The Pelican State was ravaged by the Category 4 Hurricane Laura in late August, leaving a trail of destruction and an estimated $14 billion worth of damage in southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

402MX LLC Creates Turnkey Motocross, Supercross Tracks Throughout Southeast Brad Stone never imagined that his passion for riding BMX and motocross as a kid would eventually lead to a career building competitive tracks across the country.

“I was six or seven years old with a shovel in the backyard when it all started,” recalled Stone, who is the owner of 402MX LLC. “I loved riding bikes and was just digging my own jumps when some friends started asking me to help build tracks in their backyards as well. When I got a little older a buddy’s dad, who had an excavation company, let me borrow the backhoe and kind of figure out things on a larger scale.”

In 2002, things became official for Stone when he and some friends built a mountain bike park at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.

“We did that first track just to have a nice place to ride,” recalled Stone. “Since then I’ve done projects in Jamaica, Mexico, Canada, Alaska and throughout the lower United States. Some jobs are more challenging than others, but when it all comes together it’s pretty cool.”

His experience with riding bikes is integral to Stone’s ability to shape a track for any type or skill level of rider.

“I can take my background from knowing what a bike will do and apply that to creating

a track and shaping the earth a specific way to make the bike do certain things,” explained Stone. “Essentially, I can cater tracks to a wider audience at a commercial site or create a specific element for a private build. Every jobsite is a new experience because no two tracks are the same.”

Stone currently focuses on creating and regrooming motocross and supercross tracks for private and commercial customers throughout the Southeast. Projects range in size from $15,000 to $150,000 and take from one week to two months to complete.

While 402MX is widely recognized for building tracks, Stone emphasizes that his company can take on full site development for customers as well.

“A lot of the pros want their own training facilities, and we’ll take their project from nothing to a full site,” said Stone. “We can go from clearing a wooded area to really bringing the master plan together. We’re a 100 percent turnkey operation.”

For example, in 2019, 402MX built a commercial complex in Lugoff, S.C., where it handled the project from first cut to final grade in a month.

“The landowner sold 50 acres of timber, so we started by cleaning up what the loggers left,” said Stone. “We installed all of the

road infrastructure, gates, three tracks, main building pad, 10 RV sites and handled some other dirt work. It was a big project, and we hope to do more like it.”

Fine Grading To kick off 2020, 402MX finalized a project near Morganton, N.C., for supermini rider Daxton Bennick.

“We completed a knock down rebuild of a supercross track at Bennick’s compound that we built three years ago,” explained Stone.

“Daxton is one of the biggest athletes in our sport and is the next level of talent coming through supercross, so we stepped up his track in difficulty. It’s pretty cool to work with him and see his growth as a rider on tracks that 402MX created.”

In just five days, the firm moved 9,000 yards of dirt throughout an area roughly the size of a football field. This project required highly technical grading to finely shape each jump and transition.

“Supercross riders are the top level of the sport, and they can tell when a jump is one or two feet off,” noted Stone. “Our ability to be precise when creating a track goes right back to the athlete. It also keeps us at the top of our industry.”

Precision and speed play equally important roles when competing in the sport as they do in building the tracks. For Stone, the quicker and more efficiently he can finish a project, the sooner he can get on to the next job site. To that end, adding the Komatsu D39PX-24 and D51PX-24 dozers, equipped

with Leica iCON iGD4SP – 3D systems machine control technology, as well as the Komatsu PC228 and PC390LC-11 excavators, two years ago has played a pivotal role in transforming 402MX. “I use either the D39 or D51 dozer to trim the rhythm lanes for a supercross track,” noted Stone. “Supercross has a lot of tight transitions and super peaky jumps, and the dozer’s balance provides smooth transitioning over the peaks. The vision from the cab is great as well, so I can always see what I’m doing and where my blade is for the really technical grading.

“As far as grading a pad or anything, it’s almost like the dozer does it for me,” continued Stone. “I don’t have to fight the machine and there’s no stabbing. I thought I was a pretty good operator, although after switching to Komatsu, I immediately became more productive.”

Ramping Up Adding the machine control technology has taken Stone’s business a notch further.

