By Eric Olson
CEG CONTRIBUTING EDITOR
On a recent fall afternoon in Winston-Salem, N.C., full of sunshine, cool temperatures and falling leaves, venerable old Bowman Gray Stadium, home to college football games for nearby Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), was the site of a refurbishment project not normally associated with a gridiron venue.
So, many people may be surprised to learn that the work happening on this day was not to the stadium or the playing surface; rather, paving crews were replacing the asphalt track around the field for Bowman Gray’s NASCAR-sanctioned short-race track.
In fact, races have been held at the stadium’s quarter-mile track since 1949, 12 years after Bowman Gray was built as a public works project during the Great Depression. Since that time, despite its rich football history — besides hosting WSSU Rams games, it once was the home field for two high school teams, Wake Forest University and even NFL exhibition contests — the stadium also is referred to as “NASCAR’s longest-running weekly racetrack.”
The asphalt replacement was part of a multi-million-dollar renovation of the 17,000-seat stadium complex that first began in 2020.
To resurface the racetrack, the city of Winston-Salem, Bowman Gray’s owner, hired Ruston Paving Co. Inc., with locations in Greensboro and Durham.
But Ruston also is a trusted name in its home state of New York, where it was founded in 1943. Based in Syracuse, the company today has six fully staffed branch offices across three states, according to Mark Rogers, Ruston’s regional manager in North Carolina, including locations in Rochester and Watertown, N.Y., northern Virginia and in Richmond.
Among the company’s specialties are asphalt paving, repair and, increasingly, full-depth reclamation.
After 27 years with Ruston, though, Rogers admitted he had never worked on resurfacing a racetrack at a football stadium before the Bowman Gray project.
Rogers said that Ruston’s crews were doing the final lift of the stadium’s asphalt track.
“We milled off 1½ inches and sent it back to the Sharpe Bros. asphalt plant [in Greensboro] for recycling and put in another 1½ inches of new asphalt in its place,” he said, noting that Ruston had approximately 20 people doing the work.

RUSTON from page 39
Most were from the Greensboro office, although a few members of the crew were brought in to help from Durham.
Of course, asphalt replacement is demanding work, but Ruston Paving chooses to use Vögele pavers, and rollers made by Sakai and Hamm, Rogers said, that make the process a smooth one for its crews.
At Bowman Gray, Ruston employed its Vögele pavers to do the job, with an extra machine waiting in the wings, if needed. That equipment, as well as the Sakai and Hamm rollers, all came from James River Equipment, with 13 locations in North Carolina, including one in Greensboro.
“We have been using Vögele for probably 10 years and I would say we have about a dozen of them in our fleet right now,” Rogers said. “We have found them to be the best on the market and they are what our people enjoy using. There is a lot of automation with the Vögeles — their electronics make the job easier for us.”
He also noted that Ruston feels comfortable using James River Equipment, noted for its quick response and outstanding service, because the dealer works well with the paving company.
“We have found that we can always get them on the phone when we need to. They offer plenty of support when we have issues or are just getting started on a project.” Racetrack Rehab More Complex Than Usual
The goal of the Bowman Gray track renovation was not simply removing and replacing old pavement, Rogers said, but something a bit more complex.
“With it being a racecar track, we are going for smoothness and proper densities, and we are trying to have all our thicknesses the same to give the drivers the best possible surface for them to run on,” he said. “We did so by milling it off with a lot of automation and checking, as well as going back over it to make it just as even as possible.
With the automation on the Vögele machines, though, he said the operator can set the paver to keep a certain depth, or elevation.
“On this racetrack, because the slope changes so much, we could not set the automation to the same slope all the way around, so we are trying to keep it to a constant thickness,” Rogers said, adding the track’s corners have approximately a three percent slope while the straightaways slopes were a little under two percent. “But with that, we had to make sure it is a nice, smooth grade when we milled it out earlier in the week.”
Ruston Paving Sports Large Portfolio of Work
The Winston-Salem job is just one of Ruston Paving’s approximately 1,000 paving projects each year, according to Rogers. The firm typically performs a great deal of commercial rehab work, in addition to paving an extensive list of shopping centers, business parks and subdivisions.
He added that Ruston repairs “the failed areas” at retail and business parking lots and also mills them to create whole new surfaces over the rest of the area for its clients. In general, he said, the company takes on projects that require five to 5,000 tons of asphalt.
“We tend not to do as much new general contractor work as we used to but concentrate on working with certain clients and taking on rehabilitation projects,” he said. “Rehab work is not new construction; instead, it is going into a 15- to 20year-old project and milling out repairs in bad areas and doing an overlay above them. We also do full-depth reclamations where we chew up the existing material, add Portland cement, fine grade it and then pave on top of that to get a stabilized base.”
