When it comes to heavy equipment, reliable hydraulic system performance is critical to productivity and profitability. A proper understanding of the hydraulic fluid, and its role in the efficient performance of the hydraulic systems of equipment used in off-highway, construction and utility work is the basis of optimizing the contractor’s maintenance dollar, say hydraulics experts. “The main issue we see over and over in our business is lack of cleanliness around hydraulics,” said Ivan Lavy, owner of Lavy Enterprises, an equipment repair, maintesee HYDRAULICS page 32
Lack of protection from external contaminants can negatively affect hydraulic fluid and shorten equipment life.

Maintenance: Operation, Storage in Cold Weather Climates By Keith Kramlich SPECIAL TO CEG
Winter is coming. Whether you plan on using your equipment or storing it away for the season, it is critical the machines are properly prepared. Use this guide to help make sure your equipment starts right back up when springtime blooms. Operation Freeze: Using Your Equipment in Sub-Zero Temps Many operators capitalize on their equipment investment by using it year-round. To ensure that investment runs reliably throughout the coldest months, it is important to take basic maintenance measures by considering: The Right Fluids In cold climates where the temperature gets close to or below freezing, the first step is ensuring the engine oil, coolant and diesel fuel in the machine are suited for cold weather operation. The engine oil should be the correct viscosity for the expected ambient temperature as outlined in the machine operator’s manual. The engine coolant mixture should also be checked to ensure the mixture is adequate. Additionally, using #1 diesel fuel or a winter blend helps prevent the fuel from gelling in extreme cold. Avoid Freezing Lines In all climates, the operator should drain the water out of the fuel/water separator daily to prevent damage to the high-pressure fuel system and engine. However, this is even more critical during the winter. In cold months, excess water in the fuel can freeze in the lines. This causes the engine to stall or starve for fuel. If continued, this can cause damage to the fuel system, creating a costly fix. Once per month, we recommend draining the water from the fuel tank as well. The Hydraulic System Once the engine is protected, the next step is checking that the hydraulic system’s maintenance is up to date. Whether service is due or not, it is good practice to regularly inspect the hydraulic oil. Why? Because the condition of the hydraulic oil is just as important as the level.
To ensure that investment runs reliably throughout the coldest months, it is important to take basic maintenance measures.
If the oil is dark, looks burnt, or is any abnormal color, it should be replaced. As the oil ages and is exposed to high temperatures, the viscosity decreases. This leads to reduced protection of the vital hydraulic components. Drain the oil immediately if it appears “milky,” which is a sign of water in the oil. This can cause serious damage to the hydraulic system. Uh-Oh: Most Common Mistakes In addition to following the instructions above, operators using their equipment throughout the winter can reduce costly downtime by avoiding these common mistakes: The Undercarriage Material left in the undercarriage between the rollers, carriers and tracks can freeze overnight, preventing the rollers and carriers from properly spinning when the operator goes to use the machine the next morning. The roller can also develop flat spots. Do this: Clean the undercarriage out after each use.
Parking Overnight With freezing temperatures overnight, the tracks can freeze to the ground. Debris also can freeze to the cylinder rods, which can damage the wiper seals on the cylinders. Do this: Park the machine on a dry area and clean any exposed portion of the cylinder rods. Full Bore at Startup Increasing the RPM too quickly in cold climates can cause engine damage. This is due to the lack of oil pressure to certain components such as the turbocharger. The machine should idle at startup so the oil can circulate and get to the proper operating temperature. Do this: Let the engine idle for five minutes or so, then gradually increase rpm. Also ease in working the hydraulics. Ether or Starting Fluid Never use ether or starting fluid. If an operator thinks starting fluid is necessary, something is likely wrong with the engine or the block heater wasn’t used. This fluid causes a rapid increase in compression and can cause the piston to crack or
melt, among other failures. A block heater will keep the coolant warm and helps the engine start much easier the next morning. Do this: Have a block heater installed and plug the equipment in overnight. Glow plugs or a grid heater are also great functions to use throughout the winter (if equipped). Covering the Radiator It is common practice to put a cover over the radiator to keep the engine warm in winter. Despite the below-freezing ambient temperature, an engine can still overheat if the cooling system is compromised. Do this: Clean the radiator of debris and make sure it gets adequate air flow. Warning Signs It is crucial to pay attention to the warning signs. Look for signs such as the hydraulics making odd noises, flashing engine or hydraulic temperature warning lights, or any audible alarms. Do this: Be alert and stop working to assess the situation.
A Checklist for Winterizing a Machine for Storage The easiest way to ensure a machine comes out of storage without skipping a beat is to create a checklist. For starters, machines should be stored in a dry, dust-free environment for the duration of the offseason. This helps keep dust and moisture from settling in the important components and electrical connections. Another option is to park on wooden planks and cover the machine with a waterproof tarp. It also is wise to keep the equipment out of direct sunlight. Constant temperature changes can cause condensation to form on the metal parts, which can then freeze and cause damage to internal components. Don’t have time to make a checklist? We made it easy for you: • Drain water from the fuel tank and water separator. • Fill fuel tank with fresh fuel. • If close to a maintenance interval, change engine oil, engine filter and hydraulic filters. • Check coolant condition and level. Replace with long-life coolant if coolant condition is inadequate. • Properly lubricate all grease points. • As much as possible, retract all cylinders so the rods are not exposed. • Apply rust-inhibiting oil or grease to any exposed portion of the cylinder rods to prevent rust or pitting. If you aren’t able to retract all cylinders or apply rust-inhibiting oil to the cylinder rods, we recommend starting the machine every 30 days and working the hydraulics so that the cylinder rods get coated in hydraulic oil. • Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. If freezing is a possibility, remove the battery and place it in a warmer area. • When removing the machine from storage, follow the procedure outlined in the operator’s manual. Extreme temperatures are tough on machines. Protect your biggest assets with a little preventative maintenance. Your bottom line will thank you in the long run.

