At a time when growing concern is being expressed about the lack of industry apprentices, Rochester, N.Y., is leading the way with the foundation of a new school to prepare young people for careers in construction. In 2007 Robert Brown, a Unions and Businesses United in Construction (UNICON) board member and business manager of the city’s Laborers Local 435, suggested a method to increase real-life experiences within the classroom. The UNICON board, including Executive Director Ken Warner, consulted with School see SCHOOL page 14

Construction work is ongoing where U.S. Route 206 crosses the CSX Railroad in Montgomery Township, N..J, now that a New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) project is under way. The $12 million job is funded by the state and has an anticipated completion date of December 2011. Ritacco Construction Inc., based in
Belleville, N.J., is general contractor for the project. Co. Gets 65 Extra Days to Finish N.Y.-Vt. Bridge CROWN POINT, N.Y. (AP) New York state transportation officials have granted the company building the new Lake Champlain Bridge another 65 days to complete the project, if needed. Department of Transportation spokeswoman Carol Breen said March 3 there were delays while Boulder, Colo.-based
Flatiron Construction was drilling footings for bridge piers to support the span that will connect Crown Point and Addison, Vt. She said plans still call for opening the bridge to traffic by Oct. 9. Breen said crews struck an unidentified obstruction during the drilling. She said it
could have been a piece of the old bridge demolished last December, an old shipwreck or a large rock. Breen said this winter’s severe weather also caused delays. Breen said the delays could increase the $70 million cost of the project. The time adjustment was first reported by Vermont Public Radio.
