Future of Vehicle Fueling Will Jobs Follow Work From Federal EV Infrastructure Blueprint? By Lucy Perry
This month (June), the FHWA released a blueprint for states to develop half a million charging stations, part of the Biden administration’s goal of moving from gas- to electric-powered vehicles. The White House believes that in the process the plan will create jobs for steelworkers, electrical workers and laborers to build, install and maintain the network. The vision is the installation of EV fast-charging stations every 50 miles, give or take, across the country. A uniform system drivers can use anywhere they drive, much like the highway infrastructure system, is the end of the rainbow. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the administration wants a system that is accessible, user-friendly and available regardless of the type of vehicle or where the user lives.

Tennessee’s I-24 Smart Corridor Project to Tackle Congestion Facing growing vehicle congestion in Rutherford County, Tenn., work is under way again on the Interstate 24 Smart Corridor project designed to implement signal technology and roadway changes to give commuters driving between Murfreesboro and Nashville more predictable travel times. During a March presentation before the Rutherford Chamber of Commerce, Michelle Nickerson, a civil engineering manager for the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), explained the project’s current $45.8 million phase — a portion of the total $109.5 million budgeted for the enterprise — would reduce delays due to crashes and use centrally-controlled dynamic messaging systems to give drivers advance warning of delays ahead. “We are excited about the I-24 Smart Corridor project, because we believe it will help improve reliability and safety along [the interstate],” said Patrick Cammack, the Chamber’s executive vice president of economic development, after hearing Nickerson’s talk. “As prospective residents and businesses evaluate our community and region, seeing this public investment in infrastructure is more important than ever, especially in the midst of our strong projected growth.” Community Impact (CI), a local online news service in Murfreesboro, reported May 30 that work began in early April to install a total of 67 overhead gantries every half mile in both directions within a 28-mi. stretch of I-24 from Exit
81 at U.S. Highway 231/Church Street in Murfreesboro to Exit 53 at I-440 in Nashville. Further widening of the interstate is not financially feasible, according to TDOT, and does not permanently manage growing traffic. By late 2022, the transportation agency plans to activate electronic signs on the gantries giving drivers notice of lane closures, speed limit changes, and will suggest alternative routes around backups, said Rebekah Hammonds, the community relations officer of TDOT’s District 3, which includes Murfreesboro. “These improvements will not necessarily improve travel times, but they will make them more reliable,” she told the newspaper. “This makes your commute more like a train schedule, where it runs ‘on-time’ more often but does not necessarily make the train any faster.” Cutting Back On Traffic Jams Is Goal The I-24 project is intended to address traffic snarls in the area, where a 60 percent increase in vehicles trying to get through stretches of Murfreesboro-Rutherford County roadways has been recorded by TDOT since 2005, CI noted. Included in the first phase of the Smart Corridor project, which lasted from 2018-21, were extensions of on- and offramps, a change intended to ease speedups and slowdowns on and off I-24 with fewer crashes, according to Hammonds.
Tennessee Department of Transportation rendering
Overhead gantries featuring dynamic messaging signs are being erected to provide real time traffic information to motorists between Nashville and Murfreesboro.
She added that the installation of emergency pull-off areas should provide a safe median for disabled vehicles to get out of traffic, if possible, reducing the potential to block active lanes. A TDOT analysis of 2015 congestion data attributed 55 percent of traffic congestion to heavier traffic volume, and 27 percent to incidents such as accidents or breakdowns. “This helps to prevent the phenomenon of drivers tapping their brakes, which causes something called ‘phantom traffic jam,’ which is a slowdown of traffic not caused by bottlenecks or a traffic incident,” Hammonds explained. Managing an Integrated Corridor CI reported that the new signage displayed on the overhead gantry systems will include a red “X” to indicate lane closures, in addition to yellow arrows to alert drivers that they must exit a closed lane, and green arrows to indicate that a lane is clear. To prepare drivers for the use of this new signage, TDOT will produce videos about their meaning, according to Nickerson. With the extra information, TDOT said drivers should be able to respond appropriately to avoid accidents or follow a suggested detour. “The Integrated Corridor Management strategies will reduce the overall incident durations, which leads to shorter queues, and lowering the probability of secondary crashes,” Hammonds explained to CI. She added that by the end of 2022, transportation department engineers and technicians also will be gathering data regularly to get vehicle counts, record average speeds and collect other data to find areas for improvement. “Extensive data will need to be collected to definitively assess the improvements,” she noted. “In future years, the monthly, quarterly and annual data will be compared to quantify the improvements.” TDOT plans to hire a new analyst later this year to manage the I-24 Smart Corridor system between Murfreesboro and Nashville from the state’s Traffic Control Center. Technologies to Extend to Local Roads Around the end of 2022, further communication upgrades will allow TDOT to add the dynamic messaging signs onto Murfreesboro Road to provide updates about I-24 traffic, Hammonds said. That phase, scheduled to wrap up in 2023, would include introducing ramp-metering equipment to control the pace of vehicles exiting and entering the highway. Murfreesboro Transportation Director Jim Kerr told Community Impact that the cities of La Vergne, Smyrna, Murfreesboro and Nashville will each be able to veto TDOT’s requested signal timing adjustments based on local road conditions. “At least with the Smart Corridor project we will have some mitigation and notice if we choose to deploy a diversion,” he explained. With the area’s population continuing to grow, and the resulting traffic projected to keep pace, Kerr said he believes using technology will be less costly than widening. “Investing in traffic signal technology is an extremely good investment because it’s pennies on the dollar [as compared] to major road [building] projects,” he noted. “Don’t get me wrong, you need to do both, but you have to maximize what you get from your roadway system.

GP Rental Opens Unique Location to Serve Contractors By Eric Olson
nity to do so.” “Today, within walking distance of where we are standing, there is $2.2 billion of construction that we never have to leave the highway to reach,” he said. “In addition, there is The Yield, another bioscience project worth $200 million. That development is on Green Oaks Parkway, with the Fujifilm Diosynth project farther back off the road. Being close to these projects is going to be advantageous to us, and there is more work planned in the future for Holly Springs.” Rogers noted that the idea for the onsite GP Rental facility came from Greg Poole IV, who currently runs the rental operation for his family’s longtime equipment dealership.

At the construction site of a gigantic new biotech facility in Holly Springs, N.C., contractors now have quick-time access to a facility that can supply the equipment and services they need to keep the project running apace. GP Rental, the newly branded rental division of Raleighbased Gregory Poole Equipment Company, recently opened a temporary office and machine yard on the site where a $2 billion Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies plant is under construction in Holly Springs’ Oakview Innovation Park, southwest of North Carolina’s capital city. The ultramodern large-scale cell-culture facility is scheduled to open in 2025, where it will develop, produce, package and ship next-generation therapeutics, the Japan-based company announced in fall 2021. From this location, GP Rental will supply Caterpillar heavy equipment to the contractors working on the project. Additionally, the rental office will offer an assortment of Allied products, such as aerial equipment, light towers, power generator sets and other support equipment. The new GP Rental office and equipment yard, at 501 Green Oaks Parkway, near the intersection with Holly Springs New Hill Road, is an around-the-corner stop for the big-budget project site. Before, if the Fujifilm Diosynth builders needed equipment, they would have a lengthy wait as the nearest GP Rental facility was more than 20 minutes away — and that is without traffic, an unlikely drive time considering Raleigh’s notorious road congestion. Cat, Allied Equipment, Gear to Be Available According to Rob Jackson, director of sales of Gregory Poole, the decision to open GP Rental as a temporary office at the Fujifilm Diosynth construction site was always seen as offering a service to the builders. “We want to be able to supply [them] with as much Cat