Phase 3, awarded to Gilchrist Construction, is an $87.7 million project that will widen I-10 from four to six lanes between LA 328 in Breaux Bridge to LA 347 near Henderson.
Phase 3 of Interstate 10 Widening Project Under Way in La. By Lori Tobias CEG CORRESPONDENT
The third phase of a much-needed, long overdue project to widen Louisiana’s Interstate 10 in Lafayette and St. Martin’s parishes got under way in November. It’s part of a $300 million project ongoing since 2017. The freight corridor has seen a large increase in traffic in recent years, driven by a healthy economy and significant tourism, according to Louisiana Department of Transportation spokesman Rodney Mallett. “This is a multi-modal state,” Mallett said. “We have the port, freight traffic and we have a lot of pass-through traffic coming through New Orleans, going to Texas and Florida. We believe the area we are talking about will have 105,000 vehicles per day by 2035. “We’ve addressed the widening of this,
the need for repaving — this is the original pavement —in statewide plans for many, many years. It wasn’t until we got the new governor, John Bel Edwards, who got the federal funds and looked for other funding to do these things, that we were able to move forward.” Phase 3, awarded to Gilchrist Construction, is an $87.7 million project that will widen I-10 from four to six lanes between LA 328 in Breaux Bridge to LA 347 near Henderson. The 4.5-mile stretch sees 70,000 vehicles daily. The project also will involve removing two existing bridges over Melvin Dupuis Road and replacing them at ground level. “It costs a lot to build a four-lane interstate bridge, adding all those extra lanes, whereas Melvin Dupuis Road doesn’t have all that much traffic,” Mallett said. “They’ll build a small two-lane bridge over Dupuis Road instead of a major interstate bridge. The
Gov. Edwards said the expansion “will not only bolster the region’s ability to handle the heavy traffic but will also help grow the economy of this area and the state.”
bridge for that road will be cheaper and better for everybody.” Additionally, 54-in. concrete median barriers will be installed in portions along the project corridor, as well as raised markers and rumble strips. “This phase is part of a larger project to widen and provide nearly 15 miles of new pavement from I-49 to the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge,” said Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Secretary Shawn Wilson at the October groundbreaking. “When completed, the 2 percent of poor or very poor pavement on I10 from state line to state line will be less than 1 percent. This expansion is another example of what can be accomplished when we have an administration that makes infrastructure and the transportation needs of residents a priority.” The first project is 7.1 miles along I-10 from I-49 to LA 328. It began in May 2017
after the state received a $60 million FASTLANE grant from the Federal Highway Administration. The $124 million project is set for completion in April 2020. It includes adding new lanes in each direction and a 16ft. shoulder, as well as the widening of five bridges and overpasses. Currently 60,000 vehicles travel that stretch per day. The second part of the project widens 2.4 miles from LA 347 to the Atchafalaya Bridge. That work began in July 2017 and is scheduled for completion in 2020. It includes the addition of two roundabouts on the ramps leading to and from LA 347. More than 52,000 vehicles travel the highway, also a freight corridor, each day. Gov. Edwards said the expansion “will not only bolster the region’s ability to handle the heavy traffic but will also help grow the economy of this area and the state.” The third and final phase is expected to be finished in 2022. CEG
By 2035, Louisiana state transportation officials believe this stretch of I-10 will be traveled by 105,000 vehicles per day.

HP2X Construction believes the next wave of machines for confined workspace jobs are purpose-built designs, like Fiori self-loading mixing systems and articulated site dumpers.
HP2X Construction and HP2X Equipment are sister companies based in Cleves, Ohio, serving the Cincinnati area, Indiana and Kentucky.
Fiori Reversible Equipment Has HP2X Anticipating Future A switchyard expansion job for a utility customer required at least a year-and-a-half commitment working around difficult job site limitations. Complicating factors including energized high-power overhead electrics, OSHA clearance requirements and narrow access to the work area left little room for machinery. Jason Lapp, HP2X Construction project manager and estimator, said his crews will often use skid steers or rent cement buggies to move material and cement at confined job sites like those described. Since moving material that way on this job would take way too much time, they went looking for larger volume site dumpers. Enter in the Fiori D40 Dumper Soon they discovered the Fiori product line of equipment. Harvey Pelley, HP2X vice president and co-owner, said he knew immediately that the Fiori D40 dumper was perfect for this job. It is the smallest dumper in the Fiori line: a 4WD, diesel-powered dumper with an articulated body. It has an 8,818-lb. loading capacity, yet at its broadest point is just 7.8 ft. wide. Other brands offered site dumpers with similar features, such as a 180-degree pan rotation that enables an operator to dump to the left or right of the vehicle, as well as straight off the end. None, however, offer reversibility. An enclosed, climatecontrolled cab is only available as an option on their models at extra cost. These are both standard features in the Fiori product line. The cab was an especially attractive feature for HP2X. “We work in Ohio,” Pelley said. “Winters can be harsh here, especially driving around in an open vehicle at 20 degrees.” Pelley promptly purchased a D40 from Dominion Equipment Parts. Dominion introduced the Fiori line to North America in 2016. Headquartered in Richmond, Va., and perhaps better known as a manufacturer and distributor of rubber tracks, Dominion provides sales, service and product support from seven regional locations in addition to its Richmond headquarters — including one in Cincinnati,
Ohio, not far from HP2X’s facilities in Cleves. Reversibility Enhances Safety, Lowers Cost The most distinctive feature of a Fiori site dumper is its reversibility. The entire operating station inside the cab pivots, allowing the driver to swing the seat and controls around to face the direction of travel. In a sense, the operator is always driving “forward” while traveling to and from the loading and dumping points. Its reversibility has been well received for how it enhances worksite safety. Lapp said many of HP2X’s customers require a spotter, or a “backer,” whenever an operator backs up a rig. The unit’s reversibility means they don’t need one. “And that means you’re not paying for two people to operate a machine, one just standing there for eight hours watching,” he said. The D40 dramatically improved HP2X’s operational efficiency so that within two weeks they bought a second one. “I think at that point we already had the largest Fiori fleet in all of North America,” Pelley said. Using their reversible site dumpers, HP2X finished the job two weeks ahead of schedule.
Reversibility enhances safety and eliminates the cost of another laborer to act as a spotter while backing up a rig.
Self-loading, Automated Mixer Then HP2X invested in a DB460 concrete batch vehicle. It is a 4WD self-loading cement mixer system with fourwheel steering and a drum that can be oriented anywhere along a 240-degree arc. Like the Fiori site-dumpers, it features reversibility of travel. Although the DB460 bucket makes it easy to manually load cement by the bag, they also purchased a mobile horizontal cement silo, increasing operational efficiency for bigger jobs. “The mixer system is like having a mobile batch plant at a fraction of the cost of building, operating and maintaining its own,” Pelley said. “The cost just to build a plant could run at least a half million dollars.” He ballparked cement trucks at a quarter million each. Jobs that HP2X can use its Fiori mixer system eliminate the need for a batch plant, cement trucks and transfer vehicles altogether. HP2X can make up the exact batch size needed for a specified mix design right at the job site, complete with a printed batch ticket. It also means they don’t have to work around a plant’s operating hours. Work can be done at night if a job calls for it. The ability to adjust batch size saves HP2X money by reducing waste, and there are no partial batch fees. Plus, they can make up their batches at a significantly lower cost per yard than they can order them delivered. To put it another way, HP2X can now pay itself to mix and deliver cement for every yard it pours. The savings represent a competitive advantage for bidding jobs. Automated Precision HP2X put the system to work on its first job, making up precast work for a soldier pile and lagging job in its own yard. Mixing is an automated process. “Get your mix dialed in,” Lapp said, “and it’s all push-button after that.” Once HP2X has a mix fine-tuned, it’s added to the onboard computer’s memory. From that point on, the operator simply selects it see FIORI page 28

