Volvo Machines Work to Restore Glory to Everglades Since 1882, the Florida Everglades have been drained for farming, among other reasons, to the point it is now half the size it was a century ago. But that’s changing. One of largest ecosystem restoration projects in the United States currently is under way. The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, begun 20 years ago, encompasses a giant hydrological restoration project consisting of, among other things, the construction of a new basin storage reservoir in the Caloosahatchee estuary, known as the C-43 water reservoir project. When complete in 2023, the reservoir, which is spread over 10,700 acres of former farmland, will hold excess water from a nearby lake, where it will be treated and then released during the dry season. In total, the dam will be able to hold 200 billion liters of water. Working on a construction project virtually the size of Manhattan comes with its share of dilemmas. For instance, hundreds of canals must be navigated during both rainy and dry seasons. The man in charge of solving any problems that arise is Massimo Bugliosi, project director of Lane Construction-Salini Impregilo. To him, being prepared for anything is essential, and that is why his company relies on the dependable performance of Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) machines. “The key is planning and properly sequencing activities in the right way, and the equipment must be versatile – Volvo machines are up to the challenge,” he said. Currently, there are 42 machines from Volvo CE working on the C43 water reservoir project. This includes a mix of A45 articulated haulers and EC750E 75-ton excavators, with more equipment headed to the job site in Hendry County.

Road Projects Continue Moving Forward in Southern Miss. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced that several highway improvement projects have picked up steam again in the southern part of the state. “Dozens of projects are moving forward throughout south Mississippi, and each one of them is geared toward improving driver safety and increasing Mississippians’ quality of life,” said Commissioner Tom King, chairman of the Mississippi Transportation Commission. A construction project at the intersection of U.S. Highway 49 and SR 42 West in Forrest County is again making progress. The goal of this work is to improve driving conditions by adding a stoplight to the intersection and realigning SR 42 West to match the rest of the road located across the highway. Traffic is now able to use the new roadway along SR 42, and work to install a traffic signal is under way. This $3 million project was awarded to T.L. Wallace Construction Inc., of Columbia. Work is expected to wrap up this fall. A safety improvement project on U.S. 49 also continues. Clearing of the right of way is almost complete, and work on the drainage system is under way. Crews are
moving forward on the placement of erosion control measures. The improvement also will include re-grading the roadway and median for better sight distance and adding a shoulder to the southbound lane. T.L. Wallace also is building this $41 mil-
lion job, with the work anticipated to be done by Fall 2022. After severe flooding forced a temporary closure of the job site, a bridge repair project on SR 42 over the Chickasawhay River is now moving forward. Work was able to resume after the floodwaters receded. Crews

are working to finish the foundations for the columns, before beginning on the columns and other supporting structures. The $1.9 million project was awarded to Key LLC of Madison. It is expected to be completed later this summer. Mill and Overlay Project on Interstate 59 in Lamar County This $14.2 million project was awarded to Warren Paving Inc., of Hattiesburg, to mill and overlay Interstate 59 from the Pearl River County line to Black Creek. Crews are hard at work erecting the barrier walls at the overpasses and clearing the right of way. MDOT expects the job to be completed in Spring 2021. An overlay project in Jackson County along U.S. Highway 90 from SR 63 to the Alabama state line is nearing completion with only permanent striping remaining. This $3.3 million project was awarded to Huey P. Stockstill LLC of Picayune. Crews should be finished this summer. Over in Hancock County, another overlay project is nearing its end on SR 43. Warren Paving is handling this $1.7 million job. It stretches west from SR 603 to the Pearl River County line for about 11 miles. This project, too, is expected to be completed later this summer.

Major Everglades Restoration Project to Be Completed in ’23 EVERGLADES from page 8
“We chose to use Volvo equipment, because it is versatile and can handle the mixes of different kinds of soil,” explained Bugliosi. The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan will boost the quality of life for humans and wildlife alike. The Everglades is home to more than 350 species of birds, 50 unique reptiles and thousands of other types of plants and animals. They bring in more than one million visitors to the park annually from around the world, helping to add to South Florida’s rich economy in tourism and recreation. The Everglades also is a natural reservoir that provides drinking water for South Florida’s eight million residents. The current ecosystem restoration venture is a huge step towards creating a sustainable future where human expansion no longer poses a threat. “To have the opportunity to serve as an essential supplier on a project of substantial environmental impact is something we all strive for,” said Stephanie McCall, Volvo’s vice president of key accounts, Region North America. “Knowing that Volvo CE and our local dealer Alta Equipment is working to preserve the Everglades water estuaries and wildlife ecosystems for generations to come is by far the most rewarding work we could be a part of.”

SANY Excavators Pervade Job Site in Dallas, Ga. By-and-large, a fleet of earthmoving equipment on just about any given job site has a variety of manufacturer's machines from "the regular guys" and then maybe one or two from the newer "up and coming" manufacturers. Brent Scarbrough & Co. Inc. rolled onto a job site in Dallas, Ga., with approximately 40 machines required for a five-month project. A notable 20 percent of those machines were SANY excavators. Brent Scarbrough & Co. Inc., based in Fayetteville, Ga., is
well known for being a contractor who can handle the big clearing and site-prep jobs throughout the southeast. Among those was performing pipe work 10 yars ago for a general contractor on SANY's new 420,000-sq.-ft. North American headquarters in Peachtree City, Ga. This project introduced the company to SANY equipment. Charles Lane is the site superintendent of Brent Scarbrough & Co. on another clearing project in Dallas, Ga., which is a 19 acre parcel of land being prepped for a big box store. Lane has been on this job since February of 2020 and completion was scheduled for the last day of June. The job required movement of more than 160,000 yards of material, including 60,000 yards of material being hauled out. The site contained approximately 40,000 yards of rock that needed to be extracted and crushed for onsite use. Lane said that one of the SANY excavators on the job site working at the completion of the project, a SANY SY335c with a 4,500 lb. NPK breaker, had worked quite well for what he needed, as did the other three SANY machines with breakers for the required rock removal. The machine/breaker combos that had Brent Scarbrough & Co. takes good care of its SANY fleet through its been on the job site early on included a own service division. 5,000 lb. breaker on a SANY 500 for

