Seventy years of success didn’t just happen for Gregory Poole Equipment Company. Infrastructure Bill: Is it Enough? What Do We Really Need?

President Biden announced in April a $2 trillion plan to transform the economy with special emphasis on jobs, infrastructure and green energy. The transportation piece of the proposal would direct $621 billion to roads, bridges, public transportation, airports and electric vehicles.

Prior to the announcement, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke to a key congressional committee on March 25 and told lawmakers “they have the best chance in any of our lifetimes to make a generational investment.”

The House Transportation Committee hearing was Buttigieg’s first appearance since his confirmation. “Wise transportation investments are key to making the American Dream accessible for all, leading our global competitors in innovation, getting people and goods to where they need to be creating good jobs — jobs that are union or pay prevailing wages — and tackling our climate crisis,” Buttigieg said.

The infrastructure proposal could include approximately $400 billion to combat climate change. The administration is considering tax increases to fund the program.

Buttigieg didn’t endorse any one approach but said lawmakers had the option to rely on fees on drivers, such as the gas tax, other general tax revenue or borrowing.

“I’ve heard loud and clear from members of Congress, Republican and Democratic, that an infrastructure proposal needs to have at least a partial funding source and I know that’s a challenging conversation,” he said.

Buttigieg has made appearances to help promote the administration’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package. The kind of infrastructure package will need congressional support to make it happen.

Buttigieg has endorsed improving transit access as well. “I believe by investing in transit, transit-oriented development, and for that matter, rural main streets, in the right balance, we can support people getting to where they need to be.”

Advancing the package through the Senate will likely require the support of several Republicans.

Detractors of the plan are asking the question, “How much of the bill can really be called infrastructure?” Fortune magazine’s Jeff Colvin observed, “Infrastructure, as many people think of it, accounts for only $157 billion, or 7 percent, of the plan’s estimated cost.” He continued, “The definition of infrastructure can reasonably be expanded to include upgrading wastewater and drink-

ing water systems, expanding high-speed broadband Internet service to 100 percent of the nation, modernizing the electric grid and improving infrastructure resilience. That brings the total to $518 billion, or 24 percent of the plan’s total cost.”

federal gas tax currently stands at 18.4 cents per gallon of gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon of diesel. The tax was last raised in October 1993. The tax was not indexed for inflation, which has increased 77 percent since then. Congress has shown little inclination to raise that amount. The taxes have fallen far short of what infrastructure needs exist. Even more stress on the infrastructure fund has been created with the advent of more electric vehicles. Clearly, for the future, the government will be collecting less in gas taxes.

One Option: Tolls Pay-as-you-go options exist and are growing. This includes tolls, which already exist in most states.

Other options include charging the motorists by the amount they drive.

Looking at Infrastructure Needs American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) formed a blue-ribbon committee, composed of government and private industry, to take a deep dive into the needs of America’s infrastructure. The report, published in 2019, reveals strong priorities for upgrading infrastructure. Many of their points are often overlooked but would be essential in using funds efficiently for the benefit of the public as well as the companies doing the work.

The report highlights the modernization of the 68,000-mi. National Highway Freight Network (NHFN) designated by Congress in 2015 as a top priority. The report calls the NHFN “America’s Economic Expressway.”

This expressway includes the interstate highway system and its critical urban and rural connectors to the nation’s airports, rail hubs, major ports, inland waterways and pipelines.

“Of all transportation infrastructure needs we have as a nation, improving the safe and efficient movement of goods is the key to increasing U.S. productivity, lowering the cost of things we produce and purchase, improving our environment and giving us the competitive edge in world markets.”

The report emphasized the importance of supporting the infrastructure. It notes that approximately 70 percent of all freight is carried on interstate highways. This number is increasing every year with the increased shopping online and growing domestic energy industry.

Future expansions make infrastructure support vial. The report continued, “Federal government forecasts say that by 2035 there will be 70 million more Americans and that truck shipments will have to grow by 40 percent to serve an expanding population and economy. Most Americans know our transportation network is not ready for that.”

The report also looks at future issues like autonomous vehicles. “Strategic and targeted investments in the NHFN will help prepare our interstates for autonomous trucks, cars and communications platforms that will use technology to increase safety, cut traffic congestion, save fuel and improve air quality. Every state and every American would benefit such investments, no matter where they live.”  CEG

1971: By adding a cargo box to the undercarriage of a combine harvester, Yanmar created the YFW500D, the world’s first tracked carrier. The YFW500D was powered by a Yanmar diesel engine and could transport materials on soft ground where trucks and dump trucks could not enter.

