U.S. Cement Shortages Persist

Concrete Sector Continues to See Project Delays, Production Cut-Backs

The supply shortages hitting the cement and concrete sector are consistent with nationwide construction materials bottlenecks, but are more severe in certain parts of the country. The Portland CementAssociation (PCA) reports shortages in 18 states and attributes the issue to increases in global product demand and residential construction here at home.

Supply-chain issues have long plagued the construction industry, dating back to before the pandemic.

see CEMENT page 50

Increased global demand is another reason for shortages in both cement and concrete nationwide.

BeardEquipmentGrowsWithThird-GenerationOwnership

It’s been a couple of years since Beard Equipment Company celebrated its 50th anniversary, and the company continues to grow and thrive with the third-generation family members completely taking the reins of management and ownership.

The company was founded in 1970 by William B. Beard and an area contractor, who together envisioned the growth of the John Deere industrial line in Pensacola, Fla., and seized the opportunity to buy-in as the distributor of the area. Beard Equipment grew into a second location in Panama City, Fla., in 1972, and enjoyed a decade of success at these two locations before becoming the dealer in Mobile,Ala., in 1982.

With Mobile being a much larger market, the decision was made to make that branch the company’s headquarters.

Brad Beard was named president in 1990 and his father, William Beard, retired in 1993.

In a recent conversation with Construction Equipment Guide (CEG), Brad Beard recalled his father’s way of selling equipment.

“Dad never had a signed order or a P.O. number,” Beard said. “The deal was always sealed with a handshake. To this day, many of our deals continue in the same fashion.”

During this time, Beard, and his wife Melissa, worked to expand the business while investing in the training and education of their sales team and service technicians.

“We believe that our employees are the greatest asset we have,” said Beard. “They need to know the value they bring to the organization.”

The benefit to this approach was having knowledgeable employees who could discuss the best equipment options for each customer’s unique task at hand and to get them the right options for the right machine.

It was always important to develop strong customer relationships and to make Beard Equipment an easy company to do business with.

“Wewanttoserveourcustomersandtheir needs better than anyone else,” said Beard. “We want to take care of them and do the right thing, even when it hurts or is expensive [to resolve].”

Customer feedback prompted Beard Equipment to become an early rental fleet adopter and to understand the overall value that rentals deliver. From approximately a dozen machines in the early years to a fleet of more than 600 machines today, the company always strives to provide the best equipment options to its customers for sale, rent or rental purchase.

The rental division has also been a key asset in helping the company quickly react when machines are needed for the rapid cleanups often required after Gulf Coast

storms and hurricanes. One of Beard’s largest rental operations took place during the BP oil spill in 2010, when it was able to assemble and support more than 300 machines on the Alabama coast and Florida panhandle to help with the cleanup. This included onsite technicians, a constant flow of parts and “a little bit of everything” from John Deere tractors to the largest heavy industrial equipment.

Beard Equipment Golf was created as a separate division and was one of the first designated golf and turf equipment dealers for John Deere Golf equipment. To this day, it continues to be one of the top performers in this category.

About Beard Equipment — At a Glance

In 2004, a Freeport, Fla., location was constructed. Then, in 2011, Beard Equipment purchased Industrial Tractor, acquiring new locations in Jacksonville, Lake City and Palatka, Fla. In 2014, the company purchased the Tallahassee and Perry, Fla., branch locations from Flint Equipment, and then purchased the Ocala, Fla.-based Highland Tractor in 2015.

Fast forward to the third generation of ownership. In 2013, Melissa and Brad Beard passed the torch to their two daughters, Kristen and Brooke, and two sons-in-law, Drew DeLaney (president) and John Dodson (COO). Kristen and Brooke grew up in the business, and now, along with their husbands, have all been with the company for 15 to 20 years. Complemented by a topnotch management team the couples continue to run the business with the same core principles that have led to consistently be recognized as one of the top performing John Deere Dealers in NorthAmerica.

All generations agree that technology — especially the Internet — has changed the way people value equipment and research their options compared with just a couple of decades ago. Today, Beard Equipment is constantly evaluating the best way to connect with customers, add value to their business and earn a place of consideration with prospective buyers.

(L-R, seated): Third-generation ownership John and Brooke Dodson and Kristen and Drew DeLaney; and (standing) second-generation ownership Brad and Melissa Beard come together at the company’s Mobile, Ala., headquarters. Brad Beard (L) and his father William Beard, founder of Beard Equipment Company, in the 1970s. Growing from approximately 12 employees at the beginning to more than 350 today, Beard Equipment now operates 10 full-service John Deere construction & forestry facilities throughout north Florida, the Panhandle and south Alabama. Its golf division serves five states along the Gulf Coast. In addition, select locations also carry and service products from John Deere (small ag), Wirtgen Group (Wirtgen, Vögele, Hamm, Kleemann), Cemen Tech, LeeBoy, Rosco, Basic Rollers, BOMAG, NPK, Eager Beaver Trailers, Alamo Industrial, and Talbert manufacturing. Beard Technology is the Florida and south Alabama dealer of Leica Geosystems products.

Yancey Bros. Holds Round Two of Cat Operator Challenge

Round two and the final Yancey Bros. Co. 2022 Cat Global Operator Challenge was held in central Georgia on Sept.16. The venue for this challenge was the Yancey Demo and Training Center in Musella, Ga.h

The competitions were set up to the exacting specs of the four machine challenges that were held at the event hosted by Yancey at the Caterpillar manufacturing plant site in Bogart, Ga., in mid-August. As with the previous challenge event, a huge contingency of Yancey and Sitech South representatives worked for days making sure this event was absolutely flawless.

A catered BBQ lunch was served up by Bar-B-Que Monsters in nearby Perry, Ga.

The confirmed overall winner was Casey Hall, owner/president of 4H Services, Pine Mountain, Ga., who will represent Yancey in the upcoming regional finals in North Carolina.

Yancey’s Mike Leach oversees the Yancey Demo and Training Center and has to clean this mess up and compact it before the next demo session.

After this event concluded and bothYancey operator challenges were “in the books”, the contestants scores from both events were tabulated and confirmed. The overall winner was Casey Hall, owner/president of 4H Services, Pine Mountain, Ga., who will represent Yancey in the upcoming regional finals in North Carolina and the potential to advance to the Global Operator Challenge Finals at ConExpoCon/AGG 2023 in Las Vegas where Caterpillar will crown one operator as World Champion.

Austin Gilbert of Gilbert Construction, Ringgold, Ga., blazed through the compact track loader competition and gave the run a thumbs up when he finished.

Cat Certified Dealer Instructor Jamie Hoffman (L) keeps a close eye on contestant Chuck Denard (in cab) of Barnett Southern Corporation, Washington, Ga., as he makes a run at the mini-excavator challenge.

Representatives of Yancey Product Support and Yancey Hydraulic Services were out in full force to provide info on complete fleet maintenance and included (L-R) Keith Mueller, Ron Lang, Daniel Hitchcock, Bobby Duncan, Jay Mehuron, Alan Harrison, Mark Mills and Joe Smith.