“It’s eliminated the need to pull strings and measure things multiples times, which easily saves us several days of work,” stated Stone. “I can build a facility faster, cheaper and more profitably than someone without it.”

Stone utilizes the excavators to move earth around the job site and create the jumps.

Five Cat 236D3 remote-controlled skid steer loaders, rented from The Cat Rental Store, were used for play to represent PACMAN and the four ghosts — BLINKY, INKY, CLYDE and PINKY. PAC-MAN and ghost avatars placed atop the Cat loaders could be seen above the maze walls.

Biloxi’s UMUSIC Broadwater is first of three locations for the hotel series, with other locations to be announced for Atlanta and Orlando. There also are plans for additional locations across the United States and globally.

On hand for the press conference was Biloxi Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich, who suggested that the hotel project is “the largest tourism project proposed in Mississippi.”

Lavia added that the new hotel complex will serve “as a creative hub for people [in] the creative arts industries”, in addition to housing incubator programs “to support engineers, digital startups and the music industry, as well as other aspiring entrepreneurs looking to create a career in the music and entertainment space.”

He added, “Our intention is to create a world-class facility to bring some of the greatest talent both regionally and internationally and act as a platform for local talent to kick off their careers. We’ll be working with schools and the community for exploration and discovery of these local talents from musicians to songwriters to engineers to video production and more. We’re just not a tourist destination but a producer of new and authentic talent and content.”

He said his UMUSIC Broadwater will employ “the most state-of-the-art technologies to entertain our guests, from virtual reality to augmented reality to artificial intelligence and holograms and much more. Wherever you look, you’ll be wowed.”

Lavia also assured those at the press conference that the hotel complex will utilize technology to focus on security and make certain all the latest protocols for coronavirus are in place to protect guests, staff and talent. 

The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) has won another competitive grant to help pay for a project to widen two sections of U.S. Highway 67 in Pulaski and Lonoke counties.

The $10 million grant under a U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT) program is the second the project has received this year. The agency received $40 million in June that will help defray the state’s share of the cost of the work, which could reach $160 million.

The ARDOT also received a $4 million grant from the same program to help pay for a railroad overpass as part of a north-south connector from U.S. 278 to the Arkansas 83 Spur in Monticello.

“We’re very happy, obviously, about this,” Kevin Thornton, the department’s assistant chief for administration, told the Arkansas Highway Commission at its meeting Oct. 14.

The projects were part of 70 in 44 states for which the federal transportation agency awarded $1 billion in grants under the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development, a discretionary grants program that targets regionally significant projects.

The US DOT said it employs such discretionary grant programs to “use a rigorous merit-based process to select projects with exceptional benefits, explore ways to deliver projects faster and save on construction costs, and make needed investments in our nation’s infrastructure.”

The ARDOT made a grant application for a third project — a railroad overpass and realignment of Arkansas 89 in Mayflower, however it was not awarded any money.

But in response to a question from Arkansas Highway Commission member Marie Holder of Little Rock, Thornton said federal transportation officials will hold a debriefing on why the Mayflower work did not merit as much consideration as the other projects.

The U.S. 67 project, though, was apparently a strong one.

The focus of the work will be on a 2.5-mi. section of the highway between Main Street and Vandenberg Boulevard in Jacksonville and a 2.8-mi. section between Arkansas 5 and Arkansas 89 in Cabot.

Jacksonville, with a population of 28,253, and Cabot, population 26,352, are close to Little Rock Air Force Base, a major economic generator in the region. The base is home to the world’s largest fleet of Lockheed C-130 Hercules and Super Hercules, a tactical airlift plane.

The project for which the grant was awarded includes building an overpass, converting the frontage roads to oneway operation, and reconstructing two interchanges to make it a modern interstate-quality thoroughfare. Up to 80,000 vehicles travel daily through the corridor.

Other money available for the project includes proceeds from the statewide 0.5 percent sales tax voters approved in 2012 as part of the $1.8 billion Connecting Arkansas Program, which is a state-level program targeting regionally significant construction. It will be the last project to be built under the program. 

Technology Aids in Reducing Highway Workzone Accidents SAFETY from page 1

open to traffic. At the same time, traffic continues to grow and create more congestion, particularly in urban areas, according to an OSHA report on worker safety.

