Lake Champlain’s navigable channel between the towns of Grand Isle and North Hero, Vt., is now off-limits to boats of all sizes until May 15, 2022, due to the construction of a new roadway drawbridge over the narrow waterway.

The North Hero Grand Isle Drawbridge is a historic twin leaf bascule bridge, according to Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), and the only vehicular movable bridge in the state. The channel it crosses is located near the north end of the lake, close to the Canadian border.

Yale’s Popular Natural History Museum Crews Set to Bring Set for Huge $160M Renovation Project Connecticut’s New Platt Technical High School to Completion

A huge $160 million project is under way at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., as the college’s worldrenowned Peabody Museum of Natural History is getting its first makeover in 90 years.

Founded in 1866, the museum helped introduce the world to dinosaurs in the 19th century and is today one of the world’s oldest and largest university museums of its kind.

Home to more than 14 million objects and specimens across 10 distinct collections, it preserves and displays more than four billion years of Earth and human history.

When it reopens its galleries in 2024, the renovated Peabody will feature a new K-12 Education Center with dedicated classrooms for local schoolchildren, a light-filled Central Gallery designed to host outreach events year-round and a new outdoor courtyard space for community gatherings.

And, of course, there will be dinosaurs.

Alongside a wealth of newly displayed fossil material, the first brontosaurus, stegosaurus and triceratops specimens ever discovered will stand beneath Rudolph Zallinger’s celebrated “The Age of Reptiles” mural in the redesigned Great Hall of Dinosaurs.

Yale’s brontosaurus, in fact, was the first ever discovered.

O.C. Marsh, the famed Yale paleontologist, and his team announced in 1879 that they had found the dinosaur bones in Wyoming. Marsh named the newly discovered species Brontosaurus excelsus.

In all, the museum’s total gallery space will expand by more than 50 percent.

The renovation is due to several significant contributions from local and national donors, including a landmark $160 million gift in 2018 from Edward P. Bass, Class of 1968.

Fundraising for the project is ongoing.

In November, the Peabody announced that it will offer free admission in perpetuity once the facility is again open to visitors.

The museum, which continues to operate many of its programs online, will join the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art as free public admission museums.

“This has been part of the plan from the beginning and donors to the Peabody made this possible,” said David Skelly, the natural history museum’s director. “I am deeply grateful to all of them for their leadership in helping us realize a vision for the museum’s future.”

The Peabody has long served as a gateway to science for the Greater New Haven community, hosting exhibitions and public programs that connect tens of thousands of visitors each year with the latest research occurring at Yale and around the world.

Dinosaurs to Be Joined By New Exhibits After first breaking ground in 2020, the pace of construction is currently moving full speed ahead, Skelly said.

“The Peabody Museum has been sitting on this corner in New Haven since 1925,” he noted. “We’re taking the whole building back to the bricks, and then we’re adding on more exhibition space.”

The additions will include many new exhibits, he added, such as separate galleries on the history of science, on Native American peoples, and Pacific cultures, Skelly said.

“We’re going to be able to share our collections way more with the community, and that is super exciting,” explained Mariana DiGiacomo, a natural history conservator at the Peabody.

Renovation Means Exhibits Require Protection With major construction under way, though, extra care needs to be taken with all the items in the museum.

“We have to be very careful with the millions and millions of objects that were sitting in this building, [and] they all had to get moved out of the way,” Skelly told Hartford’s NBCLX TV affiliate.

However, it is a different story with the colossal dinosaur bones.

“We have three fossil skeletons,” DiGiacomo explained.

“One of them is attached to the wall, and the other two are too big to move out.”

Those fossils are being sheltered in place, including the skeleton of a large Edmontosaurus, a duck-billed species.

Eleven dioramas also are being protected with temperature control and filtered air.

by Zallinger, a 20th century artist, have long been major attractions to the Peabody and cannot be moved during the reconstruction. Besides his recognizable “The Age of Reptiles,” is another entitled “The Age of Mammals.”

“We are standing right next to the T-Rex that is painted on this amazing mural,” DiGiacomo said to a reporter from NBCLX. “We are doing everything in our power and even beyond to keep it in good shape during construction.”

Preserving a piece of art that was finished back in 1947, though, requires daily walk-throughs.

“We are looking at all of the images in this mural and making sure that everything is where it’s supposed to be,” she explained. “Some things are harder than others. For example, when there is any demolition happening, there’s vibration. And so, we’re constantly monitoring those vibrations to make sure that we’re keeping it in place.”

They also are re-discovering iconic original architecture.

“It’s things like the double arches,” said Tim White, director of collections and research, at the museum. “That is a signature part of the Peabody lobby. We started to uncover these arches that had been covered up for the last 50 or 60 years.”