Customers talking to their Yancey reps and getting ready to compete in the miniexcavator challenge (L-R) are Noah Rutherford, Yancey Rents; Duane Davis, Blake Harris and Hunter Baker of Meriwether Site Solutions, Gay, Ga.; and Lee Benefield, Yancey Bros. Co., Macon, Ga.

Complete accuracy is the key to the excavator challenge as Jeff Grindle (L) of Sitech South, Smyrna, Ga., provides final grade measurements using Trimble technology.

(L-R): Yancey’s Scott Mulkey gives a warm welcome to a group of central Georgia customers, including Allan Cook, Tim Hines and Jeremy McCormick of C&H Grading Services, Whitesburg, Ga.

Yancey’s Brian Stanfield (L) goes over a few operational tips on the new Cat 320 excavator with Andrew Nix of Simpson’s Trucking & Grading, Gainesville, Ga., before he tackles the Big Dig competition.

Yancey’s Stephen Miraglia watches for any points violations as a contestant makes a run at the Cat dozer challenge.

After

Decades,

After almost two decades of applying for grants, making plans, and waiting, Lexington, N.C., is preparing to kick off the construction phase of its passenger rail service project, the Lexington Dispatch reported Sept. 18. In 2003, the city firstbegandiscussionsaboutprovidingpassengerrailservice in Lexington, located southeast of Winston-Salem.

After being denied no less than six different federal trans portationgrantsthroughtheyears, thecitywasfinallyaward ed $24.9 million in 2020. The funds came from the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program, through the Federal RailroadAdministration (FRA), a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Aseriesofprerequisitetasks, though, hadtobecarriedout over the next two years before USDOT could release the funds in preparation for the rail project’s construction phase. Now, with Lexington and the state transportation agency (NCDOT) having completed all the prerequisites to obtain the grant, the monies are slated to be released at the end of September.

The Lexington construction effort is to include building two new boarding platforms, renovating the city’s historic freight depot as an interim passenger station, digging a vehi cletunnelundertherailroadatFifthAvenue, whichwillcon nect with Talbert Boulevard, and improving the tracks between the two areas. In addition, crews will close the atgrade rail crossing on SeventhAvenue.

The Dispatch noted that due to the current economy and increases in construction labor and materials, the rail project will cost approximately 40 percent more to build than pro jected by the 2019 budget estimates. The total estimated cost of the project is currently $57 million.

In addition to the FRAgrant, the NCDOT is contributing $10.95 million toward the project’s construction, will pro vide an added $450,000 for design work, and will hire a third-party agency to aid in the fiscal management and over sight of the federal grant.

The city of Lexington is responsible for $5 million in matchingfunds, asrequiredinthegrantapplication.Itwillbe paid over the life of the expected five-year project, the Dispatch reported.

Lexington officials told the news source that it will seek various sources for the $16 million increase in costs, includ ing North Carolina Railroad, a private corporation that owns and manages a 317-mi. rail corridor stretching from Charlotte to Morehead City. Other possible funding options are the U.S. Economic Development Association, discre tionary funds from North Carolina legislators, local corpo rate citizens, the private sector, foundations and additional grant programs. The city will cover the balance of all other funds not obtained from outside sources.

Although money will soon be available to begin the rail project, another two years will pass before actual construc tion can start as preliminary work includes right-of-way pur chases, demolition, final design, and plan review.

City officials told the Dispatch that there is an opportunity tobeginrenovationoftheoldfreightstationsitepriortocon struction of the track and grade separation work as funding becomes available prior to 2025.

N.C. Equipment Operator Moves to Next Round of Cat Global Challenge

Carolina Cat recently served as host of a unique competition among area machine operators.

To determine the best operator in the region, along with two runners-up, the full-service dealership was the site of the first round of the 2022/2023 Caterpillar Global Operator Challenge on Sept. 13-14 at Carolina Cat’s main location at 9000 Statesville Rd, on the Queen City’s north side.

The first-place winner was Alfonso Fajardo, an operator with Spartan Site Services in Gastonia, N.C. Placing second and third, respectively, were Joseph Wainwright of Charlotte’s Blythe Construction and Shaun Lackey of Shaun Lackey Excavating in Hiddenite, N.C.

Fajardo will now advance to the regional semifinal round in Raleigh in October. Following that, a total of nine finalists from around the world will compete in the finals at the ConExpo-Con/AGG event in Las Vegas in March 2023. The competition’s overall champion will be awarded an all-expenses-paid trip for two to one of Caterpillar’s facilities worldwide.

The Global Operator Challenge is designed to test the skills and precision of equipment operators by proving their excellence in operating Cat machinery along with their ability to master any piece of heavy equipment safely and efficiently.

Approximately 100 operators competed in the contest to display their prowess in running three different machines through a trio of timed challenges to advance to the next round, Carolina Cat’s Mark Kincer said during the event.

“For one, we have a Cat compact tractor loader that they must run on an obstacle course, which means staying inside the cones that are set up, going through some elevation changes, and earning bonus points by maneuvering around other obstacles,” he said.

Following that, the competitors each climbed aboard a Cat 330 hydraulic excavator to show their deft touch and the equipment’s dexterity by removing tennis balls set at different heights, as well as using one of its bucket’s teeth, painted white, to flick balls from atop a construction cone.

Finally, Kincer noted, the last challenge involved driving a Cat wheel loader equipped with a load-sensing scale that tells the operator how much weight is in the bucket at any one time. The task was to move 10 tons of stone from one pit to another in the quickest time.

During the awards ceremony afterwards, Carolina Cat also recognized each individual event winner, including Wainwright and Lackey, with commemorative plaques for their efforts.

LiuGong NAAdds Crouse Equipment to Its Dealer Lineup

LiuGong NorthAmerica welcomed Crouse Equipment as a new construction equipment dealer. The Sheridan, Ark.based dealer is centrally located within the state.

As a LiuGong construction equipment dealer, Crouse will sell both excavators and wheel loaders. Crouse Equipment President Dean Crouse has conducted due diligence over several months to gain more insight into LiuGong’s prod ucts, services and support network.

“I think it’s going to be a good move for both of us,” Crouse said. “It will let us be more diversified in different industries where we’ve struggled before.”

Crouse hailed the direct relationship in working with LiuGong’s dealer support team as one of the key reasons for the new agreement.

“They’ve been very open and forthcoming and answering any concerns or questions,” Crouse explained. “There’s a group here that is wanting to grow. They are open-minded and listen and address concerns that their dealers have. And I really think that’s the direction they’re going to be headed.”

Beard Equipment Adapts, Continues Company Growth

BEARD from page 8

“Theearlydaysdidn’tinvolvetechnology liketoday,”MelissaandBradsaid.“Youhad to stop at a pay phone to call customers back and they were often not available. They could be in the woods or on a job site. You looked up parts on a microfiche reader and there were no computers in service to help diagnose service problems. As time went by, we became more ‘computerized’ and found it was hard to do business without them.”

“The biggest change from generation to generation is the overall technology of the dealership and in the equipment itself,” said Company President Drew DeLaney.