“To avoid major queues during peak travel periods, urban areas are seeing more night work. The combination of more work done alongside increasingly heavier traffic and greater use of night work can result in increased safety considerations for highway workers,” the report said.

The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) recognizes that the safety of transportation construction workers is critical during this focus on road reconstruction.

During a July U.S. Department of Transportation Summit on Pedestrian Safety, ARTBA’s senior vice president of safety and education, Brad Sant, spoke on the need for policy that protects workers on the ground.

“When policymakers seek to mitigate risks to pedestrians, workers are rarely considered,” said Sant. “Currently, USDOT classifies workers laboring on the side of a roadway as ‘pedestrians.’ As we work together to stem the rise in pedestrian deaths and injuries, we must include roadway workers in those deliberations.”

Sant believes the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wrongly classifies roadway vehicle-related death of a person outside a vehicle as a “pedestrian” regardless of their activity or work at the time of the incident.

He said independent reviews of worker death data from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that as many as 200 workers completing tasks on America’s roadways are killed each year.

“As a beginning point, the U.S. transportation and labor departments should work together to align their data sets to better understand the risk to these workers,” said Sant.

Monitoring Worker Deaths Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) tracks facts and statistics on worker injuries and deaths on construction sites. Annually, fatalities at road construction sites typically account for 1.5 to 3 percent of all workplace fatalities.

Roadway construction worker fatalities reached a high point in 2005 with 165 fatalities. Between 2005 and 2008 the numbers declined, then rose slightly in 2009, and declined again in 2010.

The primary causes of worker fatalities are runovers/backovers, often by dump trucks. Second is collisions between vehicles or mobile equipment. And third, caught between or struck by construction equipment and objects.

Nearly half of worker fatalities are caused when workers are run over or backed over by vehicles or mobile equipment. More than half of these fatalities were workers struck by construction vehicles.

NHTSA data revealed in 2018 pedestrians accounted for 17 percent of all road deaths, up from 12 percent in 2009.

That’s reportedly the highest number in 30 years.

But because USDOT and NHTSA do not track worker deaths separately, there is little data to support industry requests to increase protections, ARTBA maintained.

Congressional mandates calling on the FHWA to create new, more protective “positive protection” regulations for workers have not been implemented, according to ARTBA. The roadway construction industry has had concerns about the number of worker deaths caused by motor vehicles for a long time, and has repeatedly called for an increase in

the use of positive protective means to separate workers from traffic.

At the summit, Sant recommended that a formal, annual alignment between the NHTSA database and the BLS data so USDOT better understands the number of “pedestrian workers” killed each year from motor vehicle crashes.

He also recommended the association continue working with state and local enforcement agencies to classify the activity of the pedestrian victim.

The goal is for USDOT to have a clearer understanding of pedestrian activity so it can create focused mitigation strategies that will effectively protect this vulnerable group.

“I believe once the agency sees the numbers of worker deaths, it will be more likely to respond to industry requests for better positive protective measures,” said Sant.

“To truly reduce pedestrian fatalities and injuries, we must better understand the nature of the risks and the activity of the pedestrians when they are struck,” he concluded.

Industry Answers the Call Toward that end, the Texas transportation construction industry, Texas Department of Transportation and ARTBA are working together to improve traffic safety and significantly reduce worker injuries, ARTBA Chairman Steve McGough reported.

In August, McGough spoke at an executive safety conference of the AGC of Texas and TxDOT. He said the industry’s commitment to worker safety never ends.

“Safety is a process, not an achievement,” he said. “We must continuously look critically at what we are doing and seek improvement — even when we think we are doing well.”

During a panel session, McGough outlined a number of technologies and approaches being used in the state to increase safety for project workers and motorists.

He believes mobile barrier systems would enable positive protection between workers and motorists, and that more smart work zones, particularly for queue warning systems that give drivers advanced warning of traffic back-ups, are needed.

He also recommended systems that detect construction vehicle access into and out of workspaces and warn approaching motorists of slower moving construction vehi-

cles.

Of all the traffic control systems and technologies on the market, McGough said speed cameras are a key tool.

“We’ve seen some good, positive outcomes with speed cameras that are effective at getting motorists to comply with posted speed limits,” McGough said.

