In Bay County, Fla., work is under way on a $50 million, multiyear construction project that calls for a four-lane roadway on SR 388 from SR 79 to east of Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is overseeing the work, which officially began in February. “Traffic volume has increased on SR 388, due to the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport’s new facility, which opened in May 2010 CEG CORRESPONDENT

Atomic Sand Helps Keep America Growing, Beautiful By Joe Barron CEG ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Ryan Williams never saw much value in sand until he found himself giving the stuff away. Williams was working at the family business, the Williams C&D Landfill, which his father established in Graniteville, S.C., in 2002. As excavation at the landfill proceeded, the sand began to pile up, and it had to be disposed of somehow. “As the pile grew larger, we had to find a way to move it,” Williams said in an interview. “We were giving it away to anybody that would take it, and we realized quickly that wasn’t going to be profitable. That’s when we started to research the washed-sand industry and decided to put in our first sandwashing plant.” Williams named the plant Full Circle Aggregates and built a small, niche concern into a successful supplier that, nine months ago, bought out its closest competitor over in Beech Island. His company now goes by the name Atomic Sand, and for a simple reason — the sand deposit he now owns is located on Atomic Road, not too far from the Savannah River nuclear facility. The name also inspired the motto found on the company Facebook page: “Nuclear-grade sand.” As far as Williams is concerned, that description fits his product to a T. “Atomic Sand is a great deposit,” he said. “The gradation of the sand is near perfect, and many tests have been run on the sand from Atomic because it is used in Department of Energy projects, and it passed all its tests with flying colors.” The white, washed sand for which Atomic is known is used primarily in ready-mix concrete in state Department of Transportation projects. The company also produces small-

er quantities of fine-grade sand suitable for masonry, as well as kaolin that currently is helping to rebuild a nearby dam, which failed during a hurricane. “They needed a good, impermeable, heavy material, and fortunately, we found that in our excavation,” Williams said. “The sand deposit also has a lot of decorative river stone that we plan to process here in the very near future.” Besides the quality of the raw materials, Williams gives much of the credit for Atomic Sand’s success to his wife, Ashley. “She has been the force behind the scenes that keeps us afloat,” he said. “She handles all accounts and makes sure I stay grounded. I couldn’t have tackled this site without her

help.” When all facets of the operation are working in sync, Atomic’s washing plant can turn out about 2,500 tons of sand in a standard, one-shift day. It employs a pair of Hyundai excavators — an HX 330 and an HX 290 — to strip the layers above the sand, and a Hyundai HL980 wheel loader to fill its dump trucks, which carry the raw material to the plant. “The 290 is a testimony in itself,” Williams said. “That machine is still running. It’s got over 15,000 hours, and it’s still running in production.” May/RHI, a new company formed this year by the merger of May Heavy Equipment and Rob’s Hydraulics Inc., pro-

vided the Hyundai equipment, as well as a small Hitachi wheel loader. Williams called the dealer’s service “impeccable.” “You get instant results when you call, and they have gone out of their way to take excellent care of us,” he said. “The guys have worked diligently on our scale system, which needed tweaking, and so we made a call and they were down the next day.” The Hyundai wheel loader, a new model, has an internal scale system, and when Atomic first took possession, crews found the scale was not resetting automatically. “A service manager from Hyundai came out here with his guys and our guys and they went over the machine,” explained Michael Lanier, May/RHI’s sales representative. “Since then they’ve had good production with good results. It was software-related, just a bug somewhere.” “I think Michael and I would have become buddies even if we didn’t have a business relationship,” Williams added. Once it arrives at the washing plant, the sand is screened to remove any rocks or clay balls. It then goes into a classifier tank, where it is graded and mixed. Williams takes pride in Atomic’s commitment to environmental sustainability. After washing, for example, the water used in the process, which comes from a nearby pond, is drained into a collection system consisting of five smaller ponds, then returned to the source. “We try to minimize our impact on natural resources, such as water, so we recycle as much as we can,” Williams said. “As the newest company to carry the Full Circle Aggregates name, Atomic Sand is guided by the principles of innovative sustainability to make sure our products help keep America growing — and beautiful.”  CEG

RJV Equipment Welcomes Customers to Its New Home

Going over the Ditch Witch JT20XP (L-R) are Mike Goodman and Kevin Schafluetzel of RJV Equipment and Nate Crisp and Blake Cooper of Athens, Tenn., Utility Board.

