Skanska Leader Sees Work as Service to Greater Community By Patricia O’Brien CEG CORRESPONDENT

Throughout her childhood, Anita Nelson watched family members serve their community in a variety of ways. They were teachers, coaches and municipal employees and supported businesses through the local Chamber of Commerce. Inspired to make an impact in her community, she set out for a career in politics. When that didn’t go as planned, Nelson turned to what some people would view as an unlikely career of service — the construction industry. “I wanted to make an impact,” said Nelson, who has turned her passion for building into an impressive 20-year career with some of the nation’s largest firms. “Ultimately, I had a real interest in the built environment. My hometown had a waterfront redevelopment project that significantly benefited the area, which drew my interest. That’s how I got into construction as a field. I applied for marketing jobs in real estate, construction and architecture. Suddenly, I was in the construction industry.” In 2019, Nelson joined Skanska USA Building as its chief strategy officer. As part of the senior leadership team for building operations, Nelson develops long-term business planning efforts based on emerging trends and harnessing market data and analysis to ensure the resiliency, viability and sustainability of the business. She also is a member of the Skanska Women’s Network, an internal group focused on supporting women in the company and across the industry. In recognition of her dedication, outstanding technical ability and advocacy for women in construction, Nelson has accumulated several industry-wide awards, including Building Design + Construction’s 40 Under 40 2019 list and Professional Women in Construction’s 2018 20 Under 40 Outstanding Women in Construction Award. Nelson has established herself as an advocate for women in construction, serving on the board of the Women’s Builder’s Council from 2017 to 2019, where she hosted Women Build New York, an event focused on tackling issues around inclusion and creating a culture of diversity within the industry. “It’s been wonderful to be at Skanska,” she said. “We’re doing a lot of things that have an amazing impact on the world. Construction for me is a way to make tangible and lasting improvements to everything around you.” Nelson admits her career in construction wouldn’t have taken the path

it has if it weren’t for her determination and the support of mentors along the way. “I’ve gotten a ton of opportunities in my career because I was willing to take risks,” she said. “I’ve also had leaders who provided sponsorship and great bosses who were willing to let me fly and move on to work for others. I’m forever grateful for that. Those individuals created a safe place for me to work and a safe place to take a risk. I always knew somebody had my back, and that makes all the difference.” Nelson entered the construction industry with no relevant experience. Not only was she inexperienced, young and a woman, she was sometimes viewed as unqualified. there,” she said. “At that point in the industry, women were relegated to administrative functions. I ordered a lot of lunches. I took a lot of meeting minutes. I made a lot of copies.” Those risks Nelson mentioned? Perhaps the biggest risk of her career came very early on. “I started in marketing, writing proposals to win work. I had an opportunity to be a contract analyst in Las Vegas for, at the time, the largest privately funded project in U.S. history since the Hoover Dam. Working on that project taught me nearly everything I know.” Her willingness to roll up her sleeves to do whatever was needed caught her colleagues’ attention. “I was thrown into a lot of rooms because they didn’t quite know what to do

with me and my skillset. Eventually, I began creating the client’s board presentations on the progress of construction. It was a seemingly administrative thing, but it was important. I became the historian on this project in a way that didn’t feel ‘less than.’ This was a huge and rare opportunity. I sat between titans of the industry at quarterly meetings where negotiations and discussions were happening between these major firms. Then, I was operating a cost model for this $9 billion project. It put me in a position where I could be successful.” Nelson readily admits it wasn’t just her drive or being in the right place at the right time that led to this opportunity. Her success has a lot to do with the help of others. “The only reason this happened was because I had allies and managers who put me in a position where I could be successful. People gave me a range of unique opportunities in that world, which showed off my talent and allowed me to learn. I had the privilege and honor of being on that project with some amazing leaders.” Her advice to young women in the construction industry? “It’s important for people to always ask, ‘What else can I do?’ I had to prove myself but having someone to answer that question and give me guidance was so helpful. People are often hesitant to ask, but it’s about advocating for yourself with those who can and are willing to help you. Find people who are going to be on your board and help you out. I’ve never been afraid to speak up and ask questions, and this has served me well.”  CEG

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas dealt a blow to the Biden administration’s efforts to delay and rescind the Trump administration’s 2021 independent contractor final rule in a decision applauded by Associated Builders and Contractors, which had sued to block those actions. Under the court’s decision, the ABC-supported rule went into effect as scheduled on March 8, 2021, and remains in effect. “The independent contractor final rule brings much-needed clarity and guidance to the proper classification of contractors under the Fair Labor Standards Act,” said Ben Brubeck, ABC vice president of regulatory, labor and state affairs. “For too long, businesses and contractors who want to remain independent have been subjected to burdensome lawsuits and inconsistent court rulings under the FLSA. The U.S. Department of Labor’s improper delay and withdrawal of the independent contractor rule did nothing to address the very real problems confronting millions of contractors who have made the choice to remain independent. “This decision will provide much-needed clarity for small businesses and the entire construction industry,” said Brubeck. “Independent contractors are an essential lifeline to the construction industry, and the Trump-era independent contractor rule will ensure these workers and their clients can continue to thrive and play an important role in economic growth.” On May 5, 2021, the DOL announced the withdrawal — effective May 6, 2021 — of the Trump-era independent contractor final rule. On May 14, 2021, ABC, the ABC Southeast Texas Chapter, the Coalition for Workforce Innovation and the Financial Services Institute filed an amended complaint challenging the DOL’s unlawful withdrawal of the independent contractor rule, a hasty and unjustified action that violated the Administrative Procedure Act, compounding a violation that began when the DOL improperly delayed the effective date of the rule in March 2021. “Texas employs more construction workers than any other state in the country,” said Kimberly Bernard, president of the ABC Southeast Texas Chapter. “This is welcome news for our industry and can help create regulatory certainty for legitimate independent contractors and stakeholders.” “The withdrawal of the duly finalized economic realities test was both procedurally and substantively defective, and the coalition is pleased it has been vacated as a matter of law,” said the Coalition for Workforce Innovation in a statement. “The DOL’s actions undermined the very independent workers they purported to protect. CWI believes the updated economic realities test appropriately reflects the modern economy and looks forward to working with the DOL to further support independent workers and the choices they make for themselves, their families and their livelihoods.” For more information, visit www.abc.org. 

