June 18 that the price comparison didn’t take into account the design-build system used for the Checkered House Bridge.

“One cannot discount the engineering significance of what is being accomplished this week in Richmond,” Searles said. “It is a truly innovative undertaking that will preserve what is believed to be a valuable historic resource.”

Once the decision to preserve the bridge was made, it became an engineering challenge.

“This is not something you see in a textbook every day,” Jerry Pfunter, of the Tallahassee, Fla.,-based Finley Engineering Group, which was contracted for the actual widening of the bridge. “Typically, we start with a clean slate; we’ve got new members; we can build the traditional connections. Here we have a situation where we are partially taking apart connections.”

After the two sides were separated, workers used tape measures to note the progress.

At several points on the bridge, the workers reported by radio the progress of the separation in inches and fractions of inches. On one end of the bridge, an old-fashioned 4-ft. level was clamped onto the side of the bridge to provide an instant readout of whether the bridge truss was perfectly vertical.

Later, the truss had gotten stuck a second time, although the truss was completely separated, and it appeared doubtful that crews would be able to make the push in one day.

RICHMOND, Vt. (AP) After more than a year of planning using computers, laser levels and measuring devices accurate to a fraction of a millimeter, it took engineers with tape measures and construction workers with sledgehammers to finally bring the 83-year-old Checkered House Bridge into the 21st century.

On June 18, workers cut the historic 350-ft. (106 m) U.S. Route 2 bridge in two lengthwise by unbolting the braces holding the trusses together and began the process of pushing the sides apart to widen the span by 12-1/2 ft. (3.8 m).

As far as anyone involved in the project has been able to determine, it’s the first time such a technique has been tried on such a large bridge. Officials say the wider bridge is needed to accommodate modern traffic that frequently includes bicyclists, pedestrians and farm equipment. The span is scheduled to reopen a year from now.

Despite the preparations, the hardest push was the first.

After workers moved one 300,000-lb. (136,078 kg) truss about 2 in. (5 cm) downstream on the Winooski River, crews spent hours trying to free a single spot at the base of the bridge where, despite the specialized rollers it was laid on and pressure from hydraulic jacks, it remained stuck.

“I’m really not surprised. It’s such a large structure and such an old structure that there have to be points, friction points, that it hangs up on,” said Dale Gozalkowski, of the Albany, N.Y.-based engineer firm Clough Harbour & Associates, who helped design the project and watched June

18 as it was put into action.

The original 350-ft. Pennsylvania truss bridge was built in 1929, two years after an epic flood washed out a covered bridge in the same spot. The bridges are marked by the crisscrossing I-beams that form a latticework, creating a steel canopy above the road surface.

Vermont Transportation Agency officials have known for decades that the aging bridge about 10 mi. east of Burlington needed to be upgraded or replaced. The travel surface was 20 ft. (6.1 m) wide, barely wide enough for two vehicles to pass each other, and the aging steel and the road surface was deteriorating.

For years, Vermont officials debated the best course of action. They considered tearing it down and building a new one, leaving it alone or turning it into a one-lane bridge and building another alongside it. But the bridge is the last of its kind in Vermont on a major roadway and, as such, is historically significant, said Scott Newman, the historic preservation officer of the Vermont Agency of Transportation.

The total project cost for the bridge and the approaches on both sides is about $16 million. A new open bridge could have been built for about $7 million. But the federal law required that the historic bridge be preserved, if possible, Newman said.

“Folks are always looking at the bottom line and I don’t blame them. We are very conscious of the bottom line,” Newman said. “These are truly unique circumstances where you have a big structure that is highly significant where we need to be in compliance with federal regulations.”

Pavement Recyclers/Bagela USA Earns Green Award Pavement Recyclers/Bagela USA received the 2012 Connecticut Green Business Awards’ Green Business of the Year award.

“Basically what our equipment does is take a 100-percent recyclable resource and recycles 100 percent of it into quality reusable asphalt,” said Greg Harla, director of sales and marketing.

The recycling process, said Harla, has minimal petroleum burn-off. That’s achieved through a heating process that produces only environmentally friendly steam during the course of conversion.

