S.T. Wooten is finishing up a multi-year construction project to double the traffic capacity on I-95 in North Carolina. This massive project covers 18.2 mi. and is now 82 percent complete. Final details will stretch into 2025, but by then motorists will already be enjoying two additional

lanes in each direction on this highway, providing less congestion and greater safety.

In addition to the new highway lanes, Wooten has demolished and replaced eight of the nine bridges for the project. The new bridges will

Construction Workforce Demands

May Outstrip Quality Labor Pool

Industry Tries to Fill Jobs, But Incoming Workers Often Lack Basic Skills

The good news: The Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) is infusing the transportation and energy construction sectors with hundreds of billions of dollars. The not-so-good news: the lack of well-prepared workers is almost as great as the lack of workers, period. Combine the two and the result is a potentially insurmountable challenge for the transportation construction industry.

Skanska Completes Coachman Park Project in Clearwater

Skanska USA, a construction and development firm, announced the delivery of the highly anticipated Coachman Park, a transformative waterfront redevelopment in Downtown Clearwater, Fla., that is creating a world-class outdoor destination that will serve both locals and visitors.

Undertheapproximately$72millionconstruction contract with the city of Clearwater, Skanska provided construction management at risk services to build the waterfront park and entertainment venue inclusive of new outdoor amenities, enhanced public spaces and increased public safety. The public space sits within the 24acre iconic Coachman Park in Clearwater’s

city center.

Designed by Skanska’s project partner Stantec Engineering, the scope of work focused on redeveloping 19 acres within the park grounds including building a shaded bluff walk that connects the park to the city’s downtown, new gardens and a scenic lake, and adding recreational amenities to enhance pedestrian activity, the cycling experience and support community events. The renovation encompassed building a modern pirate-themed playground featuring $1.2 million of new equipment, an interactive splash pad, a lake with a pedestrian bridge, picnic pavilions and new bathrooms, among other amenities.

“Our construction team at Skanska is immensely proud of the new outdoor destination we have delivered with the completion of this innovative waterfront park that will cater to the Clearwater community and its visitors for decades to come,” said Chuck Jablon, senior vice president of construction for Skanska’s Florida building operations.

“Coachman Park exemplifies how local governments can invest in transforming underutilized public spaces into active outdoor destinations that enhance their communities and serve as a catalyst for further economic growth.”

The park’s centerpiece is a 4,000-seat covered concert venue with capacity for

5,000 more eventgoers on the connected lawn. Given that Clearwater’s downtown waterfront sits at an elevation unique along Florida’s coastline, the design and construction team focused on further activating the prime location by enhancing the unparalleled views of the IntracoastalWaterway and downtown Clearwater.

Skanska’s long-standing commitment to the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area includes the construction of several high-profile public space and park projects delivered in recent years, including the St. Petersburg Pier, Pier Approach and Gateway,JulianB.LaneRiverfrontParkand Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. 

ConstructionBeginsOn$14MLevee,FloodwallProjectinLouisiana

A number of officials in Louisiana representing the state, Jefferson Parish and the town of Jean Lafitte were on hand Sept. 5 near Bayou Barataria to celebrate the beginning of a $14 million levee and floodwall project that aims to bolster protections for the flood-prone community against tidal surge.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that the Lower Lafitte Basin Tidal Surge Project is a collaboration between the Lafitte Area Independent Levee District, the Louisiana Coastal Protection Restoration Authority (CPRA), the state Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), and Jefferson Parish.

The effort is the third in recent years that seeks to protect the greater Lafitte area against storm surge and will add another 3 mi. of levee protection when completed.

Bren Haase, chairman of the Louisiana CPRA, called the project’s groundbreaking a “significant step” in the area’s protection.

“The greater Lafitte area not only plays a pivotal role in the Louisiana seafood industry

but is also home to a unique, vital and irreplaceable culture,” he told the New Orleans news source. “We cannot afford to sit by and do nothing as we continue to experience stronger and more frequent storms.”

Only So Much Resilience

Built along Bayou Barataria parallel to Jean Lafitte Boulevard, the levee project will include more than 7,000 ft. of a concretecapped floodwall, another 7,300-ft. long modified earthen levee, and 2,800 ft. of newly constructed earthen levee — all of whichwillbe7-ft.-6-in.tallandtotalingmore than 3 mi. in length.

Additionally, the construction includes three swing gates and one roller gate.

The$14millionpricetagwillbepaidfrom a combination of CRPA, DOTD, Gulf of Mexico SecurityAct and state Capital Outlay funds, the Times-Picayune reported.

Jefferson Parish Council member Ricky Templet said Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav, Isaac and Zeta all brought tidal

surges of 6 ft. or less.

However, he described Hurricane Ida in 2021 as “a different beast” that inundated the area with 11 ft. of water. If the levee had been taller back then, Templet noted, only Ida would have flooded the area.

“The people are resilient, but they can only take it so many times,” he added. “Hopefully this gives us a break from the smaller storms.”

Lafitte Mayor Tim Kerner Jr. said all that water, mud and debris from Ida brought an “immense amount of human suffering.”

He added, “These people down here, arguably ground zero for Hurricane Ida, they’ve been left out of federal levee protection. This levee really symbolizes that they matter to the people in state government.”

Project — Third of 10 Lafitte Levees to Be Built

Haase said the various Louisiana groups represented at the groundbreaking may acquire federal funding to build a 100-year

hurricane protection levee in the future. The current levee project is the third in a series of 10 planned projects in the Lafitte Tidal Programthatincludes30mi.oflevees,floodwalls and other protections, the TimesPicayune reported.

The Fisher School Basin, a project that added 3 mi. of sheet pile and concrete cap floodwall, was completed in 2018, and the Rosethorne Basin project, which broke ground last March will add 10,300 ft. of concrete-capped floodwall and floodgates at an elevation of 7-ft.-6-in.

Improvements to Goose Bayou, Pailet Basin, Crown Point Basin, Lower Barataria Basin, Upper LA 45, Lower LA 45, and Jones Point Basin are all planned for down the road.

Templet said $12 million has been spent on project design over the years, paid for by funds from his office’s discretionary account, BP Oil settlement money, the Restore Act and district discretionary funds. 

In the past 45 years, the company began to recognize that North America was becoming its most lucrative market. As a result, it started Takeuchi US in 1979 to distribute its products to contractors via U.S. and Canadian dealerships hungry for its compact equipment.

Eventually, that led Takeuchi to acquire factory space in Moore, S.C., just south of Spartanburg, in April 2022 with the intention of dedicating it solely to the manufacture of compact track loaders (CTLs).

By last September, production officially began on the machines at the 156,000-sq.-ft. facility, and in mid-April of this year, the equipment maker had turned out its 1,000th compact loader at the site, a model TL12R2.

Currently, four Takeuchi compact track loaders are coming off the assembly line in Moore: the TL6, TL8, TL10 and the TL12 models.

“For us, this plant represents a natural progression,” said Jeff Stewart, president of Takeuchi US. “When you look at CTLs, the U.S. consumes about 95 percent of Takeuchi’s production. They were made in Japan to begin with, but it just made sense to get the production closer to the most consumers. We started looking for a place to build a plant and we were very fortunate to find this facility here in South Carolina. After we bought it, production on our CTLs began as soon as possible.”

The decision also eliminated the need to ship CTLs from an overseas facility to North American dealers and customers. As Takeuchi’s global markets expand, the company expects to export some machines from the United States to other countries.

Stewart said that, for the foreseeable future, all Takeuchi

CTLs built in Moore are strictly for U.S. consumption. Short term, the company wants to be able to assemble all CTL models in the upstate South Carolina plant by the end of this year.

“Our goal in the next 24 months is that we will make all Takeuchi compact loaders for the worldwide market from this plant and then start exporting them to other countries,” he said. “The places that we primarily export to areAustralia and New Zealand, and our sister company in France is sell-

ing a lot of them there. Each of those areas outside of the U.S. are where our CTLs are gaining in popularity.”