MSU Students of Architecture, Construction Science Collaborate Sixteen teams of Mississippi State University (MSU) architecture and building construction science students have spent recent weeks learning to work together as design professionals for their spring collaborative studio project, and their work is to the benefit of the Starkville Area Habitat for Humanity. A partnership between the School of Architecture and the Building Construction Science program at MSU’s College of Architecture, Art and Design, the joint project is sponsored by a PCI Foundation Studio grant to teach students the necessity of multidisciplinary cooperation in designing building projects. The foundation is a national program that has made education grants to 20 schools since 2001. It recognizes that each university has its own unique focus and approach to teaching precast concrete design, fabrication, or construction, according to the Illinois-based organization.

Teams of five students at MSU — each with three architecture and two building construction science students — have designed housing plans for the local Habitat for Humanity chapter, which builds affordable housing for low-income families. Their designs may see implementation on an existing local site owned by the organization. The MSU students also have submitted their projects to the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture 2022 Habitat Design Competition, which required them to create a climate-positive design with precast concrete as the primary building material. Teams recently presented their designs to judges from both the Starkville Area Habitat for Humanity and the PCI Foundation. Students Learned to Work in ‘Real World’ Situations Alexis Gregory, an associate professor in MSU’s School of Architecture, served as the

studio coordinator. She said for many of the students, the group project was their first opportunity to collaborate with those from other disciplines, as well as design with a budget and client in mind. Gregory added that the young people learned a lot about how to design in a “real world” context and to understand other perspectives while working together. “Architecture and construction students are very different in how they approach things,” she explained. “The benefit of the studio is to have them start to learn what those differences are and how to overcome them in order to have a successful project together.” Kobe Clouthier, a junior architecture student from Garden City, Idaho, whose team received accolades for its work, said the project helped his group better understand how building projects are created in professional spaces.

“We haven’t had to work in this environment before,” he said. “We’ve always been really free with budget, and so having the budget and the materials be very specific was very real-world and helpful in that sense.” Two student teams were recognized for their outstanding work, with each individual student receiving a $100 cash award. Winners from the architecture major include Clouthier, Elaine Otts, of Beaverton, Ala., and Michael Chew, from Birmingham, Ala. The homegrown Mississippi winners were Du’Juan Brown, of Collinsville; Mary Stafford Shurden, from Drew; and Jacob Bryson, of Jackson. The building construction science winners were Colby Stalcup of Acworth, Ga.; and to three students from Mississippi: Chapman Cooper, of Columbus, Elizabeth Gallagher, from Greenwood, and Tanner Madison, of Hernando. 

Ascendum Machinery Holds Demo Days ‘22 Event On

n Locust, N.C., near Charlotte, Ascendum Machinery held its Demo Days ’22 event on May 4 and 5. Billed as its “Biggest Event of the Year,” the Demo Days gave contractors the opportunity to get behind the controls of more than 25 different machines across more than 26 acres on seven courses. Several vendor tents, food trucks and special giveaway bags to all attendees also highlighted the event. Approximately 170 customers from N.C. and S.C., as well as about 85 employees and their families could check out static equipment displays, including a Gradall excavator; a Sandvik Leopard DI650i rock drill; LeeBoy pavers, road wideners and graders, as well as Rosco products; several different Bergmann dumpers, one of which could be operated on a demo course; a SENNEBOGEN 821E material handler; K-TEC, which had a static display showing its ADT scraper

attached to the front of a Volvo artic truck; and Doosan Portable Power equipment. Among the equipment on the demonstration courses were a fully loaded Volvo wheel loader; Volvo excavators, which could be used to dig and load Volvo artic trucks; and a Volvo EC220EL excavator equipped with a Montabert hammer used to chip away at a boulder. Among the vendor tents were Benchmark Tool & Supply, which exhibited Topcon products; SITECH Horizon, which exhibited Trimble products; McCarthy Tire Company; and other manufacturers. In total, there were more than sponsors of the event. Building crews have started work on what is to become Lakeland, Fla.’s third and largest roundabout to date. The Ledger, Lakeland’s daily newspaper, reported May 3 that motorists will soon discover a new single-lane roundabout is being built at Drane Field Road and Don Emerson Drive, which is the entrance to Lakeland Linder International Airport. The existing lanes of Drane Field Road will remain open throughout construction. “The area around the airport continues to grow and we have been discussing this roundabout for some time,” Ryan Lazenby, the city’s civil engineer manager, said in a statement. “The city of Lakeland and our partners at the Florida Department of Transportation [FDOT] are eager to see the construction of this project move forward to meet the increasing demands of the roadway.” He added that the roundabout is designed to improve traffic operations, roadway safety, and act as a gateway to the Lakeland Linder International Airport/Publix Super Markets corporate campus. The project was approved by city commissioners in September 2019. Lazenby told the Ledger that the finished roundabout will be larger than a similar one near Lake Hollingsworth. As Drane Field Road (FL Route 572) is part of the state’s highway system, the circular junction must be able to handle big rigs up to 53 ft. in length. The roundabout’s design also will shift Drane Field Road slightly to the north to allow adequate space for the circle, the Lakeland news source reported. Its individual lanes will curve slightly as they approach the junction to serve as a cue to drivers. FDOT is contributing $2.2 million toward construction of the roundabout through a Joint Participating Agreement with Lakeland. The city has funded $750,000 for the project’s design, construction engineering, and inspection phases. The anticipated completion of the project is February 2023, although the Ledger noted that FDOT said that estimate may be adjusted to account for weather-related delays. 

