The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is overseeing an $866 million designbuild project that calls for a new southbound/westbound interstate bridge over Old Tampa Bay between Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. ing northbound traffic was built in 1959. It’s being replaced, in part, due to the continually increasing cost to maintain it in the corrosive environment. It also does not meet current design standards.” The new bridge will be built north of the current southbound bridge. The current southbound bridge will become the new northbound lanes. The new structure will consist of eight lanes; four general use lanes, (Tampa to St. Petersburg) and four express lanes; two lanes from the St. see TAMPA page 38

When Heather Thompson and her thenpartner, Brian Hux, decided to open a business together in 2010, they, like most small-business newbies, started off quite humbly. In their case, that meant renting a pickup
truck by the hour, lining the bed with plywood and going to Charlotte-area asphalt plants to load it with hot asphalt, despite being warned not to by the vendors. They did not yet know that telling Thompson she should not do something only spurs her forward and usually leads to a successful outcome. see B&N page 42
