Now, such tests typically do not attract many onlookers, but this demonstration was meant to showcase a collaborative new approach to beam design and optimization.

The efficient and economical software and manufacturing process proved so novel that the university, through its Technology Ventures office, later filed a provisional patent.

Although there are undoubtedly similar testing facilities closer to Boston, where Ismail lives and is a doctoral student at arguably the best research university in the world, he came to UA to crush his beam for two reasons: Emily Baker and Edmund Harriss. Baker is both an Arkansas graduate and a current assistant professor in the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design, while Harriss is a clinical assistant professor in math in the university’s Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.

“I am deeply interested in exploring and innovating new ways of making physical objects and buildings,” Baker explained.Assuch, making Harriss’ sculpture a reality posed a fun challenge for her. She ultimately created a jig, or clamping setup, to allow flat sections to be successfully attached, or “zipped,” into curving steel forms. This method, paired with Harriss’ computational formulations, became the basis for their Zip-Form construction system, producing highly accurate 3D curves with simplified fabrication techniques.

see RESEARCH page 60

The man responsible for the beam’s design was Mohamed Ismail, a Ph.D. student in building technology at MIT — a discipline existing at the intersection of architecture and engineering. He was on hand to witness the crushing test in person and seemed vaguely nervous that the beam might not perform as expected — a feeling heightened by the unusual degree of attention the stress test was receiving.

UA System Creates Formwork for Test Beam

While the Zip-Form system was clearly innovative and could produce pleasing structures, Baker and Harriss knew there were more practical applications.

This is important for reasons of both sustainability and economy, Ismail noted, as he has his eye on the developing world, where urban growth is expected to surge.

Harriss, whose primary work is in geometry, also holds an appointment in the School of Art. His stated desire is “to put mathematics in a playful, choice-driven space where people can play with or appreciate mathematics through art and sculpture.”Whenhe needed someone who could help fabricate the shapes he was dreaming up, using complex geometry, he reached out to Baker for help.

The fruits of research are not always immediately clear, but the nature of the test — hydraulic press versus concrete beam — brought out the various colleges’ social media staff, who recognized strong visual content when they saw it, according to a recent news article on the UA website.

Goal Is to Become More Efficient With Less Among Ismail’s research interests is increasing the structural efficiency of building materials. In the case of concrete beams, that means minimizing the amount of concrete and steel used, including removing concrete from where it is not needed, and retaining it where it is. This resulted in his beam having a flat top but a base that curved in unanticipated ways.He estimated that the beam in question contained 40 percent less embodied carbon — the amount of carbon burned to produce the concrete and steel used in the beam — than standard rectangular beams.

Together, they have been working on what they have dubbed the “Zip-Form” system. It arose out of an art project Harriss created through the Honors College, which ultimately became the 12-ft.-tall Curvahedra sculpture outside UA’s Gearhart Hall — a spherical structure composed of a few curving steel strands.

Photo courtesy of the University of Arkansas website

Designed to carry 8,500 lbs., the beam eventually cracked after 12,000 lbs. of load were added. Photo courtesy of the University of Arkansas website (L-R) are Mohamed Ismail, Emily Baker and Bette Poblete at the U of A Civil Engineering Research and Education Center.

Bette Poblete, a graduate research assistant in civil engineering at UA who was conducting the stress test, noted it was one of the more interesting beam shapes she had encountered.“Ordinarily, we test rectangular beams,” she said. “There are a couple reasons we do this: it simplifies some of our calculations and makes the construction more straightforward. In terms of calculations, we rely on the geometric dimensions to help predict the strength of the beams. Before we test any member, we calculate the predicted load at which it will fail. Then, we’ll compare our predicted loads to the actual loads. Since we use simpler shapes ordinarily, it makes the entire process easier.”

In terms of testing Ismail’s beam, Poblete added, “This beam was longer than we usually test, so getting it into our load frame posed a fun challenge. We ended up using our crane and forklift simultaneously to place it on our supports. Also, since the beam was trapezoidal at the ends, we had to be especially careful not to chip the corners.”

“You’re looking at places where there’s going to be a need for high density construction,” he explained. “So that means going up, going vertical and doing it safely. And, really, the only material that’s widely available and accessible to most of those regions is concrete, so concrete’s expected to be the number one material we use today. And it’s expected to just go up in use because we really haven’t found [any other] material that’s able to meet demands and still be safe.”

Unique Geometric Shaping Techniques

On a recent July day, representatives from the University of Arkansas (UA) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) gathered at the Harvell Civil Engineering Research and Education Center on the UA campus in Fayetteville to conduct a stress test on a concrete beam.

Crown Paving Applies Final Touches to Tenn.’s Southall Resort

In the bucolic rolling hills of Middle Tennessee lies a 325acre development that uniquely combines a luxury resort and spa with a working farm. Southall is located on the southside of Franklin, easily accessible from Nashville to the north but far enough from the big city bustle to give its guests plenty of peace and quiet during their stay. Although not yet open, the resort will offer 62 guestrooms and suites, 16 separate cottages, the spa, a signature restaurant and culinary program, and a wealth of farm, wellness and adventure activities. After its construction is completed, officials at Southall are targeting the resort to open later this fall.

In the areas to be paved at Southall, Blackburn said that her people are installing base stone, BM binder, 411-E surface mix, extruded curbing, shoulder stone and doing the finalTostriping.elaborate on how those processes are applied, she explained by saying, “We construct the roadways and parking lots starting with the base stone, then add a binder course in the middle to create structural stability and top it out with surface course. The curb is added to the parking lots for the landscape islands, and the striping is called out for all the parking stalls.

Southall’s entire site is being developed at one time, according to Blackburn.

In all, she noted that three different crews were needed to get the job done. “I attribute all Crown Paving’s success at Southall to a top-notch project manager and very skilled crews,” she said.

Crown Paving to Do Final Work at Southall

For the Southall project, Crown Paving came on site in August 2021 as a subcontractor to Franklin’s Old Hillsboro Building Company, the prime contractor.

“So, Crown Paving can really shine because we are performing almost all of our new construction services,” she said. “Our contract amount for the Southall project is in the range of $1.5 million to $1.8 million.”

