Monroe Tractor Builds On Long Legacy; Expands Presence in New England For many contractors in Massachusetts and Connecticut, Monroe Tractor may still be a relatively new name. But the company behind that name is anything but new.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2026, Monroe Tractor has spent three-quarters of a century selling, renting and supporting construction and agricultural equipment. From its beginnings as a small Case dealership in Henrietta, N.Y., the family-owned company has expanded throughout the Northeast, with more recent growth taking it into Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

That history is increasingly important as Monroe Tractor strengthens its identity throughout New England. The challenge isn’t establishing a new equipment dealership from the ground up. The Royalton, Vt., bridge project involves the rehabilitation of two bridges carrying Interstate 89 northbound and southbound over the White River, the New England Central Railroad and Vt. Route 107. The project is being contracted by Beck & Bellucci of Franklin, N.H., with assistance from Monoko.

Work on the $38.9 million project began in April 2024 and is expected to be completed by June 2028.

Alta’s Aly Rego Brings Blue-Collar Background to Customers For Alta Equipment sales representative Aly Rego, selling construction equipment is less about taking an order and more about understanding what a customer is trying to accomplish.

Rego, who has been with Alta Equipment for nearly three years, recently transitioned into a territory sales position covering much of southern New Hampshire and southern Vermont. Her territory includes Sullivan, Hillsborough, Merrimack and Cheshire counties in New Hampshire, along with portions of Vermont.

The move builds on Rego’s previous role with Alta, where she spent approximately two years handling governmental and municipal sales throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire. That position gave her experience working with municipalities, state agencies and the public bidding process before an opening in Alta’s Concord, N.H., territory provided an opportunity to move into a broader sales role.

While Rego is relatively young compared with many longtime construction equipment sales professionals, her background in machinery and the trades began well before she entered equipment sales.

Rego graduated from Bristol County Agricultural High School in Massachusetts, where she studied diesel technology and was exposed to several areas of agriculture and the trades. The school’s programs included large and small animal science, landscaping, agriculture and related fields.

“I came from a blue-collar family,” Rego told Construction Equipment Guide. “I came from a blue-collar work ethic.”

Initially, she envisioned becoming a mechanic or welder. After high school, however, she went to work for a small-engine repair business, performing basic service work on equipment. When the company added a commercial mower line, Rego had an opportunity to try her hand at sales.

She quickly discovered that she enjoyed it.

“I absolutely fell in love with it,” she said.

Looking for an opportunity to advance into the construction equipment industry, Rego moved into inside sales with a Caterpillar dealership. That experience eventually led to an outside sales position, giving her the opportunity to work directly with contractors and equipment owners in the field.

Eventually, Rego connected with JCB and Alta Equipment, beginning the next stage of her career.

One of the things that attracted her to Alta, she said, was the company’s emphasis on customer service.

“Alta Equipment is very big on customer service, which is really the heart and soul of what drives me in sales — customer relationships,” Rego said.

before joining the company by encountering its customers while traveling her previous sales territory.

“Customers that worked closely with Alta had nothing but great things to say about the company as a whole,” she said. “I think that really piqued my interest.”

Rego said she particularly appreciated what she saw as Alta’s customer-first philosophy — listening to equipment owners, responding to their needs and continually looking for ways to improve the customer’s experience.

Today, she represents an Alta product lineup that allows her to work with customers ranging from contractors and municipalities to landscapers, hardscapers, golf courses, farms and property owners.

Among the equipment available through Alta in her territory are JCB, Avant compact loaders, Vibrotech screening equipment and Toro Dingo compact utility loaders.

Rego is particularly enthusiastic about the versatility of the Avant line, which can be equipped with a wide variety of attachments.

“I call it a Swiss Army knife of a machine,” she said.

With approximately 250 attachments available, she said Avant machines can be adapted for landscaping, hardscaping, property maintenance, agricultural work and golf course applications. Their design

also makes them particularly useful when minimizing ground disturbance is important.

Rego also sees considerable growth potential for JCB’s larger construction equipment.

Although JCB has long been closely associated with its backhoe loaders and compact equipment, Rego pointed out that the manufacturer offers machines extending well into the heavy equipment market, including the JCB 370 excavator, an approximately 80,000-lb. machine.

“JCB is definitely a player in the market for heavy equipment, and we’re here to stay,” she said. “I would definitely love to see more heavy equipment in the JCB line being sold.”

The manufacturer’s wheel loader lineup also extends into larger machines, including the 457, while Rego said the 427 is among the larger loaders she commonly encounters in her sales efforts.

Another product she sees generating opportunities is JCB’s Hydradig 110W wheeled excavator. The approximately 24,000-lb. machine can be particularly well suited for municipalities and applications where contractors need an excavator capable of moving quickly from one work area to another.

