Dunedin, Fla., has been the Spring Training home of the Toronto Blue Jays since 1977, and the bond between the city and team was renewed on April 23 when construction began on the $102 million ($96.6 million in construction costs) renovation of the stadium where the Jays play their Grapefruit League games. The project also calls for the expansion of the Player Development Complex, which, like Dunedin Stadium, is shared by the franchise’s local minor league affiliate. The cost of the original $81 million project was covered by $41.7 million from Pinellas County for tourist development; $20 million from the Blue Jays, $13.7 million from the state and $5.6 million from the city. The project’s scope was bolstered by another $20 million from the team and $530,000 from the city. A lease agreement, signed in November 2017 between the Blue Jays, the city of Dunedin, Pinellas County and the state of Florida, has Dunedin Stadium serving as the spring training center for the big-league club and home for the Dunedin Blue Jays for the next 25 years. The new ballpark, whose construction is being managed by Gilbane Building Company, is slated to open in time for the 2020 Spring Training season. Seating at the ballpark will increase from 5,500 to 8,500, and it will feature a boardwalk that wraps around the entire outfield to allow for 360-degree access around the stadium, as well as a large group section in the right field corner to give a ground level view from the outfield. Other amenities include new bars down the third base line, as well as on the new boardwalk in right field; a kids zone in the concourse along the left field side; renovated bathrooms, concessions and suites; a new Jays Shop, Jr. Jays Zone and BBQ tent; additional air-conditioning for the bar along CEG CORRESPONDENT

Carolina Cat Hosts Special Demo Day for Cherokee Indians
C
arolina Cat hosted a three-day, hands-on event in Cherokee, N.C., from Oct. 23 to 25. Days one and two were for the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians; the third day was for local contractors and other customers. About 75 companies came out to test the latest in Cat equipment over the event’s three days. The customers were able to get in the seat and operate many of the newest and latest Caterpillar machines. The machines included dozers, 30-ton excavators, miniexcavators, the 140 motorgrader and compact track loaders. The Next Generation of Cat excavators are built to increase operating efficiency, lower fuel and maintenance costs and improve operator comfort with unique combinations of purpose-built features designed to achieve productivity and cost targets. With the Next Generation Cat 140 motorgrader, options from the cab to controls are in the user’s hands, The Cat 308 CR mini-excavator delivers maximum along with better fuel economy and maintenance costs to power and performance in a mini size to help you lower overall operating expenses. You likely never knew it, but chances are you’ve already seen the fruits of Mirimichi Green’s line of products on television or even while strolling the grounds of the “Happiest Place on Earth.” Based in Wilmington, N.C., Mirimichi Green produces soil amendments, composts and top-end dressing for consumers as large as Major League Baseball, the PGA and Disney World, among others. If a high-end place needs its greens taken care of, they call Mirimichi Green for the company’s expertise in growing and maintaining eco-friendly turf. Established in 2013, Mirimichi Green’s origins can be traced to pop star Justin Timberlake’s mission to make his Mirimichi Green’s products are screened and dropped into the bucket of a Volvo L70H wheel loader for a smooth transport.
Memphis, Tenn., golf course as environmentally conscious as possible. Named “Mirimichi,” a Native American word that translates to “place of happy retreat,” the golf course became the first in the United States to receive official Audubon Classic Sanctuary Certification in recognition of its environmental sustainability. Demand for the luscious greens of the Timberlake family’s golf course birthed the company Mirimichi Green, and the process of their business is as simple as allowing the life cycle of nature run its course. To make its composts, Mirimichi Green collects waste from local disposal facilities or organically from cotton gins, pig farms and elsewhere to break down and cure before it’s sold to lawncare customers around the world. And for a business that generates an estimated two million tons of volume each year — the majority of which gets shipped out in 40-lb. bags — having the right equipment for transportation is crucial. “Volvo machines have been a big help with moving the product around,” Scott King, plant manager of Mirimichi Green, told CEG. “From going to pick it up to getting it here, without Volvo we would have a hard time getting the stuff done that we need.”