Founder Created Mini-Excavators, Invented CTLs

Prior to launching Takeuchi Manufacturing, Akio Takeuchi was a supplier of machine components for other big companies in his native country.

Several years after his company was established,Takeuchi introduced the first compact excavator in 1971 after having been asked to create a small excavator that could work specifically on house foundations.

“A plumber friend of his out digging holes around houses wondered whether Mr. Takeuchi could make the job easier on him,” said Stewart. “So, Mr. Takeuchi adapted the large excavator design by shrinking it down and putting it onto a 360-degree swivel platform so they could work closer to homes.”

What he came up with was a versatile mini-excavator able to perform better than its larger counterparts, Stewart said, setting the stage for one of the highest growth product segments ever introduced in the compact equipment market.

Later, Takeuchi continued to lead the compact industry with the introduction of the first CTL in North America. According to Stewart, the company began selling that machine in 1986.

“Most people don’t know that Mr. Takeuchi was the inventor of the compact track loader.”

Since then, the popularity of Takeuchi CTLs has grown to the point that they are now the machine of choice for many contractors, Stewart said.

“We made a dedicated CTL,” he said, “as well as purposebuilt the frame of the machine, added the tracks to it and got the stability where it needed to be. When it comes to compact loaders, that design is our biggest claim to fame.”

Partially Made CTLs Sent to South Carolina for Final Assembly

Today, Takeuchi’s Japanese factories send its CTL components to the Palmetto State plant for assembly.

FourTipsforAttractingGenerationZtoSkilledTradeJobs

Skilled trades and the tradespeople responsible for this work have long been an important part of our society — responsible for building, repairing and maintaining many facets of our everyday life. Over the years, fewer people are entering these professions.

Generation Z — the generation born between 1997 and 2012 — have gravitated toward college degrees or careers in technology. To bridge the gap and ensure the continued success of skilled trades, it’s important to attract new workers into these rewarding professions. While there are many approaches, here are four tips to help skilled trade jobs appeal to younger generations.

Support Skilled Trade Education

In a society that tends to prioritize college education, it’s important to advocate for a cultural shift. Parents and educators play a vital role in sharing the many career paths available and give skilled trade career paths the same reverence and attention as higher education.

Gen Z and younger generations face financial challenges, including student loan debt and the rising cost of living. Many are seeking well-paying careers that don’t necessarily require a traditional four-year degree. Skilled trade jobs offer just that.

It’s also important to note the earning potential within the skilled trades. Tradespeople can earn competitive wages, and those with specialized skills often command even higher pay. Providing real-world examples of successful tradespeople who have achieved financial stability can motivate Gen Z to consider these professions as viable and lucrative career choices.

Establish Connections With Youth

Businesses and professionals can encourage Gen Z and

younger generations to consider trade careers by engaging with them early, even during their formative years in middle and high school.

By highlighting their specific businesses and the industry, they can capture the attention and interest of potential future employees.

One of the key ways we support this as an organization is by supporting STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) opportunities for students at an early age — whether that be grants, mentorship, education and more.

Agrowing number of businesses today also are making connections within trade schools to tap into tomorrow’s workforce. Companies are engaging students through internships, preapprenticeships, apprenticeships, curriculum support and other creative ways that not only help prepare students for skilled trade jobs, but also create an avenue to fill positions.

Embrace Technology

Gen Z is a tech-savvy generation. Growing up with the latest technology from a young age, it plays a significant role in their lives. One of the most effective ways to attract Gen Z to skilled trade jobs is by embracing technology in the workplace. Integrating modern tools and software into skilled trades can make these jobs more appealing.

For instance, construction sites are now using drones for site surveys and 3D printing for faster and more precise building processes. Manufacturing facilities, like Bobcat, leverage robotics in the factories for increased efficiency and precision. By highlighting these tech-driven aspects, you can show Gen Z that

skilled trades are not only hands-on but also forward-thinking and adaptable.

Opportunities for Development

Personal and professional growth is important for all generations, and Gen Z is no different. By offering a career with clear pathways for advancement, young professionals can understand the opportunities available.

Mentors or managers of young employees may consider a coaching approach over a more authoritarian method to guide and partner with young professionals on their career journey. By demonstrating the potential for career progression and the chance to acquire valuable skills, you can make skilled trades a more appealing option for Gen Z job seekers.

As you embark on the journey of investing in your workforce, remember that you are contributing to the transformation of young individuals into seasoned professionals. This transformation is not solely limited to their careers but extends to their role in society. Nurturing the potential of the millennial and Gen Z workforce requires a more engaging, compassionate and communicative approach — one that brings out the best in them as they work alongside you to build a brighter future.

Attracting Gen Z to skilled trade jobs requires creativity and adaptability. By supporting skilled trade education, establishing connections with students as they explore careers, embracing technology and fostering development opportunities, you can make these essential professions more appealing to the younger generation. With their enthusiasm and fresh perspectives, Gen Z has the potential to breathe new life into the skilled trades and ensure a prosperous future for these industries. 

Construction Job Sites Will See Digital Transformation

Technology has been evolving quickly, and it isn’t stopping anytime soon. As a result, the equipment used on job sites has evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of the construction professionals, and the industry must find ways to adopt these new technologies in order to be successful.

In recent years, there has been talk of an oncoming digital transformation coming to the job site — and while there are some components of this transformation that have yet to be realized, in many ways the industry’s digital transformation has already begun.

During his ConExpo-Con/AGG 2023 educational session, “Digital Transformation of the Job Site,” Jason Anetsberger of AEM member company Komatsu spoke on the technology that is available to us today, as well as where the industry could be headed.

“You see these themes of digitalization, automation and sustainability — in my mind those are not just industry trends, they are a reality today,” said Anetsberger. “And the progression is the medium in which the digital transformation will take root.”

A digital transformation in any industry is defined as the process of adopting and implementing new digital technologies in order to enhance current products and services, or to create new products and services.

In the construction industry, the digital technologies that will enhance the products and services of the future include automation, digital modeling and smart equipment.

In the equipment manufacturing industry, it is essential that OEMs grow their capabilities and build trust in these new technolo-

provide customers with data-driven guidance in real time. This is currently happening, whether in the cloud or through interconnected apps. There are a variety of sources in which digitalization is present, and it’s a concept that has been at work in the industry for years in some shape or form.

• Automation has been in use for years. However, tech capabilities continue to be siloed. It’s critically important recorded data and automated parts are able to work together, and that all data is able to be recorded and utilized. Automation empowers safer and more optimized job sites by leveraging increasingly automated equipment and processes. This is a reality currently in the form of self-driving personal vehicles, and automated vehicles have been in use for decades in mining.

say automation. And we are progressing in that direction. But what’s just as important is the sophistication and optimization of the jobsite processes,” said Anetsberger. “What good is an autonomous vehicle if it doesn’t know where to go?”

According to Anetsberger, this is the biggest challenge today. Many times, customers give directives verbally, but if the construction industry can get on the same page in terms of digital processes, the digital transformation will occur much more efficiently.

gies with their end-users.

During his session, Anetsberger outlined the phases of the digital transformation while mapping out what technology is already available to consumers:

• Digitization allows the industry to integrate technology and product offerings to

• Sustainability connects customers with both product level and jobsite level tech to minimize carbon emissions and improve efficiency. Sustainability has been thrust into the spotlight in recent years, and strides can be made with the help of digitalization and automation. Ultimately, jobsite efficiency leads to sustainability, and that can be realized through the digital transformation.

“When I go to end-users and ask them what the future of the job site looks like, they

In the future, the construction industry will work toward achieving a job site in which digital tasks are created from the optimal construction plan, and autonomy works in harmony with the machinery on a job site. So much of what we use on a job site currently collects data — from telematics to terrain data. Drones allow for surveying the jobsite accurately. And a worker with a smart phone is the most flexible and perhaps useful information source available, as end-users can take that data and compile it to utilize it to its fullest.