heavy rock breaking in a deep 24 ft. hole. This was the biggest hammer the company has and the largest used on the site. The smallest breaker on the job site was mounted on a SANY 235 and was utilized for pre-breaking rock down to a smaller size for loading the crusher. Lane said that the reason Brent Scarbrough & Co. utilizes SANY machines as the carriers for all three of the hydraulic hammers being used on this job site is because they’re preplumbed and ready for “plug and play” work. The smallest SANY excavator on the job was a SANY SY135C. This machine was utilized for light duty work, see SCARBROUGH page 58

La. Chooses Boh Bros. for Portion of $353M Canal Project Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards announced May 26 that the state’s Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has selected Boh Bros. Construction Company to build three new bridges as part of the Comite River Diversion Canal Project in East Baton Rouge Parish. “Construction as well as maintaining and improving the state’s infrastructure are essential functions and DOTD has continued to move projects forward, even during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Edwards said. “These bridges are essential to the successful completion of the Comite River project and will be beneficial to the citizens of Louisiana.” New Orleans-based Boh Brothers Co. was one of 11 proposers who submitted Letters of Interest earlier this year, as well as one of five Shawn D. Wilson who submitted Statements DOTD of Qualifications, as part of an innovative delivery process called Construction Management at Risk (CMAR). This process uses a design professional that is engaged by DOTD for professional pre-design or design services, or both. DOTD contracts separately with a CMAR contractor to engage in the pre-construction phase. “This is the first time DOTD has utilized a contract of this nature to deliver services for a major multi-phased project,” said DOTD Secretary Shawn D. Wilson. “This delivery method reduces the amount of contract time because it allows for the contractor and designer to work together much earlier in the design process. This collaborative process saves the state time and money, allowing for the overall construction of the diversion channel to be completed. With appropriate revenue, we could use this on a multitude of projects we have planned.” The contractor also will be responsible for the construction of the following: • New bridge structures over the future Comite River Diversion Canal at LA Highway 67 and LA 19 • A new railroad bridge structure over the future Comite River Diversion Canal at LA 19 • Temporary at-grade highway bypass roads for LA 67 and LA 19 • An at-grade shoo-fly for the Geaux Geaux railway on LA 19 • Utility coordination and, as necessary, relocations • Maintenance of traffic • Local and business access This is one phase of a $353 million project to construct a 12-mile-long diversion channel from the Comite River to the Mississippi River. The effort will include guide levees, a control structure at Lilly Bayou, and four drop structures of the diversion channel’s at McHugh Road, Bayou Baton Rouge, Cypress Bayou and White Bayou. Construction on this project is estimated to begin in Summer 2021.

