After years of planning and preparation, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture is moving forward with construction of a new metrology lab in Nashville. The roughly 12,000 sq. ft. (1,114 sq m) structure, located at the Ellington Agricultural Center, will offer the most current equipment and testing capabilities to ensure fairness in the marketplace. “The accuracy of calibration equipment used by businesses to install, maintain and repair scales, meters, pumps and other measuring devices is required to be
within a very small tolerance of state and federal standards,” said Randy Jennings, director of program operations for the Consumer and Industry Services division of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, which will manage the new lab. “Scales used to weigh a load of grain at a feed store, the grain moisture meter used to determine the moisture content of the grain or the fuel pump used to fill the truck delivering the grain will all have a connection to the metrology laboratory.” The Tennessee Weights and Measures Metrology Laboratory (TWMML)

Report: Deepen Mississippi River for Bigger Cargo Ships NEW ORLEANS (AP) The Mississippi River should be dredged to let three southeast Louisiana ports accept the enormous cargo ships built to take advantage of the Panama Canal’s expansion, the Army Corps of Engineers said. Many other U.S. ports either already
have completed similar projects or are trying to get them approved. Parts of the shipping channel from just south of Baton Rouge to the Gulf of Mexico are now about 42 to 45 ft. (12.8 to 13.7 m) deep. The plan calls for increasing that depth to 50 ft. (15.2 see RIVER page 22

Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced that financing is complete to build an additional two-lane tunnel under the Thimble Shoal Channel, west of the existing Chesapeake Bay BridgeTunnel (CBBT). The Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission will finance the $756 million project primarily through federal and state
bonds. “This new tunnel will expand capacity and improve safety for travelers who use the CBBT, as well as protect the economic competitiveness and quality of life of the Hampton Roads region,” said McAuliffe. “The CBBT is the only direct link between Hampton Roads
and Virginia’s Eastern Shore, making this facility a vital and convenient connection, supporting commerce in the region. I am proud to announce this expansion as part of our administration’s ongoing commitment to reducing congestion and spurring economic growth through see CHESAPEAKE page 40
