In September, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Charleston District, awarded the final two dredging contracts on its harbor deepening project, which will make Charleston, S.C.,’s harbor the deepest on the East Coast.

Contractors Serve as First Responders After Hurricane Contractors, equipment dealers and the heavy equipment they provide are infrastructure’s first responders when natural disasters hit.

When Hurricane Laura made landfall in Louisiana on Aug. 27 as a Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 150 mph., its destructive path reached the eastern Gulf Coast and made its way as far north as Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee. Eventually, Laura’s winds abated and became a tropical storm … but not before leaving extensive damage.

The Lake Charles area was hit hard and heavy damage reached all segments of the community and surrounding areas.

As with all hurricanes, cleanup and debris removal work quickly followed.

Clearing roadways is essential so that power companies can assess and repair the damage and residents can return to their homes. Hurricane Laura left nearly one million residents without power.

Bottom Line Equipment, a rental equipment business that has rental locations all along the Louisiana and Texas gulf coasts, is one of the companies playing a crucial role in the recovery effort. It has nearly 200 pieces of heavy equipment out to contractors working on cleanup and power recovery, according to Kurt Degueyter, president of company.

Operating from a base at its Sulphur, La., location, Bottom Line has drawn equipment and attachments from all of its seven locations in Louisiana and Texas to fill the needs of contractors.

Here is where Bottom Line has mobilized equipment for contractors who are working hard to bring normalcy back to the Lake Charles area.

Debris Cleanup Ten debris management sites (DMS) have been established in the region, where fallen trees and other cleanup debris is hauled for grinding into usable mulch.

The teams of Crowder Gulf and Gulf Services are managing two such sites and are being supported by Bottom Line excavators, loaders, dozers, side dumps and water trucks.

The sites were up and running within a week of the storm, according to Lyman Ramsay, president of Gulf Services.

“The idea is to get the material off the street as quickly as possible, so that work can begin on infrastructure,” he said.

The sites typically are about 50 acres in

Man on a Mission: Dealer Focuses on Laura Cleanup There is no better time to “make it happen” than after a natural disaster.

Kurt Degueyter, 53, owner of Bottom Line Equipment is laser-focused on finding solutions for contractors involved in cleanup and recovery after hurricanes, and Hurricane Laura provided the most recent opportunity to do just that.

“Our company motto is just “Make It Happen,” Degueyter said, as he embarked on a tour of the damage from the August 28, 2020, storm with CEG representatives.

“We enjoy being part of the solution,” Degueyter added. “Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans approximately one month after we formed the company, so storm recovery has always been a part of our DNA.” The tour left Bottom Line’s Sulpher, La., service center and Degueyter made his way along I-10 toward the Port of Lake Charles.

Along the way, he explained that disaster recovery is often divided into four sectors: cleanup and demolition, industrial, utility and highway.

He said his company has approximately 200 pieces of heavy equipment deployed in the four sectors.

Arriving at the port, the first glimpse of the storm’s extensive damage was apparent; buildings were down throughout the port with men and equipment grappling with the cleanup work.

Degueyter pointed out a crew using an excavator and shear attachment to break up the remains of a huge metal structure.

Noticing the Bottom Line logo on Degueyter’s truck, the operator motioned him to come over. There were questions about the way the excavator and shear were handling the job, and soon, Degueyter was in the cab, showing the crew a few tricks of the trade to get the most out the equipment (this from a man whose fleet includes 1,400 pieces of heavy equipment and more than 400 specialized attachments, and who has a staff of nearly 200 employees.)

Degueyter grew up in the equipment world; his father, Floyd, is owner of nearby CLM Equipment.

Rather than wait for what might have been a typical succession plan to unfold at CLM, and preferring not to “get a real job,” Degueyter started Bottom Line Equipment out of his house in July 2005 with just two grapple attachments. Thirty days later, Katrina hit and in October 2005, he opened his first service center in St. Rose.

When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans later that year, the need for specialized attachments for cleanup work became clear, and Degueyter was off and running.

None of those hurricanes matched the needs for the operation. Already, within days of the storm, Bottom Line had excavators, intensity of Laura, according to Degueyter.

“It wasn’t talked about much,” he said, loaders, dozers, side dumps and water trucks “but this was a category 4 when it made on the site.

Leaving Lake Charles, Degueyter was landfall. I’ve never seen so much destruction intent on reaching the actual Gulf Coast, on the coastline.”

This is personal for Degueyter — where the small town of Cameron drew the Southwest Louisiana is his family’s home, wrath of the storm’s eye as it made landfall.

Travelling through 30 miles or so of he was watching his equipment do lifesaving work, and he was helping his customers, marshland, there was an eerie feel of loss. who are also his friends, tackle the job at hand. One crew from Georgia had hung a Georgia Bulldog flag from a freshly installed power pole, much to Degueyter’s dismay — he’s an avid LSU fan. “We’ll get that down later,” he said, with a smile.

Approaching Cameron, and dodging houses literally in the middle of the road, Degueyter pulled over when he saw his equipment at work reinforcing a compromised highway. It wasn’t long before he was in the cab of a Cat dozer, diagnosing some minor DEF issues. After a few minutes, he was dispatching another dozer to the site.

“Time is everything,” he said.

The devastation in Cameron was depressing. All homes were destroyed — it would be easy to wonder if the area would ever be populated again. A large offshore oil rig, in the small port for work, was toppled as if it were a 30-ft. sailboat.

Back in Lake Charles, Degueyter checked on a contractor working on residential power lines in a lower income part of the city. He knew he had another excavator/shear package working on taking down damaged lines, and he was intent on checking with the contractor, Diamond D Industries, to see if there were any equipment issues.

Moving road blocks, maneuvering around debris and jumping medians, Degueyter eventually got to the Diamond D crew, working feverishly to restore power to folks who desperately needed it.

As the tour of the Hurricane Laura devastation concluded, another hurricane was gaining strength that could potentially strike eastern Louisiana and Mississippi.

Degueyter was keeping an eye on that, already making plans in case his equipment would be needed to aid in rescue, recovery and restoration. He was poised to ensure that Bottom Line Equipment would “make it happen” again, just in case, good things were needed after a bad thing happened. 

TDOT Will Modify I-24 Interchanges in Chattanooga, Tenn.

State and local officials say construction will soon begin in Chattanooga, Tenn., on another multi-million-dollar modification project on Interstate 24.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) said Oct. 6 that it recently awarded a contract for $31.9 million to Wright Brothers Construction Company Inc. to modify the I-24 interchanges at Tennessee State Route 2/Broad Street and SR 58/Market Street in Chattanooga. The contractor is based in Charleston, Tenn.

The TDOT said the 1.6-mi. project will replace the loops and ramps that serve as exits and entrances for I-24 East and U.S. Highway 27 to Broad Street, Williams Street and Market Street with a new one-way ramp and frontage road.

the Tennessee River, and run parallel to I-24. In addition, the project will include bridge and retaining wall construction and installation of new traffic signals and lighting.