One contractor that is helping to put the finishing touches on Southall is Crown Paving, based in Greenbrier, Tenn., and recognized as one of the region’s most respected contracting firms.Inbusiness since March 2015, Crown Paving’s majority owner and chief manager from day one has been Jessica Blackburn. It has since grown to employ more than 40 people today, she said. For the Southall project, Crown Paving came on site in August 2021 as a subcontractor to Franklin’s Old Hillsboro Building Company, the prime contractor, to perform all the paving work at the resort. “The roadways we are paving lead to the cottages, inn, an event center, a lake and some orchards, among other features spread over the entire acreage at Southall,” Blackburn said. In addition, Crown Paving’s excellent reputation helped her snare the large project, although the presence of COVID19 ended up delaying her company’s work at the development.“[Southall] is a large project for us,” she said. “We had not worked for Old Hillsboro before, but they reached out to us based on a referral and it’s been a really successful partnership.”Blackburn described a typical paving crew at Southall as numbering 10 people, along with another four-person basestone crew and five more folks handling the concrete work.

“Between all Crown’s work scopes, it will take about eight mobilizations to finish. We have been able to complete all the paving and concrete curbs without interruption for any of the other trades to access their jobs. This was a big priority for the general contractor and owners to ensure there was always access and trade work being performed. We are well versed, though, at keeping businesses open and accessible during paving.”

Thompson Machinery Supplies Crown With Equipment Almost all the equipment owned and used by Crown Almost all the equipment owned and used by Crown Paving is manufactured by Caterpillar, and the contractor’s local dealer is Thompson Machinery, a certified Cat dealer in Nashville.

At the conclusion of Crown Paving’s time at the huge Franklin development, Blackburn added, Southall will be substantially complete. “The surface course of asphalt is one of the last trades to be finished,” she said. “The customer wants to have a nice and clean blacktop parking lot and roadway to welcome their guests and patrons.”

TVA President Jeff Lyash explained to the Associated Press that smaller nuclear reactors, such as the GE-Hitachi BWRX-300 being studied by the agency, can be built more cost effectively and offer more flexibility than the earlier generation of nuclear plants. He added that while TVA is pursuing a range of energy options for its future, he thinks the small modular reactors will be needed to help TVA achieve its long-term goal of being carbon-free by 2050 while still supporting reliable and relatively low-cost power.

Considering a “new nuclear generation,” the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) wants to move forward with plans to construct smaller nuclear reactors to help the federal utility achieve a long-time goal of being carbon-free by 2050.

TVA has pledged by 2035 to shutter the last of the 59 coal units that it once ran to help reduce its carbon emissions, and aid in President Biden’s appeal to decarbonize America’s electricity grid.

The U.S. Department of Energy, which runs the Oak Ridge National Laboratory near the Clinch River site, is partnering in some of the research on the project and has so far reimbursed TVA $29 million.

When work is completed, roadway safety is expected to improve, travel times are expected to be more reliable, and this route will be able to better serve its role as one of the main hurricane evacuation routes for the greater Tampa Bay region.Construction is scheduled to begin in 2023.Last year, Lane won an $85 million contract for an adjacent project along the I-275 Corridor from the I-4/I-275 Interchange to north of Hillsborough Avenue. Currently under construction, this project will enhance safety and traffic operations, add general use capacity, provide sound barriers and integrate opportunities for transit.

Under the agreement between TVA and GE-Hitachi, Lyash said his agency will be able to plan and apply for “a preliminary licensing for the potential deployment of an SMR (small modular reactor)” at CRNS in eastern Tennessee. In addition, the accord, he said, “will provide additional information to analyze the viability of SMRs in the [Tennessee River] Valley.”

Construction Permit Process Under Way

“Additional expenditures will be determined based on future project development,” TVA said in its latest financial filing. 

TVA Wants to Build Small Modular Nuclear Reactors in Tenn.

Earlier in August, the agency announced that it had an agreement with a nuclear manufacturer to pursue a small modular reactor design at the Clinch River Nuclear Site (CRNS) near Oak Ridge, Tenn. In addition, TVA said it will spend the next year preparing a construction permit to build a couple of the 300-megawatt reactors.

Lane Construction Strengthens Presence in Fla. With $223M Contract

Environmental groups question TVA’s latest pursuit of more nuclear power, noting that most of the 17 reactors that the agency first proposed to build more than 50 years ago were scrapped due to cost overruns or other problems.

The utility recently announced it is seeking proposals for up to 5,000 megawatts of carbon-free power in one of the biggest such requests for the clean generation anywhere in the“Butcountry.Ithink to meet the increased demand we expect in electricity, and to do so in a reliable, resilient, cost-effective and clean manner, we need to consider new nuclear generation,” he explained. He added that TVA is targeting the fourth quarter of 2023 or the first quarter of 2024 to send an application for a construction permit for the smaller reactor design, which could be built as soon as 2030.

TVA is currently pursuing a two-step licensing process to go ahead with an application to NRC for a construction permit to build the new units, and then later obtain an operating permit to run them, the AP noted. The commission would have up to two years to review and decide on the construction permit application. Lyash said the Oak Ridge project should serve as a model for other small modular reactors that TVA might also build on former coal power plant sites or the abandoned Bellefonte nuclear plant site in Alabama.

Lane Construction photo Lane Construction has won another contract in Florida, valued at $223 million, to improve the safety and operations of the I-275/I-4 Downtown Interchange in Tampa.

Both projects are key to the surrounding innovation district known for its growing healthcare and economic center. They provide interstate access to I-75 and I-4, tourist destinations and employment centers, as well as access to the University of South Florida, providing more efficient mobility of people and goods through the Tampa Bay area and the entire state. Lane’s portfolio of sustainable mobility and water management projects currently under way in the state are shaping more livable communities and healthier ecosystems due to key infrastructure. Ongoing projects include the Wekiva Parkway in Seminole County; the Poinciana Parkway in Osceola County; and Suncoast Parkway in Hernando and Citrus Counties; and the Caloosahatchee West Basin Storage Reservoir in LaBelle, an Everglades restoration project. For more information, visit www.laneconstruct.com. 

The decision comes almost 40 years after TVA abandoned the construction of more than half of the nuclear plants it once planned to build.

Now, Lyash said TVA is pursuing a new and diverse generation portfolio to ensure a reliable and resilient power system, and he is eager to explore and expand solar generation, battery storage, pumped hydro generation, advanced hydrogen technologies and other carbon-free power production.

Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, and an opponent of TVA’s efforts, told the AP in a recent interview that the federal utility already gets more than 40 percent of its power from nuclear units, but it trails behind most of its neighbors in the share of solar and wind generation used to produce electricity. In the second quarter of this year, Smith noted 21 percent of TVA’s power came from natural gas-fired plants, and the agency is proposing to build more gas plants to replace some of the coal-fired generation it is shutting down.