(L-R): Matt Thielke, Corey Smith, Tucker Dotson, Greg Wolfe and Darryl Brown, all of Ditch Witch, gather in front of their company’s lineup of products at RJV Equipment’s open house. Brent Brown (L), Smoky Mountain Utility Services in Gatlinburg, Tenn., shows off one of the many door prizes RJV Equipment gave away to show customers its appreciation. With him are Chris (C) and Logan Alexander of RJV Equipment.

R Keeping the machines up and running at RJV Equipment (L-R) are Joe Cummings, service manager; A.J. Hawn, field technician; Ray Romano, president; and Joe Hunt, product support manager.

(L-R): Ray Romano, RJV Equipment president, meets with David White and Kath Cross of Star Construction, a subsidiary of Dycom Industries in Knoxville; Chris Alexander, RJV Equipment; and Cory Smith and Tucker Dotson of Ditch Witch.

A hearty lunch provided by Texas Roadhouse Restaurant included ribs, chicken breast, corn, string beans, rolls and tea.

JV Equipment held an open house April 9 at its new location on Rudy Street, Knoxville, Tenn., just off I-275. Guests had the opportunity to look over the latest machines from Ditch Witch and Kubota, and they also enjoyed a catered lunch provided by Texas Roadhouse Restaurant that included ribs, chicken, corn, string beans, rolls and tea. The new facility offers more than twice the space of RJV’s previous location, with 14,500 sq. ft. on more than 5 acres, including an 8,500-sq.-ft. service area that can easily house a dozen machines at a time. “This really gives us the capacity to have both Ditch Witch and Kubota products as well as growth going forward,” said RJV Equipment President Ray Romano. “We also carry CAM Superline and Felling trailers, CP/Epiroc breakers, Blue Diamond, Paladin, Diamond mowers, Vacuworx, and Land Pride attachments.” RJV Equipment, which does business as Ditch Witch of Tennessee and RJV Kubota, maintains a fleet of service trucks for normal maintenance, as well as full-capability service trucks equipped with cranes, welders and air compressors. “We try to have support from sales people all the way back through the service department,” Romano said. “We’ve spent a lot of time and money investing in our people. We’re extremely proud of our reputation.” Another source of pride — and a major source of expansion — is the rental side of the business. In a niche market such as the one served by Ditch Witch, Romano explained, dealers in the past have been loath to rent equipment. That hesitation became a thing of the past in middle and eastern Tennessee when RJV arrived on the scene. “We are probably one of the more aggressive dealers in the rental side of the business — whether it be mini-skid steers, small walk-behind trenchers or big drills,” Romano said. “We rent all the Kubota Construction Equipment products.”  CEG

Crews Rebuild Tenn. Bridge One Week After Collapse By Eric Olson CEG CORRESPONDENT

