FDOTTacklesRepairstoBridgesDamagedByHurricaneIan

Shortly before Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that emergency road and bridge repairs to Pine Island had been finished ahead of schedule on Oct. 5, cheers and laughter greeted some of the first motorists to cross a temporary bridge built to restore a link from the mainland to the island, hammered Sept. 28 by Hurricane Ian.

The island lies just to the west of Fort Myers in Lee County, one of hardest hit areas by the hurricane, and east of Cayo Costa, where Ian first made landfall as a Category 4 storm. Ian’s powerful storm surge and relentless winds washed out roads and bridges, isolating residents who rode out the storm on the 18-mile, mangrovewrapped Pine Island.

Before Ian, the island was home to fishing villages, snowbirds from the northern states and long-term residents, who now face the long road to recovery.

FDOT Quickly Erects Temporary Bridge to Island

At a press briefing Oct. 2 in Arcadia, Fla., DeSantis said that he had directed the FDOT to build a temporary bridge from Matlacha to Pine Island to make the area accessible by vehicle. Since the bridge was down, many residents have hailed boats to get them to the island.

Work on the bridge that connects Matlacha to Pine Island began Oct. 3, and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) crews finished the repairs in less than 36 hours, DeSantis and FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue said in an FDOT statement from Tallahassee.

“Within 24 hours after I asked FDOT to get involved, we had more than 130 trucks rolling in and crews got to work,” DeSantis said in the statement. “We made it a priority and we didn’t just get it done — we got it done quick. I want to thank the dedicated FDOT crews for working around the clock to restore the community’s access to Pine Island.”

Despite its completion, the bridge to Pine Island has not yet opened to the public, according to the Miami Herald; instead, priority access will be given to emergency vehicles and first responders, noted Michael Williams, FDOT deputy communications director, in an email to the news outlet. He did not say when the bridge would be open to the 9,000 residents who live on the island, many of whom fled before Ian and have been anxiously waiting to return to see how their homes fared.

Among the first to pass over the water on wheels, as seen in a video posted Oct. 4 by Brandon Lynaugh on a closed Pine Island Facebook page: A police car and a Publix truck carrying supplies to help a community largely cut off from civilization.

“What an extraordinarily beautiful sight to see. Rejoice!” posted Christian Conner after viewing the video on the Facebook site.

“Hundreds of loads of sand and rock, various pieces of heavy equipment, and dedicated crew members have literally helped pave the way to recovery for this community,” Perdue explained in the statement. “The [FDOT] was honored to be called to help support Florida’s communities in their greatest time of need. We are proud to have worked alongside our partners, Lee County, and deliver on our promise of reconnecting this community to the mainland as quickly as we possibly could.”

Before convoys of emergency crews, police and grocery deliveries could gain access, some frightened residents also took to social media to plead for aid.

“We do not have any help in St. James City, there are so many people here that have completely lost everything like elsewhere,” Denise Martinez posted the weekend after the storm on a Pine Island Facebook group.

“As of this morning, nobody has brought in supplies besides the people trying to get to the island themselves to check on loved ones or if they still have a home. All the people on the island need food, water, gas, propane, they do not even have a roll of toilet paper.

Something needs to be done today or more people will die. It is a complete war zone down here.”

According to the governor’s office and

FDOT, permanent repairs to the Pine Island bridge will be made after immediate recovery efforts subside.

“While the permanent replacement is expected to take some time to complete, the work completed this week provides safe and immediate access,” the statement said.

Sanibel Island Causeway Rebuild Now Underway

Additionally, DeSantis announced Oct. 4 that a contract to begin immediate repairs to the nearby Sanibel Causeway, five sections of which were washed away by Ian, has also been awarded. He did not release the name of the contractor in charge of the project, however.

The Herald reported that equipment has been mobilized on the mainland earlier and a team is on the ground to start the repair process. The reconstruction to the Sanibel Causeway is projected to be completed by the end of October, DeSantis’s office said.

The three-mile-long causeway sustained major damage during Hurricane Ian as the storm barreled across coastal areas of Southwest, and made the only link between Sanibel, Captiva Island, and the mainland impassable.

Multiple sections of the bridge, carrying Florida Highway 867 across San Carlos Bay, collapsed into the water, leaving anyone who did not evacuate stranded, according to MSNBC.

“We are counting five major breaches,” U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds told the news station in the hours after the storm’s passing.

One of those causeway breaches measured approximately 50- to 65-ft.-wide, according to NBC affiliate WBBH-TV in Fort Myers.

The multiple cuts in the bridge will keep Sanibel’s roughly 6,700 residents from direct access to Sanibel via cars and trucks until the causeway is repaired. In addition, the fixes ordered by DeSantis are much needed for first responders as Hurricane Ian recovery efforts such as power restoration and debris removal continue.

“Access to our barrier islands is a priority for our first responders and emergency services who have been working day and night to bring relief to all Floridians affected by Hurricane Ian,” the governor noted in one of several statements he has released since the storm.

WTVT reported that all accessible stateowned bridge inspections have been completed, and the governor’s office said FDOT is helping with inspections on locally owned bridges in the area.

Once immediate recovery efforts have subsided, DeSantis said permanent longterm repairs will be made to the Sanibel Causeway. The emergency repairs currently being performed will allow the bridge to be safely passable for immediate access and be incorporated into long-term repair plans.

ABCReportsIndustry Employment Up By 13,000 in September

The construction industry added 19,000 jobs on net in September, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

On a year-over-year basis, industry employment has risen by 292,000 jobs, or 3.9 percent.

Nonresidential construction employment increased by 13,100 positions on net, with growth in two of the three sub categories. Nonresidential specialty trade added 11,200 net new jobs, while nonresidential building added an additional 2,400. The number of heavy and civil engineering jobs decreased by 500 positions.

Theconstructionunemploymentratedecreasedto3.4per cent in September. Unemployment across all industries fell from 3.7 percent inAugust to 3.5 percent in September.

“Today’s employment report was terrific, which in this upside-down, inside-out economic environment means that it was truly terrible,” said ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu. “Stock, bond and other investors are hunting for signs of slowing economic activity, particularly with respect to the labor market. Those signs did not emerge today. Despite ele vated compensation costs, employers continue to hire aggressively. Not only does that help support additional inflationary pressure, but it also sends a signal to Federal Reserve policymakers that further aggressive rate tightening is necessary. If rates rise too dramatically, and they have already expanded substantially, the recovery in nonresiden tial activity would likely buckle.

“Despiterisingborrowingcostsandelevatedriskofreces sion, most contractors remain upbeat regarding near-term prospects, according to ABC’s Construction Confidence Index,” said Basu. “Backlog remains stable, and many con tractors expect rising sales, employment and profit margins over the next six months. Many contractors also continue to report operating at capacity. Their primary issue is not insuf ficient demand for construction services, but rather a lack of access to skilled craft professionals.”