Take Advantage of Year-End Tax Benefits on 2019 Purchases By Agako Nouch and Ryan Sherwood SPECIAL TO CEG
If you’re looking to put money back to your bottom line this year, your business could save thousands of dollars on new and used equipment purchases in the United States. Take advantage of available tax incentives created by the government to encourage businesses to buy equipment and invest in themselves. There are similar tax advantage opportunities in Canada as well. Let’s start with the U.S. Section 179 of the IRS Tax Code, which offers eligible businesses a great opportunity to maximize purchasing power. Most of the new and used (must be new to you) equipment your business will purchase or finance will qualify for the Section 179 deduction. Section 179 allows you to deduct the FULL PURCHASE PRICE of qualifying equipment in the year it was put into service. This creates a larger initial expense deduction than using a standard depreciation method, thus reducing the tax burden for the company. Keep in mind, Section 179 cannot result in a net loss. Section 179 Highlights for 2019 Include: • Maximum amount that can be deducted is $1 million. • Maximum amount of equipment purchased (and take the full deduction) is $2.5 million. Section 168(k) allows for bonus depreciation (currently 100 percent expensing) on eligible equipment and property, thus allowing accelerated depreciation for a reduced tax burden, similar to the Section 179 deduction. A company can take both Section 179 and bonus depreciation allowances, but Section 179 must be applied first. Therefore, any qualified property purchased over the $1 million limit may then be taken in bonus depreciation. So it’s great for businesses that spend more than the Section 179 spending limit. Bonus depreciation is scheduled to phase out over the next 7 years (see table below).

Bonus depreciation is ideal for larger businesses who spend more than the $2.5 million purchase cap noted above. • It’s also important to note that equipment must be used for business purposes more than 50 percent of the time to qualify for these deductions. • Businesses with a net loss are still qualified to deduct the cost of new equipment and carry-forward the loss. Let’s look at the tax savings introduced by bonus depreciation, along with Section 179. New/Used Equipment — Tax Year 2019 Equipment Purchases — $1,500,000 Section 179 Deduction — $1,000,000 Depreciable Amount — $500,000 Bonus Depreciation (100 percent of Depreciable Amount) — $500,000 Regular Depreciation — 0 Total First-Year Deduction — $1,500,000 Tax Rate — 21 percent Total First-Year Tax Savings (Section 179 and Bonus
Depreciation) — $315,000 Tax Savings using Section 179 Only — $1,000,000 x .21 = $210,000 Before you take Section 179 and/or bonus depreciation deductions, consult with your tax or legal advisor. In Canada, the Department of Finance has updated the Capital Cost Allowance to allow businesses to immediately expense 100 percent of the cost of certain new machines that are purchased after Nov. 20, 2018, and before 2028 — so this applies to all of 2019. Under new Accelerated Investment Incentive rules, Canadian businesses also are eligible for an enhanced tax depreciation write-off in 2019 of up to three times the amount that would normally apply. For example, if a business purchased equipment for $100,000 and utilized the machine that year, it would be eligible for a first-year write off of $10,000 (10 percent of the capital cost of the equipment). Under the new rules, the business can now claim tax depreciation in the first year of $30,000 (three times the original amount). Court to Weigh in Over Pipeline Across Appalachian Trail By Mark Sherman and Denise Lavoie ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON (AP) The Supreme Court will consider reinstating a permit that was tossed out by a lower court that would allow construction of a natural gas pipeline through two national forests, including parts of the Appalachian Trail. The justices said Oct. 4 they will hear appeals filed by energy companies that want to build the 605-mi. Atlantic Coast Pipeline and the Trump administration, which initially approved the project. The federal appeals court in Richmond, Va., ruled in
December that the U.S. Forest Service has no power to authorize the crossing of the popular trail and had “abdicated its responsibility to preserve national forest resources” when it approved the pipeline crossing the George Washington and Monongahela National Forests, as well as a right-of-way across the Appalachian Trial. The pipeline, proposed in 2014 by Dominion Energy, Duke Energy and other energy companies, would originate in West Virginia and run through parts of Virginia and North Carolina. Under plans for the project, a 0.1-mi. segment of the pipeline would cross more than 600 ft. beneath the