SCDOT Awards Contract to Finish Berlin G. Myers Parkway Motorists and residents traveling in Summerville, S.C., will finally see a relief in traffic congestion on the Berlin G. Myers Parkway as construction to build the last few miles of the roadway is on the way. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) announced in an April 27 news release that it had awarded a $137 million contract to build the parkway’s third and final phase, a 3.9 mi.-long stretch, after more than 18 years of planning, permitting and engineering work. SCDOT has not yet released the name of the contractor it selected to complete the project in Summerville, located approximately 25 mi. northwest of Charleston. The state transportation agency noted that extensive interagency coordination was needed to develop a project that met all regulatory requirements and fit well into the region. Several partnerships were formed during that time to bring this final phase to

construction. South Carolina Secretary of Transportation Christy Hall said cooperation was a significant factor in bringing about the parkway’s final phase. “SCDOT is very thankful for the many partners that worked tirelessly over the years to make this project a reality,” she said in the release. “The level of cooperation and coordination on this project are unprecedented and we look forward to building this regionally significant and much needed [roadway]. In particular, I would like to thank the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for their commitment to ensuring that we deliver a great project, and to Sen. Lindsey Graham for his steadfast efforts to get the project to construction.” Roadway Expansion, Pathway Creation Part of Effort The final phase of the project consists of

constructing a new four-lane roadway and a shared-use multipurpose pathway along the Sawmill Branch Trail for bicyclists and pedestrians. In its statement to the media, SCDOT explained that the Berlin G. Myers Parkway roadwork will not only reduce traffic on Summerville’s Main Street but improve congestion throughout Dorchester County as the route connects other heavily traveled roads, including U.S. Highway 17A and Bacons Bridge Road. Officials with the county said Berlin G. Myers will serve as a bypass route, relieving pressure on other local roads. “Main Street is at its limits and cannot be extended. In addition, congestion will be relieved around Summerville High School,” noted Stephen Grant, chair of the Dorchester County Transportation Authority (DCTA). “There are many partners to thank for persevering for many years to get this project to

construction, especially the people of Summerville and Dorchester County who placed their trust in us to enhance the quality of life for our citizens.” While the project budget of $137 million is only an estimate, it is supported by $35 million in DCTA funds, $30 million in South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank (SCTIB) funds and $74 million in Charleston Area Transportation Study/SCDOT Funds. “This is an excellent example of how a focused and collaborative effort on a complicated and complex project can break through years of obstacles to provide much needed traffic relief for the citizens of our state,” said John B. White Jr., chair of the SCTIB. [The bank] appreciates the opportunity to assist the DCTA, [and the] Charleston Area Transportation Study/SCDOT Fund [to] deliver a successful project for the Summerville area.” 

The Council on Environmental Quality’s (CEQ) April 19 decision to impose new environmental regulations jeopardizes the efficiency of the transportation project delivery process and the promised outcomes of the 2021 federal infrastructure law, according to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). Completion of the federal environmental review process under the NEPA can take as long as seven years for new transportation projects, while the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) sets a goal for completing that review within two years. The reforms made to NEPA in 2020 that CEQ is unravelling were designed to reduce unnecessary delay while maintaining NEPA’s environmental safeguards. “CEQ and all other federal agencies should be focused on maximizing the IIJA’s benefits by streamlining the approval process for essential transportation projects that serve the American people,” ARTBA President and CEO David Bauer said. “Reinstating outdated regulations that require project sponsors to guess about the indirect impacts of transportation improve-

Lane Construction Lands Two-Phase $357M AFB Contract The Lane Construction Corporation, the U.S. subsidiary of Webuild Group, has been awarded a $357 million contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to rebuild a portion of Tyndall Airforce Base (AFB) that will result in more resilient infrastructure to address future climate-change challenges. The Two-Phase Design and Construction Site Development and Utilities Phases I and II contract in Panama Beach, Fla., is a design-build project that is part of a larger multi-billion AFB recovery plan taking place over the

Recently built structures, historical facilities, and infrastructure, including utilities, roads and pavement, were impacted. This contract and other programmed projects will make the base more resistant to storm damage in the future. GOMACO Introduces Savvy New Paving Technology GOMACO GP3 at work on an airport paving project at the Ankeny Regional Airport, Ankeny, Iowa.