James River Branch Helps SW Va. Farmers, Contractors

James River Equipment, a John Deere agricultural and construction and machinery dealer in the Mid-South, earlier this year moved its Rocky Mount, Va., branch further north to a larger facility in Boones Mill, just south of Roanoke.

The Rocky Mount store had been in operation since 2017 at what had previously been a long-standing John Deere dealership 15 minutes south of the current branch along U.S. Highway 220.

Eric Finch, the store’s general manager, said that James River’s relocation to Boones Mill was done to better serve local farmers with operations both large and small.

In addition, the branch helps its construction customers that work to develop Franklin County, including at nearby Smith Mountain Lake, southern Virginia’s top destination for folks wanting to build lakefront homes. The change of address puts the James River dealership closer to the turnoff from U.S. 220 onto Wirtz Road, which leads to the lake. In addition, Boones Mill is 15 minutes nearer to Roanoke.

“The traffic out here on U.S. 220 is substantially higher than it was in Rocky Mount,” he said. “As a result, we have seen a significant increase in business since the move, and the new building has attracted people as well.”

Branch Serves Both Farmers, Contractors

Finch noted that, above all, James River’s Boones Mill store is a full-service agricultural branch that both sells John Deere-made tractors and keeps them running with its parts and service departments.

“We handle everything from lawn mowers and other lawn and garden products to compact tractors, full-size utility tractors, big agricultural tractors and all John Deere’s large harvesting equipment, like planters and sprayers,” he said. “We have a few customers who run large agricultural operations, but it is mostly customers with beef cattle farms that we sell our tractors to.”

Working together to solve a problem and fix a part are Jamie Smith (L) and Steve Garber, both service technicians at the Boones Mill, Va., location.

Helping James River’s efforts, too, is the shoreline of Smith Mountain Lake, which has seen a steady rise in homebuilding over the past 35 years, with an emphasis on upscale houses, condominiums and golf communities. That means builders and lawncare professionals stay busy at the reservoir, and, by extension, a dynamic company like James River can thrive.

With the goal of supporting the company’s nearby Salem location, which Finch described as James River’s construction hub for southwest Virginia, he said Boones Mill serves “many contractors that use compact construction equipment, as well as a lot of landscape companies, and many independent contractors that have one or two machines. We have a unique opportunity to support our construction customers in the region through our agricultural and lawn and garden footprint.”

Although his branch does not stock parts for large construction equipment, Finch added, it can obtain parts from

Bob Gearhart, parts manager, Boones Mill, Va., gathers the needed items to fulfill a parts order.

Salem, the one branch in the area dedicated solely to heavy construction equipment, or order directly from John Deere and have it in the Boones Mill branch just as quickly.

Normally, though, Finch’s store shelves parts that most contractors — no matter their size — can stop in and pick up, along with light service, if needed.

“We do not plan to sell a ton of heavy excavators and bulldozers from here, but if we can help keep customers up and running down here without them having to drive more than an hour to Salem, that will really help us grow,” Finch said. “We carry a full stock of parts for all compact construction pieces.”

He added that the Salem store, and James River’s three other nearby turf and agricultural locations — Boone’s Mill, Amherst and Buchanan, each of which are within a 50-mi. radius of Salem — have banded together “to tighten up” their construction efforts between Roanoke and Lynchburg.

Other James River dealerships in the area can be found in Martinsville, an agricultural specialist south of Rocky Mount; and in Richlands, a construction branch located farther west in the state’s coal region.

In total, James River Equipment has 24 locations in Virginia, with most focused on either agricultural/turf products or construction/forestry machinery. Some of its stores in Virginia, though, are designed to handle equipment for all these industries.

In addition, the company runs another 20 stores in North Carolina, and one each in South Carolina and West Virginia.

Product Offerings Expand at James River

Buddy McGlothlin, vice president and general manager of James River’s Salem dealership, is excited that the Boones Mill branch is perfectly capable of providing a large contractor with what he or she needs, either through its service or parts departments or, in short order, those of the Salem branch.

“We offer full-service facilities with well-trained mechanics, and we have everything they would need on our shelves,” said McGlothlin, who also manages the Richlands branch. “People coming in our branches will find we have a wide array of products for various industries, from the quarry and mining business to the residential contractor. Plus, we are getting very specialized with our ability to serve the drilling and the materials-handling industries.”

Greensboro Tree Experts Reach New Heights With Magni

Robert Rogg enjoys his job working with trees, whether he is trying to help make them grow or clearing them away due to storm damage. Every job is different, though the degree of difficulty varies widely from project to project.

“I love the challenge that they often present, like picking up and disposing of trees after a huge storm has moved through the area, and all that entails,” Rogg said recently at a job in one of Greensboro, N.C.’s many leafy neighborhoods. “Taking trees off houses is definitely a challenge each time. It requires a skill in thinking through the process beforehand and how to do it without causing any more damage to the house.”

An expert tree professional and trained arborist, Rogg has owned Tree Experts in Greensboro for 30 years. His is a small operation, with just himself and two other people, including, on occasion, his teenaged son. But he also employs 10 of the best machines in the tree-handling business, along with four trucks.

Among them are Vermeer BC1800 chippers, Banditmade chippers, Ditch Witch mini-skid steers, ASV skid steers, Terex bucket trucks and UPequip’s Easy Lift spider lifts.

Magni Makes Rogg’s Work Easier

His latest acquisition, though, is quickly proving to be the one that will literally drive Tree Experts to new heights.

“Our most recent addition to the Tree Experts fleet is a Magni RTH 6.30 telescopic handler,” Rogg said. “We bought it from Pinnacle Cranes in Midlands, N.C., because after having done this work for a long time, I am trying to make the job as easy as possible on our bodies.

Jesus Cedillo Joins Linder Industrial

Jesus Cedillo recently joined the staff of Linder Industrial Machinery as the company’s used equipment general manag er.

Cedillo has been in the machine industry since 1995 when he started in the crane industry. Over the years, he became adept in knowledge of a wide range of equipment — includ ing earthmoving and paving — which led him to additional opportunities, but when he first got into the crane business, he had no idea his responsibilities also would include sales of barges, boats, tugboats and push boats.

“The crane industry provided me with the unique opportu nity to travel the world and work with customers on their machine buying needs and providing them with a complete packageofparts-service-sales-rentalssolutions,”Cedillosaid.

Before joining Linder, Cedillo held the position of vice president of international sales of a major equipment distribu torship in the state of Florida. With his previous company, he was able to export anything new and used on any product type.

Travel for business became second nature to Cedillo and it provided exposure to broader types of machines to sell.

“You need to understand the worldwide machine market to beabletounderstandaneedandtobeabletocloseadealwith a customer who is maybe 7,000 miles away,” added Cedillo.