“If we do it right a lot of these solutions are fairly simple and easy to adopt, and the value they bring is almost immediate,” said Anetsberger. 

“They arrive here about 65 percent complete from Japan,” according to Stewart. “We do some disassembly work to them where we take the arms and cabs off before performing all the sub-assembly of the arms as well as the whole front of the machine, the quick hitches, the hydraulic cylinders and the entire cab work.”

Following that, Stewart said, paint is applied to the arms, cylinders, quick hitches and many of the metal components underneath the machine. Everything that was disassembled is then put back together and re-installed onto the CTL in time to roll off the line.

“So, although we are building 35 percent of the loader here in Moore, our intention is that we will be at 100 percent in the next couple years,” he said. “Plus, we will move from semi-knocked down [SKD] production, to CKD, or complete knocked down production, meaning we will build it from bare metal to finished machine before it goes out the door.”

Stewart said Takeuchi US wants that to occur sometime in 2025.

“When we are up to full production here in South Carolina this November, we will increase our capacity by more than 50 percent over Japan’s,” he predicted, adding, “I think that when all is said and done, about 40 percent of the overall number of CTLs Takeuchi makes will be produced here in Moore.”

Electric Over Hydraulic CTLs On Horizon

Takeuchi also is working to begin building its first electric over hydraulic compact loaders, starting with the TL11 model. Stewart said the company’s equipment dealers are eagerly awaiting the new product, engineered to allow for much more flexibility regarding attachments and operator preferences.

The TL11 is not an electric machine, he clarified, but a diesel CTL controlled by electric over hydraulic functionality.

“Right now, all of our machines, except for our truly dedicated electric mini-excavators, have hydraulic pilot controls, meaning when an operator moves the handle it pushes a plunger that causes the pilot pressure to go down through the control valve to make the machine move,” Stewart said.

“The TL11 will be different in that it will be electronically controlled with a pressure-sensing switch that will detect what it needs to do. It will send a pulse to the brains of the machine to change the control valve. That also gives the operator flexibility to change various other functions and set it to work exactly as he or she wants it to.”

Takeuchi US Working On More Eco-Friendly Products

In recent years, Takeuchi has been moving toward engineering construction equipment that relies on electric vehicle (EV) technology and, as a result, has seen good sales numbers from its first EV battery-operated mini-excavator, the TB20e model.

That has led the manufacturer’s designers to put three more electric excavator models on the drawing board, including five-, four-, and one-ton machines, said Stewart.

Takeuchi’s efforts are part of its green initiatives and a desire to be a good steward of the global environment. For instance, he noted that the equipment maker has invested more than $3 million just this year to install solar panels in its American facilities, with goal of becoming carbon neutral

by the midpoint of next year.

He cautions, though, that EV technology is still in its infancy and there are challenges that need to be overcome.

“The construction equipment industry is behind the car industry when it comes to EVs, but we are catching up with them,” Stewart said. “The problem that we have, obviously, is the cost. You can make a car battery larger and do different things with it but trying to fit a battery that we need into a compact excavator raises that cost substantially. Of course, our engineers are working tirelessly to adapt and make bat-

teries smaller, thereby reducing the cost. Right now, though, that is the biggest barrier I see to full entry into the market.

“We have made our TB20e probably more friendly than anybody else’s,” he added. “You can charge it on a 110 triple charge while you run the machine, you can charge it on 220 volts to power it up at night, or you can do it on an off-board 480-volt charger. So, we have put the time and energy required to power our machines into the consumer’s hands.”

AGC:‘TimetoRethinkWayU.S.Educates,PreparesWorkers’

In early September, the AGC presented a pretty bleak picture of “the flaws in the nation’s approach to preparing workers for construction careers.”

The association conducted a survey with Autodesk to give a comprehensive update on members’ experiences with staffing issues.AGC’s 11th annual workforce-related survey boils it down to a major problem that goes beyond simply workforce supply and demand.

Yes, the industry needs more people. But, said Ken Simonson, chief economist, it’s “time to rethink the way the nation educates and prepares workers.”

The IRA’s target is to electrify transportation and energy infrastructure that has historically run on fossil fuels. And while it will result in millions of new craft jobs well into the future, the challenge is to not only find craft workers, but skilled craftsmen and women.

More Than Just Warm Bodies

The Biden administration’s critics preach of the need to staunch labor shortages, but also train workers to take on potentially new and different careers.

“The demand for these types of skilled laborers and workers will outstrip the supply,” said Sanjay Patnaik, a director of the Brookings Institution.

The IRA’s low-carbon transition base is “shifting our economy from fossil fuels to electrification,” said Patnaik.

“That requires a trained workforce,” he added, in an interview with Politico’s energy news network.

While the climate legislation beefed up energy tax credits and rebates, what it didn’t do was provide for training for clean energy

and affiliated workers.

In a “missed opportunity,” those programs were cut from the final bill, said Jason Walsh, executive director of labor and environmental organization BlueGreen Alliance.

“We won’t be able to make and build and power our way to a clean energy economy,” said Walsh.

We also won’t be able to “create a workforce that looks like America and achieves our equity goals,” he added.

That is, “unless we bring to bear intentional workforce strategies and the public investments to support them,” Walsh said.

One California contractor whose company installs EVcharging stations is hurting for electricians and blames it on insufficient fed workforce development.

“Demand is happening so fast, it’s hard to find people that have actually installed charging stations before,” said Ariel Fan of GreenWealth Energy.

But electrical contractors association NECA believes the aging construction workforce is setting the industry up for failure.

“Like a lot of other industries, we’re facing this upcoming retirement boom, with the baby boomers starting to retire,” Marco Giamberardino told Politico.

The senior vice president of government and public affairs added, “We’re putting a lot into the recruiting side to get young people into the trades.”

So are the feds, according to Politico. In fact, the White House is eyeing IRA tax credit bonuses as a contractor incentive to offer prevailing wages. The Biden administration also wants contractors to hire apprentices through project labor agreements with union organizations. And the DOE is requir-

ing community benefit plans for grant and loan projects.

The benefit plans must be built around local workforce development and engagement with organized labor, reported Politico. DOE is mitigating workforce shortage risks by encouraging investments in training and job quality, said Betony Jones, director, DOE office of energy jobs.

“We have a lot of untapped talent in this country — workers who are not participating in the labor market because they face barriers to employment,” she said. “As we make jobs more accessible to women, veterans, formerly incarcerated workers and others, employers will have an easier time filling open positions.”

The feds are in favor of unions’ training and apprenticeship programs, which they say are key to expanding the American workforce.

“This administration will continue to work with unions, educational institutions and industry to train Americans,” Robyn Patterson, White House spokesperson, told Politico. “But it’s up to companies to provide the wages, benefits and job quality necessary to retain and attract the talent they need.”

Industry: Fed Shares Burden

AGC believes efforts to not only attract craft workers but raise skills bar should be shared with the federal government.

“The biggest takeaway from this year’s workforce survey is how much the nation is failing to prepare future workers for careers in fields like construction,” said Simonson. “Too often, the applicants who are available lack even the basic qualifications needed to be employable.”

TheAGC’s survey found that, in fact, few

candidates have the basic skills needed to work in high-paying construction careers.

As a result, contractors are forced to find new ways to keep pace with demand and factors undermining efforts to build infrastructure and other projects.

The association survey highlights those significant shortcomings in the nation’s approach to preparing entering construction workers. AGC reported that 85 percent of construction firms have open positions they are trying to fill, and 88 percent are having trouble filling at least some positions.

This is true particularly among the craft workforce that performs the bulk of onsite construction work, said the association.

“Largely similar results were reported by contractors that use exclusively union craft labor and by firms that operate as open-shop employers.”

It didn’t matter, either, if firms had $50 million or less in annual revenue or more than $500 million in revenue. Nor did the numbers differ by region.

