A unique and highly versatile type of equipment popular in Europe has made its way to New England — and in time, with the help of a New England equipment dealer, it will be available throughout the United States. The Mecalac all-terrain HIGH SPEED skid excavator, which has changed how contractors move material and excavate in Europe, will now be exclusively available from Lorusso Heavy Equipment, located in Walpole, Mass. “We are thrilled to announce that we were able to negotiate a deal with Mecalac to not only be a dealer for their product, but also to be able to take this one step further and help set up their distribution in the United States,” said AJ Lorusso, president of Lorusso Heavy Equipment. The Mecalac MCR series combines the features of a skid steer loader, a compact excavator, a telehandler and integrates them with a unique, versatile boom. “We’d been following the development of these machines for a number of years,” said Lorusso. “In 2013, at a visit to bauma in Germany, I was finally able to see these machines in action.”

With the fork attachment the Mecalac can easily place jersey barriers around the job site.

The Mecalac all-terrain skid excavator can mount a skid steer bucket, perform all of the functions of a skid steer/track loader and lift and load materials to a pile or truck as high as 16 ft. (5 m), due to Mecalac’s versatile boom with integrated high reach offset. The boom folds to 131 degrees, offering maximum stability and lifting performance. MaineDOT Receives $10.5M TIGER Grant for Beals Island Bridge Project Sen. Susan Collins announced the Maine Department of Transportation has been awarded a $10.525 million federal TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) grant to help fund the replacement of the Beals Island Bridge in Jonesport. “I am delighted to announce that the state of Maine will receive a $10,525,000 investment to help replace the structurally deficient Beals Island Bridge in Jonesport through the TIGER grant program,” said Collins. “This important funding will allow the Maine Department of Transportation to move forward in replacing the bridge,

improving public safety, increasing connectivity between the island and the mainland, and helping to create jobs in rural Maine.” This $19.4 million bridge replacement project will be able to start construction in February of 2017. The construction schedule will span two seasons, with possible final landscaping in the spring of 2019. “The replacement of the Beals Island Bridge is an important step as we continue to maintain a solid, wellbuilt infrastructure throughout our state,” said David see BEAlS page 4

Showing Off New Line On July 16 in Walpole, Lorusso Heavy Equipment hosted a demo day, open to the public, to debut the Mecalac MCR series. The demonstrations proved successful — the dealership already has sold its entire first shipment of 6MCR and 8MCR machines and are currently taking orders for a second shipment, due to arrive in late August. Bob DiPoli, owner of R.A. DiPoli Co., with locations in Medfield, Mass., and Moultonborough, N.H., does small excavation projects. The existing Beals Island Bridge was built in 1958. The new bridge will be built parallel to the existing bridge on the east side. Two-way traffic will be maintained during construction and the navigational channel will be maintained. Massachusetts-based advertising agency Inside Out Communications Inc. will be offering a scholarship to a high school graduate from Millinocket, Maine, who enrolls in the recently launched 12-week mechanized logging course. Agency president Alicia Frick Laguarda explained, “Because of our client, Caterpillar dealer Milton CAT, we’ve had the opportunity to watch forestry crews at work. Chances are that what happened to us would happen to you, too. From then on, every time you pick a piece of paper you’ll remember what’s behind it — and you’d want to say, ‘thank you’.” The concept for the region’s first post-secondary training program for mechanized logging started when the Professional Logging Contractors (PLC) approached Maine Speaker of the House Mark W. Eves and asked for his support passing legislation that would help finance the project. A bi-partisan group that understood the importance

of the project for the Maine economy got the legislation through. Dana Doran, PLC’s executive director said, “There is a desperate need for trained equipment operators for mechanized forest harvesting,” adding that contractors in Maine are anxious to hire operators who can harvest and process timber efficiently and safely. Frick Laguarda said that the Inside Out scholarship is offered by her agency in memory of Mrs. Gerald Pelletier, matriarch of the well-known logging family. She reported that this year’s scholarship winner is Elijah Hakes. “Elijah’s application, as well as his teacher’s and guidance counselor’s recommendations, reflect the unadorned grit and willpower that quietly fuel Maine,” she said. Ritchie Bros. Hosts Successful July Sale in Manchester, N.H.

The sale featured a great quantity of excavators and other earthmoving machines.

itchie Bros. hosted its biggest sale to date at its Manchester, N.H., site on July 26, with sales totaling more than $6.6 million.

The sale featured an extensive fleet of Terex mobile cranes.

More than 1,200 bidders (449 onsite and 828 online) participated, buying 1,394 lots of equipment. Online bidders purchased 41 percent of the lots available for sale. Some of the featured equipment at the sale included: • A 2009 Sterling LT 7500 triaxle drive with a National 40-ton (36 t) boom truck sold for $162,500. • A 2007 Cat 930G loader sold for $55,000. • A 1999 Cat D6R sold for $45,000.