In simple terms, what Cedillo will be doing at Linder is to “provide a package solution.”

“I am honored to be a part of this team. I will be working to surpass our goals for the used equipment division.”

When asked about surpassing goals, Cedillo said that the plan is to take the sales of used equipment buying and selling

to another level. A simple philosophy of “doing more that works and less that doesn’t.”

“Weneedtohavegreaterdigitalizationtosupportthegroup hereandbringawayofdoingbusinessforthemthatsurpasses old methods of simply calling and touching base by utilizing an interactive digitalized approach. A platform that is ‘live’ that can be an enhanced tool that will help our people to sell what we have.”

Withregardstowhat“digitally”completelymeans,Cedillo said it’s a tool for enhancement of the buying process and to be the hub to close the deals.

“By having a sales platform that Linder reps can open on their computers, tablets or phones and provide a buying expe rience, like a virtual tour of a machine, without actually hav ing to touch the machine. Nothing overly revolutionary, just usingthetoolsthatwecanfurtherdevelopandsimplydiscard any practices that may be obsolete.

“Wehavegoalsandtargetsascompany, butforusedequip ment, we have a plan to make it a much bigger opportunity than what is currently in place.”

When asked about sourcing and finding machines to sell, Cedillo said, “I’m not a magician. We struggle like everyone else to find the machines our customers need. But I can already see that management at Linder is supporting me with theflexibilitytomakedealsthatwouldn’ttypicallybedonein the past. The market is difficult right now. We need to be resourceful and use creative outlets for getting machines to sell.”

YanmarIntroducesAGVSolution to Ga. Manufacturing Facility

Yanmar America Corporation has intro duced an advanced automated guided vehi cle (AGV) solution to its Adairsville, Ga., manufacturing facility.

The addition of the modularAGV system toYanmar’sPowerpackseriesgeneratorpro duction line has boosted production capacity ten-fold and increased the quality of prod ucts delivered to customers, according to the manufacturer.

“We brought Powerpack assembly inhousetoourAdairsvillefacilityasawayto offer more solutions and maintain high lev els of product quality reaching the end user,” said Zach Morgan, a production engineer at YanmarAmerica. “Demand began to quick ly increase, far outstripping the ability of the small cell that was originally constructed to support the effort.”

At this point, the team got together and came up with several potential solutions including conveyor systems, assorted carts, overhead cranes, and the current implemen tation — automated guided vehicles. The AGV solution was selected as being highly

capable, scalable, flexible and cost competi tive. Also, the lead time, at two to four months, was significantly less than the con veyor implementation timeline of more than six months.

The system does not require in-depth pro gramming knowledge or an automation engineer for implementation and can even be controlled through an app from the Google Play store.

Looking forward, Yanmar America’s AGV solution has the flexibility to grow with its business. The engineering team can easily change the path, extend, shrink, change shape or add additional stops or sta tions to accommodate demand and meet market requirements.

“As we continue to grow not only in Powerpack, but also in the rural lifestyle and other businesses, we’re taking a step back and reexamining our manufacturing approach,” said Scott Shorrock, director of operations at Yanmar America. “Yanmar is all about embracing change and taking on new challenges.”

FloridaCommunityBuilttoEndureHurricanesEscapesIan

Like many others in southwest Florida, Mark Wilkerson seemingly gambled his life by choosing to shelter at home rather than evacuate when Hurricane Ian crashed ashore Sept. 28 as a Category 4 storm.

But it was not just luck that saved Wilkerson and his wife, Rhonda, or prevented damage to their well-appointed onestory house.

You might say that it was all by design.

In 2018, the Wilkersons became some of the first 100 residents of Babcock Ranch — an innovative community north of Fort Myers —where homes are built to withstand the worst that Mother Nature can throw at them without being flooded out or losing electricity, water or the internet.

In a report Oct. 6, National Public Radio (NPR) noted, to begin with, the community is located 30 mi. inland to avoid coastal storm surges. Power lines to homes are all run underground, where they are shielded from high winds. Giant retaining ponds surround the development to protect houses from flooding, and, as a backup, the development’s streets are designed to absorb floodwaters and spare the houses.

Babcock Ranch’s Concept Appealed to Couple

“We’d almost been ready to build north of Tampa, on the Gulf [of Mexico],” explained Wilkerson, who moved with his wife to the Sunshine State from Illinois. “And then the last hurricane came through and reminded me that I want to be in a place where I don’t have to evacuate.”

So, when the storm hit, the Wilkersons stayed put, as did most other residents here, according to NPR. Although the community did not experience the hurricane at its most intense, Mark Wilkerson said they felt its 100-mph winds.

At one point, he noted, the lights in his house flickered but “lo and behold, we never lost power.” In fact, his house did not lose one roof shingle.

And that is the basic story of Babcock Ranch, post-Ian: Aside from a traffic light at the development’s main entrance

that is no longer there, a few street signs lying on the ground, and some knocked-over palm trees, you would hardly know that a hurricane came through.

Unfortunately, that is not the case for people living in surrounding communities, where damaged structures and power outages have been commonplace.

Wilkerson, though, has worked in the solar industry since the 1980s, and one of the things that drew him to Babcock Ranch is its innovative use of solar energy. A total of 870 acres of land owned by the development sports 650,000 photovoltaic panels, operated by Florida Power & Light.

The solar array powers the entire community — and then some — as it can supply 30,000 homes. With Babcock Ranch having only about 5,000 residents, though, the excess goes back into the grid and is used to power surrounding communities. At night and on cloudy days, a natural gas generator kicks in to fill the gap.

Developers Aimed for Strong, Sustainable Community

Babcock Ranch is the brainchild of Syd Kitson, a former professional football player who made his name in the 1980s playing for the NFL’s Green Bay Packers. He went on to found a real estate development company, Kitson & Partners, and Babcock Ranch is one of the firm’s showcase projects.

Jennifer Languell is a sustainability engineer who helped design Babcock Ranch, and she lives in the community as well.

“We felt you could develop and improve land, not just develop in a traditional way where people think you are destroying the land,” she told NPR. “We have a lot of open spaces. We have a lot of trails. We have a lot of parks.

“The things that we do, you don’t see,” Languell added. “The strength of the buildings, or the infrastructure that deals with stormwater, or the utilities. You don’t see that stuff,

which is good, because most people don’t need or want to think about it.”

As confident as Languell is of the community’s durability, even she was a little unnerved by Hurricane Ian’s sheer strength.

“I can definitely tell you that I pulled up my construction drawings and I verified the wind speed,” she acknowledged.

Community’s GoodFortune Paid Forward

Admittedly, Babcock Ranch has a slightly insular feel to it. But partly because residents were spared the full wrath of the hurricane, they have been able to reach out and help neighbors that experienced much more damage from the storm.

