Bechtel on Nov. 28 announced it was selected by Intel to build the company’s new semiconductor manufacturing facilities in New Albany, Licking County, Ohio. The fabrication facilities will further revitalize chipmaking in the United States and help restore dependability and resilience to the global semiconductor supply chain. Bringing this capability to Ohio is a historic

win for the region and for America, Bechtel said.

Intel’s investment will strengthen future economic development in the region and transform it into the “Silicon Heartland” as an entire supply chain is developed to deliver these facilities, including engineers, construction leadership and craft professionals. Bechtel will partner with the North

America's building trades unions and suppliers to create new construction jobs, and work with local education organizations to implement training programs.

“Bechtel is proud to work with Intel and the people of Ohio to reclaim U.S. semiconductor manufacturing,” said Catherine Hunt Ryan, president of Bechtel’s manufacturing and technology business. “A project of this

complexity and magnitude — with an outsized impact on the community and economy — is the type of work Bechtel is uniquely positioned to deliver. We are honored to be chosen by Intel as its partner and we are ready to build its most advanced semiconductor facilities in the world.”

Officials Announce Expo 2050 Master Plan Framework

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine joined members of the Ohio Expositions Commission to review the master plan framework that will serve as a launching point to modernize and enhance the Ohio Expo Center and Ohio State Fair for the future.

The framework was created as part of the work of the Expo 2050 Task Force. DeWine created the task force in 2019 to develop a strategic vision for the 360acre Ohio Expo Center property, which is home to the Ohio State Fair and hosts many other events throughout the year.

“The renderings represent the initial vision for the future of the Ohio Expo Center and Ohio State Fair, which will remain here in the heart of Columbus, its home since 1886,” said DeWine. “The Ohio State Fair is something to be proud of, and we want to make the guest experience one that is comparable to — if not better than — other best-in-class attractions.”

The strategic vision, which was developed by the Expo 2050 Task Force’s third-party master planning consultant Wellogy, includes a new overall organization of the Ohio Expo Center property, including the renovation, modernization or demolition of several buildings; the addition of new exhibition facilities, parking garages and other areas to enhance

the guest experience; and improved access between the Ohio Expo Center and the nearby Ohio History Connection. The recommendations also include the development of a new town square and entertainment pavilion.

“The Ohio Expo Center and Ohio State Fair mean so much to our city, our state and the agricultural community,” said Ohio Expo Center & State Fair General Manager Virgil Strickler. “Building on our facility’s unique history here in Columbus with

improvements that will accommodate all Ohioans will lead us, our event holders and everyone who knows and loves the Ohio State Fair, toward a bright future.”

The improvements will benefit the Ohio State Fair as well as many events held at the site throughout the year, such as the All-American Quarter Horse Congress, Goodguys Car Show, Ohio Beef Expo, trade shows, consumer shows and more.

The proposed enhancements are recommended to occur strategically over a period of several years

and do not yet have a specific timeline or estimated cost. The master plan framework will be used by the Ohio Expositions Commission as a guide for future development over the long-term as funding can be secured.

Wellogy was assisted by partners Populous, CSL International, EDGE Landscape Architecture, Korda Engineering, Bennett Engineering and Concord Addis. Steps that went into the proposal included:

• Benchmarking — conducted

research on markets, facilities and fairs across the country, including structure, budget, size, parking availability and more.

• Facility Assessment — assessed each building, thoroughly reviewing the current structures, utilities, and infrastructure, to identify any necessary renovations, and analyzed each building’s suitability for current and future events.

• Site Utilization — reviewed existing and prospective event needs, along with the current frequency that many buildings are in use for set-up, teardown or event days.

• Stakeholder Research — interviewed and surveyed more than 90 stakeholders from approximately 40 different organizations, including event holders, agency partners, agricultural commodity groups, youth organizations, Expo 2050 Task Force members, legislative and community partners, Ohio Expositions Commission members and staff, vendors, sponsors, staff, The Ohio State University, Haslam Sports Group and Columbus Crew SC, the Ohio History Connection, the city of Columbus and safety and security partners.

The 2023 Ohio State Fair will run July 26 to Aug. 6.

Gov. DeWine Announces $25M for Dam Removal Project

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) Director Laurie Stevenson announced Dec. 2 that the state will contribute $25 million to support the highly anticipated Cuyahoga River Gorge Dam Removal Project.

as an Area of Concern (AOC). Improved water quality and the restoration of the river to its natural state also create better habitat for fish and other aquatic life.

This project will remove an estimated 900,000 cu. yds. of contaminated sediment; restore fish and wildlife habitat; and restore more than a mile of the river for community recreational use.

The state funding for the project will be awarded from settlement money that Ohio received as part of the state’s polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) enforcement case against Monsanto, which was filed by then-Attorney General DeWine in 2018. The lawsuit, which was settled for $80 million in 2022, held Monsanto legally accountable for harm caused by their concealment, failure to warn, marketing, manufacturing, sale and distribution of toxic PCBs.

Ohio’s PCB Advisory Board was formed to consider proposals for the use of the settlement funds. The board recommended to Ohio EPA that $25 million in settlement funding be used for the Gorge Dam Removal Project.

The Gorge Dam was originally constructed in 1913 to provide hydroelectric power, but hydroelectric generation ended at the dam by 1958. In the spring of 2009, the power generating station on the dam was razed. The 58 ft. tall and 425 ft. wide dam, which has no necessary use today, prevents the river from flowing freely, causes sediment buildup and negatively impacts water quality.