Appalachian Trail. The project has been mired in legal challenges by environmental and conservation groups. Construction has been halted since December. The Southern Environmental Law Center, which successfully challenged the Forest Service permit before the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, said the Supreme Court’s decision to hear the appeal by the pipeline’s developers “doesn’t mean Dominion wins this case.” “The court’s decision to hear this case doesn’t affect any of the multiple other problems that the Atlantic Coast Pipeline has,” said Greg Buppert, a senior attorney with the center. “I think the most important one is the fact that (the pipeline) is not necessary. Dominion and Duke are claiming we need it to run power plants, and that’s not supported by

the evidence we now know about the demand for power in Virginia and North Carolina.” Pipeline spokesman Aaron Ruby disputed that, saying communities in eastern North Carolina and the Hampton Roads region in Virginia are experiencing natural gas shortages. “The region urgently needs new infrastructure to support the U.S. military, manufacturing, home heating and cleaner electricity as we move away from coal,” Ruby said in a statement. Buppert said the Forest Service permit to be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court is “just one of seven permits this project doesn’t have that are required for construction.” “The final route of this project is uncertain, and it’s not clear when or if Dominion will have any clarity on where this project will go,” he said. Ruby, however, said the high court’s decision to hear the case “is a very encouraging sign and provides a clear path forward to resolve this important issue.” The U.S. solicitor general and 16 state attorneys general argued in briefs filed with the high court that the Forest Service has the authority to approve the pipeline’s proposed Appalachian Trail crossing. In its ruling in December, a three-judge panel of the 4th Circuit found that the Forest Service did not have the statutory authority to grant the permit. In a sternly worded decision, the panel found that the Forest Service had “serious environmental concerns” about the project that were “suddenly, and mysteriously, assuaged in time to meet a private pipeline company’s deadlines.” The ruling also quoted “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss, saying the Forest Service is trusted to “speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues.” Ruby said more than 50 other pipelines cross underneath the trail “without disturbing its public use.”

he 2019 Landscape Show was packed with hundreds of exhibitors at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., from Sept. 19 to 21. The event was held by the FNGLA (Florida Nursery Growers and Landscape Association), which is the nation’s largest and oldest state nursery and landscape associations. The annual exhibition brought in more than 7,000 attendees, as the Landscape Show is known as the Southeast’s premier landscape and horticulture conference and trade event. The ‘Real’ Rosie the Riveter — a Case of Mistaken Identity ROSIE from page 1
determination. Her garb is typical of that worn by women working in munitions factories during the period because it kept their hair out of the machines while they worked. Working Women With approximately 16 million Americans serving in the armed forces during World War II, many factories experienced a shortage of workers. In addition, munitions factories needed additional employees. That meant women had to fill them — taking over jobs formerly filled by men. Various sources estimate that between 3 to 6 million women entered the workforce during the war, contributing to the total of 19 million working women. After the war, as men returned from battle, most of the women were expected to return to their everyday lives as housewives or in traditional clerical jobs considered more suitable for women and, coincidentally, paying less. The percentage of women working outside the home fell from a wartime high of 36 percent to 28 percent in post-war 1947. While Rosie the Riveter epitomized industrial welders and riveters, most working women held non-factory positions. The Real Rosie The name Rosie the Riveter first appeared in a song written by Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb in 1942, based on government propaganda and commercial advertising intended to encourage women to volunteer for wartime factory work. The following year Norman Rockwell’s Rosie the Riveter painting was used as the cover of the Memorial Day edition of The Saturday Evening Post and in 1944, Rosie the Riveter became a Hollywood movie. Rockwell’s depiction differs significantly from the Westinghouse poster. In it, a different model strikes a different pose — one that imitates Michelangelo’s Prophet Isaiah on the Sistine Chapel. The almost burly woman is enjoying a sandwich while her rivet gun rests on her lap and her foot rests atop a copy of Mein Kampf. The lunchbox at her side sports the name “Rosie.” Over the years, there has been a dispute about the woman who inspired the Westinghouse image. Rose Will Monroe worked as a riveter at the Willow Run Aircraft Factory in Ypsilanti, Mich., building B-24 bombers and was the subject of a United Press International photo. Many others have claimed a connection, including Naomi Parker Fraley, a waitress from California. Inspirational Image Whoever the muse was behind the renowned image, the idea of Rosie became a symbol of women in the workforce — and later, for women’s independence, for female empowerment … and for the feminist movement. Whether Rosie the Riveter inspired the social movement that
