Lynches River Contracting Helps S.C. Racetrack to Re-Open By Eric Olson CEG CONTRIBUTING EDITOR
A raceway park is set to re-open in Kershaw, S.C., that promises to give people of all ages the opportunity to get behind the wheel to enjoy the speed and action that comes from driving on a road course. When the revamped Carolina Motorsports Park is fully operational in August, it will allow amateur car and motorcycle racers to try their hand on a 2.27-mi. road course. In preparation for day one, the park’s new owner, Michael Cummings immediately initiated plans to significantly upgrade the facility — none more important than a much-needed and preciselydone milling and paving project. “We’re repaving it because the track is 20 years old and the surface is worn, which causes degradation to the soft racecar tires and wears them out,” said Cummings, who purchased the park on June 10. “Carolina Motorsports Park will accommodate a wide variety of cars, from sports cars to race cars, as well as motorcycles. We will do a lot of first responder training, too — pretty much everything with two or four wheels.”
Paving Experts Required To make sure the new road surface was smooth and even, Cummings brought in Lynches River Contracting Inc., a veteran Pageland, S.C., company that specializes in asphalt work across the two Carolinas. Much of the contractor’s work also is with the transportation departments in each state. Advanced Materials Services LLC (AMS), in Auburn, Ala., an engineering consulting firm, collaborated with Lynches River to develop the specifications and rehabilitation plan for the new Carolina Motorsports Park. The company’s principal engineer on site was Brian D. Prowell, Ph.D, P.E. Along with Tommy James, P.E., also from AMS, Prowell worked in echelon to ensure project specifications were achieved. Lynches River Contracting Inc. (LRC) is run by the partnership of Thad Preslar, president, and Lee Sanders, vice president. All team members agree that milling and paving a road course speedway demands a higher precision and techniques not generally used on roads and interstates. “You really need everything to be perfect on a racetrack — the precise smoothness, the correct

mix, a high- level of in-place density, the binder needs to be right, the joints have to be well made — all those things are important to get the track exactly the way Michael [Cummings] wants it,” Prowell said. For their part, the first thing

