AGC Reports Employment Up in 39 States Over Last Year

Work is in its early months on a sparkling new bridge being built across the Intracoastal Waterway along the southeast North Carolina coast at Surf City. The $54 million project is intended to replace an aging swing bridge, but because of its elegant design, it also will give motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians a sweeping view of the ocean as they come into town. The Topsail Island Bridge Replacement project in Pender County began construction this past September, with a scheduled completion date of Sept. 15, 2019, according to Trevor Carroll, the NCDOT engineer keeping watch on the work. The bridge brings traffic to and from the island along N.C. Highway 50/210 south of Jacksonville and Camp LeJeune. The new span is replacing an old, 60-year-old steel truss swing bridge in dire need of replacement.

A more than $2.3 billion dollar project that will rebuild Interstate 4 through central Florida has officially passed the two-year mark of the nearly seven years slated for construction. I-4 Ultimate calls for the reconstruction of 21 mi. of roadway infrastructure from west of Kirkman Road in Orange County through Downtown Orlando, extending to the east of state Road 434 in Seminole County. “The I-4 Ultimate project is changing the landscape of central Florida,” said Loreen Bobo, P.E., Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) I-4 Ultimate construction program manager. “Not only is the project adding capacity, but the aging infrastructure is being replaced and being designed see FDOT page 76

Thirty-nine states added construction jobs between March 2016 and March 2017 while 17 states added construction jobs between February and March, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of Labor Department data. Association officials noted that contractors in most states remain busy for now but worry about not being able to find enough workers to complete projects in the future.

“Construction job gains were much less widespread in March after unseasonably mild weather boosted hiring in more states than usual in February,” said Ken Simonson, chief economist of the association. “Only Massachusetts and Texas set new records for construction employment in March, following a month in which construction employment reached alltime highs in five states.” see EMPLOYMENT page 84
