Work Begins On Six-Lane I-64 Superhighway in Virginia

The I-64 GAP Segment A Widening project includes the addition of one general purpose lane on I-64 eastbound and westbound from mile markers 204.9 (just west of the Bottoms Bridge exit) to 215.6 (just east of the New Kent Courthouse/Providence Forge exit).

Work is set to start in November on widening Interstate 64 east of Richmond, Va., with the aim of completing a six-lane superhighway connection to Hampton Roads, according to an announcement by Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Commissioner Stephen Brich earlier this fall.

The aim is to add a third lane in each direction on I-64 in New Kent County and the northern reaches of James City County, southeast of the Virginia capital city.

The wider highway would connect with the recently expanded section of I-64 between Newport News and Williamsburg to the south of the new project area.

Each of those projects, along with the two new tunnels under way next to the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, will tackle the chronic traffic jams that frustrate shippers moving cargo between Interstate 95 in Richmond and port facilities in Hampton Roads, VDOT revealed.

Adjoining segments of I-64 between these two areas are six lanes or greater, which has created a 29-mi. “gap” on the interstate where drivers are forced to hit their brakes, VDOT noted. Congestion through that corridor is notorious, and continues to grow in the gap, disrupting one of the state’s most important thoroughfares.

The Richmond Times Dispatch reported that the first highway work will carve away at the median between mile marker 205, by the Bottoms Bridge exit, to mile marker 215, just east of the exit for Va. Highway 155 and Providence Forge.

Work on this segment of the freeway is slated to finish in

July 2027 at a cost of $210 million, far below VDOT’s original estimate of $277.8 million.

Construction work on a second segment, between mile markers 215 and 224, and located 4 miles east of the exit for Va. 33 and the town of West Point, is set for completion in April 2028. The transportation agency has estimated it will cost $244 million.

VDOT will seek bids next spring for the third segment, between mile markers 224 and 233, where the alreadywidened portion of I-64 begins. This construction is due to be finished in November 2027 and cost $231.8 million.

The highway between Newport News and Williamsburg was widened in the same way as the planned work east of Richmond — by cutting into the median between eastbound and westbound lanes. That often meant using the shoulder as a travel lane.

According to the transportation department, the I-64 GAP Segment A widening project’s major work items include: • Two bridge widening and rehabilitation efforts in both directions of the interstate over Va. 155/North Courthouse Road.

• A total of 10.7 mi. of I-64 roadway repairs and lane expansions.

• Installing overhead signage, ITS systems, sound barrier walls, retaining walls and storm drainage box culverts and pipes.

The budget compromise enacted by the Virginia General Assembly this year includes $150 million more for widening

I-64 in New Kent and James City counties, while the Central Virginia Transportation Authority, the Richmond regional body that deploys funds from the region’s sales and fuel tax surcharges, has committed $100 million to get started on what is likely to be a $750 million project when it is completed.

Expanding I-64 Seen as Critical Step Business groups in metro Richmond and Hampton Roads have argued that adding lanes in the final 29 mi. of I-64 between the capital region and Williamsburg is critical for the economic future of the two regions, the Times Dispatch reported.

“Building a third lane in each direction of the highway creates an opportunity connector unifying Richmond and Hampton Roads, growing the economy, improving the environment, and providing equitable opportunities for all,” VDOT noted on its website.

“Virginia recognizes the importance of connecting these regions, and has steadily invested almost $600M in this corridor, completing 21 mi. of widening in the Newport News area and 5 miles in eastern Richmond,” according to the state agency. “These efforts, combined with the expansion of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel at over $3.86 billion and the creation of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes network at over $900 million, demonstrate a commitment to providing infrastructure that will be a solid foundation to deliver opportunities for all.” 

Hills Machinery Honors Top Product Support Professionals

In early summer, Hills Machinery, distributor of construction, environmental and agricultural equipment in the Southeast, held a series of awards banquets at its 12 branch locations to celebrate the achievements of its top product support professionals.

The company’s customers have long known Hills Machinery’s emphasis on bringing in talented people to work in product sales, rental, service and parts.

From its base in Charleston, S.C., Hills Machinery has managed to spread that expertise around to its growing number of dealership locations, which includes nine in the two Carolinas, two in Virginia (with another on the way), and one in Georgia.

According to Jim Hills, the company’s president, the dealership provided a luncheon at every branch of Hills Machinery in the three states and “invited several of our vendors to join us both at the stores and on teams meetings.”

Each gathering highlighted the work of individual service technicians, parts support people and recognized the overall support performance at the branch level.

Additionally, he said, “we wanted to recognize the top achievements for our sales and rental personnel from a banquet we had earlier in the year.”

Hills added that the full-serve equipment distributor also takes the time to present a lifetime achievement award, which he said is not an annual honor, as well as the Summit Award, in recognition of an entire branch.

Finally, Hills Machinery bestows the Steven

Davis Award to honor a person of character within the organization.

“We have established these types of awards in order to emphasize that [they are] the tip of the spear, so to speak, with which we retain customers and grow our business,” he said. “We realized some time ago that if we did not take the time to recognize the people that were doing this work, that we were not honoring that commitment.”