Warrior Tractor Holds Retirement Party in Graysville, Ala. Warrior Tractor & Equipment Company celebrated the career of John Fore at their Graysville, Ala., branch on Jan. 17. Family, friends, co-workers and company ownership all turned out to celebrate Fore’s official retirement. Approximately 200 people turned out for the celebration and enjoyed a catered catfish fry. Fore’s career spanned a total of 54 years. A plaque at the ceremony put this into perspective: 54 years, 654 months, 2,843 weeks, 19,735 days and 473,640 hours! When Fore got out of high school he went directly into the Navy and started working on engines. He’s been doing engine and service work ever since. Warrior Tractor General Manager & Graysville branch manager, David Pearson, stated to the crowd that, “A lot of our success and a lot of our customer’s success is thanks to John. He knows how to fix machines and he knows how to teach others to fix machines.” Owner Gene Taylor spoke and voiced his appreciation for everyone who came out to the retirement celebration. “John’s a great person who you can depend on,” Taylor stated. “We’re proud to have had him for over 30 years. His experience went a long way and he was a great team leader.” Taylor went on to give great praise to the entire staff at Warrior Tractor. “We’ve been a real lucky bunch to have had
employees to stay with us for as long as they have,” he said. “Our employees are the best asset we have, and we just appreciate all of them. They’ll work 24/7 if you need them to and it’s a privilege to have had a guy like John running our operation here and are proud to have had him. We wish him well in his retirement.” During the speeches, Taylor and Pearson presented Fore with a 150 as a “little token of appreciation”. Many attendees looked puzzled and could be seen whispering “a 150?” Turns out it was a Ford F150 pickup that was bought brand new back in 2016 as a company truck for Fore and is now gifted to him as his personal truck. Fore started in the Pelham, Ala., branch as service manager in the late ‘80s and is now retiring as service manager from the brand-new, just built in 2019, Graysville, Ala., branch. When asked about some of the more notables in his career, Fore said that taking on the Hitachi line back in 2002 was a huge challenge and a huge reward. “We were assembling big coal mining Hitachi machines including the 1200, 1900 and 3600s,” Fore continued. “The first 3600 we put together, the customer ran the machine for only about 530 hours and sold the machine to a company in Australia for quite a bit more than what he bought it for. So, we were quick to get back out to the same site dismantling
the machine and loading it up on trucks and sending right back to the Port of Savannah. This customer ordered another 3600. When it came in, we were right back to put that one together for the very same customer.” Some of the most significant changes that Fore has seen during his time in the industry is that machines have gone from being all mechanical to the modern day machine that is completely electronic and computerized. “Back when I started, the only thing electrical was the battery, the starter, the alternator and the dash lights,” Fore said. “You had to pull a lever or multiple levers, and that’s how you got things to work.” When asked about what he will do in retirement, Fore stated: “I don’t fish, I don’t hunt, I don’t golf. All I’ve ever done is work. My basement needs to be finished off, so I think that’s the first thing I’m gonna do. After that, I’m flying out West for a while to do some driving and sight-seeing.” In his departure, Fore said that first and foremost that he wanted to thank the Lord for his health. He went on to thank Mr. Taylor who entrusted him with a lot of responsibilities, including all of the mining machines. He concluded by saying, “To my co-workers, they’ve done a great job and are the backbone of this operation. To my customers, I have enjoyed my personal relationship with each and every one of you.”
Warrior bought this Ford F150 brand new as a company truck for John Fore back in 2016. They signed over the title to him as a special presentation on Jan. 17, 2020.