In an association guidance document, “Managing Speeds in Work Zones,” ARTBA has shown that the presence of traffic law enforcement can yield up to a 15 mph decrease in driver speeding.

McGough encouraged Texas to follow the lead of states such as Maryland, Pennsylvania and Illinois that enforce work zone speed limits using cameras.

ARTBA also has launched what it touts as the construction industry’s most comprehensive safety training course “to help dramatically reduce the 700 motorist fatalities and nearly 50,000 injuries that occur annually in and around infrastructure improvement project sites.”

The Fundamentals of U.S. Transportation Construction Safety course provides 14 hours of online training. It features modules on falls, electricity, preventing struck-by and caught-in incidents, safety programs, workplace communications, risk assessment, internal traffic control, temporary traffic control and other common construction hazards.

The ARTBA course is aimed at engineers, safety professionals, public agency officials, planners and designers, inspectors, equipment operators and roadway workers.

“This online training has everything one would find in an OSHA-10 Hour class, plus it focuses directly on addressing the unique safety issues specific to transportation projects,” Sant said of the course.

“It also offers another path for construction industry professionals to meet the eligibility requirements to sit for the Safety Certification for Transportation Project Professionals exam.”

The safety certification program was launched in 2016 to help identify and mitigate potential hazards for workers and motorists commonly found in transportation work zones — skills identified through the exam.

“While the online course does not qualify for an OSHA10 card, participants will be learning critical information to work safely while also preparing them for the certification test,” said Sant.  CEG

Crews Execute Major Earthmoving for N.C.’s Urban Loop

The final section — the Northern Loop — of the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) Greensboro Urban Loop is being constructed by E.S. Wagner/Smith-Rowe, joint venture.

Crews began work on the $121 million section in April 2018 and are expected to deliver the section in late 2022.

“The Greensboro Urban Loop is part of NCDOT’s plan to improve traffic flow within and around the city,” said Aaron Moody, NCDOT’s public relations officer of Division 7.

“Construction of the loop will allow traffic to bypass Greensboro and improve congestion on existing I-40, particularly in the area that includes I-40, I-85 Business and U.S. Routes 29, 70, 220 and 421. Four sections, three that are complete, make up the 15 mi. of roadway that will complete the 44-mi.-long loop around the city.”

Interstate 840, the designation that will follow the loop north of Greensboro from I-40 on the eastern side to I-40 on the west side, will meet significant transportation needs for the Triad Region. Construction of the loop project, taking place in Guilford County, began in 2013.

The Western Loop 1 ($141 million) covered the area from north of Bryan Boulevard to U.S. 220 (Battleground Avenue) in northwest Greensboro. It included six lanes, finishing an interchange and building a new one. The project was completed by Vecellio & Grogan in March 2018.

The Western Loop 2 ($55 million) covered U.S. 220 and Lawndale Drive in northwest Greensboro. The work included six lanes, finishing the 220 Interchange and a constructing a new one connecting the Greensboro Loop to Lawndale Drive. It was completed by Flatiron on Dec. 30, 2019.

The Eastern Loop ($154 million) is between U.S. 70 and U.S. 29 north of Greensboro. Flatiron built four lanes, finished the U.S. 70 interchange and built two new interchanges connecting the Greensboro Loop to Huffine Mill Road and U.S. 29. It was completed in December 2017.

“The current design is a six-lane highway in each direction from the proposed interchange with U.S. 29 westward to the interchange with Bryan Boulevard near the airport,” said Moody. “Since the planning and environmental studies were completed in the mid-1990s, growth has increased in northern Greensboro. When NCDOT updated the traffic model for the project, the number of vehicles predicted to be using this part of the Greensboro Urban Loop increased.”

The Northern Loop, 5.3 mi., will be a six-lane freeway from U.S. 29 north of Greensboro to Lawndale Drive in northern Greensboro. The work includes: • the completion of the U.S. 29 and Lawndale Drive interchanges; • the construction of two new interchanges that connect the Greensboro Loop to Yanceyville Street and North Elm Street; • bridges built on the Greensboro Loop over Lees Chapel Road and Norfolk Southern Railroad and on Summit Avenue, North Church Street and Lake Jeanette Road over the Greensboro Loop; • building a cul-de-sac at the end of Watlington Road; and • connecting Pindals Road to Candlenut Road to eliminate the intersection of Pindals and Summit Avenue.