Merriam-Webster gives the essential meaning of savvy as having practical understanding or knowledge of something, having, or showing perception, comprehension, or shrewdness, especially in practical matters. GOMACO has always been extremely savvy about concrete slipform paving and building the machines and technology needed for the highest quality pavement. GOMACO’s savvy new technology was on display at World of Concrete 2022. The GOMACO GP3 slipform paver was featured in the GOMACO booth. It has the capability of slipforming up to 30 ft. wide and is available as a two-track or four-track paver GOMACO’s engineers have advanced paver controls and automation and are introducing new intelligent valves on GOMACO’s line of equipment, including the GP3 paver. The new self-programming valves eliminate the need to set thresholds. The valves, working with the paver’s G+ control system, understands and can automatically react and self-adjust to the dynamics of the machine. Initially, the valve reacts to the machine set-up and adjusts accordingly, but the operator can make fine-tuned

sensitivity adjustments from any display at any time. GOMACO’s G+ software recognizes the change requests and immediately makes those adjustments. This allows automatic correction of the paver’s elevation, steering, pivoting, travel control, anti-slip positive traction of the tracks and more. G+ controls now incorporate GOMACO’s new vibrator monitoring system with the ability to monitor, control and diagnose each individual vibrator on the paver. The touchscreen display illustrates the performance of each vibrator. The operator can see where adjustments need to be made and can make those adjustments electronically for an instant and on-the-go response. GOMACO’s Navigator display software brought all the G+ paver accessories together for easy control and monitoring on an optional touchscreen display. It is now fully WiFi capable to allow wireless control from multiple display screens anywhere on the paver. A wireless extension allows ground personnel the ability to view and make fine-tuned adjustments to the paver’s performance and configure settings for the GSI, side bar inserters, tie bar inserters, and

power transition adjuster using any tablet or phone. Machine-to-Machine communication is now possible using the GOMACO Navigator display and G+ control. When a GOMACO paving train is at work on a project, the GP3 paver now has the ability to talk to the other GOMACO equipment on the project with a G+ control system. For example, if a GOMACO placer/spreader is at work in front of a GP3 paver, the paver and the concrete being placed in front of the paver is too low, it can tell the placer/spreader to raise its strike-off and allow more concrete to be placed. Machine-to-Machine communication introduces a new era of automation, paver intelligence and ultimate performance to GOMACO equipment. The savvy new technology is advancing throughout GOMACO’s entire line of concrete slipform paving equipment. The new self-programming valves also are being integrated into GOMACO’s full line of curb and gutter machines. Wacker Neuson Offers Its Tandem Rollers for Asphalt Wacker Neuson’s comprehensive compaction product line includes a large selection of tandem rollers for the compaction of sub-base materials and asphalt. Designed to increase productivity, while offering operator comfort, convenience and maneuverability, these rollers deliver quality compaction results in demanding conditions with sizes and features to fit large or small jobs, according to the manufacturer. “The project is a redevelopment of our south campus that will replace outdated university student housing with modern residence halls that provide students with academic and student supported spaces, extensive greenspace and exceptional dining,” said Wise. Carolina Dining will offer a new dining hub, sundry shop and Starbucks. Located adjacent to building 1, the Campus Village transportation hub will accommodate 200 vehicles, increased bus shuttles and improved pedestrian and bicycle access. Phase two will consist of two suite-style residential buildings that will be located on the current space that’s home to Bates West and Bates House. The final phase will be located on the site of the former Carolina Gardens housing community. These residential buildings will offer apartment-style living. In May 2021, state officials, campus partners and university officials gathered to mark the official start of construction on the housing complex. “The groundbreaking was a culmination of years of hard work by university administration, state and local leaders to move this project from planning into real action,” said Wise. The school will own the buildings and provide housing operations and student support. Charleston-based Greystar will build and maintain the site, with Juneau Construction overseeing the building project. “The teams from Juneau and Greystar have really minimized the noise, and provided a working environment that still allows students in nearby buildings to work and study uninterrupted,” said Wise. “From surveillance cameras, barriers and intentional rerouting of walkways for our residential population, the team has done a really great job of keeping students outside the work zone.” Wise remarked that excitement is building as crews continue to make progress. “From staff to students, Campus Village is the beginning of a new era in housing on the South Carolina campus. It will provide students with new on-campus housing options, with them in mind.” According to DJ Van Slambrook, Greystar senior director of development, the biggest obstacles on the project have centered on Covid, material delays, inflation and coordination. “Site work was complicated by unexpected utilities and working around the still-operating utility tunnel that crosses the site was a challenge.” Van Slambrook noted, “The project originally required about 34,000 cubic yards of dirt that needed to be moved within the site, and an additional 8,000 cubic yards that needed to be brought from offsite and used onsite. crete podium level, topped with five levels of metal framing and then a roof level. Building 1 also includes a basement. The exterior skin is primarily masonry, and consists of brick, cast stone and ground face block. All buildings will have a standing seam metal roof mansard with a large mechanical well in the center to conceal rooftop MEP equipment. “A precast parking garage will be constructed adjacent to Building 1,” said Van Slambrook. “The dining area has a pretty involved commercial kitchen that requires a lot of MEP coordination, due to the amount of kitchen equipment that will be installed. The only thing unique to the academic support spaces is some more involved audio-visual systems consisting of projectors, screens, speakers, etc.” Construction tasks remaining include all interior and exterior finishes, including drywall, flooring, paint, masonry, metal panels and millwork. As for unexpected issues that need to be addressed, said Van Slambrook, “It’s construction, so issues have to be resolved every single day. Coordination has probably been the single largest challenge, due to the size of the project and the number of involved parties.” Fortunately, the elements have not been too much of a problem. “Other than some rain days here and there, we have been pretty fortunate with the weather, and have avoided major impacts up to this point. Dynapac Expands Asphalt Roller Line With New CC1300VI, CC1400VI Models Dynapac North America has added two new rollers — the CC1300VI (4.3 ton) and CC1400VI (4.75 ton) — to its VI generation compact asphalt roller range. Adding newly developed double drum and combi versions of CC1300VI and CC1400VI to the already released CC1100VI and CC1200VI makes the compact asphalt roller range of 2.46 to 4.75 ton a highly demanded roller offering from the North American asphalt paving community. “Following the success, we have had with our generation VI small asphalt rollers, we have now designed the CC1300VI and CC1400VI with the same mindset, to meet the commercial and highway paving industry’s tough conditions. DPR Construction Leads 16-Story Tower in Charlotte, N.C. Charlotte, N.C., is a rapidly growing city full of both history and charm. It currently ranks as the third-fastest growing major U.S. city, but growth hasn’t only occurred over the past few years — Charlotte has been on the upswing for over a decade. South End is a particularly booming Charlotte neighborhood, home to some of the city’s best restaurants and nightlife. The Rail Trail, an 11-mi.-long public trail, runs through the area, giving runners and cyclists a great way to explore the neighborhood, and the nearby Blue Line light rail brings visitors in and out of the South End by way of public transportation. Adding even more clout to the district is the city’s newest retail and office tower, The Line. The recently completed 16-level building was designed to bring the community together and foster connection among residents and visitors. It houses 298,600 sq. ft. of office space above 304,500 sq. ft. of structured parking, along with breathtaking views of Uptown Charlotte. The ground floor includes 24,400 sq. ft. of retail, restaurants and a brewery. DPR Construction is the commercial contractor on the project, a widely respected company ranked among the top 50 general contractors in the country since 1997. DPR Construction has 27 regionally based offices across the country and three international locations. The Charlotte branch of DPR Construction performed the concrete scope of The Line, which included 25,000 cu.yds. of concrete and 4,000,000 lbs. of rebar. Unlike a traditional office building, much of

