. The new hydraulic system shortens the digging cycle time by up to 7 percent, and this high performance can be maintained without reducing speed, even with a heavy load or when travelling up a slope. In addition, redesigned travel motors increase the travel speed by up to 5 percent.
Other benefits of the new hydraulic system include smoother operation and improved levelling performance.
The integrated flow pump system enables operators to harness extra output from the third pump, which otherwise powers the swing and dozer circuit. This additional output is directed to the arm and boom for added power when digging, resulting in a fast and smooth raising operation, even with heavy loads.
Like all Kobelco short radius (SR) machines, the SK45SRX-7 features a compact tail swing for operation in restricted spaces, such as on urban or residential job sites, allowing for a smaller working footprint. The standard arm is 5 ft. 1 in. and comes with a thumb bracket pre-installed.
A two-way dozer blade with float comes standard and the unique blade design ensures the earth always falls forward and not behind the blade when dozing, meaning that only one pass is usually needed and this saves time on the job site.
Inside the cabin, the dozer can be controlled by the ergonomically designed lever, which is easier to grip, and the first and second speed switches have been repositioned to improve maneuverability. A four-way (power angle) dozer blade with float also is available as an option.
Durability and reliability of the SK4SRX7 is assured through reinforced construction.
The boom, arm and swing bracket all have large cross-section segments for added attachment strength, and the bolt-tightened pins firmly lock the boom to prevent the boom top from opening laterally. The bucket
features a cast-iron idler link and the box construction dozer supports provide greater strength.
The mini-excavator line now comes with a standard three-year or 3,000-hour warran-
ty. Despite its compact size, the SK45SRX-7 also follows the same “Performance meets Design” concept as previously released on the SK75SR-7, SK85CS-7, SK140SR-7 and ED160BR-7 models. The -7 series maximizes performance, operator comfort and provides more standard features than ever before, according to the manufacturer.
A newly designed cabin provides improved ergonomics to enable the operator to move the control levers horizontally without twisting their wrist, and the enlarged wrist rests keep the operator’s forearms in position, reducing fatigue and allowing for a stable operation.
The automatic climate control (on cab models), smartphone holder (Bluetooth handsfree-enabled), USB/AUX port, DAB+ Radio, cup holder and coat hook provide extra comfort during long hours of operation.
A new color display is now standard and provides easy access to operating history, maintenance cycle and fuel and water temperature gauges. It also can be used to adjust the hydraulic oil flow to the attachments. When in energy conservation mode, the SK45SRX-7 adapts S-mode to enable 26 percent less fuel consumption when compared with H-mode, and an auto-deceleration switch is installed as standard.
The window on the right side of the cab can be opened and closed both forwards and backwards to facilitate ventilation and make it easier to hear ground workers when required.
In terms of operator safety, the highstrength cab/canopy meets ROPS, TOPS and OPG Level 1 (top guard) standards, and new LED work lights are mounted on the boom, top front, and left side of the cab from the factory. Mesh type front and top cab guards are available as options. The wiper mount also has been moved to the upper right of the cab support and the skylight opening has been enlarged to improve operator visibility of the job site.
When it comes to cabin noise, Kobelco’s integrated noise and dust reduction cooling system (iNDr), usually seen in its heavier machines, promotes low noise as well as exceptional engine cooling, enhanced reliability, minimal machine downtime and a more comfortable working environment. The iNDr filter has a high-density mesh of 30 lines per inch to collect dust and prevent it from clogging the radiators.
The SK45SRX-7 also offers easy access to the engine compartment, promoting easy daily maintenance that reduces time for inspection and cleaning.

Takeuchi Unveils TB335R Short Tail Swing Excavator
Takeuchi has added the new generation TB335R short tail swing compact excavator to its TB300 Series.
This excavator features a sophisticated interior and exterior design as well as enhanced functions that provide greater performance and peace of mind, according to the manufacturer.
“The TB335R’s short tail swing design results in a rear overhang of only 3.1 in. over the tracks, making it ideal for working in tight or confined spaces,” said David Caldwell, national product manager of Takeuchi. “It also provides outstanding stability rarely found in a short tail swing machine, along with smooth, intuitive controls that help operators tackle tough jobs with ease.”
The cab model TB335R has an operating weight of 8,310 lbs. (3,770 kgs.), a maximum bucket breakout force of 9,127 lbs. (40.6 kN) and a maximum arm digging force of 4,290 lbs. (19.1 kN). The excavator is powered by an EPA Tier IV/ EU Stage V emission-compliant engine delivering 24.4 hp (18.2 kW) and a maximum torque of 70.6 ft-lbs. (95.8 Nm).
The TB335R offers two working modes — standard and ECO — allowing operators to match the mode to the task at hand, choosing more power or fuel savings as desired.
Offering a wide range of advanced features, the TB335R’s spacious cab includes a 7.0-in.
touchscreen, multi-function color display. Canopy models offer a 4.3-in., high-definition, multi-function display. Cab models also feature air conditioner, heat/defrost, windshield wiper and washer, skylight with sunshade and AM/FM radio with Bluetooth technology. Both cab and canopy models have low-effort, pilotoperated joystick controls, a deluxe high-back suspension seat with head rest and retractable seat belt to keep operators comfortable and productive.
The Takeuchi Fleet Management (TFM) telematics system is standard on the TB335R during the warranty period. With TFM, owners and operators can remotely connect to their Takeuchi track loaders and excavators. TFM delivers alerts and machine information such as location, utilization, performance and maintenance status, as well as insights into how and where equipment is being operated.
“Takeuchi is committed to providing the North American market with equipment that offers unmatched reliability and operator comfort as well as the latest technology,” Caldwell said. “The TB335R is a machine that exemplifies that commitment by delivering unmatched performance, excellent serviceability and great value.”