AASHTO Joins Effort to Get Funding for Automated Speed Enforcement The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials joined eight other organizations as signatories to a letter sent on Dec. 20 to Congressional committee leaders that seeks the allowance of federal funding for automated speed enforcement of work zones. “Speed zone enforcement in work zones is effective at reducing speed, but when carried out by a law enforcement officer, that person is placed at risk, too,” the letter — authored by the National Safety Council — argued. The use of automated enforcement systems in work zones can reduce speeding and by extension the crashes, fatalities, and injuries it causes — noting that Maryland witnessed an 80 percent reduction in work zone speeding violations and a nearly 50 percent reduction in work zone fatalities by deploying automated enforcement technology. Yet the letter noted that some states lack resources to implement such technology; a problem that would be

Tributes Paid to JCB Employee Who Passed Away at Age 86 Tributes have been paid to a former JCB employee who joined the company as a teaboy and rose through the ranks to become a director. Bill Hirst, who was the third person recruited by JCB in 1947, passed away Jan. 5th at the age of 86. JCB Chairman Lord Bamford led the tributes to the man who joined JCB as the company was in its infancy. “Bill and his generation helped my father to build a company which became a real force in the world of construction equipment. Bill was very proud to have worked for JCB and will be

remembered by many, many people from the early days of the company. I’d like to offer my condolences to Bill's wife Jean and all her family at this very sad time,” Bamford said. Mr. Hirst, the fourth of eight children, joined JCB as a 14year-old tea boy when he left St. Joseph’s School in Uttoxeter, where he had been Head Boy. He was recruited on a salary of £1 a week when the company was based at stables at Crakemarsh, 3 miles down the road from JCB’s World Headquarters at Rocester. And it was Mr. Hirst who was instrumental in the relocation to Rocester in 1950 to the site of a former cheese factory. He knew JCB Founder Joseph Cyril Bamford was searching for a new location for a factory and suggested the Rocester site — because it was closer to home and meant he could spend an extra 10 minutes in bed each morning. Mr. Hirst started his National Service in 1951 as was posted as a Royal Military Policeman to Kenya, returning to JCB two years later. He married his wife Jean in 1955 and the couple had four children. On his return to JCB, Mr. Hirst completed 10 years as welding foreman, five in research and then joined the service and spares department at Rocester as service engineer, later becoming warranty and final inspection manager. He was awarded the MBE for services to export in the New Year’s Honours List of 1975 and became technical services director in 1981. Mr. Hirst retired in 1991. He was a staunch supporter of the Royal British Legion and served as President of the Uttoxeter branch in retirement. Speaking on JCB’s 65th anniversary in 2010, Mr. Hirst said: “I am proud to have been part of JCB — it’s been my life.”

HP2X Encouraged to Become Authorized Fiori Dealer Pelley said he and his wife, Jill Pelley, president and majority owner of HP2X Construction, believe so strongly in the reversible equipment that they founded a sister company in 2018 to sell them. HP2X Equipment is an authorized Fiori dealership, making its product line available to other contractors and offering full-service sales, financing, technical support, training and consultation. “That we use them in our own construction business makes us a unique kind of dealer,” Lapp said. HP2X Equipment offers much more than sales and product support. They are application experts who know the capabilities of these machines firsthand and are fellow contractors interested in forming long-term relationships. Although the Fiori brand is still unknown to many in the industry, Pelley believes it to be a wave about to sweep through the North American market. HP2X Equipment is now positioned to help the local industry get out in front of it — never having to look back over its shoulder.

Complete 540 Seeks to Ease Traffic Around N.C. Capital TRIANGLE from page 1
With the goal of reducing the usual heavy traffic around North Carolina’s capital city, work has begun to extend a substantial portion of the Triangle Expressway on the southside of Raleigh. Known as the Complete 540 project (and, secondarily, as both the Southeast Extension and N.C. 540), the new toll road construction will be done in two phases, the first of which broke ground in mid-November. The first phase of the highway build will run 18 miles east-southeast from N.C. Highway 55 Bypass in Apex, just west of Raleigh, to Interstate 40 south of the city. Hopes are this new six-lane roadway will be open to traffic in 2023. The final section stretches north-northeast from there to U.S. 64/U.S. 264 (Interstate 87) in Knightdale, due east of Raleigh. This portion of the project, however, will probably not begin construction until at least 2027. In total, the two-part Southeast Extension will be 28 miles long and is budgeted at $2.2 billion. The project’s financing will come through toll revenue bonds and a low-interest loan from the USDOT. The extension also will connect with the existing 42-milelong U.S. 540 around the north side of Raleigh to complete the Triangle Expressway (aka 540 Outer Loop). And on the day the second phase is open to traffic, the circle around Raleigh, as the old spiritual says, will finally “be unbroken.” Area residents will undoubtedly sing praises due to the fact the Triangle Expressway has been under construction at various times since 1992. A Needed Solution for the Triangle With the steady growth of the Triangle, which includes the cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, as well as several major suburbs and the important Research Triangle Park (RTP), state officials are confident that Complete 540 will provide a definitive answer to the area’s often headacheinducing traffic jams. Located in the heart of the loop, RTP

is the largest research and development park in the nation and lies adjacent to the eastern end of the Southeast Extension. Car and truck congestion along the Interstate 440, I-40, N.C. Highway 42, N.C. 55 and Ten Ten Road corridors eastsoutheast of Raleigh are in dire need of the Complete 540 project to ease their traffic nightmares. According to Logen Hodges, senior public involvement representative and spokesman of NCDOT’s North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA), two primary goals have been established for the Complete 540 project. “Each are based on general transportation challenges in the Raleigh area and specifically, more localized needs,” Hodges explained. “The first purpose is to improve mobility within or through the area during peak travel periods, while
Site prep includes moving over 10 million cu. yds. of earth, along with doing more than 150,000 LF of pile driving.
the second is to reduce forecasted congestion on the existing roadway network within the project area. The secondary goal, obviously, is to improve the linkage in the regional roadway network by completing the 540 Outer Loop around the greater Raleigh area — something that has been sought by area planners for more than 40 years.” Hodges added that the state expects construction of the remaining link to benefit local commuters living south and east of Raleigh, as well as motorists making longer trips through the Triangle. The current phase of the Southeast Extension will connect the suburban towns of Apex, Cary, Clayton, Garner, Fuquay-Varina and Holly Springs, along with Raleigh and the RTP. When both phases are complete — probably in about 10 years — the extension will enable a direct connection from I-40 in southwest Durham to I-40 to U.S. 64/U.S. 264 east of Raleigh. The new extended roadway will be a tolled highway with three 12-foot lanes in each direction. Motorists will be able to travel within a 70-mile-per-hour speed limit, at least when traffic allows. Three Contracts Awarded for First Phase NCDOT awarded the first of three major contracts to the joint venture consisting of Flatiron Constructors and Branch Civil, with Gannett Fleming as the lead design firm. This part of construction will extend the existing Triangle Expressway eastward for roughly 4.3 miles from the N.C. 55 Bypass east to near Pierce Olive Road. The second contract further extends the roadway for 4.9 miles from east of Pierce Olive Road to just east of US 401. It is being built by a joint venture between Flatiron Constructors and Branch Civil, with HDR Inc. providing the design. Road work on another section of the first phase is being performed at a third point by the partnering of Lane see TRIANGLE page 34