At the interchanges, construction signs have already been installed, and crews are in the very early stages of relocating utilities. This phase of the highway project will last several months, TDOT said. Most of the effort will occur on the south side of I-24 (Lookout Mountain).

The I-24 interchange modifications in the downtown are scheduled for completion on or before Aug. 31, 2023, according to the transportation agency.

TDOT Commissioner Clay Bright explained that the project will improve access to the Historic Foundry District and South Broad commercial corridor.

Chattanooga leaders are thrilled with the continued upgrades to I-24 in their community.

“Providing safe and effective connectivity is important for community access and enhancing economic development,” said Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke. “The new interchange along I-24 will serve as a catalyst for the growth of this important site that will continue to enhance and expand the neighborhood’s footprint.”

His sentiments were seconded by Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger.

“This new interchange will help lead to the revitalization of this part of Hamilton County,” he said in a statement. “We are extremely grateful to TDOT Commissioner Clay Bright for his leadership in making this new interchange happen.”

The I-24 interchange improvements effort was one of 962 critical transportation projects included in the Tennessee’s 2017 IMPROVE Act legislation. 

Beneficial Use Practices Spur Tarheel Company’s Success

Helping others become stewards of the health of the planet, while still operating a successful business, is a dream for many owners and executives.

But, in 1999, J. Gary Steele and his wife, Charlot, did just that when they formed Advanced Residuals Management (ARM) LLC. Their intent was to open a contracting company that built, operated and closed landfills for industrial facilities, before later adding a second line of business in the beneficial use and land application of manufacturing by-products — practices that benefit the environment.

By way of definition, beneficial use is the application of some of the millions of tons of industrial waste that can be turned into a natural or commercial product and doesn’t harm human life or the environment. ARM uses land application to spread by-products on or into soil surfaces, including agricultural fields, forests and mine reclamation sites.

These by-products enrich soil and can supplement or replace fertilizers.

The Steeles still operate ARM along with their son, Brandt, who serves as the company’s president and managing member.

While handling its landfill management work in its formative years, Brandt Steele said ARM also took on the task of finding markets to beneficially use the by-products that were being wasted into landfills but had a benefit to local agricultural communities.

“The beneficial use products that we handle are the by-products from the manufacturing of different types of products,” he said. “What we concentrate on are their agricultural benefits — the nutrient-value benefits — for soils. That could be a nitrogen value, a pH adjustment or a potash [potassium].”

Steele explained that each time paper is recycled, its fibers get shorter and at a certain point in the process it no longer becomes economical to continue recycling. Instead, it is filtered out through the press, meaning a certain percentage of the recycled paper is wasted in the process.

“It happens in de-inking facilities that take in office paper waste and scrub off all the ink on the paper using a lime,” he added. “Although some of the long fibers come through, the larger percentage are made up of the shorter ones.” see BENEFICIAL page 68

Planning for New Bridge Over Miss.

River Continues Louisiana officials say there is small progress being made in getting a new bridge over the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge.

The Capital Area Road and Bridge District (CARBD), a seven-member panel, met Sept. 28 to get an update from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) on what first steps have been taken and about the potential economic impact of a new bridge.

The panel is trying to come up with ways to launch a bridge to ease daily traffic backups in the Baton Rouge area.

The DOTD finalized its $5 million contract with Atlas Technical Consultants in the first week of July. The project management company is a few months into its first phase of “enhanced planning.” The goal of this phase is to narrow

A series of other traffic and environmental studies are beginning to take shape as part of the proposed plan, but any bridge construction is still years away.

“We’ve made significant progress to date in I guess two and a half months,” said Kara Moree of Atlas.

She added Atlas will use these recent studies and data collected in earlier studies as they work with the DOTD on the project.

Atlas is drafting criteria for the potential bridge and the roads leading up to it. The drafts include the five crossing points that have previously been studied by the DOTD, all of which connect LA Highway 1 on the west side of the river in Baton Rouge with LA Hwy. 30 on the east side.

Paul Vaught, assistant bridge design administrator of the DOTD, said his agency is also looking at a few new potential crossing points in the same area.

“As significant of a project as this will be to the region, it’s imperative to ensure that whatever location that we choose has been thoroughly considered and vetted,” he continued.

Atlas has nearly two years to narrow down potential crossing locations to three choices. The final choice of a location could take another two years, meaning actual construction is four years away, at the earliest.

It was previously estimated that construction of the bridge would cost around $1 billion.

In the coming weeks, Moree said, Atlas will meet with key stakeholders, like the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Coast Guard, as it crafts its draft plans. She said her firm also is working on a website to engage the public and receive feedback as the project develops. 

Building Begins On UCA Arts Center, Gets $3M Donation The University of Central Arkansas (UCA) in Conway on Oct. 9 announced a new $3 million donation from the Alice L. Walton Foundation as it broke ground on its new 100,000sq.-ft., $45 million Windgate Center for Fine and Performing Arts.

Of the $3 million, one-third will go toward construction of the center. Another $1 million will establish an endowment for ongoing facility maintenance, and the rest will support arts education programming at UCA. Representatives with the foundation did not attend the groundbreaking due to COVID-19 restrictions, but UCA President Houston Davis read the following statement on their behalf: “The Alice L. Walton Foundation is delighted to join the University of Central Arkansas, Windgate Foundation and other project partners in strengthening access to high quality arts education for students and future leaders. These expanded and modernized facilities in the heart of central Arkansas will foster collaboration and expression essential to preserving our dynamic and vibrant arts and cultural community.”

The foundation is led by Walmart heir Alice Walton, who founded Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and The Momentary, both in Bentonville, Ark. The philanthropic organization seeks to increase access to the arts, improve education, enhance health and advance economic opportunity.

In January 2019, the Windgate Foundation gave the university $20 million — the largest such gift in the school’s 113 years — for the fine arts center.

Davis said the open-concept building will include a creative quad and sculpture garden, a gallery, a 175-seat black box theater and a 450-seat concert hall, which will be the only one-room open concept venue in central Arkansas. The center will feature “much needed” classroom, studio, performance, rehearsal and design spaces, he added.

The center will be at the corner of Donaghey Avenue and Bruce Street and is set to open in Fall 2022. Little Rockbased Baldwin & Shell Construction Co. is the project’s general contractor. The architects are WER Architects of Little Rock and Pfeiffer Partners in New York.

Davis said the Windgate donation “trumpeted the quality of our faculty, our programs, our students and our alumni to the world but raised the bar for our institution and provided a pathway that led us to this great event.”