The project adds to the company’s more than $1 billion worth of active work in Florida, a key market for the company. The $223 million design-build project will improve the safety and operational efficiency of this major interchange, which serves nearly 200,000 drivers each day. The improvements will enhance driver safety with higher volume ramps, improved roadway geometry, dedicated local exit ramps and updated signage. Community involvement is key to FDOT’s plan and has resulted in several enhancements including noise barrier walls, tree and vegetation preservation, replacement of greenspaces, walking trails and many aesthetic treatments to make this facility more visually appealing to the historic community it intersects. The project also will feature new technology at crosswalk locations to promote pedestrian safety.

TVA was the first utility to obtain an early site permit to build up to 800 megawatts of nuclear power generation from small modular reactors at its CRNS in Oak Ridge.

The Lane Construction Corporation, the U.S. subsidiary of Webuild Group, has been awarded a highway construction project by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to improve the safety and operations of the I-275/I-4 Downtown Interchange (DTI) in Tampa.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) voted 3-1 in 2019 to issue TVA a 20-year site permit for the 935acre site as an acceptable location for the Knoxville, Tenn.based utility to potentially construct and operate small modular reactors.

The AP reported that TVA’s latest move is part of a plan adopted by its board in February allocating up to $200 million to explore and develop the GE Hitachi BWRX-300 reactor design. The reactor model is one of more than two dozen small designs under development.

TVA is the nation’s third largest nuclear power operator, with seven reactors at its Sequoyah, Watts Bar and Browns Ferry nuclear plants. Ten other reactors TVA proposed were never built even though more than $10 billion was spent to doStephenso.

TVA Regards Nuclear as One of Several Reliable Power Sources

TVA recently showed that it has spent $98 million to study small modular reactors, including the early site permit application for the CRNS.

Volvo CE Solid Performance in Second Quarter

Volvo CE has maintained its strong position on the market — while taking action to build a more sustainable construc tion equipment offering for today and tomorrow. It has enjoyed a solid performance for the last quarter, despite lower deliveries, down by 27 percent, due primarily to the market decline in China. Net order intake also has declined by 42 percent in the last quarter as a consequence of this drop in China and a natural outcome from the high order intake experienced during the same quarter 2021. However, the downturn in China has been well compen sated by growth in the rest of the world. In Q2, 2022, total net sales were flat at SEK 25,814 M (SEK 25,839 M in Q2, 2021) — remaining steady due to market variations which saw sales greatly increase in North America (28 percent) and South America (121 percent) but drop slightly in the larger markets of Europe (-2 percent) and Asia (-24 percent). While service sales continued to rise, enjoying an increase of 5 per cent, net sales of machines declined by 11 percent.

Melker Jernberg, president of Volvo CE, said, “Thanks to the hard work of our colleagues and supply chain partners, we are enjoying a confident performance with solid sales on a par with last year. “With our dedication to expanding our electromobility offering and taking action to place more sustainable con struction solutions into the hands of our customers, we not only remain strong in the face of an unpredictable global out look but are geared for growth.”

Moderate fluctuations across different regions have seen sales remain flat for Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) in the second quarter of this year — resulting in a solid performance during challenging market conditions.

The quarter also marked an important event for Volvo CE with the return of its flagship Volvo Days in Eskilstuna, Sweden, for the first time in four years. more information, visit volvoce.com.

For

Market Development Construction activity in most markets has remained on good levels, driven by both the commercial sector and the ongoing investments in infrastructure. While the Chinese market declined due to lower economic activity and pricing pressures, Asia outside of China instead saw strong growth in key markets supported by government stimulus and high commodity prices. There is a continued need to renew and expand an aging infrastructure in many countries across the world, with the South American market remaining on a favorable trend with demand for commodities on a high level.

Case Launches Minotaur DL550 Compact Dozer Loader

“With both Case and the local Case dealer monitoring machine performance, we’re able to be proactive and anticipate potential equipment needs to maximize uptime,” said Jacobsmeyer. “The goal of these advances is rooted in customer need for maximum uptime, and the Case Minotaur DL550 compact dozer loader delivers that — including the ability to remotely diagnose machine events and drastically shorten response times when service is needed.”

It’s also the foundation from which Case has made the collaborative fleet management and remote diagnostics of compact equipment a reality. This enhanced connectivity allows the machine owner to share — with permission — real-time machine information with their Case dealer and the Case Uptime Center in Racine, Wis.

Case Universal Machine Control provides universal harnesses and brackets to integrate machine control solutions from any of the big three providers of precision construction solutions — Leica Geosystems, Topcon and Trimble. This allows equipment owners to add the machine to their fleet with the confidence it can be integrated directly into preferred/existing machine control ecosystems. It also provides rental fleets the ability to easily switch between machine control brands, which allows for excellent rental flexibility based on customer preference.

The industry-exclusive, fully integrated rear ripper is easily controlled from within the cab — it comes standard with three shanks and can be expanded to five shanks for more aggressive ripping. The rear ripper feature must be selected when ordering as it cannot be added after the time of purchase.“The Case Minotaur DL550 is built like a dozer with the full control and operator experience of a larger machine,” said Jacobsmeyer. “That includes the ability to deploy a full range of 2D and 3D machine control solutions that turn this machine into a compact fine grading solution that can get into areas and job sites where it’s not practical to bring in a full-sized dozer.”

In its loader configuration, the Case Minotaur DL550 features a 5,500-lb. rated operating capacity (50 percent of tipping load) with 12,907 lb. of breakout force. It features a vertical lift pattern and operates in the ISO control pattern. It also features advanced electro-hydraulic control capabilities where operators can easily dial in total machine responsiveness to low, moderate or aggressive; or independently set tilt, lift and drive speed, as well as loader arm and drive control to best meet the demands of the work.

True Dozer Performance in Compact Footprint Built on a dozer-style undercarriage and pushing with more than 25,000 lbs. of drawbar pull, the Case Minotaur DL550 delivers true dozing power and performance. The machine is available with three different track options to meet operator preference and jobsite profiles: • 14-in. single-grouser steel tracks • 18-in. triple-grouser steel tracks • 17.7-in. rubber tracks The 90- or 96-in. six-way blade connected to the integrated C-frame is the same blade featured on the Case 650M dozer and gives the operator a full range of dozer controls and movements. The machine’s electro-hydraulic controls also deliver responsiveness like full-sized Case dozers, with the ability to adjust blade, steering and shuttle sensitivity to smooth, moderate or aggressive to meet the operator’s preference.Blade responsiveness can be further dialed in to operator preference by independently setting the speed of the blade tilt, lift and angle.