“We’re in a more competitive market place than before with stronger competitors. We’re also looking at tougher margin equa tions, so we have to be more efficient with resources while continuing to deliver excel lent customer service. In the early days, it seemed to be more about the equipment. Now, it’s more about the way the equipment is supported.”

One of its newer divisions, Beard Technology Solutions, was created to fill the growing need for machine control and automation solutions by providing Leica Geosystems software, products and training throughout the state of Florida and south Alabama. The Leica Geosystems unit pro

vides a comprehensive suite of solutions to civil contractors from the planning and esti mating phase of a project all the way to final documentation and completion. Beard Technology also sells survey equipment and software.

Embracing new opportunities like this is one of the reasons that the company has vir tually been in constant growth mode since inception. Beard Equipment continually adds new John Deere product lines and was recently named the Wirtgen Group equip mentsupplieratsixofitsFloridalocationsto better serve the road building and asphalt industries.

Through it all, the third-generation’s lead ership of Beard Equipment has been dili gently working to achieve record sales years and to continue the business tradition of excellent customer service.

Co-owners Drew and Kristen DeLaney and John and Brooke Dodson are now fully vested and entrusted to meet the challenges of their geographic expansion, increasing competition and ever-changing customer needs. The Beard family considers it a great opportunity to be a family-owned, familyrun business, and continues to position Beard Equipment as a nationwide leader among family-owned distributors.

During the company’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the entire second, third and fourth generations made their rounds to many of the Beard locations.

BOMAG Innovation Days Showcases

Newest Road Products, Capabilities

Mauldin Helps Va.’s

Racey Paving Keep Up With Workload

BOMAG Americas Inc., a division of Fayat Group, a European-based manufacturer of several lines of road construction equipment, recently held an event at its Ridgeway, S.C., headquarters and factory to highlight its latest products to contractors and dealers.

The BOMAG Innovation Days demonstration introduced the equipment maker’s latest technologies as well as the capabilities of its new equipment in what BOMAG Global President Ralf Junker calls a “real life” jobsite setting.

By allowing more than 150 of its construction customers from across the United States and Canada to see its machines working up close, rather than in immovable displays at trade shows, BOMAG officials believe people can better see and understand what the products can do.

Among the equipment for building professionals to inspect at the BOMAG event, north of Columbia, were its compaction, milling, paving and reclaiming/stabilizing machines for roadbuilding and other construction projects.

“Today, we are introducing a number of new innovations,” Junker said, adding that upgrades were made to its compaction line’s newest small tamper, the BT 50, and a modern design has been applied to its light rollers. “From there, we have our new baby, the high-end BM 2000/65 large planer, BOMAG’s largest milling machine and already a best seller launched a half-year ago.”

Customer Feedback

Valuable to BOMAG

After having held BOMAG Innovation Days events in Europe and Asia for years, the company began to hold the same events in the United States, a source of pride for the company.

Junker and other BOMAG executives stage these events to better understand the needs and goals of its customers, and it has always worked to lead the industry in groundbreaking new developments, he said.

A meet-and-greet reception opened BOMAG’s Innovation Days, followed the next day by what Junker called “more theoretical training” of the equipment, and an informative tour of both the parts warehouse and the product assembly line. Later, many of the manufacturer’s diverse set of road-building machines were put to work for the assembled contractors.

Brannon Racey is a young man working as superintendent at his family’s paving company in the lush Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He also is preparing to one day soon assume the mantle of company owner from his father, Wayne, who has trained the younger Racey for the job since he could first walk.

One of Brannon’s attributes is his intense desire to know all he can about the paving and excavating business, the two primary services offered by Racey Paving in Toms Brook, Va., the site of both its office and shop.

When the small contracting firm saw that it was time to buy a new grader to handle the many residential projects it books throughout the western part of Virginia, Brannon spent a lot of time doing research to find the right grader for the company.

Eventually, his efforts led Racey Paving to purchase a new Mauldin M415XT maintainer, a highly versatile and maneuverable small grader. He also turned to Richmond Machinery in the Commonwealth’s capital city for help in making the deal to buy the Mauldin grader.

In addition, a static equipment exposition at the factory allows customers to meet with and ask questions of BOMAG’s product managers and marketing personnel.

“People tell us quite precisely what they are demanding and looking for,” said Junker. “We need to meet our customers to exchange ideas and be close to them to know what they need to be happy with our products. Their feedback is really a huge value for all of us in our work.”

To end each BOMAG Innovation Days gathering, BOMAG entertained its guests with a demonstration of the power of its compaction equipment, he said.

“People really enjoy seeing how easy it is to destroy up to four cars at the same time with one of our 60-ton compactors,” Junker said, laughing.  CEG

By allowing several dozen of its construction customers from across the United States and Canada to see its machines working up close, rather than in immovable displays at trade shows, BOMAG officials believe people can better see and understand what the products can do.

“People really enjoy seeing how easy it is to destroy up to four cars at the same time with one of our 60-ton compactors,” said BOMAG Global President Ralf Junker.

Richmond Machinery Paves Way for Racey’s New Maudlin M415XT Grader

RACEY from page 33

The contractor took delivery of the new maintainer on Aug. 8, 2022, where it has joined Racey Paving’s menagerie of other equipment in its yard, including two pavers, two rollers, a wheel loader, three mini-excavators and a trio of skid steers. Along with the Mauldin, Richmond Machinery also brought a skid steer bucket that Brannon needed to replace, he said.

Racey Did His Homework

The Mauldin M414XT is an improved version of one the contractor bought in 2002, before selling it in 2015 after working it hard, Brannon said.

This fact was the main reason Racey Paving decided, once again, to choose this Mauldin model, he added.

“Knowing what we had before, and the fact that we liked the maintainer’s size, style and most everything else about it, I decided, as a research kind of person who likes to dig in and look up information before I even call anybody, to start looking into the M415XT to check out what improvements have been made to it over the years,” he said. “Plus, I read the reviews that people wrote about the revamped maintainer and how good it was.”

Brannon called the dealership to begin the process of buying one. Although Richmond Machinery did not have that maintainer in its showroom at the time, he said that “as soon as they got one, they called me to come down to have a look at it. We already knew what the upgrades were on the Mauldin, so we went to Richmond, checked it out, ran it in their yard a bit and made our decision to take it home.”

Because approximately 80 percent of Racey Paving’s projects involve residential paving and small excavation, Brannon saw the small Mauldin M415XT as the perfect choice for his company.

“A full-size grader is usually too large to get into smaller driveways and is often just too hard to get around at home sites,” he said. “That model is classified as being more of a maintainer than a grader. The difference between the two is that a motor grader has multiple pivot points up front and is made for shaving back banks and for cutting ditches, plus they have the weight to support what they do. A maintainer is made to lightly clean out ditches, re-grade roads and built for lighter work than a regular road grader.”

Paving Fixture in Valley

Racey Paving was founded in 1965 by Brannon’s greatgrandfather and grandfather. Later, Wayne Racey came into the family business, meaning his son Brannon is the fourth generation of the Racey family working in the respected company.

The contractor plies its trade up and down the valley, with most of its workload being in its home base of Shenandoah County. Additionally, Racey Paving takes on projects in the surrounding counties of Warren, Frederick and Page.