Windgate Foundation representatives did not attend due to the pandemic, but Davis read a statement from foundation Executive Director Patricia Forgy: “I know that participation in and exposure to art is crucial to a student’s development. It can improve cognitive ability, critical thinking, concentration and teamwork. A student can explore, learn, and fail, try again and gain confidence. In the real world, a student who has participated in art brings highly sought-after expertise to employers, such as creative problem solving and collaboration skills. And these things just scratch the surface of the benefits of an art-filled education.

“The center will transform the arts on campus, providing an exciting new space for exploring collaborative opportunities, not only for students but for the entire region.” 

Komatsu Mining ‘Gets Smart’ Building New Headquarters

In Milwaukee, new technology is helping transform an old building site.

The construction of Komatsu Mining Corporation’s $285 million headquarters is widely considered a good idea because the redeveloped property will be an attractive addition to the Harbor District.

More to the point, it is a smart idea because it showcases Komatsu’s Smart Construction technology.

“This is the first time for Komatsu using smart technology to construct a Komatsu facility. It’s a demonstration of the technology,” said Jason Anetsberger, the company’s smart construction senior manager.

Komatsu excavators and dozers are performing tasks using Intelligent Machine control systems. Drones are providing eyes in the sky and collecting data for the company’s Dashboard management system. Managers and crews are getting real-time information from Dashboard so that their 3D plans and management tools always reflect what’s happening on the ground.

Heads up: If this sounds like a technology fashion event — a promenade just for show — think again.

“The key thing here is, tech for tech’s sake is not a win,” Anetsberger said. “You can buy a hundred different apps and not make your life any better. We are using tech solutions that are impactful to the contractor. We’ve heard from contractors and they want to do more with their manpower, do it more efficiently. They want to replace inefficient processes. That desire for more efficiency is what’s driving these solutions.” ** The 58-acre construction site was rendered a brownfield by successive industrial users. Some of its contaminated soil was trucked away during a $16 million cleanup that preceded Komatsu’s purchase of the property. Charleston, S.C., Will Have East Coast’s Deepest Harbor In September, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Charleston District, awarded the final two dredging contracts on its harbor deepening project, which will make Charleston, S.C.,’s harbor the deepest on the East Coast.

The contract awards also coincided with the arrival Sept. 20 of the CMA CGM Brazil, a 15,072-TEU containership stretching 1,200 ft. long, and the largest containership to ever call on the East Coast and Charleston harbor.

Charleston was the last stop on its East Coast itinerary, because the harbor’s depth permitted full loads before the ship made the return trip back to its home port in Shenzhen, China.

Located midway along the state’s Atlantic coastline, the Charleston Harbor also supports a vital defense mission and is one of the nation’s 17 strategic ports for national defense.

Valued at $597 million, the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project, known as Post 45, takes Charleston’s federal entrance channel to 54 ft., the lower harbor to 52 ft. and the upper harbor to 48 ft.

“The primary purpose of this project is to address transportation inefficiencies resulting from tide restrictions,” said USACE Lt. Col. Rachel Honderd, district commander, at the South Carolina Port Authority’s (SCPA) press conference welcoming the large containership. “It’s to enable new Neo-Panamax vessels like the CMA CGM Brazil into the Charleston harbor.”

Post 45, which began as a feasibility study in 2010, kicked-off the project’s construction phase in early 2018. The four-year, fivecontract deepening operation is projected to complete all dredging construction in 2022.

“Taking a project of this scale and impact from a feasibility study to completion in 12 years and within just six years of its federal construction authorization is a testament to the vision of the Port, the cooperation of local leaders and the determination and professionalism of the Charleston District and the Army Corps of Engineers,” Honderd said.

The short and long-term economic impacts of this project both locally and for the nation are far-reaching.

“The project has a benefit-to-cost ratio of 6.4,” explained Honderd. “In other words, the project gives $6.40 to the state and

national economies for every $1 invested.”

9, Contract 4 deepens the portion of lower harbor connecting the Cooper River from the confluence with the Wando River to the SCPA’s new Hugh K. Leatherman, Sr. Terminal on the Cooper River to 52 ft. Contract 4 was awarded for approximately $53 million to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Construction of Oak Brook, Ill. Later in the month, the USACE’s Charleston District awarded the fifth and final deepening contract, for an estimated $32 million, to Marinex Construction Inc. of Charleston. Contract 5 deepens the stretch of upper harbor to 48 ft. from the new terminal to the North Charleston Terminal.

Combined, these two contracts remove nearly 10 million cu. yds. of material from the harbor floor.

Beyond the project’s projected completion in 2022, the project team will continue to focus on environmental monitoring and mitigation, accounting for and properly mitigating impacts to wetlands, historical resources and hardbottom habitat, said Jeremy Johnson, Post 45’s project manager.

The USACE has maintained Charleston’s harbor for more than 140 years, dredging it every year since, to ensure the channel is at the required federal project depth.

“As we ring in our district’s 150th anniversary in South Carolina next year, we hope to continue the important work of maintaining Charleston’s harbor for the next 150 years,” Honderd said. 

Concours Club Shows Importance of Speedway Paving

For many people, from teenagers to senior citizens, the idea of tromping the accelerator of a hot car and going as fast as possible is invigorating.

Perhaps just going fast is not enough. Showing off your skills might be even better.

The best of both worlds is on display at the new speedway at The Concours Club in Miami.

Of course, there’s a catch. You must be a member to use the track. Founding Memberships sold out at $350,000 each.

The Club is accepting a limited number of membership applications. The initiation fee is $150,000 with $35,000 in annual dues.

People who can afford the membership also can probably afford a high-performance car to drive at the track. High-performance driving requires a quality track; that’s why The Concours Club called on Advanced Materials Services (AMS) and Ajax Paving to design and build the track. Brian Prowell, principal engineer of AMS has supervised the construction of more than 30 racetracks, and Ajax Paving in Troy, Mich., has extensive experience in building speedways used by NASCAR. Precision paving was required when the track was built during February and March 2019. The costs of the completed project will be approximately $220 million.

The Club called for a 2-plus mi. road course track to be built with multiple configurations. The speedway is similar to the course in Watkins Glen, N.Y., which Ajax also paved.

The Concours Club course is not banked, so amateur drivers can test their skills and their vehicles, plus have a lot of fun in the process.

Building a speedway has its own unique set of challenges that make it different from construction jobs on an interstate or state highway.

“The quality on this job was one of the best of any project we’ve been a part of,” said Prowell. “While a normal freeway job must be concerned with sustaining the weight of trucks [downward forces], speedway paving has to be concerned with the shear [lateral forces] and stickiness of the racecar tires. The high speeds, wide tires and sharp turns demand a hard aggregate to maintain the pavement’s surface characteristics over time.”

The smoothness of the track is vitally important. Where a slight bump on the freeway doesn’t matter to a semi or normal passenger car, the same bump can create problems for an expensive car hugging the road at high speed.

“Smoothness of the track and uniformity of friction were critically important in the paving process,” said Prowell.

“That’s one reason why we required quality granite for the coarse aggregate. Its hardness means that it does not lose friction over time as other aggregates might.”