Pairing a wheeled excavator with a Steelwrist tiltrotator can further increase its versatility, Rego said.

Regardless of the machine involved, Rego believes successful equipment sales begin with accessibility and service after the sale.

“If my customers aren’t happy, I am not happy,” she said. “Without them, I wouldn’t have a job.”

That philosophy means answering calls quickly, spending extensive time on the road and making herself the customer’s first point of contact when a problem arises.

“If their machine goes down, I’m first in the parking lot picking up a loaner to bring it out to you,” she said.

Rather than simply directing customers to another department when they need assistance, Rego prefers that they contact her and allow her to help coordinate the solution.

“I say, ‘Call me directly if you have an issue,’” she said.

That approach also extends to the initial equipment purchase.

Rego said customers sometimes contact her already convinced that they know which machine they need. Instead of immediately providing a price, she frequently asks more questions and, when appropriate, visits the customer’s operation.

A farmer moving hay bales inside a barn, for example, may think he needs a particular skid steer. But if the machine doesn’t fit through the barn, purchasing it isn’t going to solve his problem.

“Why don’t we have a deeper conversation?” Rego said. “Let me come down to your farm and see what your setup is like.”

Her agricultural and mechanical background helps with those conversations.

Friends and former classmates have gone on to careers in arboriculture, landscaping, excavation and farming, giving Rego firsthand familiarity with many of the industries she now serves.

That diversity fits particularly well with Alta’s equipment lineup, she said, because there is no single type of customer or application.

For Rego, that is what makes equipment sales interesting — and why she views her job as something more than selling iron.

“There’s a lot more to sales than just selling something,” she said. “There’s understanding your product, understanding your customers.”

Ultimately, she believes the salesperson’s role is to identify the customer’s problem and match that customer with the equipment best suited to solve it.

“You’re really being more of a problem solver and coming up with a solution,” Rego said. “You need to really understand your product, understand what your customers are looking to achieve and guide them in the right direction. You’re not just an order taker.”  CEG

Seventy-Five Years of Growth Monroe Tractor was founded in 1951 by Henry and Dorothy Hansen in Henrietta, N.Y., near Rochester.

Henry Hansen, who was raised on a farm in New York’s Finger Lakes region and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, started the dealership in a roughly 30-ft.-by40-ft. cinderblock building. From the beginning, the business was closely tied to J.I. Case, establishing a relationship with the Case brand that continues today.

It was a family operation in every sense.

Janet Felosky, Hansen’s daughter and Monroe Tractor’s CEO, recalled her father working long days and nights doing whatever was necessary to keep the young dealership moving.

“We all worked very hard days and nights,” Felosky said.

“It seems like my dad did everything himself.”

As demand for tractor-loader-backhoes increased, the dealership grew. Hansen also recognized the potential of equipment rental early, developing a construction equipment rental business during the 1960s.

Additional New York locations followed, and a major expansion occurred in 2008 with the acquisition of S.C. Hansen, a dealership operated by Henry Hansen’s brother, Stuart.

In 2017, Monroe Tractor entered the New England construction equipment market through the acquisition of Case dealership operations in Massachusetts. A Connecticut location followed, giving the company a broader presence in a market where the Monroe Tractor name had not previously been as widely recognized.

Building Monroe Tractor’s Massachusetts Presence Richard Longbottom, branch manager of Monroe Tractor’s Westborough, Mass., operation, sees the company’s history and resources as important components in growing the dealership’s New England presence.

“Case identified that they wanted to have a mature, established dealer come into this marketplace and revitalize the market,” Longbottom said.

Longbottom brought more than 30 years of construction equipment industry experience to Monroe Tractor. Since arriving at Westborough, one of his priorities has been rebuilding and expanding the branch’s sales organization.

“We only had two reps when I came on board,” he said.

“We’ve got five new salesmen on board that have some good backgrounds and are pretty aggressive.”

Changes also have been made within parts and service, with the overall objective of increasing Monroe Tractor’s presence in the field and developing lasting relationships with contractors.

“I truly believe and know that this business is still a relationship business,” Longbottom said.

That requires sales representatives to be in their territories rather than waiting for customers to come to them.

“It cannot just wait for the phone to ring,” he said. “We’ve got to get down there and cover the territory.”

Monroe Tractor also has increased its participation in demonstrations, trade events and open houses. Longbottom believes getting customers into the Westborough location is important because it gives them an opportunity to see the investment Monroe Tractor has made in New England. see MONROE page 10

“We have a full team of service from beginning to end,” Longbottom said. “We can service here at the shop for bigger jobs, or we can get out on site and repair machines.”

Rental is another important part of the operation. While customers may see only the equipment physically positioned in Westborough, the available fleet extends throughout Monroe Tractor’s branch network.

“We move the machines around pretty fast,” Longbottom said. “Just because it’s not physically here doesn’t mean we can’t have it here tomorrow.”