Paving CompanyÊs Work Is Non-Stop

Brannon said the amount of work he and his crew have is so heavy that they have no need to advertise.

“Well, our trucks have our name on them, but the bulk of our business comes from positive returns or referrals from satisfied customers,” he said. “Sometimes we get work from random people that get on Facebook to find someone to do the paving they need. More than 50 percent of the folks we work for will recommend Racey Paving over anyone else.”

Racey Paving’s non-residential projects include parking lots, commercial sealcoating and performing maintenance on the roadways at most of the area’s subdivisions.

Racey Paving Takes Delivery of Mauldin M415XT Grader

from page

One of Racey Paving’s long-standing clients has been the Shenandoah County Public School (SCPS) system, which Brannon said has been ongoing for 25 years and involves repairing and repaving parking areas as well as doing snow removal at the schools

“[SCPS] often waits a long time to get their parking lots fixed, due to its budget, but this past year they got a lot of government funding to help improve their schools,” he said. “We just spent the entire month of June overlaying and sealcoating 10 different parking lots for them. That was a substantial job for us outside of the residential work we normally do. It took place on five different campuses, ranging from elementary to middle to high schools. There are three of each in the county, and the [Massanutten Regional Governor’s School in Mt. Jackson].”

For the younger Racey, the amount of work the company has been asked to do is incredible, especially considering the current economic climate.

“We have been so blessed,” he said. “Last year, for instance, we had to stop taking calls for work at one point because we became booked up for the rest of the year in July. This year, we fully maxed out at the end of May. We have 60-some estimates right now that we just have not been able to get to and our office has told people how busy we are. Yet, they will say, ‘That’s alright, we’re willing to wait until next spring.’

“That fact says a lot about the way we are looked at as a company.”

Wirtgen’sKMA240(i)ColdMixingPlantMakesWorldDebut

Cold recycling technologies from Wirtgen are in use around the globe for climate-friendly and cost-effective recycling of construction materials. The new mobile KMA240(i) cold mixing plant now makes on-site production of highquality mixes even more efficient.

In addition to bituminous bound mixes, the plant also is a cost-effective solution for the production of cement-treated mixes.

The recyclers of the WR series are used in recycling and soil stabilization projects. The new resource efficiency system increases the degree of automation in the overall process, which, in turn, further increases efficiency. Furthermore, the new VARIO injection bar for binding agents offers the ability to regulate the injection pressure of water and bitumen in order to achieve more homogeneous distribution in the mixing chamber.

KMA 240(i) With Double Trough System

The new KMA 240(i) mobile cold recycling mixing plant from Wirtgen enables continuous and resource-efficient production of high-quality mixes. The innovative double trough technology makes it possible to double the speed of the production of mix from various different construction materials, according to the manufacturer. The system enables precise, reliable and automatic addition of large amounts of hydraulic binding agents. As a result of this, the mix production process achieves the highest levels of efficiency and quality.

In addition to cold mixes for bituminous bound base layers, the plant also can produce mixes for cementstabilized base layers (CTB) and roller compacted concrete (RCC) at rates of up to 240 t/h. These construction materials are integrated in the road construction cycle as high-quality mixes. They can be used for applications ranging from motorway, road and path construction to the construction of car parks or industrial areas

The KMA 240(i) can process an enormous variety

of non-cohesive base materials. The newly developed double trough system with automatic self-calibration and precision weighing enables the constant addition of binding agents during the continuous mixing process. Depending on requirements, either small or large amounts of binding agents can be added in the process.

Milled RAP or other granular material from old road surface layers and other materials from RC processing can be used as environmentally friendly construction materials.

The 100 percent recycling rate enables substantial CO2 reductions and energy savings, while simultaneously minimizing project costs and timeframes. The cold recycling mixing plant is mounted on a low-loader semi-trailer and has its own high-performance engine unit. This mobile concept enables fast and flexible redeployment of the plant to an enormous variety of different working locations.

Resource Efficiency System for WR series

The resource efficiency system combines an automatic

steering system and digital project site documentation in a single app that makes a significant contribution to the costeffectiveness and resource-efficiency of soil stabilization and recycling operations.

The satellite-based guidance system enables precise and efficient completion of the successive project tasks. It steers the machine with a precision measured in centimeters on the basis of a previously calculated reference cut and a predefined overlap of adjacent cuts. At the same time, all relevant location-specific parameters are registered to provide a comprehensive database for site analysis and documentation purposes.

In the case of soil stabilizers, these are, for instance, working width and depth, distance and area worked, fuel consumption and many other parameters. The forward-looking system is also scalable, which means that other machines such as motor graders, rollers and compactors involved in the process also can benefit from the data.

VARIO Injection Bar for WR Series

In order to achieve consistently high quality of the mixing results, the addition of water and binding agents is regulated according to various parameters such as the working width and depth, the material density and the machine advance rate. Each injection bar has a maximum of 16 nozzles, each of which can be activated or deactivated at any time to vary the spraying width.

The premiere of another innovation in the WR series — the VARIO injection bar for water, bitumen emulsion and foamed bitumen. The adjustable nozzle crosssection enables the regulation of the injection pressure and, in turn, the depth the spray jet penetrates into the milled granulate. The result is an even more even distribution of water, bitumen emulsion, or foamed bitumen throughout the entire mixing chamber, according to the manufacturer.

PCA Reports Cement Shortages Affecting 18 States

But the concrete market in particular has been hit hard as a result of several factors.

Today, cement mix is in short supply creating problems reported in areas such as northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio

Some contractors are estimating double the cost of completing projects while others report delays in scheduling that mean the loss of state funding.

No Signs of Letting Up

According to a report by wpta21.com the shortage is causing backups for contractors relying on concrete mixers to make the concrete.

The mixers are limited in how much product they can supply for lack of ingredients.

“The concrete shortage is showing no signs of letting up anytime soon,” reported the Indiana television station.

That situation is causing continued delays for both major local construction projects and home improvements.

In Evanston, Ill., Kelvin Co. owners Paul and Kimberly Boynton report that increasing demand for concrete, coupled with the supply chain issues, have affected their business.

They told Evanston RoundTable that a local IUOE strike this summer slowed down work all over the Chicago area, including their customer territory.

A built-up demand for concrete on priority highway projects has hit an already-sluggish supply chain and forced suppliers to cut production.

Kelvin’s concrete supplier Ozinga served notice it had to close plants on Saturdays.

By late summer, the plant had started taking fewer orders and limited the amount of concrete customers could order.

“We need to pump the brakes in order not to put ourselves in a position of running out of material mid-pour,” Justin Ozinga said.

Companies in the Louisville, Ky., area were struggling to get enough cement this summer.

Ron Hartman, vice president of sales of Ernst Concrete, told wdrb.com that the Louisville area was facing challenges in acquiring the material.

“Cement is the one thing you’ve got to have to make concrete,” said Hartman, vice president of sales. “There’s only so much of it being made right now, and the current demand is pushing supply to its limits.”

He said though the situation was serious, Ernst was not hit as hard as other companies.

“In our area, the issue is mainly due to one of the cement suppliers having a breakdown,” he reported back in May. “It’s caused issues with the people that were buying directly from them.”