1978: The YFW26D, had a large loading capacity of 3 tons and was equipped with a 17-horsepower Yanmar vertical water-cooled three-cylinder diesel engine that enabled it to run quickly on slopes. The tough steel crawler made it a favorite of worksites.

1984: In the late 1970s, the market for wheel carriers was growing, and Yanmar launched the YFW35WA articulated wheel carrier. Equipped with super flat special low-pressure tires for soft ground, the 27 -in. wide 38-in. diameter tires were an unprecedented development among conventional carriers.

1985: Equipped with a 64-hp Yanmar vertical watercooled four-cylinder diesel engine, the YFW40R was launched in pursuit of not only running speed and power, but also comfort and used a large rubber crawler to reduce operator fatigue in a highly maneuverable HST. This model was the prototype for the C50R, which is still sold today.

1988: Yanmar released the YFW8R, a compact carrier with a width of only 950 mm built tough to work hard on construction sites. Until the YFW8R, tracked carriers had their driver’s seats mounted to one side or the other. But with the YFW8R, for the first time in the industry, the seat was placed in the center making it easy to get on and off from both sides and provided better visibility. This model was the prototype for the C12R, which is still on sale today.

La. to Receive $216M in Stim Aid for Transportation Needs Louisiana will be the beneficiary of $216 million in federal stimulus aid for the state’s transportation needs, including $50 million for preliminary work on Interstate 49 in Lafayette, according to an announcement April 19 from Gov. John Bel Edwards.

The monies are part of the $1.4 trillion stimulus package approved by the U.S. Congress in December, including $10 billion for transportation construction and improvements nationwide. The aid is aimed at helping states that suffered revenue losses due to the pandemic.

Louisiana’s portion of the assistance also features $20 million to aid local transportation planning agencies in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Lafayette and Shreveport, with another $29 million earmarked for the construction of a new bridge on I-10 in Lake Charles.

“As you are all aware, the state’s roads and bridges are in great need of repair and upgrade,” Edwards said in a statement that accompanied his announcement.

“Addressing these needs has been a priority of my administration.

“We have proven what we can do when

we have funds and have invested over $3 billion in infrastructure since 2016 despite a 1980s revenue stream as the main source of funding.”

The federal allocation for Louisiana

Because of the coronavirus, there had been less cars and trucks on the road until recently, meaning that those states with gas taxes, including the Bayou State, collected a much smaller portion of their key source of transportation funding.

Traffic plunged dramatically across Louisiana, especially in the early months of the pandemic, as many people worked from home rather than in their offices.

Louisiana collects 38.4 cents per gallon, including 20 cents per gallon in state charges.

Highway to Be Converted to Interstate The Advocate noted, however, that it is still not clear exactly how the I-49 funds will be used.

Louisiana’s plan is to connect New Orleans and Lafayette with an upgraded U.S. Highway 90 that becomes I-49 South, essentially converting U. S. 90 to a high speed, limited access interstate roadway.

When finished, I-49 South would begin in the West Bank of New Orleans, then travel past the bayou communities of St. Charles, Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes, through Morgan City, and connect with I-49 in Lafayette.

Proponents of the plan have said that the upgraded highway would connect ports in New Orleans and elsewhere with industries in the Midwest and oil industry suppliers and manufacturers between New Orleans and Houston.

However, a price-tag of up to $5 billion has been a longtime obstacle to making I-49 South a reality, The Advocate reported.

The $216 million federal stimulus aid to Louisiana also includes 17 preservation projects, mostly roadway overlay work that costs $2 million to $3 million per project. 

Problems Slow Work On Damaged Hanging Rock Visitors Ctr. The Hanging Rock Visitors Center in Stokes County, N.C., won’t reopen as expected, due to a series of problems that have slowed renovations to the water-damaged visitor center.

The variety of issues have some folks questioning the integrity of the $25 million structure.

A rustic wood-and-stone building, constructed in 1996, the visitors center shuttered its doors in 2020 to make repairs to weatherrelated damage to its exterior, according to park officials. The building’s decking, siding and structural supports, as well as the chimney, needed fixing.

“There was a lot of water damage, lots of rot,” Jason Anthony, a park ranger at the 9,011-acre state complex, told the News & Record.