That network also allows Monroe Tractor to broaden the range of equipment it can make available to customers.

Longbottom sees opportunities for Case products that may not historically have received as much exposure in New England, including wheeled excavators and larger excavators.

Wheel loaders also remain an important product, Westborough, Mass. parts manager, Jose Sanchez particularly among municipalities.

Parts Inventory Built Around Customers Parts Manager Jose Sanchez has been another part of the changes taking place at Westborough.

Sanchez joined Monroe Tractor following approximately 17 years in the automotive industry. Although construction equipment was new to him, he found that one fundamental principle carried directly from one industry to the other: having the parts when the customers need them.

“The biggest thing is honestly just knowing what your customers need,” Sanchez said.

“Really doing a deep dive of your inventory, seeing what’s moving, seeing what’s not moving and making adjustments as you go.”

His focus has been increasing inventories of frequently used parts while reducing obsolete and slow-moving stock.

“You load up on things that you know are hot movers, especially for the shop, customers over the phone, the counter and customers out there on the road,” Sanchez said.

The larger Monroe Tractor parts network provides another advantage. If a needed part isn’t on the Westborough shelf, it may be available at another branch and transferred quickly.

For Sanchez, the objective is not simply reacting when a customer needs a part but learning enough about the customer’s fleet to anticipate future service requirements. see MONROE page 14

Family Ownership Remains Part of Business Despite its growth, Monroe Tractor remains family owned and operated, with descendants of founder Henry Hansen actively involved in the company.

Laura Wilkas, Hansen’s granddaughter, is vice president of marketing and one of the owners of Monroe Tractor. Wilkas works closely with the company’s New England operations and said accessibility to ownership remains one of the advantages of being a family business.

“Supporting any questions anybody has that they can’t get quick answers for — if I don’t know, I can get somebody who’s going to answer the phone,” Wilkas said.

Her involvement extends beyond marketing. Wilkas accompanies sales representatives on customer visits and becomes involved when a customer issue requires additional attention.

Longbottom sees that accessibility as an important distinction.

“To me, it’s a true family business,” he said. “I can at any point phone any owner, any time of the day.”

He also appreciates that members of the ownership family understand the equipment business and the challenges faced by customers and dealership employees.

“They truly do understand this industry,” Longbottom said.

That involvement can extend directly to customers.

Longbottom recalled a recent situation in which Monroe Tractor President Chris Felosky personally contacted a dissatisfied customer to help resolve an issue.

“He’s not afraid to pick up the phone and speak to the customer directly,” Longbottom said. “I think that’s pretty powerful.” see MONROE page 16

Dennehey Builds Connecticut Operation Around Product Support Monroe Tractor is taking a similar customer-focused approach at its South Windsor, Conn., location at 6 Sandra Drive.

Branch Manager Matthew Dennehey joined Monroe Tractor in 2023 as service manager and was promoted to branch manager approximately a year later.

Unlike many branch managers whose careers develop primarily through equipment sales, Dennehey’s background is rooted in service and parts. Before joining Monroe Tractor, he managed the parts department at Able Tool & Equipment.

Earlier, he worked in the automotive industry, beginning as a technician before moving into management and parts operations.

“I’ve always had a passion in the service side and supporting customers,” Dennehey said. “I’ve never shied away from a challenge, so I enjoy it and it’s rewarding.”

That background influences the way he manages South Windsor. His priorities include minimizing downtime, improving communication and making sure the branch’s parts and service departments respond quickly when customers need assistance.

“I come into the sales aspect with a different perspective of understanding what the customer needs are, what their pain points can be,” Dennehey said.

One visible example has been the expansion of field Monroe Tractor has service trucks strategically located across New York and New England to provide cusservice.

Equipment East has named Steven Lomasney service manager, placing him in charge of coordinating service operations across the dealership’s four New England locations.

Lomasney is based at Equipment East’s headquarters in Dracut, Mass., where he oversees the company’s team of approximately 11 service technicians. His responsibilities include scheduling field and shop repairs, coordinating new equipment deliveries, communicating with customers and helping ensure service work is completed accurately and efficiently.

He brings nearly two decades of technical and management experience to the position.

His background includes work in the automotive industry, municipal water and wastewater operations, material handling and heavy equipment.

That broad experience has given Lomasney an understanding of mechanical systems as well as the importance of clear communication between customers,

technicians and dealership personnel.

As service manager, Lomasney will work closely with Equipment East’s technicians to balance emergency field calls, scheduled maintenance, shop repairs and equipment preparation. He also will serve as an important point of contact for customers when machines require service or technical support.

Equipment East places a strong emphasis on product support, recognizing that dependable service is essential to keeping contractors productive and their equipment operating in the field, the company said.

Lomasney’s role will help the dealership continue strengthening that support throughout its territory.