Ernst is in a situation “where our suppliers are able to keep up with their commitments to us, which has allowed us to keep up with our commitments to our customers,” said Hartman.

He said his company has been able to keep up with demand but has been put on allocation. Patience is key.

“You may not get what you want when you want, but you are going to get it,” he said. “And that is the main thing right now. Just be patient, work with us and everybody in the industry. All the other producers are doing their best to work with everyone else.”

But other contractors expressed frustration in simply lining up jobs.

“It’s so hard to schedule jobs because we can’t get con-

crete,” said Miguel Hernandez, referring to residential pours.

“Not much we can do without a foundation, that’s for sure,” Billy Doelker, owner of Key Homes, told wdrb. “We’re being told there’s a cement shortage. Some concrete suppliers seem to be having more issues with it than others.”

He said historically, contractors could call today and get cement delivered the next day.

This summer, local contractors were having to schedule delivers five and six days out at a time.

Doelker said he was told to expect the situation to remain for the rest of 2022, but the local industry is hopeful things will turn around before then.

“This isn’t going to last forever,” Hartman said. “Hopefully, it is short-term, and everybody’s doing their best to get everything going again.”

In Woodfield, Ohio,Amy Zwick, county engineer, met with commissioners in early September to discuss delays in a county road project because of higher material and fuel costs.

The timesleaderonline.com reported that among bids received for the project was one set at 55 percent above the original estimate due to cost increases in fuel, asphalt and cement.

She said three stabilization projects were subject to delays because of the shortage.

“The biggest driving factor we think is cement shortage,” said Zwick. “So, cement producers are prioritizing readymix plants and any cement they are able to produce and ship are going to ready-mix plants first.”

As a result of the bid amount and the lack of funds to cover it, the county road project was not awarded.

Nationwide Problem

This summer, it was predicted that cement shortages would delay road projects nationwide.

“Traditionally, concrete is fairly easy to line up on a project,” said Kyle Althoff, director of construction of Quality Concrete, Fargo, N.D.

But the traditionally easy-to-schedule task has been difficult this entire construction season.

“Cancel pours, move them back, the schedule just kind of keeps walking in the wrong direction,” he told inforum.com, and the delays are affecting projects.

The delays are what they are, said Dave Grausam, vice president of Kost Materials, who expects concrete paving projects along I-29 to take longer to complete.

Grausam admitted that the company is “burning” through its backup cement supplies this summer, and said he fully expects slow-downs. “It will get done, but there will be delays.”

He expects the cement shortage to start improving a little less than a year from now.

The PCA identified 18 states experiencing a short supply of cement, necessary to make concrete.

The shortages are forcing builders to scramble to be keep projects on schedule.

Edward Sullivan, vice president of economic research of the PCA said that the shortages are being felt “from Massachusetts to Florida with the exception of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.”

The widening swatch stretches as far west as the Mississippi River, “touching Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana,” he added. “California and Nevada are also affected.”

Sullivan said in a Builder.com article all this must be looked at in the context of a strong economy.

“We assume the supply-chain improvement will be sticky. There are so many factors in place that that improvement will be relatively slow.”

He believes product demand will likely improve, “which implies inventories will remain lean.”

A built-up demand for concrete on highway projects, which take priority in certain regions, has hit an already-sluggish supply chain and forced suppliers to cut cement production. Contractors can significantly reduce costs and speed up their project timelines by trying innovative construction techniques, such as prefab construction.

Volvo Starts Testing of First Prototype Hydrogen Hauler

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) continues acting on its commitment to drive change towards a net-zero future.

Following the completion of a multi-stakeholder research project aimed at breaking new ground in hydrogen technology, the company has started testing of the world’s first fuel cell articulated hauler prototype, the Volvo HX04. The results of the project will provide important insights into the possibilities provided by hydrogen and fuel cells as Volvo CE continues research for its future product development programs.

Acting on its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitment of net-zero value chain greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, and driving industry transformation towards carbon neutrality, Volvo CE has accelerated its work into sustainable power sources.

Besides battery-electric solutions, where Volvo CE is already offering the largest range of commercial products, the company’s efforts also include exploring the potential of electrification through hydrogen fuel cell technology. Now, an important milestone has been reached with the testing of a world-first emission free hydrogen fuel cell articulated hauler prototype, the Volvo HX04.

Carolina Diez Ferrer, head of advanced engineering programs at Volvo CE, said: “Being inventors of the world’s first articulated hauler more than 55 years ago, we are happy and proud to again drive change with this fuel cell hauler concept. While an early prototype, this innovation will give valuable insights into the opportunities of hydrogen in the energy transformation alongside battery-electric solutions. We believe that by exploring multiple technologies and

working in partnership we can create the best path forward to decarbonize the construction industry.”

Driving Change Through Partnerships

The Volvo HX04 is the result of a research project running between 2018 and 2022, with funding from FFI, a national collaboration between the Swedish InnovationAgency VINNOVA, Swedish Energy Agency and Swedish Transport Administration, to support sustainable vehicle strategic research, innovation and development. Partners include Volvo CE, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, who provided specialist competence on driveline development and safety, and PowerCell Sweden, a developer of fuel cell-based hydrogen-electric power solutions.

The development and building of the six-wheel prototype has largely been carried out at Volvo CE’s facility in Braås, Sweden — the same location where Gravel Charlie, the world’s first articulated hauler, was born back in 1966, giving the Volvo HX04 the nickname “Electric Charlie”.

Engineers at the Technology Center in Eskilstuna, Sweden, have contributed with software development and knowledge gathered through its fuel cell test lab. While not commercially available, valuable insights from the concept will inevitably inform future production, the company said.

Hydrogen Refueling Station

Infrastructure for hydrogen is still in development, which means refueling the Volvo HX04 is an important aspect to solve in the project. Shell installed a hydrogen refueling station at the Volvo CE test track in Braås. Both Shell and Volvo Group are founding members of H2Accelerate, a collabora-

tion of companies working to foster conditions for the mass market roll-out of hydrogen trucks in Europe.

Oliver Bishop, Shell’s general manager of hydrogen mobility, said: “Providing the fueling infrastructure for this innovative project gave Shell the opportunity to demonstrate our technical capabilities in hydrogen and enabled us to support one of our key global collaboration partners in taking another step forward in their decarbonization journey, which goes to the heart and intent of Shell’s Powering Progress strategy.”

How It Works

The fueling process for hydrogen vehicles is fast — the Volvo HX04 is charged with 12 kg hydrogen in circa 7,5 minutes, enabling it to operate for approximately four hours. Fuel cells work by combining hydrogen with oxygen and the resulting chemical reaction produces electricity which powers the machine. In the process, fuel cells also produce heat that can be used for heating of the cab. Fuel cells only emit one thing — water vapor.

In principle, a fuel cell works much like a battery except that it generates its own electricity from the hydrogen onboard as needed rather than being charged from an external source. Vehicles with fuel cell electric powertrains have an uptime, range and fueling time similar to that of combustion engine powered vehicles.

