Sandvik Chooses Cat HVO Engines to Reduce CO2 Emissions
The Cat C-Series engines supplied to Sandvik Mobile Crushers and Screeners to power its mining and construction equipment can run on renewable and alternative fuels including hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) certified to EN15940 or ASTM D975.
Caterpillar’s long-standing commitment to sustainability and support for customers during the energy transition to a lower-carbon future means its industrial engines have for many years been capable of running on a range of renewable and alternative fuels*.
The Cat C-Series engines supplied to Sandvik Mobile Crushers and Screeners to power its mining and construction equipment can run on renewable and alternative fuels including hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) certified to EN15940 or ASTM D975.
Sandvik has successfully completed testing on its range of machines to confirm that they can operate with HVO without modifications to either the engines or the fuel tanks. This helps Sandvik and its customers to reduce the net carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by up to 90 percent compared with conventional diesel, according to the company.
Collaboration With Cat Dealer Finning UK, Ireland
Sandvik is a commercial and industrial equipment supplier, providing leading solutions for the mining, quarrying and construction industries. The company supplies large volumes of mobile crushing and screening equipment that can contribute to CO2 emissions when using traditional diesel fuel.
To make the shift towards a more sustainable business, Sandvik Mobiles decided to invest in HVO as a renewable fuel and turned to Cat dealer Finning UK and Ireland to supply compatible engines.
HVO is a form of renewable synthetic diesel, produced from certified waste fats and oils through hydro-processing. Its performance is similar to regular diesel, but it reduces the carbon footprint associated with operating the engine and can lower nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) under certain conditions.
Its chemical similarity to diesel means that the machine’s power output and uptime are not compromised when introducing HVO as an alternative, and it also can be blended with diesel, the manufacturer said.
Supporting Customer’s
Energy Transition
Requirements
“We are focused on developing our products and services to help our customers transition to a lowcarbon economy and fulfill our company’s purpose to help build and power a better and more sustainable world,” said Steve Ferguson, vice president Caterpillar Industrial Power Systems.
“Our Cat dealer Finning offered its expertise throughout the project, sharing its extensive knowledge on engines and fuels to provide Sandvik with all the information it needed,” said Ferguson. “Our Cat C-Series engines give customers the flexibility to use HVO as both a replacement and addition to their conventional diesel fuel, depending on their requirements.”
Sustainability Solutions
Jesper Persson, vice president of Life Cycle Services at Sandvik Mobiles added, “We are committed to using engineering and innovation through all our operations to make the shift towards more sustainable business. With a host of innovations in the pipeline, including electrification of our offering, we are excited to be pioneers in the industry and invest in renewable fuel sources and sustainable rock processing solutions.
“Working alongside Finning to performance engineer the feasibility of HVO means we can data collect and monitor any impact on the performance and output of both new and existing machinery. It’s an exciting step in our contribution to sustainability and we will work together with our customers and suppliers for more productive, safer and innovative solutions.” *Fuels must meet the specifications and characteristics described on cat.com in order to be used in Cat engines and reduce the risk of downtime.

TOMRA’s New eBook Makes Case for Robotic Sorting

Today, robotic technology is rapidly evolving in the recycling industry, especially with optical sorting equipment.
Drawing from deep datasets, optical sorters using different ejection methods process material fractions more efficiently and with higher purity rates than at any other time. But what exactly constitutes a robot in the recycling industry and how do these machines leverage the deep learning subset of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to benefit today’s recycling facilities?
“Recycling Robots, Take Two,” the latest eBook from TOMRA Recycling, a global leader in sensor-based sorting, explains the similarities and differences between optical sorters with valve block and robotic arm ejectors and details how, when implemented as part of the holistic system design, both can be used complementary to improve plant sorting performance.
It describes what is at the heart of AI, how everyone experiences it every day and opens the reader’s mind to recognize the term “robot sorter” is not just a machine with sorting arms.
Readers also learn the four critical components shared by all optical sorters, what different sorting technologies are available for the recycler’s toolbox, and software’s role in sorting.
Processing software, in particular, is critical to the sorting process, and it should be developed specifically for the type of sorting technology employed, so the recycler can maximize material recovery.
The eBook concludes with the message that, while not new to the recycling industry, the use of AI and deep datasets is expanding, which is helping to increase material processing speed, achieve higher recovery rates of the most complex material fractions, and maximize circularity by bringing more high-quality recyclates into the loop. Together, optical sorters — both with valve block as well as robotic arm ejectors — allow the workforce to be used more efficiently to lower overall operating costs for the recycler. To be most effective, however, these sorters must be positioned in the line as part of a holistic approach to the automated circuit.