It was hoped the visitors center would be able to reopen in April, but Anthony said it will take at least until summer’s end for construction crews to finish the job.

Simcon Construction Co., in nearby Mount Airy, is the general contractor of the renovations.

The reasons for the delay in finishing repairs are many, Anthony added.

The pandemic struck last spring at about the time improvements were set to begin, he

noted. As a result, Simcon’s crews couldn’t get going on the fixes until it was almost winter. More delays in the work were caused by season-long rain and snow.

And the damage was more extensive than originally thought, Anthony said.

In speaking with the News & Record, he acknowledged there have been concerns that the center’s original design put too much of an emphasis on making the structure “aesthetically pleasing” as opposed to long-lasting.

North Carolina voters in 1993 approved a $35 million bond referendum that funded the original $1.8 million construction of Hanging Rock’s visitors center.

The renovation work, as well, is being financed by $75 million in bond money approved by voters in 2016. It’s one of 45 state park projects that received the funds.

Hanging Rock State Park was built in the 1930s as a Civilian Conservation Corps project. Located in the ancient Sauratown Mountain Range, 30 mi. north of WinstonSalem, the park features a campground, picnic sites, a stocked lake for fishing, swimming and canoe rentals and more than 20

The park’s visitor’s center was the first of its kind in North Carolina, adding an educational component to the park experience with a classroom for visiting students and exhibit space highlighting the park’s attractions.

Other state parks have since followed suit

with their own similarly spacious visitor centers.

With the center closed, visitors to Hanging Rock have adapted as best they can, Anthony said, noting there are maps posted at most of the primary trailheads and guests can find several portable toilets in the parking lot outside the visitor center.

Complaints have been relatively few, Anthony said.

“We’ve all witnessed how adaptable our park visitors are,” he added.

The News & Record reported that despite the park being closed for seven weeks during March and April 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, Hanging Rock boasted a record year for visitors, with 867,911 passing through the gates — a 26 increase to the park’s usual 690,000 visitors.

“That’s remarkable considering we were closed for almost two months of the year,” Anthony said. “For a long while, parks were the only thing open.”

In fact, there were times during the past year, he said, that the Hanging Rock State Park was so crowded that its gates had to be closed and would-be visitors turned away. 

North Carolina Caterpillar Dealer Finds Its Success By POOLE from page 1

Fun it may have been to have survived and thrived in the face of such difficulty, but no one believes the resulting success was accomplished without work.

Caterpillar Tractor Company decided in 1950 to split in half its North Carolina sales territory to better serve customers spread across the 560-mi.-long state. To that end, it initiated talks with a road contractor in the state named Gregory Poole. Prior to World War II, Poole had begun a road contracting business, leaving it temporarily during the war to mine coal in West Virginia after road contract funds were diverted to wartime priorities such as coal production.

Poole employed Cat machinery in his road work, so when Caterpillar executives decided to reorganize its North Carolina dealer network, Poole was offered the territory from Burlington east to the Atlantic Coast. “My grandfather jumped at the opportunity,” the current company president said.

Gregory Poole became a Cat dealer the next year, partnering with his uncle, William Lewis Gregory. The Gregory-Poole Equipment Company opened its doors on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh in April 1951 in a building formerly housing an auto dealership. A branch office was opened at the same time in an old Army Quonset hut in New Bern.

During this period, Caterpillar was transitioning from farm equipment to heavy construction machinery. In 1951, for example, it introduced its first belly scraper, a year later its track loader, and two years after that its first D9 bulldozer. An era of Caterpillar dominance in heavy construction equipment had begun.

Consequently, in three short years, Gregory-Poole Equipment experienced enough business success to build a new corporate headquarters on Beryl Road in Raleigh. It said something about the confidence of company leaders at that moment that they hired an acclaimed modernist architect, George Matsumoto, to design the headquarters facility. Matsumoto was a founding member of the School of Design at N.C. State University — located further east on Hillsborough Street — and his executed plan for the headquarters facility won several architectural awards.

he began to preside, an Industrial Division was formed in Raleigh to sell and service materials-handling equipment — forklifts and other warehouse lifting machinery. The division soon opened a branch in Wilmington, N.C. In ensuing years, North Carolina dealership branches were opened in Washington and Fayetteville. In 1986, the Industrial Division of the company leapfrogged the state line and established two locations in South Carolina. A Caterpillar Power Systems Division opened in Raleigh in 1990 to serve power generation, marine and truck applications.