nance and custom design specialist in New Carlisle, Ohio. Properly maintained and clean hydraulic fluid will keep components working for years, and sometimes for the life of the machine, he stressed. “Failure is nearly always because of contamination.” Extending Equipment and Fluid Life Paul Michael will be tackling the topic of “Hydraulic Fluid Properties, Efficiency, and Contamination Control” during next March’s IFPE 2020 in Las Vegas, Nev. Manager of Tribology Research at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Michael identified the three sources of contamination in a hydraulic system. One is built-in, meaning it occurs when the machine is assembled or repaired. The second source is ingestion from the external environment and the third is internally-generated contaminants. In his IFPE presentation, Michael will address the fundamentals of hydraulic fluids, how they function and their composition. Some of the more advanced technologies and fluids include synthetic fluids, fire-resistant hydraulic fluids and biodegradable fluids. In addition to outlining information on the nature of these fluids and how to validate their performance through standard testing, he’ll also discuss contamination control, how to assess contamination level in terms of particle count. He will present case studies that look at the debris that’s found in the hydraulic oil filters, in order to identify the root cause of machine problems. Michael also will address some advanced technologies, including the use of multi-grade hydraulic fluids and
advanced surface-active chemistries, which can improve the low-speed efficiency of hydraulic motors and reduce leakage flows throughout the hydraulic system. This is important in controlling energy usage and maximizing the productivity of the equipment, he said. “Getting the maximum benefit out of a high-quality hydraulic fluid that has a great deal of longevity potential requires an understanding of contamination control and filtration,” Michael explained during a pre-IFPE interview with the Association of Equipment Manufacturers. “It’s also necessary to understand the sources of contamination in hydraulic systems, as well as their impacts on a system.” Built-in contamination is a threat to a machine’s hydraulic system, said Michael, because when it happens, the contaminants are almost always metallic and large in size with the potential for doing damage to the system. Ingestion-related contamination occurs when hydraulic systems with cylinders that extend and retract are exposed to a change in environment. This change can draw in contaminants, such as water, moisture from water vapor, or particulates from the atmosphere such as sand, dirt or dust. Recalling a case of what could be considered extreme contamination related to ingestion from an external environment, Lavy said a customer misplaced the oil-fill cap on a wood chipper, and chose to use paper shop towels to plug it. “This resulted in the towel slipping into the tank, encasing the suction screen and bypass valve, and starving an expensive pump of the needed lubrication. Simply buying an inexpensive cap would have saved this company thousands of see HYDRAULICS page 60

When it’s time for the cranes to be brought in, he anticipates a combination of lattice boom crawlers and hydraulic cranes to swing into action along the new route. Each of the machines in use on the job will be a combination of contractor-owned and locally leased/rented equipment, he said. Several special features are also being built into the road project. Wirtgen Surface Miner Boasts Powerful Cutting Drum Unit Wirtgen’s 220 SM 3.8/220 SMi 3.8 surface miner selectively mines raw materials up to a cutting depth of 13.7 in. (35 cm) and a uniaxial compressive strength of 35 MPa. Due to its 12.4 ft. (3.8 m) wide cutting drum designed specifically for softrock mining, the compact surface miner achieves maximum productivity at low operating costs and is perfect for use in small to large mining operations. Efficient and Environmentally Sustainable Raw Material Extraction Selective extraction makes it possible to mine raw materials with a high level of purity. The material, which is extracted in an environmentally friendly manner without drilling or blasting, is continuously deposited behind the machine in a windrow and then loaded onto trucks with other equipment. In this context, refraining from drilling and blasting makes it possible to conduct efficient mining operations close to industrial sites and other infrastructure such as pipelines or high-voltage power lines, which ultimately results in the optimized exploitation of the deposit, according to the manufacturer. Powerful Cutting Drum Unit The cutting drum is designed specifically for demanding windrow applications in soft rock, such as coal or salt. Maximum cutting performance combined with the ideal use of engine power and low specific fuel consumption allows raw materials to be mined in an extremely cost-effective process. Six different adjustable cutting drum speeds ensure that the machine can be perfectly adapted to the material being extracted. This leads to a significant reduction in pick wear, minimal diesel consumption, and increased productivity, which translate into an impressive daily output and low cost per ton of extracted material. Reliable Operation and Safety Are the Top Priorities In surface mining, the continuous availability of the machine and its safe operation are of critical importance. This is why the surface miner’s components are designed to achieve a long service life, even under extreme conditions. For example, filters in all circuits and a pressurized hydraulic reservoir ensure maximum purity in the hydraulic system and, as a result, safe operations. The clean oil in turn prolongs the service life of the downstream components and thus increases the availability of the machine.
High daily outputs in windrows are no problem for the new Wirtgen 220 SM 3.8/220 SMi 3.8. With a cutting width of 12.5 ft. (3.8 m) and a cutting depth of up to 13.7 in. (35 cm), the 708 kW surface miner is perfect for soft-rock mining in operations of all sizes.
Spacious ROPS/FOPS Operator’s Cabin The 220 SM 3.8/220 SMi 3.8 also meets occupational safety requirements in surface mining due to the standard-equipped ROPS/FOPS operator’s cabin. The cabin features additional soundproofing and vibration isolation, allowing the operator to work for several hours without the risk of fatigue. The ergonomically designed and clearly arranged controls are integrated into the armrests of the driver’s seat, and all of the machine’s key functions are logically incorporated into the multifunctional joysticks. This means that the operator can operate the machine intuitively in just a few steps and fully concentrate on high-precision mining. The fully air-conditioned, large-capacity cabin also features generously sized windows, giving the operator a direct view of the cutting edge and with it, the results of their work. High-Precision Leveling With LEVEL PRO PLUS The LEVEL PRO PLUS leveling system has a proven track record in road construction and mining and is intuitive and easy to operate. A flat or inclined formation level can be created with absolute precision due to side plate scanning and the crossslope sensor. The machine also is ready to be equipped with GPS or laser control.
Due to the large-capacity operator’s cabin with an optional camera system, the operator has an excellent view of the machine and the surrounding work area. The generously sized windows also give the operator a clear view of the cutting edge.

