Ritchie, IronPlanet CEOs Discuss Recent Acquisition Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers Incorporated and IronPlanet have jointly announced that they have entered into an agreement under which Ritchie Bros. will acquire IronPlanet for approximately $758.5 million, subject to customary closing adjustments. The deal is expected to be finalized in the first half of 2017. Following the announcement, Ravi Saligram, CEO of Ritchie Bros., and Gregory J. Owens, chairman and CEO of IronPlanet, spoke to Construction Equipment Guide (CEG) about what the future holds. A Change in IronPlanet’s Plans Despite early indications that IronPlanet was to eventually go public, the company decided that the Ritchie Bros. plan was more desirable and a better investment for IronPlanet investors. “After strong consideration of an IPO and combining with Ritchie Bros., our board unanimously agreed that the best outcome for IronPlanet’s employees and shareholders was to combine with Ritchie Bros,” Owens said. “This combination recognizes the value of IronPlanet’s proven technology platform, our unique IronClad Assurance IronClad Assurance and the enticing opportunity to combine the IronPlanet and Ritchie Bros. platforms to enable the companies to offer unprecedented choices to customers.” According to Saligram, the new business is being treated as a merger, rather than an acquisition, and see ACQUISITION page 134

The Wacker Neuson 6503 wheeled excavator cleans up a milled area of the tunnel floor. Due to its unique size and maneuverability, the cab is able to spin 360 degrees — without making contact with the tunnel wall — and head back down the tunnel in the opposite direction.

One of U.S.’s Largest Public Works Projects Continues The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York is working on one of the largest public works projects currently under way in the United States. The project’s purpose is to bring the Long Island Rail Road into a new terminal and concourse on the East Side, which is being constructed below and connected to Grand Central Terminal. Named the East Side Access Project, it will route the Long Island Rail Road from

its main line through New York connections in Sunnyside Yard and through the lower level of the existing 63rd Street Tunnel under the East River. In Manhattan a new tunnel was mined beginning at the western end of the 63rd Street Tunnel at Second Avenue curving south under Park Avenue and entering a new eight-track Long Island Rail Road terminal beneath Grand Central. see ACCESS page 112

Transportation Projects Popular With Voters A new analysis of eight states that passed legislation to increase their state motor fuel taxes in 2015 to pay for important new transportation improvements shows that 98 percent of Republican and Democratic lawmakers who supported the bill won their primary races in 2016.

“These results should dispel any notion that voting to increase the state gas tax is politically toxic,” said American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Chief Economist Dr. Alison Premo Black, who conducted the research. “Voters expect lawmakers to put forward solutions to help reduce traffic

congestion, improve road safety and help grow the economy. They are also willing to pay for these expanded investments.” According to the ARTBA Transportation Investment Advocacy Center (TIAC) analysis, eight states — Iowa, South Dakota, Utah, Idaho, see ARTBA page 114