Building Its Reputation for Excellent Product Support Hills represents and distributes products from several major OEMs, including Case Construction and Hitachi Construction & Mining, both manufacturers of heavy equipment. In addition, the dealership carries products made by Toro, Rokbak and Hudson Brothers Trailers, among others. Hills’ paving lines include machines from Sakai America, Mauldin and Astec/Roadtec.

Hills Machinery carries a full portfolio of Case Construction equipment, including the CX42D mini-excavator.

Enhancing its product support has been a major initiative for the distributor, according to the company’s top executive.

“Number one, we continue to invest in additional personnel — our greatest resource,” Hills said. “We have also continued to add service trucks and now, we have brought on Sprinter vans for light services, added lubrication services, and have begun servicing more and more compact equipment.

“In addition to that, we are opening new locations,” he said. “In the last 14 months, we have opened three new branches, including the Savannah locations and the Virginia stores in Richmond and Wise.”

At the Georgia and Virginia branches of Hills Machinery, the predominant product line is Hitachi, Hills said, but across almost the entirety of North and South Carolina, the company sells and services Case and Astec machines, the latter of which includes

When asked how well the marketplaces in Virginia and Georgia have accepted Hills Machinery, Hills answered, “I think the customer response was extremely positive because we brought a layer of product support that was missing previously under a direct relationship,” meaning one where Astec and Carlson were selling directly to end users without going through a distribution network.

“Also, our commitment to both the parts and service side of [Hills Machinery] has certainly earned the business the customers are rewarding us with,” he added.

The key difference between how an equipment maker offers its product support directly to a contractor and how Hills Machinery does it comes down to the latter having a larger network of branches and many more trained technicians at the ready.

“The manufacturer was very often putting remote technicians across the territory, and they were trying to supply their parts out of their main depot in Chattanooga, Tenn.,” Hills said. “Today, Hills Machinery will soon have 13 locations in a territory where they had none. Plus, we have almost 80 service technicians in an area where they have five, so the level of support is tremendously improved for the end user.”

He added that that has helped create a direct correlation between the growth of Hills Machinery’s service business and that of its sales volume.

Superior, WSP Begin Work On FDOT’s $171M Brooks Bridge Superior Construction, an American family-owned infrastructure contractor, along with WSP, an engineering, environment and professional services firm, will replace the John T. Brooks Bridge on behalf of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

This $171 million project, whose design introduces one of the nation’s first unbonded flexible filler internal tendons spliced girder system, will require the team to design and construct two new parallel shared-use bridges over the Santa Rosa Sound to increase capacity and improve traffic flow between Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach.

The State Road 30 (U.S. 98) Brooks Bridge Project will provide a vital, multimodal transportation link and improve safety for this popular vacation destination.

Protective barrier walls will separate new 12-ft.-wide shared-use paths, featuring scenic overlooks and shade structures, from traffic.

“The public’s support for this project has been overwhelming. We’re excited to implement their feedback in our execution,” said Superior Construction Manager Evan Lawrence. “Pedestrians and cyclists will benefit from additional parking and a new

recreational area beneath the bridge. We’ve also devised solutions to ensure this project is environmentally friendly based on the community’s priorities.”

The new structure will extend past the U.S. 98/Santa Rosa Boulevard intersection, eliminating the existing traffic signal and allowing better traffic flow. The project scope also includes additional drainage improvements, a new roundabout and intersection improvements from Perry Avenue (west of the Fort Walton Beach shore) to Pier Road (east of the Okaloosa Island shore).

In addition, the design-build team will prioritize providing safer boat access to the Brooks Bridge Marina. Since 2013, there have been two incidents in which barges have struck the Brooks Bridge or bridge fenders. The new design will increase the structure’s resilience which is crucial since it serves as a hurricane evacuation route for Okaloosa Island residents.

While construction is under way, the existing bridge will remain in place through the first two phases of construction to minimize traffic impacts. Superior and WSP expect to complete the project by August 2027.

Terrawise Solutions Holds Demo Day at Its McDonough, Ga., Headquarters

errawise Solutions held a massive Demo Day on Nov. 3, 2023, at its McDonough, Ga., headquarters.

A product that garnered a lot of attention throughout the day was the Terrawise compact track loader equipped with the all-new TerraBlade mounted on the front and a TerraRipper on the rear of the machine, which also serves as a counterweight for maximized balance.

The TerraBlade automated blade worked flawlessly for Noah Rivers of TNT Commercial Contractors, Bolingbroke, Ga., who demoed the machine for a while and said the set up was phenomenal. “It would make my life a whole lot easier by using this machine versus a dozer that doesn’t fit into certain places, especially for smaller slab accuracy,” he said.

In addition to new technology presentations, three new Terrawise Solutions-produced CTL attachment products were available for demonstration including TerraBlade, TerraRipper and TerraTrim.

Leica’s precision mastless solution was presented and AGTEK hosted office and field overviews in the conference room. Many vendors turned out to promote their goods and to support the overall event. Most of the Hexagon group of companies were out showing their products and providing in-depth

demonstrations. Lunch was provided and vendor giveaways were available, including a SECO surveyors vest, Traeger grille and DJI Mini 2 SE drone.

Terrawise Solutions had just become a Tenstar Simulator dealer prior to the event and representatives of Tenstar and Terrawise had the opportunity to provide hands-on demos of the simulators and provide and to discuss advantages of buying a simulator for in-house training for contractors’ crews. ARDOT Considers Upgrades to Fort Smith Intersection The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) wants public feedback on its proposed improvements to Zero Street and Interstate 540/Arkansas Highway 255 in Fort Smith in the far western part of the state.