The collapse of the I-75 South bridge over I-24 West in Chattanooga April 1 proved to be anything but a funny April Fool’s Day prank to motorists and the Tennessee DOT. All lanes at the busy interchange of I-75 and I-24 closed for several hours after the failure, stopping traffic in all directions throughout most of the day. Due to the swift response of TDOT and its contractor, C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. of Marietta, Ga., however, repairs on the two-lane I-75 South bridge — originally estimated to take two weeks — were completed in just seven days as traffic flowed freely again by early April 8. The accident occurred at “one of the most heavily-trafficked intersections in the country,” Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke stated on Twitter. An average of 27,800 trucks and cars come through the intersection each day, according to TDOT. One person was hurt due to the bridge failure when a single car hit the fallen concrete. The victim’s injuries were determined to be non-life threatening, according to TDOT. By the evening hours after the April 1 collapse, TDOT had reopened the I-24 westbound lanes to traffic and its crews were soon at work fixing the I-75 South bridge overhead. That was despite the fact the damage to the I-75 span was worse than first thought. At a news conference April 2, Paul Degges, chief engineer for TDOT in the Chattanooga area, said the local police mistakenly reported to his agency that the concrete bridge rail had fallen. Instead, engineers discovered it was the outer bridge beam, along with the concrete rail, that had collapsed onto the I-24 West roadway below. Heavy Impact From Below “We did a fair amount of forensic work to see if it was an initial design issue, but we determined that was not the cause,” Degges explained. “Instead, we believe some sort of oversized-load vehicle hit that bridge underneath and sliced through some of the steel-reinforced strands in the exterior beams. It didn’t collapse immediately. The hit could have been a matter of hours or a few days before, but it was weakened by the strike.” He added that the beam’s steel didn’t have any rust in it, which also led his engineers to conclude that a heavy truck struck the bridge shortly before it failed. Degges also said that recent temperature changes in the Chattanooga area could have further stressed the broken steel strands, causing them to finally snap. “We saw a series of five steel strands that were all broken in the same location,” he continued. “It seemed improbable to us that you would have a failure of five different reinforcing strands in the same place. The broken strands all happened to be under the left lane of traffic and not in the middle of the bridge’s underside. All the forensic evidence shows that the strands broke, the beam fell and pulled one end of the beam off the pier and it fell straight down onto the pavement.” Repairs Began Immediately By the evening of April 1, TDOT had cleared away the heavy debris in the roadway and reopened I-24 westbound lanes to traffic. Later that night, the agency allowed the right lane of traffic to flow over the damaged I-75 bridge after putting temporary barriers in place.

To remove the broken beam from the road that day, Degges and his crews brought in an excavator that had a hoe ram, also known as a pavement breaker, fitted onto it. The powerful percussion hammer is ideal for this type of job. With that done, TDOT hauled away the piece, and its dump trucks brought in concrete barrier rail to the site for the rebuild. On Tuesday evening, April 2, C.W. Matthews began their part of the emergency repair to restore the I-75 South bridge back to two lanes. “We were looking at a longer repair time but, because the contractor worked 20 hours a day through the following weekend, we were able to get it open again to two lanes before the Monday morning rush-hour traffic on April 8 — less than a week after the collapse occurred,” Degges said. During the work on the reconstruction of the outer bridge beam, TDOT and C.W. Matthews erected a new steel railing that allowed the two lanes of traffic to continue to move over the bridge. Degges said the lanes were narrowed a bit, but drivers could still travel safely and easily from I-24 West onto I-75 South. TDOT Plans New Interchange The repaired bridge will be permanently removed in the next several years as TDOT and C.W. Matthews are currently working on designs for a new reconfiguration of the I24/I-75 interchange. At 60 years old, the I-75 South bridge is Tennessee DOT photo approaching the end of its useful life, Degges said. Prior to the pouring of concrete, a National crane raisTDOT does not know who hit the bridge and caused the es new steel-reinforced strands for placement in the collapse. The department’s cameras at the site don’t keep a repaired section of the ramp bridge. recorded history of footage due to privacy laws, Degges said, although the department and police are still investigating. I-24 begins in the city and runs northwest through Nashville and into southern Indiana, where it links with other major highways to St. Louis and points west. On the southern end, it links with I-75 to move people and cargo south to Atlanta, Tampa and Miami.  CEG