“One of the biggest challenges with this project is the amount of earth work,” said Patty Eason, NCDOT’s construction engineer, Highway Division 7. “There is approximately six million cubic yards of dirt to move. Other challenges include the community impact. The expected lifespan of the bridges is approximately 50 years, and 30 years for the concrete pavement. A unique material being used is the kilndried lime to dry out the earthen material that had become wet due to extreme rainfall in the initial phases of construction.

“The majority of hauling is done on-site, but when necessary, routes are selected that are normal designated truck routes,” she added. “Steel plates are placed to cross other roadways, and mats are placed to remove dirt off of vehicles as they leave the sites. This is a new route, so construction along the mainline can occur as the contractor determines his schedule.”

When fully open to traffic, the Greensboro Loop will be able to carry 96,500 cars and trucks daily.

The traffic impacts have been minimal and NCDOT is cooperating with local authorities and the JV to ensure that equipment and material (new and excavated) can easily be brought in and out of the construction zone.

The span from Lawndale Drive to North Elm Street is scheduled for completion in December, and the entire section from Lawndale Drive to U.S. 29 should be delivered in November 2022.

So far E.S. Wagner/Smith-Rowe has completed the following elements: • the permanent bridges at Lake Jeanette Road and

Yanceyville Road; • excavation of 2.3 million cu. yds. of soil; • placing 9,000 tons of lime-kiln dust subgrade stabilization and 90,000 tons of aggregate base; and • the installation of 29,500 lineal ft. of storm structures; 7,500 cu. yds. of reinforced box culverts; 7,800 linear ft. of water main; and 5,500 linear ft. of sewer main.

The rest of the 2020/21 construction season is focusing on completing the concrete paving; opening a section of the Greensboro Urban Loop from Lawndale Drive to Elm Street; and structures on Yanceyville Road, Church Street and Summit Avenue.

E.S. Wagner is managing the JV and performing all of the earthwork and roadway construction, while Smith-Rowe is responsible for the bridges, retaining walls, utility work and clearing and grubbing operations.

“There’s about 6.5 million cubic yards of embankment that’s generated through a combination of on-site cuts and borrow excavation. The overall challenge is the coordination of the project,” said John Wagner, executive vice president of E.S. Wagner. “It’s a complicated job to manage and maintain the construction schedule. Since the project’s inception, we have had a couple of wet seasons, which continue to impact our earth moving operations. To overcome that, we’ve had to modify our schedule, utilize some different spreads and locations than what we bid to perform the work. We do our best to be cost-effective despite the bad weather.

“The soil we’re removing, because of the weather, is wetter than we anticipated because of all the accumulated moisture we picked up over the last 2.5 years — it was much drier when we did our sampling at bid time,” he added. “In order to achieve compaction, you have to achieve an optimum moisture content and the wetter it gets, the more difficult to get compaction.”

The schedule also has been impacted by utility relocations that the JV was not responsible for.

“Power and communications were relocated by the DOT and utility owners,” said Wagner. “Some of those lagged behind. We worked through that with NCDOT and, in some instances, were able to re-sequence some operations. We have been issued some extensions to the completion date to offset the utility impacts that drove our critical path.”

“You phase that work at night when traffic volumes are less,” said Wagner. “Concrete is easier to handle at night because it has a tendency to heat up and hydrate and set up too quickly in the warm daytime hours. The key to managing a project like this is scheduling. We have a very elaborate critical path method schedule that we update on a weekly basis and monthly at a minimum. We use it to gauge our progress and where we need to focus our efforts to maintain the path.

“NCDOT is outstanding to work with. We have open lines of communications and we treat them fairly and deliver a quality product,” he added, “and in turn they treat us fairly.

We disagree from time-to-time, but we’ve been able to resolve any disagreements amicably. I have worked in a number of states and would rank NCDOT as one of the very best.”

The highway is being built through forests, fields and farmland.

“The site was heavily wooded when we started,” said Wagner. “The clearing and grubbing operations were critical early on. The bulk of the mainline is cleared at this point.