The project calls for upgrades at the I-540 and Ark. 255 interchange in the city, with signal improvements at the intersection of Ark. 255 and 36th Street, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported Oct. 15.

The proposal also includes a realignment of the I-540 southbound on-ramp to intersect 36th Street through a button-hook intersection.

“The reason they’re looking at intersection improvements is the highway and Interstate 540 are running parallel, and they each have a couple of stoplights involved,” Dave Parker, public information officer of ARDOT, told the local news source.

“It sounds like it was a duplication of roads, almost, so it was creating a little bit more traffic congestion than anyone wanted,” he added. “The proposal would eliminate a couple of the stoplights and combine one of the interchanges to condense it from two down to one, which in theory will allow the traffic to flow quicker, easier and better.”

Parker said the road improvements are expected to cost anywhere from $1 million to $3 million, with construction slated to start next fall and finish in the spring of 2025.

The Democrat Gazette reported that the state transportation agency held a public involvement meeting in Fort Smith Oct. 12 to explain the project to attendees and hear their feedback.

State Rep. Cindy Crawford, R-District 51, which includes portions of Fort Smith and Sebastian County, also was on hand for the meeting and afterwards told the newspaper that the plans put forth by ARDOT sounded great. She noted that her constituents have complained about congestion in the area, especially as people are traveling home from work in the afternoon.

“It’s very dangerous, because you have three lights in a row, and [the improvements] will take one of those lights out,” Crawford said. “It will also allow the exit ramp coming off of I-540 onto Zero [Street] to be able to flow, where now it has a light that says ‘no right turn on red.’ So that traffic will be able to flow as well. [The project will take] care of congestion in two different places.”

Other folks attended the ARDOT meeting to see how the construction and new street layout may impact their businesses.

Michael Justice, with Bill White Volkswagen at 3510 S. Zero St., said the meeting helped answer some of his questions, but did not relieve his concerns.

“When they’re in construction, they’re going to impact the entrance to the front on Zero Street, and then on the side they’re going to move the road away from it there, but also bring three-lane traffic, so it will be harder to get in and out of the side,” he told the Democrat Gazette.

Demolition Activities Under Way On Raleigh, N.C., Union Station Project

Imagining a multimodal transportation hub in the space where an old warehouse sits might be a stretch of the imagination for residents in downtown Raleigh, N.C. But that’s exactly what regional transit authority GoTriangle is on track to accomplish for a mid-2025 opening in the Warehouse District.

The new Raleigh Union Station Bus (RUS Bus) Facility Project will feature not just an improved and expanded transit hub for Wake County and the region but also a mixed-use development with affordable housing and private parking on a 1.76-acre site. With the population growth the area has experienced in recent years and the need of the hour being seamless connectivity, accessibility and mobility, the project is timed perfectly to serve not just local bus service but also intercity Amtrak passenger rail and bus rapid transit along with being bike- and pedestrian-friendly.

Real Estate Development firm Hoffman & Associates and architecture firm Perkins Eastman are part of the team working with GoTriangle on the project, which broke ground in spring 2022. Clancy & Theys Construction Company, a national general contractor headquartered in Raleigh, served as the general contractor for phase 1 of the project work.

The scope of work, completed during summer 2023, included oversight and coordination of project safety and subcontractors’ pre-demolition mobilization, environmental remediation, utility abandonments, building demolition, mass grading and site stabilization. Phase 1 work began with environmental remediation for removal of asbestos. This included air quality monitoring inside the existing building while asbestos was removed and properly disposed.

Safety measures included mounting water wall safety fencing around the project perimeter, which protected the boundaries of the project area along S West and W Hargett streets, and the railroad adjacent to the Raleigh Union Station. The total demolished building area was more than 90,000 sq. ft. The interior building area included existing concrete basement and first floor slabs, which spanned the entire surface area of the project.

GoTriangle performed demolition and construction activities under the supervision of the Office of State Archaeology recording any significant artifacts discovered below grade.

Demolishing a building that was located close to a working railroad trackway took some creative planning to keep everyone safe, said Richard Major, GoTriangle’s director of capital development.

“For a portion of the below grade walls and footings located along the railroad, the project team figured out a way to place additional gravel-based materials to exert a surcharge on those walls,” said Major. “This method ensured that the below grade walls could withstand lateral pressures from the exterior soil, once we demolished the building walls down to grade elevation, mitigating the risk of railroad track settlement or movement. All the regional jurisdictional agencies, including the NCDOT and CSX Transportation, approved our approach, and it worked out well.”

After grading the space and taking out the basement short of its original wall, the phase 1 project team found a way to save on fill materials, Major said. North Carolina-based grading and earthwork subcontractor, Roadworks Construction (DBE), worked closely with demolition subcontractor, FOSS Demolition, also North Carolina-based, to salvage as much of the concrete and brick materials as possible, for reuse as fill material.

Cement was blended with soil in some areas to help stabilize the soil. Civil engineering and design firm Stewart monitored the placement of the fill materials and quality of the soil and materials that were used. These methods resulted in a considerable cost-savings compared with having to import the full volume of fill materials as originally planned.