Case achieves these remote service capabilities through the Case SiteManager App (iOS and Android). This app pairs the operator’s phone or device to the machine to enable remote analysis by a certified Case technician, which allows them to diagnose the health of each connected machine through various parameter readings and fault

The hallmark advancement of the Case Minotaur DL550 is the chassisintegrated C-frame with six-way dozer blade. The C-frame hydraulically couples into both the chassis of the machine, as well as the attachment coupler.

see MINOTAUR page 66

Case Construction Equipment is launching an all-new, industry-first equipment category with the introduction of the Case Minotaur DL550 compact dozer loader. Weighing in at more than 18,000 lbs. and working with 114 hp, the new first-of-its-kind machine delivers true dozing and grading performance, as well as powerful site loading capabilities and compatibility with hundreds of attachments, the manufacturer said. A single platform has never delivered this level of versatility, power and precision — all culminating in an entirely new product category created by Case: the compact dozer loader.

“The front coupler featured on this machine is the same as you will find on most compact loaders — this opens the machine up to be used with hundreds of attachments,” said Jacobsmeyer. “We’ve given operators the ability to turn this compact dozer loader into one of the industry’s most versatile and powerful compact machines, and deliver on the awesome capabilities that other manufacturers tried to emulate after the original concepts were announced.”

The Case Minotaur DL550 compact dozer loader has pushed through more than 10,000 hours of field tests, in addition to countless customer clinics and typical lab and engineering testing.

The hallmark advancement of the Case Minotaur DL550 is the chassis-integrated C-frame with six-way dozer blade. The C-frame hydraulically couples into both the chassis of the machine, as well as the attachment coupler. This design provides the stability and smooth operating plane of a small dozer while ensuring that all operating power is channeled through the whole body of the machine. This establishes greater performance and longterm reliability than the simple combination of a dozer blade attachment to a traditional compact track loader, the manufacturer said. It also comes standard with Case Universal Machine Control, which makes the machine ready for any of the major three providers of machine control technology, which are sold separately. It’s also available with an optional, industry-exclusive fully integrated ripper for tearing up tough terrain to simplify dozing and earthmoving operations.

The C-frame is then detached to allow the operator to use it as a loader with a heavy-duty 1.25-cu. yd. bucket, or with hundreds of common loader attachments many equipment owners already have in their fleet.

Page 24 • August 24, 2022 • www.constructionequipmentguide.com • CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT GUIDE

“The Minotaur is truly a fleet of one, that is second to none,” said Jeff Jacobsmeyer, product manager, Case. “Business owners and fleet managers looking for a compact solution that delivers countless benefits in a single footprint will immediately see the versatility this exciting new machine brings to their fleets and will quickly understand what a ‘compact dozer loader’ is capable of accomplishing.”“It’swhattheindustry has asked for,” he added. “Customer input has been a major part of the design and engineering process since the first concepts were discussed, and the result is an entirely purpose-built, intentionally designed machine proudly built here in the United States.”

Powerful Site Loader, Attachment Beast

Fully Connected, Collaborative Fleet Management Case has taken fleet management of compact equipment to an entirely new level with the inclusion of the Case SiteConnect Module — a powerful device that improves the volume, flow and integration of data to the Case SiteWatch telematics platform for real-time monitoring and management of maintenance and service intervals, as well as the analysis of equipment utilization and performance.

“We’ve put this machine through hell and back — pound for pound, there’s no machine like it that delivers the dozing power and precision, as well as the dynamic loading performance,” said Jacobsmeyer. “This groundbreaking, allnew machine demonstrates Case’s commitment to delivering real-world innovation rooted in customer need.”

Case builds the machine standard from the factory with enhanced high-flow auxiliary hydraulics for running the most demanding and high-powered attachments — such as mulching heads and cold planers. Minotaur’s enhanced high-flow hydraulics can deliver up to 41.6 gpm at 4,100 psi via hydraulic quick couplers. The machine also allows operators to harness all that power with “Hydraulics on Demand”, where the operator can easily select the percentage of auxiliary hydraulic flow to the attachment via the machine’s multi-function display. This allows the operator to dial in attachment performance to their preference or the recommendation of the attachment manufacturer — ensuring both effective and proper operation of the attachment.

Hitachi’s Sam Shelton Retires After 27 Years With Company

Vice President Simon Wilson said that Shelton was instrumental in providing him with background information and insight on the company when he joined several years ago.

Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas CEO Al Quinn (C) and Vice President Simon Wilson (R) presented Shelton with a numbered print of a watercolor piece that she had commissioned by artist Gary Wright commemorating the expansion of HCMA into the excavator and mining equipment markets. The print was signed by all employees. The original framed piece hangs in Hitachi’s headquarters.

see SHELTON page 73

“It makes me proud that I was a part of her career. She’s probably the most multi-tasked person in this room.”

Anyone who is familiar with her overall work, her talents in company photography and writing, her meeting and event coordination, and on and on, knows that her career was based on excellence and perfection in every task she undertook — anything less wasn’t acceptable to her.

After 27 years with Kawasaki Loaders and now Hitachi Construction Machinery America, communications manager Sam Shelton is officially retired effective Aug. 1.

Shelton was not only a strong advocate marketer for the Kawasaki/Hitachi brand, she also immersed herself in the study of the industry. She championed and heavily participated in the functions of many of the organizations that guide the heavy equipment industry and ones that continue to make a change within the equipment industry. Shelton’s participation on the AEM MarComm Council, and her stint as the MarComm Council Chairman, was just part of her overall passion for being involved in the industry.

Sam and Bill Shelton took one last opportunity to putter around the new Hitachis on the yard.

“She’s been a great asset to the company,” said Quinn.

Recently, the staff at Hitachi Construction Americas held a luncheon at the company’s North American headquarters in Newnan, Ga., where more than 100 coworkers, friends, local vendors and others turned out to say goodbye, laude her achievements and wish her the best of luck. Company CEO Al Quinn praised Shelton for her passion and persistence, but mostly for how she truly supported the changes within the organization over the years and was “always looking to take care of the dealers’ needs and to keep those needs at the forefront of her agenda.”

It was a bittersweet retirement party for these three. This year marks the 25th anniversary that the team of (L-R) Lynn Nolan of H&W Solutions; Andi Counts of Veridian Design; and Sam Shelton have all worked closely for creation of some of the industry’s most creative and innovative marketing campaigns and design work.

“We don’t do residential projects like driveways, and we don’t do any interstate paving, but Crown Paving performs everything in between. The Southall rural retreat is a larger job, but it is a perfect fit because they need skilled professionals for such a high-profile property, and we can exceed their expectations and provide genuine customer service.”

Crown Calls On Thompson Machinery for Cat Equipment

Still, she made the point that her company has been known to travel the length and breadth of the state — to Memphis in the west and Chattanooga and Knoxville in the east — to perform its services for many of its top clients.

Crown Paving’s typical crew at Southall numbers 10 people, along with another fourperson base-stone crew and five more folks handling the concrete work.