MB Crusher: Reasons to Discover All-New Drum Cutters When it comes to drum cutters, their strengths and weaknesses would seem obvious. However, there are constant innovations for these types of machinery, which are essential in sectors that deal with digging, cutting, profiling, or reducing hard materials with “millimetric” precision. Equipment can be built specifically to be used on difficult construction sites or designed to operate in city centers, often on historic buildings, on bridges and performing excavation and demolition work where the hydraulic breaker can create excessive vibrations and every inch makes a big difference, both in terms of space and profitability. “Precision and timing are the two key factors in our line of work,” industry experts explain, “and few people realize the accuracy that is asked of us, and stringent constraints on space, regulations and machinery to which we must submit.” To get an idea of the delicate situations in which a precision drum cutter machine is required to operate, think of the demolition of
land, creating irrigation systems, levelling river beds, digging tunnels and milling wood, as well as profiling rock walls in quarries and mines, where they also can be used in underwater immersion situations. With 20 years’ experience in building innovative crusher buckets and screening buckets, Italian manufacturer MB Crusher has created a new concept of hydraulic drum cutter. “In our company’s DNA, there is a determination to improve the machinery to optimize work operations in building sites,” Diego Azzolin, production manager, said. “This is our mission and our working philosophy: we don’t put anything out on the market until we’ve found the most useful and profitable solutions for operators. “In addition to existing patents on MB equipment, we’ve recently dedicated ourselves to drum cutter machinery, designing a highly evolved and innovative new product. The line of MB Crusher drum cutters are in fact the only ones on the world market utilizing a direct drive twin motor system. This
Precision drum cutters can be used for the lowering and levelling of roads and bridges, where the surfaces being treated are asphalt and concrete, or profiling work in confined spaces for the creation of city ducts. Here, a Komatsu with an MB-R700 cutter works on a project in France. An MB-R800 demolishes concrete in Mexico.
buildings in high population areas that require the carving of foundation and concrete pillars, where spaces for green areas or new constructions can be recovered. Or the lowering and levelling of roads and bridges, where the surfaces being treated are asphalt and concrete, or profiling work in confined spaces for the creation of city ducts. In the agricultural sector, precision drum cutters also are indispensable for clearing and dredging
direct transmission dual motor system is protected by our unique patent, allowing for a differentiated distribution of force on the two drums. This provides an enormous advantage, since the power force is managed autonomously by the drum cutter according to the toughness and resistance of the material.” Moreover, customers can opt for a variety of drum and tooth kits according to the type of material
being processed. This new generation of standard drum cutters also adopts an integrated power boost to augment the power of the cutter head, which requires more force and obtains exceptional results. “Among the major issues we encounter on work sites,” say construction industry operators, “are torsions and vibrations on the operating machine arm, with consequent enormous costs due to wear. Not to mention noise and dust restrictions that protect city centres and highly populated areas.”
MB Crusher has taken care of this problem too. “Our unique automated control results in a no torsion system. Structural stress on the excavator’s arm is absorbed and drastically reduced, to increase precision and durability while benefiting cost savings and maintenance times,” the manufacturer said. “Specifically for construction sites in urban centers, we’ve also designed the dust suppression kit and drum cover kit, to reduce dust emissions and allow work to be
carried out in closed environments and areas with high vibration restrictions, such as in historical centres and highly populated areas.” “Yet another extraordinary innovation,” Azzolin added, “was introduced to help construction site managers deal with delivery time constraints. Our drum cutter heads are designed to be easily replaced on site, in less than an hour. Unthinkable until now. Indeed, this procedure required extended downtime to take the cutter to an authorized workshop. Being able to change the drum in just under an hour gives the construction site a strong competitive advantage.” To protect the machine’s central casing, specially designed wear plates have been applied, as well as a protective high-temperature reduction kit designed to lower the operated machinery’s oil temperature without altering its performance. “Handy and easy to use,” Azzolin said. “The all-new MB Crusher hydraulic cutters make work at construction sites more profitable, where precision cutting, maintaining depth, reducing waste and compliance with regulations are daily priorities. Like gigantic ‘scalpels’ that provide precision maneuvering where every centimeter has a productive value and cost.” The cutter rotation kit is designed specifically for road work and trench digging, allowing the machine operator to rotate the cutter directly from the cab without stopping the excavation work: an extremely beneficial operation in terms of time and effectiveness. What’s more, the cutting depth adjustment kit allows operators to set the trench depth, to remove only the necessary amount of material and nothing more, providing a significant reduction in waste disposal costs. Due to their high degree of precision, power and adaptability, the new MB hydraulic cutters for excavators, loaders and backhoe loaders are an innovative and determined response to excavation, demolition and profiling work, especially in urban sites, virtually eliminating the constraints and costs of downtime, waste management, maintenance and wear, according to the manufacturer.