equipment as we can, but also provide all the support equipment they may need.” Having just gotten electrical power at the GP Rental trailer the last week of May, Jackson said that the company is still working to bring in more Cat machines and Allied equipment. “GP Rental will eventually be stocked with a couple hundred pieces on this job site,” he said. “Of course, machine availability is a big challenge right now. That is why you only see about 10 pieces. But we will have the ability to quickly turn around a machine because we have a technician on hand as well as a wash pit.” In addition, the GP Rental store will have a selection of safety gear for folks working on the job, he added. GP Rental Sales Manager Blake Rogers said, at the peak of construction, a job the size of Fujifilm Diosynth will require more than 2,000 pieces of equipment, “and we are looking to supply a portion of that. Being closer to the project and our customers [building here] gives us a better opportu-

Shawn D. Wilson, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), was joined by other state and local officials June 10 to celebrate the start of construction of an expansion of Louisiana Highway 44, including a roundabout project, in Ascension Parish. The $6.2 million project, which stretches from around Interstate 10 to La. 941, will widen La. 44 from two to four lanes and install the multilane roundabout at the crossroads of La. 44 and La. 941, the DOTD announced on its website. “This widening and roundabout project will greatly aid traffic flow by increasing capacity and reducing the potential for crashes at the La. 44 and La. 941 intersection,” Wilson told the gathering. “Ascension Parish is a rapidly growing area, and in order to accommodate this influx we must focus on the infrastructure throughout the region.” Also attending the groundbreaking was state Rep. Clay Schexnayder, speaker of the Louisiana House of Representatives, and a native of Ascension Parish. In his comments, he said, “We have just wrapped up a successful legislative session where we secured the funding to see that the infrastructure needs of our state are met. It is an honor to be present to celebrate the completion of this much-needed expansion. The densely populated roads and highways around Ascension Parish need better access and space for traffic to flow to ease the dayto-day life of the citizens of this area.” In this highly populated section of La. 44,
more than 15,000 motorists travel the road corridor daily, the DOTD reported in its June 10 press release. By 2040, the daily number of motorists on the highway is expected to increase to 24,059. Ascension Parish is located just to the south of Baton Rouge, the state’s capital city. “This is just another in the many improvements that are taking place in our area,” noted parish President Clint Cointment. “The cooperation between state, parish and local entities continues to provide better and safer roads for our residents. I would like to thank all involved in this project. Without your steadfast commitment, it would not have come about. The future is bright for Louisiana, especially Ascension Parish.” Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux told the audience, “The city of Gonzales greatly appreciates our partnership with the [DOTD] and Ascension Parish. Improving traffic flow in our community is one of our most important goals and Secretary Wilson and his staff have been great to work with. We are thankful to finally see this improvement happening. My administration will continue to work on improving important infrastructure to better serve our citizens.” Utility relocations are currently under way around the highway, the DOTD reported. The project’s builder, KCR Contractors, is estimating that construction will begin late this summer, with a completion during the late summer of 2023, if the weather allows.

Award Worthy...
ARTBA Hands High Honor to President Biden, Sen. Portman President Joe Biden and U.S. Senator Rob Portman (ROhio) are the 2022 recipients of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association’s (ARTBA) highest honor — the “ARTBA Award.” The award was given May 17 in Washington, D.C., during ARTBA’s 2022 Federal Issues Program and Transportation Construction Coalition’s (TCC) Fly-In. Established in 1960, the ARTBA Award recognizes outstanding contributions that have advanced the broad goals of the association. Recipients have included governors, more than 25 U.S. senators or representatives, two U.S. secretaries of transportation, and dozens of top leaders and executives from government and the transportation construction industry private sector. The president and senator are recognized for their leadership and willingness to work across the aisle to complete the landmark Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The November 2021 enacted law includes a five-year, $450 billion reauthorization of federal highway, public transit, and highway safety programs. It represents the largest increase in federal surface transportation investment in 65 years. For more information, visit www.artba.org.

Heavy Machines LLC Breaks Hitachi Partners With Hills Ground for New Facility in Tenn. Machinery to Market Its Heavy Machines LLC recently began breaking ground for a new location in Piperton, Tenn. The facility will sit on a 6-acre lot and will house both the corporate team and the staff and operations of its current Memphis branch. The company hosted a ground breaking ceremony on June 7, with employees and company leaders, customers and members of the community attending. The new facility is expected to be completed within a year. “We are very happy to begin the construction of our brand new location,” said Gus Wilson, CFO at Heavy Machines LLC. “Equipped with the latest technology and more space, this facility will allow us to serve our customers in the Memphis area even better. It was great to see such a great turnout at our ground breaking event. Everyone is excited and looking forward to construction and completion of the project.” The event featured local food, and a speech was given by Wilson. Several Liebherr and Link-Belt machines were displayed, including Link-Belt’s famous Diggin’ for a Cure Pink-Belt 145 X4 excavator. The Pink-Belt machine is a 15.2 metric ton hydraulic excavator that is painted pink to show support for breast cancer awareness. It was in route to an equipment show in Las Vegas and stopped by Heavy Machine’s event on the way.

Hills Machinery and Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas Inc. (HCMA) recently established a partnership to market the Hitachi excavator and wheel loader equipment lines. The alliance will allow Hills Machinery and HCMA to grow the lineup of world-renowned Hitachi equipment across the North Carolina and South Carolina regions, and enable HCMA to introduce the broader lineup of Hitachi-branded equipment to the Carolina marketplace. “Hitachi’s worldwide reputation as a premier manufacturer of construction equipment combined with the Hills Machinery approach to customer care and product expertise, service and established industry relationships, opens the door for significant growth for both of us,” said Jim Hill, president. “We see this as a great opportunity to strengthen our relationships with our customers and provide them with world-class construction machinery.” Backed by more than a half-century of engineering innovation and advanced manufacturing excellence, Hitachi construction equipment has a reputation worldwide for its engineering, reliability, smart technology integration and low operating costs. “Since we added our Hitachi-built compact and construction excavator line of equipment to the North American market to complement our wellestablished lineup of wheel loaders, we have been able to establish dealer partnerships with some of the leading equipment distributors in the industry. Hills Machinery is a perfect example of that,” said Al Quinn, CEO of HCMA. “We couldn’t be more proud to have Hills Machinery representing Hitachi equipment.” For more information, visit hitachicm.us.