In the areas to be paved at Southall, Blackburn said that her people are installing base stone, BM binder, 411-E surface mix, extruded curbing, shoulder stone and doing the final striping.

Paving Firm Keeps Busy in Middle Tennessee

“We pave a lot of subdivisions and have done a few projects recently for the Tennessee Valley Authority [TVA] resurfacing a road going almost two miles to Pickwick Dam on the Tennessee River,” Blackburn said. “We frequently perform mill and paving services for several large national retailers too.”

For more information on the Middle Tennessee resort, visit www.southalltn.com.  CEG (All photographs in this article are Copyright 2022 Construction Equipment Guide. All Rights Reserved.) from

On the Southall project, Crown’s paving crew runs a 2019 Weiler P385B paver and a Cat CB1.7 tandem vibratory roller. In addition, her stone crew is using a motor grader and a smooth drum roller. The company’s extruded curb machine is made by Power Curbers, and Crown keeps a water truck on site, as well.

Paving is manufactured by Caterpillar, and the contractor’s local dealer is Thompson Machinery, a certified Cat dealer in Nashville.“Wehave a great working relationship with Thompson,” said Blackburn. “The only time we rent equipment is if we have a piece that goes down and don’t have a back-up from our own fleet available.”

Southall to Be ‘Immersive Experience’

Besides Southall’s guest accommodations, the resort and spa will feature an apple orchard with 1,300 trees as well as a farm made up of large-format crops, hydroponic and conservatory greenhouses, and a 4,000-sq.-ft. event space. “Southall started as a dream to create a place for people to stay and experience all a farm has to offer, and it’s become more than I could have imagined,” Southall founder Paul Mishkin said in a news release, adding that the resort will be “a truly immersive experience.” After it opens, Southall’s amenities will only be for guests of the inn, but Mishkin has plans to open it for the general public to experience in the future.

Recently, Southall was named one of Travel + Leisure’s magazine’s 2022 Global Vision Award recipients as one of “Six Hotel Brands Changing Travel for the Better.”

Although the entire state of Tennessee has been a hotbed of new commercial and residential development in recent years, Blackburn said that Crown Paving has done most of its work in Middle Tennessee, particularly in the Nashville metro areas —maybe the hottest spot of all in the Volunteer State.Among the more notable projects in Crown’s portfolio, she said, is the multi-year contract it has with the Metro Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) for on-call paving and line marketing services. The MNAA manages Nashville International and two smaller airports in the metro area.

The AGC noted that federal agencies had voiced concern over whether project sponsors would be able to complete projects with the Buy America provision’s requirements.

The industry reacted quickly. The AGC issued a statement saying the administration’s move to “place unrealistic limitations on firms’ ability to source key materials” when the industry is struggling makes no sense.Stephen Sandherr, CEO, said AGC “supports sensible efforts to effectively incentivize the growth of America’s domestic manufacturing capacity.”

Construction industry organizations believe the provision puts unrealistic limitations on construction firms’ ability to source key materials, which they say makes no sense.

The DOT concluded that avoiding the disruption to civil infrastructure (particularly transportation and transit) projects constitutes a rare and appropriate use of the agency’s authority, said John Smolen and Steve Park, Ballard Sphar law firm.

Collaboration With Cat Dealer Finning UK, Ireland Sandvik is a commercial and industrial equipment supplier, providing leading solutions for the mining, quarrying and construction industries. The company supplies large volumes of mobile crushing and screening equipment that can contribute to CO2 emissions when using traditional diesel fuel.To make the shift towards a more sustainable business, Sandvik Mobiles decided to invest in HVO as a renewable fuel and turned to Cat dealer Finning UK and Ireland to supply compatible engines. HVO is a form of renewable synthetic diesel, produced from certified waste fats and oils through hydro-processing. Its performance is similar to regular diesel, but it reduces the carbon footprint associated with operating the engine and can lower nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) under certain conditions. Its chemical similarity to diesel means that the machine’s power output and uptime are not compromised when introducing HVO as an alternative, and it also can be blended with diesel, the manufacturer said.

Caterpillar’s long-standing commitment to sustainability and support for customers during the energy transition to a lower-carbon future means its industrial engines have for many years been capable of running on a range of renewable and alternative fuels*. The Cat C-Series engines supplied to Sandvik Mobile Crushers and Screeners to power its mining and construction equipment can run on renewable and alternative fuels including hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) certified to EN15940 or ASTM D975. Sandvik has successfully completed testing on its range of machines to confirm that they can operate with HVO without modifications to either the engines or the fuel tanks. This helps Sandvik and its customers to reduce the net carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by up to 90 percent compared with conventional diesel, according to the company.

“We are focused on developing our products and services to help our customers transition to a lowcarbon economy and fulfill our company’s purpose to help build and power a better and more sustainable world,” said Steve Ferguson, vice president Caterpillar Industrial Power Systems. “Our Cat dealer Finning offered its expertise throughout the project, sharing its extensive knowledge on engines and fuels to provide Sandvik with all the information it needed,” said Ferguson. “Our Cat C-Series engines give customers the flexibility to use HVO as both a replacement and addition to their conventional diesel fuel, depending on their requirements.”

Robots, Take Two,” the latest eBook from TOMRA Recycling, a global leader in sensor-based sorting, explains the similarities and differences between optical sorters with valve block and robotic arm ejectors and details how, when implemented as part of the holistic system design, both can be used complementary to improve plant sorting performance.Itdescribes what is at the heart of AI, how everyone experiences it every day and opens the reader’s mind to recognize the term “robot sorter” is not just a machine with sorting arms.

Stephen Gorsuch, key customer accounts and distribution manager, USA, Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions, said, “We are very pleased to build this partnership with Country Boy Supply for the construction market and aggregate producers in the states of Tennessee and Georgia, and have them represent our brand for boom drills, parts, rock tools and aftermarket support. With strong experience supporting customers within the construction market we have a great partner that can offer the right technical solution and support to the Tennessee and Georgia markets.”

Readers also learn the four critical components shared by all optical sorters, what different sorting technologies are available for the recycler’s toolbox, and software’s role in sorting. Processing software, in particular, is critical to the sorting process, and it should be developed specifically for the type of sorting technology employed, so the recycler can maximize material recovery.TheeBook concludes with the message that, while not new to the recycling industry, the use of AI and deep datasets is expanding, which is helping to increase material processing speed, achieve higher recovery rates of the most complex material fractions, and maximize circularity by bringing more high-quality recyclates into the loop. Together, optical sorters — both with valve block as well as robotic arm ejectors — allow the workforce to be used more efficiently to lower overall operating costs for the recycler. To be most effective, however, these sorters must be positioned in the line as part of a holistic approach to the automated circuit. Country Boy Supply LLC will be supplying Sandvik’s comprehensive range of boom drills, rock tools and full aftermarket support for customers in Tennessee and Georgia, effective June 2022. Country Boy Supply LLC, based in Conyers, Ga., officially started in 2016, but CBS’ CEO Brent Taylor’s experience in the drilling industry goes back to 1983. Since then, he has worked in many different roles from clean up to mechanic, driller, blaster, foreman to now CEO for the drill contracting side and the supply side.