The Concours Club speedway is more than 2 mi. of road course built with multiple configurations. The course is not banked, so amateur drivers can test their skills and their vehicles.

Prowell noted that Ajax Paving used a Vogele paver with a tamping bar screed to meet the high standards required for the job.

“This paver pre-compacted the asphalt mix and helped the team build a smoother road and meet the high- density requirements,” said Prowell.

Long Trip From Michigan Ajax Paving trucked its equipment from the Detroit area, a trip of nearly 1,400 mi., because of the team’s confidence that the machines could do the job. The paving team also brought along a full-time mechanic in case of breakdowns.

The tracks were constructed adjacent to the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport meaning noise restrictions were not a problem and permitting was greatly simplified.

“Because smoothness was so important, we used a Weiler material transfer vehicle,” said Tim Hay, project manager of Ajax. “This guaranteed a steady flow of material into the paver and also meant that we would not have any trucks bumping the paver. That helps prevent segregation in the mix.”

Ajax tried to keep delays minimized for the paver for days that started at 6 a.m. and ran until 5 p.m. The paving team produced a 20-ft.-wide new road. However, the speedway see CONCOURS page 36

Self-Confidence Guides Bishop’s Success With Dynapac

Jennifer Bishop has always been one to go toeto-toe with the toughest issues in her professional life. And, inevitably, her self-confidence and perseverance lead her to success.

That fire within Bishop has also led her to a new position in 2020 as Dynapac North America’s dealer sales manager for the Southeast following a 16year-long career with the company. Her sales territory has quite a range, from the two Carolinas west to Tennessee and Mississippi and back east to Florida.

Dynapac, the Swedish/German manufacturer of compaction, paving and milling equipment for road construction worldwide, supports the U.S. market from its North American headquarters in Fort Mill, S.C., just across the state line from Charlotte, N.C. Bishop was an important part of the rollout as the marketing communications manager. Her new role is to increase Dynapac’s market share in the Southeast.

“From 2013 to 2017, during our previous ownership, Dynapac equipment went through a complete rebrand,” Bishop explained. “That changed when we were purchased by the Fayat Group, the French global construction company, and we were able to re-establish the Dynapac brand in 2018.”

Today, Dynapac’s compaction machinery includes a variety of different types of rollers, as well as a tamping compactor. The manufacturer’s paver models include those for compact, city, commercial and highway work. Large tracked pavers and wheeled pavers also are part of the product line, as well as mobile feeders and screeds.”

Pandemic Forced Bishop to Adapt When Bishop was promoted to her new role in mid-March, she at once faced a huge challenge.

An important requirement of her job was crisscrossing the Southeast to market Dynapac’s line of equipment. But Bishop, like most Americans, had to adapt her work around the coronavirus.

“My new role started two days after ConExpoCon/AGG ended and we all know what happened then,” Bishop recalled. “So, COVID-19 has been kind of a challenge on my new outside sales role, having to adhere to coronavirus regulations from state to state.”

Dynapac Sales Starting to Ramp Up Now, Bishop has started to see a breakthrough in placing Dynapac machines into dealerships and increased retail sales of the compaction and paving lines.

“We recently sold a CT3000 tamping compactor with our Tennessee dealer, Heavy Machines, a new product offering for the distributor,” she said. “It’s a massive machine that can almost replace three 84inch soil rollers and includes a strike-off blade. The unit has been extremely successful in the Texas market, where contractors there love them. So, the seeds have been replanted in the Southeast market.”

material transfer feeder, another new product in the North American market that has been available in Europe for several years. The core of the three Dynapac MF2500 models is their high-performance conveying system, which can transport 30 tons of gravel, sand or asphalt to its destination in just 35 seconds.

‘Accidental’ Executive The drive and determination found within Bishop is most impressive when you consider she entered the construction equipment sales and marketing field 16 years ago with no experience in the industry.

In her words, she said she got into the business “purely by accident.”

“I was in school part-time and working for a professional recruiter,” she explained. “The position at Dynapac in San Antonio came across my desk and, honestly, I wanted to work closer to home to be near my children. The rest is history. I was the sales coordinator for heavy compaction at Dynapac, at that time headquartered just outside San Antonio, Texas.”

When asked if the new position presented much of a learning curve for her, she laughed and responded, “I would say so.”

She credits the people she worked with during her 16-year career in the construction equipment industry with believing in her abilities and selfreliance — the traits she needed to flourish in the business.”

“I think what is unique about me is how well rounded I am within this organization,” she continued. “I have been in inside sales, after-market support marketing, and now two outside sales roles.”

Forget Gender, Bring Knowledge Her own boatload of self-confidence also helped her succeed in the construction equipment industry, one that has traditionally been a male dominated field.

“Well, I will say it was a trial by fire,” she admitted. “But I’ve had a lot of positive influences and mentors throughout my career in the construction equipment industry.”

The fact that Bishop is a woman marketing construction equipment has always been a non-issue for her because of the certainty she has in her abilities and the fact she possesses a storehouse of industry knowledge.

To Bishop, that is what is most important when dealing with customers, no matter your gender.

“At the end of the day you must know what you’re talking about and provide help with the issues customers are experiencing,” she said. “You need to be a problem solver for them. They don’t care if you are a male or a female, they just want to know that you know your products and you understand how to support them by working side by side as partners.

“To me, the fun part of my job is the problem solving —h elping customers and contractors come up with the solutions they need to work faster, safer and more efficiently.”  CEG

required a 40-ft.-wide road, almost double the width of two lanes of a traditional freeway. That meant a joint was created where the two new lanes met. Again, smoothness between the two “lanes” was crucial.

“We cut into the joint vertically between the two lanes and applied sealer to bind the two lanes together tightly,” said Hay. “A poor joint can allow water to seep into the road and degrade the road over time as well as affect the smoothness.”

The circuit was new construction and required approximately 30,000 tons of asphalt. The nearest airport runway was about one-half mi. away, which enabled the Ajax team to construct some unusual safety features.

“We built some large run-off areas so that if a driver lost control on a turn, he could slow down safely,” said Hay. The Ajax paving team constructed the road in three stages — the first, a 2-in. base course, the second a 1.5-in. leveling course, the third, a 1.5-in. surface course. The base asphalt mix was the equivalent of a standard Superpave mix used in interstate work. The leveling and surface mixes were a specialty racetrack mix, somewhat similar to an airport mix, but

with more polymer and adjusted to increase in-place density.

Ajax took another unusual step in grinding down any bumps in the leveling course.

“We believed that would help us to make the final course as smooth as possible,” said Hay. “In the end, we were able to meet all the smoothness requirements.”

Another challenge for the designers of the speedway was contending with the intense heat generated by the tires’ friction with the road.

“We used a mix that had a high polymer liquid content so the road could handle the heat,” said Hay. With a normal mix, workers can rake loose asphalt into place to fix any imperfections. “That mix is hard to work with because it is so stiff.”