the concrete was left exposed, prompting DPR to focus heavily on a quality finish. “Our team enjoyed working through the unique elements of this project,” said Paulie Estrada, concrete superintendent of DPR Construction. “The new structure is going to create a space for the community, and visitors, to shop, unwind and see new views of the city. Building The Line didn’t always come easy, though.” Working Through Challenges To break up the 16-level structure

between parking and retail space — and add architectural appeal — a sky lounge was included on level eight. Not only did this create a unique look for The Line, but challenges, too. Starting on the ninth level, The Line includes two towers that sit on top of the sky lounge, with the tower floors extending past the face of the structure and parking deck — posing a challenge due to how the floor defies gravity. The main core of the structure, otherwise known as the shear walls, and columns were

an integral part of the structure and crucial to get right the first time. The vertical concrete elements start at ground level and extend all the way to the ninth floor. Not only are they important to the structure, but the 17-ft. shear wall is exposed in the sky lounge, creating a center piece of the structure. “It was tough to make sure we consolidated the concrete well because there was a lot of rebar inside the walls and columns,” said Estrada. “These were critical pours. The walls were very high, making it hard to look down the side of the column and be confident that we were vibrating everything to our standards.”

Choosing Right Equipment To eliminate the imperfections in the pile caps, columns and barrier walls, DPR Construction used four Stinger electric flex shaft vibrators on the job site from Minnich

The Stinger is a 14.5-lb. double-insulated universal motor that can drive the full line of Minnich vibrator shafts and heads from ¾ to 2½ in. Available in a 15-amp (115-volt) version, it offers a more compatible speed range of 10,000 to 13,000 vibrations per minute (vpm) to meet today’s concrete placement challenges. The size of the Stinger is ideal for carrying around the job site and maneuvering into small spaces, according to the manufacturer. It also has a fully adjustable harness that fits over the operator’s shoulder to help reduce strain. The unit is equipped with a durable protective frame, which extends vibrator life with urethane end caps that absorb shock while supporting easy-to-grip handles. The Minnich Stinger provides quiet operation, meeting Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) A 29 CFR 1910.95 standards. DPR was able to work efficiently and provide a quality finish on the concrete. The Stinger’s versatility was beneficial while pouring support columns and beams. “The Stinger is by far one of the most important pieces of equipment that we rely on to consolidate concrete,” Estrada said. “It helped create a beautiful center piece of exposed concrete.” Seeing Differences Estrada has been in the concrete industry for decades and immediately noticed the advantages the Stinger brings to the job site. “It’s really dependable. Before the Minnich Stinger, I was using a different brand and had problems with it day after day. I even had situations where I had to rework the concrete after the vibrator didn’t consolidate as needed. That’s why we switched to Minnich,” explained Estrada. “The Stinger has minimized issues and re-work dramatically. It works efficiently and can handle the workload we put it through day in and day out on the job. “My experience working with the Minnich team has been great, too. Tech support visited the job site and troubleshot one of the vibrator heads for us — and it was back working in no time. Lifelong Farmer Finds New Gear in Semi-Retirement America, 1898: The city of Greater, N.Y., was created; the World’s Fair opened in Omaha; the Spanish-American war was fought and finished; and the Bjork Family Farm was established near Dunbar Township, N.D. Four generations later, Brian Bjork carries out his family legacy on that same farmstead. “I never changed my address until we built a new house a few years ago,” Brian said. “Even then, our mailbox only moved about a foot.” Bjork built a new house across the street, and his daughter and her family moved into his childhood home. As his siblings peeled off one by one to become doctors and lawyers, he stayed put doing what he loves most. “I grew up on the farm, and that’s all I wanted to do,” he said. Now in his 60s, Bjork considers himself “semi-retired” still actively farming 575 acres of corn and soybeans. He has scaled back from 1,400 acres but isn’t quite ready to give up his passion, even as tasks become harder on him than before. tively controlling the loader and boom functions from his phone. “Now that I have the MaxControl system, I wouldn’t be without it,” he said. Inside Scoop Bjork grew up operating his family’s M444 Bobcat loader. Yet, he didn’t get a Bobcat loader for himself until 2003. “The M444 was better than a scoop shovel, but otherwise, I figured I had a tractor with a loader, so I didn’t need another one,” he said. An insider quickly convinced him otherwise. Living less than 10 mi. from Bobcat Company’s Gwinner factory complex (home of the Bobcat loader), Bjork knows a lot of the local factory workers, engineers and salespeople. One of his childhood friends became a prototype engineer with Bobcat Company and invited Bjork to test drive new models before they were available to the public. “After I tried the newer machines, I never looked back,” Bjork said. He purchased a high-flow S185 skid steer loader just in time for snow removal season and to revel in the luxury of a heated cab. He upgraded to a Bobcat S650 skid steer loader five years later to get more lifting power. It wasn’t until the MaxControl remote operation came out that he decided it was time to upgrade again. “The technology on the S76 loader is so awesome with the ride control, speed management, automatic throttle and more,” Bjork said. “Also, when I climb in the cab, the Bluetooth connects to my XM radio on my phone and automatically starts playing classic rock. My wife calls me a leftover hippie.” Bjork’s go-to artist of choice: Lynyrd Skynyrd. Bells and whistles aside, Bjork’s skid steer loader is an important tool in his arsenal.