NCDOT Equips State Roads With Flood-Warning System When the next hurricane strikes North Carolina, the state will be armed with an advanced flood-warning system that relies on a network of 400 river and stream gauges. In making the announcement May 23, the state’s Department of Transportation (NCDOT) said on its website that the new system will allow the agency for the first time to analyze, map and communicate in real-time any flood risks to roads, bridges and culverts. This critical information will be sent to NCDOT maintenance staff responding to flooded roads and washed-out culverts. In addition, the system’s reports will help local emergency management officials and the public accessing the department’s DriveNC.gov website for prompt weatherrelated closures. “This state-of-the-art warning system our department has created will help us be better prepared for the next major storm,” North Carolina Transportation Secretary Eric Boyette explained in the online news release. “Even though we’ve had some quiet hurricane seasons recently, we cannot let our guard down.” The last major storm to impact North Carolina’s road network was Hurricane Florence in 2018. In 2022, researchers at N.C. State University in Raleigh, and the National Hurricane Center are predicting an above-average hurricane season, which officially begins June 1. N.C. Equipped With Armada of Flood Gauges After Florence, the state Legislature gave NCDOT a $2 million grant to develop sophisticated software and install more flood gauges. The system, though, primarily taps into existing gauges operated by other agencies, such as the N.C. Emergency Management and the U.S. Geological Survey and includes an interactive online dashboard and flood mapping based on three-dimensional ground surveys. One part of the new early flood-warning system covers almost 3,000 mi. of state-maintained roads, mostly east of Interstate 95 where hurricanes tend to have the greatest impact. It also will allow NCDOT to monitor flood conditions for some 15,000 bridges and culverts statewide. The transportation department’s hydraulics unit has been fine-tuning the system and training staff on it with smaller storms over the past year. In its online statement, NCDOT noted that it has formed a recent partnership with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Renaissance Computing Institute, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Coastal Resilience Center of Excellence, to receive forecast modeling data on
how storm surge may affect the state’s road network in coastal areas. Maintenance Crews Ready Beyond the flood-warning system, NCDOT has been preparing for the hurricane season in other ways as well. For example, the agency has been reviewing procedures and conducting exercises internally and with partner agencies. Also, some highway divisions in the state’s coastal counties have held employee training events this spring to review response and recovery operations. Each of the agency’s 14 highway divisions have been taking inventory of supplies, doing maintenance on chainsaws and other equipment, and readying emergency on-call contracts that will supplement what NCDOT employees do in responding to a storm.
Public Preparations State transportation officials remind Tarheel residents now is the time to prepare supplies for the possibility of an extended power outage, restricted traveling, or the need to be at a shelter. North Carolina Emergency Management also maintains a comprehensive list of items to include in an emergency supply kit. After a hurricane of tropical storm has passed, people should remember to never drive through flooded waters on roads or around barricades. It only takes one foot of water to sweep a vehicle away, according to NCDOT. For more preparation tips, including evacuation routes and evacuation zones by coastal county, visit www.ReadyNC.org and watch the short video on how to prepare for severe tropical weather.

This stream gauge over the Neuse River on N.C. 42 in Johnston County is one of several the NCDOT will rely on to gather data for a new early food-warning system.

Michael C. Liptak, Founder of ALL, Passes Away at 91 The principal architect of the heavy lift equipment rental category and driving force behind The ALL Family of Companies has passed away. Michael C. Liptak was 91. Together with his wife, Marvine, and brothers, Lawrence and Jake, Mr. Liptak founded ALL Erection & Crane Rental in Cleveland, Ohio, with just a single crane in 1964. Through the decades, it grew into the largest privately held crane rental company in North America, boasting 33 branches across the continent, a fleet of more than 3,500 cranes and an employee roster totaling more than 1,500. At the time of ALL’s founding, most contractors had to purchase and maintain their own cranes. Mr. Liptak and his inner circle saw a customer need, bought their own crane, and began renting it. In the process, they created a new category — crane rental — and backed it with hard work, reliable products and outstanding customer service, according to the company. Mr. Liptak was a blue-collar guy from a blue-collar city, and he built his business through sweat, time and a handshake that was his bond. In the world Mr. Liptak and his brothers grew up in, nothing came easy, but he wanted to make life a little easier for the working people who relied on heavy lift equipment to do their jobs — because he was one of them. Up until his final days, Mr. Liptak was still involved in daily life at ALL, visiting branches and offering his advice and expertise. He was well known to weigh in on critical — or even seemingly mundane — business issues, because even if he had handed off the mantle of responsibility, he never stopped carrying the weight of his life work. He pushed those around him to be the best they could be. And he could be that type of leader because there wasn’t a thing he hadn’t done. “Before there was an ALL Crane, there was a man driving
dump trucks in a quarry,” said Mr. Liptak’s son, Michael L. Liptak, current CEO and president of the company. “He drove trucks, operated cranes, fixed cranes when they broke and saved enough to buy new ones when they were needed. From that foundation, he built everything we know here at ALL.” Known to many as “Big Mike,” he never stopped being excited about the basics of the business, perhaps best characterized by the kid-like way he felt compelled to go out and operate any new crane the company had acquired. You can’t keep an operator out of the seat, and Mr. Liptak was an operator at heart. Mr. Liptak was about balance, too. “Everything Dad did was for the thousands upon thousands for whom he provided jobs over the years,” added Michael L. Liptak. “That was never lost on me or the rest of the second- and now third-generation family working at ALL. We were all lucky to have the shade of his mighty shadow.” Liptak credited his father’s vision for helping to guide the company to its current success. Always about balance, he said his father knew that steady growth coupled with impeccable quality were the keys to longevity. His instincts proved correct, as the company he founded approaches its 60th year. Liptak also recalls a driven man who always had time for family. “Everyone here is treated like family — and many actual families make ALL their life’s work,” he said. “The family feeling extends to our customers and suppliers as well. That all started with Dad. He created a place where everyone was welcome, and the sky was the limit as far as advancement. He’s my inspiration, both as a leader and a person. To say he will be missed is a monumental understatement.” Michael C. Liptak was preceded in death by his brother, Jake, who died in 2021.