Clearly, this period of the company history was not static, with expansion to six locations, addition of several new lines of equipment, rolling out of ever more capable Caterpillar equipment, and growth in the company workforce from 40 employees to 400.

The company also saw the arrival in 1978 of a third Poole generation, Gregory Poole III. “I actually started long before then, but that was my hire date,” he said. “I started sweeping floors in the parts department when I was eight years old and worked in the shop from ages 12 to 16. I’ve always wanted to work here.”

After formally coming aboard, Poole worked through a succession of positions for the next 18 years, culminating in 1996 with his rise to president and chief operating offi-

cer. Three years later, Poole purchased the company from his father.

Within 18 months of that transition in leadership, the new chief executive faced his first major challenge, which came partly as a consequence of a national crisis. The economy suffered a severe blow when terrorists attacked the United States in September of 2001, striking targets less than 300 miles north of Raleigh in Washington, D.C., and farther north in New York City.

“We had basically flatlined at that point.

We had to make a major shift in what we were doing,” Poole said. Internal meetings were called to attempt to resolve the dilemma. “We met weekly and we each had areas of responsibility. In the end, we unfortunately had to cut some people from the payroll to right-size the organization for the times, and for where we were going and where the economy was going.”

It was a memorable and successful handling of a first challenge. “I’ll never forget pulling that team together and facilitating, rather than dictating, decisions. Outlining the facts and pulling things together until we had a consensus about where we knew we needed to go.”

Poole said that moment was indicative of his leadership style, which he characterized as “facilitating an environment and leading people to a right conclusion rather than telling them what the right conclusion should be.”

He has turned to that method of management in responding to subsequent challenges, such as dealing with the deep recession of 2008-10 and the ongoing pandemic’s disruption of normal business activity.

In the two decades that Gregory Poole III has led the dealership, the pace of growth and change has quickened. The Lift Systems Division has been expanded across North and South Carolina and Virginia, and in 2014, the division incorporated as an affiliate the formerly Ohio-based Advanced Handling Systems, which serves the materials handling industry.

The following year, Gregory Poole Equipment became an authorized dealer of Hyster and Yale lift trucks, with offices in North and South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. Additionally, a partnership with

The industry itself also has changed. For one thing, rental of equipment has come into its own as the cost and complexity of machinery has risen and federal investment in infrastructure has become more problematic. When contractors today need an extra piece of equipment or aren’t sure about the duration of a job, they often rent rather than buy.

“Rental equipment fluctuates between 8 percent and 10 percent of our business,” Poole said. “It’s a growing segment and I don’t see that changing.”

Most Poole Equipment customers rent skid steer loaders, small bulldozers, excavators and various aerial products, according to the president.

The development of compact equipment, such as compact track loaders and miniexcavators, was another notable change in the industry. It severely tested old-line manufacturers of heavy equipment like Caterpillar. Poole said reinventing the Cat lineup to incorporate compact machines was a challenge for both Cat and its dealers.

“That was a pretty tough segment for Cat. For the first time in the history of Caterpillar, it was going up against a trademark brand, Bobcat. Bobcat was synonymous with Coca-Cola and Kleenex. Everybody calls a cola a Coke and a piece of tissue a Kleenex.

Cat was up against a brand that huge.”

At this point, Poole believes Cat is “holding our own and making great headway in that segment. I think the reason we are successful is because of the reputation of Cat and of each of the dealers. Cat has a wonderful reputation for building quality equipment and Gregory Poole has an amazing record of

delivering service and keeping customers up and running.”

Yet there was a necessary “pivot,” Poole said. “Unlike the expectations of customers of D10 and D9 dozers, the compact equipment customers were people who wanted an oil change on a machine they would drop off at six in the evening and expected to pick up at six or 6:30 in the morning. We had to adapt to that and did so by putting in a second shift to handle that expectation.”

From six Caterpillar locations when Gregory Poole III became president, the dealership has grown to 23 locations for Caterpillar and other lines of equipment.

From 400 employees, it has swelled to nearly 1,300. Poole said such steady growth has been sustainable because, from the very beginning, company leadership has cultivated a culture of teamwork.

“My grandfather placed a large emphasis on the quality of people he hired and focused on the culture being very family-centric,” he said. “Obviously, you have to enhance that when you grow from a mom-and-pop store to a company of this size. You have to enhance the culture so that people who are managing a department or a division do so as if they owned it.”

