The World Trade Center Site in New York City’s Lower Manhattan has been a place of much construction and sadly, destruction, over the past four decades. When construction started on the first towers in the late 1960s, businesses and area residents were not all pleased, especially since there was both displacement involved and a change in the character of the area due to what some feared as a modern monstrosity in their midst. Architectural critics wondered and worried about the loss of human scale due to the tremendous heights involved with the appearance of these twin, rather boxy structures. For several years one of the towers was the highest building in the world until Chicago’s Sears Tower reached completion. In the wake of the devastating loss of life and destruction of the towers on 9/11, debate, dispute, controversy and high emotions have slowed the progress of development of what instantaneously came to be see WTC page 34

We now handle truck sales, leasing, rental and warranty service for International trucks as well as maintenance and repairs for all other trucks and truck engines, regardless of make.” “The importance of the American trucking industry cannot be overstated,” Bromley noted.

Construction job gains were more widespread across the country and job losses were generally less severe in July than in June, the Associated General Contractors of America reported in an analysis of state employment data released by the Labor Department. Twenty-six states added construction jobs in

July, compared to 19 in June, while six states added construction jobs over the past year and most others are losing far fewer jobs than previously, association officials noted. “Encouraging as it is to see some modest signs of progress, it is increasingly unlikely see JOBS page 40