Fecon’s Bull Hog Mulcher Cuts Haul Costs for Land Clearing Ample sunshine, warm weather, and frequent rain fuels the year-round growth of vegetation in south Florida. Unfortunately for homeowners and construction companies, that also includes invasive species like melaleuca, Brazilian Pepper and Ear-Leafed Acacia. Many local ordinances preclude the start of construction until all invasives are cleared from the property. That has fueled the growth of D & S Land Management, a mulching contractor that specializes in invasive species removal based in Naples, Fla. Invasive species removal can be an arduous and difficult problem to deal with. Large shrubs and trees taking root and spreading out across a plot of land can take a team of people with machetes and chainsaws all day to cut down. One alternative to cutting down the invasive species is to uproot it. However, this is often easier said than done and requires a grapple or root rake to rip the root system from the ground. For some species, like the Brazilian Pepper, this works quite well. The Brazilian Pepper has a large amount of underbrush connected to one very small root system. Once this is uprooted, however, there is still a very large volume of brush to deal with. Simply hauling off all the tree limbs and brush can be cumbersome and expensive. Large limbs take up more space and thus need more trucks to haul them all off. Uprooted bushes take up the most space, and can really cut into profits, especially with rising costs of hauling and dumping. With all these challenges, invasive species removal can be difficult for a company to handle. However, Douglas Clarke and Scott Simmons of D & S Land Management have found their solution in the form of the Fecon Bull Hog mulcher with a depth control rotor. D & S Land Management has been operating a Kubota SVL95 with a Fecon BH74DCR mulcher attachment for two years. It has found this to be much more efficient than manually cutting down invasive species with machetes and chainsaws. According to the primary machine operator, Scott Simmons, “For a half-acre, it would take a group of four guys with
machetes and chainsaws about a day and a half to cut it all down. With the mulcher, I can do the same area in four to six hours, tops.” Clearing an area in less time, and with less labor, means a substantial cost savings and a safer work environment. This savings is increased even more when you factor in haul off costs. A team of men cutting down a half-acre worth of invasive species would still need to do something with the tree limbs and other detritus they cut down. Mulching to clear the area has the added effect of leaving behind a nice carpet of mulch. On existing residential lots, where homeowners are cleaning up or reclaiming their property, this is left as is, which eliminates haul off costs. For new construction, though, the wood chips are raked into piles and hauled off in much more compact piles, which allows for much cheaper haul off costs. “I’d say we’re cutting about half the cost on being able to mulch it down, so it actually compacts in the dumpsters better. We’re doing all of our small stuff that way, all of our quarter-acre, and half-acre lots. “I’m saving a lot of time and a lot of money on haul-off because it’s not making such a large pile and we’re able to fit more
stuff in fewer containers. We’ll mulch the entire thing and like I said, scrape up all the mulch and all the roots and it makes it way easier for haul-off,” said Simmons. This is especially important with rising costs of hauling and dumping. Invasive species can be very costly to haul off without mulching. “Brazilian pepper is very limiting on how much you can actually fit in a grapple truck. I’ve had quarter acre lots where you’ve got seven, eight, nine grapple trucks. You’re talking about almost $3,000 to $4,000 in haul off if you don’t mulch it down first. However, if I come in and I Fecon everything, I can usually have a quarter acre lot that normally would take eight grapple trucks hauled off in two,” said Clarke. The DCR rotor is particularly helpful to this process. The depth control rotor limits the bite that the mulcher can take. By reducing the size of the bite, it ensures finer mulching, leaving a much nicer carpet of mulch in its wake. This can lead to less cleanup time after mulching to make it look good. The smaller bite also limits the horsepower needed. The shape of the rotor was specially engineered with material flow in mind to ensure energy is efficiently used for production.
The BH74DCR has a 61-in. working width and includes 24 double-sided Viking knives, which are ideal for the fibrous materials encountered in south Florida’s never-ending growing season. Clarke estimates that D & S gets about 60 to 100 hours out of each side of the Viking knives. Bolt-on skid shoes made of AR400 steel mean there is less plowing of material and a more uniform end product. A push bar helps to topple standing trees. When all these aspects come together, it allows for much more production. Clarke and Simmons have been running their Fecon FM74DCR on a Kubota SVL95, which delivers up to 40 gpm hydraulic flow to the Bull Hog. They recently purchased an ASV RT-120 to run the Fecon. With 120 hp engine and 45 gpm of hydraulic flow at 4,060 psi, the added power is shredding invasives faster than ever, so that Simmons can get to the next project, he said. The company transports everything, including the loader, Bull Hog, a grapple, bucket and transfer tank, on a 25 plus 5 Diamond C trailer pulled by either an F350 flatbed dually single cab, or an F250. According to Clarke, “That Diamond C is the bee’s knees.” Simmons is the main operator of the equipment, and usually brushes the teeth of the Fecon BH74 DCR with a flap wheel every two to three hours to keep them sharp. The DCR is equipped with double sided Viking knives, and according to Clarke, they get about 200 hours of machining time out of a set of them. They enjoy a steady diet of invasive species, keeping them out of the dirt and sandy soil helps to prolong their service life as well. Eliminating the invasive species before construction starts is a great idea, as that is when the area is most open and available to mulchers or hand work crews. As the team at D & S Land Management have learned, the former is much faster, safer, more profitable, and overall, more efficient than the latter. And with plenty of construction and invasive species in south Florida efficiency is the name of the game. For more information, visit www.Fecon.com.

OTR Wheel Engineering Unveils ‘Tire That Never Goes Flat’
Sold as an assembly (tire plus wheel), the NDX system is available for more than 50 turf equipment products and 10 utility vehicle fitments supporting popular OEM models. OTR also is introducing NDX-style smooth type front tires with turf-friendly patterns.
OTR Wheel Engineering Inc. has launched the NDX airless tire and wheel system for turf equipment and utility vehicles. Developed to solve the recurring problem of flat tires for vehicles operating on rough terrain, NDX minimizes loss of productivity and revenue for fleets and owner-operators, while increasing ride quality, according to the company. NDX combines multi-layered construction, engineered structural supports and a tread belt that maintains desired curvature and safe ground clearance at all times. Heavy-duty construction offers enhanced operating life, lasting up to twice as long as other airless tire options, without sacrificing load capacity. Additionally, NDX uses premium rubber compounds and a deflection management system that optimizes energy absorption and load distribution, resulting in a ride equal to or better than pneumatic tires. Other benefits of this system include less jarring and bouncing as well as reduced operator fatigue. Fuel consumption also is reduced — up to 10-percent when compared with similar tire options — making the NDX system more environmentally friendly. Sold as an assembly (tire plus wheel), the NDX system is available for more than 50 turf equipment products and 10 utility vehicle fitments supporting popular OEM models. OTR also is introducing NDX-style smooth type front tires with turf-friendly patterns. “The NDX tire is a game-changing solution to the longstanding problem of flat tires,” said Fred Taylor, founder and chairman of the OTR Board. “Our history of tire and wheel innovations, advanced con-
struction and relationships with end users have been fully leveraged in this product development. The result is a system that looks and behaves like a pneumatic tire, except it never goes flat, thus eliminating costly downtime and repairs. NDX is tough and durable, as well as competitively priced, to deliver exceptional value and a safe, comfortable ride.” OTR Wheel Engineering Inc. specializes in off-road mobility solutions for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and the aftermarket. ILJA Provides States With Funds for EV Charging Stations CHARGING from page 1
That would mean charging stations with a mile of major highways, easily located online or through an app. The stations would be configured with enough outlets to avoid long waits to charge. User fees would be similar across the system. Setting the Stage According to the department of transportation, the proposed rule would establish the groundwork for states to build federallyfunded charging station projects across a national EV charging network. The standards also establish workforce requirements for installation, maintenance and operations to increase the safety and reliability of charging station function and use and create and support good-paying, highlyskilled jobs across the country. Earlier this year, the Biden administration earmarked approximately $5 billion for states over the next five years to build out a national EV charging network. “To support the transition to electric vehicles, we must build a national charging network that makes finding a charge as easy as filling up at a gas station,” said Buttigieg. “These new ground rules will help create a network of EV chargers across the country that are convenient, affordable, reliable and accessible for all Americans.” The IIJA provides states with the funding and framework to build out a reliable charging network, said Stephanie Pollack, deputy federal highway administrator. “This is a foundational step that will provide EV drivers with predictable access to reliable electric vehicle charging access across the United States.” States will develop their EV deployment plans in concert with the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, established by the infrastructure act. The agency is providing direct technical assistance and support to states with the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program. “We’re making sure that charging stations are easily and equally accessible, allowing every American to get coast to coast in an electric vehicle,” said Jennifer M. Granholm, secretary of energy. “The investments will not only build an interconnected national charging network, but also boost local economies and strengthen our independence from fossil fuels.” Big Picture FHWA released other resources to help states complete deployment plans and access funding to build out the charging network. These include new program questions and answers and a new tool to help evaluate the best locations for charging stations when it
The proposed rule would establish guidelines for states to begin building EV charging stations.
may not be possible to install at the required 50-mile intervals. Charging stations would contain a minimum number and type of chargers capable of supporting drivers’ fast charging needs. Additionally, rules would require consistency regarding the installation, operation and maintenance of projects to provide the traveling public with reliable charging expectations. The proposed rule would further specify the required minimum density of provided chargers, payment methods and requirements for customer support services. Proposed rules also will set strong certification standards for the workers installing, operating and maintaining electric vehicle chargers, said DOT, ensuring funds support good-paying, high-quality jobs and chargers are installed by a highly-skilled, professional workforce. The proposed rule also will support workforce development and on-the-job training, “building the clean-energy workforce of the future.” Other proposed requirements would help create a seamless national network of EV charging infrastructure that could communicate and operate on the same software platforms from one state to another. They would address traffic control devices and on-premise signage; data submittal requirements to help create a public EV charging database; and network connectivity requirements to allow for secure remote monitoring, diagnostics, control. Additionally, the FHWA proposes standardized communication of charging price and availability to help consumers make informed decisions about trip planning and when and where to charge their EVs.
Building the Grid Ken Thomson of Facility Builders believes building EV charging stations enables the contractor to facilitate a host of people transferring their vehicular power away from fossil fuels and toward electricity. “As accessibility to recharging stations continues to grow, the momentum is apt to snowball.” The construction is relatively straightforward, he said. Most of the interfaces are prepackaged units available from several suppliers. The contractor’s job is to set up the interface, ensure that all standards and safety regulations are met and work out parking and accessibility options with the station owner. “Comparatively, natural gas filling stations are more complicated to construct, primarily due to accommodating the tank, controlling moisture content and the greater number of interfacing options to choose among.” Of course, details have to be worked out and choices made in the process of building. Whether the installation is public or private, residential or commercial, the number of parking spaces with access to charging interfaces must all be determined. One also has to calculate charging capacity, determine means of access and set the charging standard, he said. A private station is appropriate for commercial vehicle fleets and also for individually assigned use at residences or places of employment. Public accessibility implies the need for an interface equipped with a universal form of billing. Public stations also need to provide more than one charging level option.
“Often when a new technology is introduced into an existing environment, some amount of alteration is necessary,” said Thomson. In the case of bringing EV charge capability to a building, one may be laying extra conduit, adjusting electrical loads and changing parking assignments. For multiple users, such as in a condominium or office building, additional measures might mean individualizing power usage records. “Construction contracts in such cases need to spell out the terms of tenant improvements, especially if uninterrupted continual use of the space during construction is required.” Other issues EV charging station owners should discuss with their general contractor include off-grid solutions, which can be installed under certain circumstances. Examples are solar panels mounted on carports, rooftops or stand-alone structures. “In some cases, unused power can be sold back to the utility,” said Thomson. “Another option is to connect to a special EV network grid, the power for which is 100 percent from renewable energy sources.” For on-grid applications, it may be possible to implement a “smart grid” arrangement whereby charging is reduced at peak load hours or initiated at low-cost times. It’s crucial for all types of businesses to think about how they can become part of the new fueling network, believes ChargePoint, an EV infrastructure company. Rich Quattrini, vice president of customer solutions, said fuel retailers face a particularly urgent need to modernize operations to remain relevant and expand revenue generation opportunities. “Organizations need to carefully choose and design their fuel retailing sites, especially when it comes to DC fast-charging,” said Quattrini. Before even getting started with site design, though, a contractor will want to fully understand what to plan for. Here are Quattrini’s seven suggested considerations: 1. How much electrical supply will be needed? Based on location and the volume of EV charging expected, the charging partner and utility can help estimate and request the type of electrical service and amount of power from the utility. 2. Construction Begins With Demolition, Excavation Activities
Baptist Health Care photo
Labor and supply chain issues have been the biggest challenges to date, but those issues appear to have been resolved.