Minimizing Risk: Manufacturers Share Best Practices Over the past several weeks, AEM has developed a list of best practices based on what many of our member companies are doing to keep operations open while minimizing the risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. For those looking to either reopen or scale back their operations in the coming months, here are some of the actions and initiatives that can be implemented and shared with suppliers and partners, so as to help ensure a successful transition. “We know our members are taking proactive measures to minimize the risks associated with COVID-19 and doing what they can to keep their employees and their families safe and healthy,” said AEM President Dennis Slater. “Many of our member companies are up and running and taking precautions, and many more will be back in operations soon. Volvo Construction Dealer Weighs in on Short-Term Outlook: ‘We’re Coming Back’ “All things considered, we’re confident we’re coming back out of it.” The way Matt McGowan sees it, there’s really no overstating the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has on Cowin Equipment Company over the course of the past few months. No aspect of the organization went unaffected, forcing the Volvo CE dealer and Birmingham, Ala.-based company, which specializes in the distribution of heavy equipment for a variety of industries, to respond quickly and decisively. But now, as summer gets under way and the United States continues to open up, McGowan — the company’s vice president of sales and marketing — can’t help but feel optimistic about what the future holds for equipment dealers, equipment manufacturers and the customers they serve. “We definitely went through a slowdown period, but now we’re headed in the right direction,” he said. “It’s almost, at least activity-level-wise, back to where it once was. I’m not saying we’re quite there yet, but things have really picked up.” Short-Term Slowdown The consensus opinion regarding the effects of COVID-19-related lockdowns on Cowin’s operations: It could have been worse. According to McGowan, the company enjoyed a very strong January and February. Then, despite a significant drop-off in March, the company was still able to post a record-setting first quarter. “There were pockets throughout the areas we cover that never slowed down,” he said. “No DOT jobs were ever shut down by government mandate. So, we were really fortunate there, and that allowed us to pull out a pretty decent April.” The most significant impact occurred when some OEMs that Cowin represents began shutting down in the wake of the pandemic’s emergence in the United States causing some temporary delays in parts shipments. And even when parts did arrive, company employees needed to take the necessary steps to disinfect items which took additional time. “The last thing we wanted was technicians or customers maybe touching contaminated products,” said Stephen
Searcy, Cowin’s vice president of product support. “So, we would disinfect on top of what the manufacturers were doing. It’s improved dramatically now, and people were understanding about it at the time. But it was still a big challenge for us, because our customers were still work ing.” (Anything But) Business as Usual At no point has a Cowin store closed during the pandemic. With that being the case, said Searcy, there were times when it felt like the best course of action was to balance a “business as usual” approach to day-to-day operations while trying to react accordingly to what was happening across the country and around the world. “Information was changing 24 hours a day,” he said. “I think back to our first memo, and it was dated the 28th of February. It basically said, ‘Here’s what’s going on and what we’re seeing developing. We’re not sure how this is going to affect us. But immediately we need to put these safeguards in place.’” Whether it’s been encouraging the increased use of hand sanitizers and PPE, disinfecting shipments of parts, or rethinking how interactions occur with customers, Cowin leaders and their employees have quickly adopted measures to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being is the foremost priority. In addition, internal team communications have been sent several times per week in an effort to keep employees aware of developing news and how it impacts impact operations. “It’s about how things affect employees personally, but also how it affects the company as a whole – and how we want everyone to do their jobs,” said Searcy. “Even now, we have reminders going out saying, ‘We want to stay on top of this.’ Because we want to maintain what we started months ago. We continue to reinforce things with our team, make them a part of what’s going on, and not leave them in the dark.” Reinforcing new behaviors is a critically important task for Cowin leaders in these uncertain times. For example, there was initial worry on the part of some company salespeople regarding customer touchpoints. However, by promoting regular phone contact
encouraging “tailgate lunches” — where takeout food is ordered and social distancing occurs — those concerns have largely been allayed for now. “Customers have been great,” said McGowan. “They work with us, understand us, and recognize things are different than they were before.” Projecting What's Ahead While it’s difficult to project what exactly the future holds for Cowin, its customers and its employees, guarded optimism appears to be the sentiment that rules the day for both the company’s parts business and its service business. “From an inventory standpoint on the machine side, we were well stocked before the pandemic and orders placed before the pandemic only saw minimal delays,” said McGowan. “But during remote work, having parts in stock at the OEM level is great, however, when staffing levels were down to fulfill orders, that posed some challenges. Then, of course, machine availability for orders placed after the pandemic began could see more extended delays.” As a result, he continued, company officials are trying to determine how quickly OEMs that had 2-6-week shutdowns can get up, running and — most importantly — back on track. “I think it all depends on how fast they can get components from thirdparty vendors,” he said. “In reality though, we’re anticipating some new machine orders placed after the pandemic could be coming toward the end of the year.” On the product support side, customers are anxious and want to work. However, some construction jobs that were anticipated just a few short months ago may be delayed indefinitely. “People are a little bit tighter with their funds than what they were a couple of months ago, so it might take a few months, or even a year, for them to get back to the business level that they had before,” said Searcy. “That being said, we’re seeing some signs that are positive. I just hope that continues to grow in the weeks and months to come,” he added.
The Deutz Corporation Sequence Center stores all of the parts and engines for Deutz Value-Add products and Xchange remanufactured engines in one central location.
Deutz Corporation Opens Spacious New Sequence Center in Pendergrass, Ga. Deutz Corporation has opened a new 160,000-sq. ft. Sequence Center at 596 Bonnie Valentine Way in Pendergrass, Ga., located just 1 mi. from the company’s production facility at 1409 Valentine Industrial Pkwy in Pendergrass. “With the new Sequence Center, Deutz is concentrating all operations activities in the Pendergrass area,” said Christian Vorspel-Rueter, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Deutz. “Our goal is to pass the benefits of that enhanced efficiency onto our OEMs and their customers.” The Deutz Corporation Sequence Center stores all of the parts and engines for Deutz Value-Add products and Xchange remanufactured engines in one central location. Each day, employees at the Sequence Center batch together all the parts needed by engine spec and send them over to the nearby production facility. The Sequence Center also has its own production capabilities, building and shipping value-add kits and customized Deutz Power Packs to distributors, dealers and OEMs. “By centralizing all logistics activities at the new Sequence Center site, we can now increase our output by utilizing additional floor space for more remanufacturing and assembly work,” said Bob Mann, president and CEO of Deutz Corporation. “That helps our OEMs and their customers as well, because we’re able to get them the Deutz products they need even faster than before.” For more information, visit www.deutzamericas.com.

NUCA of Middle Tenn. Announces Trench Safety Winner Trench Safety Stand Down (TSSD) Week was held across the nation by the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA), and as part of that event the association’s Middle Tennessee Chapter held its first TSSD Week Contest. The contest was motivation for local companies to participate in this innovative educational opportunity that teaches thousands of construction industry employees the simple message, “be safe around trenches.” The winner of the Middle Tennessee Chapter’s 2020 TSSD Week Contest is Civil Constructors LLC. Their special Toolbox Talk events were held across 27 job sites June 16 to 19 and had 237 employees attend. Civil Constructors LLC will be receiving lunch sponsored by Tennessee 811 and United Rentals Trench Safety. Every June for the past four years, NUCA has helped sponsor the innovative TSSD Week for the U.S. utility construction industry and the Middle Tennessee Chapter has participated since its founding in 2018. This year, more than 60 job sites in Middle Tennessee held special TSSD Week Toolbox
Talks, reaching more than 450 local industry employees. “Trench safety is the biggest threat we face as ditch diggers and excavators. Having