increased the number of working women in America from 12 million to 20 million over the course of four years (1940-1944), leading to the feminist movement of the 1960s is debatable. The Westinghouse poster wasn’t aimed at encouraging women to join the workforce during the war; it was only displayed at factories where women were already working and was just one of many posters created to motivate employees — most of which featured men. Few people saw the poster during the war because it was displayed only to employees at plants in Pittsburgh and certain Midwest locations — and only for two weeks during February 1943. According to All That’s Interesting, there were 1,800 copies of the poster, which were displayed for a mere 10 days in the Micarta resin plants, where workers made synthetic helmet liners for infantrymen. Miller’s poster was stored in the National Archives with other wartime posters and wasn’t brought to light again until 1982 when the Washington Post Magazine ran a retrospective on war propaganda. Ironically, it was not chosen by the Office of War Information for its 1943 War Bonds sale, so its influence as propaganda was limited. However, the image was adopted by feminist activists and publishers due to its fusion of femininity and strength — characteristics championed by the movement. At some point, the name Rosie was mistakenly connected with the poster, but was not associated with it during the war.
Legacy The goal of Miller’s poster was to encourage productivity of all workers — male and female — at Westinghouse factories. Rockwell’s painting may have been more of a commentary on the circumstances of women joining the workforce and, specifically, taking jobs typically filled by men. As with many of Rockwell’s paintings, an aura of patriotism lingers — in this instance, perhaps insinuating that it was a women’s patriotic duty to enter the workforce. Whatever the contemporary meaning behind the Rosie image(s), WWII denoted a turning point for women and could conceivably be considered the foundation for the post-war women’s movement as the American female population proved that they could do a “man’s job.” Some historians and anthropologists believe that this period, which witnessed white women working beside black women, as a precursor to the Civil Rights movement and a breakdown of other social barriers. Rosie lives on today. he annual GIE+Expo Green Industry and Equipment Expo (GIE+Expo) was held Oct. 16 to 18 at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville, Ky. Summer Returns to Ida Grove for GOMACO Invitational #38

pproximately 300 guests from the United States and Canada were welcomed into the city of Ida Grove, Iowa, Sept. 17 to 18 for the GOMACO Invitational #38 to enjoy warm and sunny days of golf. There were 228 participants in the two-person Putting Tournament and 280 in the four-person Scramble Tournament. The GOMACO Invitational is the company’s annual golf event and was held at the Ida Grove Golf and Country Club and three surrounding courses, including Holstein, Mapleton and Odebolt. The GOMACO Invitational began on Sept. 17, at the Ida Grove Country Club, with the Putting Tournament. Teams of two putters were computer generated to participate on four different greens on the course, with the top team from each green advancing to the Putting Championship. This year’s championship team was David Barthel of Faris Machinery in Commerce City, Colo., and Derek Dilger of Smith Paving and Excavating Inc. in Norwalk, Ohio. The Contractors’ Shoot-Out followed the Putting Tournament. The Shoot-Out featured six teams of GOMACO contractors competing in a five-hole competition, with the highest scoring team eliminated on each hole. This year’s Contractors’ Shoot-Out Champions were: Blake Driskell of Gerdan Slipforming Inc. in Cape Girardeau, Mo.; Tim Potts of Graham Construction Inc. in Omaha, Neb.; and Kris Sundell of Nevada Concrete Services in North Las Vegas, Nev. The Invitational Scramble best-ball tournament was held on Sept. 18, on the four area golf courses. Teams of four golfers played 18 holes with each course crowning a champion. The champion teams then played a three-hole scramble tournament at the Ida Grove Golf course to earn the title of GOMACO Invitational #38 “Grand”