Construction crews in Pensacola are working to complete a $636 million project that represents the single largest investment in health care facilities, services and programs in northwest Florida’s history. The new Baptist Health Care campus includes a 10-story, 602,000sq.-ft. acute care hospital; a 6-story, 178,000-sq.-ft. Bear Family Foundation Health Center; a freestanding behavioral health unit; and a second, 80,000-sq.-ft. medical office building. “Our goal is to make it seamless for those we serve to get what they need,” said Mark Faulkner, president and CEO, Baptist Health Care. “We are committed to providing the very best care for our patients and team members, and our new facility will allow us to do exactly that. Better access, new and improved capabilities and updated technology are just the start.” In fall 2020, a ceremony celebrating the project’s official
guests joined Brasfield & Gorrie officials and nearly 1,000 construction crew members on site for a topping out ceremony that marked completion of the framework of the building. “The program recognized the significance of the day and celebrated the skill, hard work and contributions made by the construction team. Following the program, guests watched as the last steel beam was lifted by crane to the top of the new acute care hospital and set into place. The beam was signed by team members, volunteers, visitors, construction workers and others.” One of the highlights of the project, according to Faulkner, will be the town square and healing gardens. “The distinguishing feature of the new campus will be the many existing heritage oaks and magnolia trees, some of which are hundreds of years old. In recognition of this wonderful asset, these beautiful trees are at the heart of the development, in a central active town square where patients, visi-

launch took place exactly 71 years after the groundbreaking of the current hospital, although site preparation began prior to the event. “On October 30, 1949, our founders broke ground to build Baptist Hospital with the purpose of bringing more modern health care to our community. This new campus is their legacy. It will allow us to forge ahead with renewed commitment and passion to care for the community for many years into the future, with the goal of improving the quality of life for all people, regardless of age and the stage of life they face.” Faulkner said the location of the new facility is ideal for those seeking treatment. “The proximity to I-110 provides easier, faster and more direct access to care for people from all across northwest Florida and south Alabama than our current location, which is surrounded by residential property. Yet we are still less than three miles from our original location, and the community that means so much to us.” In February 2022, Baptist Health Care leaders and special

S.C. Compost Company Makes Organic Waste Earth-Friendly By Eric Olson CEG CONTRIBUTING EDITOR
Not long after graduating from college, Riley Alber found work as a land surveyor, where he spent his days hiking through woods and wetlands just as he had as a youngster in southern New Jersey. Although he loved being outdoors, he soon realized that his job was a contradiction to his belief in preserving the health and sustainability of Earth’s natural environment. “It was tearing me apart to cut some of the last forests that exist here in the Southeast,” Alber said. “Through that, I made a life change to small-scale organic farming and really dove into the agricultural industry full throttle. That experience shifted my focus toward soil biology and local waste streams due to my college background.” He had earlier prepared himself for a career path working in environmental sustainability by attending the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. There, Alber majored in Environmental Sciences — a curriculum that included natu-

ral resource management and conservation — and minoring in Geospatial Information Systems (GIS). It was that bit of clarity as a surveyor and an intense desire to take action to close a loop in the circle of sustainability, that led Alber to form Wilmington Compost Co. in July 2018. Then and now, the business is operated on Piney Run Farms, his family-owned 75-acre piece of property north of Wilmington that had previously been the site of the Pender County vegetative landfill. The size of the land also allows him to grow food for his family’s use. Now, though, Alber describes Piney Run Farms as a primarily materials and recycling yard. “Luckily, through starting the compost hauling, we were
able to grow, and within two years, I was able to go into business with my brother, Trey, and bring on some additional family members,” he said, adding that his father, mother and sister also play active roles within the company.” His dad, Richard, operates machinery on the farm, and Riley’s mother, Mary, works in the office as its secretary. In addition, his sister, Haley, whose full-time job is as a nurse, comes by the farm from time to time, he said, to lend a hand in whatever work needs doing, including collecting food waste. “Now, we all act as a team and Trey runs the farm and manages that operation. It has just been a blessing how we have all been able to come together to run this business.” see ALBER page 44
Wilmington Compost is just in its second year working at the Piney Run Farms site, but Riley Alber is proud to note that the business is almost doubling the volume that it did in 2021.