FOSS Demolition pulverized concrete, brick and stone into backfill material that helped provide a stable base for the foundations. With 95 percent of that process completed, approximately 5,000 cu. yds. of material needed to be imported. The project team obtained approval from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Brownfields Redevelopment Section, to import approximately the structural fill from the Lake Wheeler Assemblage Brownfields Property in Raleigh, in accordance with the project’s DEQ Environmental Management plan. This means that 11,000 of the 16,000 cu. yds. of fill material used for see STATION page 74

Superior to Complete $72.6M Pedestrian Bridge in Charleston Superior Construction, an American family-owned infrastructure contractor, was selected by the city of Charleston, S.C., to construct a bicycle and pedestrian bridge connecting West Ashley and downtown Charleston.

The Ashley River Pedestrian Bridge will be the first cable-stayed movable structure in the country. Its hydraulic swing span components will allow the bridge to open horizontally rather than vertically, improving marine clearance.

Funded by the city of Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration, this design-build project will be divided into five segments spanning from West Ashley to the east end of the project limits at Lockwood Drive. A key feature of the proposed design is an iconic steel V-shaped pylon (see attached renderings), providing a bold architectural statement. Meanwhile, its outward-leaning stay cable plane will significantly reduce the risk of ice on the cables falling onto the pedestrian path.

narrow sidewalks. More than 63,000 cars cross these shared-use bridges daily. The high traffic volume resulted in more than 100 bike- and pedestrian-related crashes between 2014 and 2019 — necessitating comprehensive multi-modal transportation options.

To enhance the connectivity between

Downtown Charleston and West Ashley, Superior and its design partner, Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson Inc. (JMT), developed a preliminary design for the pedestrian bridge that will mirror the functionality of the existing adjacent highway bridge.

Their decision to construct the west and east approaches as boardwalk structures

will enable the team to avoid delays from relocating existing Dominion Energy power lines and accommodate future planned greenway beneath the pedestrian bridge.

“This project presents some unique challenges, including performing work near high-voltage underground power cables and meeting environmental requirements specific to native marshlands,” said Superior Construction’s Carolinas Division Manager, Richard Kirkman. “We’ve devised innovative technical concepts alongside our design partners to resolve each issue and fulfill the city’s need for safe, pedestrian-friendly transportation options.”

The team will construct the swing span bridge in the open position to minimize marine traffic impacts. The scope of work also includes new movable bridge operations with CCTV monitors, a touchscreen display and discrete pushbuttons for the gates. Additionally, they will provide a trailhead with benches, water stations and bike repair stations.

Construction is estimated to begin in April 2024, with expected completion in early 2027.

Industry Gathers in Louisville for Equip Exposition 2023

W

ith more than 1 million sq. ft. of exhibits and 30 acres outside, Equip Exposition once again broke records in attendance and exhibit space sales. The award-winning trade show expanded its usual footprint at the Kentucky Exposition Center to add the West Wing this year due to space demands. The trade show for the international landscape, outdoor living and outdoor power equipment industry takes place every October in the Derby City and brings more than $21 million to Louisville.

“The 2023 show was our largest to date — in attendance, in booth sales, sponsorships and in education sessions,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), which owns Equip Exposition. “It shows you how much companies and manufacturers want to be part of Equip Exposition and showcase their products to landscapers, dealers and the entire industry. It is the place to be every October if you’re in this business.”

With co-location partner Hardscape North America, Equip Expo fully occupied the North, East and South halls of the KEC, with newly-added square footage in the West Wing.

“We’ve now grown to fill all of the halls and have added a big part of the West Wing to our footprint,” said Kiser. “Not to mention, we have maxed out on outdoor demo space, which is one of our most popular features. It’s the only show in the industry where you can dig, cut, mow, mulch and test equipment before buying. This year we also added select workshops in Spanish, a women’s reception and an expanded UTV track outside.”

This year’s Equip Expo brought together more than 27,000 registered attendees from all 50 states and 46 countries. Landscape contractor registrations increased by 20 percent over last year, and dealers were up 5 percent.

Plans for 2024 are well under way, including a Welcome Reception at Churchill Downs, which will mark the 150th anniversary of the Kentucky Derby in May 2024 with upgrades to the racetrack, as well as another arena concert at the Yum! Center in downtown Louisville.

“Building on the success of this year’s show, we continue to incorporate new experiences for 2024.

We’re currently looking for talent for another Yum! Center concert and building out the slate of speakers for our education series,” Kiser said.

“Every year, Equip Exposition invests in and commits to making the user experience unique in response to the industry’s needs, demands and market changes. So, while it will be the same show you’ve always loved — it will just get better.”

S.C. Biz Takes Purpose-Driven Approach to Success

Gerry Kenny is personable in a very gregarious Irishman sort of way, but his aggregate processing equipment operation is no-nonsense and customer-centric. No blarney, in other words.

The Beaufort, S.C., dealership is called Sand Science Inc., a name purposefully chosen by Kenny to focus on his expertise rather than as an expression of allegiance toward one brand of machinery or another. The business is for contractors who need aggregate processing solutions, not just a piece of equipment.

“Problem-solving is the core of our business,” said Kenny.

“We can tailor the equipment to that end. It is fair to say that we are industry leaders for solving problems for our customers. We are very unique within the industry.”