For some of the tight turns, all the cars will be braking heavily, then making sharp turns at the same spot. The stiffer mix should prevent ruts from forming and the road deteriorating over time, according to Ajax.

ish rollers further back. The team’s experience with speedways and outstanding performance from the equipment enabled them to meet all requirements.

“Our guys were proud of this project,” said Hay. “It was great to know that we completed a job that not many paving teams are capable of doing.”

Transporting Material The paving team relied on the steady production of asphalt from General Asphalt of Miami. The plant that produced the mix was just 10 mi. from the construction site.

“The mix required 20 to 25 percent granite, which is not usually required by most Florida operations, so we needed to bring it in from Georgia,” said Albert Lopez of General Asphalt. “We also had to get the polymer required and have it available. We were able to meet the requirements for air voids and volumetric targets as required.

“It was fun to be involved in a project like this,” added Lopez. “The amount of testing done was at least five times what is normally done. The experts challenged us, and we were able to deliver a mix to their exacting standards.”  CEG

Curb Roller Manufacturing, a manufacturer of shaped concrete roller screeds, offers the Batt Screed 6000 battery-powered roller screed.

The lightweight, versatile roller screed operates with no cords, hoses or fumes, offering enhanced mobility, precision and efficiency to contractors of all sizes, according to the manufacturer.

The Batt Screed eliminates the hassle of working around a cord and the added weight of an engine mounted on the screed.

The unit gets its power from a removable and rechargeable 60-volt lithium ion DeWalt FLEXVOLT battery. Contractors may be familiar with this line of batteries and their versatile use in smaller or heavy-duty cordless tools like hammer drills or cutoff saws. One fully charged battery is estimated to screed off 1,800-2,500 sq. ft., depending on the slump and pipe length.

By eliminating an auxiliary power source, the Batt Screed 6000 can be operated almost anywhere. Unlike gas, electric and hydraulic roller screeds, the Batt Screed eliminates exhaust fumes, power cords and the need for hydraulic power sources, making it practical for indoor operation or use in tight spaces.

The Batt Screed easily accommodates jobs from 3 to 22 ft. with expandable tube inserts, making it highly versatile. This flexibility makes it ideal for both small and large jobs including bike trails, golf cart paths, garage pads, shed floors, grain bin pads and parking lots.

Because roller screeds spin the concrete into shape versus vibrating the concrete, larger aggregate, and more of it, remains near the surface of the slab, providing increased structural integrity. Conversely, vibrating screeds use vibration to form the concrete which often causes the aggregate to fall to the bottom of the slab, leaving the concrete more open to

spalling.

With a lightweight design and a folding handle, the Batt Screed 6000 is easy to operate and transport. The smart and simple design includes an adjustable right- or left-hand speed control, variable speed in both high and low ranges, and a three-position handle that allows for a more ergonomic operation for operators.

The multi-position handle gives operators more versatility when it comes to obstacles or limiting factors during a pour.

For example, if a contractor is pouring a driveway, they can position the handle outward to allow them to walk outside of the forms.

The Batt Screed design includes a heavy-duty kickstand that enables the operator to leave the screed free-standing during a pour. Other screeds that don’t have this feature risk being set in wet concrete or dust, which can be detrimental to the operation of the machine, according to the manufacturer. The kickstand increases the cleanliness and longevity of the unit.

The Batt Screed’s kickstand and handle fold and lock away for compact and lightweight transport without removing the battery, reducing the risk of broken parts during transport. The Batt Screed features strong connection points that help prevent unnecessary wear or breakage.

The single pin connection on both ends allows the operator to remove the pipe from the handles in less than 60 seconds.

The quick assembly and break down of the Batt Screed enhance productivity enabling contractors to complete more projects each day.

The construction of Komatsu Mining Corporation’s $285 million headquarters in Milwaukee showcases Komatsu’s Smart Construction technology.

The 58-acre construction site was rendered a brownfield by successive industrial users. Some of its contaminated soil was trucked away during a $16 million cleanup that preceded Komatsu’s purchase of the property.

building’s steel frame has been erected. Pouring of concrete in the parking structure was due to be finished by the end of September.

“Winter is coming so we need to get as much done as we can,” the project manager said.

Construction work won’t cease when snow begins to fly in Milwaukee.

“We are getting into the months where work doesn’t proceed as efficiently as we would like,” said Rodenkirch. “Concrete is going to be poured all the way through winter. You just have to put in winter provisions such as using hot water in the mix and blankets to keep the heat in the concrete pour during the initial curing process. We just keep moving forward.”

The contractor does stipulate minimum temperatures for doing roofing work for the safety of workers laboring up there.

Some 60 laborers were on site in mid-September, but that number will ramp up to 125 to 150 as exterior and interior work proceed together. Hunzinger will see completion of the job, if the project stays on schedule, by the summer of 2022.

From the point of view of Anetsberger, the showcasing of Komatsu’s advanced technology is going well. The various smart tools are proving their worth, as evi-

denced by Rodenkirch’s ease of accounting for the relocation of spoiled material using Dashboard.

“Using pen and paper, it’s hard to share and update and distribute information,” Anetsberger said.

“Once the information is digital and in 3D displays, we can measure our progress and update it quickly as conditions change. One you get past the hurdle of change, it is so much easier this way to measure and modify and share data.”

The bottom line is that the work gets done at lower cost.

“The 3D system is driving cost savings across the industry.

Contractors are saving money and project owners are saving money.

We are the ultimate customer on this particular site and we’re reaping real benefits from our smart technology. It’s a win-win for us.”

Komatsu Intelligent Machine control is guiding the blades and buckets of dozers and excavators.

“We not only are benefiting from more accurate digging, but also by being able to quickly change our excavation planning when we encounter the unexpected, like all that rubble,” said Anetsberger.

And the drones…?

“The site is being mapped on a weekly basis,” said Anetsberger.

“So instead of walking over soggy ground and dodging construction machinery to gather information,

we’re using the drones to map it in a fraction of time so we can share the information with contractors.”

While the Komatsu headquarters site is relatively small as developments go — think of the hundreds of acres in real estate divisions — Anetsberger believes drones are valuable on any project.

“The bigger the site, the bigger the benefit, but you can realize great efficiencies using the drone regardless of size. Tracking material, for instance, and avoiding disputes about what has been moved,” he said.

He believes smart construction technology can pay for itself on a single project “but the biggest benefit for a contractor is the new standard of efficiency that’s set.

Contractors adopt it for one project, learn what they need to learn and then make it standard operating procedure. We don’t want to overload a contractor. We don’t want to try to change anyone’s world in one leap. Rather, we recommend they try Intelligent Machines first, then a Smart Construction solution and so on.

When contractors do it step by step, they have great success.”