A community center at Babcock Ranch was designed to double as a reinforced storm shelter. Everyone staying there right now has come in from other hard-hit communities, according to NPR. The community’s residents also have been fielding requests for help on social media and shuttling in supplies.

Judith Schrag arrived at the Babcock Ranch shelter after her Port Charlotte apartment was flooded out.

The community has been “absolutely phenomenal in terms of donations,” she said. “They are what have helped to keep this place going.”

Hurricane Ian was a big test for this community, where houses start at around $250,000. Languell said the storm provided “proof of concept” for the community’s design, and, she added, its developers’ welcome imitators, noting that communities elsewhere in the United States might benefit from what has been learned at Babcock Ranch.

But there is still more to learn, Languell explained.

“We don’t want to brag by any stretch of the imagination, because you do that, and the next thing you know, you get hit by a Category 5 and something doesn’t work as well.”

Ring Power Utility Equipment Partners WithAware Innovations

In an effort to provide its customers with new and innovative solutions, Ring Power Utility Equipment has partnered with Aware Innovations to offer a groundbreaking product known as ItemAware.

ItemAware is a unique tool and asset tracking system that uses RFID and other technologies to tag tools or other items and pair them with a beacon location (truck, shed, job site, etc.). The ItemAware app is then used to see each item’s location and last-seen status in real time, while clicking on individual items gives the user a detailed history of the item including locations, manufacturer and more.

Tool loss in the utility industry is estimated at 30 percent annually, a value of approximately $900,000,000. ItemAware can help reduce that asset bleed by giving fleet managers more control and visibility of assets in real time, according to the manufacturer.

In addition, the detail levels of each item

seen on the ItemAware app can aid in keeping safety-related gear current with inspections, an important aspect of compliance in the utility industry.

Ring Power Utility Equipment began a pilot program last year with South Florida utility contractor Concurrent Group. Since adopting the ItemAware technology,

Concurrent has seen a marked decrease in lost tool assets.

“As they move around from truck to truck, we’re able to hold those accountable that had borrowed a tool, but also reduce the amount of tools that we’re replacing,” said Steve Sarno, VP Power Delivery and Principle at Concurrent Group, “This was the first system that worked.”

With the success of the pilot program at Concurrent, Ring Power Utility Equipment and Aware Innovations have begun pilot program discussions with two other major utility contractors in the state of Florida. Ring Power Utility Equipment is a dealer of Terex Utilities along with other premier manufacturers of utility

equipment such as Patriot Equipment, Spiradrill, Vac-Con, Brooks Brothers, Palfinger, Skylift, Prinoth, Manitex and National Crane. Ring Power also offers full parts and service on all makes and models of utility equipment, as well as a full range of utility industry tools from brands such as Klein, Makita, Chance, Burndy, Bashlin, Greenlee and more.

Aware Innovations is an IT Solutions company that specializes in automatic identification and data capture technologies. With ItemAware, it gives users the power and visibility to make intelligent decisions by providing improved process, supply chain and asset visibility through innovative and modern solutions. This enables automated data collection, analysis, and notification; giving the flexibility and knowledge required to make informed business decisions.

Ring Power Utility Equipment’s mission statement is “To provide innovative solutions at the highest standard through honest and professional relationships.”

Cat to Host World’s Best Operators at Regional Semi-Finals

This week marks the beginning of the Global Operator Challenge regional semifinal events.

Caterpillar has invited 84 of the best equipment operators in the world to compete to become one of only nine global finalists moving on to round three competition held during ConExpo-Con/AGG next March in Las Vegas. The challenge tests the skills and precision of equipment operators as they prove their excellence in operating Cat equipment and technology, along with their ability to master any piece of construction machinery safely and efficiently.

“More than 10,000 operators around the world registered to compete in the Global Operator Challenge this year,” said Jessica Nunley, global marketing manager of Caterpillar. “After dealer qualification, 3,500 machine operators competed in the first round, and 84 of those have advanced to compete in one of our regional semifinal events held this month in Spain, the United States, Japan and Brazil.”

“These operators come from many different industries, and each have their preferred piece of equipment to operate, but they have one thing in common. They are leaders in their field and can apply their operating skills to a range of equipment,” said Matt Smith, global marketing manager of Caterpillar. “The dealers did a great job turning out the best operators, and now Caterpillar will put them to the test at our demonstration centers around the world.”

Dig Into Competition

During each portion of the Global Operator Challenge, participants execute a variety of tasks, such as digging a trench,

loading a precise amount of dirt, and hauling or maneuvering the equipment through a variety of obstacles. Scoring is based on the operator’s skills, efficiency, as well as his or her competence in using integrated technology to enhance the machine’s performance.

“Because this is a global competition, we want to make certain that spectators all over the world can follow along with the action,” Nunley said. “We will be posting live competition updates and sharing the operator’s machine expertise on our regional social media pages during every challenge.”

Spectators can follow all the action during the competitions using these regional social media pages.

Three finalists from Europe will move on to the global final.

Two finalists — one each from the East and West — will advance to the global final.

One finalist from South America will move on to the global final as the third representative from the Americas.

Three finalists from Asia will move on to the global final.

Nine finalists will emerge from these regional semifinals and participate in the global finals competition in Caterpillar’s outdoor Festival Grounds exhibit F4455 during ConExpo-Con/AGG in Las Vegas, March 2023. The winner of the competition will receive an all-expense-paid trip for two to one Caterpillar location worldwide.

Future Is Now: Examining Industry’s PowerAlternatives

At the center of any construction alternative power discussion is diesel. Diesel remains the go-to power on job sites — according to the Diesel Technology Forum, 98 percent of construction’s energy use in the United States comes from diesel.

But with global initiatives under way to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050, it’s up to construction industry manufacturers to find ways to lessen diesel’s carbon impact. A range of solutions is being considered:

• Replacing the diesel engine altogether

• Reconfiguring the engine to run on lower-carbon fuels

• Making the diesel engine as efficient as possible

All will be necessary.

The challenges numerous. Unlike some sectors, construction doesn’t rely on a core piece of equipment, but rather on a vast fleet that ranges from mini excavators to massive off-highway trucks. And a job site can be anywhere from midtown Manhattan to rural Wyoming. This is why so many diesel alternatives are being offered, including electric, hydrogen, biodiesel and other biofuels.

Over the next decade or so, one (or more) of these alternatives will establish themselves as having the greatest long-term potential.

“What’s coming? The answer is probably all of them,” said Jeremy Harsin, construction market director atAEM member company Cummins. “The combination of duty cycle and available infrastructure is going to decide what wins out, but they’re probably all going to have their place in the world.”