The construction specialty, including highway and transportation projects, federal and heavy work, or utility infrastructure, made no difference.

Simonson noted one of the main reasons labor shortages are so severe is that most job candidates are not qualified to work in the industry. He considered the fact that 68 percent of firms report applicants lack the skills needed to work in construction “shocking.”

Simonson maintains workforce shortages are worsening supply chain disruptions and driving up the cost of much-needed construction materials.

“While these shortages have recently shown signs of abating, 65 percent of firms

Not only is the construction industry in dire need of workers, they need to be better trained to perform quality construction work. LABOR from page 1 Some 61 percent of respondents to AGC’s workforce survey reported projects they’ve worked on have been delayed due to labor shortages.

Wirtgen Cold Milling Machine Performs in Narrow Spaces

Wirtgen’s high-performance W 150 F(i) rounds off the top end of the compact milling machine class.

With a milling width of 6 ft., this model is an ideal choice for use on major construction sites with restricted space, for example in inner city locations. Compact dimensions and optimized machine weight for easy transportation means these machines are predestined for a multitude of different construction site scenarios. In combination with the intuitive operating design, digital assistance systems and the LEVEL PRO ACTIVE leveling system allow for efficient one-man operation.

Environmentally-Friendly Engine Technology From John Deere

The agile front loader with a standard working width of 5 ft. features the latest and currently most eco-friendly engine technology compliant with EU Stage 5 / U.S. Tier IV Final exhaust emission standards. The 9-liter John Deere engine offers a maximum rated output of 315 kW and has been specially adapted to meet the special needs of cold milling applications. It’s impressive with its high torque and simultaneously low noise emissions under all load conditions.

The machine’s fuel consumption also is significantly lower, even when delivering the highest milling performance and milling to a maximum working depth of 330 mm, the manufacturer said.

Digital Assistance, Leveling Systems

Mill Assist, Wirtgen Performance Tracker (WPT) and the leveling system LEVEL PRO ACTIVE assist operating personnel and increase milling efficiency. These systems have already provided clear proof of their potential in the other Fseries cold milling machines.

In the case of the W 150 F(i), the largest milling machine in the compact class, users also benefit from higher milling performance, increased efficiency and, due to an automatically-generated construction site report, clearly structured documentation of all site-relevant data.

Mill Assist for Increased Milling Efficiency

In automatic mode, Mill Assist selects the operating strategy with the most favorable balance between milling performance and operating costs. This increases the milling performance while simultaneously reducing diesel fuel and water consumption, pick wear and CO2 emissions.

Mill Assist controls engine speed automatically according to the needs of the operator. The wide range of possible engine speeds means that the machine’s uses are equally broad. The lower speed range enables a significant reduction of diesel fuel consumption and pick wear. In the upper speed range, an optimum milling pattern can be achieved even at higher area performance rates.

The operator can also select one of three performance strategies. These are: “ECO”, “performance-optimized”, and “milling pattern quality.” This makes it possible, for example, to pre-define the required milling pattern quality incrementally from coarse to very fine at the press of a button.

Precise Leveling With LEVEL PRO ACTIVE

The LEVEL PROACTIVE leveling system is installed as a standard feature of the W 150 F(i). Developed by Wirtgen especially for cold milling machines, the leveling system features an intuitive operating design and ensures precise milling results. The machine has an improved basic configuration for the integration of 3D and laser leveling systems and a revised Multiplex system with three-fold scanning.

All sensors and measurement values are displayed in an easy-to-read format on the control panel in order to maximize process efficiency. The system is fully integrated in the control system of the cold milling machine. Important

machine functions are directly interconnected, allowing for a high degree of automation.

Modern Cockpit, Also Available With Enclosed Cabin

The operator’s platform is characterized by ergonomically-designed control elements with high-quality haptics and maximum ease of operation. The machine’s laterallyadjustable operator’s platform ensures an excellent view along the zero-clearance side.

Acamera/monitor system with two to six cameras enables an ideal overview of areas that are otherwise hard to see from the operator’s platform. The 5-in. control screen in the multifunctional armrest displays all machine-relevant information. The optional enclosed cabin minimizes the negative effects of noise, dust, and other site-related irritants on the operator and provides a comfortable working environment.

Wirtgen Cutting Technology Reduces Toolholder Wear

The cold milling machine W 150 F(i) is equipped with the wear-resistant quick-change HT22 toolholder system with the field-proven top part HT22 PLUS. In combination with the new Generation X² round-shank picks, this reduces toolholder wear by up to 25 percent. Customers benefit from longer pick replacement intervals and the ability to quickly and easily change picks on-the construction site.

The quick-change system for milling drums, MCS (Multiple Cutting System), enables rapid adjustment of working width and ensures outstanding flexibility.

With its smart compaction concept, Hamm combines a range of cutting-edge solutions for measuring, documenting and analyzing compaction processes.

Alongside its “Smart Doc” app, Hamm introduces a second compaction assistant in the form of “Smart Compact”. In addition to this, the roller manufacturer is already now enabling users to integrate collision prevention systems by means of a PDS interface (proximity detection system).

Smart Compact: Intelligent Compaction Assistant

Coinciding with the launch of the new tandem rollers from the HX series, Hamm also is bringing the Smart Compact assistant to market. This system actively supports drivers in selecting the right drum and the right type of compaction (vibration, oscillation or static).

When operating the roller, the drivers simply specify whether a base, binder or asphalt surface course is to be compacted. Smart Compact takes care of the rest.

The system does this by evaluating different physical properties of the asphalt, such as the temperature or rigidity. It also takes into account the complex cooling behavior of the asphalt. There also is the option of integrating a weather station to provide local weather information.

Smart Compact uses all of this information to determine the most suitable compaction settings for each of the two

drums. This makes Hamm the first manufacturer in the world to automate the separate setting of the individual drums, increase process reliability and raise the quality of the compaction to a whole new level, according to the manufacturer.

Fuel Savings Included

Equipped with these measured values, Smart Compact recognizes when dynamic compaction is no longer advisable — for instance, if the asphalt temperature is too low. The system then automatically cancels the dynamic compaction and puts the roller into ECO mode. This reduces the engine speed by up to 20 percent. This alone reduces fuel consumption by up to 15 percent. Because of this, Smart Compact preserves not only the machine but resources too.

Modern Operation

From the operator’s perspective, one of the best things about the assistant is how easy it is to use.

Data input and data output are managed via a dedicated display on the dashboard; and because it turns with the seat, the driver can always view all the relevant information. The user guidance has been developed through a UX design process. As such, it combines the demands of machine operation with the contemporary look and feel, i.e. handling, of smartphones and other digital devices. This allows workers to give their full focus to driving the machine.

BOMAP ConnectAllows Compaction Control, More Data

BOMAP Connect provides networked control and documentation of all rollers working at the job site. Capable of working with all brands of rollers, program installation is quick and intuitive.

All compaction data collected by BOMAP Connect is cloud-based, so compaction documentation can be quickly accessed from a computer or mobile device from anywhere an internet connection is available.

An operator simply activates the BOMAP app from anAndroid tablet or smartphone from a BOMAG roller, and the app connects with the machine’s interface and registers its parameters. All compaction passes are then automatically recorded.

If required by job specification, the interface can connect with BOMAG’s Joblink via Bluetooth, and in addition to roller passes, the system also records the Evib value, asphalt temperature, and vibration frequency and amplitude of the BOMAG rollers and adds the data to the documentation.

For other roller brands in the fleet connected to the networked job site, BOMAP Connect logs and transmits

the number of passes, generating a pass map for the entire site. By equipping the rollers with an optional high-precision antenna, GPS reception is maximized to further increase documentation accuracy, especially helpful when working in urban areas or in poor weather conditions.

All rolling data collected from the site are combined in real time in the cloud application and displayed as a colored map in Google Maps. The colored areas indicate where compaction has already been achieved and where it is still necessary. Compaction visualization for the entire site allows roller operators to see which areas have already been compacted, the degree of compaction and position on the tracked section.