The water quality benefits estimated from the dam project include the removal of PCBcontaminated sediment and other contaminants; the reduction of nutrients including phosphorus; and the improvement of aquatic life within the river. The project also will aid in the future delisting of the Cuyahoga River

Ohio EPA and the Ohio Lake Erie Commission have partnered with the U.S. EPA, the cities of Akron and Cuyahoga Falls, Summit Metro Parks, Summit County and others on the project. With this funding, progress toward the implementation of the Gorge Dam project will continue in 2023.

The PCB Advisory Board is accepting proposals for other projects. The board will accept proposals from state agencies in Ohio through Jan. 31, 2023. Other eligible applicants may submit project proposals through June 30, 2023. Depending on available funding, the Board may extend a second round of project proposals. Project proposals can be sent to OhioPCBBoard@epa.ohio.gov. 

Bechtel to Build Intel’s Ohio Manufacturing Facilities

Bechtel on Nov. 28 announced it was selected by Intel to build the company’s new semiconductor manufacturing facilities in New Albany, Licking County, Ohio.

“Intel has chosen Bechtel to deliver our largest construction project to date, advancing our mission to create a more sustainable, resilient and geographically balanced supply of silicon,” said Jackie Sturm corporate vice president, global supply chain operations at Intel Corporation. “Bechtel has decades of world class expertise in complex global construction projects, leveraging a deeply experienced team, critical craft support and robust analytics platforms. Its relentless

focus on safety, quality and innovation aligns with Intel key values. We look forward to building the future of U.S. semiconductor manufacturing together.”

Bechtel will design and build Phase 1 of the Intel Ohio project, a total of 2.5 million sq. ft. of facility, including 600,000 sq. ft. of cleanrooms. Construction will require as much steel as eight Eiffel Towers and as much concrete as the tallest skyscrapers. Bechtel’s ability to design for rapid advances in technology and deploy best-in-class con-

struction innovation will help Intel realize its ambitions in the next generation of manufacturing.

The new facilities will produce Intel’s leading-edge chips, boosting production to meet increasing demand for advanced semiconductors. The recently passed CHIPS and Science Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act demonstrate the strength of public-private partnerships, as they provide federal resources to support skills training to help build the workforce of

the future.

Bechtel’s work for Intel in Licking County will build on the company’s long history of delivering projects with purpose in Ohio. Most recently, Bechtel completed a low-carbon energy facility in Carroll County, where it supported a new construction trade curriculum with Southern Local Schools and worked with the community to enhance resilience of the local population during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Young Becomes First Volvo Certified EV Dealership in Ohio

Volvo Trucks North America has expanded its network of Volvo Trucks Certified Electric Vehicle (EV) Dealers into Ohio, announcing that Young Trucks, a fourth generation, family-owned dealership, has recently completed the required training and certification program.

The designation signifies that the dealership is ready to support customers around its Canton, Ohio, location who are interested in adding Volvo VNR Electric trucks to their local and regional distribution, pickup and delivery, and food and beverage distribution routes.

“Adding our tenth state to the Volvo Trucks Certified EV Dealer network is the perfect way to close out a year that has

seen significant expansion of the electromobility ecosystem that is necessary to support battery-electric trucks,” said Peter Voorhoeve, president, Volvo Trucks North America.

“Our dealerships play a critical role for fleets in every stage of the transition to battery-electric trucks — from selecting the right vehicle configuration to securing incentive funding when available, and then ensuring customers can maximize their uptime once the trucks are deployed.”

Two of Young Trucks’ technicians have completed Volvo Trucks’ hands-on training course that demonstrates how to safely maintain and repair electric drivetrains and components. Additionally, the dealership has invested in the neces-

sary diagnostic tools for its maintenance bays, and its service team has been outfitted with the personal protective equipment necessary to work with high-voltage systems.

Young Trucks has dedicated one service bay for batteryelectric trucks with plans to expand as adoption of the Volvo VNR Electric truck increases in the region.

Young Trucks opted to utilize a portable 50 kW Heliox charger to support charging its customers’ Volvo VNR Electric trucks. The portable charger provides the flexibility to move it to other bays, as needed. In addition, the charger has lower power requirements, enabling the dealership to use its existing electrical service and fast-track its infrastructure deployment timeline.

To ensure peak vehicle uptime, performance and productivity, the Volvo Gold Contract — Volvo Trucks’ premier service offering for the VNR Electric — includes 24/7 monitoring with remote diagnostics and software downloading, scheduled and preventative maintenance, towing, and vehicle repair, including the vehicle’s lithium-ion batteries and the complete electromobility system.

Each of the Volvo Trucks Certified EV Dealers maintains a stock of key parts and components for the VNR Electric model to minimize service times and quickly get customers back on the road.

“We have continued to focus on the road ahead and introducing battery-electric truck sales and service into our product and service offering was a natural next step for Young Trucks. We already service commercial trucks powered by various fuel types and technologies and adding battery-electric trucks to the mix allows us to further provide our customers with an array of solutions to suit their unique operating needs,” said Ryan Young, dealer principal, Young Trucks.

“Our leasing and rental company, Young Leasing, ordered its first Volvo VNR Electric truck to utilize as a rental unit for area fleet customers. This truck will also serve as a demo vehicle for local fleets, enabling them to experience firsthand the power and performance of the Volvo VNR Electric in their real-world routes.”

Volvo Trucks now has certified EV dealers in California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia, as well as in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, Canada, with numerous dealerships across North America finalizing their certifications in 2023.