Preslar and Sanders did upon signing the contract to do the asphalt work was to visit the racetrack, along with a group of other paving professionals within the company. “Our team of people meet every Wednesday and we discuss our jobs, but within the last month or 45 days our primary focus was on the racetrack,” Sanders said prior to the start of milling and paving on June 22. “The plan was not something that we came up with overnight — there was a great deal of forethought and study of the site by a lot of people to decide the best way to do the job. This planning also included a great deal of effort from Boggs Materials Inc., which designed and produced the asphalt; Boggs Transport Inc., which transported the asphalt to the track without any hitches, which was challenging; and Boggs Contracting Inc. provided survey and ride smoothness testing.” Sanders added, before the work began, that “The paving itself shouldn’t take us more than four days. We have allotted three days, but we have several crossovers we must do, which I think will run over to an extra day.” His prediction was accurate as LRC completed the paving portion of the project in less than a full workweek of starting the project.
Paving Crews Saw Job as a Challenge The liquid asphalt binder, supplied by Associated Asphalt Partners LLC, used in the asphalt mix on the racetrack is more viscous-stiff and stickier than what the LRC pavers normally apply to roads and highways across the Carolinas. But more than one LRC crew member admitted they enjoyed the challenge of putting down a new asphalt racetrack surface, even if it meant working with a stiffer, tougher mix. “I like this project because it’s different than what we are used to, and it pushes us to our limit,” George Hawver, an LRC foreman, said shortly before paving commenced. “Now, we haven’t been pushed to the limit, yet. The milling was the same, but the mix is what will really be different for us because we are not used to this liquid and paving this specific way. The DOT and airport work we do is not done the same way, and this is the first time I have worked on a racetrack.” His colleague, Dennis Craig, the contracting company’s paving superintendent, added, “I have been here for the milling and patching and now for the track’s resurfacing. Out of the nearly 32 million businesses in the United States, only 13 million are women-owned. Family of Business Owners Blackburn comes from a family of blue-collared business owners. Her father owned a drilling and blasting business. After school and in the summers, Blackburn started working at her grandparents’ auto repair station. Upon graduating college with a marketing and economics degree, she started working at her aunt’s powerline construction company. A few years later, she decided to give the corporate world a try at a large holdings company. Blackburn worked her way up from an entry-level position to managing a department and playing a vital role in the company’s marketing, business development and customer retention efforts. “While I thrived in that environment, it was apparent to me that owning a business was something I wanted very much,” she said. However, before Blackburn ventured out on her own, she was recruited by a local healthcare agency that heard about work at the holdings company. With an offer too good to refuse, the CMO and CEO tapped Blackburn to help grow the business and position it for an acquisition by one of the largest agencies in the world. “With the agency acquisition complete, I was ready to move on and finally launch my own business. I saw an opportunity in the paving market because of the growth that Nashville was experiencing and the shortage of specialized contractors. I knew I wanted to build off my experience of running small businesses, growing and attracting business, and in an area that was and will always be needed, like asphalt and concrete construction.” Experts in a Family Environment Crown Paving was created in 2015 and its services include paving, milling, patching, repairs and maintenance, seal-coating and striping. Crown Paving’s Projects … Operating During a Pandemic One of Crown Paving’s notable projects includes the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority and it is currently in the second year of a five-year contract. Crews perform paving and striping services in non-secure (landside) areas for airport projects at Nashville International Airport (BNA) & John C. Tune (JWN). Blackburn explained that the “on-call” component of the contract simplifies and expedites the repair and construction process. “It’s really given us the opportunity to shine in all our service areas.” How has coronavirus pandemic impacted Crown Paving? As an essential business, Crown Paving has been able to continue to operate. Blackburn said that “right off the bat” she implemented: • Installing make-shift hand washing stations on crew trucks; • Reducing the number of employees in each truck; • Fogging trucks, equipment and tools each day; • Conducting, implementing and educating on social distancing standards; and • Sending soaps, sanitizer, masks and cleaning supplies home with every employee. “As a leader, it’s certainly been stressful. I’ve learned that you can’t sit around and be scared thinking ‘what could happen,’ but you can and should, make plans for everything that ‘might’ happen. I usually always have a worst-case plan, and then hope to be pleasantly surprised that I don’t have to implement it.” Blackburn is on Robertson County’s Economic Development Board. In recent months, in partnership with a local hospital CEO, County Chamber, County Mayor and other local leaders, they have focused on discussing COVID-19 best practices. Organizers Postpone 2020’s GIE+EXPO Tradeshow to 2021 Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and continued regulatory uncertainty, GIE/OPEI LLC announced that the 2020 show will be postponed until next year. Show ownership and management of GIE+EXPO, the Green Industry and Equipment Exposition, have been monitoring the situation closely, and have been working with state and local authorities to put on the safest show possible. Unfortunately, the unpredictable nature of such a rapidly evolving environment prohibited this year's show from taking place safely. “The health and safety of our attendees and exhibitors is critical, and it is with profound regret that we announce the cancellation of our 2020 event,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of OPEI, and managing partner of GIE+EXPO. “We’re looking forward to 2021 and already gearing up to make our next show a dynamic and engaging experience for the entire industry. I encourage exhibitors and attendees that have already registered or secured exhibit space to roll those monies forward to the 2021 show.” Next fall, attendees and exhibitors will experience several updates to the Kentucky Exposition Center grounds. The facility is undertaking $8 million in outdoor improvements and enhancements, including: • Replacing the main entry gates to improve ingress and egress; • Expanding paved areas on the north side of the building to increase exhibit space opportunities; • Relocating more than 126,000 cu. yds. of dirt, the equivalent of 63 football fields (or over 1 million wheelbarrows full), to the Outdoor Demonstration Area to improve drainage and irrigation to the grounds; • Adding permanent driving lanes to the Demo Area; and • Improving pedestrian access from nearby hotels by adding sidewalks that extend from Phillips Lane to the new main gate. GIE+EXPO has called Louisville home since the tradeshow began nearly 40 years ago. “We want to thank our host city for its ongoing support of our show,” Kiser said. Despite the need to postpone this year’s show, the industry continues to thrive. “Manufacturers, landscapers, and outdoor power equipment dealers have been deemed essential during this ongoing pandemic, and the industry continues to play a major role in keeping greenspaces around the country safe and accessible,” said Kiser. “What we’ve learned during this period is the extraordinary importance of the living landscape to our mental and physical health, especially for homeowners who have a yard. We saw the ongoing need for the TurfMutt education program by parents and educators, with the robust distribution of our curriculum by Scholastic, the U.S. Green Building Council's Global Learning Lab, and the Wildlife Habitat Council, among others,” Kiser continued. “The new voice of our Foundation, Mutt Mulligan, has been busy promoting the importance of living landscapes.” Planning is already under way for GIE+EXPO 2021, scheduled to take place Oct. 20 to 22 in Louisville. Komatsu Customers Surpass 3.3B Tons Moved Autonomously

Marking another industry first for autonomous haulage, mining companies have now hauled more than 3.3 billion tons of materials leveraging Komatsu’s FrontRunner autonomous haulage system (AHS). Working closely with its customers, Komatsu teams developed the first commercially available autonomous haulage system to help mines move material more efficiently. First deployed in 2008 at CODELCO’s Gabriela Mistral (Gaby) copper mine in Chile, AHS brings together some of the world’s best-selling, ultra-class dump trucks with Modular Mining Systems' DISPATCH Fleet Management System, according to the manufacturer. Today’s FrontRunner system operates around the clock, hauling copper, iron ore, oil sands and coal at 11 customer sites across three continents. At the end of June 2020, there were 251 trucks in operation, with an additional 100 (mainly from installing AHS retrofit kits) planned to deploy within FY2020. “Our mining customers’ ongoing investment in technology and equipment to transition to autonomous haulage underscores the value the system pro-