They are clearing the final borrow area now.”

The trees are a combination of hard and soft lumber, with the hard wood sent to saw mills and the soft wood being ground. Smith-Rowe is using Timbero tracked and Caterpillar tired feller bunchers; Cat skid steers and Cat knucklebooms to clear the trees.

“The clearing on the project was for the most part routine work, but it was always a challenge working around environmentally sensitive areas,” said Locke Rowe, Smith-Rowe’s vice president. “Our biggest challenges for the clearing on this project were the quotas imposed last summer by the mills, which made it really challenging to get the clearing material off the project in a timely manner.”

As areas are cleared, earth work and site prep crews move in.

“The first thing that we do, before and after clearing, is install erosion control measures because when you remove vegetation, you destabilize the site and when it rains, it creates erosion and sediment,” said Wagner. “It’s critical to contain it before it escapes the project limits. We have some limited stockpiling of the soil — only when we have to perform excavations at times when we can’t immediately create embankments. The vast majority of the volume is going straight to fill as stockpiling is very expensive.”

GPS and UTS-equipped machinery, such as dozers (Cat D4s to D10s) and hydraulic excavators (Cat 349s and larger models) are critical for the earth and site work.

“The bulk of the project is being performed without hard staking,” said Wagner. “Our crews utilize GPS rovers to establish their locations and to dictate cuts and fills. The storm drains and wet utilities are hard staked, as are the bridges and structures that are being constructed and the concrete pavement. They are loading onto a combination of onroad trucks for some of our hauls and off-road equipment, primarily Cat 740s and 745s with some configured with trailers, and Cat 621 and 631 scrapers.”

Road construction, bridge, retaining wall and utility relocation crews also are making serious progress.

The roads are being built on a stone base with a thin layer of asphalt that provides a seal course protecting the base course below it, which is topped by 13 in. of concrete pavement.

2,000 feet, two lanes wide.” said Wagner. “We anticipate finishing the western third of the job and opening it to traffic this fall. The drainage and pipe infrastructures are installed, preferably at the most opportune times.”

Crews are working on portions of interchanges — one each at either end of the project that were started on previous projects and two more in the 5-mi. corridor.

“Some of them are mainline bridges and some are Y-line structures, what North Carolina designates as side roads,” said Wagner. “We’re nearing completion on the second permanent bridge and we have already constructed and removed a temporary bridge that was used to maintain traffic. The plan of attack changes from structure to structure depending on the design and access. The challenge is coordination with roadway crews, because in some cases the bridges construction has to begin before the roadway is built.”

A typical Y-line bridge takes around six months to complete depending on the substructure and whether or not it has MSE walls.

“This project is unique in that there isn’t any pile beneath several of the end bents that are located on top of the MSE walls — they are sitting on spread footings, which I think is a new design concept for North Carolina,” said Rowe. “The railroad bridge presented some schedule challenges due to the large fills at either approach. It was necessary to come in and get the drilled shafts complete [with] interior bents poured, and center spans set before our JV partner could start placing the embankments on either side of the bridge.”

“Mike is responsible for the day-to-day management and coordination of all field operations, and coordination with our JV partner and the subcontractors,” said Wagner. “The team dynamic of our management is excellent. You always have some issues that you have to work to resolve, but we try to be a good partner and establish good relationships with the contractors we work with. That has been the case so far. It’s been a frustration for a lot of our work force to not be able to work as much as they would like to because of the rain. We have some very good crews, and we’ve been able to bring on some excellent people in the Greensboro area.”

Peak days have 150 JV and subcontractor personnel onsite, with the major contractors being Thompson-Arthur for asphalt paving; McCarthy Improvement Company for 13-in.

PCC paving; Mountain Creek Contractors for concrete box culverts; Nickelston Industries for guardrail and fencing; Cruz Brothers for concrete sidewalk and curb; and Colter Electric for electrical and lighting.

Equipment-wise, the JV is using: Cat loaders (930 to 972); Cat excavators (308Es to 390s); compactors (Raygo 320s and Cat 825s); Cat haul trucks (745s to 773s); Cat scrapers (621s to 631s); and Link-Belt cranes.