“My Bobcat loader is an essential part of my daily farming operation,” he said. “I wouldn’t be without one — it’s like an extension of my own arm.” Hometown Hero In addition to having access to the newest innovations, Bjork has enjoyed other benefits to living in the heart of where Bobcat machines are made. Around that part of North Dakota, farmers and contractors are extremely brand loyal and equally excited to learn what’s new from Bobcat. He has lent out his S76 loader to his friend and local dealer for demo events, so others can experience MaxControl remote operation. One of those events took place the night before the annual Gwinner Fun Days celebration. Bjork offered to leave his loader at the dealership overnight and put it in the parade the following day. “They got a sparkle in their eye at that suggestion,” said Bjork. He then remotely drove his skid steer loader through the parade from inside the dealership pickup, following his unmanned machine. “People along the street would wave and then see there was no one in the cab. You could see the realization on their face … it was pretty cool,” he said. From childhood to semi-retirement, Bobcat has always played a key role in Bjork’s day-to-day life. And it’s a culmination of all those experiences — from farm chores to family and friends — that has made him a true believer in the brand. “Bobcat has been building these machines for more than 60 years, and they are bulletproof,” Bjork said. “The design and engineering that go into each new model is a collaboration of tried-and-true stuff. AEC Pros Focus On Driving Biz With 360-Degree Cameras The pandemic has driven the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industries to adopt new technologies in order to keep projects on track and a step ahead in an increasingly digital world. One technology being quickly adopted by this professional set are 360-degree cameras — which according to a new survey conducted by RICOH THETA are owned or used by almost half of all respondents, with 79 percent of them utilizing the cameras for work. The survey, fielded by Dynata to industry professionals, explored the usage of tech devices such as cameras, smartphones and other platforms/software commonly used by AEC professionals. Technology is playing an important role in multiple workflows across these professions with most frequent usage for project management and oversight (72 percent), building design (54 percent) and building construction (51 percent). However, despite an increasing reliance on general photography and video technology, these devices often fall short on delivering the professional’s desired results. Some key issues identified in the survey when it comes to more traditional imaging include: • Lack of high image quality (30 percent) • Cumbersome image sharing processes (28 percent) • Insufficient image capture range for properly capturing an entire space (26 percent) Addressing some of these challenges, 360-degree

cameras are compact, beginner-friendly devices with simple interfaces that can capture entire spaces with a single button press. Image quality is often quite high among quality 360-degree cameras, with some models containing sensors that capture highresolution imagery even in dim or poorly lit environments. Another common feature among recent 360 cameras is pairing with smartphones via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth that enables easier image viewing and sharing. Given these features, the survey identified that more than ¾ of respondents believe that 360degree cameras would work better for them, particularly for: • Documenting jobsite progress (57 percent) • Recording site environment (55 percent) • Sharing details/progress with colleagues (52 percent) • Sharing details/progress with clients (50 percent) “At RICOH THETA, we are continually working to innovate products that meet the needs of our core customers,” said Shinobu Fujiki, general manager of RICOH Company’s THETA Business division. “We recognize that the AEC market is ripe for 360-degree technology adoption, so we conducted this research to better understand workflows, and in turn, find solutions that help design professionals do their jobs more effectively.” For more information, visit theta360.com. 

ABC Announces 2022 Construction Workforce Awards Associated Builders and Contractors announced the winners of its annual, national Construction Workforce Awards, which includes Craft Instructor of the Year, Craft Professional of the Year and Young Professional of the Year. The winners were announced March 15, the first day of ABC Convention 2022 in San Antonio. Craft Instructor of the Year Larry Harris, electrical instructor at the Academy of Craft Training in Birmingham, Ala., is the 2022 Craft Instructor of the Year. “Larry Harris’s decades of teaching shows his dedication to his craft, the construction industry and, most importantly, his students,” said 2022 National Chair of the ABC Board of Directors Stephanie Schmidt, president, Poole Anderson Construction, State College, Pennsylvania. “His nominator said they’ve ‘not met anyone in the teaching profession who mentors and cares more about their students’ than Harris. His innovative teaching style, focus on safety and dedication to his students even after graduation makes him the epitome of a quality craft instructor.” Harris has worked in the construction industry for 45 years, including managing his own electrical business, serving as a supervisor and teaching as an instructor. He currently teaches a two-year electrical program preparing juniors and seniors in high school for a career in the electrical field at the Academy of