North Carolina Mulch Improves Safety, Efficiency, With New Feeder Stacker By Eric Olson CEG CONTRIBUTING EDITOR After 22 years hauling and producing residential- and commercial-use mulch, Kirk Strickland knows what one efficient and essential piece of machinery can do for his company’s success. He owns North Carolina Mulch Inc., a family-run enterprise in Middlesex, just to the east of Raleigh. Since its founding in 1998, the business has steadily grown into an established and profitable, multi-service company, which, although not the largest, is nonetheless a major creator and distributor of several types of wood byproducts.

A Better Way to Run a Mulch Business Prior to forming North Carolina Mulch, Strickland trucked mulch for other businesses in and around the Raleigh area. “We were hauling all different wood byproducts,” he said. “Most of it was bark because bark was a necessary evil to the chip mills. Some of it went to mulch processing places and that’s when I thought, ‘You know, there is a better, more efficient way of doing this mulch business.’ “So, when my wife became pregnant with our second child, Luke, she decided she wanted to stay at home,” Strickland added. “We decided we would start a little mulch company because we weren’t sure the trucking company
could support us all.” Initially, North Carolina Mulch had a small, 10-ft. DuraTech tub grinder and a Cat 920 front-end compact wheel loader, he recalled. “We grew consistently but slowly, just based on demand and keeping tabs on what the market was doing and what we thought the need would be going forward,” Strickland said. “If we saw a need, we might add inventory. We might think, ‘Maybe we can do a hundred more loads than we did last year or pick up another good customer who might buy X amounts of loads per year.’ “Our goal was 500 loads a year in the first year, and now we are up to 2,000 a year.” Today, North Carolina Mulch is a recognizable name among landscapers and retail dealers working in the entire eastern half of the Tarheel State, from Greensboro to the Atlantic Coast. A Multi-Service Wholesale Operation Strickland’s company processes and sells several different types of mulch, among them wood chips that it grinds into red, black, walnut and playground-certified products. In addition, the company has a brown-dyed hardwood and a regular hardwood mulch. Then it stockpiles that mulch and regrinds it as needed. Sennebogen Hosts Demo Day at Its HQ

n June 18, 2020, Sennebogen held a live demo day of its 718 tree handlers at the company’s Stanley, N.C., headquarters.
Greg Roberts, Sennebogen tree care manager, said that his initial focus will be on building awareness of the Sennebogen brand and familiarity with the 718 and 738 tree handlers within the industry. “I’ll be working to increase the number of demos so more people have a chance to touch and feel and see what these machines can do. The more exposure this machine has, the more successful it will be. These machines certainly have a ‘wow’ factor to them.” The Sennebogen rubber-tired 718 M is a 47,180 lb. (21,400 kg) purpose-built tree care machine equipped with a hydraulic grapple saw attached to its 43 ft. (13 m) telescoping boom. It dismantles trees up to 75 ft. high, and is on rubber tires. Its high-rise and tilting Maxcab operator station elevates the operator for an unobstructed view into the work zone, according to the manufacturer. Its powerful hydraulics provides lifting capacity to grip, load and stack up to 3,700 lb. (1,700 kg), with the precise controls necessary to let operators perform delicate tree surgery. The 718 R-HD E Series also dismantles trees up to 75 ft. high, and is on tracks for added stability. The 718 is practical for municipal projects; roadside maintenance; commercial work; right of way clearing; utility line clearance; storm work; along rivers and streams; slopes and embankment maintenance; and other jobs that require the removal of more than trees. The 738 M, a rubber tired machine, provides similar capabilities on a larger scale: a 95,700 lb. (43,500 kg) machine with 75 ft. (23 m) reach is built to work off-road in heavy land clearing and right-of-way maintenance, easily dismantles trees up to 125 ft high.

During the peak seasons, those customers will purchase three or four loads per day. “Other than the very small amount of retail sales we do here, everything else is wholesale,” Strickland said. “We sell mainly to retailers that will then sell to landscapers or homeowners by the yard. A good bit is sold to golf courses and to commercial landscapers that specialize in shopping center maintenance.” His business also will haul mulch directly to an end-user for landscaping projects, such as at a shopping mall, or even to a Lowe’s Home Improvement. Sometimes deliveries are made at night directly to the spot where the mulch can be used the next day. “We buy bark and chips year-round,” he said. “A lot of other companies try to buy all they need in the spring and, early on, we tried that, too, but we learned quickly that trying to get out there and scratch out bark and chips in the spring is a hard thing to do. So, we have developed relationships with our materials suppliers and when we go into February, we might have 800 to 900 loads of material stockpiled out here.”

