Crews from Archer Western Contractors LLC began work in CEG CORRESPONDENT January 2017 on the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) $58 million Jones Branch Connector project that will connect Jones Branch Drive to Route 123 (0.5-mi.) in Northern Virginia’s Fairfax County. The plan is to partially open the road to traffic in late 2018, with final completion expected in late 2019. “This project, in cooperation with Fairfax County, will provide an important new link to Route 123 over the Capital Beltway [I-495] for commuters and visitors to Tysons,” according to the project web page. “The link will improve local traffic and access for drivers, as well as provide a vital option for area bicyclists and pedestrians.” The project includes: a new roadway from the interchange of the I-495 express lanes and Jones Branch Drive to Scotts Crossing Road; improvement along the access road from Jones Branch Drive to the express lanes, as well as along Scotts Crossing Road; two travel lanes and on-street bike lanes in each direction; three bridges over the I-495 express and general-purpose lanes; eight- to 12-ft. wide lighted sidewalks; landscaping and other streetscape amenities; and a wide, raised median to accommodate the future transit. “By providing an alternate route across the Beltway and linking the Tysons East and Central areas, the Connector is expected to relieve traffic along Route 123, at the I-495 interchange and at other congested intersections,” the web page said. “The road is expected to carry more than 32,000 vehicles per day by 2040.” Fairfax County has been planning this project since 2011. “There can be no direct comparison of drivers’ experiences before and after the project as it
Site work is underway south of Tampa on a new $50 million project at MacDill Air Force Base designed to host more than two dozen of the U.S. Army’s Black Hawk and Apache helicopters. The work will include building a 92,000-sq.-ft. Aviation Support Facility that will serve the Army Reserve Aviation Command. When completed in October 2019, the new center will become a work place for more than 300 military and civilian personnel from the A and F Companies of the Army’s 5th Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment. With them will come 23 UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters — all relocating to the base from the St. Petersburg/Clearwater International Airport, just a few miles away across Old Tampa Bay. The heavyduty and reliable aircrafts are used for medical evacuation and battlefield transport. In addition, an unannounced number of AH-64 Apache attack helicopters will also be housed at the new Aviation Support Center. Hensel Phelps, the large general contractor with many high-profile projects across the country, is the lead builder on the 52-acre MacDill AFB job. The