The full depth reclamation (FDR) process is an environmentally friendly way to rebuild worn out asphalt pavements by recycling the existing roadway.
Rogers said that Ruston Paving began utilizing the method in 1995 at the company’s New York State locations and bought several pieces of equipment to carry out the work. After FDR’s use by Ruston tailed off slightly, he said, a Virginia project needing full depth reclamation in 2010 revived the company’s interest in the green process.
“We saw the benefits from it economically and environmentally,” Rogers said. “Rather than ripping out an entire section of pavement, throwing it away, and bringing in a new stone base — we can use the old pavement and stone that the owner already bought and re-use it as their new base. It is of benefit to both the customer and to us.”
Paving Firm Benefits From Solid, Family Leadership
Like most construction service companies, Ruston Paving began as a one-man operation when Mike Ruston bought a truck and a roller. It was known as Ruston Construction for its first 24 years before turning its focus to paving driveways and later, commercial projects in the Syracuse area.
Rogers said that Mike Ruston continued to run the company into the 1960s before his son, Larry, ran it in the 1970s and 1980s, followed by his son, Mark, the current owner, who worked to keep it a thriving family business.
In 1997, Mark Ruston moved to North Carolina to get his MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School and, at the same time, formed the first Ruston Paving office in the Tarheel State.
As it approaches its 80th anniversary in 2023, Ruston is recognized as an industry leader in each of the three East Coast regions in which it works.
Rogers credited the paving firm’s longevity to “good people that want to work and succeed. That means good people to run it and good people in the field because we are a team out here doing this. We can sell all we want to sell, but if we do not have hard-working crews to do it, the company cannot prosper.” CEG (All photographs in this article are Copyright 2022 Construction Equipment Guide. Page 50 • November 30, 2022 • www.constructionequipmentguide.com • Paving Section • Construction Equipment Guide Vögele Introduces Four New Mini-Road Pavers With Battery Or Electric Power
Vögele presented four new mini-road pavers at bauma 2022 that are able to pave widths ranging from .8 to 5.9 ft. Both the wheeled paver and the tracked paver will be available with optional diesel or battery-electric drive systems. The new machines round off the lower end of Vögele’s wide range of asphalt paving products.
“The demand for flexible and sustainable solutions at small construction sites is high and our view is that it will continue to increase. Our new mini pavers will enable customers to complete small paving jobs quickly, cost-effectively, sustainably and therefore profitably,” said Marcio Cavalcanti Happle, head of sales, local marketing and product/customer support at Vögele. Wide Range of Applications
Their compact dimensions and variable paving widths make the MINI 500 (diesel) and MINI 500e (battery-electric) tracked pavers as well as the MINI 502 (diesel) and MINI 502e (battery-electric) wheeled pavers ideally suitable for use in small-scale construction projects that include constructing cycle and pedestrian paths, paving between railroad tracks as well as repair work in small inner-city sites, which are often characterized by their narrow working spaces.
The standard screed working width is 2.6 ft. and it can be enlarged up to 4.4 ft. hydraulically. The minimum paving width can be reduced down to .8 ft., or the width can be built up to a maximum of 5.9 ft. using bolt-on extensions.
Compact transport dimensions of 105 by 62.4 in. and low weights of between 2,205 and 3,307 lb. (depending on the model) allow for easy transport. A narrow turning radius makes the four wheeled or tracked pavers extremely agile. E-Power: Local Emission-Free Asphalt Paving With MINI 500e, MINI 502e
Tenders are increasingly defining stricter emission requirements for construction projects. The battery-electrical drive systems used in the MINI 500e and the MINI 502e make them ideal for local emission-free asphalt paving.
The Vögele electric mini pavers, marked with the suffix “e”, both provide a sustainable production system when used in conjunction with the likewise battery-electrical tandem rollers from the Hamm compact line. Sales Launch in Europe
The European market launch of the diesel-powered models is planned for the first half of 2023 and the launch of the E-Power machines will follow afterwards. European distribution will be handled by the Wirtgen Group’s sales and service networks.

A lot can happen over a decade. Just 10 years ago, construction trailers accounted for approximately 5 percent of Tri-State Trailer Sales stock.
At that time, Tri-State Trailers Sales recognized an opening for a trailer provider with expert knowledge in the unique applications and laws that impact the construction industry. While the company’s trailer lines continue to address virtually every application in trucking, the dealership made a committment to position itself as a leading authority and source for construction industry-related hauling. Within five years, the dealership’s construction trailers business grew to 10-15 percent and the pattern has continued with the segment representing 30 percent of the company’s business today.
In addition to diversifying the sales stock, Tri-State Trailer Sales has made a commitment to service its customers 360 degrees by offering all types of specialized trailers to rent for as little as one day to long-term leases, at each of its four fullservice locations through the company’s leasing division, TSTL, Inc.