Drawing from deep datasets, optical sorters using different ejection methods process material fractions more efficiently and with higher purity rates than at any other time. But what exactly constitutes a robot in the recycling industry and how do these machines leverage the deep learning subset of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to benefit today’s recycling facilities?“Recycling

McGeorge Contracting Co. serves as the general contractor of the project. “McGeorge is known for expedient construction of large projects, most notably Highway 70 from Interstate 30 to the Hot Springs Bypass. The contractor completed that project three months ahead of schedule,” said Evans.

Currently, minor tie work is taking place at both ends, along with bridge painting, guard rail work and permanent seeding. The job has consisted of construction of 10 bridges and seven large box culverts. The structures include two W-beam span bridges with a total length of 324 ft. and three plate girder unit bridges with a total length of 635 ft. Evans noted the most time-consuming part of this project has involved the earthwork, base and surfacing and building of the now completed bridges.

“Citizens of Fountain Lake, Hot Springs Village, Jessieville and surrounding areas will be able to travel into Hot Springs faster and safer for such things as shopping and medical care,” said Tony Evans, ArDOT District 6 construction engineer. “Controlled access of four-lane roadways is our normal criteria where there will be exit interchanges and no driveways for the length of the route. The National Park Service requested that there was controlled access, as well.”Work began in March 2020. The bypass extension, which serves as a two-lane route that will have controlled access with entrance and exit ramps, includes multiple bridges, which have already been completed. Evans said one of the biggest challenges for workers has been the excavation through high points in the project. “The geology of the area is very diverse with extremely hard rock, which had to be negotiated. Explosives were used on some points to break free the rock to construct the roadway.”

Fortunately, dealing with area motorists has not been a big concern for crews. “This project is new location work, unlike urban rehabilitation projects,” said Evans. “There was no traffic to manage on a new highway. There were minor inconveniences to the local roadways that cross the new bypass.”

$78.5M King Expressway/Hot Springs Bypass Under Way

The job called for 2,233,411 cu. yds. of unclassified excavation and 2,691,692 cu. yds. of compacted embankment. Cranes, backhoes, dozers and dump trucks have been required to perform the work. Concrete, steel, reinforcing steel, aggregate base and asphalt are among the chief materials being used.

Volvo Trucks NA Expands Capabilities of Its I-Shift With Dual Power Take-Off

To view our current comparison trailer specification charts visit www.constructionequipmentguide.com

The I-Shift transmission with the dual PTO improves functionality, productivity, fleet utilization and versatility. It also complements the existing single, double and triple PTO suite of offerings.

Volvo’s transmission PTO T4X-J2X (PTRD-D3), a transmission-mounted clutch dependent power take-off (PTO) with two independently clutched rearward facing DIN connections.

PTO allows I-Shift to incorporate two independently clutched DIN 5462 drives, or one SAE 1410 flange and one DIN 5462 drive, separated by the vehicle’s centerline. By separating the two drives, space is created to allow for the installation of two pumps, simplifying installations and serviceability in the field. The output drives are independently clutched, enabling the vehicle to serve applications either separately or simultaneously.

“Leveraging the new capabilities of a dual PTO in Volvo’s I-Shift transmission increases the truck’s operational versatility — a customer can haul portland cement one day and aggregate material the next,” said Andy Hanson, product marketing manager at Volvo Trucks North America.

The PTO’s factory supplied DIN 5462 ports and SAE 1410 flanges are interchangable with the SAE 1310 flange and SAE-C and SAE-BB ports, which are all offered through Volvo’s parts distribution network. The factory-installed dual PTO, which carry the same warranty as the I-Shift transmission, also includes dash switches to provide independent left and right side control.

The I-Shift transmission with the dual PTO improves functionality, productivity, fleet utilization and versatility.

Volvo installed PTOs also can receive factory installed Parker gear and piston pumps.Anexpanded benefit of the I-Shift transmission is that it comes in 12, 13 and 14-speed configurations. I-Shift also is available with an overdrive gear and crawler gears of either 17.5:1 or 32:1, providing the ability to cruise at highway speeds while still allowing for excellent efficiency, “startability” and slow-speed maneuverability.“Formorethan 15 years, Volvo Trucks’ I-Shift intelligent automated manual transmission has set industry benchmarks for fuel efficiency, vehicle performance, safety and driver comfort. With expanded capabilities thanks to the dual PTO, the Volvo Trucks customer will see more benefits in functionality and cost savings as well,” Hanson said. Volvo Introduces Fossil-Free Steel With Hydrogen in Trucks

Small scale introduction of the steel in Volvo’s heavy electric trucks will begin in the third quarter of 2022.

Volvo is now introducing fossilfree steel in its trucks. The steel is produced by the Swedish steel company SSAB and the heavy-duty electric Volvo trucks will be the first to include it, the company said. The steel from SSAB is produced using a completely new technology, based on hydrogen. The result is a much lower climate impact than conventionally produced steel. Small scale introduction of the steel in Volvo’s heavy electric trucks will begin in the third quarter of 2022. “We will increase the use of fossil-free materials in all our trucks to make them net-zero not only in operation — but also when it comes to the materials they are built of,” said Jessica Sandström, senior vice president product management, VolvoTheTrucks.firststeel produced with hydrogen will be used in the truck’s frame rails, the backbone of the truck upon which all other main components are mounted. As the availability of fossil-free steel increases, it also will be introduced in other parts of the truck.

Ninety Percent of a Volvo Truck Can Be Recycled Today, approximately 30 percent of the materials in a new Volvo truck come from recycled materials. And up to 90 percent of the truck can be recycled at the end of its life. “We are continuously striving to further minimize our climate footprint. We are also moving towards greater circularity in both our operations and our trucks,” said Sandström.VolvoGroup is collaborating with SSAB on fossil-free steel since 2021. The first machine, a load carrier made of fossil-free steel, was showcased in October 2021. Fossilfree steel will be an important complement to the traditional and recycled steel used in Volvo’s trucks. Volvo Trucks is committed to the Paris agreement and to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the value-chain by 2040, at the latest. For more information, visit volvotrucks.com. 