scendum Machinery hosted an open house at its Asheville, N.C., location March 25 to introduce its new partnership with LeeBoy. Ascendum, the largest Volvo Construction Equipment dealership in both the United States and the world, began carrying LeeBoy equipment Jan. 1 to complement its core lineup of Volvo road machinery. The open house also showcased Ascendum’s lineup of Volvo construction equipment, which includes excavators, loaders, and haulers, along with generators, air compressors and light towers from Doosan Portable Power. Adam Wade, Ascendum’s new road machinery segment manager and paving specialist, and Scott Lee, its new LeeBoy product specialist, were on hand to introduce themselves and answer customers’ questions. LeeBoy is the name behind commercial asphalt paving equipment — track and wheeled pavers, motorgraders, distributor trucks, brooms and more — designed with the paving professional in mind. Equipment operators work hard, and for all the right reasons — pride, quality, reputation, prosperity. Every day is a challenge — the weather, changing job specs, demanding customers — but the crews keep going. They expect their equipment to work as hard as they do, to be every bit as tough, productive and reliable. Ascendum Machinery offers extensive product lines with an informed staff to support all of its customers’ heavy equipment needs. Ascendum is committed to meet the expectations of its customers and provide the high level of service that their customers deserve. In addition to providing heavy equipment solutions, Ascendum continues to offer the best product support programs for its equipment. It also maintains relationships with SDLG, Sennebogen, and Sandvik. The Asheville open house was held in conjunction with an event held March 22 at Ascendum’s Charlotte, N.C., location.  CEG

Aggregate Hauler Prefers Reliability of Kenworth T880s Roderick “Roddy” J. Valente founded R. J. Valente Gravel Inc. in 1989 with one dump truck, a bulldozer and dispatch located in his kitchen. Today, R. J. Valente is one of New York state’s largest material handlers. Serving the Albany, N.Y., region, the company is a family affair operated by Roddy, along with his daughter Daniella, son, Stephen A., and nephews, Anthony and Stephen J. With 52 trucks, the company is able to offer timely service and quality rock products from several of its pit and quarry facilities located in and around the Capital District. For many years, Valente ran another truck make. That all changed about four years ago when the company switched to Kenworth. “We didn’t have a Kenworth dealer in our area until Kenworth Northeast Group moved to Albany,” said Anthony Valente, who is in charge of sales and fleet management. “We dipped our toe in the water with Kenworth Northeast — Albany, got a good feeling, and bought a round of Kenworths. That was it. Our drivers absolutely love the T880s. Not only do the trucks look sharp going down the road, everything in it feels well built. It’s a heavily spec’d truck and we’re very happy with the T880s.” That first round of Kenworths included 10 T880s — five dumps and five tractors — all with PACCAR MX-13 engines. After working the trucks and seeing how they lived up to the Kenworth reputation and “after the sale” customer service, the company was sold on Kenworth. Since then, R.J. Valente has purchased a total of 38 new Kenworths based on driver appreciation, low cost of ownership, reduced downtime and superior service from Kenworth Northeast. “We’ve had great experience

The company fleet is split between 26 dumps and 26 tractors that haul dump trailers. Kenworth T880 dumps are spec’d with PACCAR MX-13 engines rated at 455-hp, while the T880 tractors are rated at 500-hp, all with Eaton UltraShift transmissions.

with PACCAR MX-13 engines,” said Valente. “At first, we purchased the extended warranty with them, but over the past two orders we stopped buying the extended warranty because we haven’t had any problems. We plan to buy 10 more Kenworths this year or early next year, so that will pretty much turn the fleet over to all Kenworths.” The company fleet is split between 26 dumps and 26 tractors that haul dump trailers. Kenworth T880 dumps are spec’d with PACCAR MX-13 engines rated at 455-

hp, while the T880 tractors are rated at 500-hp, all with Eaton UltraShift transmissions. As good as the Kenworth T880s are, said Valente, the service department is second to none. “I’ll be honest with you, the Kenworth trucks have been very good, but the service department is even better. I can’t say enough about them. New trucks are going to have an issue here and there. When I take a truck over to my Kenworth dealer, they troubleshoot it right away and get it back to us. It’s horrible when you

take your truck to another dealer and it sits there for two days just to find out that a cooling sensor failed and it could’ve been fixed in 20 minutes. That kind of Anthony Valente scenario doesn’t happen kind of company. When we started with Kenworth Northeast.” Valente said his maintenance purchasing Kenworths, we decidcosts have dropped by half since ed we’d run them for four or five the company started running years, trade them in, and keep recycling them because Kenworths Kenworths. “Going forward, we’d like to hold good value.” For more information about trade out for 10 new Kenworth visit trucks every year,” he said. “We Kenworth, used to be a run-em-till-they-drop www.kenworth.com. 