Alber Finds Right Tools With Sound Heavy Machinery ALBER from page 41
Operation Works to Give Organic Waste Second Life Wilmington Compost remediated and processed all the natural materials that were already at the landfill and currently refines biofuel materials and wood-waste products to reduce fossil fuel and coal consumption. “We provide a curbside food waste collection and hauling service in which we also distribute compostable packaging products to the local food and beverage industry here in Wilmington,” Alber said. “To bring that home, we run a compost facility and processing site where we do all our organic waste recycling efforts and soil manufacturing. On the tail end, we then distribute the soil to create healthier soils here in our community.” After the Alber family processes what it hauls in, it takes those now-clean, refined materials, such as mulches, screened topsoil, screened fill dirt, soil conditioner and surge rock and sells them to landscapers and contractors. The entire operation stems from Alber’s passion for soil biology, the local food network and recycling natural resources.
Anaconda Trommel Screener Key to Alber’s Operation Using front-end wheel loaders, Wilmington Compost blends the compostable materials with community feedstock — the latter of which is a biomass that is converted into a compost — and puts the mixture into the company’s soil products through an extensive management process to make certain it meets all state environmental requirements. “We do a layering pattern with some of the community feedstocks that we collect, in addition to some of our proprietary ingredients,” he said. “The organic waste comes from vegetative land-clearing debris as well as local food waste and mushroom substrates. We turn all the piles, aerate the materials to keep them moist and compost and degrade those down into a finished product.” Besides the front-end loaders and an excavator, another of Alber’s important pieces of equipment is an Anaconda T516 trommel screen he has been renting from Sound Heavy Machinery Inc. in Wilmington. “We chose that machine because we needed to screen out a lot of our larger particle pieces so we could come out with a fine, finished product for our consumers,” he said, “and it

has done a great job in doing that in a timely fashion and when needed. With that machine’s size and throughput capability, we thought it was a good match for the size of our operation out here.” Acquiring the Anaconda trommel screen from Sound Heavy Machinery also was made easier for Alber, he said, due to his working relationship with Mark Wyatt in the dealership’s equipment sales and rental department. “Although we have primarily worked with Mark [Wyatt] on getting a screener, he has been a great help,” Alber said. “At times, when we have evaluated other equipment opportunities, he has been right there to answer our questions. With the screeners, he provided insight and support for us, including whether we were going to go with the 16-foot or 20-foot Anaconda trommel screens, or just learning more about the Anaconda product itself.” Growing Company One of N.C.’s Leading Composters Wilmington Compost is just in its second year working at the Piney Run Farms site, but Alber is proud to note that the business is almost doubling the volume that it did in 2021. In addition to partnering with over four dozen local restaurants, coffee shops, schools, businesses and food banks, Wilmington Compost is an active member and partner with the Coastal Composting Council (CCC), an education and advocacy group supporting diversion of organic residues to produce compost in the state. The group is an offshoot of the North Carolina Compost Council, which itself is part of the national organization. “One of the things that we pride ourselves on is being a leader in the compost industry here in Wilmington,” Alber said. “We take pride in the active biology in our soils, and the cleanliness and quality of those soils. We are here to work with homeowners and contractors of all sizes to distribute healthy soils.” For more information, visit www.wilmingtoncompostcompany.com and www.soundheavymachinery.com. tors and our team members can enjoy the healing qualities of nature, stroll along a walking path incorporated among the trees, rest or participate in an outdoor wellness class. We understand how important quiet spaces to reflect and rejuvenate can be to healing. Several areas have been reserved and designed specifically for this purpose.” For Lee Thompson, project director of Birminghambased contractor Brasfield & Gorrie, labor and supply chain issues have been the biggest challenges to date, but those issues appear to have been resolved. “We have more than 800 workers on site now and expect to peak at 1,000 this summer,” Thompson said. “We’ve faced some material availability challenges, but we’ve been able to overcome them thus far by working with our trade contractors, clients and design teams to develop innovative solutions.” The site included 36 parcels, with numerous structures that needed to be demolished before new work could begin. Although Baptist Health Care contracted demolition outside of the contractor’s scope, Brasfield & Gorrie spent the better part of six months helping manage the logistics of removal and other enabling projects to prepare the building pad for construction. Thompson said the site development plans capitalized on the property’s approximately 57 acres and include around 1,200 surface parking spaces. The underground storm, sewer, power and water designs were complex, and required close coordination during construction. Aside from typical excavation work for underground utilities, the site required many “deep excavation” activities. “The installation of the underground retention system, the various stormwater chambers, the sewer system and the onsite sewer lift station all required excavations of +/- 30-inch deep to accommodate the final structures,” Thompson noted. “Shoring and trenching were a must to perform these activities safely.” The property contains an underground stormwater retention system, which can hold up to one million gallons of water at peak capacity. “In addition to the underground storage, there are seven stormwater ponds across the site to help manage the storms Pensacola often faces between May and November each
year,” said Thompson. As with any construction project, crews have kept an eye on the forecast, but, so far, Mother Nature hasn’t forced any delays. “Weather can be a risk, but even Hurricane Sally hasn’t slowed down construction on this project. We remain on schedule for completion in fall 2023.” Key tasks remaining include completion of exterior skin components, including exterior glass, metal panels and some roofing. Workers also must finish the interior buildout and finishes of the first floor, including the emergency department, imaging rooms, kitchen/dining and administrative areas. Interior buildout and finishes of the second floor, including operating rooms, procedure rooms, sterile processing and lab remain, as well as interior buildout and finishes of the third floor and patient tower, including ICU rooms, pharmacy, labor and delivery suites and medical surgery

patient rooms. Landscaping and hardscaping in the meditation garden must be addressed, along with the lightwells, which provide daylight to the interior hospital spaces. A variety of heavy machinery is being used on the project, including John Deere 120C, John Deere 250G, Komatsu PC290, Sany SY75C, Cat 336F, Cat 305E, Cat 306 and Cat 303.5E excavators; Cat D6N, D3K2 and D3 dozers; John Deere 644K and Cat IT38G wheel loaders; Mustang Manitou 1650RT, Cat 259B and Cat 259D3 skid steers; Cat 730 hauling trucks; Cat 120M2 graders; Cat CS54B and 65ZV rollers; Broce Broom street sweepers; Toro MBTX 2500 concrete/mud buggies; Genie SX-135 XC, Genie S-85 XS, JLG Ultra Boom and SkyJack SJ66T man lifts; Terex SK415-20, SK575-32 and SK415 tower cranes; mobile and crawler cranes; and Cat TL1055D, Genie GTH-844, Genie GTH-1056 and JCB C510 lulls/forklifts. Thompson said building a health care facility is a methodical process, because of the systems necessary to support the facility’s critical functions. “In addition to planning for these systems, this project includes a central energy plant to serve the hospital’s ongoing needs. The plant houses the generators and other equipment that will keep the hospital running smoothly. Coordinating the envelope and MEP systems for sustainability in weather and energy is a team effort. “We also take planning and implementing life safety and code compliance seriously, with review throughout a project’s design, pricing, start-up and construction phases.” Coordinating medical equipment is another essential part of health care construction. “The precise equipment a hospital uses requires corresponding precision in construction, including accurate utility services, appropriate structural support, comprehensive planning for equipment routing and rigging and dust-free environments.” Thompson added that working on a project that will serve so many for years to come is a tremendous honor. “We’re passionate about building strong communities, and it’s easy to see how a hospital campus contributes to its surroundings. This project also is providing a significant number of jobs for Pensacola-area residents. This project’s impact on the community gets us excited to come to work every day.” CEG