Nikki Haley to Give Keynote at Work Truck Show 2020 Nikki Haley, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (2017– 2019), will serve as keynote speaker at The Work Truck Show 2020. Her moderated conversation will take place the morning of March 5, as part of the NTEA Annual Meeting (formerly President’s Breakfast & NTEA Annual Meeting). The 20th annual Work Truck Show, North America’s largest work truck event, runs March 3 to 6 at Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind. Educational sessions, Green Truck Summit and Manufacturer and Distributor Innovation Conference begin March 3, and the exhibit hall is open March 4 to 6. Registration opens in October. As U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Haley helped introduce reforms that made the organization more efficient, transparent and accountable. In a twoyear period, she negotiated more than $1.3 billion in savings, including making UN peacekeeping missions more effective while improv-
ing their ability to protect civilians. She also championed human rights across the globe, standing up to oppressive regimes in Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and Russia. In the UN Security Council, she hosted the first-ever session devoted solely to promoting human rights. Haley spearheaded negotiations for passage of the strongest set of sanctions ever placed on North Korea for its nuclear weapons program, cutting off the regime’s exports by 90 percent and its access to oil by 30 percent. In 2010, Haley was elected as the first female and first minority governor of South Carolina. She was reelected in 2014 and served as governor until becoming U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and joining President Donald Trump’s Cabinet and National Security Council in January 2017. Under Haley’s leadership, South Carolina was a national leader in economic development. Known as the “Beast of the Southeast,� South Carolina’s unemployment rate hit a 15-year low, saw more than $20
billion in new capital investment and created new jobs in every county in the state. Rockster Helps South Carolina Recycling Site Get Started Titan Enterprises, and its sister companies with more than 130 employees, is a large construction company in Virginia. Their main area of business is commercial and residential concrete construction in both the Myrtle Beach and Northern Virginia areas, however CEO Jack Pereira and partners recently acquired a well-equipped recycling site in Myrtle Beach, S.C., which gives the company an opportunity to make their own construction material. Concrete is mainly recycled on site and later re-used for their own projects. New Recycling Center Needs New Machinery To establish the SC Recycling Center was the first step that needed to be done. With Michael Morais, a long-term specialist, on board, the second task was to find the best machinery for the new location and this was not easy. After numerous testing of crushers in the 25-ton range and from various manufacturers, it has been rather clear that Rockster’s impact crusher R900, with its hydrostatic concept, cannot be compared to the others, Titan Enterprises stated. The one thing better than a 730 M-HD log handler is two 730 M-HD log handlers. That’s the decision of the Rettenmeier Holzfabrik GmbH sawmill facility in Hirschberg, Germany. The Hirschberg mill is one of Rettenmeier’s six timber processing plants, where the plant specializes in producing a wide range of softwood construction products, from dimension lumber to laminates. Every Rettenmeier plant shares a common commitment to sustainable processes for sustainable wood products. Hirschberg’s choice of Sennebogen log handlers is a direct reflection of that commitment. According to Sandro Egelkraut, fleet manager at Hirschberg, the mill saw how the 730 M-HD met all its criteria for both productivity and “green” performance in the log yard — and quickly decided to add a second machine. “These machines are extremely durable and therefore very economical. This is why, in discussion with our Sennebogen representative, we decided to purchase a second 730 M-HD for the sorting line.” The two Sennebogen E Series machines fit in perfectly with Rettenmeier’s corporate philosophy: “… sustainability and a positive ecological balance thanks to the lowest possible energy consumption and the use of resources in wood processing.” Sennebogen’s purpose-built pick and carry machines achieve low fuel consumption, low emissions and long service life. The two timber handling machines work together in three shifts, handling 1,000 cubic meters per shift on the sorting line. The 730’s 360-degree swing range minimizes the need for maneuvering between rows of stacked logs, allow faster loading cycles which translate into further eco-efficiencies through a day’s production. Their high-stacking capability, lifting up to 32 ft. (9.7 m) combines with their narrow profile, just 12 ft. (3.6 m) wide, to allow more wood to be stockpiled in less space — another significant saving in cycle times and
operating costs, according to the manufacturer. Egelkraut also attaches great importance to safety at work and again gives a high grade to his 730s. “Since the paths between the stacks are very narrow, the machines need to be especially stable and maneuverable. Those features let our 730s pick and transport loads very safely. Titan Enterprises has a use for every final product size of its recycled concrete, mainly for road construction.