Electric Has Arrived

Zero emissions, low noise, instant response, fewer components to break down, all on a platform that delivers the same breakout force of a diesel-powered unit — electric power sounds like a major win. That’s why much of the alternative power activity in construction has centered on electric, particularly in the compact equipment segment.

they get into rural areas. Since many job sites aren’t even on the grid, many OEMs are selling chargers with their electric machines. Solar charging also is being examined.

And electric’s strong sustainability argument can break down when one gets to the batteries themselves. First, several minerals are extracted to create the batteries, including copper, lithium and nickel.

Second, proper end-of-life battery disposal is still in question, not to mention that battery materials have residual value. Cat, for one, said it is looking at repurposing batteries from high-power applications for a lower-power second life.

and hydrogen-fueled engines are — at least at this point — in the prototype stage.

Low-Carbon Fuels Can Be Used in Same Basic Engine

Hydrogen-powered engines also illustrate another way to reduce engine emissions: modify a conventional engine to be able to burn cleaner fuels. According to proponents, this approach doesn’t require wholesale changes of jobsite practices, machine componentry or fueling infrastructure.

This approach offers scale, since the many of the compo-

Infrastructure challenges also are part of the hydrogen story. The number of hydrogen fueling stations is a hard-to-see sliver looking at this chart from the U.S. Department of Energy. Almost all of them — approximately 70 — are in California.

“Battery power density is increasing all the time and we’re seeing a number of different technologies that make better use of battery energy,” said Ray Gallant, vice president of product management and productivity at AEM member company Volvo Construction Equipment.

“Electric is happening now as machines are starting to be commercially available,” said Chris Sleight, managing director at AEM member Off-Highway Research. Although now quite expensive compared to their diesel counterparts, “at some point the economic argument will be there,” Sleight added.

Electric options are certainly growing. Volvo, for example, started selling its electric compact excavators and wheel loaders into North America this year and recently expanded its offering to five machines.

Electric also has made its way to mid-size and larger construction equipment. Electric machines, however, have some significant downsides. The ones most critical to contractors are limited run-time-per-charge and recharging time. Although the electric charging infrastructure is the most developed of all alternative powers in the United States, today’s electric car owners still have range anxiety when

Electric machines also will require a reworking of the dealer parts and service offering and technician training. In addition, residual value is central to any equipment cost equation; the verdict is still uncertain whether the value of electric — or indeed any alternative-powered machine — will hold up in the resale market.

Impending Rise of Hydrogen

Current construction equipment prototypes use hydrogen in two ways: either as a fuel cell that charges a battery-electric machine or to fuel an internal combustion engine. In a hydrogen fuel cell, hydrogen and oxygen react to produce electricity, with water as its only by-product. In the second way, hydrogen is used as a direct engine fuel, much like diesel.

While hydrogen must be compressed and transported at low temperatures, “it’s a portable fuel so you can get it to where it’s needed,” Sleight said.

But infrastructure challenges also are part of the hydrogen story. The number of hydrogen fueling stations is a hard-tosee sliver looking at this chart from the U.S. Department of Energy. Almost all of them — approximately 70 — are in California.

Construction equipment powered by hydrogen fuel cells

nents are similar. And it holds promise for off-highway engines since Cummins commonly adopts cross platform technologies, Harsin said.

Don’t Overlook Diesel?

Current prices and world political stability issues aside, diesel remains the construction stalwart.

Despite its “dirty diesel” perception, Cummins said it’s worth a reminder that compared with Tier I engines, today’s Tier IV Final engines offer a 96 percent reduction of oxides of nitrogen and a 97 percent reduction in particulate matter.

The United States also is likely to see Tier V emissions regulations by the end of the decade, Harsin said. California has already discussed enacting a Tier V regulation in 2024 with implementation to start in 2028.

Another consideration is the gradual retirement of construction’s aging fleet. Construction machines have a relatively long life; there are plenty of Tier III engine-powered machines still plugging away on job sites. Cat, for example, estimated the average age of its field population to be 11.3 years.

“There’s a lot of good work being done in the diesel space. It’s about lowering our emissions overall. Everything doesn’t have to be zero emission,” said Gallant.

Pettibone Cary-Lift 204i Forklift Can Equip Scrap Baler

The Pettibone Cary-Lift 204i rough terrain forklift can be equipped with a scrap baler attachment for handling debris and materials in demolition and recycling applications.

The machine is purpose-built to deliver numerous safety and performance benefits, according to the manufacturer.

The Cary-Lift 204i features an overhead lift arm design, giving the operator full front visibility when lifting or transporting loads — a sharp contrast to the lift arms on wheel loaders, which are located directly in front of the vehicle. Additionally, Cary-Lift forks are capable of tilting down 90 degrees for specialized lifting tasks.

The 204i is powered by a 200-hp Cummins QSB6.7 Tier IV diesel engine with DOC and SCR aftertreatment. The unit includes an engine-driven fan, cooling package and engine block heater as standard equipment.

The machine provides a maximum load capacity of

20,000 lbs. and max lift height of 16 ft. Offering 4-wheel drive with 2-wheel, 4-wheel and crab hydraulic power steering modes — and with the wheelbase limited to just 12 ft. — the 204i can achieve a turning radius of 21 ft. 6 in.

Unlike forward-reaching articulated loaders, the CaryLift’s heavy-duty, solid steel frame design allows it to take full loads into sharp turns without sacrificing load capacity or stability, according to the manufacturer.

Hydraulic frame sway control and side shift capabilities further stabilize loads by leveling the lifting frame when driving on uneven ground. The sway cylinder moves

7 degrees both right and left of center. Dual joysticks provide intuitive controls to efficiently shift gears and control the hydraulics.

An optional feature for the Cary-Lift 204i is X-Command, a new Pettibone telematics program that offers real-time access to machine data, thereby saving time, money and hassle for equipment owners and maintenance technicians.

Versatile Skid-SteerAttachment Helps Okla. Parks Dept.

From towering sand dunes and refreshing lakes to forested retreats and cool caverns, Oklahoma’s state parks are ready to whisk adventurers away on great outdoor experiences.

Whether lacing up a pair of hiking boots or looking for some relaxing fun in the sun, the scenic beauty of these varied ecoregions and impressive natural resources is sure to provide breathtaking moments. But how exactly do these environments remain so picturesque?

Enter Josh Baker, a forestry technician with one of the Oklahoma State Parks Department’s regional construction crews. Baker and his colleagues utilize two of Diamond Mowers’SK Disc Mulcher Pro X attachments on their compact track loaders (CTLs) to not only shred Cedar, Cottonwood, Oak and Salt Cedar trees common in their service areas, but also clear roadways, campsites, hiking trails, fence lines, mower pathways and more.

“Our experience with these disc mulchers has been exceptional,” said Baker. “They have impressed us with their ability to maintain and elevate the look of our state parks and are well-constructed to take the abuse that forestry work puts our equipment through.”