The new Baptist Health Care campus includes a 10-story, 602,000-sq.-ft. acute care hospital; a 6-story, 178,000-sq.-ft. Bear Family Foundation Health Center; a freestanding behavioral health unit; and a second, 80,000-sq.-ft. medical office building.
In fall 2020, a ceremony celebrating the project’s official launch took place exactly 71 years after the groundbreaking of the current hospital, although site preparation began prior to the event.

Kenworth Makes 15-Inch Digital Display System Standard Kenworth offers the 15-in. digital display system as standard equipment on Kenworth T880 and W990 models. The fully digital, high-definition digital display is already standard on the Kenworth T680 Next Generation. Kenworth’s digital display provides a significant level of customization and dynamic information content. The design is highly intuitive and easily adjustable to enable drivers to match their preferences, while also automatically displaying critical content. The digital display resulted from countless hours of driver observation, user testing, iterative prototyping and meticulous design work to create this advanced user experience. The digital display allows seamless viewing selection between two minimized views, basic view, maximized view and a driver customizable favorites view. Drivers can easily scroll up and down using the standard Kenworth Next Gen SmartWheel, which also puts cruise control and radio functions at the driver’s fingertips. The minimized views show truck speed, tachometer and standard content in the header and footer area for drivers that prefer fewer gauges. The basic view onscreen content adds gauges, such as fuel, air, coolant and oil pressure. A simple scroll of the Kenworth Next Gen SmartWheel to the maximized view will show additional gauges specified on the

truck — such as axle temperatures, torque, air filter, and brake application — for drivers that prefer to view all featured truck information. For vocational customers utilizing vehicle-mounted equipment — such as pumps, dump trucks, and cement mixers — there is a specific screen and tachometer mode available for power take-off (PTO) engagement and operations. There are new set points controllable through either dash switches or the steering wheel. Once the PTO is engaged, the digital display provides a readout of the operational PTO rpm. Preset PTO rpm speeds can be programmed into the digital display

— at the time of order — for customers with vehicle-mounted equipment requiring multiple speeds to function. Body builder tell-tale availability and associated sounds can be programmed into the digital display, enabling the driver to engage and disengage their installed equipment on the job site. “We met with drivers from vocational and over-the-road applications as a key part of our design process. As a result, we put in place the vocational-specific enhancements to benefit our vocational customers. The digital display will serve as a valuable tool for T880 and W990 operators alike,” said Laura Bloch, Kenworth assistant
general manager of sales and marketing. In any viewing of these various digital display viewing modes, the driver will automatically be alerted on the screen regarding any warnings or faults, if they were to occur. The digital display also enhances truck functionality when the truck is parked. Pressing the exterior light self-test switch runs a full system check for a quick analysis and status summary of multiple systems. The digital display screen offers a trip summary view when the driver shuts off the truck for the day. If so equipped, the system also can provide a driver performance assessment report and coaching
advice. A drive summary, which reports statistics on information such as average fuel economy, idle time, cruise control usage, as well as any potential mechanical issues, also appears at day’s end. The display system’s flexibility supports nearly 50 different layout possibilities across a wide range of possible gauge sensors. There are more than 4,500 possible gauge view combinations, including those that a driver could construct into a “favorites” view. The digital display is unique since drivers can customize their display to show specific information they find useful. For more information, visit www.kenworth.com.

Ringkob Advises On How to Identify, Overcome, Fix Business Bottlenecks Jeani Ringkob founded StoryBuilt Growth Strategy & Marketing after nearly a decade in the asphalt paving business and has helped several businesses grow and develop in the construction world. In her talk at World of Asphalt 2022, “Overcoming the Bottleneck in Your Business: How to Identify It Fast and Fix It Right, Every Time,” she explained that businesses are a lot like airplanes. Ringkob explained in Nashville that both businesses and airplanes require constant attention, regular maintenance, periodic enhancement and dutiful repairs to keep themselves up in the air. Identifying bottlenecks in a business is just as important as identifying faults on an airplane: Failing to do so could result in a crash. Ringkob broke the anti-bottleneck process down to three stages: 1. Identify 2. Investigate 3. Implement When it comes to identifying bottle-
BROOKS SALES, INC.
necks, she said a lot of it comes down to examining decision making. Are the business’s leaders making the right decision at the right time? If not, she explains that can lead to wasted resources, missed opportunities, mediocre employees, costly mistakes…bottlenecks. The reason inefficient decision making can lead to bottlenecks is that it can take leadership’s focus off growth, confident decision making, investment, new products, and more, and instead force leaders to focus on survival. Successful businesses focus on growth, stalled companies focus on keeping the lights on tomorrow. Once the problem is identified, Ringkob said the next step is to investigate what has been found. Was alignment found between company, product and customer? What was found about the company’s strengths and weaknesses, and those of the competition? What does the company’s pre-purchase, purchase, and post-purchase
strategy look like? What can be done to improve what has been found? Whatever the investigation has found to be a potential solution to the identified bottleneck, that solution is going to need to be implemented strategically. Ringkob recommends the “O.M.E.N.” test. • Objective: Set the result the business intends to achieve. • Measurement: How will progress be measured? • Evaluation: The frequency at which measurement will be reviewed. • Nurture: How the business will tweak things as new data comes in. Ringkob will present on “Recruiting and Retaining Top Talent at Every Level” and “Strategic Decision Making for Increased Margins” at ConExpo-Con/AGG, running March 14-18, 2023, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. ConExpoCon/AGG offers entire education tracks to help businesses “Attract, Engage & Retain Talent” and “Business Best Practices.”