Hundreds of Tennessee workers have been trained and made aware of the hazards of working in and around trenches. As we continue to grow this event we thank everyone who participated; there is safety in numbers. The more ditch diggers we can train and make aware of these precautions, the stronger our industry will grow,” said Matt Mingus of Team Construction LLC, President of NUCA of Middle Tennessee. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic Matt Mingus many events this year took place virNUCA of Middle Tennessee tually. events held by NUCA and industry professionals — both member and non-member organizations — to emphasize the message of safety around jobsite trenches and excavations. TSSD Week is used by industry safety professionals to hold safety training, educational seminars, live demonstrations of trench rescues and other activities to reinforce the important message of trench safety. Due to the enthusiastic success of NUCA’s TSSD Week and its trench safety program, NUCA decided to make June 2020 the first “Trench Safety Month.” The association is devoting the entire month of June to getting the message out to the public and non-NUCA industry companies about the importance of employee safety when working underground or in and around trenches. “While the industry fatal accident rate has been more than halved since 2016, we feel strongly that there is more we all can do as an industry to prevent the needless loss of life. The mission to save lives and prevent accidents remains the vital reason why this annual stand down is so important,” said Doug Carlson, NUCA CEO. Diamond Surface Repairs Concrete Roads in Guilford County DIAMOND from page 1
By Irwin Rapoport CEG CORRESPONDENT
Diamond Surface Inc., via a $13,389,000 contract with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), is rehabilitating and repairing 6.796 mi. of I-73/U.S. 421 in Guilford County between I-85 and 1-40 in Greensboro, N.C. Bridge joints on top of the decks of 17 bridges also are being repaired. The work on the north-south concrete road began in March 2019 and has to be delivered on Oct. 15. The project is being financed by state and federal funds. “They are repairing worn areas as needed, and in the end will diamond grind the entire stretch included in the project,” said Aaron Moody, public relations officer of NCDOT. “The overall concrete pavement is in very good condition, with some minor spalling-type repairs and cracking,” said Patty Eason, NCDOT’s division construction engineer. “The concrete was placed in 2007 and opened to traffic in February 2008 as a section of the Greensboro Urban Loop. Every seven to 10 years we have started doing diamond grinding to refresh these surfaces, to take out some of those irregularities and do any repairs that needed to be done.” This project reflects NCDOT’s desire to do preventative maintenance to reduce more expensive major repairs and reconstruction in the future. “We like to be proactive when funding allows for us to do that,” said Eason. This section of road, with four lanes in each direction, on a daily basis carries between 50,000 and 60,000 vehicles, with 10 to 12 percent consisting of trucks. The road repair element was designed by NCDOT’s Roadway Design Group, along with the Pavement Design Group, and the bridge joints repair by the Structures Design Group. “This is a pretty straight-forward project and it has been in the works for the last 1.5 to two years,” said Eason. “We expect the concrete pavement to last 25 years overall. So once we’ve done this work, we expect to get another 10 to 15 years out of it.” NCDOT’s goal is to diamond grind all of the Greensboro Urban Loop. The DOT inspects its bridges every two years. The joints are being repaired to prevent leaking to avoid damaging the

bridge infrastructure. “The joint sealant sometimes starts to weather and you want to avoid getting water down in your beams, girders and infrastructure,” said Eason. “After this project we’ll have to look at it again in another eight to 10 years.” Diamond grinding the surface of concrete roads has several benefits, including eliminating ridges in the pavement, where water can build up, and ensures water flows to the side of the road. “You start getting a little bit of loose material and some of those areas will start to chip away,” said Eason, “and your ride starts to get not as smooth as you would like for it to be. Diamond grinding will certainly smooth out the pavement and take care of those irregularities and for residents adjacent to the road, reduces the noise.” The blades for the grinding are diamond tipped. “This process has been in construction quite a number of years and it’s been a fairly standard practice,” said Eason. “It may not have been used quite as much until the last 10 or 12 years.” The traffic management plan is based on nightly lane and ramp closures and detours on weekdays and weekends to maximize production. “Drivers should be mindful of crews working in this area and allow extra time for the detours,” noted an NCDOT press release for the project. Due to the daytime traffic, most of the work occurs at night when traffic volumes are lower.

So far Diamond Surface has completed the repairs on both sides of the road and has started the diamond grading process. The repairs for the bridge joint will be done last. Traffic and working at night have been the primary challenge for the crews. “Any time that a contractor has to work at night under traffic, safety is always a challenge,” said Eason. “Accidents in work zones are a lot more frequent than we would like for them to be. Working at night, sometimes fatigue and visibility are issues.” The road repairs began on the northbound lanes and then switched to the southbound lanes. NCDOT and Diamond Surface inspected the highway to identify where repairs were needed prior to and during the operations. “With no traffic you could identify more of what really needed to be repaired,” said Eason, “but amount and types of repairs needed varied and it was not significant at all. For small repairs, they cut out a small section of the road. If the repair was larger, full depth repairs may be necessary. The highway was concrete paved — it wasn’t concrete slabs — so it wasn’t necessary to remove the whole slab.” The limited length of the nightly lane closures dictated the type of concrete used for the repairs, which was high earlyrapid-set concrete, a fast cure type as opposed to a standard concrete that would take seven days to cure. This type costs around $500 per-cubic yard, about 3.5 times the price of standard concrete. see DIAMOND page 32