For 38 years, Kenny has successfully worked this business formula. His customers mostly are contractors of one kind or another. His product lineup includes screening, crushing, conveying and recycling equipment. Roto-Screen trommel screens are his biggest seller, with screens in general in constant demand.

When interviewed, Kenny had just returned from setting up a machine in the mountains of North Carolina. A repeat customer there needed a Revolver compact screening unit to help filter refuse from soil in an old dumping ground.

“We are doing an immense amount of work with customers who are finding that, as they develop a site, they run across a soils problem,” he said. “This compact Revolver screen is very popular in environmental cleanup.”

The North Carolina run was doubly beneficial for Sand Science: a rental contract with another repeat customer in the Tar Heel State was up, so Kenny was able to carry home that

machine on the same run.

Sand Science is the national distributor for Roto-Screen trommel screening plants, which are “very popular and versatile machines with so many uses for contractors,” he said.

Consequently, long-distance customers are not rare. Yet most of the company’s business remains in the Southeast, from Florida north to mid-Virginia and Tennessee and as far west as Alabama. Other product lines include Barford conveyors and screens and Kafka conveyors and feeders.

“We are on Interstate 95 and thousands and thousands of potential customers drive past all the time,” Kenny said of his Southeast customer base. “Contractors stop by and say, ‘I’ve been driving by this yard for 30 years and I never thought I would need a piece of your equipment.’ That happens quite a lot. And we usually can solve their problem.”

What Sand Science does not offer are excavators and wheel loaders and other types of industrial and construction machinery. That is not an oversight.

“Too many people in the industry try to sell everything,” said Kenny. “A lot of existing customers and new customers come to us because they know we aren’t going to try to talk them into buying an excavator. We stay within the field we know.”

On the Sand Science lot in South Carolina are millions of dollars of aggregate processing machinery — positioned there for quick responses to customer needs, according to Kenny.

“We know the nature of the American customer. ‘I have a problem and I need it resolved now! Don’t tell me I have to wait six weeks for a machine!’”

The spectrum of these demanding American customers ranges from fledgling company owners to 24-7 industrial executives. Kenny listed a broad variety of types of customers, including railroad car and barge loading contractors,

he began to work for the Irish manufacturer of Powerscreen equipment. He worked with that brand first in England and then on the Continent before moving with the company to South Africa and its large mining industry.

In 1984, when apartheid policies began to lose their grip in that African nation and tumultuous change was in the offing, Kenny and his wife decided it was time for another move. The Irish organization was setting up dealerships in the United States, a place the couple had long desired to live. Looking for a warm-weather state, the Kennys opted to start a dealership in South Carolina.

“Sand and gravel processing were the mainstay of the industry here,” Kenny said.

So, to loosen his identification with any

single brand, he opted to name his dealership Sand Science Inc. Some years later, he parted on good terms with Powerscreen. As foreseen, the generic name of the company transitioned easily to accommodate other manufacturers.

Renting equipment instead of buying it is a driving force in many industries today — including aggregate processing. Contractors digging, screening and crushing material encounter situations where investing in a machine is a bigger risk than they want to take at that moment. Big operators sometimes just need an interim piece of equipment, for example.

“Then, there are small operators, or seasonal ones, who can’t afford a machine at the start, so they rent once or twice a year till

they reach a point where they can afford to have one in their equipment yard,” Kenny said.

Bottom line: Rental customers are an important segment of the company’s revenue stream.

“We eventually sell a lot of equipment to people who start off renting. We don’t try to take customers’ money when they don’t have it.”

Rentals of the processing equipment can run from a couple of weeks to a couple of years. Kenny said keeping a solid lineup of equipment in his equipment yard is a key to rentals.

“For instance, we try to make sure we have some of our specialty transloading and rail unloading machines in stock. It’s impor-

tant for us to have it here ready to go.”

After nearly four decades of experience with aggregate-handling equipment, the 68year-old company owner is in a position to see industry trends. One trend is the increasing popularity of mobile machinery rather than fixed plants. While Kenny believes in mobility, he sees the shortcomings of selfpropelled machinery on tracks, though he can offer such models to his customers.

“There is a tremendous need for mobile field machinery,” he said, citing wheeled processing units that are easily moved from place to place — “machines like RotoScreen has that you can pull into a site and be working in five minutes.”

Writing the Great Irish American Novel Gerry Kenny has enjoyed writing since he was a child in Ireland writing school compositions in English and Irish. Fast-forward a few decades: Kenny now is combining his Irish heritage and his love of language to craft historical novels.

Kenny is the owner of Sand Science Inc., a S.C. aggregate processing equipment dealership.

However, he is transitioning from fulltime businessman to part-time businessman, part-time author. “I’m putting 12 hours a day into machines and 12 hours into books,” he joked.

Writing under the pen name of Michael Gerard (which actually are his first and middle names), his latest novel is The Irish Merchant of Alicante. It tells the story of four generations of the Moore family, who were landlords in Ireland beginning in the middle of the 17th century.

They were gentry who nevertheless began to sympathize with the tribulations of tenant farmers and the many Irish people restive under English rule.

The Irish eventually won their independence and their freedom from the landlord system, of course, but the Moore family was not on the losing side. Kenny’s book is a sympathetic look at the struggle from the eyes of the progressive overlords.

