Started in February 2017, Archer Western Construction LLC is currently in its second year of work on the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) $89.5 million multi-year project to enhance 6.285-mi. of highway (six lanes in each direction) along SR 9A/I-95 from NW 29 Street to NW 131 Street in Miami-Dade County. The project, funded both federally and by the state, is expected to be completed in summer 2020. The work will replace the concrete road surface on northbound and southbound SR 9A/I-95 from NW 29 Street to NW 79 Street; rehabilitate bridge joints; enhance drainage along the project corridor; asphalt pave ramps at NW 79 Street and NW 69 Street; install new signage, lighting, lane striping and intelligent transportation systems such as cameras, vehicle sensors and overhead electronic message boards; and
The work includes the removal and reconstruction of 284,000 sq. yds. of concrete pavement.
construct five emergency stopping sites (ESS) in the median on SR 9A/I-95 between NW 62 Street and NW 131 Street. There will be three ESS sites in the northbound direction and two in the southern direction. Recently the Department of Veterans Affairs announced that it will use $685 million in funding from Congress to fund several State Veterans Home construction projects through the VA State Veterans Home Construction Grant Program. The new funding can be used where needed for repairs, renovation or new construction and is part of an Omnibus Bill that represents the largest allocation to the more than 50-year-old State Veterans Home Construction Grant Program; funding for the
program has averaged $94 million over the last five years. The State Veterans Home Construction Grant Program provides up to 65 percent of the cost to build and renovate facilities. “This program has been operating with a backlog of applications for construction projects,” said VA Acting Secretary Robert Wilkie. “This new allocation will let us fund projects on our priority list, many of which have been waiting for years. We thank Congress for its commitment and support of

OSHA Issues Direct Final Rule Revising Beryllium Standard The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a direct final rule (DFR) clarifying aspects of the beryllium standard for general industry as it applies to processes, operations or areas where workers may be exposed to materials containing less than 0.1 percent beryllium by weight. The DFR clarifies the definitions of Beryllium Work Area, emergency, dermal contact and beryllium contamination. It also clarifies provisions for disposal and recycling, and provisions that the agency intends to apply only where skin can be exposed to materials containing at least 0.1 percent beryllium by weight. onstruction Equipment Guide joined equipment companies from all over the world in Paris April 23 to 28 for Intermat 2018. The expo, which occurs every three years, saw 183,000 visitors from 167 countries as contractors, consultancies, rental companies, distributors, importers and more came together to see the latest industry innovations. Approximately 1,500 exhibitors displayed industry equipment and solutions across four key sectors, including earthmoving and demolition; roads, minerals and foundations; buildings and concrete; and lifting, handling and transportation. Events occurred continuously throughout the week and included demonstrations, press conferences and informative sessions from many manufacturers.