It is not true that the technology targets big “Class A national contractors,” Anetsberger said. “We’re interested in providing solutions that can be adopted by big contractors and mom-and-pop builders

and all those companies in between.”

Hunzinger Construction is pretty big, generating some $325 million in annual business volume. The company’s project manager on this project is pretty experienced: He’s a 28-year veteran of the industry.

Yet this job is the first in which Rodenkirch has utilized the Komatsu Dashboard site management tool and related technologies.

“Will the technology be beneficial for other projects? Absolutely,” he said. “We’re always looking at new things that will be a good fit for us. Technology that lets an operator stay in the backhoe and constantly dig is so efficient.

Bulldozer operators, the same thing. Technologies that let operators do the job one time and do it correctly increase efficiency.”

Rodenkirch seems to be enjoying the learning experience and appreciates what Komatsu brought to the project.

“The company has been a real team member and in construction you have to have a team atmosphere to be successful. I think we’re a great team,” he said.

Anetsberger believes Komatsu “is unique in that we are traditionally all about iron but now we’re pairing our equipment with these solutions. We’re leading a charge here. We’re innovating the industry. We’re trying to transform the job site.”  CEG

Deere 700L, 750L Dozers Enhance Productivity, Comfort Addressing the needs of the modern operator, the new John Deere 700L and 750L dozers feature improvements to productivity, reliability and operator comfort. Inspired by customer feedback, the updates include an all-new operator station, increased power levels, low-effort electrohydraulic (EH) controls and a suite of factory grade control solutions.

“When developing the 700L and 750L, we leveraged feedback from contractors around the world.

These next generation dozers are the most productive, reliable and easiest to operate yet,” said Nathan Horstman, product marketing manager, crawlers, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “These new models merge power and technology to deliver an easy-to-use, comfortable dozer that is built to run all day.”

The 700L and 750L deliver more power than the previous K-Series models, boasting 135 hp(101 kW) and 175 hp (131 kW), respectively. As a result, both models have more power than any dozer in their respective size class, according to the manufacturer.

The new crawler dozers are equipped with a sixcylinder, 6.8-L John Deere engine. Additionally, the 750L operating weight is increased by 750 lbs., providing more tractive effort and better balance to improve machine performance. The dozers are available with new, wider blade options, including a 161-in. option, the widest blade offered in the 750-size class.

Integrated spill sheets on the 700L machine further increase blade capacity.

Both dozers can be equipped with a new factoryinstalled slope control offering. Slope control makes grading easy by automatically maintaining the blade angle without the need for an external laser or GPS reference. This enables novice operators to be more accurate and veteran operators to hold grade with less effort. The slope control machines are also SmartGrade-ready, creating an easy upgrade path to a full 3D mastless system in the field.

The new operator station is a ground-up redesign with a focus on visibility and operator comfort.

Featuring 15 percent more volume and 14 percent larger door openings, the new operator station is spacious and easy to access, and it offers better visibility to the blade.

Standard ergonomically designed EH controls reduce operator fatigue and allow for effortless grade control installation in the field. Other comfort-boosting machine options include a premium heated and ventilated seat, rear camera and automatic temperature control, keeping operators comfortable even during long days.

A new, 7-inch color monitor can interchange to show grade control information as well. Operator comfort is further improved through lower cabin sound levels on both models, including a 50 percent reduction in noise on the 700L versus the previous model.

To increase uptime, these next generation dozers have optimized hydraulic hose and electrical harness routings to reduce the possibility of rub points.

Additionally, hydraulic and hydrostatic oil change intervals are extended to 4,000 hours, reducing operating cost.

Itawamba County Job Completes Final Portion of ADHS Corridor V EUTAW from page 1

sified excavation material will have to be moved from one position to another, and 1,298,626 cu. yds. of off-site borrow excavation material will be hauled into the project.

“The project will complete the final portion of ADHS Corridor V, which runs from Interstate 55 in Batesville to Interstate 24 in Chattanooga, Tenn., connecting intermodal facilities in the three states, including the Port of Huntsville and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway,” said Brian Ratliff, MDOT’s chief engineer. “Corridor V links automotive and furniture manufacturing industries in the Mid-South. The increased capacity will help carry anticipated increases in freight traffic, especially between Toyota in Blue Springs and the Toyota-Mazda site in Huntsville, Ala.” Presently, a 2.5 mi., 4-lane section of Corridor V stretches into Mississippi from Alabama.

The extension is needed because freight traffic along Corridor V currently has to use a 13-mi. section of two-lane SR 23 when traveling from Interstate 22 to Alabama. “MDOT’s number one priority is the safe and efficient movement of goods and people,” said Melinda McGrath, MDOT executive director. “This final phase of Corridor V will take freight traffic off two-lane highways and move it to fourlane highways specifically designed for this purpose.”

The project is being funded in part by a $52.4 million Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant.

The new highway will have an asphalt riding surface (approximately 151,000 tons) and concrete bridges. The roadway was designed by Neel Schaffer and the bridges were designed by Michael Baker International Consulting Engineers.

The high-volume change soil encountered on the project will be removed and backfilled with a specified borrow material (Cl B9-6). All of the subgrade material will be chemically treated to a depth of 6 in. and will be topped with a 7.75-in. layer of granular material. The top 6 in. will be cement treated.

The asphalt pavement structure will consist of four lifts of pavement for a total asphalt thickness of 7.75 in. The total structure thickness is 13.75 in. The road structure is based on a 20-year asphalt lifespan.

The extension is being built on former farm land, forests, fields and some rural residential land. It also crosses four tributary streams, which are habitats of some freshwater mussels.

The operations at the stream crossings require minimizing the impacts to the water and species inhabiting them.

Current construction activities continue to focus on clearing land, performing earth work and preparing the subbase for the new highway, bridge construction and installing drainage.

“Starting the job is always a challenge,” said Stephen Burdine, Eutaw’s project manager, whose firm secured the contract last March. “Secondly, we were battling the weather for the first two months of the project. The rain impacted the earth work, but in the last two months the weather has coop-

erated and that allowed us to get ahead of schedule through strategic planning and extended hours.”

No soil, water or utility issues have been encountered thus far.

“We’re out in the middle of the woods,” said Burdine. “The soil conditions are pretty good for the job, and we haven’t had much issue there. Right now, it’s strictly day time work. We have a schedule and a plan as to how the job is to be constructed. And everyone has fallen into it — we’re working to complete it.”

Construction surveying is still ongoing for the nearly 480acre site. A virtual map has been created for the layout of the highway, bridges and drainage infrastructure. This has been supplemented by excavators, dozers and scrapers equipped with GPS systems.

So far close to140 acres have been cleared and excavated.

“We have a 340 to go,” said Burdine. ‘We’re logging marketable timber. One thing that has hindered us on logging has been the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lumber mills are not taking as much logged timber as they normally would due to all the mills Stephen Burdine running at half capacity and half staff.”