To parcel out responsibility in that way, Poole believes the structure of decisionmaking is critical. “When all decisions are funneled to the top of a pyramid and then back down again, I think the end is in sight.

There is no more growth, and your company becomes stagnant. Worse yet, you kill the creativity and ingenuity of the people working for you.

“We have had many, many discussions about how to grow the company, where to grow and why to grow. It has been fun to watch the energy level of people pick up as they decide to embrace our culture,” Poole said. He added that four years ago he implemented an initiative that inculcated into the process more accountability and more strate-

gic thinking. The reward to the company has been “huge.”

Everyone knows the old business adage, “Take care of customers and customers will take care of you.” Poole tweaked the maxim a bit. “I would take it one step further. If you take care of your employees, your employees will, by default, take care of the customers and the customers will take care of you.

“That doesn’t mean we don’t focus on customers, but we can’t leave our employees on the sidelines. That would be catastrophic because they are the ones who make our customers happy and keep them up and running and coming back to us.”

The company owner said the dealership’s reliance on team effort works because people hired to work at Gregory Poole Equipment are carefully chosen in a thorough hiring process.

“We have three full-time recruiters, and we are front and center with everyone. We don’t back away from vetting, no matter for what level of employment we are making a job offer. We want to make sure we have a good fit. That’s the first thing. The second thing is maintaining the company’s family culture and always doing what is right by your employees.”

Continued Poole: “Those two things have held us in good stead for seven decades. We plan on continuing that kind of focus and carrying it forward for another 70 years.”

And somewhere in those future decades — relatively soon — the next succession in family-owned company leadership is expected to occur. The process already has begun, Poole said.

“My oldest son works in the business and our plans are definitely to see this business transition to the fourth generation.” 

Ussery Services Forestry Mulching Hosts Demo Event

T

raditionally, a manufacturer will work with a contractor for sourcing a location to hold a product demo and does the lion share of the work to coordinate all aspects and to bring in attendees. Such was not the case for a recent contractor mulching demo event in Sterling, Ga., just outside the city limits of Brunswick.

Event host George Ussery of Ussery Services Forestry Mulching has been so impressed with his mulching products purchased from FAE, his carrier machines from his local John Deere dealer, and pretty much the industry as a whole, he decided to hold a demo event. Attendees were those people that he has been in close contact via Facebook and other contractors that share his passion for the mulching industry. Ussery pulled together a tremendously successful demo event on April 17 with Facebook friends from around the country turning out and product manufacturer FAE coming out to support the event by hosting a catered lunch and lots of FAE “swag” items.

When asked why, Ussery said, “There’s some in the mulching industry that just

won’t talk to you about their business, much less get together, hang out, share tips and let you try their equipment. I don’t feel competition from others, and I just wanted something for all of us to get together. Some in this business are kind of like a family or a fraternity. I just asked people to come join us. For my Facebook group of friends in the industry, this is our first time meeting faceto-face. Some flew in from various parts of the country — it wasn’t just a local event.”

The John Deere tractors and the FAE mulching heads for the demo were owned

by Ussery Services. The company, which branched out into the mulching industry just two short years ago with an old tractor, now has a half-million dollars in machines and mulching equipment, and still growing every day.

Ussery said that “everyone is here because I asked them, even FAE and the entertainment. It’s just some good ole Southern hospitality.”

With this machine and this head, which runs off standard hydraulic flow, it is the sized machine that would easily allow me to get into residential areas without slinging material. It’s real smooth and the power continues without bogging down in heavy brush. I’m impressed.”

Making the trek from New York to demo the machines was George Odbert of MAC Services, Lawrence, N.Y. “I’ve been running other heads and I’m here to see and test the FAE products. No one has these where I’m from because mulching in general isn’t as popular in upstate New York, so we had to come south to check it out.”

Odbert has been in the mulching business for two years and sees that upgrading his process could be useful in becoming more productive in land clearing and reclaiming farmland and land for home sites.

“With COVID, there are a lot of people coming from New York City out to the country to relocate and work remotely. These overgrown farmlands need to be cleaned up to be appealing for relocation. I’m looking for quicker speed and finer finish. Right now, the finished mulched product we leave behind is not the best it can be and doesn’t come out smooth like it does with these mulcher heads I’m testing today,” added Odbert.