Volvo Trucks Reaches 200,000-Unit Connectivity Milestone As a global leader in connectivity, Volvo Trucks is at the forefront of developing, testing and introducing commercially viable transport solutions equipped with modern technologies. The company announced a milestone of reaching more than 200,000 connected vehicles in North America on Oct. 28, 2019, at the North American Commercial Vehicle (NACV) Show in Atlanta, Ga. This figure is part of more than 560,000 connected trucks globally in the Volvo Trucks family, and is part of the greater total recently reached of one million connected vehicles in Volvo Group worldwide. “Over the past few years, marked improvements in connectivity have driven change and formed real-world opportunities in the trucking industry for safer, smarter and more sustainable operations,” said Ash Makki, product marketing manager, Volvo Trucks North America. “We are proud to reach this milestone, and will continue to expand and grow our connected solutions for our customers while driving the industry towards a more connected future.” The Volvo Trucks Uptime Center is a key aspect of offering customers the best in connected services with 24/7 live support behind the technologies, according to the manufacturer. Every dedicated professional at the Volvo Trucks Uptime Center is a well-trained Volvo Trucks employee. Realtime, seamless interaction between the expert personnel of Volvo Action Services and customer decision-makers and drivers optimize Volvo Trucks’ connectivity services. Volvo Trucks continuously investigates new opportunities and technologies with a vision to connect the bigger picture for customers now and in the future.
Volvo Trucks’ connectivity services are now available in more than 200,000 commercial vehicles in North America.
A Heritage of Innovation in Connectivity As early as 2012, Volvo Trucks introduced remote diagnostics, which enables customers to reliably transmit information to and from their trucks and monitor fault codes in real-time, delivering assessments and solutions based on severity. This allows for faster and more comprehensive diagnostics and repairs, while also providing fleets with information on driving habits, fuel usage, truck performance and more. The next advancement from Volvo Trucks was remote programming, which works hand-inhand with remote diagnostics and allows for over-the-air software and parameter updates to be made in a matter of minutes when the truck is in a stationary position with cellular service. These solutions served as the foundation of Volvo Trucks’ future technologies that are now included in its industry-leading connectivity offerings.
“As we continue to demonstrate our leadership position in connectivity, we strive to offer our customers the most advanced technology as quickly as possible.” Ash Makki
Volvo Trucks North America
Continuing forward, Volvo Trucks then announced the partnership with global analytics leader SAS, enhancing remote diagnostics with an advanced analytics platform and use of artificial intelligence for a more precise analysis of the truck. That same year, Volvo Trucks announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with transportation soft-
ware leader Trimble Transportation Enterprise to develop transportation management and fleet maintenance products and services. In the last year alone, Volvo Trucks has announced a number of new products and services further enhancing connectivity in its vehicles, including an expansion of parameter updates, its new dynam-
ic maintenance service and Geotab Drive. The Parameter Plus Package, allowing for up to 50 remote parameter updates annually per vehicle, was the first iteration of the subscription package enabling customers to reach peak performance while maximizing uptime. Volvo Trucks then expanded upon this with a new series of updates, providing customers with more than 250 parameters to choose from, complementing the Parameter Plus package. Next, Volvo Trucks introduced dynamic maintenance, a connected vehicle maintenance service intended to improve fleet operations efficiency through proactive maintenance planning. This service was designed in partnership with Noregon Systems to enable customized service plans at an individual-vehicle level to improve fleet management for its customers. And just recently, Volvo Trucks announced the introduction of Geotab Drive, a streamlined FMCSA-compliant electronic logging device (ELD), developed in partnership with telematics leader Geotab. The integrated, cloudbased system provides customers with a seamless solution to monitor and record accurate logs. Continued Legacy of Leadership “As we continue to demonstrate our leadership position in connectivity, we strive to offer our customers the most advanced technology as quickly as possible,” said Makki. “As amazing as cuttingedge advancements in connected technology can be, we know our customers will always be the most important factor in driving the industry forward, with the bigger picture in mind.”

Perdido Trucking Service Depends on Kenworth T880s Perdido Trucking Service LLC, headquartered in Mobile, Ala., is an aggregate hauler serving many customers throughout the state, as well as the Florida Panhandle, Mississippi and Louisiana. Established in 1982, the company is known for its timely deliveries and exemplary customer service, as well as its focus on safety and reliability. With a fleet of 145 trucks (mostly Kenworth), aluminum and steel dump trailers, and dry bulk pneumatic tank trailers, Perdido relies on its dedicated employees to provide superior customer service and on-time accident free deliveries. “We run predominantly Kenworth day cabs, T880s and T800s, said Huston Hollister, president of Perdido Trucking Service. “Our new T880s are driver friendly, no question about that. Drivers are very pleased with all the creature comforts, especially the extra roominess in the cabs. We have extremely low driver turnover and that’s due in part to the quality of our equipment. As an aggregate bulk hauler, Perdido specs every truck and trailer to maximize weight savings, equipping many T880s with the PACCAR MX-13 engine. “We don’t buy any units off the shelf, Hollister said. “Everything is to our specifications. We work as a team with our Kenworth dealer. They really understand our business. Since 2011, when Perdido purchased its first T800, the majority of its truck purchases have been Kenworth. “The knowledge of our dealer, Truckworx Kenworth, has been key, Hollister said. “We’ve spent a tremendous amount of time with them analyzing our telematics data. They show a genuine interest
in understanding our business and that’s important to us. Whether we’re spec’ing trucks or servicing them, Kenworth finds ways to save us money. Because of the demanding nature of aggregate hauling, Truckworx Kenworth operates a specialized maintenance program for Perdido. “There’s just real good chemistry between our two organizations, Hollister said. “They want to get to know our business, and that’s what I appreciate. They understand maintenance programs and aftertreatment systems. Probably 40 percent of our maintenance time deals with aftertreatment. We have more than 130 units running all the time and our fleet managers are in constant contact with the Kenworth shops every day.
While Perdido services the majority of its equipment at its own maintenance facility in Mobile, it relies on the Kenworth dealer network throughout the company’s service area. “Our trucks operate out of several locations in northern and southern Alabama, as well as the Florida Panhandle and the Mississippi coast,â€? Hollister said. “Truckworx Kenworth maintenance shops are located in all those areas, in Birmingham and Dothan, Montgomery and Mobile, among others. We’re in constant communications with all of them, all day long. Kenworth understand the needs of our fleet managers and that’s indispensable to running our fleet and business.â€? While the Kenworth dealer network helps keep Perdido trucks up and running, Hollister credits the company’s success to the dedication and professionalism of its people. “Our drivers have been with us a long time and are extremely dedicated,â€? he said. “They understand our system and what we’re trying to accomplish.â€? Going forward, Hollister said, the company business plan calls for purchasing about 30 new trucks every year. “We’re working on a four-year trade cycle. Once we reach four years and 350,000 miles, our cost of operations at that time, in our application, makes it the right time to trade. The resale value of Kenworths make that an easy decision for us,â€? he said. “We get excellent resale value with our Kenworth trucks.â€? See what drivers are saying at www.kenworth.com/drivers. 