ALL Family of Companies Invests Big in Trucks, Trailers One of the value-adds of doing business with the ALL Family of Companies is that it employs its own fleet of 2,500 trucks and trailers to transport cranes throughout North America. This gives customers a critical edge in staying on schedule — in a business where time means big money — without having to rely on outside trucking companies. Now ALL Crane is bolstering that capability with acquisition of a massive haul of 212 new trucks and trailers. It’s a significant purchase that broadens the company’s ability to offer complete door-to-door crane service. The order includes 40 Peterbilt trucks, 12 Nelson RGN (removable gooseneck) trailers, and 160 new Manac drop deck trailers. Of the Manac trailers, 100 are 48-ft. (14.6 m) spread axle units, which can accommodate 20,000 lbs. (9,072 kg) per axle anywhere in the United States. The remainder consists of 50 tandem axles, four quad axles and six aluminum flatbeds.

The order includes 40 Peterbilt trucks, 12 Nelson RGN (removable gooseneck) trailers, and 160 new Manac drop deck trailers.

The majority of the Manac trailers (150 of the 160 total) are galvanized, continuing ALL

Crane’s investment in galvanizing rather than paint, which can extend trailer life at least twofold,

according to the manufacturer. Galvanized steel decks reduce maintenance and resist chips,

scratches and wear, particularly the corrosion caused by road salt and brine. Also, although ALL Crane is a Manac dealer, these 160 new trailers will be exclusively dedicated to the company’s own fleet. ALL Crane will take delivery of the entire order through the end of 2019, with units being strategically distributed across all three dozen branches of the ALL family. “This package demonstrates our continued commitment to investing in whatever it takes to get equipment to customers, wherever and whenever they need it,â€? said Jimmy Hill, senior logistics manager. “We are able to easily move cranes across the country or across town to keep customers’ projects on schedule.â€? ALL Crane’s specialized transport divisions have ICC authority in the 48 contiguous U.S. states and throughout Canada. Sales, Growth Outlook Drive Rototilt Factory Expansion With another year of busy growth for Rototilt Group, with increased sales and continued growth on the export markets, Rototilt foresees continued success and is expanding its factory in Sweden. “With the tremendous growth we are seeing in North America along with other emerging markets it is great to see the expanded factory investment commitment to meet the growing global demand for Rototilt tiltrotators,” said Gerry Mallory, general manager Rototilt Inc. Rototilt has more than doubled

its sales in five years and foresees continued strong growth. “We established Rototilt Inc. in 2007 and in the last couple of years the interest for the tiltrotator system is really picking up. In new emerging markets like Canada and the U.S. it takes time to convince excavating contractors of the tremendous time and labour savings alone with a Rototilt equipped machine. In the Nordic countries the first Rototilt tiltrotator was introduced in 1986 and today the concept is standard equipment that no one does without,” said Mallory.

The factory is being expanded to meet the growing global demand for Rototilt tiltrotators. The expansion will add about 32,291 sq. ft. to the existing factory in Vindeln, Sweden. This makes more room for machining tools and alters the flow in the factory.

With another year of busy growth for Rototilt Group, with increased sales and continued growth on the export markets, Rototilt foresees continued success and is expanding its factory in Sweden.

The factory expansion is motivated by demand for machines with smart functions, subsidiary establishment in France, UK and Germany and substantial interest in the Rototilt tiltrotator on the export markets with North America as one of the key markets. “The decision was based on our scenario forecast,” said CEO Anders Jonsson. “We’re gearing up for continued growth with the focus on Europe and North

Rototilt built a completely new factory in 2007 when the company had 42 employees. It now has more than 200 employees.