While battery-electric vehicles and biofuels are commercially available today — as more sustainable alternatives to diesel — commercialization of hydrogen-powered machines is expected during the second half of this decade.

AUSA’s Reversible Dumpers Sport Hill Holder System

AUSA’s DR601AHG and DR1001AHG reversible dumpers have a 13,200 and 22,000 lb. payload, respectively, and comfortable hydrostatic transmission.

These compact earthmoving machines are mainly used in the construction sector, where their maneuverability and quick moves allows the operator to complete the job faster than with other traditional machinery, according to the manufacturer.

The design of the reversible driving position of these AUSA dumpers allows the seat to rotate 180 degrees and all components are instantly adjusted to suit the driver’s new position: steering wheel, joystick, pedals, safety cameras and other features. That means the operator can always drive forwards, which is an important increase in the safety and helps to reduce the machine maneuvers.

In terms of technology, various systems have been included to make them more efficient dumpers: they have the ECO Mode function, where the engine speed is automatically controlled to ensure lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

They are fitted with the Hill Holder system, a start-assist and safety system that engages the dumper’s brake when you take your foot off the accelerator at zero speed. This significantly increases safety, especially when operating on slopes.

They also can be equipped with Smart Stop: a plug-in system that automatically shuts down the engine when it is not in use and the optimal time and safety requirements are met.

The new DR601AHG and DR1001AHG dumpers are equipped with a powerful 74.3 hp Deutz engine that complies with the Tier IV emissions standards and have an

engine torque of 340@1500 on the 6-tonne capacity and 405@1300 on the 10-tonne.

In regards to the emissions, these reversible dumpers fit a new generation DPF with an automatic regeneration system. Even if the machine is only used a few hours a week, the system starts up by itself without having to do anything, the manufacturer said.

According to the estimated use of the machines, 95 percent of the time the operator will not have to carry out any type of action, the manufacturer said.

Finally, these models are available with a large number of accessories and finishes, including a ROPS/FOPS closed cab, which is easily removable for transport.

Hyundai CE Enters Articulated Dump Truck Market

Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas announced it is entering the articulated dump truck market with two new models — the HA30 and HA45 articulated dump trucks — targeting the popular 30- and 45-ton segments.

The first of the new ADTs are now available for order through Hyundai’s North American network of authorized dealers.

With rated payloads of 28 and 41 tons respectively, the HA30 and HA45 articulated dump trucks provide an ideal haul truck match for Hyundai’s larger crawler excavators and wheeled loaders. Designed primarily for high-volume earthmoving projects, highway construction, and mine and quarry operations, Hyundai’s articulated haulers provide maximum drive and traction in the worst site conditions, maintaining year-round productivity for the customer.

“Hyundai is excited to enter the ADT market to better serve our customers in aggregates and infrastructure construction,” said Mike Ross, senior VP of CE Sales, Parts & Service, Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas.

“Our new ADT models are the first collaborative results of the combined design, engineering and manufacturing expertise of Hyundai Construction Equipment and Hyundai Doosan Infracore.”

Hyundai Heavy Industries Group in 2021 purchased the Doosan business, which now operates — along with Hyundai Construction Equipment — as a separate division within Hyundai Genuine. While maintaining their respective management and dealer network structures, the two divisions plan further integration in R&D, design, engineering, procurement and manufacturing.

Articulated Hauling

The new Hyundai HA30 and HA45 trucks are built around a full-time six-wheel drive concept, with front and rear limited slip differentials and a longitudinal differential that can be manually locked, for maximum drive and traction on difficult terrain.

The trucks have a compact chassis design, to aid maneu-

verability, with a sloping rear frame and a front-mounted differential integrated into the ZF transmission, allowing for a shorter front frame section. This results in the smallest turning radius in the vehicle class and outstanding stability, according to the manufacturer.

Self-leveling hydro-gas suspension on the front axle further supports a comfortable ride, delivering maximum tractability in tough ground conditions.

The turning ring is mounted in front of the chassis articulation point, resulting in an equal weight distribution to the front wheels in all driving situations, for increased stability and traction.

Tandem reduction gearboxes on the two rear axles enable maximum oscillation of the rear axles to maintain ground contact on rough terrain. The single central differential increases ground clearance beneath the truck.

Oil-cooled wet disc brakes achieve an extended service lifetime of up to 15,000 hours. A hydraulically activated mechanical parking brake holds the machine when stationary.

The trucks are supplied with a gradient meter, with flipover protection and a Body Over Center of Gravity function, to assist drivers when dumping and operating on rough terrain.

The HA30 has a 22 cu. yd. heaped body capacity, that rises to 23.3 cu. yd. when fitted with a tailgate. The larger HA45 offers a 32 cu. yd. heaped capacity, rising to 34 cu. yd. with a tailgate. Both dump bodies can be optionally heated by the engine exhaust gases to prevent freezing and sticking of materials when operating in colder temperatures.

Internal wear plates are available as an option when working in applications with heavy and hard rock.

Proven Powertrain

Tier IV Final Scania diesel engines power both trucks. The HA30 uses a five-cylinder, 9.3-L DC9 turbocharged diesel, producing 375 hp and 1,876 Nm of torque. The larger HA45 uses a six-cylinder, 12.7-L DC13 diesel engine, pro-

ducing a maximum 500 hp and 2,476 Nm of torque.

Both engines drive through eight-speed ZF automatic transmissions. The torque converter has lock-up in all gears, reducing fuel consumption and increasing efficiency. Ground level service points are designed for maximum efficiency and improved safety.

The engine canopy tilts forward for access to filters and fill points, while the complete cab structure also can be tilted towards the rear of the truck, to provide access for repair and maintenance.

Hyundai’s Hi-Mate telematic monitoring system is standard, with satellite and GSM connectivity, to reach the most inaccessible construction and mining sites across the world. This enables remote monitoring of productivity, fuel consumption, system warning and maintenance status, reducing unplanned downtime and improving fleet utilization.

Comfort, Protection

With the most spacious ROPS/FOPS cab on the market, the Hyundai ADT features an ergonomic layout to the controls, a high-quality air-suspended operator’s seat, an internal sound level of just 72dB(A), MP3 and Bluetooth-compatible radio, USB charger, all-round safety rails and a footrest. Interior cab storage includes room for an optional cool/hot box and 12V power sockets for operator phones and other accessories. Full cab climate control is standard on both models for maximum comfort throughout the working day.

A comprehensive monitor panel provides an integrated payload meter to prevent overloading and to record productivity. Diagnostic functions are included within the monitoring system, and the operator can remotely check hydraulic and transmission oil levels from the cab.

A gradient meter ensures that the truck is driven safely within its limits, while an integrated rearview camera and large mirrors provide excellent all-round visibility when reversing under an excavator or into the dumping area.

Komatsu’s HD1500-8E0 Haul Truck

Is Built for Performance On Grade

Delivering performance with a 1,580 gross hp (1180 kW), Tier IV final Komatsu SDA16V159E-3 engine, the HD1500-8E0 helps drive high levels of productivity.

Does your operation need an efficient 150 ton haulage solution that can deliver performance on grade while providing energy-saving technologies to help achieve lower fuel consumption? Komatsu’s rigid frame off-highway haul truck, the HD1500-8E0, is purpose-built for mining, quarry and aggregate applications.