It has proved to be a much better alternative for North Carolina Mulch because it relieves its people from always having to scoop, tote and push mulch piled on the ground. “The Barford has an agitator in it, so we can dump a 10yard bucket of bark right in the hopper and with its feeder belt get a consistent supply out of the discharge belt,” he said. “If the bark has gotten clumpy or packed, the agitator beats it up, breaks it loose and sends it into the pile where the machine cools it as it’s piling. The Barford just makes moving this bark around in the winter much easier for us.” From November through February, Strickland said, the company plans to use its new Barford almost daily just to manage its bark and chip piles. Moving them around to reduce the heat buildup also allows the bark and chips to better retain their color. Instead of turning black, the bark and chips stay a nice brown color and alleviate worries about hot spots in the piles, he added. “The main reason I wanted to try and stack this material was to manage my inventory in the off season, but since I
Overheating Mulch — a Constant Issue But with that stockpiling, Strickland found he had a problem which had been festering in his company yard for years: a constant overheating of the wood materials that could, at times, result in fires within the piles. The short-term solution is to constantly use rubber-tire loaders and dozers to move the wood piles from place to place to disperse the buildup of heat, a task that Strickland said was “almost impossible.” “The bark would just cook itself to where it was like coal and would have no life or color left in it,” he said, “and that was something we struggled with for years.” New Machine Makes All the Difference A much better solution presented itself this past spring when Strickland purchased a Barford BF7048M tracked bin feeder from Sand Science, a Beaufort, S.C., dealer of screening, conveying, crushing and recycling equipment. The 70-ft.-long Barford is used by Strickland primarily to

have the Barford here, we use it for everything. We will also use it in our grinding operation by setting it up to pile right from the grinder. Rather than using that grinder to stack 14 to 15 feet tall, by using the stacker with it, we can stack 40 to 50 feet tall and not have to constantly grind.” North Carolina Mulch, Sand Science — Succeeding Together Strickland has been very happy with the new business relationship he has made in 2020 with Sand Science and his contact there, Eoin Kenny. “For one, their service has been outstanding,” he said. “After we got the Barford machine, Eoin came out here the very next day to help us set up and go through the start-up with us. It was on a Saturday and he worked with us all day.” Strickland said that he and his employees figured out that same day that the Barford was going to do a great job for them on many of the tasks they wanted it to do, but not on everything they needed accomplished. Kenny immediately went to work on resolving the issues and dealt with Barford for Strickland — the result being that modifications and re-engineering were done to North Carolina Mulch’s new feeder stacker machine. “They left the machine here and we used it while they were remaking some parts that they needed for us,” said Strickland. “Sand Science came back and picked up the Barford when the new parts were ready, carried it back to their facility in South Carolina, retrofitted it with those parts and brought it right back in a very timely fashion. By doing that, they eliminated all the issues we had with the Barford, so as far as their service, I couldn’t ask for anything better. Since then, Strickland said, Sand Science has made a point to call him regularly to make sure the Barford is running to suit North Carolina Mulch’s needs. “[Sand Science is] a family-run business that really cares about their integrity and their word,” said Strickland. “I have learned in dealing with them that they do what they say and that’s the way we try to do business, too. We aren’t the biggest in our market and they aren’t the biggest in theirs, but the biggest people are not always the best to deal with. We found that out through the years buying from this person or that company. You need to deal with the most reputable people and not just the cheapest.” CEG