America. We expect to reach our capacity ceiling at the current factory within two years. This is why we are making this investment now.” The expansion will add about 32,291 sq. ft. to the existing factory in Vindeln, Sweden. This makes more room for machining tools and alters the flow in the factory. “It feels great to be able to do this,” said Tord Johansson, production manager at Rototilt. “We built

a completely new factory in 2007, and at the time, we were 42 employees here. We now have more than 200 employees and expanding the factory is solid proof that our export initiative has really taken off. We gain even more optimized processes for machining, painting and assembly so that we’re prepared for future production increases.” The goal is for the expansion to be completed by the end of 2019.

Lake Erie Portable Screeners Introduces Pitbull PB678 The Pitbull PB678 joins the company’s lineup as a smaller version of the Pitbull 148 static grizzly. The new grizzly’s designation — PB678 — references its 6-ft. deep, 7-ft. high and 8 ft-wide dimensions. The PB678 is just as durable as its 8-ft. deep by 14-ft. wide by 10-ft. high counterpart, and is able to withstand demanding applications and years of service with a rugged, tubular frame construction. The grizzly’s compact size offers excellent portability and is ideal for work with skid steers and backhoes. Applications include landscape and municipal work, as well as work on tight construction sites where compact equipment is required. The PB678 transportability also makes it an ideal rental unit. The Pitbull PB678 comes factoryequipped with 18 bars manufactured of 2-in. square steel tubing with a ¼-in. wall thickness. Set at approximately 2-1/2 in. minus spacing, the readily accessible bolt on attachment of the bars makes spacing adjustments to accommodate different materials sizes quick and easy. Additional bars may be added to change up the configuration to a minimum of approximately ½-in. spacing, or bars may be removed to facilitate screening of larger materials.

Seen here with its larger counterpart, the Pitbull PB148, the Pitbull PB678 features a large access opening for easy material removal.

Southern Asphalt, Hills Machinery Make Dynamic Team By Joe Barron CEG ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Recycling asphalt not only makes environmental sense, but, as Southern Asphalt of Conway, S.C., is proving, it makes good business sense, too. By using up to 20 percent recycled asphalt product (RAP) in his milling and paving operation, Nick Godwin, Southern’s coowner, is realizing significant cost savings in rock, sand and liquid — so much so, in fact, that he estimates his new Eagle crushing plant will pay for itself in two years. “We have two milling machines, and we do a lot of milling on highways before we pave,” Godwin said in an interview. “We mill the roads up, bring them back to the plant, crush it and then run it back through our asphalt plants.” The savings from recycling extend to Southern’s extensive work with concrete as well. “Whenever we crush concrete, we break it down to a base material,” Godwin said. “Instead of paying $15 to $20 a ton, we run it through our crusher, and it becomes a huge savings.” While Southern generates most of its recycled material from its own milling and paving jobs, Godwin accepts unwanted asphalt from other contractors who would normally pay a tipping fee at a landfill to discard it. He estimated that as much as 10 percent of his RAP is obtained this way. “For example, I got a phone call this morning, and somebody said they were taking up a parking lot, could I take the asphalt,” he said. “I said, yes, bring it here, and dump it in our pile — no charge.” Southern’s crusher, which was supplied

by Hills Machinery Company, the Eagle and Case dealer for the Carolinas, can process from 850 to 1,000 tons of material per day, although productivity is not its only virtue. “We like that it’s portable, and we can just back our truck up under it and move it,” Godwin said. “It’s all in one, instead of having a crusher and a screener — two different machines, it is diesel over electric which is quieter and saves on fuel. “Since we got it, the Eagle crusher has surpassed our expectations. Our salesman, Dee Alesandro, guided us though the different products Eagle offers and provided us with what meets our needs perfectly. “I’ll be on the phone with Dee two or three times a week, and the guys at Hills are right on top of everything. It’s been very good.” Godwin’s exacting standards are the result of a lifetime in the construction and paving industries. “I was born and raised in it,” he said. “I worked every summer through middle school and high school, and when I graduated high school I went straight to work.” Godwin’s grandfather founded Godwin Construction, and his father, Donald Godwin, grew up in the grading and paving business. Donald founded Southern Asphalt in 1992. These days, the company does business primarily in and around Dillon, Florence, Georgetown, and Horry counties, fulfilling contracts for the South Carolina DOT, as well as handling commercial and private work. Along with paving operations of approximately 500,000 tons annually, it also provides a complete grading operation. “We do it all,” Nick Godwin said.  CEG