“The Moores were a rare breed among landlords,” he said. “They were Catholic and very nationalist.

The third book came about after a family member drove Kenny to a ruined mansion in County Mayo while he was on a trip back to Ireland five years ago. The structure dates from the 1790s and had belonged to the Moore family. That trip sparked Kenny’s research for and writing of the latest novel.

As a former cement plant worker and aggregate equipment business owner, Kenny admired how firmly the 230-year-old building still stood.

“George Moore was particular in using quality Irish limestone from a local quarry in building that house.

The structure still is solid as a rock.”

His hope is that the book on the Moores might spark a movement to restore the impressive structure, which is featured on the cover of the novel.

“That will be my reward.”

Does Kenny, writing as Michael Gerard, have another book in him?

Yes, he said. He is looking for other Irish American connections to write about in future books. “There are a lot of Irish Americans who haven’t gotten their 15 minutes of fame.”

SENNEBOGEN Names SHM Authorized Service Provider Sound Heavy Machinery (SHM) has been named the official SENNEBOGEN authorized service provider of the Carolinas.

The Wilmington, N.C.-based full-service dealer will represent SENNEBOGEN in offering warranty service, scheduled maintenance plans and service on SENNEBOGEN’s current and legacy machines. Metso to Launch New Lokotrack EC Range in Spring 2024 The first products of Metso’s new dieselelectric range of Lokotrack crushers and screens will be launched in spring 2024.

The launch event, called Lokolaunch, will take place at the Nokia Arena in Tampere, Finland, on May 14-16, 2024.

The new track mounted Lokotrack range, called EC range, is designed and built on a unique new platform that Metso has been developing since 2020. The Lokotrack EC units feature a next-generation diesel-electric powerline. All process functions are electrically driven and controlled by automation to always perform at the optimal load level.

The new Lokotrack will have a robust and distinctive design and it will feature the latest digital tools, making operating and maintaining the units easier than ever, according to the manufacturer.

are less likely to have engines subject to Tier IV and Tier V regulations and, therefore, are less susceptible to technological breakdowns.

“Five years ago, customers wanted fancier controls and more electronics.

Now they don’t want the bigger machines so much. They want to keep it simple.”

Through the years, Kenny also has witnessed a “very haphazard” marketplace for recycling equipment, as public recycling campaigns and buyers of recycled materials come and go. “It’s a very complicated situation overall for the recycling industry.”

What is proving a boon for dealers of recycling machinery is the movement to utilize urban land previously passed over because it was boggy or rife with roots or formerly was the site of a dump.

“They can get one of our screens in there and repurpose a site by environmentally cleaning it. That part of recy-

cling is very much growing.”

Sand Science Inc. is very much a family company now. Sons Eoin and Adam Kenny are fully involved in managing and operating the firm alongside their father. The senior Kenny believes that having the three Kennys as the face of the business makes doing business with Sand Science a more satisfying experience for customers.

“When you come in here, you’re dealing with the owners of the business, me and my sons,” he said. “And we’re dealing directly with the people who make the machines. So, when a contractor comes in and says to one of us, ‘I have a need for this or that machine,’ we can tell him straight up, ‘We can do that.

We can make it happen.’ The customer knows very quickly he is dealing with a principal in the company.”

The company founder is

cautious of talking too much about the future of the company. However, with Sand Science Inc. now a national distributor with customers across the country, a second U.S. location farther west makes sense.

“Yes, I foresee that happening,” Kenny said of the company’s eventual expansion. “We have talked about it.

Turning Tragedy Into Triumph: ARTBA Expands Aid for Children of Fallen Workers The ARTBA Foundation’s scholarship fund, which for 25 years has helped children of fallen highway construction workers attend college and trade school, is expanding its reach and impact.

The newly renamed Lanford Family Transportation Construction Worker Memorial Scholarship now extends post-high school financial assistance to the sons, daughters or legally adopted children of workers killed or permanently disabled while working on projects in these sectors: airports, bridges, marine, ports and waterways, public transit, roads, railroads, tunnels and utilities.

ARTBA’s analysis of available federal data has found that about 150

transportation construction workers are killed annually on the job.

“The 2021 infrastructure law is providing record levels of federal investment in all modes of surface transportation to repair and modernize an aging network,” Stan Lanford said.

“The American people will be the ultimate beneficiaries of these improvements. At the same time, however, the increased investments also mean many more project work sites that put more construction workers at risk. That’s why now is the right time to expand the scope of the scholarship.”

“The Lanford family has further cemented its legacy as a transportation construction leader with its commitment to expanding the scholarship’s

reach,” said Paul Yarossi, the ARTBA Foundation chairman and a senior executive with HNTB. “We will be able to provide a ray of hope for more children of construction workers who make the ultimate sacrifice while building a better America.”

The program was created in 1999 as the “Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship” with a generous gift from Roanoke (Va.) contractors and brothers Jack Lanford (Adams Construction) and Stan Lanford (Lanford Brothers Company). Nearly $800,000 in aid has been provided to worthy students in 33 states.

As of 2021, some 53 percent of AI use in construction is in the design and planning process, he said. The other 47 percent of AI usage falls under the categories of safety, fleet management and equipment maintenance.

Project managers spend 35 percent of their time on any project trying to resolve conflicts, said Poliafico, a director of the firm.