Before purchasing their Diamond Mowers disc mulchers, Baker and his team were limited to cutting everything they encountered by hand. Then they realize Diamond attachments were ideal for use in rural environments — the versatile 60 in. attachments can cut through trees as large as 14 in. in diameter and continuously mulch material up to 6 in. in diameter.

Four-point hardened steel teeth inside the deck shell act like axe blades to slice though broken branches and trees, while their aggressive design effectively grabs and pulls in material for processing.

“The mulchers are quite easy to use and have become a huge asset to our fleet,”

The Oklahoma State Parks Department’s regional construction crews utilize two of Diamond Mowers’ SK Disc Mulcher Pro X attachments on their compact track loaders (CTLs) to not only shred Cedar, Cottonwood, Oak and Salt Cedar trees common in their service areas, but also clear roadways, campsites, hiking trails, fence lines, mower pathways and more.

added Baker. “They attach to our CTLs quickly and easily, and after watching a few tutorial videos on proper operating techniques, they were a breeze to get the hang of.”

Baker noted that the difference between what the mulchers do compared to cutting everything by hand is “unmatched.” Between land clearing, site preparation, forestry management and even storm and disaster cleanup, the Disc Mulcher Pro X’s versatility has proven to be a key ally for tackling a variety of applications.

The SK Disc Mulcher Pro X is available in two sizes: a 48 in. unit optimal for smaller skid-steers operating in compact spaces, and a 60 in. unit ideal for tackling projects in open, rural areas where there’s a need to clear large areas quickly. It is available with three motor options and is compatible with both standard and high-flow hydraulic machines.

When asked about the value and cost of the disc mulchers, Baker reiterated how important they’ve been to him and his team.

“The design of the attachments and their ease of operation has allowed us to increase efficiency like never before. If I were in the market for a mulcher, I’d purchase this one and be extremely happy,” said Baker.

Diamond Mowers offers a wide range of specialized cutting attachments compatible with most tractor, skid-steer, wheel loader, and excavator brands.

“It has been an amazing piece of machinery, I must say,” he added. “There is a learning curve to it, just like with anything else, but we are figuring out just how well it works each time we take it out.”

Rogg noted that from his research before buying, the 6-ton Magni telehandler came equipped with a remote control that can maneuver the crane to a higher lifting capacity per ton than others.

“That convinced me that this machine would be the best fit for us,” he said. “Using it has been wonderful, and I am so glad we purchased one. And, buying it through Pinnacle Cranes was phenomenal, and we had a great experience in working with [company president] Jim Mackinson and his team.”

Once he put the Magni RTH, or rotating telescopic handler, into the thick of the action, he quickly realized the other advantages that come with owning the piece.

“You can reach almost to 100 feet with this machine,” Rogg said. “At that height directly above you, it can support a wood cracker attachment that weighs 2,000 pounds, and you can still grab-cut 3,300 pounds of wood material, which is really quite impressive. Once you get even closer, the Magni lets you grab and hold 10,000 pounds to lift over houses and fences.”

He learned from Pinnacle Cranes, too, that Tree Experts was one of the first companies in North Carolina to obtain a Magni telehandler with the accompanying wood-cracker attachment. The manufacturer is based in Italy, but its products are distributed by dozens of dealers across the United States and Canada.

Made for One Another

Rogg recalled that when he came to North Carolina from Connecticut years ago it was simply to look for a respectable job. Once in the state, being a tree climber, to him, seemed like the best choice.

“I picked up a job with another company and learned from them for about six months or so before just going off on my own in the business,” he said.

That led to his forming Tree Experts, and, throughout the years, as his list of clients and projects expanded, he continued buying more equipment to make the job easier and more efficient.

On the day he spoke with CEG, Tree Experts was working for a Greensboro homeowner in removing branches from three trees. But with the home, an outbuilding and a fence close by, Rogg said the job required the precision of the Magni telehandler.

“It just makes the job instantly easier instead of using a bucket truck or climbing and roping branches out, and then having to bring that vegetation around from the other side of the fence,” he said. “You are making three cuts versus 30 cuts, so it is a big timesaver. It will allow us to wrap up this job later in the afternoon after we process all the natural material. When we work in backyards, this is normally what we do.”

Rogg added that Tree Experts typically limits its work radius to within about 15 mi. of his Greensboro home, but with such a large population base in that part of the state’s Triad region (encompassing the cities of Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem), he has all the work that he can take on.

“It is hard to travel to other places because we are always so busy here in Guilford County. However, there are select jobs that we will accept. For instance, I am bringing our operation down to the coast this weekend because there are some special clients of mine in Morehead City that I will travel five hours to serve.”

Unique Advantages of High Reach Excavators for Demolition Projects

In a world where safety and precision reign supreme, cranes and wrecking balls are things of the past. High reach excavators have taken up the mantle as the go-to machine for demolition projects due to three unique advantages.

Fast Assembly

A converted high reach excavator engineered by C.W. Machine Worx can be assembled in two hours without assistance from additional equipment. These converted high reach excavators also only require one operator to attach their fronts. The operator can align the converted excavator’s stub front with the high reach front directly from the shipping truck. Once aligned, hydraulic pins from the modular joint attach the stub front to the high reach front and the machine is ready to operate.

“We refer to our converted high reach excavators as ‘selferecting machines’ because they put themselves together,” Company Wrench Fleet Product Support Trainer Ben Dowdy said.

“They use custom counterweights that can be both removed and placed on the carrier by the excavator itself. Other pieces of equipment are usually required to assemble machines of this size, but not with our converted high reach excavators.”

Precision

High reach excavators use shears and demolition processors to make exact cuts when demolishing structures. These materials fall from the structure in a contained area, making high reach excavators the ideal machine for highly populated, dense areas, according to the manufacturer.

This level of control becomes even greater when operators use a telescopic boom instead of a two or three-piece boom.

With the simple press of a button, operators can raise or lower the telescopic boom to make precise cuts across multiple working ranges. Two and three-piece booms require operators to add or remove sections of the boom to change working ranges.

“The learning curve for an operator is much easier with a telescopic boom,” Dowdy said. “When using a telescopic boom, you only have to worry about your boom and stick functions, like with a standard excavator. Three-piece booms feature a jib or mid-link function that allows the stick to bend up or down. This function is independent of the boom and stick functions so it adds another element to consider for operators. Ultimately, the decision between a telescopic boom and three-piece boom comes down to preference and working ranges.”

Industry Specific Features

The following high reach excavator designs can be installed to make the life of a demolition contractor easier:

• Tilted Cab — The cab tilts up to 45 degrees for increased operator visibility and comfort.

• Cab Interference Systems — This keeps the attachment from contacting the machine by slowing hydraulics when the operator reaches an unsafe working angle.