Telsmith Welcomes Service Technician Matthew Vereb Home From Germany

Southeastern field service technician Matthew Vereb recently returned from a yearlong mission in Germany.

Telsmith Inc., a manufacturer of mineral processing equipment, recently welcomed back one of its southeastern field service technicians, Matthew Vereb, from a yearlong mission in Germany. Vereb started at Telsmith in 2016 as field service technician for the southeast territory, including Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi. Vereb joined the military in 2008 as a private first class, then became a staff sergeant, and is now a commissioned officer. He started his service technician career in 2006 when he worked for Oconee County Quarry in South Carolina and Hanson Aggregates in Georgia. During his time there, he worked on various pieces of equipment, including Telsmith. In 2016 he transitioned to a Telsmith field services technician and in January 2018, he temporarily left Telsmith for a year to help the Air Defense Artillery branch set up a new Army unit in Germany. To further his military career, he plans to attend the Basic Officer Leadership Course in Oklahoma in 2020. “The best part about working for Telsmith as a field service representative is that I get to meet new people every day and help the customer get back into operation by servicing their equipment,” Vereb said. “Telsmith has been very supportive of my military service and I look forward to many more years with the company.” For factory service support in the southeast, call Vereb at 205/5697256. To coordinate a service visit to your plant, call Telsmith Service at 800/765-6601 or email service@telsmith.com. For more information about Telsmith, call 262/242-6600 or visit www.telsmith.com. 

Agencies OK Funding for Va. Bridge-Tunnel The Hampton Roads Transportation Accountability Commission (HRTAC) approved a funding agreement with the Virginia Department of Transportation March 29 to deliver the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion Project — the largest transportation project in Virginia’s history. The project adds new interstate capacity and twin, twolane, bored tunnels along nearly 10 mi. of Interstate 64 between Hampton and Norfolk. All I-64 projects under construction in the region today have been made possible through the HRTAC and VDOT partnership. The Project Agreement for Funding and Administration (PAFA), approved by HRTAC at a special commission meeting in Chesapeake, commits $3.56 billion for the I-64 HRBT expansion work, an amount to be paid through the Hampton Roads Transportation Fund from regional sales and gas taxes. The agreement means HRTAC will fund 95 percent of the project. Other project funding includes $200 million from the commonwealth’s Smart Scale program and $108 million from VDOT to fund the replacement of the South Island Trestle Bridges in Norfolk. “The PAFA we are authorizing today would not be possible without unprecedented cooperation between HRTAC’s local and state leaders, VDOT and the Commonwealth Transportation Board,” said HRTAC Chairman Michael Hipple. “Together, we have worked to provide regional solutions and partnerships that ensure future congestion relief and connectivity throughout the region.” VDOT Commissioner Stephen C. Brich commended HRTAC for making critical infrastructure investments that

will improve travel time reliability and safety, promote economic growth throughout the corridor and enhance the quality of life for all Hampton Roads residents. “We are one step closer to constructing the HRBT Expansion Project, and HRTAC has been a committed partner in advancing this generational project,” said Brich. Hampton Roads Connector Partners (HRCP) is the design-build team selected to deliver the project by Nov. 1, 2025. A construction contract, which contains an early completion incentive, was expected to be executed in early April. A groundbreaking ceremony for the HRBT Expansion Project was also scheduled for April. “HRTAC, the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization and VDOT are solving our region’s highway congestion by moving highway improvement projects forward at an unprecedented pace,” said Kevin Page, executive director, HRTAC. The HRBT improvements will occur in the cities of Norfolk and Hampton. “With over one billion dollars of regional funding already invested by HRTAC in congestion relief projects under construction by VDOT, HRTAC’s funding commitment to the HRBT expansion is truly another major milestone for Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth,” said Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Alexander. “The nearly 200 lane miles of new and rehabilitated interstate construction currently underway is proof we are just beginning to show what Hampton Roads can do to help solve its transportation problems,” said Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck. 