Craft Training. Harris has been honored as the Calhoun County Center for Technology Teacher of the Year and is a SkillsUSA Honorary Lifetime Member. He also is the technical chair of the Alabama SkillsUSA electrical construction wiring and industrial motor control contests. As Craft Instructor of the Year, Harris received a $10,000 cash prize. edge, experience and confidence to become successful electricians, leaders and mentors to the next generation. “I use my own experience as an example, having climbed the ladder from a 14-year-old working in the shop sorting materials all the way up to my current position running multiple jobs and crews. With all the new technologies that are out there and the push for renewable energy, there are far more cutting-edge career opportunities than there are people willing to fill the roles,” he said. It is also impressive that Luke spearheaded his chapter’s response to members’ needs during the pandemic.” Perry is board chair of ABC Ohio Valley and formed the chapter’s Next Gen Leaders group. New Technology Improves Asphalt Road Construction ASPHALT from page 1

What’s new in asphalt road construction, machinery and safety? Developed over years, porous pavement design, perpetual pavement and autonomous vehicles are all making headlines today as technology meets demand. Splash-Free Driving Permeable pavement, including porous types, is one of the fastest growing technologies in sustainable asphalt roadway engineering. Developed chiefly for safety advantages, porous pavement reduces splash and spray. Darlene Goehl of the Texas Transportation Institute’s materials and pavements division believes the design also improves improve visibility for drivers. “It helps avoid the hydroplaning problems you may see in wet weather,’ Goehl said in a podcast interview. “It’s actually a porous friction course.” Impervious surfaces are often the causes of stormwater runoff, according to paving information provider PavingFinder. “Porous asphalt pavement is a specialized mixture comprised of both fine and course aggregates bound together by a bituminous binder. The surface appearance of porous asphalt is similar to traditional asphalt, but it has a rougher texture.” The material is placed over a granular working platform on top of a lare stone reservoir, and the surface is made porous by building with open-graded friction coarse aggregate. “The layer under the porous asphalt has the storage capacity to hold the collected water,” explained PavingFinder. Highway engineers pour the material in a thin surface layer on conventional pavement. Rainwater sinks into the pavement surface and settles on an impermeable asphalt layer below. “Water is forced to drain off the side of the highway,” according to the organization. “Even in a driving rainstorm, splash and spray from trucks is absorbed into the pavement.” Visibility for drivers improves to the degree that crashes and fatalities can be “significantly” reduced, believes PavingFinder. Recent developments in stormwater ordinances across the country have begun to require more significant onsite stormwater infiltration and detention. And, according to the paving information organization, a primary incentive for using permeable pavement is to add a hydrological benefit to a roadway or site design. “Permeable pavement can reduce the concentration of pollutants by trapping them physically, chemically or biologically.”

Perpetual Pavements Perpetual asphalt concrete pavement is designed to last 50 years or longer without any repairs below the wearing course or surface level. The pavement typically has a multi-layered structure which resists fatigue over time, according to the Asphalt Pavement Alliance. Ralph Isenberg, director of governmental affairs for Reliable Paving, outlined in a blog post an APA research paper on the technology. The triple-layered structure resists struc-

tural damage for as long as the top surface is maintained and replaced. “While the outer surface is cared for, the rest of the pavement will not to be fully repaired or replaced for many years.” The goal of perpetual pavement is to be a deep-strength asphalt paving that resists fatigue. It does so by reducing cracking from the bottom-up, said APA. “When pavements undergo road traffic, fatigue develops from the cyclical nature and weight of the traffic. The fatigue begins as cracks at the pavement foundation. These foundational cracks then work their way up

to the higher layers of pavement.” As they infiltrate the pavement layers, cracks spread out and multiply. Over time the cracks present on the surface of the asphalt pavement. “Perpetual pavement is designed specifically to resist bottom-up fatigue cracking and structural rutting,” said APA. These two types of damage are among the worst asphalt pavement can receive. Superior to low-grade pavement exhibits rutting and cracking before their design-life is achieved. Whereas superior to high-grade traditional pavement proves it uses materials more efficiently. The pavement also reduces cyclical costs. “As long-term damage is avoided, yearly or multi-yearly-accrued damage doesn’t need to be repaired,” reported APA. Because the design is more efficient, sections of overly thick asphalt are eliminated. Reconstruction costs are eliminated, as well. Plus, delays due to maintenance occur less and as a result, maintenance costs drop. Perpetual pavement also reduces the need for non-renewable asphalts and aggregates. Driverless Vehicles Goehl of the Texas Transportation Institute said autonomous vehicles will change the way asphalt pavements are constructed. Today’s 12-ft. wide driving lanes will look different in the future. “If you look at that path where people normally drive, it tends to be on each tire about three foot wide. So, there’s some wander when you drive just naturally within the lane, that kind of distributes the weight of that car over half the lane. So about six-foot total,” she said. But designers are anticipating changes in road pavement spread to accommodate autonomous vehicle technology, said Goehl. “When you go to a self-driving car, they’re going to drive in a path similar to a train on a track. Now instead of that tire meandering over a three-foot area, it’s probably going to be stuck in about a one-foot area.” The result will be a more concentrated load on the pavement within that area, which said will change a bit in how pavement is designed in order to hold that load. The pavement “will have to be stiffer. We’re still researching how those effects can cause those problems with those vehicles.” Autonomous vehicles also are at the heart of research into keeping road workers safe. of Civil Engineers (ASCE) reported that the state utilized a grant from the Federal Highway Administration to improve work zone safety with an “autonomous impact protection vehicle.” Impact protection vehicles, driven by humans, protect construction crews from other drivers on the road who are not paying attention to the construction site or have lost control of their vehicle. A crew member will remotely control the autonomous vehicle, but no humans will be inside during shifts. “This is a great day for North Dakota to showcase its commitment to innovation,” said NDDOT Director Bill Panos in announcing the program. “This technology is one more tool that we will have available to enhance the safety of work zones in our state.” The state DOT believes the autonomous vehicle, dubbed the Autonomous Truck Mounted Attenuator (ATMA), will improve safety in work zones by removing the driver from the impact protection vehicle during normal operation. “The NDDOT remains committed to its Vision Zero initiative and our goal is to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries caused by motor vehicle crashes,” said Panos. According to ATMA developer Kratos Defense, highway workers are at especially high risk when assigned to drive an impact protection vehicle. The truck follows behind slow-moving highway maintenance vehicles as a human-driven mobile crash barrier, absorbing the impact of traffic accidentally entering the work zone. “Driving a TMA is extremely dangerous and drivers are at serious risk of lifelong injury, painful rehabilitation and even death,” said Maynard Factor, business development director of Kratos. “To eliminate this dangerous assignment, Kratos Defense developed the Autonomous TMA [ATMA] by retrofitting standard TMA vehicles with driverless technology to enable unmanned operation.” The first ATMA systems were deployed in 2017 and have since then been deployed across the United States and Europe. The unmanned vehicle operates in a multi-vehicle leader/follower configuration with a human driven highway