Delivering performance with a 1,580 gross horsepower (1180 kW), Tier IV final Komatsu SDA16V159E-3 engine, the HD1500-8E0 helps drive high levels of productivity. The redesigned cab, combined with a MacPherson strut-type and hydropneumatic suspension, gives operators the smooth and comfortable ride they need for long shifts.

Quick Specs of HD1500-8E0

• Net horsepower: 1,570 hp (1,171 kW) @ 1,900 rpm

• Operating weight: 550,229 lbs. (249,579 kg)

• Rated payload: 153.2 tons (139.0 t)

• Rated Capacity (SAE Heaped 2:1): 102 cu. yd. (78 cu m)

Travel Performance for Productivity

In addition to speed on grade, the HD1500-8E0 is equipped with hydraulic, wet multiple-disc brakes on all four corners. The continuously cooled, large-capacity brakes also act as a highly responsive retarder, providing operators with confidence at higher speeds when traveling downhill. Downhill descent also can be controlled by setting a desired travel speed with the automatic retard speed control (ARSC), which applies the brake retarder to maintain the desired setting and descend the road with confidence.

Maneuverability for Tight Spaces, Steep Grades, Slippery Haul Road Conditions

With a tight turning radius (36 ft. 9 in.), operators in the HD1500-8E0 can easily maneuver in and out of tight spaces when spotting to be loaded or positioning to dump. The MacPherson strut-type independent front suspension features an A-arm wheel-to-mainframe design for wide spacing and easy access to the engine bay.

Komatsu’s traction control system (KTCS) provides enhanced control in loose or slippery haul road conditions by monitoring the rear wheels for slippage and automatically applying pressure to the independent wheel brake assemblies.

Technology That Promotes Enhanced Productivity

The HD1500-8E0 has a 7-speed, fully automatic trans-

mission with two configurable reverse speeds. Komatsu’s advanced transmission with optimum modulation control system (K-ATOMiCS) provides electronic shift control with automatic clutch modulation, promoting optimized clutch engagement at every gear to provide smooth shifting without losing torque, offering a comfortable ride while helping to reduce material spillage.

Enhance payloads, promote productivity and control the life cycle costs of your truck with the HD1500-8E0‘s integrated payload meter (PLM). It manages the payload of each hauling cycle, analyzing production volume and the working conditions of the machine.

Operator Comfort, Visibility

Designed with a convenient control layout, the ergonomic operator cab is equipped with an air suspension seat to help dampen vibrations. Seat heater and ventilator are equipped as standard. To help improve operator comfort, hydropneumatic suspension provides a smooth ride over rough terrain, while the low noise engine, fan clutch and cab sealing provide a quiet, low decibel operating environment.

Give your operator greater visibility to the work-area with features like KomVision, a 360-degree monitoring system that uses six cameras for a real-time view of surroundings. Two screen mode allows your operator to view the 360degree bird’s eye view and any of the six cameras to be viewed simultaneously, on a dedicated monitor.

Maintenance Made Easier

Designed for convenient preventative maintenance and servicing, a ground-level service center is located at the bottom of the HD1500-8E0‘s hydraulic tank, putting engine, transmission, brake control and hydraulic oil filling evacuation ports accessible in one central location. The standard, automatic greasing system helps minimize maintenance time by automatically supplying grease at predetermined intervals. A battery disconnect switch, located on the left side of the vehicle, is accessible from the ground level. For security during maintenance, there are tie-off anchor points for safety harnesses.

The cold weather package includes electric heating elements for engine oil pan, coolant, steering and hoist oil tank, transmission oil pan and brake oil tank, which plugs into an external power supply. The engine also is equipped with a cold weather ether starting aid system, standard for the HD1500-8E0.

Crews Cut Through Mountains for Corridor Q Project

CORRIDOR from page 1

through mountains and relocating the dirt and rock into support for the new highway. Corridor Q will provide a safer two-lane highway with truck climbing lanes. Workers will use large-scale equipment to move more than 15 million cu. yds. of material in just three years on a 2-mi. construction segment, Poplar Creek Phase B.

Corridor Q also has challenged engineers, field workers and planners alike as they built the tallest bridge in the state (Route 460 Connector Phase 1), will soon build the second tallest bridge in the state (Poplar Creek Phase B), built the deepest segmented, precast box culvert (Poplar Creek Phase A) in Virginia and will construct the deepest earth cut in the state (Poplar Creek Phase B).

This massive endeavor is composed of several smaller jobs, each of which would be a significant project on its own. The estimated cost for the entire 14.2-mi. project will be around $750 million.

• Route 460 Connector Phase I (approximately 1 mi.). Opened to traffic November 2020. Included construction of the tallest bridge in Virginia. Cost: $121 million.

• Route 460 Connector Phase II (approximately 6 mi.).

Rough grade completed. Paved road will be open for traffic in late 2023. Cost: $194 million.

• Hawks Nest/Intersection (approximately 2 mi.). Rough grade completed. Paved road will be open for traffic in late 2023. Cost: $13 million.

• Poplar Creek Phase A (approximately 3 mi.). Construction under way. Completion expected in late 2024. Cost: $200 million.

• Poplar Creek Phase B (approximately 2 mi.). Includes a bridge over railroad/Levisa River, which will be the second tallest in Virginia. Completion date is mid-2027. Cost $220 million.

Marty Halloway, VDOT Bristol District Mega-Projects engineer, leads a team from various locations to coordinate these efforts.

“The current roads in this region are mountainous, twolane roads,” said Halloway. “Corridor Q will be safer with a significant reduction in travel time.”

Blasting and drilling were vital to produce the deepest cut

The current roads in this region are mountainous, two-lane roads. Constructing these final segments of Corridor Q in Virginia will provide a safer alternative and will reduce travel time.

in the state, nearly 500 ft. deep.

“The Poplar Creek Phase A cut was the deepest cut, but only one of many necessary for this project,” said Halloway. “Our contractor used large-scale equipment to move enormous amounts of material more quickly than would have been possible in the past. Work teams also used onsite material to create the embankments and fill.”

The Corridor Q project required huge amounts of building materials including 35,000 tons of asphalt. Some 16,000 cu. yds. of concrete were necessary for just the Phase 1 bridge. An onsite concrete batch plant was used for the bridge. Workers planned to finish the pavement with a 6-in. base mix and 1.5-in. asphalt concrete pavement 12.5D surface. The roads will have 13-ft.-wide shoulders.

Tallest, Deepest

The Phase 1 bridge, the tallest in Virginia, was built over Grassy Creek.

“The bridge construction topped out at 250 feet above the creek,” said Halloway.

The bridge was built of twin 1,700-ft.-long cast-in-place segmental bridges, each with a deck width of 43 ft., carrying two lanes of traffic in each direction.

Workers will take on another daunting challenge with the Poplar Creek Phase B project. When constructed, this will be the second-tallest bridge in the state at 150 ft. tall, just over 1,000 ft. long and containing a 338-ft. span.