Rescue Renovation’s Kayleen McCabe to Headline 47th Annual SEAA Convention The Steel Erectors Association of America announced that Kayleen McCabe, the winner of DIY Network’s Stud Finder competition and longtime host of TV’s Rescue Renovation, will headline the association’s 2019 convention program. The 47th Annual Convention and Trade Show will be held April 24 to 26, 2019, in Charlotte/Concord, N.C. McCabe is a licensed contractor and industry ambassador. Her work focuses on tightening the skills gap, encouraging women to enter a male-dominated field and showing alternative paths to the traditional college route. During her presentation, “Trades in the 21st Century,” she will share her story and discuss the need to restore dignity to crafts as a profession. “I starting taking the SAT, ACT in 7th grade — on level with super nerd. All through high school it was AP classes, and college prep. But it wasn’t anything that made me happy. As I was about to graduate, the counselor asked me what I was going to do. I said I wanted to be a welder. There is something magical about being under a hood…” said McCabe. After dropping out of college and taking a rambling career path that ultimately led her to a successful career in do-it-yourself television, McCabe learned yet another truth. “The fallacy of do-it-yourself TV shows is that it gives the impression that someone with no skill or training can remodel a kitchen in the time it takes to have a three-course meal. I’m a smart person, but I didn’t get the Pythagorean Theorem until I was on a job site for the first time.” “I want people to know that there are lifelong opportunities, and careers that blossom into other things in commercial and industrial construction. Yes, it takes training on par with a bachelor’s degree,” she said. But the benefits are that the money is great, and the work is rewarding, she explained. In addition to the keynote presentation by McCabe, attendees can attend other sessions for managers or field level personnel, visit the Trade Show where exhibitors will have live equipment demos, and participate in networking activities. Attendees also can participate in the George R. Pocock Memorial Golf Tournament, fishing on

Brent Wise, co-owner and COO of Tech Safety Lines Inc., is a veteran of the Dallas Fire and Rescue Department. He will discuss employeebased rescue teams, creating a safety plan in emergency situations and how ERT training can create a quality rescue program. Rigging Refresher. Kevin Benner, rigging trainer and field sales representative of the Indusco division of Mazzella Lifting, will address often overlooked rigging problems. Selecting the Right Boom Lift for the Job. Craig Edwards, VP of national accounts of JLG Industries Inc., will speak about using aerial work platforms for steel erection and welding at height. He will share tips for maximizing productivity and safety, identifying the right people and equipment for the job, and understanding how new ANSI standards changes affect the jobsite and selection of equipment. Developing Your Talent Pipeline.

Gregg Schoppman, a principal with FMI Corp., specializes in best practices for productivity and project management, and was recognized as one of the Top 25 Consultants in 2014 by Consulting magazine. He will help attendees explore recruiting strategies, what to look for during the recruiting process, and how to discover common mistakes contributing to poor employee retention. Reskilling the Workforce of the Future. Peggy Smedley is an awardwinning journalist, having just won the ASCE Excellence in Journalism Award for her achievements in enhancing the public’s understanding of the impact of civil engineering. She will speak to labor opportunities the construction industry is missing, how contractors can entice Gen Z workers, and technology that reduces the worker shortage. Projects of the Year. Panel discussion and presentation of award-winning structural steel construction projects in four contract classes enlightens members as to some of the most creative, efficient, and dramatic work being done today. What’s AISC been up to? Todd Alwood, director of certification of the American Institute of Steel Construction, will update attendees on programs, resources and market activities. From SpeedCore to tariffs to Student Steel Bridge Competition, and the latest AISC publications. 