BOMAP Connect enables all roller operators to achieve optimum compaction in the minimum number of passes. This, in turn, reduces fuel consumption, lowers operating costs and increases roller efficiency.

BOMAP Connect enhances parallel planning of different projects within BOMAP, including construction site planning.

First Oscillating Soil Compactor Rolls Off Sakai’s Ga. Line

Sakai America Inc. has just completed the first production unit of the new SV414ND model with user-selectable oscillation and vibration, which saves the need for separate machines. Prior to this, contractors have had only one brand from which to source oscillating soil compactors.

“This is a product we have been testing in the field for quite some time and are excited to finally launch,” said Brad Belvin, manager, sales and marketing. “We’ve had tremendous success with our asphalt ND line and heard no shortage of contractor requests to bring similar selectable oscillation/vibration drums to the soil side of the business.”

Oscillating soil compactors are typically used in regulated no-vibe areas due to soil type and in situations where compaction must be achieved but with reduction in felt vibrations, noise and damage to nearby structures. The SV414ND is now available to order from all Sakai U.S. and Canadian dealers.

About Sakai SV414ND

Like other “ND” designated models from Sakai, the SV414ND features oscillation and vibration capability in the same drum. Sakai oscillation is uniquely gear-driven, as opposed to belt-driven, saving equipment managers the time, hassle and expense of belt servicing, the manufacturer said.

The SV414ND is an 8-ton class 67 in. soil roller powered by a Cummins QSF 2.8 with 74 hp and is built in Adairsville, Ga.

Smart CompactAssists Operators By Determining Compaction Settings

ASSIST from page 40

Furthermore, Smart Compact fulfills the newest requirements of the current generation of drivers and new starters in the road building sector, who demand workstations equipped with cutting-edge technology.

Smart Doc

With Smart Doc, Hamm presents an Android app for compaction documentation and self-monitoring. The app can be used with the GNSS receiver on the user’s smartphone.

For day-to-day operations, however, Hamm recommends the Smart Receiver, a GNSS receiver specially designed for construction applications. With the app, users can transparently document the compaction in earthworks and in asphalt construction and share the result with third parties.

Smart Doc also meets the requirements of continuous compaction control (CCC). The app generally combines data from the machine control

system with the positioning data from the smartphone.

During the compaction process, important process parameters and the compacting progress are displayed and recorded on the end device. The “compaction maps” recorded show users at a glance where still needs to be compacted. Consequently, the system has proven itself to be a useful tool for training new drivers.

Smart Doc can be used to generate a compaction report at any time. This way, construction companies can provide evidence of high-quality compaction for earthworks with the required basic continuous compaction control. At the same time, the number of passes is optimized, since the occurrence of double passes is reduced by approximately 30 percent. This in turn reduces the diesel consumption and, ultimately, the CO2 emissions.

Currently, Smart Doc can be used and retrofitted in the H CompactLine series, the HC CompactLine series, the

H series, the HC series, the HD+ series and the HX series. Smart Doc can even be used to document double passes on other manufacturer’s machines.

The app is free and can be installed via the Google Play Store on all Android smartphones and tablets from Android 6.0. It is available in German, English, Spanish and French.

Integrating Collision Prevention Assistance System

Since the start of 2022, a PDS interface (proximity detection system) also can be used to integrate modern collision prevention solutions. The interface provides data that can be used by different systems to autonomously detect people or objects in front of and behind the machine, and to automatically stop the roller when needed.

The interface is available for rollers from the HD+ series, the HX series, the HP series, and the HC series.

WirtgenW250FiColdMillingMachine

Removes Concrete at GermanAirport

The renovation of the Leipzig/Halle Airport in Leipzig, Germany, required the complete removal of over 2 mi. of runway as well as the connecting taxiways in under 30 days. More than 385,000 tons of extremely hard concrete reinforced with rebar mats (continuously reinforced concrete pavement — CRCP) were removed in the course of the cutting process.

To complete such a large project, the contracting company used powerful machines from Wirtgen’s W 250 Fi class with special modified milling drums.

Extensive Renovation of Damaged Taxiways

It was necessary to completely remove the north-side runway due to “concrete cancer,” an alkali-silica reaction also found in older concrete-paved highways, which irreparably destroys the concrete from within.

A project of this magnitude requires high-performance machines and optimal cutting tools for the milling drum. With more than 1,000 hp, the Wirtgen W 250 Fi class always has sufficient power reserves, according to the manufacturer.

The large milling machines were equipped with additional ballast weights in order to exploit their full performance potential in the cutting process. The greater operating weight leads to greater traction of the track units and optimal cutting performance by the milling drum.

The large milling machines for the LeipzigAirport project also were fitted with ECO milling drums and special picks.

ECO milling drums have up to 50 percent fewer picks at larger tool spacings than standard milling drums.

Using fewer cutting tools reduces cutting resistance, which also makes it possible to mill harder concrete pavements.

The powerful milling fleet removed more than 385,000 tons of concrete within just 30 days. This means that each machine had to mill off an average of more than 1,212 tons of concrete a day.

The first step was to remove the concrete surface in layers as quickly as possible. Once this was done, machines with extremely precise 3D leveling technology on-board were used to create an optimal base for the subsequent resurfacing.

Concrete Milling — A Process With Widespread Applications

Concrete milling is an established technology worldwide and Wirtgen has successfully applied it in many projects. It also can remove reinforced concrete containing tie bars, dowel bars and steel mesh.

Additionally, selective removal enables the separation of concrete layers with different properties, thereby reducing contaminated material. A further benefit: In most cases, milled concrete can be recycled without any further treatment.

Minimal Carbon Footprint

Even the granulated concrete generated by the airport project in Leipzig was 100 percent reused as valuable recycled building material. After being stored temporarily near the building site, it was used in later renovation stages for the roadbed of the new runway. The short transport route and minimal need for new material left a very small carbon footprint.

On top of this, the Wirtgen cold milling machines themselves offered a broad spectrum of environmentally-friendly machine technologies. Fuel-optimized speed ranges in milling mode controlled by Wirtgen Mill Assist and enginetemperature-controlled fan speeds, for example, help protect the environment and conserve valuable resources.

Automatic activation and deactivation of the water spraying system and water metering dependent on milling performance considerably reduce water consumption.

Planning Ahead is Key to Success

To ensure a smooth process, project planning began far in advance. Practical use tests started as early as eight months before the job began. This enabled precise consumption estimates for picks and other wear parts and the procurement of sufficient replacement stock that was stored at the site, minimizing machine downtimes for pick replacement and maintenance and assuring maximum productivity.

Thus, the large-scale runway rehabilitation project at Leipzig/HalleAirport was successfully completed within the allotted timeframe, and the groundwork for this success was the timely removal of the concrete as well as the optimal milling results.

Project and Branch Manager Bernhard Fischer from Kutter, the construction company leading the project, expressed his satisfaction with its successful completion: “In contrast to milling in asphalt, the extreme hardness of this concrete meant that we had to use slower milling speeds. The wear on the milling tools was also significantly higher. The additional costs of increased wear on material were more than compensated for by the rapid progress we made and the precision of the results. The removal of the concrete by cold milling was the ideal method for this project.” 

accommodate the additional lanes and clearance will be raised to approximately 17 ft., allowing for taller trucks and loads. These efforts will modernize this important stretch of highway in North Carolina that was originally constructed in the late 1950s.

North Carolina DOT has authorized an additional project on I-95 that will bring the modernized piece to around 25 mi. The cost of the project is expected to be $692 million.

Wooten’s work will encompass the highway from exits 55 to 71, while the work from exit 71 to exit 81 is under way and in the hands of a Flatiron Construction and Fred Smith

Joint Venture, which extends just past the major intersection with I-40. This second major section is expected to be completed in 2026.

Within the S. T. Wooten section, workers will replace six interchanges with new overpasses, loops and ramps to meet today’s traffic needs. In addition, service roads will be reconfigured for safety and congestion relief.