Volvo Expands Material Handler Line With New Models

Volvo Construction Equipment has launched the all-new EW200E material handler, aimed at the light waste handling segment. Its bigger brother — the EW240E material handler — is updated with a longer boom.

“A dedicated material handler is purpose-built for these applications, compared with modifying an excavator to fit into these segments,” said Matthew McLean, product manager, excavators, Volvo CE. “Now we’ve added a second machine to our line-up with the EW200E MH, which is perfect for light and medium material handling like plastic, household waste and scrap.”

Engineered for Durability, Productivity The EW200E material handler weighs 22.6 tons and is powered by a Volvo D6J 6-L Tier IV final engine that provides 173 hp (129 kW). The machine has three boom and arm configurations. The straight boom can be fitted with either a 13-ft. gooseneck arm or an 11-ft. 6-in. sorting arm, giving the EW200E a max reach of 33 ft. and a max lifting capacity of 25,600 lbs.

Danuser Expands to Support Construction Segment A multiyear expansion program is currently under way at Danuser, a manufacturer of skid steer and tractor attachments, to meet growing demand from construction customers and other industry segments.

Glenn Danuser, co-owner and a fourth-generation leader of the family-owned company based in Fulton, Mo., said the expansion program is designed to help streamline production, improve cost control and increase overall efficiency.

“In addition to keeping pace with current orders, we will have new products coming out soon, including larger products, that require additional modern space,” he said.

Danuser said the current phase of the expansion program is scheduled to be finished this year. It is a 6,500-sq.-ft. metal building to provide more space for storing finished inventory, with a capacity for 1,400 products.

“The additional space will enable us to shorten product delivery time to our distributor/dealer network,” he explained.

The new building is located approximately 4 mi. off-site on land that has been in the Danuser family for many years and was formerly used for a dairy farm.

The expansion program began in 2014, consisting of a new 32,500-sq.-ft. addition connected to the company’s headquarters plant. That space is primarily used for laser cutting, presswork, robotics, hand welding and receiving.

The next phase, finished in 2019, involved construction of a new 11,600-sq.-ft. headquarters office building. The structure features flexible open office areas ringed by private offices and conference rooms, and a cafeteria that transitions

into the existing manufacturing shop.

Danuser said planning is expected to get under way for the final expansion phase early next year. That work will expand the company’s powder coating operation, manufacturing and additional warehousing space on the headquarters site.

“We’re addressing the expansion needs of today as well as thinking about our needs for the future,” Danuser said. “The market for attachments has continued to grow, and a lot of

companies are getting into the attachment sector. Our strength continues to be offering patented niche products and adhering to the same quality standards since our company was established over 100 years ago.”

Danuser attachments include the EP Auger System, Mega Mixer material handling bucket, Intimidator land clearing attachment and Hammer post driver and concrete breaker.

Creative Design Fuels Bauer Built’s Future Plans Among the top product lines are the SD-36 off-road side-dump trailer and the SMS-32 manure spreader.

When Vaughn Bauer began designing and manufacturing folding planters for local agriculture in Paton, Iowa, he was simply improving upon the design and utility of machinery used commonly by farmers in the area.

Not only did he create and develop his own unique solutions, but he also helped others with his expertise, as well. Word caught on quickly and he became known for his innovations.

What began as Paton Machine and Welding, a machine, weld and paint garage for custom jobs that opened in 1982, is now Bauer Built Manufacturing (BBM), an 80-staff strong operation housed in a 300,000-sq.-ft. large-scale manufacturing facility with services including CNC machining, laser cutting and saw cutting, welding and assembly.

“I enjoy working here mostly because of the constant change in workflow. I’ve built and designed so many things in the course of my time here ... A lot of companies will reach out to us because of our short timeframes and what we can do,” he said, which he attributes to “the nature of the facility, the resources we can allocate to a project, and the people we can provide.”

Specialty equipment at Bauer includes a Tanaka LMRV TF6000 plate laser, measuring 120 ft. long by 10 ft. wide, and two Mazak 3D FABRI GEAR 300 tube lasers, a niche product that can deal with up to 50-ft. tubes. For high production weldments, Bauer has two robotic welding cells — a Lincoln Electric System 55 and a Wolf Robot (that can hold up to 7,000 lbs.).

With business ramping up again this year following the slump brought on by the pandemic, BBM is eyeing markets on both coasts and internationally. While the pandemic did affect BBM with production going slow as some of the companies it worked with were affected, there was no direct impact within the company itself.