Eutaw Project Manager The trees are being harvested by a subcontractor, HW Watson and Son Logging Inc., which is using Tiger Cat 620s and 720s to cut and drag the fallen trees and John Deere log loaders to load out logs. The logging process is based on creating access roads for the equipment that will open the site for earth work operations. Until the timber can be sent for processing, it is being stored onsite. The harvesting operation removes the tree stumps, making it easier for the earth work to proceed rapidly.

The tree removal process has reached the point where earth work, site preparation (subbase), drainage installation and bridge crews can work simultaneously and construction equipment and materials can easily access and exit the work site.

“The earth work operations are going smoothly,” said Burdine. “We’re dealing with mainly sandy soils and some heavy clay deposits. Other than the heavy clays, the materials encountered are ideal for earth moving equipment.”

The material being excavated is being re-used on-site as fill for the fields. Equipment fitted with GPS systems is ensuring that specifications for the road base and drainage infrastructure are easily being attained.

“It has made construction projects a lot easier as far as constructing roadbed,” said Burdine. “We were able to get it within tolerance without having to conventionally stake the project. We have three different equipment earth work crews using four Cat 631E scrapers; two Cat 631D scrapers; three Cat 627B scrapers; four John Deere 9620s; and two Case IH 580s — all with double pans; three Volvo A40G articulated dump trucks; one Komatsu PC 490 LCI-11 excavator; three Komatsu 360 LCI-11 excavators; two Cat D9R dozers; two Cat D8T dozers; five Komatsu D61 PXI-24 dozers; and

ARM has a proprietary blend it uses to mix these materials together to come up with several products, most of which are given away to farmers. Even if they are charged, depending upon their area and the economics, it’s still a low-cost alternative to the fertilizer that they would typically buy, Steele said.

“The win-win is that it's cheaper for the manufacturing facility, cheaper for the farmers and we make money by handling it in the middle,” he said. “On top of that, the manufacturing plants get good PR in their community and the endusers — the farmers and the landowners — really like the product because they’re saving a lot of money and getting the product’s benefit.”

ARM Utilizing Hyundai ‘Beasts’ At a typical delivery site, ARM may haul in a product line made up of short paper fibers, lime and clay. After taking it to a farmer, company crews begin the process of using its tractors and loaders to spread it onto the soil at an equivalency rate of one ton of agricultural lime.

ARM has utilized different brands of wheel loaders and excavators over the years, but Steele said the company and its managers have learned that Hyundai equipment is their preferred choice.

Among ARM’s rolling stock are 16 Hyundai loaders, ranging from the model HL940 up to the model HL980, as well as a HX300L excavator.

Out in the field, ARM’s crews use them to load their spreading equipment, while on site they load product onto tractor trailers and dump trailers. Steele said the Hyundais also are used to process materials, which are run through both a blending process and an operation to get them more consistent and particle sized.

Steele trusts the professionals at North Carolina-based MAY-RHI, the veteran heavy equipment dealer to provide him with machines and timely service and support.

He considers two main factors when deciding ARM needs a new machine.

“Price is always a factor, but I don’t strictly just look at that; rather, I focus on value. Power-wise, the Hyundai load-

ers are very strong. Their prices are very good, and the brand has a great extended warranty program. From my dealings, it’s the best [manufacturer] in the industry. And the service we get from MAY-RHI is just incredible. They are very responsive; usually within a day somebody is there to help us on site with any problem that we have.”

Jim Barkley, a regional manager of ARM, echoed Steele’s opinion on the Hyundai HL940 wheel loaders and working with MAY-RHI. “We started using Hyundai a couple years ago and just found it to be a superior loader,” he said. “It handles better, gives you a much smoother ride and smoother hydraulics.

The service and maintenance MAY-RHI provides has proven much better than all the other companies we have dealt with.”

The Hyundai HL940 loaders have reached a legendary status at ARM, Steele explained, so much so that they are known as “The Beast” within the company.

“At a large job down in Georgia, one of our three-wheeled floater spreaders had gotten stuck in a field, so the crew took the second spreader they had to try to pull it out and it got stuck as well,” he said. “Then, they took another brand of loader out and tried to pull the first spreader out and it got stuck, too. We also had two tractor trailers come out in the field and they got stuck on their way in. Our guys went to another field, grabbed the Hyundai loader and brought it over, pulled both the trucks out, plus the other brand of loader and got the spreaders free, too.

“That was the first Hyundai loader I bought, and when my crew down there called to tell me the story, one said ‘Man, this thing is a beast!’ That’s how these loaders gained their nickname.”

Upcoming Rental Report to Take Unique View of Industry

The Association of Equipment Distributors has compiled a report that may just revolutionize the American heavy equipment rental industry as it examines management practices and provides granular benchmarking data for this important industry segment.

Available this fall, AED’s 2020 Cost of Doing Business Report and Annual Rental Report will be packaged with a white paper written by Richard Stewart, an independent consultant who conducted the research and compiled and analyzed the data.

Nitty Gritty Details Stewart, a former CPA and now an independent consultant, adopted an academic methodology for the study, using a doubleblind approach in conjunction with Industry Insights Inc., an independent professional research and consulting firm that specializes in conducting financial surveys, compensation studies, market assessments and other forms of customized research.

“The report is reliable, relevant, and representative,” he stated.

The 12-month research project began

with 10 volunteer equipment distributors — just enough for Stewart to recognize trends in common practices that allowed him to develop a confidential survey to be distributed to other AED members for further investigation. The survey, completed by 91 dealers (20 percent of the membership), collected financial data, information about management practices, business models, strategy, budgeting, planning and operational data at a granular level.

Stewart said this level of detail has never done before in the rental market, but now that it has been collected, it offers an opportunity for distributors to “understand business at a level never seen before” and to make improvements to their business practices.

Machines that are inadequate in size or capacity for an application don’t operate at peak fuel efficiency, and machines that are overkill for the task are wasteful.

Select the gear that provides the desired ground speed at a reduced engine rpm without overloading. White wrote that aside from keeping machines at peak performance-level, thought should be given to the way changes in gear affect fuel consumption.

“By simply reducing engine rpm without overloading at ground speed, fuel efficiency can be increased by 15 to 30 percent at half power and 5 to 15 percent at 75 percent power.”

Use heavy equipment with an advanced telematics system. Telematics will allow you to monitor fuel consumption, operational hours, driving habits, machine idling, maintenance alerts and other factors that affect overall fuel usage and costs, wrote Trekker Group.

“Monitor fuel use closely with the telematics system to identify high and excessive consumption. Check out the state of these machines, how they’re being operated, and whether they’re the right equipment for their applications.”

Your Fuel Provider In the site planning stage, you should determine your fuel

needs for the construction project and the site. Taylor Oil suggests determining whether you’ll need onsite fueling for individual pieces of equipment, or a delivered fuel tank and pumps.