maintenance vehicle, the company said. In the leader/follower configuration, the system enables the maintenance vehicle, or leader, to transmit navigation data via encrypted V2V communications to the ATMA as the follower. From there, the ATMA uses the data to follow the leader, unmanned, as it travels along the route. The ATMA systems features component redundancy, an active safety system, high accuracy GPS/GPS-denied navigation, encrypted V2V communications, and multi-modal front and side-view obstacle detection, the companies added. It also includes a user interface that provides system feedback, situational awareness, multi-camera views and operator controls, according to Kratos. “These vehicles follow road crews and create a physical barrier between workers and the public that can save a life in the event of a work zone intrusion,” said Terry O’Sullivan, general president of Laborer’s International Union of North America. “Remotely operated equipment protecting the work zone could potentially eliminate deadly work zone intrusions and that is a positive step for work zone safety.” The Colorado Department of Transportation began using automated TMAs in 2017 after recording 26 incidents of motorists crashing into the vehicles over a four-year period.

Usually unoccupied when protecting a stationary work site, these vehicles have workers following alongside as paving jobs progress. CDOT began using a remote-controlled impact protection vehicle operated by a driver in another truck traveling ahead of it. If the wireless connection is lost, the driverless vehicle automatically comes to a stop. If the vehicle with the TMA is hit, there’s nobody sitting in the cab that can be injured. “People often talk about the coming job displacement of automated vehicles — well this is actually one job I want to get people out of,” said Shailen Bhatt, executive director of CDOT. “The idea that we have a truck (whose) job is to get hit, with someone sitting in it, well that doesn’t make a lot of sense.” CDOT tried out the driverless TMA on a road striping project in Fort Collins and plans to use it on other projects. The department believes the technology has the potential to improve work zone safety now and productivity in the future as automation frees up workers to take on other tasks. Bhatt believes technology “can take transportation safety to a new level and forever improve the way we work. By using self-driving technology, we’re able to take the driver out of harm’s way while still effectively shielding roadside workers.”  CEG

The 310L and 310SL backhoe loaders, available in both canopy or cab configurations, are designed to take on even the toughest of jobs and are ideal additions to any fleet. The 310SL backhoe loader delivers all the advantages of PCLS hydraulics in the 14- to 15-ft. digging-depth category, enabling operator efficiency and productivity. The 310L and 310SL are great machines for loading trucks, placing pipes, digging trenches, moving materials and tearing up asphalt, according to the manufacturer. With the low monthly payment program, operators can own various mid-size excavator models, including the 75G with the cab configuration and the 85G with the engcon tiltrotator. The 35G compact excavator model also is available in canopy or cab configurations within this year’s offers and can be purchased with the attachments and performance package, expanding job site and machine capability. Attachments included in the performance package include select auger, bucket, grapple and trencher options, promoting machine versatility and efficiency. Additional compact offerings include the 317G compact track loader, the 318G skid steer loaders and the 35G compact excavator, which is available in canopy or cab configurations. Ritchie April Market Trends Report: Truck Tractor Prices Up With its April Market Trends Report, Ritchie Bros. continues to show year over year price inflation for all major equipment categories. This month’s report includes an in depth look at Q1 (Jan to Mar) sales, broken out by manufacturer. A quick look at U.S. construction categories and its clear Ritchie Bros. sells more Caterpillar equipment than any other brand. In fact, when looking at excavator sales in the United States, the company sold three times more Cat units (370-plus) than the next manufacturer, John Deere (130plus). The April report also digs into sales of dozers, wheel loaders, articulated dump trucks, loader backhoes, multi-terrain loaders, skid steers, telehandlers, boom lifts, scissor lifts and truck tractors. “We continue to drive record-breaking demand across our various online auctions and marketplaces, including our largest-ever Montreal auction in March, huge Regional Auction Events, our week-

ly IronPlanet sales, Marketplace-E events, and Ritchie List,” said Doug Olive, senior vice president, pricing, Ritchie Bros. “Regardless of sales channel, pricing has been strong throughout the first quarter of 2022, with truck tractor prices leading the way, up 58 percent in the United States and 50 percent in Canada. Overall, all our price indexes are showing year over year price inflation, which means it’s a great time to sell.” Doug Rusch, managing director of Rouse Sales, added, “We continue to see tight supply and strong end-user demand for equipment across retail and auction markets.