However if demand for recycling increases, Morais and Pereira think of expanding the business to contract crushing. “Since the machines are very easy to transport and easy to handle, which are important factors in this business, we could also crush and screen right at the customer’s job site,” Pereira said. To become even more flexible, they also
keep in mind Rockster’s DUPLEX option. This patented system allows the installation of a jaw crusher unit instead of the impactor on the same machine frame. “With a jaw we could also crush very hard virgin stone with good performance and low wear that would just bring more business opportunities when it comes to different projects.”

The M450s gets its enormous power from a 107 cc Rexroth hydraulic motor with high-pressure variable displacement. A newcogged belt drive transfers it to the rotor. Bite Control System The rotor combines the BCS (bite control system) with two types of cutting tools. Whether steel knivesor carbide teeth, the BCSRotor is best balanced for less wear on bearings and high speed, meaning high productivity and perfect finishing. With the well-tried BCS-Rotor System and its cutting tools, the operator will not only get a professional working result, but also a pleasurable working experience, according to the manufacturer. Furthermore, it provides enhanced visibility to the ground for a good and safe line of site to the working area and the machine. What will the construction machines of the future look like? And how will they perform? After inviting members of the public from around the world to come up with their own inventive concepts, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) and LEGO Technic displayed the incredible results for the first time in FutuRE:BUILD. This exclusive exhibition was at the London Transport Museum in the heart of Covent Garden, London, from May 10 to 16. Highlighting the technical ingenuity of budding engineers young and old, the many entries have been whittled down to the top 10 models chosen by a panel of judges. Together they showcase a broad spectrum of technologies, including driverless automation, 3D printing, solar panels and drones. Inspired by the futuristic vision behind the LEGO Technic Volvo Concept Wheel Loader ZEUX entrants were asked to build their own models using at least 50 percent existing LEGO Technic bricks. And once the wheels were set in motion, the public’s imaginations went wild. Arvid Rinaldo, (Brand Communication & Partnerships) at Volvo CE, said: “We were overwhelmed with just how far people went with their creations. The bestin-show were picked because they prove that the boundaries of our
future construction machines are seemingly limitless. Some of these designs look like they have come straight out of a sci-fi movie. We are at an exciting point in time for the industry and these models are actually not too far removed from what could be coming to our construction sites of the future.” The sheer breadth of concepts on display serve as inspiration to future generations of engineers.