“So, the idea that AI can be used in BIM space to reduce conflicts, when you think about efficiencies, is absolutely fantastic.”

Then there are programs on the market equipped with features to predict accidents, monitor employee practices or plan safety stand downs.

“At what point in the project are you making sure everybody is doing the right thing?” posed Poliafico. “In fleet and equipment, you can track equipment to see what’s going on with a vehicle out there for preventive maintenance.”

And where labor is concerned, employees in wearables are producing data that can be analyzed for a picture of a project or a company.

“That’s a great thing,” said Poliafico. “With AI you can pinpoint and get better insurance pricing when the system can show you’re a better risk.”

Attractive Benefits Implemented early on in the project planning process, AI tools can help minimize disputes throughout the project, positively impacting profitability.

Ahmed Ismael, FTI Consulting, believes that reducing risk by minimizing accidents and focusing on safety is “of utmost importance” in construction. He sees contractors using AI-driven predictive analytics to monitor previous accidents to identify patterns and facilitate proactive accident prevention measures.

AI-powered contract analysis tools can quickly scan contracts to identify potential issues or discrepancies. Analyzing historical data from past cases, AI algorithms can predict potential areas of conflict and assess key risk factors.

The use of AI by cyber criminals is rampant and changes the way contractors have to look at potential risks.

Contractors must make sure they’re sharing the right info and that it couldn’t be used in a bad way.

Robotic systems equipped with AI can work efficiently, accurately and tirelessly, “reducing the reliance on human labor for repetitive tasks,” said Ismael. “This will not only enhance productivity but also eliminate the risk of injuries associated with physical tasks.”

Going further, the installation of sensors on heavy machinery and equipment to detect wear and tear can predict potential breakdowns in construction fleets.

Consultant Ismael favors the preventive maintenance benefits of AI, noting that the result is reduced downtime and repair costs.

“It also ensures that projects progress smoothly and deadlines are met,” he said.

On job sites today, record-keeping is AI-powered so that real-time monitoring systems can provide a comprehensive view of project progress. Performance metrics and potential bottlenecks also can be detected and mitigated with AIequipped systems.

“By analyzing data from various sources, such as drones, cameras and sensors, AI can facilitate effective decisionmaking,” he said.

In addition to decision-making, an AI system can prompt action to head off emerging issues, Ismael added.

“Construction projects are prone to disputes and disagreements that can lead to costly and time-consuming litigation processes.”

AI can help with that, he said, through sped-up review and analysis of legal documents.

“AI-powered contract analysis tools can significantly speed up the process, efficiently scanning contracts to identify potential issues or discrepancies.”

Not Without Red Flags The biggest question construction workers have about AI as it takes on a bigger role in the industry is “Will the technology replace me?”

It’s a valid question, but one that both construction and insurance industry consultants say is not that big an issue.

“People worry is AI going to take my job? Absolutely not,” said Kevin Dulaney head of technology and innovation of Hotwire.

However, he is quick to qualify that statement, saying, “someone who understands it probably will take that job.”

Dulaney, who describes himself as “very passionate about AI,” said he sees a shift from the Information Age to the AI Age. “It’s important to understand AI and the subsets of it,” Dulaney said in the AGC webinar. “As AI becomes more available, it’s going to affect the skillset.”

The technology has been around awhile, he said. It’s started conversations in construction because of its ability now to create content and intellectual property.

Poliafico asked Dulaney to address the risks and concerns of today’s AI research and development.

rate. In adopting AI, contractors must consider issues such as where the data is coming from and whether it is clean and unbiased, he said.

“What info am I giving AI? For instance, you’re not putting your social security number into an AI system because it could create a model for others.”

In that regard, it would be used incorrectly and someone else could have access to your data. That’s a critical issue contractors must be aware of.

“There are always services out there to protect your data, but it’s important to be cautious, and think about the data,” said Dulaney.

He advised listeners that while AI applications are being developed, they, too, should develop policies on how data will be used and who will have access to it.

Polifico was concerned about hacking. “What practical consideration should be given when bringing a platform into the organization?”

In closed models, there can be contracts put in place that stipulate the data cannot be shared, Dulaney said.

“But what is the minimum the party you’re sharing with can share? They have to understand the limits of what can be shared with an outside vendor.”

Which brings us to another side effect of AI, one of the newest and quickly ballooning expenses for construction companies today: Cybersecurity insurance.

Emily Short, Baldwin Risk Partners, told webinar listeners that the insurance company is just as deeply concerned about cyber criminals as business owners are.

“Will insurance carriers want to see a lot of this data, where do contractors line up and what are the pros and cons?” asked Poliafico, concerned about privacy.

Short, Baldwin’s director of cyber product, said contractors have to take a step back and focus on the benefits of AI. “It’s been used a while now in the insurance industry.

Cyber is newer insurance so the modeling is not as robust as other lines of coverage.”

She said insurance carriers are still trying to figure out ways to help customers understand their exposure and help them price coverage accordingly.

“We’re using AI to figure out where vulnerabilities lie within an organization. We use those scans to customize a

program for the customer.”

She said while it sounds scary, it’s beneficial to the insured to protect the construction company from a cyber incident in the first place.

“It gives them knowledge and knowledge is power. Cyber underwriting can be daunting and the premiums have skyrocketed,” she said. “It’s a hard pill to swallow from both sides. It’s hard to budget appropriately when you see spikes.”