“The soils in the Carolinas are abrasive, particularly because of the sand content in the dirt, so we go through a lot of wear items, primarily cutting edges, bucket teeth and items that are in direct contact with the ground,” said Wagner.

“They have to be continuously replaced. We have a maintenance staff on-site that does the bulk of our day-to-day repairs and preventative maintenance. We also partner with Carolina CAT from time-to-time — they provide mechanics on-site. If we have a major breakdown or a rebuild that is necessary, we’ll take the piece of equipment to one of their facilities to perform it.”

The JV purchases and rents equipment from dealerships such as Carolina CAT in North Carolina, Blanchard Machinery in South Carolina (Cat), Ohio CAT and Linder Industrial Machinery.

“The dealerships are good to work with,” said Wagner.

“We buy a lot of Cat equipment and because these are dealerships that we work with on a repetitive basis, we have longstanding relationships with them. They know what to expect from us and we know what to expect from them. We take very good care of our equipment and they know that. They typically provide us with exceptional service because they know our standards are high.”  CEG

N.C. Awarded First-Ever Waiver for Drone Bridge Inspections Drones are the N.C. Department of Transportation’s newest tool in maintaining the safety of the state’s bridges and other infrastructure.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Oct. 2 approved a waiver that allows NCDOT to operate unmanned aircraft systems beyond visual line of sight while conducting bridge inspections. This approval is part of North Carolina’s participation in the FAA UAS Integration Pilot Program, which is focused on testing and enabling new innovative uses of drone technology.

The announcement makes NCDOT the first state transportation agency to have been awarded such a waiver, paving the way for other states to fully use drones in bridge and infrastructure inspections.

“We are pleased to be leading the way with this fantastic new tool,” said North Carolina’s Secretary of Transportation Eric Boyette. “Safety is our top priority at NCDOT, and this new system will enable us to complete inspections while better protecting our inspectors and the integrity of our

bridges.”

The waiver application was developed in part with Skydio, the largest U.S.-based drone maker. Skydio drones are powered by on-board artificial intelligence that enables each craft to avoid obstacles in complex areas that lack a reliable GPS signal, such as the trusses beneath bridges.

Ben Spain, the NCDOT’s UAS program manager, said drones have been used since 2016 to conduct bridge inspections. But by enabling the drones to move beyond the pilot’s line of sight, the inspections will be able to collect more high-resolution images in difficult to see places so inspectors can better analyze the bridge’s integrity and identify possible problems.

“Inspectors will collect images using the drone instead of a snooper truck or having to suspend the inspector from the bridge,” Spain added. “They’ll be able to do these inspections quickly with minimal impacts to the traveling public, like not having to close lanes of traffic for as long.” 

A trauma safety strap that attaches to a harness construction workers wear on the job enhances fall protection for workers.

3M of St. Paul, Minn., the company that makes the Fall Protection Suspension Safety Strap, is now including it with all harnesses it sells.

“We’ve gotten feedback from frontline workers, so we’re making it a standard feature on every harness,” Tim Thompson, a 3M global marketing manager said.

Sandvik Establishes Module for Large Quarry Operations Rock Processing Solutions Business

Sandvik has decided to establish a new business area, Sandvik Rock Processing Solutions (SRP), as of Jan. 1, 2021. The new business area will consist of the current crushing and screening division, which today is part of the Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology business area.

The reason for this structural change is to further accelerate profitable growth within rock processing, based on crushing and screening addressing separate parts of the value chain and facing different competition to the other Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology divisions.

Designed around its JW55 jaw crusher, the Cedarapids MJ55 modular jaw crusher is designed for large quarries or contractors that want a stationary type design without the complexity of a normal stick-built plant.

The module combines the JW55 jaw crusher, sloped hopper, Cedarapids 52x20 feeder and straight line conveyor on a galvanized steel structure.

The standard structure can be transported in standard shipping containers

The crushing and screening business had, as a division within Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology, about SEK 7.4 billion in sales and 15.9 percent operating profit margin in 2019 with approximately 2,000 employees.

Business area Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology will continue to be led by Henrik Ager and will as of Jan. 1, 2021, change name to Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions (SMR).