The grand prize winner — Transylvanian native Vida András — is a Romanian architect who was inspired by the challenge of finding an environmental solution to construction machines and presenting that in the most elegant way. His self-driving model, the Volvo Rottweiler is fitted with a pneumatic drill, a dozer and a 3D printer — making it capable of autonomously taking on any con-
struction challenge in the most hard-to-reach places. “To me, the design is not just about playability, it’s about really exploring the potential for future technologies. In my industry, 3D printing is one of the biggest trends at the moment, so I wanted to incorporate that into my model. I have 20 years’ experience playing with LEGO sets. I’ve loved it forever and have always had this con-

fidence that I could sit down and build for hours and eventually it would all come together in the end.” A panel of judges, including members of LEGO Technic and Volvo CE, critiqued the entrants on a number of factors: overall coolness and originality, most inspired details, relevance to the contest theme and best use of LEGO elements. A diverse competition, winners range in ages from 14 to 47 and come from all corners of the globe from the UK to Hungary and the USA to South Africa. Other models on display include Volvo ICARUS, a mobile solar power plant with advanced off-road capabilities, and The Volvo Excavadrone built to operate on land and in the air. third base line and an outdoor bar in right field; and adding special groups areas and a new scoreboard. The Player Development Complex is also being upgraded and tripled in size. When finished, it will include three new full fields for a total of six (one with synthetic turf), five-bay and seven-bay batting cages, two 10-pack gang mounds and a new half-field. The new two-story clubhouse/administration building (110,000 sq. ft.) will have amenities that include a 10,000 sq. ft. weight room; eight locker rooms, two dining rooms and two training rooms; three sports labs, two fuel bars, a movement studio and a barber; a variable depth pool, plunge pools and sauna; a classroom and large conference rooms, several huddle rooms and call rooms; all of the administration offices; and staff collaboration spaces. Discussions between the city and the Blue Jays began in September 2014, and the success of the negotiations was important for the local economy as it is estimated that the stadium and training complex generate $80.3 million in economic benefits annually. “The Blue Jays have a strong relationship with the community of Dunedin going back to 1977 when the team first came to Florida,” said Shelby Nelson, the Blue Jays’ director of Florida operations. “The relationship has continued to grow over the years, and as an organization we are excited to extend this connection with Dunedin for many years to come. Our community is enthusiastic about the opening of the new ballpark, and we look forward to sharing in the joy with our fans. The Blue Jays are proud of their long-standing relationship with the city of Dunedin and Pinellas County. We are the only team in Major League Baseball to have one Spring Training home since 1977. It was important to us to stay in Dunedin and continue to grow in the community.” The ballpark and training center were designed by Populous. “We believe our fans are really going to enjoy all the new amenities around our ballpark,” Nelson said. “After all of our
renovations, we feel we have been able to keep the intimate charm that fans have enjoyed about our ballpark.” To deliver the project, Gilbane, which is not self-performing any work, has brought in many general contractor and subcontractors. Major Contractors for the Player Development Complex (PDC) are Crisdel for sitework, APG for electrical, Randall Mechanical for plumbing and fire sprinkler, B & I for mechanical, OLP for concrete, Masonry Builders for masonry, Harrell for pre-engineered metal buildings, Raynor for framing and drywall, Countryside for glass and glazing, Sutter for roofing and Brightviews for the playing fields. Major Contractors for the stadium are Kimmins for sitework, Pelican for electrical, Sprinklermatic for fire sprinklers, BCH for mechanical and plumbing, Baker for concrete, Richard A. Souder for masonry, Harrell for pre-engineered metal buildings, Raynor for framing and drywall, Crawford Tracey for glass and glazing, Meade for roofing and Brightviews for the playing field. For the stadium, crews have completed all of the demolition; erected the pre-engineered metal building; built the new concessions and restrooms; removed the old seating and railings and are prepping the area for the new seating; started installing the steel and will soon start installing the sod for the field; started work on the 360-degree concourse deck; and poured the foundations and erected the steel for the new scoreboard. For the Player Development Complex, the masonry is nearing the top-out elevation and steel erection has begun; the metal decking for the first elevated deck in Area A has been installed and is awaiting the concrete pour; the four plunge pools for the hydrotherapy area have been set; and the chillers have been set. “We are working on all of the out buildings, including the demolition and renovation of the existing maintenance building where the old batting tunnels were housed,” said see JAYS page 76