• Interchangeable Fronts — Converted high reach excavators are capable of using high reach fronts, long reach fronts, and standard fronts. This allows a single excavator to perform projects that normally require multiple machines.

Company Wrench offers factory-built high reach excavators from Kobelco and converted high reach excavators from C.W. Machine Worx.

With the 24/7 self-service videos, Epiroc simplifies the troubleshooting, maintenance and repair process for customers who prefer to complete their own routine maintenance and minor repairs on Epiroc equipment in their fleet. The videos include answers to frequently asked questions and feature experienced Epiroc Product Experts who walk through step-by-step instructions and recommend parts and tooling for completing specific service work and a range of common repairs on various Epiroc machines.

“Customers’ productivity is our top priority,” said Floris Timmers, business line manager of the parts and services division at Epiroc USA. “When it comes to heavy equipment in the mining and construction industries, time is money. Having just one machine down can bring an entire job site to a standstill, but there’s no need to wait for help on typical repairs. Sometimes it’s possible to do the trou-

bleshooting, repairs and maintenance yourself so you can get up and running as quickly as possible. That’s why we offer our 24/7 self-service videos.”

The self-service videos are available 24 hours, 7 days a week so operators and service technicians can access the information they need, right when they need it. In addition, each video is closed captioned, so if conditions don't allow for the users to hear clearly, they can still utilize the videos to help resolve their issue.

“Epiroc considers these videos to be an integral part of customer service,” said Jon Torpy, president and general manager Epiroc USA. “Our customer support team is realizing the impact that instructional videos can have in building customer relationships by offering assistance with a personal touch. Many times, it is quicker, easier and more convenient for an operator or service technician to watch a video explaining how they can solve their equipment issue than it is to figure it out through phone calls or texts.”

Epiroc USA currently has 50 instructional videos in its online library, which cover a variety of topics related to troubleshooting, maintenance issues and repairs, including troubleshooting sensor failure, winterizing, pre-walk inspection, e-stop and more.

Trucking Firm Makes Switch to SmithCo Side Dumps

Solving tough problems for its customers is important to SmithCo, and its team works with customers every step of the way to make sure they get what they need to do the job better.

That’s why when Kevin McGee of V McGee Inc. in Tennessee told SmithCo about his unique situation, sales manager Gerred Zeising dug in to develop a unique solution.

McGee needed a special set up for hauling coal ash (also called fly ash). Coal ash hauling is notoriously difficult and must adhere to special regulations.

V McGee Trucking had been using end dump trailers for these loads but started to think seriously about side dump trailers. It did not want the possibility of the end gate opening and leaving ash on the highway. This is especially important because any leak of fly ash during transport can lead to large fines and other penalties.

“I’d been using end dump trailers, but I needed something safer and more reliable for hauling fly

SmithCo helped V McGee design and build a quad-axle box truck, which was outside of its normal scope.

ash,” said McGee. “SmithCo helped me design and build a quad-axle box truck, which was outside of their normal scope. We designed a configuration that was able to do big hauls without a lot of extra weight in the trailer.”

The SmithCo engineering team collaborated with Zeising and McGee and designed the right setup for the job, a custom SHV-style truckmounted bodies on a quad axle. This setup met

McGee’s load hauling needs (about 80k pounds) without adding too much extra weight from the trailer itself.

The result? V McGee can now haul more loads of coal ash with more efficiency and less risk.

“The team at SmithCo was great from start to finish. The job wouldn’t be possible without these trailers,” McGee said.

Kenworth T680 Next Gen to Transport U.S. Capitol Tree

A Kenworth T680 Next Generation will transport the 2022 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree from the National Forests in North Carolina to Washington, D.C., with stops en route to a full slate of community celebrations.

This year’s U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree — a 78-ft. tall Red Spruce — is scheduled to be harvested Nov. 2 from the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. The tour theme is “From the Mountains to the Sea.”

Hardy Brothers Trucking was chosen to transport the tree. Founded in 1965, the Siloam, N.C.-based company has more than 100 dedicated drivers and 55 Kenworth trucks — including 11 T680 Next Generation models — pulling refrigerated trailers and hauling freight from coast to coast.

“We’re honored to receive this special opportunity to carry the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree on its journey to Washington, D.C.,” said Eddie Hardy, the company’s president.

The Hardy Brothers Trucking husband-and-wife driver team of Harold “Ed” Kingdon Jr. and Deborah Z. Kingdon was selected by the company for the honor of transporting the special tree. They will use a Kenworth T680 Next Gen equipped with a 76-in. mid-roof sleeper and the PACCAR Powertrain.

The T680 Next Gen also provides drivers with the latest Kenworth SmartWheel, customizable 15-in. digital display, fully LED lighting down the road, additional advanced driver assistance systems, and a comfortable cab and sleeper.

The public community celebrations begin Nov. 5. The official tree lighting ceremony on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol building is scheduled for Nov. 30. Smaller companion trees also will be provided to decorate offices inside of the U.S. Capitol building and other sites throughout Washington, D.C., along with handmade ornaments created by North Carolinians.

“Kenworth is proud to play a key role in helping deliver the ‘People’s Tree’ to Washington, D.C., for the ninth consecutive year,” said Genevieve Bekkerus, Kenworth director of marketing.

“The tour offers numerous opportunities to see this national symbol of celebration out on the highway or at the community events, and the Kenworth T680 Next Gen is the right truck for this important undertaking.”

The Kenworth T680 Next Gen was assembled by the employees at the Kenworth manufacturing plant in Chillicothe, Ohio.

“This annual journey is only possible with the help of strong community partnerships throughout North Carolina and beyond state lines,” said Bruce Ward, president of Choose Outdoors, the non-profit partner that supports the USDA Forest Service on the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree initiative. “We’re grateful for the time and resources provided by Kenworth and Hardy Brothers Trucking. We look forward to a great tour.”

Volvo to Begin Customer Testing Fuel Cell Trucks in 2025

Volvo Trucks are running tests of fuel cell electric trucks that only emit water vapor and have an operational range comparable to diesel trucks, up to 1,000 km. A second pilot phase is to follow in a few years’ time and will see customer tests on public roads.

The testing of fuel cell electric trucks in commercial traffic will start in 2025 with selected customers in northern Europe, followed by additional trucks in more countries over the coming years.

Hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric trucks will be especially suitable for long distance and heavy, energydemanding assignments. They also could be an option in countries where battery charging possibilities are limited.

“I believe that the pilot tests will highlight the potential for fuel cell electric trucks. The tests will run in a demanding, harsh climate and it also give us a great opportunity for driving with heavy loads up 65 ton,” said Jessica Sandström, SvPglobal product management at Volvo Trucks.

The goal of the pilot tests will be to look at all different aspects of the truck’s operation including working components, handling and driver experience.