States leveraged $31 billion in federal funds to advance $66.5 billion in highway improvements during fiscal year (FY) 2018, according to an interactive tool that for the first time provides the American public and elected officials a clear look at how and where each state invests its transportation tax dollars. Obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, the American Road & Transportation Builders Association’s (ARTBA) analysis of Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) data displays information on more than 24,000 projects that moved forward in FY 2018. “This dashboard helps shift the conversation about federal highway investments from apportionment tables and obligation charts to specific outcomes and benefits,” ARTBA President Dave Bauer said. “Such transparency and accountability will help the American people better understand the value they are getting from infrastructure investments.” Nationally, nearly half of the projects — 45 percent — were for repair or reconstruction work on existing highways in FY 2018, according to “ARTBA’s Highway Dashboard: A 50-State Guide to the Benefits of Federal Investment.” Adding capacity (22 percent of funds),
planning, design and construction engineering (14 percent), new construction (4 percent), planning, environmental, research and administration (2 percent), bike and pedestrian facilities (2 percent), debt service (2 percent) and utilities (1 percent), are among the other featured categories. The dashboard allows users to visualize how each state deployed federal funds in a given year and features the top projects dating back to 1950. The ARTBA Highway Dashboard was compiled by the association’s chief economist, Alison Premo Black. The data is submitted by states as part of FHWA’s Fiscal Management Information System (FMIS). “As it was curing, they would test it, looking to get the strength of 4,000 psi before we could put traffic on it,” said Eason. “Repairs to the slabs was very minimal — there were only four of them and 300 square yards in total,” said Terry Kraemer, Diamond Surface’s owner and CEO. The diamond grinding operations began in early June and should be completed in early August. This work usually involves having three grinding machines — PC6000ECs manufactured by Diamond Products Inc. (DPI) — with 4-ft. heads on them operating in tandem for a single lane. “They grind approximately 1/4 of an inch with the diamond tipped saws,” said Eason. “The grinders get very hot and water is used to cool them off. They have a capture system, like a vacuum that picks up the water and slurry as they are ground so that it can be disposed of properly.” Crews are grinding the inside lanes first and, after circling around the work zone, will focus on the outside lanes. “The weather hasn’t cooperated very well, but the operations have commenced,” said Terry Kraemer. “The PC6000s are absolutely crucial. These are very specialized pieces of equipment. There used to be other manufacturers, but it’s a specialized niche. The market for grinding is growing, but there is only one manufacturer right now.” For this project, Diamond Surface purchased a TPH slurry press and other TPH equipment to process the slurry, which squeezes the liquid to separate the water and ground concrete. Kraemer noted that the crews are eager to see how the slurry press operates in the field and to learn how to maximize its capabilities. “It leaves you with a cement by-product that kind of looks like a pillow once it’s pressed,” he said.”We haul this material to a recycling center that is close to the job.” Kraemer is a big supporter of concrete roadways and stresses how grinding them extends their lifespan. “I’ve been in this business for 42 years often [concrete pavements are ignored] because they think they’re going to last 25 years,” he said. “What NCDOT is doing is very smart — they’re fixing all the little defects right away and grinding the surface to add life to it. By keeping the pavement smooth, as we do with the diamond grinder, it increases the pavement life, on average, by 17 years and you can safely grind a road two or three times. “I’m from Minnesota and by far the best pavement here also is concrete,” he added. “Concrete roads can be constructed in which freeze-thaw doesn’t affect them. You have the same basic issues on asphalt as you do concrete with freeze-thaw — it’s just a little bit easier to design your concrete pavements around that process.” As noted, the bridge joints will be done last, most likely starting in late July/early August. “We don’t want to pull them out with the grinding going on,” said Eason. “They’ll remove the joint material, clean it out and reseal the joint. For some, we may need to do addi-
tional work and they’ll replace whatever is required. This is a relatively new roadway — it isn’t the kind of extensive bridge deck rehabilitation that you would normally have with hydro demolition or something like that.” Eason is pleased with Diamond Surface’s efforts. “They’ve progressed well and have been good to work with,” she said. “We have supplemental agreements if there is additional work to be had and if we missed something in the contract.” Peak days have seen 40 to 50 Diamond Surface and subcontractor employees on-site, including those from: APACAtlantic for asphalt milling and pavement; BC Cannon Company for traffic control; Diamond Drilling and Sawing for pavement joint resealing; Fulcher Electric for junction box/inductive loop saw cuts; Diamond Surface Inc. photo Slurry truck Ogelsby Construction for pavement marking; Ram Construction for general structure repair; Surface Preparation Technologies for rumble strips; and RW Eagle Construction for drainage repairs. Crews removed 300 to 400 sq. yds. of concrete and brought in a similar amount. Close to 15,800 tons of asphalt were milled up and placed on the shoulders and about 472,626 sq. yds. of diamond grindings will be generated. Craig Garisson, Diamond Surface’s project manager, is assisted by Nick Buck, grinding superintendent and Todd Christiansen, patching superintendent. “All this work has to be done at night, which adds a few degrees of dangers and risks,” said Kraemer. “Garrison has done a good job of managing the subcontractors, who work well with us and Craig, Nick and Todd and the guys work together very well. “ Heartland Concrete supplied the fast-ready mix; M&M Supply provided the miscellaneous concrete supplies; and Absolute Recycling is disposing of the slurry by-product. Equipment-wise, Diamond Surface is using: Bobcat skid steers (with hammers, bucket brooms, hydraulic hammers and angle brooms), as well as Allied and MBW models; a Cat 926M front end loader; two Kenworth T470 water trucks; a Freightliner 114SD mix truck; a variety of Volvo, Mack, Kenworth, Peterbilt and FRHT semi-tractors; Fruehauf and Mac slurry tankers; a Big Clem 4848 sandblaster; and a variety of dowel bar drills, epoxy pumps, air compressors, utility trailers and rock and cement saws. “A lot of our equipment supports the grinding and patching,” said Kraemer. “We have a full-time mechanic with the grinding and patching crews at all times. If something grows wrong with the equipment, we usually have it repaired within 48 hours. Downtime is not much of a problem. We have a fully-equipped mechanics truck and parts and tools vans that stay with the job until it is completed. We’re pretty nimble when it comes to repairs. “We make a lot of the parts for our grinding equipment and for the trucks and other equipment, we go to the local vendors,” he added. “It’s mostly a necessity because it takes time to get those kinds of parts and it makes sense from both from an economical issue and a time constraint to make the parts in our shop.” CEG

