In an effort to help relieve overcrowding within the Prince William County system, a new elementary school is being built in Dumfries,Va. Dubbed “Potomac Shores” until an official name is selected, the 19-acre project has not been without its issues early on. “We rarely, if ever, have a site that does not pose a unique challenge,” said Steven Walts, superintendent of Prince William County Public Schools. “While it is quite level now, that is not the way the Potomac Shores site started out. Solutions to such challenges require the school division’s construction team to work very closely with the civil engineers in planning the site, the architects in designing the structure and the contractors in building the school.”

The district has not yet been set for the new school, which will house roughly 850 students K-5. “The project is coming along nicely, thanks to the weather,” said Ron Whitten, principal. “It will be an honor and privilege to welcome students and parents to this state-of-the-art school.” Dee Thompson, Prince William County Schools supervisor of construction, said the new structure can’t open soon enough. “There is a shortage of seats in this area for elementary school students. After Financial Setback, $305M Future of Flood Miami Science Museum Rises Project Remains Murky in La.

MIAMI (AP) A new science museum in Miami is on target to open in the spring after surviving financial setbacks that threatened to derail the project. Workers are putting finishing touches on the Frost Science Museum along the Biscayne Bay waterfront downtown. About a year ago, things appeared less promising. After burning through $165 million in Miami-Dade County money for construction, the museum board was struggling to collect roughly $80 million in private pledges. A plan to use those pledges to get

bank loans failed. Instead, the county came through with about $45 million from a hotel bed tax earmarked for tourism and cultural projects. The museum also trimmed about $25 million in construction costs. Pharmaceutical billionaire couple Patricia and Phillip Frost also contributed another $4 million to cover cost overruns. BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Despite the flooding that struck south Louisiana in August 2016, prospects for a decades-old project aimed at protecting Baton Rouge area homes remain murky. The 12-mi. (19.3 km) structure is called the Comite (KOH'-meet) River Diversion Canal. It would siphon high water from the Comite River, sending it instead to the Mississippi River. see FLOOD page 66