With a spacious manufacturing facility and staff spread out across functions, the offices and factories never closed, and there were no local county-mandated closures.

Johnson did share that finding skilled labor is a challenge “as a whole in the manufacturing industry. In an effort to build the future of manufacturing, BBM is engaged with the area community colleges and high school career academies promoting the theory that a skilled trade is more than a job, it is a career without the burden of debt associated with bachelor’s degrees.”

Another challenge is being able to compete economically in a niche area of the industry. Despite that, he voiced promise in business picking up again and demand for Bauer’s trailers on the rise.  CEG

Following the discouraging news that it is around the age of 10 at which girls stop considering engineering as a potential career path, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) saw it as an opportunity to redress the balance.

Through a series of innovation workshops called Vera — in honor of Sweden’s first female engineer Vera Sandberg — Volvo CE together with strategic partner Mälardalen University (MDH) set about reversing this trend by inspiring young girls to recognize their abilities in science and technology. One-of-a-Kind Vessel Vital to Fix Mississippi River Erosion

The lower Mississippi River is a habitual wanderer. With its water flowing into the Gulf of Mexico at a rate of between 200,000 and 700,000 cu. ft. per second, the powerful river constantly erodes its banks. It carved out its present route to the Gulf about a thousand years ago and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is determined that the meandering river now stay on course.

To retard further erosion, the Corps spends six to seven months each year cladding banks along vulnerable stretches of the lower Mississippi. It utilizes a one-of-a-kind vessel called a mat-sinking unit or MSU to weave together a mattress of concrete blocks, which then is laid along the riverbank and bottom.

The current MSU was launched in 1948 — nearly three quarters of a century ago — and is showing its age. The good news is that the unique floating work platform is on schedule to be replaced by a state-of-the-art vessel.

** The Mississippi River flows south for more than 2,300 mi. to reach Gulf waters, draining numerous states between the Rockies and the Appalachian Mountains. The last thousand miles is mostly where the action is for USACE personnel because, unlike upper regions, the lower Mississippi contains no locks or dams. It is uncontrolled flow to the sea.

“The lower Mississippi is our workplace” is how Barry Sullivan characterized it.

Sullivan is chief of the mat-sinking unit, which works out of the Corps’ Vicksburg District office.

The MSU work is part of the engineers’ ongoing effort to protect some 460 mi. of levees within the district and ensure the waterway remains navigable for river traffic.

The work is seasonal and the length of the season can vary.

Generally, it starts in August and runs through February. and convoyed to the floating MSU for assembly and sinking.

Each supply barge holds 585 squares, which is about 950 tons of concrete. When a barge arrives, it is tied up to the MSU and the building blocks are unloaded for real-time utilization. The empty barge then is returned to the plant for another load as a full barge takes its place. Most days on the river, five barge-loads of the concrete squares are off-loaded, joined and sunk.

To help the operating MSU stay in position while riding the current, a 400-ft.-long barge is moored on the vessel’s downstream side, perpendicular to the riverbank. The MSU floats out into the river alongside the barge with the mat trailing out behind it and disappearing into the water.

To stabilize this entire floating complex of working and moored craft, the MSU crew relies on cables running to several Caterpillar D6 and D7 dozers stationed ashore. Another set of cables connect the mat to other dozers so that, as the matboat moves out into the waterway, the mat is pulled from the deck and into the river waters. After a 900-ft.-long mat is completely deployed, the moored barge, MSU and onshore dozers are floated downstream and the mat-sinking process begins anew.

Sullivan said when the process is working smoothly, about 25 ft. of mat is deployed every five minutes.

“Sometimes that can stretch up to 10 minutes. For example, one of our gantry cranes isn’t working right now, so we’re doing the work with three cranes. There are a lot of variables like that to slow us down, but on a good day, we have five-minute launches.”

The designed life of the mat is 50 years.

“We have some that are older than that and still are in place,” said Sullivan. “But we also have some mats that were a lot younger and are gone. The river said, ‘You’re not going to stay here!’ and ripped them out.” see MISSISSIPPI page 64

Next-Gen Mat-Sinking Unit Will Protect 460 Mi. of Levees

When the river wins, the MSU eventually returns to the scene and overlays a new mattress on the remnants of the old one.