In the fall of 2019, Felling acquired a 2Cell Gantry Robot with Fanuc R-100iC Robotic Arms. The Gantry Robot addition helps to reduce lead times by increasing production capabilities and efficiencies, according to the company. “Our [Felling Trailers’] goal with adding the 2-Cell Gantry Robot is to provide a consistently high-quality product while reducing production lead times,” said Paul Radjenovich VP of operations of Felling Trailers. Felling is no stranger to robot weld systems. The Gantry Robot is one of several robots that Felling has put into service throughout the years. In early 2000, Felling Trailers purchased its first robotic welding system, an OTC Robotic Welding Cell. The OTC was utilized to produce a variety of ramps for its 90A production operator staging the fixture for the next gantry robot program run. plus ramp trailer models. Then in 2010, the company purchased its second robot, a Genesis Robotic Welder. The Genesis is utilized in the production of ramps, dump trailer doors, and other trailer components. With the recent addition of the 2-Cell Gantry Robot, the company can weld a trailer to framelevel, hitch to tail including cross members, frame rails, headboard, and tailboard. No matter the level of automation that a robot can provide, there remains the need for an operations team. The Gantry Robot’s operations team consists of the production operator, CWI weld trainer, fixture designer, and a maintenance technician. The weld trainer and fixture designer work together to layout the fixtures needed for trailer builds and the programming. The production operator’s role is to place trailer components into the fixture and verify tolerances Felling Trailers’ 2-Cell Gantry Robot during production run. before the robot starts its work.
The robot’s objective then is to weld the trailer to its “frame-level.” While the robot is welding the frame, the operator monitors the welding process while staging the next fixture to run through the gantry robot program. Overall the framelevel weld production process is completed roughly 30 percent faster than a manual process. With the frame-level weld complete, the trailer moves on to an assigned weld team to add axles, tie-downs and other customer-specific weld-on options. To date, the 2-Cell Gantry Robot has completed 150 units built between two of Felling’s most popular model lines. As more model lines are added, new fixtures will be designed and programming written. “The continuous addition of fixtures will help develop multiple teams to work together and advance their training,” said Chris Berg project manager. Along with adding more model lines to the Gantry Robot’s database, Felling also will be adding trailer components such as beavertails to maximize its productivity based on product demand. “We have seen significant growth over the last several years, and with that comes the need to increase manufacturing capacity to meet market demands for our product,” said Radjenovich. The addition of the 2-Cell Gantry Robot has created a new step in the production cycle of trailers. The increased production capabilities have, in turn, created additional jobs on the front end of the build cycle for engineers, fixture designers, fabricators and material handlers to feed the robot. Then on the backside of the production cycle, once the robot has completed the trailer to frame–level, there is the need for weld teams to complete the weld production cycle, bringing the process full circle. Causeway,” said Oscar Gonzalez, FDOT senior community outreach specialist. “The project also will add an additional lane to the eastbound SR 836 ramp to northbound I-95, enhancing traffic flow and safety through the interchange, and add an auxiliary lane along northbound I-95 from north of NW 17 Street to NW 29 Street to accommodate the additional traffic from the eastbound SR 836 ramp to northbound I-95.” Workers were tasked with constructing a new connector ramp from I-95 southbound to SR 836 westbound to enhance traffic flow and reduce weaving, as well as providing three I-395 through lanes in each direction and separate connector ramps for traffic to and from I-95. Moving I-395 on and off-ramps west to North Miami Avenue will result in improved traffic flow by allowing additional routes for traffic to travel north and south of I-395. Crews also are constructing more than 30 acres of usable space under the I-395 bridges, including a continuous trail from NW 3 Avenue to Biscayne Boulevard. “I-395 will be reconstructed from the SR 836/I-395/I-95 [Midtown] Interchange to the MacArthur Causeway Bridge, including an iconic, six-arched signature bridge spanning more than 1,000 feet from west of NE 2 Avenue to east of Biscayne Boulevard,” said Gonzalez. “The tallest arch of the bridge will reach approximately 330 feet in the air. The signature bridge design was inspired by Miami’s status as the center of the Americas, with its arching forms symbolic of the area’s culture as people from the Americas coming together