“It’s all about understanding the needs of our customers,” said Tri-State Trailers Sales Territory Sales Representative
Randy Infield. “Some of that comes from training and experience, but it also involves knowing the right questions to ask. It’s important to factor in what the customer is hauling, what the permit requirements and what the weight restrictions are where the hauling is taking place. Transportation requirements in the construction industry are incredibly diverse, ranging from oversized loads and extreme weight to small, relatively lightweight compact machines. We’ve incorporated what we’ve learned from our customers and our suppliers to tailor our stock to meet the needs of our customer’s transportation challenges.”
Location plays a major role in trailer choice, according to Infield.
“A lot of companies operating in Pennsylvania in need of a low, 18-in. loaded deck height trailer, choose Fontaine’s Workhorse 55LCC over their Magnitude 55L Plus,” he said. “The 55LCC doesn’t need a spreader bar to haul 55 tons and it has a longer gooseneck, so it doesn’t require a flip neck extension, For companies with a multi-state business range, the Magnitude 55L Plus, equipped with a gooseneck extension, would be favored because it meets nearly universal state road and highway regulations.”
Tri-State Trailer Sales’ lineup of construction trailers includes hydraulic detach trailers, mini-decks, double-drops, hydraulic tails, multi-axle lowboys, tag trailers and traveling axles.
According to Infield, the construction industry has been the dealership’s biggest growth market and Fontaine Specialized, which manufactures all of the trailers mentioned above except for traveling axles and tag trailers, is the company’s leading trailer provider in the segment.
Among the Fontaine Specialized trailers Tri-State Trailers Sales offers are: • the Workhorse line available in capacities from 50 to 55 tons, close coupled (not spreader capable), with fixed flat level deck match to a tridem ride bogie and optional flip axle. Infield said that the 55LCC model is among the most popular for contractors and equipment haulers in Pennsylvania; • the Magnitude 3+1 spreader capable trailer line is available with flat level deck (FLD), drop side rail deck (DSR) or beam deck configurations (BMD), and with either a fixed or modular (M) tridem ride bogie and in capacities ranging from 55-60 tons; • the Magnitude 3+2 modular spreader capable tridem trailer line is available with a flat (MFLD), drop side rail (MDSR) or beam deck (MBMD) in 60- to 75-ton capacities; • the Magnitude 3+3 modular spreader capable tridem trailer line is available with a flat (MFLD), drop side rail (MDSR) or beam deck (MBMD) in capacities up to 80 tons; • the Xcalibur line of flatbed or dropdeck extendable trailers are available in lengths that stretch from 48 ft. to 80 ft. or 53 ft. to 90 ft. with excellent adaptability in a variety of hauling applications; and • Fontaine’s Renegade, a 30- to 40-ton range fixed tandem bogie available with hydraulic or mechanical gooseneck and optional flip-axle. Renegade models are available in loaded deck heights that range from 20 in. down to the 12in. mini-deck.
Infield said a key advantage of Fontaine’s Workhorse and Magnitude models is its unique hook and shaft design at the front of the company’s trailers. “On rough or uneven terrain, this feature makes it much easier and quicker to reconnect the gooseneck” he said. “There’s no more alignment needed than getting the gooseneck under the hooks.”
According to Infield, these trailer models are popular with contractors because deck space is a full 26 ft., free and clear. In addition, the ride height adjustment on both the gooseneck and suspension of Fontaine’s hydraulic detach models have seven settings, making them an extremely user friendly and a very versatile trailer.
“Tri-State Trailer Sales is one of our company’s leading dealers,” said Fontaine Specialized Sales Manager Tyler Vickers. “Over the past three to five years, the dealership’s business has grown exponentially and the company’s focus on being informed about the construction industry is largely responsible for that growth. Their sales team is extremely knowledgeable. We’ve worked very closely with them to provide in-person and online training, plant tours and we’ve have accompanied them on sales calls. With a fleet of trailers selected to meet a wide range of construction industry needs, and backed by outstanding service, Tri-State Trailers is really focused on providing the right solutions for its customers.”

TOWMASTER TRAILERS
As small business owners step into the journey of growing their business, identifying the equipment that supports you in working the way you work can make an incredible impact on the trajectory of your business. It’s important to understand what kind of tools and equipment can bolster your business, and what kind could hold you back.
For a small business owner, each decision can make a big difference.
Small business owners need to consider their business goals first to understand what they need from their tools and equipment. Towmaster talked with the owner of a family-owned landscaping business and he shared his perspective on what to look for when choosing landscaping equipment.
Family-Owned Small Business
Mulder Maintenance and Services (MMS) is a family-owned commercial and residential hardscaping and landscaping business in northern Indiana. Owned and operated by Andy Mulder, MMS has been designing, building and maintaining landscaping sites since 2013.