Erosion-fighting mats can last a lot longer than 50 years, as Sullivan recently was reminded. He was shown a sonar picture of a stretch of river bottom. The photo displayed a mat of bound willow trees that 19th-century engineers placed for the same reason Sullivan is laying concrete mats there today. ** A next-generation mat-sinking unit is in the works and will be christened “Armor 1” — mat-sinking is equated with “armoring” the bottom and banks of the river. The new vessel will be bigger, more robotic and far more productive than the current boat.

According to chief project manager John Cross, Armor 1 will be the same height and width as the current vessel — 40 ft. and 75 ft., respectively — but at 212 ft. will be 36 ft. longer. The extra length is designed to stabilize the craft in faster water and create a better working area on deck.

Safety and reliability were key design parameters for Armor 1, Cross said. The vessel will incorporate modern safety features and comply with all safety regulations promulgated since the 1940s when the predecessor craft was constructed. It will be double-hulled, for example.

It also will be of modular design so that parts and systems can be easily procured and the vessel reliably maintained. By comparison, the gantry of cranes on the current vessel, which unload the mat squares and position them on the deck, were last refurbished in the 1970s. Because OEM crane parts are not available, Corps machinists routinely fabricate replacements.

“The other thing we focused on in designing Armor 1 was increasing our efficiency,” said Cross, who is a Corps of Engineers retired colonel who came out of retirement to help get the project rolling. “Today, on a really good day on the

river, they can sink about 2,000 squares. Our goal was to double that.”

Not only can more mats be sunk in a season, the bigger and better boat will be able to finish a job faster and get out of the way of commercial river traffic.

“The Mississippi is a very, very busy waterway,” he said.

“Sometimes we have to close the channel to barge traffic for up to 12 hours. It’s like working on a highway. You don’t want to clog up the road with construction work.”

New technologies will help speed the mat-sinking.

Stitching the squares together on deck to form a complete mattress now is a manual process. Armor 1 will replace most of the manpower with pneumatic robotics. The gantry of overhead cranes that work in tandem to handle the mattress squares also are operated manually today and will become robotic. A design team at Carnegie Mellon University National Research Engineering Center in Pittsburgh, Pa., devoted several years to developing the Armor 1 robotic system.

These and other technological advancements will reduce the number of crew members from the current complement of 225.

“But there still will be plenty of people on the river,” Cross said. “The MSU doesn’t work by itself. There will be a lot of humans still involved. It’s like in a modern factory. Someone is not putting on each lug nut in an assembly, but someone is monitoring the station and making sure the robot is getting it done right.”

Crew members on the new vessel will be a mix of new and veteran workers. Some will have to learn a new skill, some not. Hinds Community College in Vicksburg is working with the Corps to develop a training curriculum for Armor 1 crew members.

The vessel is under construction at the Thoma-Sea shipbuilding facility in Lockport, La. It is on schedule to be launched in December 2022 and to be utilized on the Mississippi River in the 2023 working season. The entire cost

of the project, including development and construction of a prototype, is $125 million.

The land-based prototype already is being tested in Pennsylvania. Last September, the full-scale model began to validate the worth of Carnegie Mellon’s robotic systems. The robot on the prototype is the largest ever constructed by the university. Performance testing will continue in Pennsylvania for the next two years. ** And so, the revetment work continues. Year after year, the USACE labors to keep the Mississippi River in its banks and out of neighboring fields and communities. Engineers monitor the erosion of the river’s edges and the aggregation of sediment in river channels and respond with riprap and mat-sinking as well as an auxiliary activity, dredging.

Mat-sinking is weather sensitive, of course. Sub-freezing temperatures halt the work because ice is a complicating factor in deck and supply work. Thunderstorms also can interrupt the process via wind-whipped waters. But Sullivan said the most dangerous meteorological danger is lightning. The MSU is equipped with lightning sensors that warn of approaching electrical fields.

The biggest impediment to work during the 2020-21 season was the COVID virus. Normally, crews work 12-day shifts, sleeping in a dormitory situated on a moored barge.

When the virus struck, Sullivan instituted 25-day work schedules to help isolate crews from the pandemic. Travel home for their days off is in 15-passenger vans to minimize interaction with the public.

“It seems to have worked,” the chief said shortly before the season ended March 4. “We had a small outbreak early, but we did not have to shut down. I would hope next season we can get back to some semblance of normalcy. At least I hope 25-day shifts are not the new normal.”  CEG

n April 22, Iron Auction Group held an absolute Inventory Reduction Auction for R&T Grading and Rucker Farms in Pelion, S.C.