and Anna Walker started the company in 1982 out of an office in a motel room along old Route 66 with just a single truck and three employees. Today, their son Mark oversees the company’s 230 employees who support a fleet of 170 trucks operating in all 48 contiguous states. An important aspect of TransLand’s business is sharing its success with the community through the donation of time, talents and financial support. TransLand designates certain trucks as community trucks, which raise money for every mile they travel delivering goods to customers. One of its most recent efforts supports Care to Learn, an organization that addresses critical food, hygiene and clothing needs for students who otherwise might not be able to be successful in school. “This notion of neighbor helping neighbor is important to all of our employees,â€? said Mark Walker, CEO of TransLand. “My parents set a good example for us over the years supporting causes they cared about, so that beautiful green Care to Learn Mack Anthem is an extension of who we are as a company.â€? Driver recruitment and retention are critical in today’s trucking industry, and TransLand’s Mack Anthem models have helped grab drivers’ attention. “Mack has been nice for the retention of drivers, as well as for the recruitment of drivers,â€? said Brian Baremore, vice president of operations, TransLand. “When we first started getting the Anthems here, we’d put one out by the road and get all kinds of people calling to ask ‘how can I drive that truck?’â€? Additional RoadLife 2.0 episodes will premiere throughout the summer and into the fall. Viewers can watch RoadLife episodes on roadlife.tv and Amazon Prime Video. Watch Out When Using New Oil — It’s Not Necessarily Clean, Experts Contend HYDRAULICS from page 32
dollars. I cannot stress enough how often contamination is the cause of an expensive repair that could have been prevented.” The third source, internally-generated contamination, results from wear or corrosion. Wear occurs in hydraulic hoses during operation due to their flexing. In pumps and motors, because of road conditions wear can occur in hydraulic seals and bearings with the motion of the cylinders. There are a lot of moving parts in a hydraulics system that can create wear. “Modern hydraulic oils are much better than the oils we used in the past,” said Michael. “We used to have 3,000-mile oil-change intervals on automobiles. Now every auto has at least 7,000 miles or more before an oil change is needed. Oil base ingredients and additives have been improved. The same can be said for hydraulics.” The life is double that of the oil we used to use on heavy machines in the past, he said. “So, if you can extend the life of hydraulic fluids you can reduce the economics as well as the environmental impact on your operations.” Proper maintenance of hydraulic breathers and filters is the key to preventing damage via contaminants in hydraulic fluid, he continued. It’s commonly thought that 75 percent of all damage to hydraulic systems is by contaminants. Yet, that’s not necessarily true these days because systems have improved exponentially, said Michael. “In the past, the heavy equipment industry was provided with filters that were very inefficient in their filtration process. Their efficiency in particle removal was not well defined in the past, and the difficulty for consumers was in selecting filters that could adequately predict the future of the system.” But now, with advanced filtration qualification methods, end users “can be assured you’re using a filter that can effectively protect your machine’s hydraulic system,” said Michael. With New Oil Comes Old Problems Oil equipment manufacturers report that machine warranty claims spike after an oil change. Michael addressed two factors to which the issue is attributed — one, the position of brand new oil and two, the process of transferring new oil. New oil is not necessarily clean, he explained. Oil is transferred from refinery to rail car, into storage tanks, a blending system, and then into drums where the end user can access it with a five-gallon pail. Through each step of manufacturing and distribution, there’s the potential for ingression of contaminants through dirt, sand and other elements. “New oil can be quite dirty when initially distributed into a plastic container or 55-gallon drum,” said Michael. One issue often reported by OEMs, is when customers want to ensure the purity of the hydraulic oil in new machines, whether they are selecting high-quality filters for machines and taking great care to prevent filter contamination. Manufacturers observe that when end users reach the maintenance point where they opt to change hydraulic oil, an uptick in warranty claims can be seen for hydraulic valves. Valves are susceptible to the negative effects of particles, said Michael. “First, keep in mind that used oil that is actually very

When heavy equipment hydraulics are properly maintained, and hydraulic fluid is kept clean, machine components will work well for years — often for the life of the machine. Equipment failure is nearly always because of hydraulics contamination, said hydraulics repair specialist Ivan Lavy of Lavy Enterprises.
clean and pure is often replaced with new oil that’s not nearly as pure. Second, one always should filter new oil into a machine when servicing it. If you’re topping it off with additional oil, or changing oil, you want to filter new oil into the machine,” he stressed. “It can be difficult to do that in some environments, so the process of transferring new oil into a machine can lead to ingression of contaminants.” One way technicians used to reduce this problem that’s been adopted by many OEMs is to install high-efficiency filters built into the fill line of the hydraulic reservoir so the oil cannot be put into the system without being filtered. “Manufacturers sometimes use hydraulic filler-strained caps in their reservoir designs. That’s not as effective at protecting the system as using a tank mounted return-line filter as the fill port to ensure the oil is purified. In instances where machines do not have a high-efficiency filter, the technician is advised to use a filter cart to transfer oil from drum into machine,” he said. “It’s best to use a filter cart with a highefficiency filter because the oil only passes through the filter once. In the past, a lot of filters used cellulose or paper filter media, but now polyester or fiberglass is often used instead. It’s a more controllable substance that is also longer lasting and has a higher dirt-holding capacity.” In addition to better filtering technology, better seal performance is being addressed these days by OEMs. Upgrades in the design of hydraulic seals over the years have been made, through the use of advanced sealing materials and lip designs, which have improved the effectiveness of hydraulic rod and piston seals, noted Michael. “Improvements in wiper designs also have helped reduce the detrimental effects of external contaminants on fluid life,” he added.