as one. “Aesthetic lighting will be added to the bridge cabling system to illuminate the Miami skyline, making the signature bridge a Miami landmark for generations to come. The new I-395 bridges will be constructed at a higher elevation with fewer columns to convert currently unusable areas into more than 30 acres of community spaces for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.” According to Gonzalez, SR 836 will be double decked from west of NW 17 Avenue to the Midtown Interchange. This section will provide drivers with a direct connection to the MacArthur Causeway that is free of local entry and exit traffic. The existing SR 836 roadway (lower level) and bridges will serve as a collector distributor system that allows drivers to enter and exit from the existing local roads and I-95. This collector distributor system will reduce weaving movements resulting in enhanced safety and better traffic operations on SR 836. Enhancements on I-95 include the total replacement of the concrete pavement for northbound and southbound travel lanes from NW 8 Street to NW 29 Street. The expressways being reconstructed converge at an interchange that experiences more than 450,000 vehicle trips daily, and serves as the major access route for residents and visitors to downtown Miami and Miami Beach, as well as Miami-Dade County’s major tourist and cultural destinations. “Many of these destinations generate traffic 24-hours a day,” said Gonzalez. “Maintaining traffic on these very heavily-traveled sections of roadway is a significant challenge during construction. To overcome this, the design team developed a highway alignment that would allow for construction in areas outside the existing roadway. In the development of the traffic control plan [TCP] phasing and detours,
the design team modeled each detour and TCP phase in micro simulation software to evaluate operations and minimize potential delays.” There are six major milestones on the project. The first was completed in 2019, and involved a major traffic benefit, adding an auxiliary lane along I-95 northbound between SR 836 and NW 29th Street. The remaining milestones include widening the eastbound SR 836 to the northbound I-95 ramp, opening the westbound signature bridge to traffic, as well as opening the SR 836 double deck and the eastbound signature bridge to motorists and opening the community spaces below I-395. Gonzalez noted that COVID-19 has presented challenges during construction, as many of the routine operating procedures had to be re-evaluated, with new processes put into place. “This includes moving to virtual project and coordination meetings; ‘ticketless’ electronic project data submittals; and maintaining worker separation. However, with lower traffic volumes resulting from the pandemic, the project team expanded lane closure hours, which has allowed work to be expedited while maintaining safety for the workers and drivers. This includes implementing lane closures during daytime hours which, under normal traffic conditions, would not be possible. “The team was able to implement daytime closures on SR 836 and continuous [24/7] closures on I-95 to expedite the concrete replacement work that would normally occur during nighttime or weekends hours. The expanded work hours on I-95 will expedite the concrete replacement work by approximately four weeks, greatly reducing impacts to the traveling public. The traffic volumes are monitored daily by the project team, and closure hours are being adjusted as traffic volumes begin to increase.” Currently, there are roughly 500 workers laboring on all three project corridors during daytime and nighttime shifts. On I-395, there are two Auger Cast Pile (ACP) crews, one working on the center pier foundations for the signature bridge and a second team focusing on the segmental bridge foundations that will support the local I-395 connector roads. The center pier foundation will have 128 ACPs. Once the contractor completes the ACPs for the center pier, they will move to the arch foundations. “A total of approximately 360 ACP out of 1,377 have been installed to date on the I-395 corridor,” said Gonzalez. “The foundation crews follow behind the ACP crews, which are then followed by the pier construction crews. The bridge segments for the local connector roads are being cast by the joint venture. Demolition of sections of existing I-395 are ongoing and, by project’s end, I-395 will have been demolished and reconstructed.” On SR 836, the contractor is working on minor bridge widening and is in the process of demolishing the center deck section between the eastbound and westbound lanes to allow for the construction of the foundation and piers that will support the new double-decked section. ACP operations for the SR 836 foundations began in July 2020, with a total of approximately 571 ACPs required for the foundations. The project, being constructed by the Archer Western — de Moya Group Joint Venture, is expected to be completed in the fall 2024. CEG