All of the fencing around the field, backstops and batter’s eye will soon be going in, as will the fence fabric on field one. “The schedule is our biggest hurdle — we’re always fighting time,” Bruns said. “You are working through a finite timeframe based on when spring training ended to when we could start the demolition and construction. There’s been some rain that has slowed progress and Hurricane Dorian. With such a large site at the Player Development Complex it is crucial to get the storm system completed and tied into the ponds to assist with controlling rainwater. “The stadium site is tight and we have minimal laydown area. Nearly all parking for the workers is offsite both of which complicate the logistics of construction,” he added. “We have an office on-site and the trade contractors have brought in storage containers to store material.” Both sites are located between schools and residential areas, which restricts early morning and night work operations. Due to the weather in Florida, Gilbane prefers to start concrete pours in the early morning hours to miss the prevalent afternoon showers. Weekdays have shifts going from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday crews can work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Relations between the construction team and the Blue Jays are excellent. “We have a standing owner/architect/contractor meeting for both projects where we address and discuss any hot items — requests for information, submittals, mock-ups and other challenges that we’re working through,” Bruns explained. The city is also involved in these discussions.” The stadium upgrade began with the demolition operations. “We cut all utilities to the stadium and then installed all the new ones so that we wouldn’t hit any during the demolition,” Bruns said. “We worked with Duke Energy and the city for all the new connections — sanitary sewer, potable water, fire line and electrical distribution. The challenge for the new construction is the restrictions on work hours. We would like longer work hours during the week and for weekends. However, we are not going to do anything that impacts the neighbors on weekends.” Work on the Player Development Complex clubhouse/administration building is under way. “The foundations are all poured and the walls see JAYS page 87

he Iron Auction Group rolled into Statesville, N.C., on Oct. 24th and made quick work of auctioning off a nice selection of construction equipment, trucks, trailers and miscellaneous support equipment. A terrific turnout of onsite registered bidders and online bidding made for another successful Iron Auction Group sale. The next sale for Iron Auction Group is coming up on Nov. 14 in Cedar Bluff, Va., and is slated to have another quality line-up of machines. CEG

Pending any schedule hurtles with exterior elements, we will temporarily enclose the building as necessary to keep work progressing on the interiors.” To create the three new fields and the halffield, site prep occurred on several hectares. “The fields are very important, and the stakeholder teams review the progress weekly,” Bruns said. “Consultants are sent out to ensure everything is installed per the specifications and we survey the progression of the fields to ensure we are installed correctly and submit that information. We imported roughly 21,000 cu. yds. of earth for the project.” The original site housed a dog park, handball courts and baseball fields which were demolished. New drainage systems, including both wet and dry ponds, have been installed to handle storm water. Bruns was chosen as the project lead by Robert Hayes, Gilbane’s senior vice president and sports/entertainment center of excellence leader. The project team consists of: Robert Tribble, project executive; Ryan
Snow, project manager; Joe Marihart, general superintendent; Forrest Brewer, senior general superintendent; Tom Reilly, general superintendent; Stephen Boyd, project engineer; Brooke Teinert, project engineer; and Jimmy Crouch, senior project safety manager. Based on the size of the project, a tremendous amount of equipment has been used on-site, including the following: JLG lift high reach 600S; Cat mini-excavators, Kobelco mini-excavators; Kubota Bobcat SVL 75 fork lift/lulls; and a JLG skytrack lull. Joey Martin Auctioneers Holds Sale in Blairsville, Ga.

lain and simple: The Joey Martin Auctioneers sale in Blairsville, Ga., on Saturday, Oct. 26 became a mud pit from days and days of heavy rain in North Georgia. But the “show always goes on” and the sale was a HUGE success. Despite the windy and rainy conditions, attendees continued to flow in all morning to register for bidding and by visual estimates. Approximately 500 people were on site and the auctioning process transitioned to an “under the big top tent” sale. Folks from all over the Southeast turned out for some fast-paced bidding while the internet bidding was red hot.