Ismal also believes the stress test’s results revealed the tip of the “There’siceberg.so much more we can do,” he explained. “There are more complex structures we can design, and then there’s more testing that we can do that gets into much more rigorous things like dynamic loading, testing for vibrations, and all sorts of things that the Arkansas structures’ lab is definitely capable of. So, this was, in a lot of ways, proof that this idea can work, and now we need to actually develop it further.”

Page 60 • August 24, 2022 • www.constructionequipmentguide.com • CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT GUIDE

Finally, the load was increased to 12,000 lbs., a weight far above its design strength, at which point an obvious failure occurred when a large chunk finally broke off, according to an article on the university website. When the test was concluded, Ismail was relieved that his beam had done what it was designed to do, and with a lot less concrete than usual.

What followed were months of collaboration. Inherent in their discussion was that fabrication methods were inextricable from the design. As Ismail explained, “We’re trying to develop methods that are fabrication-aware. When we’re actually designing and optimizing the structure, we know how it’s going to be built, and the rules of how it’s going to be built go back into the design process so it’s more circular and not as linear. So, we had months of conversations with Emily and Edmund about the actual mathematical principles behind their ZipForm system. What were the limits? What were the constraints? And then we found a way to put that into our structuralFinally, model.”Ismail was ready to see his unorthodox beam design become a reality. Harriss’ computations and Baker’s jig-system were essential to shaping the formwork, which was created at the Fay Jones School’s Build Lab in Fayetteville, where Baker oversees the digital steel lab. Her method allowed them to make steel formwork with complex curvature like Ismail wanted almost as easily as she could make formwork for a flat beam. “This is a vast improvement on other methods that might be used to make curving formwork,” she said in describing the process.

The conventionality of the materials underscored Ismail’s larger goal: he is interested in more efficient and sustainable design, but not necessarily revolutionary new materials. While he is excited about the potential for things like 3-D printed housing, that is decades away, and people need homes now, he said. “Our group is interested in what is applicable today, like what can we go out and build right now. And that’s why we’re looking at regular strength concrete, regular strength steel, and fabrication methods that are relatively cheap and affordable, which is why this Arkansas project was so exciting. Emily and Edmund had been working on a method that can be replicated anywhere in the world quite easily.”

His beam performed the way he hoped, as it exhibited small cracks and minor bowing, or what Poblete described as “flexural cracking and deflection.” The test proceeded through a series of steady weight increases followed by temporary plateaus, the spidering cracks documented by graduate students wielding black markers crawling under and around the beam.

A form designed through the Zip-Form system allowed a concrete beam to be poured using less concrete but maintaining strength.

The actual beam test proved uneventful in the way success often does. It was designed to carry 8,500 lbs., and beyond that, the goal was to fail safely, in what Ismail describes as a “slow, ductile manner. You don’t want it to collapse suddenly and in a scary way.”

Cameron Murray, an assistant professor of civil engineering at UA who advises Poblete, assisted with the pouring of concrete into the formwork the week prior to the test. While he said there was nothing unusual about the concrete used, he noted “all of the materials were made in Arkansas. The coarse aggregate was quarried in Hindsville, the sand was from the Arkansas River in Van Buren, the cement was made in Foreman, [and] the water was from Beaver Lake. Concrete is inherently a local material.”

Common Materials Make Up BeamÊs Concrete

“We can apply these principles to materials that already have a flatness to them and manufacture pieces that are more efficient in strength and yet use fewer resources,” he explained.Theopportunity to prove it came when Baker ran into Ismail at a conference, found they had common research interests, and invited him to speak to her class. While Ismail was talking to her class about beam optimization, a lightbulb went off over her head: Maybe the Zip-Form system could be used to help Ismail create a beam of complex curvature?

Gauging Industry Hardship

Slowing Its Roll

wondering where the trillion dollars went while they are still stuck in traffic, still hearing about boil water orders and still wondering why we can’t have better transit systems.”

New rules and further updates are likely to be formalized in the coming months, they reported.Butif an agency has existing Buy America requirements that are more stringent than these new requirements, then these new requirements may be superseded by the more restrictive requirement. “Interpreting the government’s various requirements can be tricky, especially where compliance with one does not necessarily mean compliance with another,” said Gallacher and Debin.  CEG

PROVISION

The National Law Review noted that various federal agencies have historically implemented their own domestic materials provisions over the years. Those have included standalone provisions that apply to particular grant and infrastructure projects.

New ‘Buy America’ Rules to Be Formalized in Coming Months

Smolen and Park attribute the waiver to the inclusion of construction materials, which have not been previously subject to these“USDOTrules. sought comments from affected industry participants as to whether to provide a broad, temporary waiver.” The industry responded and the waiver came about. In doing so, the agency noted it would allow implementation of the Buy America requirements in a way not overly burdensome.DOTissued the waiver in light of ongoing supply-chain issues and other regional challenges in sourcing domestic construction materials.“Thede-facto transitional period affords USDOT the time to develop the Biden administration’s enforcement and compliance mechanisms,” said the Ballard Spahr partners.“Italso provides state DOTs the time necessary to update their standards and specifications, allows contractors and industry participants to incorporate the relevant Buy America contract provisions and better informs the FHWA in addressing its noncompliance and oversight processes.”

AGC expressed concerns with the Buy America provision back in January, warning that Biden’s regulation could delay infrastructure projects funded by the law itself.

Page 62 • August 24, 2022 • www.constructionequipmentguide.com • CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT GUIDE

“The IIJA provides funding for physical infrastructure like roads, water systems, the electric grid, and more,” said the association. “The new and expanded Buy America requirements apply to all federally funded programs and include manufactured products, like iron and steel, and also construction materials used on projects within those programs.”TheAGC pointed out, too, that federal agencies had voiced concern over whether project sponsors would be able to complete projects with these requirements as they stand. The association said at the time it was working with various agencies as well as other industry stakeholders in addressing this“Manyissue. products manufactured in the U.S. do not meet the requirements because some component or material used in production is globally sourced,” said AGC. “For instance, a pump manufactured in the U.S. that includes an impeller produced overseas does not satisfy the requirements.”

AGC considered EPA’s model “successful in getting funds out the door through its state revolving fund programs for drinking water and wastewater projects and still abiding by similar requirements since the Recovery Act of 2009.”

The association was happy when in May the DOT proposed slowing rollout of the Buy America requirements to allow for development of enforcement and complianceSuspensionguidance.of provisions was intended to “provide for strengthened enforcement over time,” according to the DOT. During negotiations of the infrastructure legislation, AGC secured exemptions for concrete, asphalt and aggregates from the definition of ‘construction materials,’ the association reported. “AGC supports this move by the department and will voice that during the comment period.”Atatime when transportation contractors are still facing historic disruptions to the material supply chain, “it is self-evident that more time and collaboration among industry partners is needed to be able to meet these new requirements,” said AGC.