Staging is always a challenge, especially when working on a busy interstate like I-95.

“We began by moving traffic over into a temporary traffic pattern towards the median while we were building the outside lanes,” said Ronald Brock, construction manager of S.T.

Wooten. “Now we have moved the traffic to the outside completed lanes while we finish up with the permanent inside lanes. We had to maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction at all times.” However, Wooten regularly had lane closures overnight, starting at 7 p.m., for small stretches of this highway to do some planned construction.

Due to high traffic volumes during the day workers labored at night building bridge sections over the freeway. Sometimes live traffic was rerouted to detours during these phases of construction.

The entire area is quite flat, so workers installed subsur-

In recent years, the demand among contractors for more compact construction equipment has increased dramatically in the United States, with no signs of slowing down.

As part of that market expansion, builders and machine operators also have discovered how well a line of smaller, more maneuverable rubber-track carriers can bring more efficiency to their job sites, while also combining better traction with a high load capacity.

One of the trailblazers in bringing these types of versatile equipment to market in North America is Morooka USA, a master distributor of Japan’s Morooka Co Ltd. The U.S. distributor, based in Ashland, Va., just north of Richmond, supplies its versatile machines to approximately 150 dealers across the United States and Canada.

A related company, Morooka America LLC, owned by the Japanese conglomerate, serves as the exclusive American manufacturing plant for the rubber-track carriers, and also is located in Ashland. The more than 80,000-sq.-ft. factory makes 16 Morooka products, including various-sized utility machines and rotators, as well as rubber-track carriers with HST hydraulic systems. The facility builds approximately 300 machines a year.

Morooka Finds Perfect American Partners

After Morooka had imported its machines to United States for many years, by the early 2000s, its Japanese leadership realized that distribution efforts in America were not performing to the level that they had hoped.

At the same time, a pair of brothers, Ronnie and Kenneth Byrd, were running Wakita Distribution, a construction equipment parts warehouse started in 1998 in the Richmond area.

“When we were operating Wakita, we found a niche in supplying used Yanmar equipment parts to the U.S. market, and that led us to Morooka,” said Ken Byrd. “At that time, most machines in the country were imported from Japan used, so there was an almost immediate need for parts for that equipment. Morooka was aware of our success with

Yanmar, so they asked us to distribute their products here in the U.S. as a master distributor and we signed an agreement with the company in 2003.”

In the early days of the collaboration with Morooka, Ken Byrd, now president of Morooka USA, said they slowly built the dealership network from scratch.

“It was a clean slate for us to develop the U.S market because we had no dealers in the beginning,” he said. “Between 2005 and 2009, we had the territory east of the Mississippi River and Morooka controlled everything to the west through its Portland, Ore., office.”

After Morooka Japan had reached the point where it was confident in the Byrds’ ability to build a dealer network, the overseas equipment manufacturer struck another deal with the Virginia-based company to build product close to Morooka USA’s operations. The Japanese conglomerate later decided to run the Morooka America factory itself in 2019.

Product Lines Built to Be Adaptable

During its early years as a distributor, Ken and his partners, Ronnie Byrd and Yoshi Tanaka, learned that the pipeline industry could be an excellent market for Morooka products, leading them to target and obtain their first dealers and customers from pipeline installation companies in the South.

Morooka carriers also are easily adaptable to multiple segments of the construction industry beyond pipeline work. Its machines can add cabs to the trailers, attach different rigs to the beds, or remove the beds entirely to suit any type of project.

Early on, Byrd said, Morooka USAexclusively represented Morooka’s dump carrier line, with the flatbed being the only option available to customers.

“Along the way there would be the occasional contractor who wanted to do something different with our standard machine and as long as he could mount it to a flatbed or to the back of a machine on its own platform, he could do what he wanted with his Morooka,” he said. “Our early successes at offering products that could be more versatile came about when the pipeline industry began adapting our traditional flatbeds to mount small core drilling, sandblast and welding rigs for on-site use.

“Later, in 2012, we saw a real need to make our machines more customizable when we wanted to become a player in the utility industry,” he added. “The various OEMs that we do business with today were frustrated at that time with the carrier makers that would only offer one machine, one size and one style. We took a different approach to that and, rather

than say, ‘We have one machine; it has to fit your need,’ we decided to work with these manufacturers by building custom frames and mounting options to fit what they needed. I think some of our competitors are now following our lead and trying to do the same thing.”

Now, Byrd said, Morooka products are excellent rental machines for their dealers, adding “the return on investment from the dealers’perspective has been they are about the best in their fleets, making them a very attractive addition to their equipment lineup.”

Machines Designed to Work in Challenging Environments

The middle of the Morooka product line, according to Byrd, has the maker’s current best-selling models, with carrying capacities of between 24,000 lbs. to 35,000 lbs. — what he calls “the strength of our entire line.” Among that group are the Morooka MST-1500VD rubber-track and utility carriers, and the MST-2200VD rubber-track model, all made in the Virginia facility, and noted for offering low ground pressure and perfect for working off-road in more boggy areas.

“Their undercarriages use a floating bogie system that distributes the weight of the load across the entire track and the total ground pressure,” he said.

The manufacturer also builds a rotator model, the Morooka MST-700VDR, a cutting-edge rotating dump carrier built with reliability and durability in mind. The machine has proven to be ideal for transporting loads across rough terrain and challenging environments.

Additionally, the MST-700VDR features a powerful rotating system that allows the operator to easily maneuver in tight spaces.

“The top structure rotates 360 degrees independently from the tracks so you can pull into a spot, turn the top around, dump your load, and drive out without moving the tracks and disturbing the ground further,” said Ken Byrd’s son, David, Morooka USA’s marketing manager, who also handles social media and trade show logistics for the company.

“And the MST-700VDR does provide another level of

AUSAOffersExtensiveRange of Site Dumpers in Lineup

The site dumper is a product that is becoming increasingly popular on North American job sites. General contractors are starting to see the benefits of these modern machines for the American public, as has long been the case in other markets.

On the surface, site dumpers stand out for being compact in size and having a large skip at the front, but what really makes them so popular is their operating cost efficiency, due to a combination of agility, high payloads and safety.

AUSA, a European manufacturer of compact, all-terrain industrial vehicles, has been designing, manufacturing and selling dumpers since 1961 and is currently a global leader for this type of vehicle.

The company has 20 different models of dumpers in its catalog, with payloads ranging from 2,200 lb./0.74 cu. yds. for the most compact model, up to 22,000 lb./5.1 cu. yds. for the largest one. They are all customizable with a wide variety of accessories to suit virtually any situation.

In terms of product ranges, they are split into three main categories according to their payloads: Firstly, models up to 3,300 lb./1.18 cu. yds., the smallest. These are extremely compact, ranging from 40 to 60 in. wide, depending on the dumper. This range is mainly used in jobs where maneuverability is an important factor. Some examples of applications are residential landscaping, small public works, ditch backfilling, demolitions and concrete work. Their small size also allows them to work indoors.

For larger jobs, AUSA has a mid-range category of dumpers with payloads ranging from 4,400 lb./1.7 cu. yds. to 9,900 lb./3.5 cu. yds. This category includes one of the most popular models in North America, the AUSA D350AHG, a dumper with a 7,700 lb./2.78 cu. yd. payload and a powerful 44 hp engine that allows it to handle any terrain with a gradeability of 54 percent.

The D350AHG site dumper is highly effective for civil engineering and concrete works, with a machine specifically designed for earth moving in off-road conditions. This machine also is perfect for landscaping work and there is even a version available that is equipped with turf tires, which is extremely useful for golf course builders.

At the top of the range, are dumpers with payloads up to 22,000 lb./5.1 cu. yds. for larger job sites where efficiency is a priority, along with maneuverability and machine safety. In this range, the DR601AHG model with 13,200 lb./4.1 cu. yds. is particularly impressive because it also features a reversible driving position: the seat, steering wheel, pedals and dashboard rotate 180 degrees so the driver is always driving forwards. This innovative feature maximizes the driver’s visibility, ensuring greater safety for the entire surrounding area.