High-Performance Prefabricated Components Enhance ABC Method ABC from page 1
(PBES) are major components of these ramped-up techniques. High-performance materials used in prefabrication of bridge elements enhances the entire construction operation. Their integration is expected to significantly improve the condition of the United States bridge network, increase the life-span of bridges and minimize the need for maintenance and repair, according to FHWA research. Acceleration Through Prefabrication The federal highway agency defines PBES as structural components of a bridge, built offsite with a goal to reduce onsite construction time and mobility impact in building new bridges or rehabilitating or replacing existing bridges. Components are built outside traffic areas and transported to the job site where they’re installed quickly and efficiently. ABC reduces traffic impacts, onsite construction time and weather-related delays and can minimize both environmental and roadway alignment impacts. PBES enhances ABC in improving site constructability, total project delivery time, material quality and product durability and work zone safety for the public and construction crews. Over the past 20 years, the construction industry has transitioned to the ABC approach. Once prefabrication is completed off site, bridge components can be slid and moved into place quickly to reduce inconvenience to the public and also enhance the safety of construction workers, according to PCI Northeast, a chapter of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. The prefabricated bridge components undergo quality controls before they are transported to the site for assemSDOT photo

The use of ABC is now employed all over the world for the construction of roads and bridges because of all the benefits associated with it, which include improvement of workers’ safety, the overall quality and reduction of inconvenience to the general public. The organization believes that “from the perspective of the client, accelerated bridge construction may require a change in how projects are approached and justified.” The chapter’s website explains that an advantage of employing ABC is reduced mobility impacts or, better still, reduced traffic flow. “This is because the flow of transportation network and the general safety of road users are linked directly to the impact of the activities associated with onsite construction.” Onsite construction has been associated with significant social impacts on safety and mobility, according to PCI Northeast. The direct and indirect costs of traffic detours which can arise from the loss of a bridge during construction are sometimes greater than the actual cost of constructing the structure itself. “Other good reasons to use ABC have to do with site constructability issues. Most times, the ABC approach can provide solutions that are economical and more practical compared to solutions provided by conventional construction methods.” The Strength of Prefab Prefab bridge construction methods are proving to be a boon for the Lechmere Viaduct transit construction project across the Charles River in downtown Boston. The concrete arched viaduct, which opened to streetcars in 1912 and now carries Green Line trains, is being rehabilitated, and some of its track replaced. The goal is to allow more Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) trains to pass over the bridge. “We will strengthen the structure of the 110-year-old viaduct to handle heavier loads and increased train frequency while also preserving its historic façade,” said MassDOT in announcing the project last year. Work includes the complete reconstruction of track, signals and traction power on the viaduct. This summer, massive precast concrete pier caps were lifted into place atop new viaduct support columns. Joe Pesaturo, MBTA director of communications said prefab construction was chosen for the bridge project because of limited construction site access and limited to no construction material staging and storage areas. limited to weekends, due to the project’s proximity to a highway and commuter rail corridors. “Prefabrication allows for manufacturing to occur offsite during the standard work week. Pre-cast beams are transported to the work site late Friday. Then the beams are installed in their final locations during roadway closures over the weekend. Roadways are then reopened early Monday morning.” Economical, High-Quality Prefabricated girders are providing faster and safer construction on the Northgate pedestrian and bicycle bridge project in Seattle this summer. In July and August, Seattle DOT (SDOT) crews will be installing the first set of bridge spans linking a major residential and employment destination neighborhood. Ethan Bergerson, SDOT media relations lead, said that prefab girders on the project “are more economical and of superior quality because they are manufactured in a controlled environment.” He explained that “the girders we are using on the Northgate Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge are also prestressed, which provides long-term durability and fewer maintenance requirements.” SDOT designed the new, accessible pedestrian and bike bridge over Interstate 5 in Northgate to improve access to communities, services and opportunities as it connects the east and west sides of the interstate. “It’ll also reduce travel time for people walking and biking between the east and west sides of I-5,” according to an SDOT project update. “When complete, the bridge will help connect the neighborhood’s thriving job and retail centers with the rest of the city and region.” The new bridge, for which the girders were pre-built, will span about 1,900 ft. over I-5, landing at North Seattle College on the west side and near a future light rail station on the east side. The spans being installed make up the portion of the bridge that’s referred to locally as the “hairpin turn.” A Big Help for a Little While Sometimes a temporary solution is needed, and modular prefab methods are the perfect vehicle. Acrow Bridge designed, engineered and delivered two temporary modular, prefabricated steel lift bridges during the replacement of the 65-year-old Unionport Bridge over Westchester Creek in the Bronx, N.Y. The first hydraulically-driven temporary lift bridges in the United States, the steel detour structures are expected to be in service for two years. The north lift bridge is 24 ft. wide with 60- and 100-ft. approaches and a 66-ft. lift span. The south bridge, at 30 ft. wide, has 80- and 100-ft. approaches, a lift span of 90 ft., and a 5-ft. walkway along the south side of its 210-ft. length. The north lift bridge was commissioned in October 2019 and the south lift bridge in December 2019, according to Acrow. The heavily traveled Unionport Bridge is the only link between the Bruckner Expressway and Cross Bronx Expressway to the Hutchinson River Parkway and destinations north. The bridge had deteriorated and was deemed structurally deficient and in dire need of replacement. The detour lift bridges were a value engineering proposal by Unionport Constructors JV, owners of the bridge replacement project. The team was able to shorten the duration of the project, maintain seamless traffic throughout construction, and build the new bascule bridge all at one time. Creating Assembly Space In a construction industry forecast, financial advisory firm Deloitte noted that one of the trends to watch in 2020 is the move toward modularization and prefabrication of components. “The rise of module assembly yards — strategically located sites for fabrication and assembling building elements that can then be transferred to a building site for rapid assembly — borrows some of the cost-efficient practices of manufacturing for the construction industry,” the report said. “Modularization has potential to significantly affect productivity and margins for engineering and construction [E&C] firms. In the year ahead, E&C firms could consider evaluating the potential for adding a module assembly yard to production. They can explore the potential cost savings that pre-assembly and modularization could bring to projects,” it continued. Modularization and prefabrication not only can save on labor costs but might also ensure better quality and shorten the project schedule with less labor required onsite, noted Deloite. “This can avoid rework and help improve safety as well.” CEG

Iron Auction Group Hosts Live Auction in Princeton, W.Va.
I
ron Auction Group hosted its first live auction since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis on July 16 at its new location in Princeton, W.Va. Working carefully to observe and follow all the safety guidelines from the CDC and the state of West Virginia, Iron Auction was successful in keeping all onsite customers safe while providing quality, work-ready trucks and equipment, according to the company. Online participation included bidders from 17 different countries and 42 states within the United States. CEG

Lynches River’s president, Thad Preslar, acknowledged the complexities and challenges of creating a racing surface as near to perfect as one can for Carolina Motorsports Park.
To make sure the new road surface was smooth and even, Michael Cummings, owner of Carolina Motorsports Park, brought in Lynches River Contracting Inc., a veteran Pageland, S.C., company that specializes in asphalt work across the two Carolinas.