In July, DOT published a request for information on the provision requirements that specified construction materials be produced domestically. The agency wanted to know how the requirement should be interpreted and implemented.DOTwanted to gauge present availability of U.S.-produced construction materials commonly used and how the requirements might impact DOT-funded projects. “AGC helped lead an effort with 41 other national organizations calling on the administration to extend the 180-day waiver to ensure that projects are not needlessly delayed,” the organization said. “AGC continues to be concerned about the current availability and pricing of construction materials and the unintended consequences that this new provision could have.”

The new guidance, however, is applicable to all federal financial assistance programs where funds are available for infrastructure projects, according to the Review. This, regardless of whether the funding comes from the IIJA, although limited exceptions might be available for emergency response expenditures, said David Gallacher and Ariel Debin.

In May, the DOT proposed pausing the Buy America requirements to allow for development of enforcement and compliance guidance and to provide for strengthened enforcement over time. from page 36

Diverse Geology Calls for Crews to

According to Jared Wiley, ArDOT’s assistant chief engineer of planning, much of the credit for the almost completed undertaking goes to the community that made the work possible.“This is a partnering project. The citizens approved a tax to help make this project a reality and are providing $30 million towards construction.”  CEG BYPASS from page 52 codes. The technician decides as to whether the issue can be addressed remotely — such as clearing codes or updating software — or if it requires a trip to the “Reducingmachine.tripsto the field, showing up with the needed parts on the first visit, and the ability to avoid field visits all together by remotely clearing basic codes all drive major savings in time and resources, both for the equipment owner and the dealer service department,” said Jacobsmeyer. “This type of collaborative fleet management has the ability to drive major gains for fleets of all sizes and ensure optimal uptime.”

And in the case of a service need, the Case Minotaur DL550 is built for ease of service with groundline access to grouped service points and checks like every machine in the Case lineup. Service intervals and machine operating information are easily accessed in the machine’s eight-inch LCD display in the cab.

“Weather always impacts construction,” said Evans. “Contractors account for potential weather impacts when they build their initial schedule to determine the number of days they bid.” From a design perspective, it’s gratifying for crews to play a part in a project of this magnitude. As crews race toward the finish line, it’s important to note that the project has taken more than 20 years for this project to go from conception to reality.More than two decades ago, ArDOT hired a consultant to assist in choosing an initial alignment for the bypass from U.S. Highway 70, north to Highway 7. They used a highpowered computer program that, after inputting all the necessary variables, would help select the best cost route between two locations. Among the many variables was terrain, bridge and tunnel costs, excavation cost, cost of fill and environmentally sensitive areas. Regarding unexpected issues that caused a delay for workers, “There is an issue with the slopes adjacent to a bridge,” said Rick Ellis, division head of ArDOT’s bridge division. “The plans of the retaining wall at Mill Creek Road were in error. Among other things, the retaining wall plans consisted of specific details for wall location, orientation, length and wall elevations. Some of the top of wall elevations were calculated and detailed incorrectly. This error was not discovered until the retaining wall had already been constructed.“This would have made it very difficult, if not impossible, for the slope of fill behind the wall to be maintained in the future,” said Ellis. “The type and design of the wall did not simply allow more wall to be added to the top. A new wall had to be constructed in front of and attached to the already constructed wall. This was a unique issue that required a lot of collaboration between ARDOT, the contractor and the wallEllisdesigner/fabricator.”remarkedthatit’s extremely rewarding to see the work so close to completion.

Proudly Manufactured in Wichita, Kan. The Case Minotaur DL550 compact dozer loader is manufactured in Wichita, Kan., on a dedicated line purpose-built for this one-of-a-kind, industry-first machine. It represents more than six years of development and collaboration between numerous Case plants, personnel, testing facilities and departments. “The Case Minotaur DL550 embodies our dedication to practical innovation — real world, customerdriven solutions,” said Jacobsmeyer. “Through this, we created a whole new equipment category and we’re delivering the integrated technologies that drive improvements for operators in the field and for business owners at their bottom line.” New Rockstar Machine Tours North America In its 180th year in business, Case has proven to be a company on the move — and the development of the Case Minotaur DL550 compact dozer loader is proof of that in both iron and technology. To celebrate the launch of this first-of-its-kind machine, Case is launching a tour of the United States and Canada with more than 30 stops where the machine will be showcased at Case dealer locations. “We are bringing the excitement of this industry-changing launch to every corner of North America,” said Terry Dolan, vice president — North America, Case Construction Equipment.“Wehave more than 180 years of experience in the field, but we’re making moves like a startup, dedicating more time and resources to the field, and spending more time where it counts — with the men and women who run businesses and operate this equipment every day. We can’t wait to see you on tour.”

“This new roadway has some fantastic views that showcase the geology of Arkansas and fits in well as a scenic highway. This is a project that all citizens of Arkansas can be proud of. The benefit will not only be to the locals but also visitors, particularly those who travel to Lake Ouachita State Park and other locations.”

Hitachi’s Sam Shelton Retires

“She gave me the history of where the company had been and what her thoughts were for the future. Sam already has quite a footprint on what is taking place at Hitachi.”

• AGC EDGE Project Manager Development Program Date:https://training.agc.org/course/vpmdp220902/)Monday,September26,2022–2:00PM (EST) ONLINE, Virtual Training/Professional Development

Wilson gave an invitation to Sam and Bill Shelton to join them at ConExpo 2023 to see the continued hand and footprints left by Shelton in many of the things they will be doing.Retired Vice President Gary Bell said, “I stole her away from product support. She soon became an industry leader in trade associations and groups that contributed to marketing this industry as a whole. It makes me proud that I was a part of her career. She’s probably the most multi-tasked person in this room — she can handle more big projects at one time than anyone I know.”

Retired Assistant Vice President Wayne Powell said that Shelton was a great asset for the service department and was able to conquer all of the computer issues of the day to keep things going smoothly. “We had a lot of good times,” he said. “When she asked us to do the impossible by having machines prepped for shows and what not, we always did whatever was needed because we understood if Sam needed something, it was important to the company.”  CEG (All photographs in this article are Copyright 2022 Construction Equipment Guide. CEO Simon Wilson spoke during the retirement luncheon and announced to Shelton’s husband: “She’s all yours Bill!”

A couple of guys who don’t need much introduction in the Kawasaki/Hitachi wheel loader business and have decades of service to the organization, Gary Bell (L) and Wayne Powell were in attendance and remembered when Shelton was “the new kid” in the business.