This category also includes various versions that are equipped with turf tires. Safety is one of the key aspects of these site dumpers, as most of them are equipped with numerous standard features that make them top of the line vehicles in this segment. One fairly common feature is the electronic negative brake, a parking brake that is automatically engaged when the dumper’s engine is turned off to ensure it comes to a complete standstill.

They also can be equipped with full-view cameras at the front and rear of the machine to view everything that is happening in the vicinity during the operation, or even with a seat with a presence sensor or a seat belt with a buckle sensor. This prevents any unintentional movements and maximizes the safety of the entire job site. Site dumpers are here to stay in North America and more and more industries are taking advantage of their greater cost effectiveness.

safety on the job site because the operator never has to back up,” Ken Byrd added. “We were among the first manufacturers of track carriers to put cameras in them to help the operators see what they were doing.”

Speedy New Compact Carrier Being Developed

Soon, Morooka will be bringing an exciting new machine to market that David Byrd described as one that its dealers and customers have been requesting. A prototype of the new model was unveiled earlier this year at ConExpo in Las Vegas.

“The MHS1300 High Speed compact carrier has a twoman cab that customers have been asking about and wanting for years,” he said. “It also travels more than twice as fast as your standard Morooka with a top speed of about 17 mph, as opposed to 7 mph.”

The advantage of a higher speed on a rubber track carrier is simple: the ability to traverse big job sites more quickly.

“When you get out there in one of these machines and you have a mile or two to cover on a big flat job site, it gets tiring doing that repeatedly,” David Byrd added. “If, on the other hand, you can do that job two-and-a-half times quicker, you are going to be much more efficient.”

The diesel MHS1300, with a Cat-built engine, will offer a relatively small payload of about 4,000 lbs., but the simplicity of what it will be asked to do — and in a more rapid amount of time — should make it attractive to buyers and renters.

“The nice thing about Morooka is that its machines are simple,” said Ken Byrd. “They have diesel engines made by two manufacturers, Kubota, and Cat, for our U.S. models, plus they have hydraulics and undercarriages, so there is nothing unique about them from a service standpoint.”

Building Morookas Stateside Gets Them to Customers Quicker

The need to build Morooka carriers in the United States, rather than relying on imports from Japan, he said, was to have enough available inventory on hand for the North American market, particularly as the demand for compact equipment shows no signs of diminishing.

“Another advantage to having Morooka products built here rather than in Japan is that it gets them into the U.S. and Canadian dealerships more quickly,” he said. “It only takes about two weeks to build a Morooka, but if it comes from Asia, it ends up spending 30 days at sea, and the shipping cost is higher.”

David Byrd added, “Building the equipment here is also what has allowed us to dive so deeply into the utility market. We have been able to work closely with the OEMs to make changes on the fly when it comes to customization and getting it exactly right for whatever attachments are going on the back of our products.”

Key Contributors to Morooka USA’s Success

The success the Byrd family has enjoyed over the past 25 years in growing from a small parts distribution outfit into a master distributor for a Japanese equipment manufacturer,

complete with an expansive NorthAmerican dealership base and a Virginia factory, is due in large measure to two other people, as well.

“My other brother, Ronnie, is the managing member of the holding company that owns Morooka USAand Morooka Rents, a small rental outfit that supplies product to our dealers for re-rents whenever either their fleets are maxed out or they do not have a specific size available. He is actively involved in that business,” Ken Byrd said.

“Ronnie is the reason that we have any of the relationships we have with Japan. In the 1980s, he began going over there to bring in used equipment for refurbishing and resale through either an auction or dealer network in the U.S. He also had strong ties with many Japanese companies and had connections to both Morooka and Hitachi.”

In addition, a third partner to Ken and Ronnie Byrd is Yoshi Tanaka, an American citizen born in Kyoto, Japan, who came to this country when he was 20 years old.

“He is now in his seventies, but he is vital to Morooka USA because he knows the business acumen and culture of Japan,” Ken Byrd said. “He was able to make introductions and often lead us onto the correct path in many of the negotiations we had with several Japanese companies over the years, including Morooka. Mr. Tanaka has been an important part of the operations here behind the scenes and key to our discussions and open lines of communication with Morooka Japan.”

Payload Measuring System

The DA45-5 comes standard with an active payload measuring system for increased productivity and reduced cycle times. The system provides ADT operators with improved truck management and load optimization by helping to protect against extensive overloading. Operators can view each load’s weight on the LCD screen in the cab.

Driveline Updates

Customers can count on better weight distribution for extreme performance and traction in off-road conditions. Unique design features — such as the tandem housing — set the trucks apart from those of otherADT manufacturers. The DA45-5 has a front-mounted turning ring, sloping rear frame and free-swinging rear tandem bogie to ensure permanent 6wheel ground contact. The limited slip differential delivers the highest torque to the wheel, offering the best traction.

Self-Leveling Front Suspension

The hydro-gas, self-leveling front suspension system of the DA45-5 provides superior performance and greater shock absorption — which means a smoother ride and improved operator comfort especially when the machine is empty. The system includes a self-leveling feature and the

ability to change characteristics by adjusting the pressure. When it’s time to head out to another job, the machine’s less-than-12-ft. width makes it easier to transport from site to site.

Easy Serviceability, Maintenance

Key service and maintenance points, including groundlevel fuel and DEF fill, more accessible power module and a centralized maintenance panel, make required daily service checks and maintenance procedures more convenient for customers.

Common oil is used in the DA45-5 wheel hubs, tandem rear bogie and limited slip differential, and grease distribution is improved to reduce grease requirements. A dieselpowered engine heater and fuel pump are available as options. The DA45-5 articulated dump truck includes telem atics for monitoring the machine’s health, location and productivity for the life of the machine.

Interior Cab Comfort

The DA45-5 cab interior provides better ergonomics and more operator comfort, according to the manufacturer. Cab comfort features include fully automatic climate control, an air suspension seat, precise steering, enhanced visibility and low noise levels. Ergonomic con trols are at your fingertips and a soft-touch dashboard is eas ier to keep clean.

The vehicle control unit includes robust hardware, a faster processor and more input channels. The monitor displays critical information, including speed, engine rpm, machine

warnings and more — and offers bigger gauges, user-friendly graphics and the ability to display multiple camera views. Standard features include electrically adjustable mirrors and a mobile USB charger.

I-95 Project Requires 1.4 Million Tons ofAsphalt for Paving

WOOTEN from page 52

face drains to handle moisture from rain and groundwater. In addition, the construction team performed erosion control and is building sound walls to keep traffic noise to a minimum for nearby homeowners.

Wooten and its team are constructing 5ft.-tall median walls to separate the traffic in the final pattern. Workers also have built temporary accesses in the median to enable construction traffic to safely enter and exit the work zone. NCDOT has added a safety enhancement by making a tow truck available 24/7. This means car or truck breakdowns on the highway will be handled quickly and not cause backups that might impede the road-building work.

Wooten uses machines equipped with GPS monitoring to help with accuracy for earth moving and paving. In addition, the Wooten team used drones to accurately measure material stockpiles.

Asphalt Requirements

The project will require an enormous amount of asphalt for paving. Planners expect 1.4 million tons of asphalt to be needed. Wooten’s asphalt plants in Benson, Clayton and Garner are producing the material.

The new lanes will have 22 in. of stone subgrade; a base asphalt layer of 5.5 in.; 4 in. of intermediate layer; and a 3-in. layer of Superpave on top.

“We were able to put asphalt removed through milling into the base or intermediate layers of the new lanes,” said Brock. “This conserves material and saves us time in the construction.”

NC DOT planners also considered flood prevention in their work orders for Wooten. In 2020 the agency added to the project by including the replacement of a culvert under Murphy Road. A bridge near exit 55 will span Reese Creek and help prevent future flooding.