But the use of AI by cyber criminals is rampant, said Short. The crime changes the way contractors have to look at potential risks.

“Other security controls will use AI to address the risk, but cybercriminals are ahead of us, so we’ll have to pay attention to it,” she said.

Poliafico cautioned listeners to make sure they’re sharing the right info and that it couldn’t be used in a bad way.

“Privacy issues are astronomical in my mind.”

Bethany Barrese, a partner pf Saxe Doernberger & Vita, said the idea that insurance carriers are using AI to handle claims, makes her uncomfortable.

Referring to a case where an insurance company “acted in bad faith,” Barrese said the company failed to adequately review claims.

“They took 1.2 seconds to review claims,” she said adding the case raises key questions of whether it’s bad faith to let AI handle claims.

“Is that reasonable? I also think cases like this will become more frequent. I think this should raise questions for policyholders.”

Barrese urged webinar participants to ask their providers how they use AI in the claims process. “And I would ask before I buy a policy.”

She said it might be a consideration in purchasing coverage, and if a contractor has a claim denied, he should ask how they used AI to handle the claim.

“This will become more and more relevant as it’s used more by insurance companies,” she added, referring to AI. Poliafico suggested contractors have conversations with their brokers and carriers about new technology their bringing into the company.

“How would my policy cover that? Be prepared. Tell your carrier about new technology being used. It’s critical, along with the privacy piece.”  CEG

With the RUS Bus Facility Project being a joint development, GoTriangle selected Hoffman & Associates to lead the development team responsible for designing and building not only the public transit facility but also the private overbuild facility that will include a more than 20-story tower now named Union West. A request for qualifications in January 2019 to identify the best private development partner with experience working on similar projects brought in Hoffmann & Associates. The firm also will provide an interim operating plan addressing safety factors for implementation when the public facility is opened for revenue operations while the highrise construction is still in progress.

Funding for the project includes a federal BUILD grant (Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development Transportation Discretionary Grants Program) of $20 million for costs associated with the public transit facility.

GoTriangle, local and state funds will pay any additional costs for the public transit facility.

Major shared that construction of the first of three large Dillon Supply Company buildings started in the early 1900s.

Construction continued in phases until the early 1970s.

GoTriangle performed demolition and construction activities under the supervision of the Office of State Archaeology recording any significant artifacts discovered below grade.

Additionally, portions of the existing building facade were retained in place and will be incorporated into the next phase of the vertical construction of this project.

“Communication and coordination with stakeholders and partners were key to our success,” Major said. “Partnership with the city of Raleigh’s Transportation department, resulted in approval of S West Street being temporarily changed from a two-way to a one-way street, allowing construction vehicles and equipment access to the site while maintaining limited parking adjacent to businesses directly across the street. Upon completion, the overbuild’s vertical construction will be approximately a 370,000-sq.-ft. mixed-use tower and feature approximately 400 apartments with at least 10 percent affordable housing units and about 425 parking spaces.

John Moriarty & Associates will be the general contractor for phase 2 construction of the joint development, with deep foundation activities planned to begin in November 2023.

After Raleigh Union Station opened in 2018, the launch of this project has been highly anticipated, and progress keenly followed by residents and industry alike.

Of special significance is whether transit-integrated developments such as this provide a solution for cities with increasing populations, and therefore, an increasing need for transportation options. Peter D. Cavaluzzi, Perkins Eastman’s design principal and board director, addresses just that in a recent post for the Urban Land Institute sharing that vertically integrated transit development could be the answer to ensuring urban districts and city centers evolve into a diversity of experiences for those who live, work and play there.

To tackle the rapid growth of our cities and answer the rising demand for convenient commutes and connectivity, planning for urban spaces and the movement in and around those spaces is a process that must go hand-in-hand, affording cities the opportunity to thrive well into the future.

Perhaps the RUS Bus Facility Project will provide a successful framework for other cities and urban areas to replicate.  CEG

t was back to Kissimmee, Fla., Nov. 1, 2023, for the staff and customers of Yoder & Frey Auctioneers.

As the compact and heavy machines began to go on the auction block, the crowd continued to grow at the Yoder & Frey auction in Kissimmee.

A great looking lineup of mini- and mid-sized excavators was available at this sale.

These little ride-on mini’s seemed to be all the rage at every auction and Joe Neargarder (L) and Angel Delenon of All American Land Clearing, Palm City, Fla., planned to bid on a few.

eff Martin Auctioneers had a great dress rehearsal for the upcoming 2024 Florida Auctions with a successful sale at its Kissimmee, Fla., location on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

Day one began with auctioning of heavy iron, attachments and miscellaneous support equipment and concluded with a crane, heavy transport and equipment virtual auction under the big tent. Day two was the first annual Florida Trucking Association auction. A few dozen new mini-excavators were sold, including manufacturer units from AGT Industrial, MIVA, CFG Industry and Chery Equipment Group.

Those stuck in traffic on Poinciana Drive on a dark foggy Kissimmee morning were rather curious about the lights at Jeff Martin’s sale site.

High atop a Cat PM822 cold planer in the sale lineup is Oscar Rios of Rios Machinery, McAllen, Texas.

A large crowd of onsite bidders turned out for this sale.
