Crews from Concrete Applied Technologies Corporation (Catco) began work on the replacement of the Elmwood Avenue Bridge over N.Y. Route 198 and Scajaquada Creek (Buffalo, Erie County) in late spring 2015, and the plan is to complete the $10.375 million project by December 2016. The New York State Department of Transportation project, which has received federal funding, will construct a new “cost-effective bridge that accommodates all modes of transportation including cars, trucks, buses, bicyclists and pedestrians, in a manner consistent with NYSDOT standards,” stated a NYSDOT fact sheet for the project, and “proposes to

reconstruct Elmwood Avenue from Iroquois Drive to Nottingham Terrace; provide minor improvements to the intersection on Elmwood Avenue at Nottingham Terrace; reconstruct the portion of the Jesse Kregal Pathway directly below the bridge; and install new lighting and drainage systems, traffic signs, and pavement striping within the project limits. The project would be compatible with improvements proposed under NYSDOT’s N.Y. Route 198.” see BRIDGE page 48 Concrete Applied Technologies Corporation (Catco) photo

An additional goal is to incorporate, as much as possible via the funding, “aesthetic enhancements suited to the structure’s cultural and historical context.”

Construction spending in September reached a new seven-year high and climbed at the fastest rate since early 2006, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America. However, total spending on nonresidential construction declined by 0.1 percent between August and September as growing workforce shortages likely impacted the amount firms were

able to perform for the month. “Overall demand for construction continues to grow at a very robust rate,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “It appears, however, that many firms performing private nonresidential work could not find enough qualified workers in September to keep pace with growing demand.”

Construction spending in September totaled $1.094 trillion at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, 0.6 percent higher than the August total and 14.1 percent higher than in September 2014, Simonson said. He noted that the total was the highest since March 2008 and the year-over-year growth rate was the strongest see AGC page 119

Friends Work on Historic Lime Rock Park Shawn’s Lawns Operator Ron Sudol Jr. uses a Komatsu D51EXi-22 dozer at the historic Lime Rock Park racetrack in Salisbury, Conn.

For many motorsports fans in the Northeast, Lime Rock Park in Salisbury, Conn., is the pinnacle of race tracks and a destination not to be missed. Why? One reason is the track’s unique set up. The 1.5-mi. (2.41 km), up-and-down track accommodates any type of racing, including NASCAR and IndyCar. The track also has a history of attracting many of the top names in the sport. But perhaps the most significant draw is the setting itself. The track is located in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains,

about two hours north of New York City and two-and-a-half hours west of Boston. Another unique aspect of the park is that spectators at Lime Rock don’t sit in a grandstand — they view the action from a hillside. It’s a beautiful, historic and family-friendly environment that few other tracks in the country can match. Opened in 1957, the track is undergoing major renovations to help enhance the spectator’s experience and track safety. see PARK page 44