off one inch of the track and we will be replacing it with 1½ inches of asphalt. We had a few challenges in that the patching had to be to a certain tolerance; that’s a little different than what we do out on a highway.
“The high shear forces from the sticky racecar tires can pull stones out of the asphalt if you don’t have the proper density and the right binder thickness,” he added. “So, we are trying to make sure all those things are in place on the track.”
AMS Provided Engineering Expertise The input from AMS helped the contractor develop the precision paving needed for a road course with 14 turns. “The stresses and the requirements for a racetrack are different than for almost every other pavement and you really need to take that into consideration when you are planning the paving and doing the engineering specifications,” said Prowell. He said LRC would be paving in echelon, which would eliminate the longitudinal joints and, as the track is 36 ft. wide, paving in two passes at 18 ft. wide. Getting uniformity across that 18-ft. pass is a feat that requires good equipment like the Volvo machines used by Lynches River. In addition, by using transfer vehicles to feed the Volvo pavers, Lynches River would not have any segregation of either the temperature or of the aggregate of the mix being fed into the paver to ensure the best possible mat. Sanders added that his team of Volvo rollers “will then come up to make sure we get good compaction and seal up that middle seam so good it will all look like it was poured out of a bucket.” Other elements critical to a finely paved racecourse, Prowell said, include a uniform surface texture as that affects the friction that drivers will feel. Smoothness also is key, as well as the in-place density.
Lynches River Prefers Volvo, Ascendum Lynches River’s business depends upon the reliability and value it gets from its Volvo paving equipment, which it obtains from Ascendum Machinery in Charlotte. The fullservice dealership, with locations across several states, is the exclusive North American distributor of Volvo construction machines. According to Sanders, he has equipment from other manufacturers, too, but the Volvo paving machines and rollers are the preferred choice for Lynches River. “We are using two Volvo 7110B pavers, the 10-20-foot-wide track machines; and the new 5110Bs, an eight-foot-wide paver, which came out last year,” he said. “Volvo selected Lynches River to do a trial of their new 5170B rubber-tire version. They also gave me, out of the goodness of their hearts, a six-month free trial of the 5170 and then the following year, I put my order in for the 5110, which is the tracked version. We do a lot of secondary road paving where roads vary from 18 to 20 feet so you can’t always do secondary road paving with a 10-foot paver or you’ll be paving in the grass.” In addition, Lynches River brought to the Carolina Motorsports Park project Volvo DD120 and DD110 rollers, noted for their advanced Intelligent Compaction systems that give an operator real time measurements of the asphalt temperature, the number of passes and monitor of the density of the mat
itself. “I’ve been most impressed with the Volvo machines we have because their technology and designs are great,” Sanders said. “Not only that, but the parts, service and support we have gotten from Ascendum has been vital to our business. If you don’t have good support and you’re not able to get parts when you need them, you’re left with downtime, and keeping your equipment on uptime means everything in the construction business. “I want to thank Ascendum’s Kristin Parker, Mark Arcilesi and Terry Thompson for loaning us the Volvo rollers and a new 7110B paver to use in case LRC’s went down while getting this racetrack job done,” he continued. “It’s been a team effort from AMS, Ascendum, Villager Construction, Michael Cummings and David Watkins from Carolina Motor Sports Park, and Volvo’s Gary Atkinson and Ray Burn. We have received a lot of support from the Volvo Group and we do appreciate it.” Paving Company Trains for the Industry’s Future Lynches River Contracting was founded by Preslar and Sanders in 2014 after they each gained decades of experience in the asphalt paving business. Each man had previously worked at Boggs Paving in Monroe, N.C. (which became Boggs Contracting in 2019) before partnering up on the new firm. “We have grown from 75 employees to start with and now we are up to 150,” Sanders said. “We were able to grow like that through training. It’s hard to find people to do this kind of work so you must locate men and women who have got the will and the want to excel and be able to grow within
the company. We have two or three young foremen out here that are in their mid-’20s. When you look at older people in the construction industry, like me, with experience and know-how, we’re a dying breed. “But I don’t mind going out in the field to train. That’s why we have been so successful. I started off as a flagger 35 years ago. When I worked at Boggs/Vaughn Contracting, I had a great teacher who put me through a brutal training, which consisted of, at a young age, running my own storm basin and concrete curb and gutter crew to looking after bridge jobs, as well as asphalt paving. So, I have worked in all aspects of construction, even utilities.” Regarding Lynches River’s paving project at the Carolina Motorsports Park, company president Thad Preslar acknowledged the complexities and challenges of creating a racing surface as near to perfect as one can get. “When we read the project specifications that we often get, we sometimes wonder why we bid on some projects, but then if you never challenge yourself to do something great, you will never do anything great,” he said. “When we take on a job like this, it takes our men and women out of their comfort zone and challenges them, and everybody likes to be challenged, I think. If you talk to our people working on this project, they are all excited to be doing something special and I think every one of them would like to be able to drive their family on that raceway and say, ‘Hey, I had something to do with making that track!’ It gives us something extraordinary to be a part of.” For more information about Lynches River Contracting Inc., call 843/675-4285.