Mulder started his career in high school, working after classes, on weekends and on school breaks. After graduation, he entered the field of landscaping and snow maintenance full time. In 2013, Mulder had already spent more than a decade in the industry, and was ready to branch out and start a business of his own.
For over 15 years, Mulder has utilized his skill, expertise, creativity and superior craftsmanship to grow his business, give back to his community and provide residential and commercial property owners with their ideal outdoor spaces.
Identify Your Priorities
For MMS, the right tools and equipment were key to steady growth over time. In the early years of business ownership, Mulder knew he had to make an investment into the tools and equipment that would support him in working on his own terms. When it came time to choose a truck trailer, Mulder needed to make sure he was making the right decision.
After going over his business goals, and tapping into the experiences he has had up until that point, the key decision making factors were: build, quality, weight capacity and customization capability. Good Equipment Makes Difference
Armed with an understanding of how he wanted to grow his business, Mulder went to his local dealership to discuss trailer options.
Mulder ultimately chose Towmaster because of the build quality.
“I have never used a trailer that feels more solid than these. You literally don’t even know it’s loaded with the weight you put on it,” said Mulder. “The I-Beam frame is a big selling feature. They are just night and day different from other trailers I have used in the past. I also love that you can get different style ramps for any trailer you want.”
Mulder’s first trailer was customized exactly to his needs, and as a result, he was able to grow his business on his terms. Now, MMS has grown into a company of six people who focus on creative outdoor landscaping solutions that require a high level of attention to detail.
Future of Mulder
Maintenance and Services
The future is bright for Mulder Maintenance and Services, as it continues to grow its business and expand its customer base in 2021 and beyond. As his business advances, Mulder will continue to tap into the experiences of his team and his business goals to understand what equipment he’ll need in the future.
“The next time we buy a trailer we will be buying a T-50 that can haul two or three machines at the same time with one truck,” said Mulder. “I couldn’t be happier with my Towmaster trailers.”

GROWTH from page 26
The Greenville-Spartanburg market was the closest open territory to the dealership’s Monroe headquarters at the time, he said, and his company soon began a search for property in the area to set up shop, if only temporarily.
Later, after Ironpeddlers and SANY had established a foothold in the market, the manufacturer asked Broome’s company to build a larger facility to better care for its customers’ needs.
“Now, we have a seven-bay shop with a road frontage along Interstate 85 in Duncan, S.C., between Spartanburg and Greenville,” he said, adding that the branch sits on 6 acres.
Depending on their size, several machines can be housed in the service bays at any one time. From the location, Ironpeddlers keeps three service trucks ready for quick dispatch and a trio of resident technicians are on hand to repair any equipment issues.
To date, the largest SANY machines sold by Ironpeddlers in the Greenville market have been a pair of SY500 excavators, a 120,000-lb. model. Broome noted that Big Mountain Machinery in the Asheville, N.C. area bought them for use in building a large school project.
In eastern North Carolina, Ironpeddlers opened its Raleigh dealership two years ago, capitalizing on the non-stop growth of the dynamic Triangle market.
Back in the Palmetto State, the company is preparing a permanent home for its latest branch, this time in Horry County along the coast. Ironpeddlers is currently leasing a facility in Myrtle Beach, another dynamic region for construction, while it readies a permanent building in nearby Conway. Broome said the new location should be up and running in the fourth quarter of 2023.
That means the Myrtle Beach-area branch, in tandem with the GreenvilleSpartanburg, Raleigh and Charlotte-Monroe facilities, will effectively cover almost the entirety of Ironpeddlers’ sales territories for SANY products in the Carolinas.
As a result, more heavy equipment made by SANY can now be spotted working on highway and field projects in the two states than ever before.
Broome attributed that to Ironpeddlers placing an early emphasis on lessening the downtime of its machines once they are on the job site.
The contractors Ironpeddlers serves have responded positively to the significant investments it has been making to open its three branches over the last five years.
“What we found in expanding into the OEM equipment world is that your customers want confidence that you will be there to service them, so having a brick-andmortar shop provides them with comfort that you are going to fulfill their needs,” Broome said.
New, Used Parts Readily Available
Ironpeddlers understands that even the most dependable equipment requires a new part now and then. To be ready for those moments, the dealership has a large repository of new, used and remanufactured parts and accessories in each of its six locations.
Its parts division specializes in high-quality used components pulled from the dealer’s yard — one that holds hundreds of machines. If a part cannot be found at one of its branches, Ironpeddlers also can locate it through a worldwide dealer network.
Lately, the used parts division of Ironpeddlers has proved to be quite successful.
“The parts business has come in well over the past several years because with the down economy, people often work with what they have, so they will buy used parts instead of new machinery,” he said.
In looking ahead, Broome believes that Ironpeddlers’ future will continue to shine bright.