Sennebogen 718 ‘Force Multiplier’ Crushes Workload Jason R. Porter has been attacking his work days lately by getting away from the desk and linking back up with his crews in the field conducting tree removal operations. Treeworks Inc. a TCIA accredited company based in west Michigan, took delivery of a new Sennebogen 718 in October of 2019. Like many tree care company owners, brothers Jason, Zach and Luke Porter started young, working with their father in the late 80’s and continue to work together until this day. “Dad trained us with sweat equity and will power. We worked brutally hard. And to this day, hardly a moment goes by on the work site that I don’t appreciate all the new types of equipment we have, and that have been introduced to our industry,” Jason said. For Jason, the last several years has taken him out of the field from the craft he enjoys and more into an administrative role, managing the company of 14 precise hydraulic system gives him staff. It is a familiar the “feel” and control to operate with path in the industry. surgical precision. “I desperately “You have to be a tree guy,” he wanted to get back cautions. “Aerial experience [buckinto the woods with et truck and climbing], combined the crews and parwith equipment operator experiticipate in producence are invaluable when you are tive tree work, and The Sennebogen 718 contin- working with a Sennebogen 718. With the Sennebogen 718, Porter disman“We run four crews, and the Sennebogen tles trees, stacks the wood, and feeds the is a crew unto itself,” said Porter. “A large chipper from the comfort of an air-cushion percentage of our workload is an ideal fit for seat in a climate-controlled cab. this machine. Palmer, a champion tree climber and safety instructor. Palmer invited Porter to a demo day at Sennebogen's head office in Stanley, N.C., where he’d seen the machine going through the paces with operator Rob Frost. “Rob is a tree guy. We have very similar work history. We speak the same language. I knew Rob was presenting the 718 capabilities based on a wealth of actual experience. A spec sheet or salesman can’t do that,” Porter said. “Absolutely Worth It” At the demo, the features to really get Porter’s attention was the maneuverability of the saw head, combined with the telescoping reach and amazing lift capacity. “I immediately saw the value of the machine and began to lament to myself about all the jobs we had suffered through that the Sennebogen 718 could have solved. I knew immediately the machine was a fit for our business going forward.” And now with over 500 hours of operating time in the 718, Porter likes the economics as well. “I can say confidently that the Sennebogen production on our jobs has consistently been equal to two bucket truck crews. For us, that
would be equivalent to two bucket trucks, two track loaders, and four guys. Add up the operating costs of those four pieces of equipment and crew members, it’s a ton. The Sennebogen 718 is absolutely worth it. “It is just stunning how much material you can efficiently move onsite. And it is often less impact to the site and less stress on other machines like track loaders. Many trees barely touch the ground, but go directly into the whole tree chipper. And if you are stockpiling trees and it comes time to chip, you elevate the cab and look down on the pile and into the chipper instead of directly into a big stack of brush. It is a great additional feature that I have grown to appreciate”. Ease, Comfort Porter returns to the ease and capability the 718 brings to his trade. “Think of poor weather conditions, working along a road, in waterfilled ditches full of cattails, mud, and slopes. We used to do that type of work by hand cutting, driving loaders in those areas, over stumps, and pulling material out with a tagline or whatever we could think of just to complete the task. Some of the work can be pretty rough. The Sennebogen takes a task that can be awful and turn it into an enjoyable, successful project. “In March we completed 2 miles of road clearing that would have taken twice the time, and twice the manpower with our old methods. With the 718 we had it done in record time, and nobody broke a sweat,” Porter said. “On another municipal job removing 50 dangerous trees along city streets, the Sennebogen was able to complete 48 of them. And one of the trees was a massive 60+ inch, multi-stem Silver Maple. The crown of this tree arched over the road, utilities and a house. It was late in the day and I closed the street and sent most everyone home so I could focus on just this one technical tree removal. This tree would typically be most of the day for 3 guys and a bucket truck. I had it safely and neatly staged on the ground in about 50 minutes.” “And the thing is, it was fun.” For more information, visit www.sennebogen-na.com.

Remu CR 1100 Crushing Bucket Crushes Demolition Waste All around the world the use of secondary materials is increasing, supporting the circular economy and the efficiency of material usage. Remu’s new crushing bucket, the CR 1100, is designed to decrease the volume of most common materials from demolition sites including tiles, concrete, drywall and asphalt, according to the manufacturer. The operational principles of the CR 1100 are based on high torque and a slow rotating crushing drum that is powered by two direct drive motors that produce a maximum cutting force of 172kN (38500 ft lbf). When material hardness is less than 25 Mpa, the performance of the crushing bucket with a rotating drum is higher than those with the technology of a jaw crusher, according to the manufacturer. The CR 1100 crusher can be operated with a 25 to 40 ton excavator and will process one bucket load (1.1 cu. yd. [1 cu m]) of volume in approximately 1.5 minutes. This means the total processing capacity is 52 cu. yds. (40 cu m) per hour. “According to our tests the bucket performs well with mixed demolition waste including regular concrete, steel, wood, plastic, etc. Highstrength concrete and hard stones like granite are still out of our range,” Jussi Saari, leading engineer of REMU, said. For more information, visit www.remu.fi.