A fuel cell generates its own electricity from the hydrogen onboard instead of being charged from an external source. The only biproduct emitted is water vapor. Volvo’s electric trucks will use two fuel cells with a capacity to generate 300 kW of power and will have a refuel time of less than 15 minutes.

Fuel cell technology is still in an early phase of development and while there are many benefits there remains some chal-

lenges, not least the large-scale supply of green hydrogen and need to develop fueling infrastructure. (Green hydrogen is produced by using renewable energy sources, such as wind, water and sun.)

To overcome the lack of available hydrogen when running the pilots, the filling of green hydrogen from renewable sources will be done at the home-depot.

“We expect the supply of green hydrogen to increase significantly during the next cou-

ple of years, since many industries will depend on it to reduce CO2. The fuel cell trucks will be important for longer and heavier transportations in a few years from now,” said Sandström.

The fuel cells will be supplied by Cellcentric — the joint venture between the Volvo Group and Daimler Truck AG. Cellcentric will build one of Europe’s largest series production facilities for fuel-cells, especially developed for heavy vehicles. 

Among the latter products that James River carries that are vital for contractors is the Epiroc line of drilling equipment, which McGlothlin characterizes as the premier class of rockdrilling tools in the country.

“And we are proud to represent that manufacturer,” he said. “We were Epiroc’s top dealer in the country last year.”

James River also distributes an impressive list of material-handling manufacturers that, along with Epiroc, helps the dealership capitalize on a bit of resurgence in southwestern Virginia’s coal industry, McGlothlin said.

“We think the coal business still has some legs to it in the region and we have worked to engage more in that industry,” he added.

Material-Handling Division Creates Choice

James River also has created its own material-handling division in the past few years to sell, rent and service machines purpose-built for several different industries. That brought construction products such as crushers, screeners and conveyors to its yards and showrooms, in addition to machines for the forestry, scrap metal, recycling and agricultural trades.

With the new division, McGlothlin said, James River provides customers with total support and replacement parts for each line.

“When you talk about the affiliated lines we have, one of the world’s best is SENNEBOGEN, which makes material handlers for construction and forestry,” McGlothlin said. “In addition, Wirtgen makes mobile crushers and conveyors, but we have also taken on ancillary lines like Rubble Master, which also makes that equipment, and Superior, a company that produces the stationary crushers. So, we have everything from screeners to small crushers to commercial crushers at many area rock quarries and construction sites.”

and

For Finch, he has enjoyed seeing James River’s growth from simply being a dealer of John Deere excavation equipment to one that offers a diverse set of machinery from different manufacturers.

“Of course, we have always had other equipment lines, but we are now able to help contractors take the rock out of the ground, crush it, process it and get it to their companies to lay as base and apply rollers to it,” he said. “It is the same on the forestry side, where the equipment we supply cuts trees, feeds them into wood hogs, and chips them. Our customers do that with the mulching and screening machines we sell that are made by companies like Morbark and Doppstadt.”

DealershipÊs Branches

All Row in Same Direction

James River Equipment recently unified its branches — no matter their specialties — to better steer the direction of the company and continue its 45 years of success, according to McGlothlin.

“I love what we are doing together,” he said. “In the last 12 months, we have really started working as James River Equipment, rather than just James River Construction & Forestry or James River Agricultural & Turf. We have coordination meetings now on a quarterly basis with the company’s personnel in Buchanan, Boones Mill, Amherst and Salem, and that includes all the parts and service management. In those meetings, we talk about synergies that we can create between each other to enhance the presence of James River in the region while improving these collective resources for our valued customers.”

Boyett said.

“The dredging allows the larger ships to bring more cargo in. Four of the top ports — Baton Rouge, Southern Louisiana, New Orleans and Plaquemines Parrish — rank in the Top 15 ports in the country. The deepening keeps them competitive with other ports and maintains it for Panamax and post Panamax ships. Those ships can come in now, but they can’t come in with a full load. The project allows more cargo per trip.”

The Corps maintains the deep draft channel by continuously dredging it using hopper dredges. It is the single biggest Corps project, Boyett said. The deepening dredge work for the project comes with the additional challenge of ensuring they don’t make contact with utilities beneath the river.

“We have to dredge it and make sure alignment is most efficient and then we also have to work with the state to get pipeline and utilities at a safe depth or relocated,” Boyett said. “The Corps is handing the dredging. The state has the lead for pipeline and utilities relocation.”

The plan originally identified 14 pipelines to be relocated by late 2023. Now, there are fewer pipelines to move, but work may not be complete until at least 2025, said Chris Collins, director of waterways for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. Two additional pipelines were discovered between mile marker 10 and 11 above Head of Passes (AHP), an area not usually dredged because of currents. Then, a reevaluation of the plans called into question the need for the planned relocating of all the pipelines.

“Six months ago, we started a conversation about the pipelines in the Baton Rouge, which includes seven out of original 14,” Collins said. “There are seven in Baton Rouge between old the Mississippi bridge and new Mississippi bridge, starting at mile post 232. 7. The plan was to move all of those and deepen to mile marker 233. The ships can’t go past the old bridge because of the height. That was built to prevent ships going up Mississippi and they had to stop at Baton Rouge. We determined there are no deep draft docks above mile marker 232.4, so why try to remove them at that steep cost? Now, we’re down to nine — two of which have been abandoned. That’s just one of those things, you have this plan and then you go, ‘hey let’s look at this again’.”

One of the challenges in getting the relocations completed

USACE photo

One of the challenges in getting the pipeline relocations completed is to do so without blocking river traffic, commerce that tallies billions of dollars daily.

is to do so without blocking river traffic, commerce that tallies billions of dollars daily. To shut traffic down even 12 hours would be a “huge deal,” Collins said. Until the pipelines can be moved, the dredge will go around them. When the work moves forward, crews will replace each existing pipeline with a new, deeper one, then switch the utility to it, then disconnect and cut out the old pipeline.

“They can’t pull it out through the levees, so they have to cut and cap so they don’t disturb the levee,” Collins said. “It’s a lot more involved than you’d think and lot more expensive than people realize.”

Boyett estimated that about $45 million of the $250 million budget is for pipeline removal.

“We figured about $3 million per pipeline, but it is coming out more like $5 million,” he said. “What a budget buster. Some thought we might not even get to finish the project because of those numbers. But now that we only have to do the seven — the Corps doesn’t have to pay to remove two that were abandoned — we’re kind of getting back on budget.”

In addition to opening up the river to larger ships, the project is also benefitting wildlife and the environment. The Corps was able to use the dredged sediment from the first phase of the project to build 1,600 acres of critical marsh

habitat at the mouth of the river, including wetlands in the federally owned Delta National Wildlife Refuge and the state-owned Pass-a-Loutre Wildlife Management Area.