Mobile Crusher in the Sand Quarry To crush heavily compressed sand in a sand quarry was a second, very different task for a Rockster impactor. The sand is excavated with a vibro-ripper from an extremely strong quarry wall.

“This ripper produces solid lumps of sand. Then the excavator loads lumps into the crusher with a 5 mm screen, and we get great sand,” said CSB owner Lurii Lisnichenko.

With the screening system mounted onto the crusher it is easy to produce an exact defined final grain size in one pass.

In Morocco, sand obtained from a quarry is a product of high demand. The cost can range from 100 to 110 Dirham per cu m ($10 to $11 USD) and it is sold directly from the quarry.

Construction Work Begins On $90M Critical Care Tower in Gastonia, N.C. Construction has begun on a critical-care tower at CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia, N.C., west of Charlotte.

The 146,000-sq. ft. tower will have four floors, each with 26 private intensive-care rooms, centralized nursing stations and administrative workspace. Three floors will be available for immediate use, while the fourth one can be used for future projects.

North Carolina regulators approved the project in January, which is expected to cost approximately $90 million.

Critical care involves seriously ill patients with life-threatening conditions. The new tower will be to the right of the main tower at CaroMont Regional. It will be on top of the main location for operating rooms. CaroMont said planners had designed for a future tower when building the hospital about 50 years ago.

The Charlotte office of Robins & Morton Construction is the tower project’s general contractor. McMillan Pazdan Smith in the Queen City is the architect.

The new hospital tower is set to open in early 2023.

CaroMont sought employee input on the project as medical and support staff were involved in developing floor layouts and constructing mock patient rooms. CaroMont Health CEO Chris Peek said the hospital’s patient volume has been increasing for the last several years.

“Coupled with the projected growth of our community and the advancing age of our patient population, the need for

hospital-based care continues to rise,” Peek said in a statement.

The new critical-care tower is part of a larger $350 million investment into Gaston County. CaroMont announced the five-year investment in May 2019, which includes not only the new tower, but medical offices and a new hospital in the town of Belmont.

CaroMont plans to build that $196 million-plus, 66-bed hospital beside Belmont Abbey College and near the intersection of NC Highway 273 and Interstate 85. The project got a push forward in late August when CaroMont signed a lease with the Southern Benedictine Society of North Carolina to partner with the college to add health-care courses.

CaroMont Regional Medical Center-Belmont also will come with an emergency department, operating rooms, a labor and delivery unit and imaging services. Construction is scheduled to begin in April.

As part of its five-year investment in the county, CaroMont opened a 5,000-sq.-ft. urgent care in mid-July in Belmont. The health-care system also added a 15,500-sq.-ft. primary-care office in nearby Cramerton in February.

CaroMont has 4,300 employees and providers and logs nearly 250,000 patient encounters each year. The medical center is a 435-bed hospital — the fifth largest in the Charlotte region. 

“The PC390 is a huge machine, but it’s really fast,” continued Stone. “The hydraulics give the operator great control over the bucket, stick and the boom. He’s able to shape the rhythm lanes pretty closely using only the excavator.”

Komatsu, Linder Support When looking for new equipment, Stone turns to Linder Industrial Machinery and Sales Rep Mike Malloy.

“I can call Mike if I want to trade in a machine or demo some equipment and he’s on it,” said Stone. “What’s great about Linder is if I’m in Florida or the Carolinas, I have one guy who I talk to. That was a big part of working with Linder; they cover a lot of the territory where I operate.”

Stone relies on Linder and the Komatsu distributor network to service his equipment when he travels. He appreciates the Komatsu

CARE program, a complimentary, threeyear or 2,000-hour routine maintenance service for Tier IV equipment.

“Although we are a small company, it’s almost like we have our own maintenance staff,” offered Stone. “If I happen to be out of Linder’s territory, other Komatsu dealers perform the work and keep us running.

That’s been one of the coolest things about owning Komatsu equipment.”

Jumping Ahead The nature of his business means that Stone is constantly on the road. His wife, Laura, and son, Link, accompany him and support his efforts to advance the sport he loves.

“I want to hit it hard for a couple more years, as I’m doing now,” said Stone. “I’d like to have some help when my son starts school in two years, so that I’m on the road a little less. I definitely want to keep growing this and see where it goes.”