Construction Equipment Guide Promotes Patrick Kiel to Key Accounts Manager
Patrick Kiel
Ted McKeon, president and publisher of Construction Equipment Guide (CEG) has announced the promotion of Patrick Kiel to the position of key accounts manager. Kiel has been an account representative of CEG for 16 years. “Since 2006 when Patrick joined Construction Equipment Guide, he has shown extraordinary skills in working with and developing marketing programs with our customers in the midwestern and northwestern regions of the United States,” said McKeon. “Under Patrick’s guidance, Construction Equipment Guide has experienced tremendous growth in both print and web-based advertising sales. Patrick also has developed the ability to gather pertinent industry knowledge and trends and uses that information to help his clients achieve their marketing goals.” In his new position as key accounts manager, Kiel will be working with other CEG account representatives across the country meeting with key accounts who tend to market on a national scope using CEG’s complete package of print and web-based offerings. “Particularly over the past decade, the variety of tools that Construction Equipment Guide has to offer its customers has broadened significantly,” said Kiel. “Print is still very much a key part of our product offering. Webbased products such as banner advertising, email marketing and social media marketing have been a growing segment of our platform for some time. “Advertising on the Google ad network is our newest product offering, which opens up a new world of opportunities for our customers,” he said. “I am looking forward to the opportunities that this new position presents to give an even greater level of customer support and service to Construction Equipment Guide customers.” CEG

eanco Auction held its May sale at its Philadelphia, Miss., headquarters facility on May 25. A huge amount of lots were sold from two rings, and the torrential downpours couldn’t keep the crowds away. Next up on the Deanco schedule is a two-day construction equipment and truck sale on July 20 and 21. CEG (All photographs in this article are Copyright 2022 Construction Equipment Guide. Buyers Show Despite Heat for JM Wood’s Three-Day Sale
B
lazing hot June temperatures didn’t keep the crowds away from the JM Wood Auction three-day sale at the company’s Montgomery, Ala., headquarters facility on June 14, 15 and 16. Gross sales were more than $87,000,000, making it the largest second quarter June auction in the company’s 49 years. More than 3,000 machines and trucks sold over the three days; over 60 percent of the bids received were online. Featured sellers included Alabama Power; Georgia Power; Southern Nuclear; Brasfield and Gorrie; Dunn; Evans Landscaping; Flint Equipment; Gulf Services; HO Weaver and Sons; and Strack Inc. Evans Landscaping sold 156 machines and trucks that were located offsite at its facility in Cincinnati, Ohio; Southern Nuclear sold 524 items that were located in Waynesboro, Ga., at Plant Vogtle. “We’ve had tremendous success with these ‘bolt on offsite one-owner auctions’ by blending them into our scheduled quarterly auction events,” said Bryant Wood. “When trucking cost do not make sense on some these larger one owner packages, we can send our team in to inventory, inspect, photo and video everything and sell it where it sits. The sellers love being able to take advantage of our strong online bidding platform during these mega Montgomery auction events.” JM Woods’ next auction will take place Sept. 20 to 22 in Montgomery, Ala. CEG
Researching several Cat compact track loaders for bidding consideration are Jeff Sampson (L) and Chris Deason of Riggs CAT, Little Rock, Ark. Opening up a Cat D6N dozer of interest are Junior Self (L) and Jack Self of Quality Earthmovers, Equality, Ala.

Test operating a Cat 305E mini-excavator are C.B. Smith (L) and Ken Meeks (in cab) of M&M Portolets, Thomasville, Ala. Onsite each day and taking care of their customers’ needs are Todd Johnson (L) of Palomar Insurance Corp. and Joe Burleson of Equify Financial.
Watching the ramp action for some of the big iron (L-R) are Bill Woods, Woods Equipment, Nashville, Tenn.; David Moore, Construction Equipment Sales & Rentals, Jackson, Tenn.; and George Massey, JM Wood Auction.
Looking over several excavators of interest are Harris Echols (L) and Thomas Echols of Underground Excavating, Patterson, Ga.
Jeffrey, Emily and young Wheeler Stead enjoy their time at the quarterly auctions. Jeffrey is the JM Wood online inventory manager.

Iron Auction Group Plans to Sell Carbon Alloy Plant
The plant was designed to produce a carbon alloy product used to produce steel, a coke substitute offering both lower production costs and a more environmentally friendly coke type product.
Iron Auction Group is bringing a new/never fired plant to absolute auction on July 14, 2022, at 10 a.m., offering both online and live bidding. The plant, which is owned by Jackson County Development Authority (formerly leased to Carbonyx International USA), was
designed to produce a carbon alloy product used to produce steel, a coke substitute offering both lower production costs and a more environmentally friendly coke type product. Due to unforeseen circumstances, after complete construction this plant was never
put into production. Due to the complex construction of this plant, the components can have a variety of operating duties that can be used across multiple industries. The equipment that makes up this plant are as follows — coal dryer, belt conveyors, hoppers, filter packs, dust collector, blowers,
screw conveyor, raw material tower, cooling system, bag housing and pulsing system. Questions regarding this plant are to be directed to Jared McGaffee at 276/202-6800 or by email jared@ironauctiongroup.com. For more information, visit www.ironauctiongroup.com.

New Facility for Rental, Service Keeps Project Running
Some of the Caterpillar equipment available to rent at the project site. RENTAL from page 12
Gregory Poole Equipment decided to rebrand its former Cat rental division to GP Rental at the beginning of 2022, Jackson said, with the idea of making it a standalone division from the larger company’s sales department and better compete with some of its more dedicated rental competitors. “And with that, we are looking to have a bigger fleet and a broader range of equipment readily available, like aerial equipment” he said. “Before, we were more of a Cat supplier on the rental side; now we want to be more of an all-encompassing rental store.” Poole said that the idea was to differentiate GP Rental from the Gregory Poole name, while still paying homage to the original and dynamic company. “I think GP Rental has done very well so far, and we have some brand awareness. Nine out of 10 customers know that
Matt Warring (L) of Southern Industrial receives the Yeti Cooler door prize from Greg Poole IV.
the ‘GP’ stands for Gregory Poole, and ‘Rental’ means we are solely focused on that part of the equipment business.” He admitted that he knew his brainchild “was kind of a far-fetched idea to begin with, but we had gotten some fresh blood in our rental team and were able to get some momentum going.” Once Poole learned that the proposed Fujifilm Diosynth plant was to be the largest development ever in North Carolina when it was announced, he and his team began trying to discover who owned land around the facility’s industrial park. In a bit of good luck, Poole found that the owners of the surrounding properties “were good friends of ours who are involved with Caterpillar, so we sat down with them about a year to 18 months ago to discuss putting a temporary rental location” by the entrance to the construction site on Green Oaks Parkway. “Here we are more than a year later, and we have about 30 pieces on rent,” he said in late May. “The Fujifilm Diosynth project is still in its very early states — about 10 percent complete — so our activity in this yard will ramp up considerably in the next few months as [building increases].” He believes that GP Rental will offer a rich variety of different machines as the construction gets busier. “Obviously when people think of a Cat dealership they think of earthmoving equipment, but whether GP Rental has a location here or not, we are always going to be the first ones on site moving dirt,” Poole said. “But what we are trying to capture more on this site than what we have been able to do in the past is the [rental market] for non-Cat equipment — the scissor lifts, boom lifts, telehandlers and trench rollers — the pieces you typically see utilized on the job site once the project starts to go vertical.” GP Rental Riding Triangle’s Expansion Wave During the dedication of the GP Rental facility in Holly Springs, Poole summed up the intention of his unique idea to a group of guests by saying, “the reason we are here is
GP Rental served a hearty lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, peach and cherry cobbler and more at its location in Holly Springs, N.C.
because we are a family-owned and operated business and have been in the Triangle for over 70 years now.” He noted that while the Triangle region of North Carolina has grown significantly since his family’s business started in 1951, the area has only been the scene of “unprecedented growth” just in the past few years. All that expansion, Poole said, “coupled with supply chain shortages, labor shortages and all the environmental challenges from a business perspective that we deal with every day makes it difficult sometimes to build in the Raleigh area. But we are out here to be good stewards of the community, and we want to facilitate growth here.” For more information, call 919/325-0183 or visit www.gregorypoole.com/rental/.