Drivers passing over the current I-95 Black River Bridge can see another flood protection move. The new Black River bridge is being built next to the current one and will be a single eight-lane structure. Motorists can see that the new bridge will be 8 to 9 ft. higher than the existing bridge. Planners hope the new bridge will be high enough to prevent flooding from hurricanes that put the bridge under water in the past.

Andrew Barksdale, spokesman of NCDOT, is pleased with progress on the I95 work. He commented that the federal

government had helped with costs to make the road more flood proof.

“The federal money helped move this project forward,” said Barksdale. “This part of the interstate was closed after one of the major hurricanes and it affected the whole East Coast. This new funding has helped us improve and modernize this historic interstate.”

NCDOT recognizes the importance of the

project not just to residents of the state but to travelers across the region.

“I-95 is the main street for the East Coast, a vital corridor for commerce, trucking and tourism,” said Barksdale “This widening has been badly needed. This new highway will ease congestion and accommodate future growth in traffic volumes, ensuring that I-95 remains a vital part of North Carolina’s transportation system.” 

Beyond experiencing supply bottlenecks, 61 percent of respondents said projects have been delayed because of labor shortages. Half said project owners canceled, postponed or scaled back jobs because of increasing costs. And, 22 percent of respondents said projects were impacted by extended completion deadlines or completion dates left up in the air.

The survey showed many construction firms are coping with or trying to overcome workforce shortages. In the past year, 81 percent have raised base pay rates; 44 percent provided incentives and bonuses; and 26 percent also improved benefits packages.

Firms are also getting more creative when it comes to recruiting workers. Sixty-three percent of survey respondents have added onlinestrategies.Strategiesinclude using social media or targeted digital advertising to better connect

Contractors also are increasing training investments to address the fact that many candidates lack the basic hard and soft skills needed to be successful.

Forty-one percent of respon-

“A career opportunity in construction should mean an opportunity to work with advanced technologyandperformsafe, meaningful work,” said Allison Scott of Autodesk. “As firms adopt more digital technologies and create stronger classroom and training pathways, we’ll begin to see a new generation enter the industry.

Workers will be “equipped with the tools and skills to tackle construction’s largest challenges,” said Scott, director of customer experience & industry advocacy at Autodesk.

This, in turn, will put more students on a path to professional and financial success and address the needs of local employers.

“Boosting funding for programs that expose students to skills in careerslikeconstructionwillsignal that there are multiple paths to success in life, and one is not better than another,” said Simonson.

AGC will continue its push for a narrowed education funding gap which they figure currently invests five times as much in encouraging a college education.

Simonson said that it will take years to rebuild the nation’s career and technical education. AGC is willing to do its part, he added.

“Combined with our other efforts to attract and retain workers, we are confident that investing in construction education will help solve worker shortages in this sector.”  CEG

Deanco Auction held a two-day, two ring sale Sept. 12 and 13 in Philadelphia, Miss.

The auction featured an extensive lineup of trucks, construction equipment, compact machines, farm tractors, attachments and other miscellaneous items.

The last DeancoAuction sale of 2023 at the Philadelphia, Miss., location will be on Nov. 15 and 16.  CEG

There’s always a nice selection of late-model and older John Deere dozers in the Philadelphia sale. Larry Harper (L) and Dwight Dear from Florence, Miss., are both retired contractors who still “dabble” in machine buying and selling.

Bidders arrived to the sale site early on the construction equipment sale day to get a better look and inspect their machines of preference.

A retired contractor who still buys and sells machines, Freddie Ball of Freddie Ball Construction, Laurel, Miss., reads over some info on a Case 750K dozer. Running a Cat 308e mini-excavator through the paces are ranchers Ricky Oglesby (in cab) and Charles Poole of Creed Ranch, Sallis, Miss. A nice selection of trucks sold on day one of the two-day sale, including a package of 2024 Peterbilts. Interested in the Bobcat excavators about to hit the auction block are Kenny Mays (in cab) and David Dunn, independent contractors based in Meridian, Miss. John Cameron (in cab) and Rush Cameron of Cameron’s Quail Preserve, Aliceville, Ala., rarely ever miss a Deanco auction in Philadelphia, Miss., and in this sale they checked over a Kubota SVL75 of interest. Multiple compact machines rolled across the ramp on day two of the sale. Test operating a John Deere 210G LC excavator is Sidney McClain of S & S Equipment, Houston, Miss.

JM Wood Conducts Its Fall Sale in Montgomery, Ala.

Another successful JM Wood auction took place Sept. 19 to 21 at the company’s headquarters in Montgomery, Ala. Trucks, heavy iron, compact machines, logging equipment, farm equipment, pickups, automobiles and much-much more rolled across the ramp and sold to the highest bidder during the three-day sale.  CEG

Checking out the big dozers in the auction lineup, including this John Deere 950K LGP, are John Waites (L) and Tyler Waites of Waites Construction, Talladega, Ala. Interested in the vast selection of articulated trucks about to be auctioned are Wes Hastings (L) and Justin Taylor of Carcel & G Construction, Hanceville, Ala. Comparing their notes on some of the many Komatsu dozers of interest are Chase Jordan (L), Hurst Construction, Oxford, Ala., and Jason Amason, independent contractor, based in Lineville, Ala. Jim McNair of McNair Excavation, Zebulon, Ga. There was a great selection of quality articulated trucks that rolled across the ramp on day two of the sale. auction are Bill Woods (L) Woods Equipment, Nashville, Tenn., and Chris Deason of Riggs CAT, Little Rock, Ark. Approximately 200 excavators were available to the highest bidder in this sale. The father-and-son team of Justin Roberts (L) and Pierce Roberts of Southworks Construction, Valdosta, Ga., look over some motorgraders for their familyowned contracting business.

IronAuction Group Holds Sale for Sox and Sons Construction

After 40 years in the grading, clearing and paving business, Sox and Sons Construction Co. Inc. commissioned Iron Auction Group to liquidate its current assets at an unreserved public auction. The auction was held Sept. 22, 2023, in Columbia, S.C., and featured 215 lots, consisting of construction equipment, trucks, trailers and all support equipment. The fleet had been meticulously maintained.

Bidders came from 24 U.S. states and four countries, including Pakistan, Mexico, Guatemala and Canada.

A few of the highlights included a 2019 Komatsu PC80 MR5; a 2018 Cat 336F excavator; a low-hour John Deere 260 skid steer; and a Cat 725 artic truck.  CEG

Jeff Hunter (L) of 4 M Iron in St. George, S.C., catches up with Michael Armstrong of Armstrong Contracting in Columbia. Sold Auction Company Holds Sale in Commerce, Ga.

Waiting for the auctioning to come their way on several pieces of equipment of interest (L-R) are Truss Garner and Tal Martin of Upstate Curb & Paving, Homer, Ga.; and Keith Whitfield of Whitfield Paving, Commerce, Ga.

For Sold Auction Company, to say it was a “Chamber of Commerce” day on Sept. 22, 2023, in Commerce, Ga., was an understatement. Perfect weather combined with a quality lineup of heavy equipment, compact machines, trucks, attachments and all kinds of other contractor and trucking firm items made for a successful sale.

Registered bidders on site were joined by online bidders from across the country, all vying for equipment and truck bargains to meet their needs. 

Bidders came early morning for the machines and stayed late for the quality lineup of trucks.

It was well worth the trip to Commerce, Ga., for a nice lineup of mid-sized and heavy equipment and trucks.

Deep in discussion on a couple of machines that just went on the auction block are Rex Hayes (L) and Jim Carr of Performance Excavating, Dawsonville, Ga.

Three contractors chatting about what they plan to bid on during the sale (L-R) are Brandon Lovin, Lovin Contracting, Robbinsville, N.C.; and Deron Shuler and Jay Shuler of J D Shuler Contracting, Flowery Branch, Ga.