Terex Materials Processing (MP), a global leader in aggregate, environmental, concrete, lifting and handling machinery, has acquired the assets of ZenRobotics Ltd., a company that designs and creates robots that pick, sort and recycle waste material.
ZenRobotics is a global leader in smart robotic recycling. Its robots, powered by proprietary AI software, make recycling more efficient, accurate and profitable. The company’s ambition is to make the circular economy a reality by turning global waste into clean raw materials.
ZenRobotics, based in Helsinki, Finland, will retain its name and become a Terex brand, with the unit reporting to Tony Devlin, who leads the Terex MP environmental businesses.
ZenRobotics was started in 2007 by creating a completely new market for robotic waste sorting. Today, it continues to automate the waste industry.
With ZenRobotics technology, operators can upgrade their recycling infrastructure to meet modern requirements and lead the way towards a more efficient, circular future.
In 2009, ZenRobotics pioneered the use of AI-based robots to the waste-sorting process. This led the team to open opportunities by introducing the first ZenRobotics Recycler in Helsinki. Since that time, it has become a global operation, marketing multiple recyclers around the world including expansion into China and the U.S. market in 2016.
In 2015, ZenRobotics launched the Heavy Picker, the world’s strongest waste sorting robot for bulky Construction and Demolition (C&D) type waste.
ZenRobotics’ goal is to help its customers extract higher value out of waste, get more actionable data and reach ambitious circular economy targets. Terex is already active within global waste markets through Terex Ecotec, Terex CBI, Terex Fuchs and Terex Recycling.
Zen Robotics will add to the Terex portfolio in global waste, where it will continue to be operated as a stand-alone business while also benefiting from MP’s broader market presence and from efficiencies enabled by MP’s global scale. This acquisition of a highly “green-focused” company further supports MP’s commitment to its environmental business and Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) goals.
Over 15 years of industry-defining product development have enabled ZenRobotics to create industry-pioneering technology. The Heavy Picker is a multipurpose waste sorting robot for bulky material. Equipped with sturdy arms, various sensors and artificial intelligence, it provides a simple, unstaffed sorting process and makes waste sorting more accurate, safe, and profitable.
The Fast Picker is a high-speed waste sorting robot for maximizing material recovery. It is compactly designed for easy integration to existing processes and conveyors in material recovery facilities (MRFs), and it increases profits by enabling fully automated sorting and higher output purity. And finally, the company launched the ZenBrain, which is artificial intelligence for sorting robots with advanced recognition ability and autonomous decision-making. This technology provides actionable data and a steep learning curve in optimizing waste sorting efficiency. “ZenRobotics is an exciting, modern company that lends itself perfectly to our pre-existing environmental expertise, and their ethos of making a circular economy more possible aligns perfectly with our goals and targets for the future of Terex MP," Devlin said.
Zen Robotics will add to the Terex portfolio in global waste, where it will continue to be operated as a stand-alone business while also benefiting from MP’s broader market presence and from efficiencies enabled by MP’s global scale.
"We’re excited to see the many ways that we can apply this technology and what potential this acquisition can bring Terex MP with the application of this technology. The journey that we’re about to begin with ZenRobotics and Terex MP is one that we look forward to starting, and we extend a warm welcome our new colleagues into the Terex MP team.” Jarmo Ruohonen, CEO of ZenRobotics, said, “We at ZenRobotics are delighted to be welcomed into the Terex MP team and we look forward to sharing our knowledge.