Renovated Peabody Something to Take Pride In On Dec. 2, staff, curators and project partners were invited to sign their name, leave a message in ancient cuneiform, and/or draw a dinosaur on the final steel beam of the Peabody addition. The crew from the project’s builder, Turner Construction, and the Ironworkers of Local 424 teamed up to secure the beam in place.

In early 2024, when people drive past the Peabody following its renovation, DiGiacomo said they will see an enormous dinosaur fossil framed in the window — one of the highlights of the museum’s transformation.

“People are going to return to see some old friends, but in a new light,” she told the Hartford station.

Added Skelly, “We hope that what we offer is going to be a fantastic experience, so people can better understand the world around them.” 

Construction on Milford, Conn.’s new Platt Technical High School is slated to be completed and ready for students next spring, according to Principal David Telesca.

The work on the new building for Platt Tech students, which began in 2020, remains in progress, Telesca said, adding that the project was initially conceived due to the condition of the current building.

“This is a new construction, built upon our fields,” he told the New Haven Register. “After the building is done, the old building will be torn down, and fields will be constructed in its place.”

He added that the demolition of the old school will occur soon after the building opens.

“It will take the 2022-23 school year to [fully] complete,” said Telesca. “The fields will include our traditional sports of football, baseball, softball, soccer and track.”

Because the current Platt Tech High School was built in 1974, the old building is not energy efficient, he added.

However, the new building will have numerous upgrades — including temperature regulation.

The new 237,000-sq.-ft. facility is being built on a 35-acre site and has a cost of $92 million. The construction project also includes a 15-bay garage to house maintenance equipment and the school’s blue buses, which transport students to job sites and its athletic teams to away games.

KBE Building Corp. of Farmington is the construction administrator. Architectural design of the new complex was done by Drummey Rosane Anderson Inc., of South Windsor.

The Register reported that site preparation for the construction effort began in April 2020, which included clearing, silt fencing and rock removal. Concrete foundations began in May, followed by underground plumbing and electrical installations. By early November, the steel framing for the two-story academic wing and cafeteria were up, and the concrete walls for the gymnasium fitness facility were in place.

Telesca told the New Haven news source that the design of the school was not to be larger; rather, it was designed for a newer school. He added that the new building will have the same number of trades as the current structure but will be an upgrade of the overall facility and technology.

“Some of the programs we will be expanding are our sustainable architecture and mechanical design and engineering trades,” he said. “Many of our trades will have upgraded equipment.”

Maine to Build Connector BetweenGorham, South Portland The Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) is set to hold public hearings on further details for its proposed four-lane tolled connector linking the Bernard P. Rines Bypass in Gorham with the Maine Mall area in South Portland.

The 6-mi.-long roadway is aimed at reducing bumper-tobumper, rush hour congestion on state and local roads in the area. It would “greatly relieve” Gorham’s intersection at Cumberland County Road 22, and South Street (Route 114), along with McLellan and Brackett roads in Gorham, which are “jammed,” said Peter Mills, executive director of the MTA. Mills, in a late November interview with the American Journal, a Portland Press Herald community news site, outlined the most recent plans for the connector, which would come with an estimated $1.50 toll.

MTA Has Plan for Project Funding The Gorham Connector is expected to cost “at least $220 million,” possibly $240 million, Mills told the Journal.

Most Agree Connector Is Needed, But Have Concerns Mills and Erin Courtney, the MTA’s outreach manager, presented the plan to officials in the communities impacted by the project.

Gorham Town Councilor Benjamin Hartwell agreed that a turnpike connector is needed but is concerned its convenience would increase development in outlying Gorham, Scarborough, South Portland and Westbrook have all endorsed building a connector, and the Maine Legislature in 2017 passed a bill authorizing the turnpike authority to construct one.

The authority would pay for construction from a combination of revenues and bonding, along with some additional funds from combined turnpike reserve accounts for interchanges and improvements that totaled $73.5 million at the end of October, Mills disclosed.

He explained that Gorham and Scarborough are the core communities in the planned corridor.

Although the exact route has not been determined, Mills explained that the proposed highway would slice through a portion of the northern nine holes of the Gorham Country Club golf course.

A bridge would carry the connector over both Brackett Road and the Stroudwater River in Gorham, while another would take it over Saco Street near the GorhamScarborough line. Current plans call for the highway to “skirt” the hayfield of Smiling Hill Farm on Route 22 in Scarborough where an interchange would be constructed, Mills said.

From there, the new roadway would run behind Gannett Drive Business Park in South Portland, pass under Running Hill Road in Scarborough, and terminate at the turnpike’s Exit 45. Driver options at the Exit 45 interchange would include heading north toward Augusta, south to Boston, and east to Interstate 295 and U.S. Highway 1.