Deep ravines created another problem for designers and workers. Stream impacts required some original thinking. The team solved the problem by building the longest segmented pre-cast box culvert in the state on the Poplar Creek Phase A project. The culvert needed to withstand 310 ft. of embankment fill on top of it and still be able to carry water to the proper channel.

“There was no template to use for designing such a culvert with that kind of stress and strain present,” said Halloway. “Our team studied the various factors that would be on the culvert and made sure to design it properly. At one point we undercut an additional 25 feet of material to reach bedrock to make sure the culvert would be properly supported. Then,

This massive endeavor is composed of several smaller jobs, each of which would be significant projects on their own. The length of the entire project will be 14.2 mi.

Corridor Q (Route 460) will provide residents with better access to healthcare, improved travel times and increased interstate commerce opportunities.

Blasting, Drilling Produces Nearly 500-Ft. Deep Cut

we put the temporarily relocated stream back into the box. We calculated that it would be sufficient to convey a 100year flood, even while partially obstructed.”

Not only did the team manage challenging geography, but communication was unique as the team was spread out from Maryland to Virginia and from Kentucky to Illinois.

“We had to rely on virtual collaboration and do much of the work virtually before and during the pandemic,” said Halloway.

In addition, the teams had to contend with labor issues and

supply chain challenges that are common in today’s construction environment.

“We also had environmental challenges, utility schedules and permitting issues to work around.”

Halloway is looking forward to the day when motorists will be able to use the new road in its entirety.

“In the end, I believe travel will be faster and safer. Travel will be much easier locally and to other states.”

Equipment

On average, the contractors use 120 pieces of equipment on the Poplar Creek Phase A construction project at any

given time. The Intersection Hawks Nest paving project has approximately 35 pieces of equipment. This includes everything from pickup trucks to large, off-road equipment.

Three Mid-Atlantic StatesAppear Spared From Shortage

Right now, though, “about 43 percent of the major areas of U.S. consumption are under shortage conditions,” Sullivan said. “Each one of the areas impacted has shown an increase in demand or a heavy reliance on imports.”

Ongoing supply issues have builders exploring alternative strategies, including ordering early.

“We are having to order concrete 16 to 18 days in advance, when two to three days is typical,” said Tony Fitzgerald, vice president of purchasing of Morrison Homes. “And concrete block orders have to be made eight days in advance of need.”

Fitzgerald is working to establish a new foreign supply for his concrete suppliers.

“The material is available, it is a matter of obtaining the ships,” he said.

Running an End Around

Tool and equipment app developer OneKey suggests taking a proactive approach to navigate the supply-chain crisis.

“These tactics may not eliminate supply issues, but they can limit the blast radius of setbacks, delays and shortages.”

Consider Prefab

Traditional onsite construction methods have established processes and systems throughout the industry, but delays and price surges have plagued the conventional building approach.

“Contractors can significantly reduce costs and speed up their project timelines by trying innovative construction techniques, like offsite construction,” said One-Key.

Prefabricated construction methods in which project components are mass-produced, assembled and transported to the building site, offer immense potential for the current situation.

The process maximizes the use of materials by minimizing waste and reducing prices.

Offsite assembly, especially for mass-produced components, is quick and streamlined without the delays caused by inclement weather.

Positive real-world results from prefabricated construction indicate that contractors could offer lower prices and faster turnaround times by utilizing prefab construction.

This is especially beneficial when used in conjunction with tools like building information modeling.

Order Early

Many contractors have already begun adapting by placing orders months in advance.

Planning for one- to six-month delays can end up saving trouble in the long run because it allows contractors to create more reliable schedules, and it also makes additional delays less likely.

These advance orders may help suppliers plan accordingly, which could help the supply chain catch up down the road.

Be Transparent

It is crucial for contractors in today’s construction industry to be straightforward about delays and setbacks due to supply-chain issues.

They need to be honest about how long a project will realistically take when offering estimates to potential clients, even if it is longer than they would prefer.

The reality is that virtually all construction projects are experiencing significant delays right now

Clients will ultimately be more satisfied when something is completed on time, even if that timeline is longer than usual.

Offering a client a realistic project timeline will dodge the need to have challeng-

ing conversations down the road when delays do inevitably occur, said One-Key.

“In fact, the No. 1 cause of construction project delays is a lack of upfront planning, which includes predicting likely obstacles such as supply chain delays.”

Contractors may need to brush up on their project planning skills in addition to communicating with clients about project expectations.

Similarly, it can be helpful to anticipate materials becoming unavailable during a project.

Working with clients to choose alternatives ahead of time can help prevent additional delays.

Consider Alternatives

Green building techniques have become more popular over recent years, but they are more valuable today than ever.

Contractors may want to consider appealing to nontraditional demographics to address the labor shortage.

Shifting recruiting strategies to cater to these groups could help attract more people to the industry’s many rewarding roles.

Some 35,000 tons of asphalt will be used for Corridor Q.

At the heart of every JM Wood sale, these ladies work extremely long days to ensure everything goes perfectly. (L-R, standing) are Kathy Raines, Kim Wood Cox, Jan Beckwith, Julie Belisle and Becky Baggett (kneeling).

Selective Inc.’s 2022 Cat 325 garnered much attention.

Jan Beckwith’s 80th birthday coincided with the auction. Beckwith has worked with JM Wood Auction for more than 40 years and is known to everyone who comes to bid.

JM Wood Auction Holds Four Days of Sales in Montgomery, Decatur,Ala.

JM Wood recently hosted four full days of auctioning inAlabama: Sept. 20 to 22 in Montgomery and Sept. 23 in Decatur.

Featured sellers included Alabama Power Company; Brasfield and Gorrie; CW Roberts; Flint Equipment; H & H Oilfield Services; Mid Star Timber; Sea Byrd Construction; Selective Inc.; Sparks Energy; Strack Inc.; Wiregrass Construction; Wright Bros. and more than 300 other sellers.

Gross sales were more than $91,000,000, making it the largest third quarter September auction in the company’s 49 years.Atotal of 3,251 machines and trucks were sold over the four days. More than 67 percent of the bids received were online.

“Customers who are looking to retire or conduct job completion auctions have been attracted to the ability to sell their equipment from their location and blend them into our already scheduled massive quarterly auction events,” said Bryant Wood.

The winning bid was $720,000 for this 2018 Cat 627K.

Sparks Energy sold 150 machines and trucks from its Decatur yard, including this 2021 Volvo A25G.

“Sparks Energy sold 150 machines and trucks from their Decatur yard as the featured seller on the fourth day of this event. We already have all the online buyers preapproved and sitting there ready to bid. A stand-alone auction could never get the kind of attention we are able to get for our sellers by combining these auctions.”

Next up will be Oct. 28 for The Alabama Department of Transportation in Montgomery, Ala., and Dec. 6 to 7 to wrap up the company’s year.

A Cat D4 was sold for $295,000. County-owned Cat graders are always a staple at a JM Wood auction. Cody Folsom, and Peter and Jay Durrence, all of Glennville, Ga., look over some Deere 650K dozers of interest. Howard Sheppard had a fleet of trucks ready for the auction block. These county-owned Cat 938M’s are looking for new homes.