Harla established the company along with Technical Director Alan Thompson and Managing Partner Dave Brennan. When Harla took a closer look at the industry, he became convinced that Bagela Asphalt Recyclers was the right product line for the company.

The 100 percent re-use is what

impressed him most.

“Asphalt is one of the few commodities with which you’re able to do that,” he said. “With tires and glass there’s always some sort of by-product. Asphalt is 100 percent recyclable.”

Pavement Recyclers customers are about 50-50 between private contractors and municipalities. The state of Connecticut is among its clients. So are other states, including Kansas and Texas.

Even though there’s a growing emphasis on green manufacturing and production throughout the country, this method of asphalt recycling remains fairly novel, said Harla.

“My job is to promote the concept along with the equipment. It’s more about educating the markets that this technology is available. And not only is it available, we sell it.”

farm, from leaves and woodchips, to vegetable clippings, to local fish byproduct and seaweed, to zoo manure, to restaurant and food scraps. The diversity of the materials that go into our compost is what makes it so nutrient rich and sought after,” stated Merner.

Not all compost is created equal. Many larger, production oriented compost facilities use just leaves and brush which may be tainted by herbicide residues or sewer sludge, which often contains heavy metals to create compost. These materials have very little nutrient value and are generally low cost.

High-quality compost is made from a broad variety of nutrient rich, chemical free materials and is typically twice the price of landfill compost, but you get what you pay for according to Merner.

“The higher the nutrient value in the compost, the higher the per cubic yard price and the greater the yield in terms of growth for crops, flowers, etc. The most unique attribute about the compost produced on our farm is the addition of the marine byproducts from the many fish processing plants in southern New England. The fish byproduct adds a level of fertility to the compost incomparable to any I’ve seen during my 33 years in the business. The soil web and nutrient analysis testing we do support this.”

In addition to moving materials into the maturing compost piles, the Hyundai loader is used to move and load mature compost from the piles into the screener, where any particles larger than 3/4” are removed. Once screened, the mature compost is ready for loading into the trucks of landscapers, garden centers, farmers, gardeners and homeowners as they arrive at the farm.

“We work this loader for a minimum of 40 hours each week. When you depend that heavily on one machine, it needs to be reliable, it needs to be comfortable and it needs to be supported, because when you work a machine that hard, eventually it’s going to need some maintenance. The Hyundai HL760 met all these criteria.”

Kahn Tractor of North Franklin, Conn., was the dealer who introduced Earth Care Farm to the HL-760 loader. Having owned other loaders, the staff knew what they were looking for and trusted the dealer and its sales representative to stand behind the product.

“The cab on the HL760 is extremely comfortable year round,” said Barth. “Its climate control in terms of air conditioning and heat allow us to work productively on the coldest and hottest days of the year. The cabin air fresh filter is also a nice feature, particularly

since the smell of some of the materials delivered before its incorporated into the compost piles can be pretty offensive.

Another nice feature of the cab is its wide, tinted and laminated windshield, which has no framing cutting through it, allowing me to see in all directions to easily assess both the terrain and the work to be done.”

Maintenance on the Hyundai HL760 also was well thought out. The loader has easyto-access service points for routine maintenance and oil changes, as well as an easy-toaccess pilot filter, grease fittings, central electric controllers and fuse box and remote drain port. To date, routine maintenance is the only time that the Hyundai HL-760 hasn’t been working on the farm.

When asked why their business continues to grow, Barth said, “Most of our new business comes from word of mouth. When someone’s neighbor sees a garden with plants that are thriving, full of tomatoes or rhubarb that are twice the size as theirs early in the season, they ask questions. The answers to those questions typically result in new customers for our farm. Word of mouth is our only form of marketing.”

Base materials delivered and incorporated into the piles are turned in an aerobicallymanaged compost system. Each batch of compost takes approximately one year from start to finish. The mature, finished black compost bares little resemblance to the ingredients it was made from, with the exception of little pieces of shellfish, which give Earth Care Farm’s compost a regional uniqueness not found in compost produced inland.

Earth Care Farm was founded by Michael Merner in 1972, with the compost operation starting shortly thereafter. Merner has made his living by allowing local businesses and towns to dump natural waste byproducts from around the state on his farm for incorporation into the chemical free compost that is manufactured.