If you go the delivered route, make sure you also have special protection shields that guard against theft and damage.

“Depending on the choice you go with, you can enjoy a more flexible fueling structure,” according to the Taylor Oil blog.

Find a trusted onsite fuel delivery provider. “Not only can you cut down on wasted down time, you can also enjoy 24/7 flexibility from a provider that delivers day or night, or even on weekends,” noted the blog.

“The best part is, the fueling tanks can service more than one truck or piece of machinery at once.”

Sometimes your construction site contains both standard gasoline and off-road diesel, in the case of heavy equipment.

Look for patterns in fuel use on the construction site.

Some fuel providers have sophisticated tank monitoring systems that use automatic tank gauges that notify you when you’re approaching low levels of fuel.

Taylor noted a reputable fuel provider may also offer you daily or weekly reports that track your accounting practices and fuel data management methods.

It’s important to always follow the recommended fuel grade for the equipment and the weather conditions in which the machinery will be working.

Fuel storage also is important to fuel efficiency on the job site. Cashman Equipment stresses the goal here is to mini-

mize evaporation. You can do that by keeping storage tanks well-shaded. “Less evaporation occurs with white or aluminum painted storage tanks versus red,” noted Cashman’s blog.

Do you have a construction refueling plan? Emergencies happen, especially during the winter, points out Taylor Oil. Proper refueling practices help you smoothly handle your fueling needs without stress.

“Failing to have a re-fueling plan for your construction equipment can affect the timely completion of projects.

Partnering with a responsive fuel provider can make all the difference in developing a strategy to put continuity of equipment-based operations at the forefront.”

Taylor suggested finding a reliable service provider who offers a variety of fuel services, including customizable scheduling capabilities, to ensure you get 24/7 support when you need it most.

“Having someone on your side to provide fueling throughout the day, night or weekend will not only cut down on the risk of delays but failures, as well. You benefit from a stronger reputation in the marketplace, translating to additional opportunities for contracts and revenues.”

Your refueling plan should take into account project duration, location, frequency of fill-ups, equipment size, type of project, OSHA regulations, history of fuel consumption, jobsite requirements, onsite or mobile fueling, volume pricing, labor costs and liability.

“Once you have a plan in place, get it in writing and post it. Review often and adjust as needed,” suggested Taylor.  CEG

eff Martin held its East Coast Early Fall Construction & Transportation Public Auction Ring 1 Oct. 1, 2020, in Pelzer, S.C. It featured a wide selection of construction equipment, attachments, accessories and trucks. The bidders came from many southern states and even more registered online to bid.  CEG

“The scrapers are more for the mass hauling,” said Burdine. “Our tractor pans are all equipped with GPS, so you’re able to cut grade with them with little to no support.”

The box culverts — 1,695 ft. to be installed — will be cast-in-place. The reinforced concrete pipe — approximately 17,000 linear ft.

“It is taking approximately six to eight weeks to fully construct each box culvert,” said Burdine. “On a good day we can install approximately 200 linear feet of reinforced concrete pipe per crew. The pipe runs on this project are relatively short, so production is lower than what can normally be expected.

The pipe is being delivered weekly and staged at different locations for easy access once the pipe installation process begins.”

Ninety percent of Phase 1 earth work has been completed, and with the roadbeds laid out, the operations to install the subbase, base and asphalt top began in mid-September.

“The challenge is to get as much asphalt down as we can between now and when the cold winter catches us,” said Burdine, who noted that paving is typically not done between December and March.

The bridges at Chubby Creek are 261.58 ft. long and two lanes in each direction, and the two at Chubby Creek Relief are 542.25 ft. long with two lanes in each direction.

“We began pile driving on Chubby Creek Relief in August,” said Burdine, who pointed out that pile driving and installation of the substructure for the Chubby Creek bridges has been completed. “The challenge on that was getting access to the site — it was a very nasty area with steep terrain and wet ground conditions. The goal is to complete the bridges at Chubby Creek in late November and Chubby Creek Relief before April 2021.”

The operation to drive the steel piles, which went down 70 ft., began on June 12 and when completed on July 2 the substructure crews moved in to do cast-in-place concrete pours and install prefabricated concrete girders, some of which weigh 80,000 lbs. and are 100 ft. long.

“The beams are being lifted with two Kobelco CK 1100G cranes working in tandem,” said Burdine. “We have the equipment and manpower to set multiple spans — six beams/spans in a single day.”

The Chubby Creek Relief bridges are being constructed via similar process.

The management staff includes Burdine, Jonathan Hust, Landon Hood, Drew Burns and Dustin Norman. The field supervision is led by Tony Edwards, Chip Hussey, Tim

Knight and Josh Lambert.

“The team dynamic is very good,” said Burdine. “When we were awarded the project, we had a plan of attack and we’ve worked it as best as we’re able to. As far as the work ethic of the crews and how the project is going, we wouldn’t be close to where we are now without the guys out here.”

Peak days have up to 100 Eutaw and subcontractor workers onsite. The major subcontractors are ILM Inc. for erosion control and grassing; Hall’s Construction Company for minor structure concrete and concrete paved ditch; APAC-Mississippi Inc. for asphalt paving; Kimes and Stone Construction Co. Inc for soil stabilization; and American Field Services Inc. for concrete flatwork.

The excavation will generate 4.4 million cu. yds. of earth and nearly 300 acres of trees will be harvested. New materials to be brought in should include 151,000 tons of asphalt; 12,000 cu. yds. of concrete; 800 tons of rebar; 17,000 linear feet of various pipes; and 75,000 tons of riprap; and 250,000 tons of granular material.

Eutaw uses a lot of Komatsu equipment.

Additional equipment includes: Komatsu WA320 loaders; Cat 140M motor graders; and compactors — a HAMM H11IX and a Cat 815F. “With the material we are excavating, cutting edges are one of the main wear items that we have encountered,” said Burdine, who noted that Eutaw has on-site mechanics. “We also encounter blown hydraulic lines and routine repairs, but our people can replace blown hydraulic lines and get equipment back up and going in a couple of hours normally. We have a lot of new equipment on this project, and there are not many major equipment issues per se.”

Eutaw purchases and rents equipment from Lyle Machinery Co. in Jackson, Miss.; Thompson Cat in Tupelo, Miss.; Power Equipment Co. in Saltillo, Miss.; Scott Equipment in Memphis, Tenn.; Cowan Equipment in Huntsville, Ala.; and Mississippi AG in Canton, Miss.

“They are doing a phenomenal job, not only with service and parts, but also with intelligent machines,” said Burdine. “They are hands on and always keeping us up-todate with all the new technology coming out on equipment. We have good relationships with the dealerships, and basically what we look for is good service and dependability.”

The progress thus far backs an ethos that Burdine takes to heart — “Start the job strong and don’t let up. Once you start it, you have to follow through with it, making sure everything is done correctly along the way.”  CEG