The project would likely require the removal of three homes in Gorham, plus a few more on Running Hill Road in Scarborough, noted Mills, who added that since 2019 he has walked door-to-door to talk with impacted property owners.

“I worry that additional development to our northwest will cause more traffic through the Gorham Village to get to the turnpike spur,” Hartwell said in an email response to the American Journal.

Ronald Shepard, Hartwell’s fellow Gorham town councilor, also is unsure about the Rines Bypass and South Street intersection. The MTA proposal links the connector to the southern end of the bypass at the existing South Street roundabout, which could be replaced with a traffic signal. He is concerned that a red light there could back up traffic along South Street to Day Road.

Shepard understands, though, the MTA’s plan is “still in the drawing stages.”

The MTA’s board of directors will be updated on the proposal’s progress Dec. 16.

The board already authorized some land purchases, and Scarborough and Gorham properties have been acquired to ensure availability, the Journal reported. In addition, the MTA purchased land in Gorham across from South Street’s Park & Ride, adjacent to the roundabout.

In 2022, the MTA could apply for permits to build the connector, including those needed from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and the state’s Historic Preservation Commission.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will determine, though, whether the highway will be built.

Once permitted, construction on the connector could begin in late 2023, meaning the highway has a chance to open in 2025 or 2026. 

In a Dec. 3 update on VTrans’ drawbridge website page, the state agency noted that Cianbro recently placed concrete for the perimeter curb on the west side of the existing bridge and is currently installing rebar and formwork for the stairs. In addition, the electrical work and interior room finishes are being completed.

On the drawbridge’s east side, the contractor recently placed concrete for the suspended roof slab at the south end of the pier. The installation of reinforcing steel and formwork for the control house slab, the last slab placement at the pier, was also wrapped up the first week of December. Following that, Cianbro’s crews will pour concrete for the east side control house slab and begin work on the stairways inside the pier.

VTrans added that the construction barges currently at the site may be removed from the channel for emergency purposes with four hours of notification. If the lake is frozen, though, moving the barges to accommodate emergency passage may be impractical or impossible.

A safety zone was issued to mariners by the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern New England that will remain in effect within a 50yd. radius of the drawbridge, enforced from 7 a.m. to midnight, until the project is completed. 

Federal money has been awarded to South Burlington, Vt., for the construction of a pedestrian bridge near a busy intersection of Interstate 89 in the city.

The state’s two United States’ senators, Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders, along with Congressman Peter Welch and South Burlington officials, announced Nov. 19 that more $9.7 million had been secured through a federal grant for the project, which will create an elevated ramp next to the Williston Road overpass that acts as the main artery into downtown Burlington.

Pedestrians and cyclists currently are forced to cross multiple on- and off-ramps alongside traffic on the bridge, reported WPTV-TV in nearby Plattsburgh, N.Y. The RAISE, or Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity, grant program is a discretionary funding initiative administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT). The South Burlington project is one of 90 across the country that received the awards. In 2021, USDOT received 765 eligible RAISE applications requesting more than $10.3 billion in funding.

The Vermont congressional delegation submitted a letter of support for the city of South Burlington’s RAISE grant project last July.

Bridge Could Lessen Sprawl, Carbon Footprint In a news release, city officials said they remain hopeful the project will discourage urban sprawl and allow more residents to choose fuel-free methods of transportation that can lessen the area’s carbon footprint.

“Modern infrastructure is critical to address the impacts of climate change,” South Burlington City Manager Jessie Baker noted in the statement. “We are thankful for the financial support to do this while also building com-

munity vibrancy.”

Efforts to secure funding received backing from all three members of Vermont’s congressional delegation and follow years of public input. It follows a recommended plan released last year, which axed a proposed gondola crossing above the roadway, according to the TV station.

“This project in the heart of Chittenden County will make it safer and easier for Vermonters to travel home and to work by bike or on foot,” commented Leahy in the Nov. 19 press release. “Part of the federal strategy to limit the worst impacts of climate change must be to invest in non-vehicular transportation [and environmentally sustainable projects for Vermont’s downtowns].”

In his role as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Leahy included language in the Fiscal Year 2020 Omnibus Appropriations Bill to ensure that rural states like Vermont would receive a portion of these competitive grants.

“If we are going to combat the existential threat of climate change, strengthen our economy and improve the lives of Vermonters across the state, we can and must transform our transportation systems away from fossil fuels and toward sustainable alternatives,” noted Sanders, Leahy’s Senate colleague.

Sanders added that the pedestrian bridge project “is an important step in the right direction” to give Vermonters “a safe, affordable and sustainable way...to travel between Burlington and South Burlington.”

According to South Burlington’s Baker, the bridge structure is “envisioned to be a destination, not just a pathway,” in that it will “connect our burgeoning City Center with our neighboring community and key destinations such as the [University of Vermont and the UV Medical Center].” 