Cat MH3040 Material Handler Cuts Fuel By Up to 25 Percent Delivering the power and reliability required for the most demanding material handling applications in scrap and millyard operations, the new Cat MH3040 builds on the successful legacy of the M325D L MH model. The boom, sticks and other high-stress areas feature thick, multiplate fabrications, castings and forgings to withstand wear and deliver years of durable operation. Specially designed mountings on the upper frame support the new heavy-duty cab. The material handler’s new 202-hp (151kW) Cat C7.1 engine meets stringent U.S. EPA Tier IV Final emission standards with an aftertreatment system that requires no maintenance or downtime. New Smart Mode operation automatically matches engine and hydraulic power to working conditions to reduce fuel consumption, while Power Mode constantly provides maximum power to optimize productivity. The fuel-efficient engine can run up to B20 biodiesel and offers up to 25 percent lower fuel consumption than the M325D L MH, according to the manufacturer. Offering a 12 percent faster swing speed, the MH3040 reduces cycle times and allows operators to move more material in the same amount of time. The advanced hydraulic system features valve priority to direct pressure and flow to where it’s needed and delivers the optimum balance of power, efficiency and load control. The handler’s new heavy lift mode boosts lifting capacities and improves controllability. Its auto warm-up features reduce the time it takes for hydraulic oil warming in cold temperatures to prolong component life.
The MH3040’s larger premium cab design includes sound suppression to reduce operating noise levels inside the cab. Smaller cab pillars combined with large tempered windows deliver enhanced allaround visibility.

Attachments’ Critical Role in Day-to-Day Productivity Attachments play a critical role in the day-to-day productivity of contractors who operate crawler or wheel excavators. Beyond traditional excavator buckets, some contractors who work on everyday excavating and grading tasks add a hydraulic quick coupler to their excavators. A hydraulic quick coupler allows the excavator operator to easily change attachments without leaving the excavator cab. If the excavator operator can easily change buckets, the operator is more likely to use the proper size for trenching applications, ensuring the trench is at the optimal width. A common attachment used in construction, particularly in land clearing, site development and demolition is a thumb, also known as a hydraulic clamp. The excavator operator can combine the
thumb with a bucket to grab, lift and dump materials. For example, a contractor who is clearing land for a new development can load organic debris in a grinder to be processed. Doosan excavators come with a hydraulic flow control to make it easier for operators to ensure they are using the proper flow amount for the corresponding attachment. From a dial on the excavator’s control console, the excavator operator can change the auxiliary hydraulic flow rate for one-way flow attachments (e.g. breaker) or two-way flow attachments (e.g. thumb). A switch on the excavator’s control panel allows operators to switch one-way or two-way hydraulic flow for simplicity. Attachments such as a thumb help excavator operators work more efficiently because they can
Attachments such as a thumb help excavator operators work more efficiently because they can do more than dig with the machine. The bucket and thumb attachment combination enable the operator to grab objects, lift them and load them into a truck, for example.

do more than dig with the machine. The bucket and thumb attachment combination enable the operator to grab objects, lift them and load them into a truck, for example. When it comes to excavator attachment technology, there is a lot of work being done today with rotating and tilting accessories for use with excavators. Accessories like these help excavator operators be more versatile with their machines and enable them to work more efficiently because they may not need to reposition the machine as often. Some excavator manufacturers provide the necessary hydraulic piping to the end of the arm to allow for easy connections
between the machine and the attachment. Operators inside the excavator cab have precise control of the attachments, using the machine’s joystick controls. Minnesota contractor Matt Quinnell of Advanced Wall Systems pairs a Doosan crawler excavator with a hydraulic rotating grapple to lift, rotate and place boulders to build elaborate retaining walls. “I can pick up rocks that are 11 or 12 tons, even with our big grapple on the end of the arm,” Quinnell said. “The Doosan machines have enough power to manipulate the rocks. Stellar Industries Celebrates 30 Years of Innovation
Stellar Industries Inc. celebrated its 30th anniversary on May 9.
Stellar Industries Inc. celebrated its 30th anniversary on May 9. While the world continues to change daily, the Iowa-based manufacturer took a moment to recognize three decades of work truck innovation designed to power customer productivity. Stellar was founded in 1990 in Garner, Iowa, by three ambitious entrepreneurs: Francis Zrostlik, Jim Vlaanderen and Gary Bomstad. Stellar began as the first United States corporation to design and manufacture a domestic hydraulic hooklift hoist. Since its inception, Stellar has added the design and manufacture of numerous products for construction, waste, mining and many more work truck industries. Other products include mechanics trucks, service cranes, mobile drawer systems, commercial tire service trucks, lube systems and fuel trailers. Through the participation in association-sponsored events;
hosting equipment training classes; product design; and valuing customer partnership, Stellar has become a well-known name within the industries it serves. From a small-town company with big dreams to a bigtime manufacturer with grass-roots values, Stellar is proud to be a leader in innovation and industry standards after 30 years. Although they may not have been able to gather in celebration this year, Stellar Industries employees spent the week celebrating with their team and community through videos, photos and trivia on their social media channels. “Stellar Industries is proud to have been founded as an entrepreneurial start-up using the knowhow of dedicated north Iowans to build the strong company that exists today,” said Dave Zrostlik, president of Stellar Industries. “Our transition to a majority ESOP company over these 30