Steel Unlimited Motto: ‘Quality Is Our Only Product’ “Quality Is Our Only Product.” That was the founding motto for Steel Unlimited in 1996 and it remains the overarching principle today. This approach has been so successful that the company continues to be on a winning streak that has led to repeated growth and expansion. Since Mike Frabotta, president, and Dave Sunde, vice president, founded Steel Unlimited Inc. on Feb. 14, 1996, with a modest facility in Riverside, Calif., customer satisfaction has been their driving force and it has fueled astounding growth. Significant Expansion, Growth Within two years from the company’s founding, that force led Frabotta and Sunde to develop and purchase their first location at 452 W. Valley Blvd., Rialto, Calif. — a 54,000-sq ft. facility focused on steel processing and attachments. Around the same time in 1998, the next expansion involved the company’s World’s Best Wear Parts division, which provides replacement wear parts — essential for professional grinding operations. This division today constantly evolves to meet various industry needs for the recycling, wood-waste, biomass, landscaping, landfill, land clearing, composting, asphalt shingle recycling and waste processing systems. Within eight years of opening, Steel Unlimited created its SUI Water Well division, which produces quality fabricated-steel pump housings, as well as surface plates, steel pipes, columns and barrels needed for municipalities, agricultural and construction industries Steel Unlimited’s mining division opened in 2011. This division welds and repairs heavy equip-
ment, rebuilds large attachments, in addition to supplying steel plate products and ground engaging tools. With a staff at 120 and a growing customer base, Steel Unlimited was quickly outgrowing its Rialto location. To shorten lead time for its customers, Steel Unlimited expanded again in 2014 and opened a new corporate headquarters at 3200 Myers St., Riverside, Calif. Millions of dollars were spent renovating and redesigning this facility outfitted with new machinery, new equipment, a quality control division, production division, increased engineering capabilities and a rapidly growing sales department. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) unveiled a memorial on April 27, 2018, to honor the men and women who have given their lives in service to SCDOT and the state of South Carolina. Adorned with names dating back to the 1920s, the SCDOT Workers Memorial was unveiled during a ceremony in front of SCDOT Headquarters at 955 Park St., in Columbia. Gov. Henry McMaster, Secretary of Transportation Christy Hall and SCDOT Commission Chairman Ben H. Davis Jr. were among the speakers. “Governor McMaster, thank you for being here today as it clearly shows just how much you care for the people of South Carolina and your appreciation for the sacrifices that are made in the line of duty to our great state,” Hall said during his speech. Hall also told families of fallen employees: “Just know that we are here today to wrap our arms around you. I’ve got your back. We’re family.” The memorial honors SCDOT employees killed while working on the highways as well as those who died on the job from natural causes. During the ceremony, each of the 83 names was read aloud and a bell was rung after each name. Leland Colvin, SCDOT deputy secretary of engineering, felt moved by the hundreds of people who attended the ceremony. “I am honestly overwhelmed by the show of support from all of the families, friends, guests and employees of SCDOT that are gathered here with us today,” Colvin said. Robert Webb joined Hall and McMaster to lay a wreath at the memorial. Webb, an employee in SCDOT’s traffic engineering division, lost his father, Edsel C. Webb on Nov. 17, 1969. Webb was an employee in the SCDOT Greenville maintenance office at the time of this death. IROCK Initial Setup Saves Time, Increases Productivity In a recent visit to a demolition project in Smyrna, Ga., CEG found Matt Ragsdale of Southern Demolition and Environmental based in Atlanta, Ga. hard at work clearing concrete and asphalt and crushing it on site. One of his prime equipment dealers, Chuck Spooner of Central Atlanta Tractor in Austell, Ga., was at the site and had brought a new IROCK crusher for a short-term rental. This was the first time Ragsdale had tried an IROCK machine, as he had always used another make of crushing machine. Interestingly, when it comes to crushing and screening equipment needs, Ragsdale doesn’t buy, he rents. To him, it’s a simple concept. When you only need a crusher three or four times a year, it is much more costeffective to rent, so he simply does not buy these types of machines. The other crushers Ragsdale rented in the past did the job for him, but “little differences” on the IROCK machine really set it
apart. “Some of the built-in features make it more user-friendly, and the controls seem more intuitive than the other crushers I’ve used in the past,” said Ragsdale. “This machine has a good combination of both touch screen and lever controls,” added Ragsdale. “The others I’ve used were all touch screen but a bit more temperamental. Controls are laid out quite well on the IROCK and actually have pictures to show you exactly what you want it to do. You look at a picture, pull a lever and it will do exactly what you want. It’s that easy.” Ragsdale also named easy and quick setup as a perk of the IROCK. “With less time for setup and easier operation we have more time for production” Ragsdale explained. “Less setup [and] less glitches make this a more productive machine. It’s just easier to operate in my opinion. This machine incorporates four hydraulic legs to balance and level, whereas

The particular job site that the IROCK was tackling was a quick turn-around job where Southern Demolition was in the role of subcontractor for demolition of concrete and asphalt. The material being crushed was from old driveways, parking lots, foundations, slabs, etc. and was quickly needed on site for fill. The IROCK was a big help to get this job done. The main thing that brought Ragsdale to the IROCK line was his relationship with Central Atlanta Tractor, a dealer that he has rented and purchased machines from for quite some time. “Chuck [Spooner] had been on one of my job sites where I had rented another brand of crusher,” said Ragsdale. “When he recently started in the crushing and screening equipment business, he asked if I would try the IROCK machines. Of course I said sure, I’ll give it a try. I’m happy with the product, and it’s been a good choice. “Once it’s up and running, the productivity of this machine is probably the same as others, but the initial setup saves time and that’s where it becomes more productive. The subcontractors on this project include: Traffic Management Systems, Ranger, Traffic Control Products, Shelby Erectors, Bob’s Barricades, Amroad, Vacvision and Badger Daylighting. “We discuss upcoming schedules daily with our subcontractors,” said Fauls. “We are utilizing temporary barrier wall where feasible and truck mounted attenuators to protect the workers from motorists. Offduty police officers are also placed at strategic locations throughout the project to alert motorists of the workers.” The work will see the removal and reconstruction of 284,000 sq. yds. of concrete pavement as well as the sawing and sealing of 408,000 linear ft. of concrete joints. “Our concrete pavement production rate is 60 cubic yards per night per-crew,” said Fauls. “We are recycling all concrete and soils removed from the project. Archer Western, as a member of the Walsh Group, has a commitment to be a green builder.” Archer Western is using a Cat 325 and a

Yanmar America’s construction equipment division announced the new industry standard for compact excavator factory warranties. Effective April 1, 2018, Yanmar will implement a 4-year / 4,000-hour warranty for all of its compact excavators. This new warranty covers all models ranging from its smallest, SV08; all six of its zero tail swing excavators from the ViO25 to the ViO80; and its largest compact excavator, the SV100. Jeff Pate, national sales manager of Yanmar America’s construction equipment division said, “We are not just setting the bar high. We are setting a new industry standard. I believe Yanmar makes the most reliable compact excavators in the industry and we plan to prove it to the consumer. The new 4 year / 4,000-hour warranty is not extended ‘coverage,’ and will not be administered by a third party, as many other manufacturers
offer.