JM Wood Holds Final Sale of 2022 in Montgomery,Ala.
The 2022 auctioning year came to a close for JM Wood Auction on Dec. 6 and 7 at the company’s Montgomery, Ala., headquarters facility. This auction rounded out another strong year and officially starts the company’s year-long 50th anniversary celebration for 2023.
More than 2,000 machines and trucks were sold over the two-day event. Featured sellers included Alabama Power Company, Brasfield and Gorrie, Howard Sheppard, Southeastern Site, Scott Bridge Company, Waites Construction and more than 200 other sellers.
Inspecting machines is serious business for Steve McDonald (L) of McDonald Lumber Company, Clarkrange, Tenn., and Billy Joe Wilson of 84 Limestone, Monterey, Tenn. These two have been buying and selling at auctions for decades.
December gross sales were over $50,000,000, making this the largest fourth quarter December auction in JMWoods’49 years. More than 72 percent of the bids received were online.
Sparks Energy sold 158 machines and trucks that were located offsite at its facility in Decatur, Ala.
“Online bidding was as strong as we can remember for any December auction,” said Bryant Wood. “We have one of the strongest online bidding platforms out there with preapproved bidders ready to buy.”
Next up will be March 21 to 24 for JM Woods’ 50th Anniversary Auction in Montgomery, Ala. CEG

Ritchie Shows Rise of Compact Earthmoving Equipment
With its November Market Trends Report, Ritchie Bros. takes a closer look at sales of earthmoving equipment in North America, including excavators, dozers, wheel loaders, skid steers and more.
One of the main trends the company is seeing is the continued rise in popularity of compact earthmoving equipment. A perfect example of this can be seen through U.S. excavator sales, where large unit volumes are down significantly in 2022, while mini excavator sales have increased.
“We have been selling construction equipment for than 60 years and compact equipment has never been more popular,” said Doug Olive, senior vice president, Ritchie Bros.
“Today, manufacturers make small and medium earthmoving equipment so much more powerful, and as a result we are seeing a lot more compact items on job sites around the world and at our auctions. However, there are still many jobs that require the full power of a Cat D11Tor John Deere 870G — so don’t worry, big equipment still has a big role to play.”
In the United States, while large excavator volumes are down, prices are up. Excavator prices also are on the rise in Canada, while volumes decline. Meanwhile, volumes and
prices for mini excavators in the United States and Canada have both increased in 2022.
Looking at wheel loaders and dozer sales, we see similar trends, especially in the United States. In the United States, both have seen price declines in Q3, while smaller assets like loader backhoes and skid steer loaders have increased in price. In Canada, with smaller overall volumes, pricing for dozers and wheel loaders are still seeing a slight uptick this year, while compact equipment like multi-terrain and skid steer loaders have experienced more substantial increases.
“Used small and medium earthmoving equipment volumes sold through dealers and other retail channels were down almost 40 percent vs the prior year, while prices continued to rise, increasing a further 2 percent in October,” added Doug Rusch, managing director of Rouse Sales. “Used earthmoving equipment trading through retail channels is now selling for 33 percent more than pre-pandemic levels.”
After the main feature on earthmoving equipment, Ritchie Bros. turns to individual industry indexes. While all indexes show
increased pricing over the same time last year, month over month changes continue to decline since peak pricing earlier this year.
In the United States, Ritchie Bros.’ mixadjusted price indexes for the three months ending Oct. 31, 2022, show truck tractor prices are up approximately 2 percent compared to the same time period last year, but down 13 percent compared to the three months ending Dec. 31, 2021. Meanwhile, large and medium earthmoving equipment prices are currently up 4 percent and 2 per-
cent respectively compared to the same time period last year, however that is down 1 percent and 6 percent compared the three months ending Dec. 31, 2021.
Vocational trucks are up 1 percent YOY (down 7 percent since Dec. 2021) and aerial up 2 percent (down 5 percent since Dec. 2021).
In Canada, Ritchie Bros.’ mixadjusted price indexes for the three months ending October 31, 2022, show truck tractor prices are up approximately 13 percent compared to the same time period last year, and flat compared to the three months ending Dec. 31, 2021.
Meanwhile, large and medium earthmoving equipment prices are currently up 9 percent and 6 percent respectively compared to the same time period last year, however that is down 7 percent and 2 percent compared the three months ending Dec. 31, 2021.
Vocational trucks are up 5 percent YOY (flat compared to December 2021) and aerial up 2 percent (down 2 percent since December 2021).