Association Leaders Urge Govt. to Invest in Infrastructure BILL from page 28
country through the investment of $100 billion to promote competition for broadband internet infrastructure in unserved and underserved communities. Priority would be given to communities with persistent poverty. The legislation would get children connected to remote learning, closes broadband adoption and digital skills gaps and enhances payment support for low-income households and the recently unemployed. It would invest $30 billion to upgrade hospitals to increase capacity and strengthen care, help community health centers respond to COVID-19 and future public health emergencies, improve clinical laboratory infrastructure, support the Indian Health Service’s infrastructure, and increase capacity for community-based care. It would invest $25 billion in the U.S. Postal Service to modernize infrastructure and operations, including a zero emissions postal vehicle fleet, processing equipment and other goods. It would also incentivize the development of wind and solar on public lands and build a workforce for offshore wind. Finally, the funding package would promote investments in communities by spurring private investment through the tax
code, through a revitalized Build America Bonds program, expansions of Private Activity Bonds, and significant enhancements to the New Markets Tax Credit and the Rehabilitation Tax Credit, according to the committee’s statement. Construction Benefits “Major investment in infrastructure would help to restart the economy by directly sustaining and creating millions of jobs for American workers, said Walter of the Center for American Progress. “These workers would jump-start growth in other sectors by spending their new earnings in their communities, even during this time of social distancing — for example, at local stores and restaurants. She believes this would then signal private companies to begin hiring and investing in capital projects. “Federal policymakers must act now to ensure that state and local governments, which oversee most infrastructure, are able to get new projects moving forward as soon as it is safe for everyone to go back to work, she stressed. Some national transportation groups, such as the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials
(AASHTO), believe the bill lacks bipartisan support and will die in the Senate. Jim Tymon, AASHTO executive director, expressed disappointment that both the surface transportation reauthorization bill and larger infrastructure package are partisan in nature. He noted that fiscal relief for state DOTs facing challenging financial situation due to COVID-19 is welcome, but in many cases the bill also creates or increases administrative burdens for states. He also pointed out that the STARTER Act, introduced by the committee’s Republican minority on June 17, “focuses on formula funding programs, streamlining project delivery and ensuring state flexibility — all principles adopted by the AASHTO board of directors. Unfortunately, these critical principles are absent in the Move Forward Act, Tymon said. Construction Industry: Get It Done Dave Bauer, ARTBA president and CEO, worries “the clock is ticking on the surface transportation reauthorization, which expires in September. “There are about 100 days to get a reauthorization bill done. Achieving that goal
will require reconciliation between the House and Senate and the type of bipartisan consensus that has been hallmark of federal transportation law for the past 30 years,â€? he said. Bauer urged the House and Senate to complete action quickly on their respective bills to protect transportation infrastructure, while Sandherr of AGC likes the broad laundry list of programs included in the Democrats’ version. He believes the bill will support demand across many different construction sectors, helping offset expected declines in private sector activity. “There is a lot to this bill, and there are details in the proposal that must be improved as the measure works its way through the legislative process. Among those is the need to identify additional, sustainable, long-term funding for future infrastructure improvements. However, we support the goal of rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure, restoring demand for construction and reinvigorating our economy,â€? Sandherr said. “That is why we are eager to work with both parties and the Trump administration to improve this proposal, with the goal of ultimately enacting a measure that helps rebuild America.â€?  CEG

Brent Scarbrough & Co. Leads 19-Acre Landclearing Project in Dallas, Ga. SCARBROUGH from page 12
A total of eight or nine SANY machines had been on-andoff of this job site at any given time, usually three or four SANY excavators at a time. When the process of crushing and screening of rock was being done, a pair of SANY excavators — a 235 and a 335 — were in constant use. While on the job during the twomonth crushing period, the duo did a good job of keeping the crushers loaded, said Lane. Brent Scarbrough & Co. services its own equipment and has its own machine service division. “A service request is just a few taps away on an iPad for mechanics to come out to the site and do all the service work. About 90 percent of the service work for the machines can be done at the job. With any major work needed, a machine is loaded up and taken to the shop. If specialty work is required, SANY or their dealer will come out and do whatever’s needed. Serviceability of the machines is similar to all other machines on the site and the parts are easily sourced as well,” Lane said. “Other than minor issues like hydraulic hose repairs, which happen on all machines, the SANY products have performed flawlessly at this job site and have worked quite well for me on other job sites as well. The SANYs here in Dallas will soon be loaded up and sent to downtown Atlanta for a clearing project A SANY SY335 C works next to a highway in Dallas, Ga., at a clearing site for a residential, commercial and office for Brent Scarbrough & Co. properties.”
including back filling for curb and gutter, digging for sidewalks, backfilling parking area islands and small pipework. Lane said since it’s a smaller and lighter machine, crews can get around on the asphalt easier than the big machines, even with the metal tracks. As the final stage of the project was under way, a SANY 235C LC, one of the oldest SANY machines in the fleet, was hauled to the job site for loading off-road and over the road trucks, and was actually a machine swap out for a SANY 235 with thumb that was needed on another job site.
A SANY SY235C LC excavator is used for loading off-road and over-the-road dumps on the site.
